India’s wheat exports face disruptions on localized shutdowns, port delays: sources NEW DELHI: India’s wheat exports have hit a roadblock over the past few weeks as the coronavirus pandemic has forced shutdowns and impacted key operations across the country, sources told. Apart from emerging bottlenecks at several key ports of India, like Kandla, Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port, and Visakhapatnam, the industry is witnessing disruptions on the supply side as most major grains markets are shut. Key trade centers in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, major growers of the staple food grain, have been shut for weeks, traders said. “With major markets shut, supply has tightened in open markets and prices are rising,” a trader based in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, said.As supply turns scarce across markets, exporters are also facing difficulties in sourcing the grain for outbound shipments as logistical bottlenecks are creating hurdles, an official with a global food firm said. “At times it is difficult to find vehicles to transport the commodity from different states. It will start impacting exports soon, if the restrictions continue for long,” Delhi-based exporter Anand Goyal said. So far, Indian traders have signed deals to export 200,000 mt over the next few months, trade sources said. Most of the wheat is expected to ship to Bangladesh and Nepal, they added. “If the logjams continue for the next few weeks, it will become difficult to export,” Bangalore-based exporter Pramod Kumar said. For the 2021-22 marketing year, the US Department of Agriculture has estimated India’s wheat exports at 2.2 million mt against 2.3 million mt the previous year. India’s wheat marketing year runs from April through March. India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, was unable to export significant quantities of wheat for several years because its wheat prices were higher compared with other global suppliers due to higher domestic prices. However, given the climb in global wheat prices as inventories had slumped to a two-year low, India finds itself in a position to export wheat. “However, with the difficulties that exporters are facing now, it may dent annual exports by 5% to 10%,” the official with the multinational firm said.

Shapoorji Pallonji-led JV to build LNG facility at Mumbai Port MUMBAI: SP Armada Clean Energy Ventures Private Limited ( S PA C E V P L ) s i g n e d a l i c e n s e agreement with Mumbai Port Trust on May 18 to set up, operate and maintain a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Mumbai harbour for 30 years, according to sources. SP Armada Clean Energy Ventures is 51 per cent owned by Shapoorji Pallonji Oil and Gas Private Limited and the balance stake is held by Bumi Armada Netherlands B.V., a whollyowned subsidiary of Malaysia’s Bumi Armada Berhad. The FSRU will be set up on a Design,
Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis through the publicprivate-partnership (PPP) route. Mumbai Port Trust is looking to tap the growing market demand for natural gas on the west coast of India. The planned FSRU would be the sixth LNG terminal on the west coast and the third in Maharashtra. Currently, there are five LNG terminals commissioned in India — at Dahej and Hazira (Gujarat), Kochi (Kerala) and Dabhol and Jaigarh (Maharashtra). “The demand for LNG has been increasing and it is the stated policy of
the Government of India to double the share of LNG in the energy mix of the economy. LNG imports are expected to be substantial since domestic supply of LNG is not able to meet the demand for which supporting infrastr ucture requires to be developed. FSRUs within port limits offer a low-risk, fast-track and flexible option compared to traditional on-shore LNG terminals,” an official with the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways said. The ministry has issued guidelines for setting up FSRU for handling liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo at major port trusts.
In 2023, most Container ship deliveries in history will take place : Clarkson Research LONDON: Box shipping’s vessel orderbook-to-fleet ratio had steadily decreased from 30% in 2010 to 8.8% at the end of Q3 last year, the lowest figure recorded this century. Since then orders have piled in with Clarkson Research Services reporting the ratio stands at 17.6% today. With big names such as Cosco, Hapag-Lloyd and HMM all rumoured to be readying more orders in the
coming months, the 20% figure is likely to be crossed. Only the LNG sector has a higher ratio – at 23%. In terms of delivery schedules, planning departments at liners around the world will need to brace for an extraordinary 2023 when the the vast majority of the ships now on order will start operating. Indeed, 2023 is shaping up as a year with more boxship deliveries in teu terms than any other in
the near 70-year history of containerisation. There were further gains in containership charter rates to amongst the highest levels ever recorded; 6-12 month charter rate for a 4,400 teu old panamax rose another 4% last week to $50,000 a day, on a par with peak levels seen in 2005. Both secondhand and newbuild box ship prices continue to rise.
