India and Malaysia upgrade strategic partnership, discuss BRICS membership

NEW

DELHI: India and Malaysia

d e c i d e d t o u p g r a d e t i e s t o a ‘ C o m p r e h e n s i v e S t r a t e g i c Partnership’, during talks between Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as part of a visit aimed at moving beyond several years of tensions over a number of issues.

The two leaders announced the decision to upgrade the 2010 Strategic Partnership, that had been made an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’ in 2015, along with a number of agreements and MoUs signed in their presence , including on workers’ mobility, digital technology, culture, tourism, sports, and education. India will also work with Malaysia on its request to join the BRICS grouping that Mr. Ibrahim has been pushing for, officials said. The two P rime

Ministers also discussed geopolitical challenges, including the current conflicts and tensions in the IndoPacific region.

As PM Modi hosted his counterpart Anwar Ibrahim here, and Malaysia

s i g n e d a M e m o r a n d u m o f Understanding on Recruitment, Employment, and Repatriation of workers The MoU is likely to streamline the movement of workers from India to Malaysia Both governments had concerns over illegal migrationandhumantrafficking

“We have decided today that our partnership will be elevated to a C o m p r e h e n s i v e S t r a t e g i c Partnership,” PM Modi said after the m e e t i n g w i t h h i s M a l a y s i a n counterpart. “We observed that our bilateral trade is making steady progress. Trade between India and

Malaysia can now be settled in Indian Rupee and Malaysian Ringgits.”

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia aims to diversify its economic diplomacy efforts by p a r t i c i p a t i n g i n t h e intergovernmental organisation Brics and enhance its collaboration with member countries through shared initiatives and strategic partnerships.

Malaysia has applied to join Brics, a grouping of large emerging economies that was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for emerging economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining the group in 2010. In January 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab E m i r a t e s ( U A E ) j o i n e d t h e organisation as new members.

India’s rst Multi Modal Logistics Park in Assam in advanced stage

JOGIGHOPA: The country’s first Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Jogighopa in Assam is in an advanced stage of construction and is set to be operational by next year if everything goes according to plan

The Government of India had planned to set up 35 such MMLPs across the country, and work on the one at Jogighopa in lower Assam was the first to be sanctioned. The project is wholly funded by the Government of India and is being executed by N a t i o n a l H i g h w a y s a n d I n f r a s t r u c t u r e D e v e l o p m e n t Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL).

MMLPs shall serve as regional cargo aggregation and distribution hubs for various industrial and agricultural nodes, consumer hubs, and EXIM gateways such as seaports with multi-modal connectivity. In certain cases, the MMLPs are

also being developed in tandem with the Inland Waterway Terminals under the Sagarmala Pariyojana to further reduce the cost of inland cargo movement on a much larger scale as compared to conventional road-based movement.

This MMLP will serve as the distribution centre for all NorthEastern States and facilitate crossborder trade with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal.

Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) published its annual report for 2023–24, where t

mentioned.

The report said that the execution of enabling development work, including road, rail, and water connectivity, area development such as site levelling, boundary work, internal roads, administrative

buildings, sewage treatment plant, waste treatment plant, etc., is in an advanced stage.

The procurement of developers on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis for the construction of logistics facilities such as business centre, container yard, warehouses, cold storage, etc. and the subsequent operations thereof is in process.

O f t h e 3 5 M M L P p r o j e c t s identified for development under Bharatmala Pariyojana, 15 sites have been prioritized for award by FY 2024–25. So far, six MMLPs have been awarded for Jogighopa, Chennai, Indore, Bengaluru, Nagpur, and Jalna. 7 MMLPs are planned for s

2 4 – 2 5 ( A n a n t a p u r, P u n e , P a t n a , Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Jammu, and Nashik), out of which bids have been invited for MMLPs at Anantapur, Pune, and Nashik.

Government plans new financial incentives to expand cargo shipping on Inland Waterways

NEW DELHI: In a bid to push the use of the country’s inland waterways network, the Indian government plans to provide financial support for the movement of goods via rivers and backwaters, according to sources.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to encourage greater use of these waterways for cargo transport.

The plan includes an initial scheme that offers up to a 35 per cent discount on transportation invoices.

This discount will be provided by a subsidiary of the state-run Shipping Corporation of India, with the government covering the revenue loss incurred by the company

“This scheme has been designed after feedback from stakeholders that recently used national waterways 1, 2 and 16 to transport goods,” one of the officials said.

