A.P. Moller - Maersk to strengthen its Cold Chain Logistics footprint with a new Cold Store facility in Gujarat The 260,000 sq. . temperature-controlled facility at Mehsana will a ract over INR 113 crore investment and be used to store frozen processed food items Cont’d. from Pg. 4

Maersk’s new Cold Store facility will be constructed close to the customer’s manufacturing facility and will serve as the mother Cold Store facility. The 14,700-pallet position facility will be built at the Fanidhar Mega Food Park and will be one of India’s largest single-shed cold stores. The large facility will help the customer store all the cargo in a single facility instead of multiple smaller facilities before dispatch. Maersk’s existing integrated cold chain solution provided to the customer will continue to ensure that an unbroken cold chain logistics solution is provided to the customer as the cargo moves from the manufacturing facility. This includes landside transportation to the port by road and rail, coordination at the port, customs clearances and ocean transportation for all export cargo, making this investment a step towards a truly integrated and end-to-end logistics solution. Maersk also provides the customer with Captain Peter solution, a Remote Container Management system, that provides full visibility to the customer during cold chain transportation. It monitors temperature and other critical elements necessary to ensure the integrity of cold chain logistics at the fingertip of the customer. Kamlesh Karamchandani, Director – Sales & Marketing, HyFun Foods, said, “Food security and quality are our top-most priority for ultimate customer satisfaction. To be able to deliver on those, we were looking at redesigning our supply chain model in a way where an unbroken cold chain becomes the backbone of how we move our processed food.” He added, “Maersk’s single-window solution for the entire cold chain logistics strengthened by the brand new cold store facility simplifies supply chains for us.” The new cold store facility being built by Maersk will exclusively cater to HyFun Foods. The facility will boast of operational and sustainable excellence using Ammonia refrigeration, which is a natural gas with zero Global Warming Potential (GWP). The facility will also use high-efficiency compressors that operate with lower power consumption. PIR panels will be used at the cold store facility which are built for fire resistance and have lower thermal conductivity. The facility will be equipped with modern warehouse management systems that will ensure the most efficient inventory management. It also provides real-time visibility

to the customer on inventory developments in order to let the customer make informed decisions on inventory management. The facility will adhere to the highest safety standards as well such as a human-friendly staging area and a robust fire detection and firefighting system. Maersk will invest in solar energy to power the facility in a bid to ensure that the logistics solutions offered are in line with the decarbonising targets set up by the company for NetZero by 2040. Green Building requirements like rain harvesting, STP, and zero discharge are also a part of the construction and operations plan. The facility will be built with world class design and engineering parameters adhering to all the compliance and quality requirements.

APM Terminals : New online portal streamlines hazardous documentation management for Shipping Lines THE HAGUE: APM Ter minals has designed a new online portal to simplify the process of managing hazardous cargo documentation for shipping lines. The first iteration of the new global tool reduces the number of steps needed to complete the important safety task. Auto-completion and drop down fields with standard IMDG terminology add clarity, speed, and reduce the risk of errors. Known as the Hazardous Documentation Vault (HazDV), it streamlines the documentation process and contributes to data management as well as safety standards. Approximately 60 million TEU containers are shipped around the globe each year, of which around six million contain hazardous cargo. Such cargo poses an increased risk of severe incidents if not handled correctly - including items containing lithium-ion (rechargeable) batteries – the number of which has sharply increased in recent years. 55% hazardous goods non-compliant A study by the National Cargo Bureau carried out together with Maersk, Hapag Lloyd and MSC found that 55% of inspected containers were non-compliant, 43% of containers failed due to poorly secured dangerous goods and 6.5% were found to be carrying goods that had been misdeclared by the cargo owner. This is often caused by a lack of knowledge of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. APM Terminals’ HazDV carries out a number of logic checks to ensure that the correct IMDG codes have been applied, so mistakes in documentation are identified. Information provided about hazardous cargo to our

Ports and Terminals is essential for our Health, Safety and Resilience teams to prepare for emergencies, yard planning/segregation, cross c h e c k i n g i n o u r Te r m i n a l Operating System or Export Arrival Lists. In addition, the information is used to ensure compliance with local regulations, (for example, certain categories that must remain in the terminal only for a limited period). The HazDV speeds up and simplifies this information flow. Terminal delays Mis-declarations can have a significant impact on Terminal Operations and ultimately customers supply chains, such as truck delays due to issues during the gate-in process. Incorrect declarations also increase the risk of accidents in the terminal yard due to unsafe storage practices, and the increased potential for accidents involving carriers due to unsafe stowage. APM Terminals’ HazDV has already been rolled out at the company’s US terminals in Port Elizabeth, Mobile, and Miami. As with other APM Terminals global digital solutions, it can be quickly rolled out to other Ports and Terminals – with plans for four further terminals in the coming months. One Global platform This recent implementation means 388 shipping line users across the three terminals can securely declare hazardous containers via www.apmterminals.com 24/7. Customers can use their existing single APM Terminals login, which is also used for Terminal Alerts, Shipping Line Dashboard and other global solutions.