India cuts Export subsidy on sugar by one third; Exports to continue due to strong demand say traders NEW DELHI: The central government has slashed the amount of subsidy given for sugar export by one third from Rs 6000/tonne to Rs 4000/tonne. As the industr y has completed export of 95% of the sugar export quota of 60 lakh tonnes, the decision will not have any major adverse impact on the country's sugar exports. The industr y is confident about continuing exports under the open general license (OGL) category thanks to better realisation from exports.
The central government of India had announced a scheme on December 29, 2020 to provide marketing assistance to the sugar mills to facilitate export of sugar enabling them to clear cane price dues of farmers for the sugar season 2020-21. The financial assistance was provided to sugar mills for expenses on marketing costs including handling, upgrading and other processing costs and costs of international and internal transport and freight charges on export of sugar.
“There will not be any major impact on the ongoing sugar exports as agreements for 57 lakh tonnes of sugar exports have been executed till May 19. The OGL exports will begin now. There will not be any impact on domestic prices as these are controlled by the monthly release mechanism," said Praful Vithalani, chairman, All India Sugar Tr a d e r s A s s o c i a t i o n ( A I S TA ) . According to trade estimates, the government will be able to save an outgo of Rs 60 crore of the sugar export subsidy.

Certified Pick up in Port of Antwerp enters next phase Collec ng containers based on iden ty instead of PIN code Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The process, which ensures safe, transparent and efficient handling, applies to all import containers unloaded from seagoing vessels. Registration required by 1 June The second phase of the digital Certified Pick up process will commence on 1 July. From then on, the terminals at the Port of Antwerp will gradually switch to a new way of handling containers, based on identity instead of PIN codes. The MPET and PSA terminals are the first to use the system, which verifies identity through an Alfapass and a finger scan. Because all the shipping companies have to grant a right of release to their customers for this, it is requested that these companies register for the CPu process via the NxtPort website no later than 1 June 2021. More secure, transparent and efcient CPu came into force on 1 January 2021 and ensures that the container release process is safer, more transparent and more efficient. CPu is a neutral, central data platform that connects all the stakeholders involved in the container import process. Through dialogue with the Port Authority, it has been agreed that the implementation of CPu should be phased in. In the initial phase, CPu introduced transparency on the container status in the form of a series of ‘green
lights’, aimed at increasing operational efficiency for every player in the chain. More information can be found at www.portofantwerp.com/cpu or via the online training courses that will be organised in May and June in Dutch and English. Port of Antwerp CEO, Jacques Vandermeiren: “This next phase in the CPu process is an important next step in building a virtually secure port. This new way of working guarantees a rapid and optimised release process for incoming containers, which will then leave the port by rail, inland navigation or truck. The fact this has been achieved in collaboration with the various partners in the port chain is further evidence of the strength and resilience of Antwerp's port community.” Port Alderman Annick De Ridder: “Thanks to this new way of working, we are taking our social responsibility as a port community to combat international drugs trafficking. Along with the various partners, this is how we are throwing our weight behind further security for the logistics chain and making the transition to a digital ecosystem that should also lead to efficiency gains for the companies.”

Importers to make prior disclosure to Customs to avail concessional duty on goods: CBIC NEW DELHI: Importers taking advantage of concessional rate of import duty will have to give prior information to the customs officers about goods being imported and also its estimated quantity and value, the CBIC has said. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has amended the Customs (Import of Goods at Concessional Rate of Duty) Amendment Rules, which lay down the procedures and manner in which an importer can avail the benefit of a concessional duty on import of goods required for domestic production of goods or providing services. One major change that accommodates the needs of trade and industry is that the imported goods have been permitted to be sent out for ‘job work’. The absence of this facility had earlier constrained the industry, especially those in the MSME sector which did not have the complete manufacturing capability in-house. Even importers who do not have any manufacturing facility can now avail the IGCR, 2017, to import goods at a concessional customs duty and get the final goods manufactured entirely on job work basis. However, some sectors such as gold, jewellery, precious stones and metals have been excluded.