The incentive will make waterway m o v e m e n t o n t h o s e r o u t e s comparable to road transport ,” an official stated, as per the report.

The first phase will focus on inland w

Brahmaputra, and Barak rivers.

C u r r e n t l y, I n d i a h a s 1 1 1 designated national waterways stretching over 22,000 km across 24 states.

Officials estimate that this mode offers the lowest freight costs compared to rail and road transport and is also cleaner However, the costs a

d unloading vessels remain a challenge to the mode’s viability

National Waterway 1 (NW1) is the longest, stretching 1,620 km through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal along

Hooghly rivers.

National Waterway 2 (NW2) is the second longest, covering 891 km on the Brahmaputra River

Utilising these waterways for cargo movement is also expected to ease congestion on rail and road networks.

In October of the previous year, the government also announced a Rs 715,200 crore investment plan to improve cargo transport on inland waterways, aiming to increase cargo volume by 400 per cent to 500 million tonnes annually by 2047.

Additionally, a Rs 12,000 crore project on the Brahmani River in Odisha (NW5) is being prepared to facilitate the transport of goods from four industrial clusters to the Paradip and Dhamra ports.

Indian GDP can hit $55 trillion by 2047 at 8% growth: IMF

NEW DELHI: India has the potential to grow into a $55 trillion economy by 2047 if both state and central governments enact policies to elevate the nation’s growth rate from its historical average of seven per cent to eight per cent (in rupee terms), according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Krishnamurthy V Subramanian, Executive Director of the IMF, said with consistent eight per cent growth, the power of compounding could propel India to a $55 trillion economy, adding that while the goal may seem ambitious, it is achievable.

A d d r e s s i n g a n e v e n t i n Hyderabad, the IMF Executive

pointed out that in 2020, India’s private credit to GDP ratio was 58 per cent, significantly lower than the 200 per cent seen in advanced economies.

H o w e v e r, h e h i g h l i g h t e d t h e significant progress in financial inclusion through several initiatives.

Subramanian’s upbeat growth projections came as Dr Gita Gopinath, the IMF deputy managing director said thatsheishopefulofIndiabecomingthe third-largesteconomyby2027

Speaking to the media, Gopinath said India’s growth did much better than expected during the last fiscal year and that those carryover effects are affecting our forecast for this year.

“The other factor is we see private

consumption recovering,” she said. Her remarks come after the IMF, in its ‘World Economic Outlook’ report, increased India’s growth projection for the financial year 202425 to seven per cent The revised growth projection was based on new data for FMCG and two-wheeler sales a n d a f a v o u r a b l e m o n s o o n . Interestingly, this projection is more bullish than the 6.5 per cent projection of the Union government in the economic survey.

India on an average grew 6 6 per cent a year in the decade starting 2010, but the employment growth rate was below 2.0 per cent, which was belowitsG20peers,shepointedout.

India’s oilmeals export down by 2.3% in April-July

CHENNAI: India exported 15.54 lakh tonnes (lt) of oilmeals during April-July of 2023-24 against 15.91 lt in the year-ago period, registering a decline of 2.32 per cent.

BV Mehta, Executive Director of Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), attributed this decline to the reduction in export of rapeseed meal and castorseed meal. Added to this, there was no export of de-oiled ricebran since September 2023 due to a ban on its export.

Ban on ricebran exports

Stating the Government has

decided to extend export prohibition of de-oiled ricebran till January 31, 2025, he said this will seriously affect West Bengal’s solvent extraction units processing ricebran.

E x p o r t o f s o y a b e a n m e a l jumped to 6.92 lt in the first four months of 2023-24 from 4.20 lt in the c o r r e s p o n d i n g p e r i o d o f t h e previous fiscal, recording a growth of 64 45 per cent He attributed this growth to the increase in export of countries such as Iran and France d u r i n g t h

soyabean meal export to Iran and

France stood at 1 14 lt and 54,481 tonnes during the period

India exported 7.58 lt of rapeseed meal during April- July 2023-24 against 8 94 lt in April- July of 2022-23 Bangladesh is one of the major importers of rapeseed meal. The current crisis in Bangladesh may affect, at least temporarily, halting export of rapeseed meal, mainly exported by road or rail rakes, he said.

South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Bangladesh are the major importers of oilmeals from India.