E-platform for exporters in 2-3 months: DGFT NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry has started work on an online platform that will facilitate aspiring exporters through guidance and hand- holding in all aspects of trade and it will be made operational in the next three months, Director General of Foreign Trade Santosh Kumar Sarangi said recently. The Trade Connect e-Platform will provide tutorials on how to start exporting by providing information of products in demand, markets which where the demand for their products is, buyer events relevant to them and paperwork required to register as a exporter. Apart from the market information, the platform will also

have information regarding regulatory matters, export benefits available, tariffs in different countries and opportunities in countries with w h i c h I n d i a h a s F r e e Tr a d e Agreements (FTAs). The portal will also have information on non-tariff barriers in different countries and ways to negotiate them. The portal would also be relevant to importers with information on import and other tariffs and quality standards that the products need to confirm to. The portal will be supported by a help desk to address the queries of potential exporters. In the second phase the portal will also try to meet the requirements of exporters like

credit and insurance. The portal will also act as a window to explore opportunities through ecommerce and leads generated by Indian missions. It will be a single, direct intermediary platform between exporters and various government’s trade related entities including Indian missions abroad. It will also provide authentic source to buyers to validate Indian exporter profile. The platform will enable exporters to report and address trade disputes and barriers in export markets. India needs more Containers in Coastal Shipping to avoid repositioning charges As freight charges are on the rise, FIEO has recommended for supply of more shipping containers on the coastal routes to avoid reposi oning charges. NEW DELHI: An increase in the Drewry Freight Index indicates towards an increase in freight costs, opines Dr. Ajay Sahai, the DG and CEO of t h e Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n Exporters Organization (FIEO). He pointed at the necessity for supply of more shipping containers on the coastal routes to avoid repositioning charges. While manufacturing of shipping containers is in progress in a major way at Bhavnagar, Gujarat, by many private companies, Sahai urged for meeting the demand for backward integration and local production of corrugated steel used in

containers—a component not currently produced in India. Dr. Sahai noted that the effect of the Red Sea crisis on insurance costs is not significant until shipments reach importers. Although few insurers in India offer cargo insurance, but the role of ECGC becomes significant when global liquidity comes down. Highlighting that major companies like IKEA and Walmart have pre-negotiated and discounted contracts with shipping companies, he pointed out that shipping companies often recover losses from smaller exporters and suppliers when there’s a nomination involved. In opposition to the current losses borne by Indian exporters, he

recommended tax concessions to attract global shipping lines to India by incentivising the registration of shipping vessels under the Indian flag. Sahai drew attention to China’s artificial lowering of product prices in areas where India has implemented PLI schemes. He advocated for an increase in Rupee trade, citing instances where Rupee payments have commenced in trade with R u s s i a , UA E , a n d S r i L a n k a . Stressing the importance of facilitating the supply of goods to India in Rupees and encouraging the use of available Rupees among global traders, he mentioned that some global suppliers of sunflower oil have agreed to trade in Rupees.

India-Peru trade pact: Next round of negotiations to begin on Feb 12 NEW DELHI: The next round of negotiations between India and South American nation Peru for a free trade agreement is scheduled to start on February 12, an official said. The proposed agreement is aimed at promoting bilateral trade and investments between the two countries. In such pacts, two trading partners either significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them, besides easing norms to promote trade in ser vices. “The sixth round of negotiations for

a proposed trade agreement between India and the South American nation Peru is scheduled from February 12-15,” the official said. Issues which are expected to figure in the negotiations include r ules of origin, trade in goods, customs procedures and trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phytosanitary measures. Negotiations for the agreement started in 2017 and the fifth round was concluded in August 2019. The negotiations were paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. During 2022-23, the bilateral trade

between India and Peru stood at USD 3.12 billion. India exported goods worth USD 865.91 million to Per u and imported goods valued at USD 2.25 billion. Key Indian exports to Peru include motor vehicles/cars, cotton yarn and pharmaceuticals, while imports items include gold, copper ores and concentrates. Peruvian businesses are also looking to export agricultural products like avocados, fresh grapes and blueberries, and natural resources like calcium phosphates to India.