“An importer who intends to import goods at a concessional rate of duty shall give a one-time prior information of such goods being imported to the jurisdictional customs officer. “He shall also furnish the name and address of the premises of the importer and his job worker, if any; the nature and description of imported goods used in the manufacture of goods at the premises of the importer or the job worker, if any; and the nature of output service rendered utilising imported goods,” the CBIC said in a circular. The importer would also have to give prior-intimation before import regarding the estimated quantity and value of goods to be imported, the exemption notification and serial number, the estimated duty forgone and the port of import with respect to a consignment. “This information may be provided by e-mail on a consolidated basis for a period not exceeding one year rather than in a transactional manner for every import,” the CBIC added. Another major incentive provided in the amended rules is to allow those who import capital goods at a concessional customs duty to clear them in the domestic market on payment of duty and interest at a depreciated value.
This was not allowed earlier, and manufacturers were stuck with the imported capital goods after having used them as they could not be easily reexported. The CBIC said the Rules have been amended in view of the demands from the trade and industry and having regard to their changing needs as per prevalent global practices. “The amendments are also an effort towards creating an enabling environment for the promoting manufacturing by domestic industry to make them competitive globally and also make them self-reliant in furtherance of the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” the CBIC said. The rules further said an importer shall utilise the imported goods for the intended paurpose or re-export the same, within a period of six months from the date of import, failing which the importer is liable to payment of duty with interest. In case the importer intends to clear the unutilised or defective goods on payment of requisite duty and interest, the import duty payable would be equal to the difference between the duty leviable on such goods but for the exemption availed and that already paid, if any, at the time of importation, along with interest.
E-way bill integrated with FasTag, RFID; GST Officers to get real-time data of commercial vehicles NEW DELHI: GST Officers have been armed with real-time data of commercial vehicle movement on highways with the integration of the e-way bill (EWB) system with FasTag and RFID, a move which will help in live vigilance of such vehicles and check GST evasion. Additional features have been added to the e-way bill mobile application of tax officers, which will provide them real-time tracking details of e-way bill and vehicle to help them nab tax evaders who are misusing the e-way bill system. Under the goods and services tax (GST) regime, e-way bills have been made mandatory for inter-state transportation of goods valued over Rs 50,000 from April 2018. However, gold is exempted. In the electronic way (e-way) bill system, businesses and transporters have to produce before a GST inspector the eway bill, if asked. On average 25 lakh goods vehicle movements from more than 800 tolls are reported on a daily basis to the e-way bill system. The integration of e-way bill, RFID and FasTag will enable tax officers to undertake live vigilance in respect of e-way bill compliances by businesses and will aid in preventing revenue leakage by real-time identification of cases of recycling of EWBs, non-generation of EWBs. Taxmen can now access reports on vehicles that have passed the selected tolls without e-way bills in the past few minutes. Also, the vehicles carrying critical commodities specific to the state and have passed the selected toll can be viewed.
Any suspicious vehicles and vehicles o f E WB s g e ne r a t e d b y su spic io u s taxpayer GSTINs , that have passed the selected toll on a near real-time basis, can also be viewed in this report. The officers can use these reports while conducting vigilance and make the vigilance activity more effective. Also, the officers of the audit and enforcement wing can use these reports to identify fraudulent transactions like bill trading, recycling of EWBs. AMRG Associates Senior Partner Rajat Mohan said “online real-time tracking of vehicles and goods would go a long way in tightening the lid on tax evaders. This mobile application for tax officers would empower them to catch hold of all the stakeholders involved in clandestine removal of goods.” EY India Tax Partner Abhishek Jain said CBIC had earlier conveyed its intention to further digitise the process of enforcement of e-way bill provisions under the GST law, and in line with this idea, the e-way bill system has now been integrated with the FasTag and RFID system, and MIS (Management Information Systems) reports from the same will made available on officer’s mobile app. “This is a commendable move on the part of government and points towards the development in the field of technology and how the government is pro-active in using the same to ensure tax compliance and track fraudulent activities,” Jain added. Last month, in a report titled ‘E-way Bill – A journey of three years, the government had said 180 crore e-way bills have been generated in three
years till March 2021. Of this, only 7 crore bills were verified by tax officers. In 2020-21 fiscal, ended March 2021, 61.68 crore e-way bills were generated, of which 2.27 crore were picked up for verification. In the 2019-20 fiscal, ended March 2020, 62.88 crore e-way bills were generated, of which 3.01 crore were picked up for verification by tax officers. The top five states in which generated maximum number of e-way bill for interstate movement of goods were generated are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The top five sectors where maximum e-way bills were generated in the past three years are textiles, electrical machinery, machinery and mechanical appliances, iron and steel, and automobiles. With effect from January 1, 2021, the government has integrated RFID/FasTag with the e-way bill system and a transporter is required to have a RFID tag in his vehicle and details of the e-way bill generated for goods being carried by the vehicle is uploaded into the RFID. When the vehicle passes the RFID Tag reader on the highway, the details fed into the device get uploaded on the government portal. The information is later used by the revenue officials to validate the supplies made by a GST registered person. To improve tax compliance, the government has also started blocking EWB bill generation if a GST registered taxpayer has not filed GSTR- 3B return for the last two successive months.

