WTO : Global Trade might have been approaching a turning point, with stronger growth expected the near future
GENEVA: The latest outlook scales back the earlier optimism in the barometer from February, which suggested that trade might have been approaching a turning point, with stronger growth expected the near future. The anticipated upturn may have been short-circuited by the conflict in Ukraine, which started in late February and triggered sharp rises in food and energy prices, which tend to reduce real incomes and lower economic growth. China's imposition of major lockdowns to combat a new outbreak of COVID19 has further disrupted trade and production. The barometer index might have risen above trend if some of the underlying data in the component indices had not turned down in March and April. Component indices are smoothed t o m inim iz e t he inf lu e nc e o f extreme values, but this may
obscure sudden changes in the latest months. Most of the barometer's component indices are close to or above their baseline value of 100, for example export orders (101.2), automotive products (101.5), air freight (99.9), electronic components (103.8), and raw materials (99.5). Only container shipping remains firmly below trend (95.0). Non-smoothed data for export orders and air freight went from above trend in one period to below trend in the next, hinting at a sharper downturn. If the Ukraine crisis and Chinese lockdowns persist, their impact may be seen more clearly in the next release. In April, the WTO forecasted 3.0% growth in the volume of world
merchandise trade in 2022, down from the 4.7% growth predicted as of l a s t O c t o b e r. T h e c u r r e n t barometer reading is broadly consistent with the April projection, but forecasts are less certain at the moment and should be interpreted with care. The Goods Trade Barometer is a composite leading indicator providing real-time information on the trajectory of merchandise trade relative to recent trends ahead of conventional trade volume statistics. Readings of 100 indicate growth in line with medium-term trends; values greater than 100 suggest above-trend growth while values below 100 indicate the reverse.

Quad leaders roll out major initiative to improve monitoring Maritime activities across Indo-Pacific TOKYO: Four-nation grouping Quad recently launched a major new initiative for the Indo-Pacific that allows the partner countries to fully monitor the waters on their shores and help ensure peace and stability in the region, a move that comes amid China’s increasingly intimidatory behaviour. The announcement on the rollout of the IndoPacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) came at the end of the second in-person Quad summit attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese. A joint statement by the four leaders said the IPMDA will support and work in consultation with IndoPacific nations and regional information fusion centres in the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands by providing technology and training to support shared maritime domain awareness to promote stability and prosperity. According to a White House fact sheet, the IPMDA will offer a “near-real-time, integrated, and costeffective” maritime domain awareness picture and it will transform the ability of partners in the Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean region to fully monitor the waters on their shores, and, in turn, “uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific.
It said the new initiative will allow tracking of ‘dark shipping’ and other tactical-level activities, such as rendezvous at sea. “Quad countries are committed to contributing to the region’s maritime domain awareness-a fundamental requirement for peace, stability, and prosperity- through investment in IPMDA over five years. The partnership will innovate upon existing maritime domain awareness efforts, rapidly bringing emerging technologies to bear for the greater good of the IndoPacific community,” the White House said.
Engineering exports to China & CIS fell in April; Shipments to North America registered highest growth : EEPC India K O L K ATA : I n d i a ’ s engineering goods exports to China and CIS countries fell in April 2022 while shipments to North America surged by registering the highest growth, even as India reported nearly 22% growth in overall engineering exports at $9.73 billion, announced the Engineering Export Promotion Council of India. Engineering goods exports to the CIS region including Russia and Ukraine, among others fell maximum year-onyear to $25.1 million in April 2022 from $90 million a year ago. Export of engineering goods to China fell 47.5% to $216.8 million in April 2022 compared to $413.2 million in the same month a year ago. Export of engineering goods to North America surged 52.9% to $2.26 billion in April 2022 compared to $1.48 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year. Engineering exports to the European Union surged to $2 billion, up from $1.42 billion in April last year. The United States of America (USA) recorded a 59% jump in imports of engineering goods from India in April 2022 with the value of total shipments aggregating to $1.87 billion as against $1.17 billion in the same month a year ago. In April 2022, India’s overall engineering exports recorded 21.97% growth over the same month a year ago by reporting $9.73 billion of shipment, up from $7.97 billion in April 2021. India has set a target of $127 billion of engineering exports for 2022-23, translating into $10.58 billion a month on a pro-rata basis. As against this, actual exports during April 2022 stood at $9.73 billion. “Following the remarkable performance in FY 2021-22, India’s merchandise, as well as engineering exports, recorded impressive numbers in the first month of the new FY 2022-23,” said EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai. India’s merchandise exports during April 2022 grew by 30.7% to reach $40.19 billion.
