Adani Ports cargo volumes accelerate to 300 million metric tonnes India’s largest transport u lity on course to achieve 500 MMT by 2025 AHMEDABAD: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (“APSEZ”), the largest integrated transport utility in India and a part of the diversified Adani Group, has crossed a historic milestone by handling 300 MMT of cargo well ahead of the year end (March 2022). APSEZ has registered unprecedented growth since it started operations just over two decades ago and continues to outperform all India cargo volume growth, with its market share rising rapidly. “The acceleration of our cargo volumes is a manifestation of our ability to continue to execute on our strategy,” said Mr Karan Adani, CEO and Whole Time Director, APSEZ. “Our network of ports across the Indian coastline coupled with our integrated logistics capabilities, focus on technology enabled digitised operations and, most importantly, the deep relations that we have built with our customers and partners (that include the global shipping lines), are all coming together to make APSEZ a full-fledged integrated ports & logistics platform that augments each other. We anticipate our growth to continue to accelerate given our capabilities that are now best-in-class and the tailwind of a growing Indian economy.” “This achievement also underlines the ability of APSEZ to adapt to fast paced changes due to global market and geopolitical volatility and continue its journey towards sustainable growth. I must thank our dedicated teams that drive our growth and our great workforce that makes it all happen on the ground. We are confident of reaching our goal of 500 MMT by 2025 and emerge as the world’s largest private ports company by 2030.” APSEZ has been continuously accelerating the time taken to increase cargo volumes. While it took 14 years to achieve 100 MMT annually (with five ports in its portfolio), APSEZ doubled it to 200 MMT annually (with nine ports in its portfolio) in just the
next five years. Now, with 12 ports in its portfolio, APSEZ’s milestone of handling 300 MMT annually has come about in just three years. Remarkably, the three-year journey from 200 MMT to 300 MMT includes the two-year period of global economic slowdown due to the pandemic. In parallel with ramping up its business operations, APSEZ has also significantly delivered on its commitments to sustainability. Energy and emission intensity has been reduced by around 30% from 2016 levels. Electrification of Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) has been completed, and that of Quay Cranes and Mobile Harbour Cranes is in progress, with 2023 as the target completion year. Diesel-based Internal Transfer Vehicles (ITVs) are being replaced by electric ITVs. The first batch of 100 electric ITVs is likely to arrive in mid-2022 and the total count is expected to cross 400 in 2023. Another green port initiative is a 50% discount on Port Dues, Pilotage and Berth Hire Charges for ships using LNG as a fuel. With enhanced afforestation and several other green measures already underway, APSEZ is well on its way to achieving its target of carbon neutrality by 2025.
Sinokor orders bigger Box ships to boost capacity on India service SEOUL: Sinokor Merchant Marine, South Korea’s largest non-listed shipping company, has ordered 8,000 TEU ships for the first time. The company, through subsidiary Sinokor Line, usually operates intra-Asia services using ships of up to 4,000 TEU, and functions as a tonnage provider of vessels up to around 6,000 TEU. Sinokor has confirmed orders for a dozen newbuildings at Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, whose shipyards include Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD). The orders comprise six 8,000 TEU vessels, four at 2,800 TEU and two of 1,000 TEU.
HMD, which also won orders for four 2,500 TEU ships from Sinokor in February, is expected to build the smaller vessels. A Sinokor representative said the 8,000 TEU ships could be assigned to its Far East-India service, which currently deploys 4,000 TEU vessels, boosting its capacity on the tradelane. The company is the 20th largest liner operator, with 108,063 TEU of capacity. In recent weeks, there has been a surge of orders for 7,0008,000 TEU vessels from liner operators and tonnage providers, including China United Lines, Regional Container Lines, Danaos and Eastern Pacific Shipping. Such ships are suitable for deployment on the East Asia-Persian Gulf/India route.

To exports any type of goods, it's mandatory for exporters to get Certificate of Origin from the local Chamber of Commerce and submit it along with export document to get clearance from the Customs Department in those Countries where they are exporting goods. On this occasion, President of Gandhidham Chamber Shri Teja Kangad welcomed all the members of exporters, CHA & Shipping agents and explained the importance of the Seminar. Honorary Secretary Shri Mahesh Tirthani gave a detailed explanation of necessity of this meeting to provide insights and necessary guidance on what has been offline and online for some time and now going to be fully online from the new financial year. Those who have done online registration can get the certificate online by depositing the amount in it immediately through E-Wallet.