MOL and partners demonstrates World 1st Successful Test of Auto Berthing and Un-berthing System, Using a Large Car Ferry and Actual Pier
TOKYO-Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES-S; President: Isamu Funazu; Headquarters: Chuoku, Tokyo), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto; Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo), Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMST; President: Toshio Iseki; Headquarters: Minatoku, Tokyo), Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen) Inc. (President: Taiji Maeda; Headquarters: Akishima-shi, Tokyo), and MOL Ferry Co., Ltd. (President: Naotoshi Omoto; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) today announced the success of a demonstration test (from March to April 2021) of their jointly developed auto berthing and unberthing system at an actual pier in Oarai Port, Ibaraki Prefecture, using the large-size car ferry Sunflower Shiretoko, owned by MOL Ferry. Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism (MLIT) selected this joint initiative for its autonomous vessel demonstration project.
This demonstration test is a world first from two aspects: use of a large car ferry (gross tonnage: 11,410 tons) on one of its service routes; conducting the test using an actual pier. The project team developed the ship operation plan, operation guide, criteria for canceling the test, and so on, and used simulations to conduct a thorough safety assessment under various conditions. In addition, the team conducted the demonstration test and verifying safety on the vessel in service by autonomously berthing and un-berthing at a virtual pier projected on the water. Leveraging the results of this demonstration test, the project team will conduct demonstration tests of auto berthing and un-berthing at actual berths with other ship types, with the aim of developing a highly versatile technology. MES-S, MOL, TUMST, Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen), MOL Ferry continually strive to ensure safe, reliable maritime traffic and reduce seafarers’ workload through activities to realize autonomous ship operations including the auto berthing and un-berthing demonstration test project.

Cargoes shifting Vessel types in Dry Bulk sector : Braemar ACM LONDON: Dry bulk shipping has been playing pass the parcel over the past year with certain cargoes now switching to different sized ships. This is most evident in the coal trades, where capesizes have clawed back much business in 2021 from smaller ships. Braemar ACM data shows that year-to-date, capes have accounted for about 30% of total coal trade, up by 4% year-on-year, returning to their market share in 2018 with India in particular driving a ramp-up in cape imports. Other cargoes are also experiencing a vessel shuffle. In grains, for instance, although handies have continued to lose market share to panamaxes, supras
appear to have made some gains so far this year, climbing to 29% from 27% in 2020, according to Braemar ACM, on the back of soaring exports from the US Gulf as well as increasing fertiliser imports into America. Braemar ACM has also detailed how supras have gained market share this year from handies in the steel sector. Supramaxes have accounted for 53% of bulk steel trade so far in 2021, up by more than 5% versus last year. At the lower-value end of the cargo spectrum, cargoes appear to be moving in ever larger ships. In the aggregates trade, for example, capesizes’ share of tonnes moved has grown from virtually
nothing in 2018 to 4% so far this year. The portion of this trade hauled by panamaxes has meanwhile increased from 26% last year to 28% so far this year. Helping explain why this particular trend was occurring in the aggregates trade, Braemar ACM noted: “A growing pool of overage tonnage in the Cape and Pa n a m a x s e c t o r s i s a l s o p a r t l y responsible. With major iron ore and grain charterers imposing age restrictions on vessels they use, aggregates trade in the Arab Gulf, for example, is one of the limited trades where these vessels can find employment, and these old ships often come at a discount to benchmark rates.”