Despite impressive achievement in overall merchandise exports and engineering exports during April 2022, Desai pointed out some concerns. “Post Covid19 pandemic global economic recovery has been mired by several issues such as the Ukraine-Russia conflict, resurgence of Covid and complete shutdown of key commercial Chinese cities like Shanghai and steeply rising oil and commodity prices.” In April this year, 20 out of 25 key nations importing engineering goods from India recorded positive growth. The countries that recorded high double-digit growth include the US, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Spain, and Canada. The top 25 countries contribute almost 75% of total engineering exports. As many as 31 out of 34 engineering product panels witnessed positive growth in exports during April 2022. Negative year-on-year growth during the month under review was seen in copper and its products, project goods, and ships, boats, and floating structures. Among the various engineering item groups recording positive growth, exports of iron and steel and its products surged 31% year-on-year in April 2022 at $2.64 billion, up from $2.02 billion a year ago. Exports of non-ferrous metals and products saw a surge of 50% at $1.4 billion in April 2022, up from $933 million in April 2021. Exports of industrial machinery grew 18.7% year-on-year in April 2022 to $1.5 billion. Further, the trend in exports of auto and auto parts remained positive with total shipments valued at $1.77 billion in April 2022 as compared to $1.48 billion in the same month of the previous year. EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai viewed that India’s new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with various countries could further boost engineering goods exports from the country.

PM Gati Shakti will improve Infra planning & lower logistics cost : Piyush Goyal Shri Goyal expressed confidence that India could achieve a target of USD 1 Trillion worth of merchandise and services export each by 2030 DAVO S : U n i o n M i n i s t e r f o r Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal has asked Indian industry to procure locally wherever there is an opportunity so that domestic supply chains are fortified and become more resilient and the tendency to place excessive dependence on international supply chains is curbed. He was addressing the “Breakfast session Discussion on Trade 4.0” in Davos, Switzerland recently. Observing that the India story had been receiving a lot of enthusiasm across the world, the Minister said that in spite of constraints like Covid 19, chip shortages, conflict, rising commodity prices, container shortages and significant shipping and logistics issues that it has been facing in the last two years, which caused massive supply chain disruptions that threw the global economy off balance, Indian businesses had displayed great resilience, overshooting export targets and achieving USD 421.8 billion worth of exports. Quoting the P rime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, Shri Goyal said that India amongst all these problems is an oasis which reflects tra n s pa r e n c y, o f f e r s tr ust and timeliness and added that the nation had responded to every crisis in a timely manner. This responsiveness, he said, is a manifestation of the resilience that Indian businesses have to offer and the resilience and
confidence of political leadership. Speaking of the need for working together towards a shared vision, Shri Goyal expressed confidence that India could achieve a target of USD 1 Trillion worth of merchandise and services export each by 2030 if we worked as a team. Noting that in the last 8 years, the Government had focussed extensively on structural reforms the Minister said that each one of those movements has been holding India in good stead during times of crisis. He urged Indian industry to look at boosting value added exports and ensure that new jobs came into India instead of raw materials going out of India. Highlighting the serious efforts being made in that direction, the Minister said that the Government was striving to ensure orderly behaviour of prices and ensure that businesses add value and jobs. Stressing upon Government’s bid to bring down logistics cost through measures such as PM GatiShakti, the Minister said that the National Master Plan would help improve infrastructure planning and ensure implementation of projects within time and budget. Assuring that the Government would wholeheartedly support businesses, the Minister urged industry to bring scale into all economic activities. Expressing concern over the excessive dependence on international supply chains, Shri Goyal urged businesses to procure
locally wherever there is an opportunity. He asked businesses to support each other and help fortify domestic supply chains. Referring to Trade Agreements r e c e n t l y i n k e d w i t h UA E a n d Australia, the Minister said that these agreements were opening new frontiers in international trade. He added that agreements with Canada, EU, UK, Israel and GCC were in the pipeline. The Minister said that the world had great confidence in India and wanted to engage with it enthusiastically. He also assured that every Indian mission had been tasked with supporting Indian industry and pitching for our businesses. Every Mission, every office, every official is now ready to stand for Indian businesses and that is what will spearhead trade 4.0, he added. The Minister remarked that the government was on a mission to rewrite the script of a New India that is ready to play the leading role in global trade and asked investors to come invest in India, in its ideas, talent and limitless potential. India is the future, the Minister said.