The whole process was later explained in detail by the staff of Chambers through Power Point Presentation along with flow chart of the entire online process & explained that all the exporters are first needed to obtain their digital signature (DSC) with their IEC code and after the registration process the application is verified and authorised by the Chamber. By having this online process, it will speed up the process and save time, stationary and manpower. The COO (Non-Preferential) online process will now compulsory from 1st of April 2022. Mr. Teja Kangad - President of Gandhidham Chamber, Mr. Mahesh Tirthani - Hon. Secretary, Mr. Harish Maaheshwari - Treasurer, Mr. Narendra RamaniConvener of the Port & Customs Sub-Committee of the Chamber, Mr. Sewakram Lakhwani-Member of the Executive Committee and Exporters, CHA & Shipping members attended in large scale, according to Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
A delegation of 90 members of FFFAI to host Executive Committee meeting in Dubai coinciding with World Expo 2020 MUMBAI: The Executive Committee of the Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations in India (FFFAI) hosted its 4th EC Meeting on March 23, 2022 in Dubai while participating in the World Expo 2020 in Association with the Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO) organised event- 3rd Logix 2022 started on March 21, 2022. On this occasion, the three-day FFFAI delegation, which is being headed by Mr Shankar Shinde, Chairman, FFFFAI, would be having various meetings and conferences including the Importance of India –UAE CEPA agreement. FFFAI Executive Committee Members include its 28 Member Associations representatives from across the country and would be taking delegation to represent the logistics sector During the 3 days delegation there would be various business networking meetings organised with trade and Logistics Associations. “The initiatives of FIEO –FFFAI in organising the delegation to the event for Logistics is very important as Logistics is the backbone of the economy and plays an important role in supply chain and cost effective solutions to boost the economy,”Mr Shinde pointed out. The 3 Day Mega International Buyer Seller Meet LOGIX INDIA, is an initiative focused at improving Cost effectiveness and operational efficiencies and to create an effective Trade logistic system. According to FIEO sources, the first two
editions of the show which were held in New Delhi witnessed over 3000 B2B meetings. The past editions of the show had over 120 International delegates from over 24 countries and around 140 Indian Logistics, Warehousing & Shipping Companies. The show is aimed at exploring investment opportunities in infrastructure development, warehouse consolidation, technology integration, IT enablement & skilling of manpower. 3rd Logix India 2022 shall bring together people, processes, and technology together to create efficiencies in global supply chain logistics. Currently India’s logistics sector is highly defragmented and the aim is to reduce the logistics cost from the present 14% of GDP to less than 10% by 2022. Accordingly, Indian Government plans to spend USD 1.5 trillion in improving infrastructure and most of the investments will take place in improving airports, ports, roads and rail connectivity. Sizeable investments will also be made in AI, IoT and Big Data for transformation of the supply chain and logistics industry. Organising the LOGIX INDIA 2022 in Dubai is very significant in view of the fact that the strategic location is a very strong transit point with all required logistics infrastructure and allied facilities. On the other hand, with the recent signing of INDIA - UAE FTA, the trade opportunities between the two countries are expected to grow at phenomenal pace. Trade is expected to touch USD 100billion in the next 5 years and most Indian items are now duty free to UAE.
Gateway Distriparks announces relisting as a New Merged Entity on Stock Exchanges NEW DELHI: Gateway Distriparks Limited (GDL), a leading integrated inter-modal logistics facilitator in India, has announced its relisting as a new merged entity under the same name on BSE and NSE, effective with the opening of trading on March 22, 2022. The company completed its group amalgamation activities in December 2021. The three group companies – Gateway Distriparks Ltd., Gateway Rail Freight Ltd and Gateway East India Pvt. Ltd. have all merged into a single entity. For every one share of the erstwhile company, shareholders have received four shares of the newly merged company. The combined entity now owns 9 inland container depots and container freight stations across the country, and provides rail & road transportation with 31 train sets, over 500 trailers, supported by over 1.2 million square feet of warehousing space. Mr. Prem Kishan Das Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, commented, “This merger will enhance the value for the shareholders of the merged company, as a strong balance
sheet with combined assets and cash flows will not only reduce the debt, but the company will also have cash available for expansion in new rail terminals. Going ahead, with the development of dedicated freight corridors across the country, a higher share of cargo will be carried over rail which will be more efficient and help India achieve its sustainability targets, in which Gateway Distriparks will play a major role.”