Jackfruits from Tripura exported to London : APEDA NEW DELHI: In a major step towards harnessing exports potential of agricultural and processed food products from north-eastern region, a shipment of 1.2 metric tonne (MT) of fresh jackfruit was today exported from Tripura to London. Jackfruits were sourced from the Tripura based Krishi Sanyoga Agro Producer Company Ltd. The consignment was packed at APEDA assisted pack-house facility of Salt Range Supply Chain Solution Ltd and exported by Kiega EXIM Pvt Ltd. This was the first APEDA assisted pack house for exports to European Union, which was approved in May 2021. APEDA regularly carries out
promotional activities to bring the North- Eastern states on the export map of India. The virtual event to send the jackfruit shipment to London was attended by officials including Dr M Angamuthu, Chairman, APEDA and CK Jamatia, Secretar y, Agriculture, Government of Tripura and other senior officials. Recently, the first consignment of ‘red rice’ was sent to the USA from Assam. Iron rich ‘red rice’ is grown in Brahmaputra valley of Assam, without the use of any chemical fertilizer. The rice variety is referred as ‘Bao-dhaan’, which is an integral part of the Assamese food.
APEDA undertakes market promotion activities for evolving structured marketing strategies for export of food products, market intelligence for taking infor med decisions, international exposure, skill development, capacity building and high-quality packaging. P romoting products of northeastern region is APEDA’s thrust areas of work. APEDA would continue to focus on north eastern region both in terms of capacity building, quality up gradation, infrastructure development. Linking buyers to farmer’s, strengthening entire supply chain of agricultural produce from the north-eastern region would bring in dividend.
Commerce Ministry to boost mango exports to South Korea NEW DELHI: In a bid to increase mangoes exports to South Korea, APEDA in collaboration with Indian embassy, Seoul and Indian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ICCK), organised a Virtual Buyer Seller Meet (VBSM). Senior officials from APEDA , Embassy of India, ICCK, exporters from India and importers from South Korea participated in the VBSM organised recently. Due to the ongoing Covid19 pandemic, the export promotion programmes were not possible to be organized physically. APEDA took a lead
to organize Virtual BSM to provide a platform to the exporters and importers of mangoes from India and South Korea. Earlier this month, for the first time in this season, India has shipped a consignment of 2.5 Metric Tonne (MTs) of Geographical Indication (GI) certified Banganapalli & other variety Survarnarekha mangoes sourced from farmers in Krishna & Chittor districts of Andhra Pradesh The mangoes exported to South Korea, were treated, cleaned & shipped from the APEDA assisted and registered packhouse & vapor heat
treatment facility at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh and exported by IFFCO Kisan SEZ (IKSEZ). This was the first export consignment sent by IKSEZ, which is a subsidiary of IFFCO, a multi-state cooperative with a membership of 36,000 societies. There is possibility of more exports of mangoes to South Korea this season. IFFCO Kisan SEZ has an agreement with Meejaim, South Korea for supplying 66 MTs of mango this season. Andhra Pradesh horticulture department also collaborated in this endeavour.
India may impose anti-dumping duty on Phthalic Anhydride imports from China, others NEW DELHI: India may impose antidumping duty on Phthalic Anhydride imported from China, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand, based on an application filed by IG Petrochemicals Limited, SI Group India Private Limited and Thirumalai Chemicals. The
Directorate General of Trade Remedies under the commerce and industry ministry, has recommended duty between $40.08- 140.17 per MT on the imports of the chemical intermediate used in the plastic industry. “The domestic industry has suffered
material injury. There is a causal link between dumping of product under consideration and injury to the domestic industry,” DGTR said in a notification. While DGTR recommends the duty, the final call to impose it is taken by the finance ministry.