CONCOR developing 150 acres MMLP in Varnama, Gujarat Working in Progress on Rs 500-cr MMLP NEW DELHI: C o n t a i n e r Corporation of India (Concor), a Government-owned M u l t i - M o d a l Logistics Company, is developing a Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Gujarat across nearly 150 acres of land at a cost of Rs. 500 crore. The MMLP being developed at Varnama village, nearly 2 0 k m f r o m Va d o d a r a , i s a l s o Concor’s first Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal. The upcoming facility will be near Varnama railway station on the Mumbai-Delhi main line route and will also be close to National Highway (NH) 8. “The project was
envisaged in 2014. Due to land acquisition-related issues and the Covid-19 pandemic, the project was delayed. Now, work has almost completed. We are planning to inaugurate the MMLP by the second week of July,” Rajat Gupta, in-charge of the MMLP, was quoted as saying. Concor has purchased the land through the state’s land acquisition division and the revenue department. Till now, the PSU has spent Rs. 350 crore which includes land acquisition expenses, construction of the entire terminal, MMLP, funding of two railway bridge extensions and the Varnama railway station yard. Another Rs. 150 crore will be spent for connectivity to the D F C I n t e r c h a n g e Ya r d a n d
development of the approach road. An Inland Container Depot (ICD), being developed on nearly 30,000 sq m land (7.20 acre), is also part of the upcoming MMLP project. Going by the growth pattern, containerised traffic is expected to grow by 13% in the first year as the ICD, with full-fledged infrastructure, will be available for trade, against the existing facility which has no warehousing and stuffing facility, Gupta said. He claimed that for Exim trade, the rail-linked ICD would become the nerve centre in Vadodara region for cargo and container movement through road and air, besides rail. More than 600 exporters and importers are expected to be benefited, he added.

Centre bans exports of sugar beyond 10 million tonnes NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned the exports of sugar beyond 10 million tonnes, the latest in a flurry of inflation bursting measures. The Modi Government asked traders to get the permission of the Government for overseas sale of the sweetener from June 1 to October 31. Sugar stocks fell up to 14 per cent intra-day on Tuesday, 24th May. They regained ground after the India Sugar Traders Association termed it as a “precautionary step”, while ISMA (Indian Sugar Mills Association)
officials said the amount of export permitted by the government was more than what the industry had sought. Aditya Jhunjhunwala, President ISMA, said that the industry had sought export of 9.5 million tonnes (mt) for the current marketing season and the Government agreed to 10 million tonnes. “They had agreed more than what the industry had sought for and that would result in an opening stock of 6.5-7 mt sufficient to cater to the country’s
festival season demand.” “So far, mills have signed deals to export over 8.5mt of the sweetener, of which 7.1mt has been shipped. Even if we are able to ship 9.5mt in the current marketing season, it would be the highest,” he said. Vi j e n d e r S i n g h , E x e c u t i v e Director and Deputy CEO, Shree Renuk a Sugars Ltd, told this correspondent, that “it is doubtful if India would be able to ship 8.5 to 9mt as the rainy season would begin and the logistics issue would crop up.”

recent legislation of USA, the BUILD Act 2018. The Agreement is the legal requirement for DFC, to continue providing investment support in India. DFC or their predecessor agencies are active in India since 1974 and have so far provided investment support worth $5.8 billion of which $2.9 billion is still outstanding. Proposals worth $4 billion are under consideration by DFC for providing investment support in India. DFC has
provided investment support in sectors that matter for development such as COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing, healthcare financing, renewable energy, SME financing, financial inclusion, infrastructure etc. It is expected that signing of IIA would lead to enhanced Investment support provided by DFC in India, which shall further help in India’s development.