Freight movement increased in Ganga by 88% since 2017: Govt NEW DELHI: The freight movement on National Waterway-1, which is based along the river Ganga, has increased by 88 percent since 2017, the government said on March 22. The cumulative freight movement on the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system or NW-1 in 2016-17 stood at 4.89 million tonne. It increased to 9.21 MT in 2020-21, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways said. "Freight movement on NW-1 (The Ganga) has increased from 4.89 Million Tonne in 2016-17 to 9.21 MT in 202-21 thereby marking an increase of 88% since 2016-17 and Compound Annual
Growth Rate (CAGR) of 17%," a statement issued by the ministry noted. The statement also said that the Inland Waterways Authority of India has undertaken the implementation of the World Bank-assisted Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) at a total cost of Rs 4,634 crore. This includes the work on activities aligned to the Arth Ganga Concept at a cost of Rs 746 crore, it added. "On the concept of Arth Ganga, JMVP-II was conceptualized in July 2020 with the objective of boosting socio -economic development and economic benefits to the farmers,
traders & public living around the Ganga, logistics cost reduction, etc. Arth- Ganga programme is at the initial stage and is progressing as per the original schedule," the ministry further said. Notably inland water transport (IWT) offers a cost-effective alternative to the popular modes of surface transport. Moving a tonne of freight via rail costs Rs 1.36 per kilometre and Rs 2.50/km via highways. In comparison, a cost of Rs 1.09/km would be incurred through IWT, the government said, citing the findings of the 'RITES Report of 2014'.
Jindal Steel & Power bags Paradip Port Tender PARADIP: Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL), managed by Naveen Jindal, has won a tender announced by the state-owned Paradip Port Authority to build a 25-million-tonne (mt) capacity, deep draught, dry bulk cargo terminal at the port’s Western Dock in Odisha for a total investment of Rs 2,392.13 crore. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), which is appealing
its disqualification from port contracts in numerous courts, including the Odisha High Court, did not submit a price quotation when the bids were o p e n e d r e c e n t l y, a c c o r d i n g t o government sources. JSPL won the contract over Essar Ports Ltd and Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd. Paradip Port Authority disqualified APSEZ from the tender on March 10.
This move came a week after a singlejudge Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court upheld the decision by Visakhapatnam Port Authority, also State-owned, to exclude APSEZ from a tender for mechanisation of West Quay Berths 7 and 8 at the port in Vizag citing termination of a coal terminal run by India’s biggest private port operator there.
Trade from Russia, Ukraine near standstill; COVID in China a concern: FIEO NEW DELHI: India imports around $8.5 billion worth of goods from Russia and about $2.5 billion worth of goods from Ukraine (as of 2021). Separately, many of the affected Chinese areas are tech-heavy importers and exporters. Also, both container and other freight rates have been rising over the past two years, about 4-5 times higher than what they were in 2020 or late 2019. Ajay Sahai, Director General & CEO, Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations (FIEO), was recently quoted as saying that the trade with Russia and Ukraine has almost come to a standstill. Concerns around SWIFT ban and lack of certainty on how long other banks in Russia will remain unsanctioned have been playing a huge role in determining current and future course of action. However, traders are trying to find ways and routes to resume trade with Russia, he said. He said, "Virtually, the export-import has stopped. Some consignments have been
routed through International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) route, but the frequency of shipment is very irregular. We have huge concerns with regard to the payment which has been stuck up after this SWIFT ban has come and of course, we are exploring the possibility of not only getting those payments, but also continuing with our trade with Russia. A couple of solutions have already been made, but it is almost a complete halt of trade with Russia and Ukraine." Coming to China, Sahai said that there are concerns regarding trade with China due to COVID. However, he does not think there will be much disruptions when it comes to management of inventory. He said, "We are having a lot of concerns with regard to our trade with China. But so far, I think the bigger problem is in Schengen province and the Shanghai port, and it may impact a lot of electronics imports, which are happening." "I have been given to understand that they have the inventory for next two to three months. But if the disruption
continues a little longer, we may have some challenges, and therefore alternative option needs to be explored. But as of now, I am not looking into any kind of disruption so far as the management of inventory is concerned for exports," he added. On supply side disruptions, Sahai does not expect freight rates to come down any time soon. He also added that container shortage may persist for some time. “We were expecting that freight rate will become somber from the second quarter of 2022 but with this new development of Russia-Ukraine war, we are not expecting freight to come down and container shortage may still continue," Sahai said. "That is why we have proposed to the government that at least for the MSMEs if some kind of freight subsidy is given it will help them. We are seeing its impact on low value high volume cargo and definitely this is something which is affecting the bottom lines of lot of companies,” he added.