Red Sea attacks already bigger issue for supply chain than pandemic, maritime advisory warns LONDON: A leading ocean supply chain advisory firm is warning that the disruptions to shipping from the Houthi rebel attacks in the Red Sea are already more damaging to the supply chain impact than the early Covid-19 pandemic. Sea-Intelligence analyzed current vessel delays compared to delays over the last several years in a report for clients. The data shows that the longer transit around the Cape of Good Hope as ships divert from the Red Sea is already having a more significant impact on vessels available to pick up containers at ports than during the pandemic. This supply chain measure is known in the industry as “vessel capacity.” The vessel capacity drop is the second largest in recent years, according to Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence. The only single event with a bigger impact than the Red Sea crisis was the “Ever Given,” the giant cargo ship which got stuck in the Suez Canal for six days during March 2021. Billions in trade were at a standstill during that event. With that exception, “This [the Red Sea crisis] is the largest single event – even larger than the early pandemic impact,” Murphy said. Sea-Intelligence marked two phases of the pandemic. The first phase impacted Chinese ports due to Covic-19 travel, trucking and manufacturing restrictions, and the second phase incorporated the global spread of the pandemic. A key difference between the pandemic period and now is vessel capacity that could be brought back online. Traditionally, during the period of the year that includes February’s Chinese New Year, vessel capacity declines due to a decrease in container demand. That’s because ocean carriers bring in containers early, starting the previous October, ahead of the manufacturing plants closing in honor of the holidays. Murphy said the maritime industry today has new vessels available for work, whereas during the pandemic, all vessels were being used and demand was at historic highs. During the worst of the Covid supply chain snafus, there was not

enough vessel space to accommodate containers which snowballed into a massive container slowdown. Sea-Intelligence, along with other maritime officials, estimate there is approximately 10% of the world’s fleet currently not in service. If additional vessels were deployed, it could correct the imbalance in vessel availability and increase certainty in vessel schedules. “To go around the Cape of Good Hope, ocean carriers need one or two additional vessels to offset the delays,” Murphy said. “Ocean carriers are going to need to add vessels.” He anticipates ocean carriers adding vessels into their rotation after the Chinese New Year. “It’s in everybody’s interest to have a Suez solution,” Murphy said. Supply chain capacity had been in excess after the Covid boom waned and the freight industry had entered a significant recession, with potential for the Red Sea to reverse that. The amount of vessels added to pick up the slack depends on demand. MSC, the world’s largest ocean carrier, recently announced it was canceling vessels as a result of a decrease in demand for Chinese goods. The delays in the ar rival of containers are impacting some companies’ supply chains. Tesla, Volvo, and Michelin have recently said they have had to halt manufacturing. Ikea has warned of delays of product, as well as British retailer Next and Crocs. “Threats to Red Sea shipping are a threat to maritime commerce worldwide,” said Steve Lamar, CEO of the American Apparel and Footwear Association. “Delays and cost increases are mounting. Although companies are exploring alternative shipping options, adverse knock-on effects continuing to disrupt logistics globally. More needs to be done to ensure the safety of crews and security of cargo by eliminating existing or future threats entirely.” Adding vessels to the flow of trade could help with a potential container cr unch that has many logistics managers worried. When vessels are late, the containers on those vessels

will be late to be processed and reused again for exports. This will delay exports from Europe to the United States as well as from Asia to the United States and the world. Logistics CEOs have been warning CNBC that the vessel re-routings would result in container crunches for weeks. The diversions away from the Red Sea are also beginning to have a bigger impact on energy markets and product tanker operators. Bendik Folden Nyttingnes, a Shipping Analyst at Clarksons Securities, recently said that the longer transit times around the Cape of Good Hope could create a supply shortage of tankers. Shell this week confirmed it was suspending shipments through the Red Sea, a move BP had already made. According to data from supply chain intelligence firm Kpler, there have been 25 LNG vessel diversions from Red Sea to Cape of Good Hope since December 15, with 11 of these diversions taking place since Jan 15. This includes at least four vessels heading from Qatar to Europe. There are currently no LNG vessels within the Red Sea.NYK K Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Reliance, ADNOC, Torm, Hafnia, Stena Bulk, Hafnia, BP, Frontline, Equinor, and Euronav are reportedly among the tanker operators and energy companies choosing to avoid the area following recent warnings. Companies including Tom, Hafnia, Scorpio Tankers, and Ardmore would benefit if product tanker rates rose, according to Nyttingnes. “We are finally starting to see an impact in product tanker rates after a period of decline in transits through the Red Sea,” he said. “Several routes out of the Middle East Gulf are showing double-digit gains today.” He added that the company is now seeing vessels that were once waiting outside of the Gulf of Aden to start sailing South. “It is likely that these (vessels) have been waiting for a suitable time to transit the Red Sea and the fact that they are now turning away could be a sign that some market participants are losing faith in a quick solution to the Houthi attacks,” he said.