Forex reserves at record high to $590.028 billion MUMBAI: The country’s foreign exchange reserves rose by USD 563 million to reach USD 590.028 billion in the week ended May 14, RBI data showed. The reserves had touched a lifetime high of USD 590.185 billion in the week ended January 29, 2021. In the previous week ended May 7, 2021, the reserves had increased by USD
1.444 billion to USD 589.465 billion. During the reporting week ended May 14, 2021, the rise in the forex kitty was mainly on account of an increase in foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves. FCAs jumped by USD 377 billion to USD 546.87 billion in the reporting week, as per
weekly data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The special drawing rights (SDRs) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) increased by USD 2 million to USD 1.506 billion. The country’s reserve position with the IMF increased by USD 10 million to USD 4.999 billion in the reporting week, the data showed.

India Exports record 20 MT of rice, wheat in FY21 NEW DELHI: Defying Covid blues, India exported a record 19.8 million tonne (MT) of rice and wheat in FY21 on the back of attractive overseas prices of the commodities and massive surplus production at home. Brimming official inventory (mainly for welfare programmes) also ensured that no export curb was imposed by the government in a pandemic year. Rice exports almost doubled to an all-time high of 17.7 MT last fiscal, against 9.5 MT a year ago. Similarly, wheat exports surged to 2.1 MT in FY21, the highest since FY15 and compared with just 0.2 MT in the previous year, showed the official data. There was an almost 4% increase in basmati exports to 4.45 MT and a 160%
surge in non-basmati to 13.09 MT in FY21, according to data with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda). In value terms, while the non-basmati rice segment more than doubled to $4.8 billion ( Rs 35,448 crore), even higher than basmati, there is a drop of 7% to $4 billion (Rs 29,849 crore) in shipments of aromatic varieties. Demand for wheat, non-basmati rice and other cereals is likely to rise further, M Angamuthu, Chairman of Apeda, said recently. On the back of rising international prices, Indian cereal export became more viable, particularly that of wheat. T h e U N Fo o d a n d A g r i c u l t u r a l Organization’s global cereal price
index is currently ruling at 125.1, highest since May 2014. “We ensured supplies were not disrupted due to lockdown as all concer ned gover nment agencies provided necessary support to exporters and facilitated physical movement. While regulatory compliances were minimised, there was no compromise on quality,” Angamuthu had said. Meanwhile, official grain inventory, too, remain elevated. According to Food Corporation of India, the official reserves had 77.23 MT of grains as of April 1, up 4.6% from a year earlier. The stocks were almost four times of the overall buffer and strategic reserve requirements.
Paradip Port receives 24 Medical Oxygen Cylinders PARADIP: The Paradip Port Trust (PPT) handled 24 medical oxygen cylinders (40-litre capacity each), along with 5 breathing medical oxygen cylinders and oxygen regulator-humidifiers, brought in by MV Anna Maria from Singapore recently. The medical equipment which reached here this evening is meant for distribution among various State-run hospitals in Jagatsinghpur district. Additional District Magistrate (ADM)
Paradip, Kanhu Charan Dhir received the oxygen cylinders on behalf of the State Government. The Paradip International Cargo Terminal Private Limited (PICTPL) handled 30 medical oxygen cylinders (10-litre capacity each), sent by the shipping line Louis Dreyfus Company Freight Asia from Singapore in MV Glory Amsterdam for PPT Hospital. In the wake of resurgence of COVID-19, the Steel Authority of India along with Paradip Customs have provided necessary
assistance in this endeavour. This is the first time medical oxygen is being handled at Paradip Port, PPT stated.
Exports of GI certified Gholvad Sapota (chikoo) for Maharashtra to UK begins MUMBAI: In a major boost to exports of Geographical Indication (GI) certified products, a consignment of Dahanu Gholvad Sapota from Palghar district of Maharashtra was shipped to the United Kingdom. GI certification of Ghovad Sapota is held by Maharashtra Rajya Chikoo Utpadak Sangh and the fruit is known for its sweet and unique taste. It is believed that the unique taste is derived from calcium rich soil of Gholvad village. Currently in the Palgahr district, around 5000 hectares of land is under sapota or plantation. Out of 5000 farmers who grow Sapota, 147 far mers are authorized GI users.