OECD retains India’s FY24 GDP growth at 5.5% PARIS: The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday retained the outlook for India’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at 5.5% in FY24, lower than 8.1% in 2022-23. In its Economic Outlook for Southeast Asia, China and India, the agency said that China’s economy is seen growing 5.1% in both 2022 and 2023. Driven by infrastructure spending and border reopenings, the GDP of emerging Asia - China, India and the 10 members of the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN)- is projected to grow 5.8% this year, following a 7.4% expansion in 2021 and a 0.8% contraction in 2020, it said, adding that the Ukraine war adds to inflation and supply chain risks facing an emerging Asia attempting to break out of the Covid-19 slump. “While we expect the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic to continue, the growth momentum remains fragile. Inflation, notably rising energy and food prices, and supply-chain disruptions present an ongoing risk to the
recovery,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said. “Governments in the region need to implement effective macroeconomic and structural policies to safeguard their economies, continue to improve citizen’s well-being and accelerate progress to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” Cormann added. One of the main obstacles to bondmarket development in India is limited investor base; insufficient liquidity in the secondary market, OECD noted.

India achieves ambitious export target of $400 bn for FY22 ahead of schedule PM congratulates farmers, weavers, MSMEs, manufacturers, exporters as India sets and achieves an ambi ous target of $400 Billion of goods exports NEW DELHI: India’s merchandise exports hit the ambitious target of $400 billion for FY22 nine days before the fiscal year is set to end, according to commerce ministr y data. Goods exports will exceed the $30-billion mark for a 12th straight month in March, according to official sources. This marks a smart recovery in exports, which had contracted almost 7% in FY21 from a year before to $292 billion, in the wake of the Covid outbreak. However, global demand for goods improved dramatically this fiscal following an industrial resurgence in advanced economies, brightening prospects of Indian exports. Of course, the Ukraine crisis has now posed risks for exporters, as global
supply chains remain tangled. H o w e v e r, i t h a s a l s o c r e a t e d opportunities for Indian suppliers of wheat (Russia and Ukraine are large exporters of the grain) and some other far m commodities in the export market. Importantly, merchandise exports had remained below par in the past decade, having fluctuated between $250 billion and $330 billion a year since FY11; the highest export of $330 billion was achieved in FY19. So, a sustained surge in exports for a few years will be crucial to India recapturing its lost market share, analysts have said. Earlier this month, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal had exuded confidence that outbound
shipments in the current fiscal could the target and might even touch $410 billion. The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has lauded the farmers, weavers, MSMEs, manufacturers, exporters as India has achieved the ambitious target of $400 Billion of goods exports 9 days ahead of schedule. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said; "India set an ambitious target of $400 Billion of goods exports & achieves this target for the first time ever. I congratulate our farmers, weavers, MSMEs, manufacturers, exporters for this success. This is a key milestone in our A a t m a n i r b h a r B h a r a t j o u r n e y. #LocalGoesGlobal”
FTAs should have review mechanism to ensure mid-way course correction: Parliamentary panel NEW DELHI: Free trade agreements being negotiated by India should include the provision of a review mechanism to ensure mid-way course correction in case asymmetries are noticed in trade with the partner country, a Parliamentary panel has recommended. The report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce also said that India needs to leverage the 'China Plus One Strategy' for becoming an alternative investment destination for major global companies. The growing preference of firms located in major economies of Europe and the US to shift from China to other manufacturing bases provides a window of opportunity for India's trade sector, which needs to be capitalised, it said. The committee has recommended that a policy measure to benefit from the strategy should be devised, which should incorporate steps to ensure a business-friendly environment and modern manufacturing infrastructure for the incoming investments. The government should endeavour
to pursue Free trade agreements (FTAs) or preferential trade pacts with nations that seek to invest in India under the strategy, the report said. "...the provisions of FTAs with partner countries should have an inherent review mechanism for ensuring mid-way course correction for any asymmetries in trade," it added. It also said that FTAs should be concluded expeditiously to reap trade benefits. Further, the panel called for the release of the forthcoming foreign trade policy (FTP) within the stipulated timeframe. On India's exports, it said that decline in the outbound shipments in any sector should be dealt with a firm hand. "The committee recommends that the department (of commerce) should identify the infirmities and opt for a more focused approach in increasing market access of the sectors that exhibit a downtrend in exports," it added.
On special economic zones (SEZs), the report said that imposition of minimum alter nate tax and the introduction of sunset clause would adversely affect the competitive advantages of SEZ units. "The committee recommends that the government should ensure the continuation of fiscal benefits and extension of a sunset clause to retain the competence of SEZ units," the report said, adding SEZs can be included under the ambit of Remissions of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme. It has expressed concerns over trimming export incentives like under the MEIS (merchandise export from India scheme). The panel suggested "the extension of benefits of RoDTEP scheme to the sectors of phar ma, organic and inorganic chemicals and iron and steel in order to retain their price competitiveness in global markets". It also called for early clearance of pending dues under MEIS and SEIS.