India’s forex reserves jump $1.63 bn to $618.9 bn MUMBAI: India’s forex reserves jumped USD 1.634 billion to USD 618.937 billion for the week ended January 12, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said. In the previous reporting week, the overall reser ves had declined sharply by USD 5.89 billion to USD 617.3 billion.

The country’s forex kitty had reached an all-time high of USD 645 billion in October 2021. The reserves took a hit as the central bank deployed the kitty to defend the rupee amid pressures caused majorly by global developments since last year. For the week ended January 12,

the foreign currency assets — a major component of the reser ves — increased USD 1.859 billion to USD 548.508 billion, the data said. India’s reserve position with the IMF increased USD 6 million to USD 4.872 billion in the reporting week, the RBI data added.

EDFC is ready to transform the landscape of freight transportation NEW DELHI: The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) is all set to transform the landscape of freight transportation in the country. A successful trial on the New Pilkhani-New Shambhu section of the corridor has taken place, informed Ministry of Railways, recently. “With the successful trial on the New Pilkhani-New Shambhu section of Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), commercial freight train operations begin on the Pilkhani-Sahnewal section,” said the Ministry on social media platform X. The ministry also shared a 20second video clip of the freight train passing the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor. At the time of

writing this article, the brief footage garnered 37k views. Interestingly, recently, during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (2024), Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi mentioned about the EDFC and said that regions like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Eastern Coast Line are being linked via dedicated freight corridors. “Be it Gujarat, Maharashtra, or our Eastern Coast Line, today they are being connected through dedicated freight corridors,” PM Modi had said. In the country, the dedicated freight corridors are a network of broad gauge freight railway lines that exclusively serve freight trains.

These will make the freight service in the country swifter and more efficient. Presently, the Government is concentrating on two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs): a) Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) – Ludhiana to Sonnagar. Its length is 1337 km. b) Western Dedicated Freight Cor ridor (WDFC) – Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri. Its length is 1506 km. Status of corridors The construction of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor is over. Construction work on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is going on. 1176 km out of 1506 km is done.

Cranes to be installed at Vizhinjam Port by April THIRUVANANTHPURAM: As part of the efforts to begin trial operations for the Phase I of Vizhinjam International Seaport by April this year, the port authorities started the process of installing cranes to load, offload containers and to shift them to the yards. As many as 11 yard cranes and four ship-to-shore cranes have to be installed. “The installation started a few days back and it will take a month more.Nine cranes have been installed now and using empty containers their

operations are being examined now,” said an official of the port. There are several steps prior to the commissioning of the cranes before the first ship carrying containers dock the port in a couple of months. “The installation work is done by the India unit of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC). The position of the cranes is crucial in determining the efficacy of the cranes as their functioning has to be examined using several parameters,” added the official. The port is expected to attract

around 50 percent of the ships passing through the international channel and it will become a transhipment hub. It will also open a sea of opportunities in various sectors and will also provide direct job for around 5,000 people in the beginning and lots more will benefit through indirect businesses associated with the port. The port is unique with several special features such as its depth of over 20 metres and its proximity to the international shipping channel. The port is only 11 nautical miles away from the channel.

Pandu Port in Guwahati to be ready soon GUWAHATI: The construction work at the port is progressing at its full pace. The road being developed to connect Pandu Port will be directly linked to the National Highway outside the city, to ensure the traffic of Guwahati city is not affected by heavy vehicles plying to move exim goods unloading from the port. As per A. Selva Kumar, Director of

I n l a n d Wa t e r w a y s Au t h o r i t y, the project construction cost is Rs 150 crore and will be done in 2 phases. At present, about 30% of the work has been completed, while the remaining will be completed by the end of this year. Besides this, a ship repairing and maintenance services centre is also being developed in Guwahati by the

Inland Waterways Authority. The repair facility will be used by all small and big ships coming to the Brahmaputra. This will save a lot of cost for shipowners who currently travel for longer distances for repair purposes. With this facility, the inconvenience and expense of taking North-Eastern ships to Kolkata Port for repairs can be avoided.