The Dahanu Gholvad Sapota, sourced from the authorized GI users, were sorted and graded from the APEDA assisted and registered packhouse facility at Kay Bee Agro International Private Limited, Tapi (Gujarat) and exported by Kay Bee exports. At present, the demand in the importing countries are mainly from the ethnic population and Dr M Angamuthu, Chairman, APEDA said that export can increase many folds if the mainstream buyers are also targeted as Sapota can be grown throughout the year unlike other fruits. APEDA has been thrust on promotion of exports of GI products. GI products with its uniqueness, intrinsic value and
practically no competition from outsiders, offers good potential for export. Sapota is grown in many statesKarnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka is known to be the highest grower of the fruit, followed by Maharashtra. It can be used in fruit salads, blended into milk or yogurt, as a smoothie or processed to make a jam out of it. Earlier this month, a consignment of 2 . 5 M e t r i c To n n e o f G I c e r t i f i e d Banganapalli & Survarnarekha mangoes sourced from farmers in Krishna & Chittor districts of Andhra Pradesh was exported to South Korea.
Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of IMO agrees to initiate new measures to detect and report Containers lost at sea GENEVA: The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has agreed to initiate new measures to detect and report containers lost at sea, which may enhance their positioning, tracking and recovery. As informed, the UN maritime body agreed to establish a compulsory system to declare the loss of containers and setting up means on board to easily identify the exact number of losses. Together with such a system, the ships are obliged to report the loss of container(s) through a standardized procedure, possibly detailing, e.g. identification, cargo carried (particularly
dangerous goods or harmful substances), or whether these containers may float and constitute a risk of collision with ships and boats. The MSC 103 meeting was held remotely from 5 to 14 May. One of the issues discussed at the meeting was new measures addressing containers lost at sea. Containers lost at sea represent a potential danger to maritime safety and are a threat to the environment, particularly with regard to the plastics they contain. Over the course of three months late last year and early this year, almost 3,500 containers were lost in a number of incidents in the Western Pacific.
This is far above the numbers usually registered for the same period and has raised concern regarding the causes of these incidents. The causes that may lead, in some cases, to the loss of containers at sea vary from bad weather conditions to high waves creating instability on board. The fact is that it is difficult to have precise figures on the number of containers lost, particularly as container visibility from the bridge may be limited by the containers themselves, and only the upper tiers and the nearest bays can be seen, according to BIMCO.

How standardisation is bridging Container Shipping’s Digital divide : DCSA AMSTERDAM: The digital revolution has changed the way the world does business. That change has been more evident and more rapid than ever before over the past year as all industries grapple with the challenges of COVID-19. Container shipping is no exception to the digital revolution, but the pace and benefits of that change have not always been equally felt by all participants. On the one hand, carriers, ports and terminals are making enormous use of technology to fast-track their operations and boost efficiency. The average modern container vessel contains thousands of sensors and entire ports can be remotely operated. At the same time, the customer experience has not seen benefits accelerate at the same speed. At DCSA, we believe standards can bridge that divide, enabling interoperability that will bring tangible benefits to both shipping service providers and their customers. The right to roam For proof of this theory, we need only look at some of the more digitally advanced industries such as banking and telecommunications. Those of us who are old enough to remember travelling between Europe and the United States or Japan in the early 2000s will remember the frustration of not being able to use your regular mobile phone on arrival because of the different technologies used on different continents. Today this seems like ancient history. Global network standards have enabled the creation of triband and quadband phones which means most consumers no longer have to face any barriers to international roaming except the costs! Similarly in banking, the introduction of the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) by SWIFT has revolutionised the consumer’s experience of managing their money. This internationally agreed system to identify bank accounts across national borders has reduced the risk of errors and enabled automation of transactions. Without IBAN it would be hard to imagine internet or mobile banking. Financial interoperability has also enabled a better consumer experience on the high street. When (if ever) was the last time you checked a shop window for a VISA or Master Card symbol before deciding to make a purchase? These days the consumer does not have to worry about who is processing their payment, pretty much every credit card can be accepted in every store thanks to the interoperability that comes with internationally agreed financial digital standards. How DCSA can help bridge shipping’s digital divide Container shipping still has a way to go before it achieves a similar level of consumer experience to these industries. At DCSA we firmly believe such advances are a matter of “when” not “if ”, and that the benefits will be obvious to all. One day a shipper will be able to book an end-to-end journey for their cargo on multiple modes of transport in one transaction and get instant confirmation. They’ll also be able to track the progress of their shipment in real-time with proactive notifications of delays or schedule changes. It’ll be as normal as booking a trip with connecting flights, a hotel and an airport transfer from a single
mobile app; or tracking the delivery of an online purchase from warehouse to your front door. So how do we get there? As we’ve seen in the banking and telecoms examples, the answer is developing digital standards that enable this level of interoperability and ensuring they’re widely adopted. And that’s where DCSA comes in. Top priorities for our members Since our foundation in 2019 we’ve been working on two parallel tracks. Firstly, we’re facilitating discussions on topics that matter internally to the industry such as cybersecurity or just-in-time port calls. Secondly, we’re also finding standardised ways for service providers to expose relevant data to customers that’s timely, accurate and actionable. Considering both these areas holistically is essential to ensuring the standards we develop work for all parties in the supply chain. One of the highest priorities for DCSA’s member carriers is to establish standards that will support the digitalisation of international trade, in other words digital documentation processes. That’s why we’re putting a lot of work into defining standards for the electronic bill of lading, the electronic letter of credit and electronic certificates. It’s a topic which holds vast potential, even though change will not be delivered overnight. It’s a multi-year journey with a very wide range of stakeholders. But we’ve been really pleased with the variety of individuals and groups that have agreed to collaborate in the process, from the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to many banks and insurers. Top priorities for shippers Meanwhile the ongoing congestion in ports on the west coast of the USA offers a clear illustration of why “timely, accurate and actionable” data is so badly needed. Many shippers have been left with little or no insight into the conditions of their cargo, as post-COVID backlogs continue to cause delays. DCSA is working on two key standards that will help improve visibility for shippers in the future. The most promising in the long term is the standard for industrial IoT for smart containers. However, implementing this standard will require substantial investment and adoption and is therefore likely to grow over time. In the short term, DCSA’s Track and Trace (T&T) standard is much more easily applied and is already making a difference. T&T enables customers of the industry to exchange data with multiple carriers using one API instead of today’s collection of bespoke solutions. We recently reached a significant T&T milestone with the majority of our member carriers now adopting the T&T standard and either already providing, or soon to provide, customers with access to the standards-based API. There is still much for DCSA and its collaborators to do, but the prospects are good. We expect more carriers to adopt the T&T standard in the coming months and we’re continuing to develop our cyber security and eDocumentation initiatives. If we are to succeed in bridging that digital divide, it will take all parts of the industry to get involved and stay the course. The kind of innovation and interoperability enjoyed by the telecoms and banking industries can be ours if we’re willing to work together.
Evergreen Ace to become the Largest Boxship with 23,992 TEUs TAIWAN: Evergreen’s 23,992 TEUs Ever Ace to be delivered by Samsung Heavy Industries in July, will ensure that it surpasses HMM’s latest series of megamaxes by just 28 TEUs to take the mantle of the world’s largest boxship, a record that has been broken on an annual or even biannual basis for the last five years. The ship, sporting a new green look, will be deployed on Evergreen’s CEM service connecting Asia with North Europe, according to Alphaliner. The Ever Ace is the first of 10 in a series that Evergreen will receive from Samsung Heavy in South Korea and CSSC
in China this year and next. The Ever Ace features a new bulbless design and a hull with a bright green colour, a departure from previous Evergreen liveries. Alphaliner describes the new Evergreen ship as coming with a highly-flared bow and a full width of 24 container rows in the first bay. Lashing bridges reach four tiers high with so-called Mickey Mouse ears into the fifth tier. Containership size records have repeatedly been broken in recent years, climbing above the 20,000 teu mark for the first time in 2017. Boxships have more than tripled in size in terms of carrying capacity since the start of the century.
