Second Ro-Ro service set to commence soon in Gujarat • Given all permissions & obtained all Regulatory Approvals : Shri SK Mehta • Adani will operate the cargo vessel in a joint venture with a private ferry operator: Sources GANDHIDHAM: Gujarat’s second Ro-Ro ferry service connecting India’s biggest private port Mundra and Vadinar is all set to commence next month. The sea route of 53 km is expected to give major fillip to some of the major industries like ceramics in Morbi, brass parts in Jamnagar and engineering goods in Rajkot. Highly placed sources confirmed that, the cargo vessel to be operated by Adani Group has got most of the clearances to start the service. Vadinar is owned by Government-run Deendayal Port Trust (DPT), which passed a proposal in its board meeting held last month to allow Adani Logistics Ltd to use Ro-Ro jetty at Vadinar for commencing this service. Sources says that Adani will operate the cargo vessel in a joint venture with a private ferry operator.

Shri SK Mehta, Chairman of DPT, said, “We have given all the permissions and obtained all regulatory approvals too. Mundra and Vadinar both have cargo jetties. We expect to commence the service by the end of this month or beginning of next month.” Cont’d. Pg. 6

Government launches National Logistics Excellence Awards We aim to turn spotlight on logis cs service providers who a ains opera onal excellence, adopted digi sa on: Special Secretary, Logis cs Division NEW INDIA: With a view to turn the spotlight on the logistics sector, the Government has recently announced the launch of National Logistics Excellence Awards. The framework of awards has been finalised in consultation with the logistics associations and forum user industry partners. The awards are in two categories, the first group includes logistics infrastructure/service providers and second one is for various user industries. There was wide scale appreciation from user industries for giving the due recognition to various players involved in the logistics supply chain. The awards will highlight best practices including

consolidation, process standardisation, technological upgrade, digital transformations, and sustainable practices. “Through these awards we aim to turn the spotlight on logistics service providers who have attained operational excellence, adopted digitisation and technology, improved customer service and pursued sustainable practices, among other achievements,” said Mr. Pawan Agarwal, Special Secretary, Logistics Division. He further added that “For user industries, the awards will showcase efforts towards supply chain transformation, supplier ecosystem development, skill development, automation, and other similar endeavours”. Cont’d. Pg. 19

Adani offers discount for LNG-fuelled vessels at Mundra Port AHMEDABAD: The Adani Group will offer a 50% discount on charges to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled ships at Mundra, India’s largest commercial port, according to a report by Reuters, as the country seeks to cut emissions under its green ports plan. Using LNG to fuel ships allows a significant reduction in CO2 as well as of other forms of pollution compared with conventional shipping fuel.

“Port will offer 50% discount on Port Dues, Pilotage and Berth hire charges,” the notice to shippers, issued by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd (APSE.NS), said. The company, controlled by billionaire Gautam Adani, said the waiver scheme will apply to vessels with dual fuel engines that use LNG as a primary fuel. The scheme will be valid for six months from Aug. 1. However, the waiver on port charges would not apply for vessels carrying LNG cargo and using LNG fuel, it said.

India rises in Ease of Cross-Border Trade : UN Survey on Digital Trade Facilitation NEW YORK: India has made noticeable progress in ease of cross-border trade, a UN survey that tracked 143 economies on key trade facilitation parameters over a two-year period said. As per the latest UN Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation, India’s rank moved up from 78.49% in 2019 to 90.32% in 2021. The bi-annual survey exclusively deals with trade facilitation measures taken by individual countries.

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said that the UN survey result was a remarkable improvement in India’s ranking on ‘digital and sustainable trade facilitation.’ CBIC said that the results showed India was among the best performing country in South and south West Asia region and in the Asia Pacific region. India’s overall score has also been found to be higher than many of the OECD countries and Cont’d. Pg. 19 the average of EU, it said.

Second Ro-Ro service set to commence soon in Gujarat • Given all permissions & obtained all Regulatory Approvals : Shri SK Mehta • Adani will operate the cargo vessel in a joint venture with a private ferry operator: Sources Cont’d. from Pg. 4 One pending approval from Directorate General of Shipping is also expected in the next few days, sources said. The Ro-Ro vessel will have a capacity to car r y 24 tr ucks. The export cargo from ceramic, engineering, brass, chemical and detergent and import scrap for engineering and brass industry will be benefited in a big way. According to a rough estimate, over 500 trucks ply to and fro from Mundra, Morbi, Rajkot and Jamnagar every day. The cargo imported at Mundra port has to travel 270 km to reach

Jamnagar, but if loaded in a Ro-Ro vessel and unloaded at Vadinar, it will take just 53 km to reach Jamnagar. In the same way, the distance of 250 km between Rajkot and Mundra will be reduced to just 140 km from Vadinar. The Ro-Ro service will help reduce traffic on the road, vehicular pollution and provide cost effectiveness. However Aashish Joshi, Managing Committee member of Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) said, “We are still not clear about how cost effective the service will prove to be. Morbi is in the center and they may prefer to handle cargo by road because Vadinar-Morbi distance is again 150 km.”

All efforts being made to complete Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project expeditiously: Nitin Gadkari NEW DELHI: Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said all efforts are being made to complete the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project expeditiously. Informing Rajya Sabha, Gadkari said, out of total length of the project, 350 km has already been constructed and works for construction of 825 km is in progress. Gadkari said bids for remaining 163 kms length have been received/ invited and these balance works are likely to be awarded in the current financial year. “Out of the total length of DelhiMumbai Expressway, 350 km has already been constructed and works for constr uction of 825 km is in

progress,” he said. The target date for completion of the complete corridor of Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is January 2023. “In ongoing packages, there are certain slippages on account of the ongoing COVID pandemic. All efforts are being made to complete the project expeditiously,” Gadkari noted. Replying to a separate question, he said at present, implementation of 7 expressways having length of 2,507 km has been taken up. “Out of 2,507 kms, 440 km has been completed,” Gadkari said, adding that the ministry has issued detailed guidelines dated June 3, 2020 for providing relief

due to the COVID pandemic. He said the road transport and highways ministry has issued guidelines for mandatory use of waste plastic in periodic renewal coat of pavement on National Highways and also in wearing course of service roads within 50 km periphery of urban areas having population of 5 lakhs or more. To a separate question, Gadkari said at present, 701 fee plazas on National Highways and 149 fee plazas on State Highways are enabled with Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) infrastructure. “As on July 11, 2021, a cumulative amount of Rs 52,386.58 crore has been collected through FASTag,” he said.

Spices exports top $3.5 billion; Chilli, Turmeric, Ginger, Cardamom shipments gains CHENNAI: Chilli continued to be the most sought after in the spices export basket, enabling India’s spices shipments to top the $3.5 billion mark in total exports during 2020-21 fiscal. In 2019-20, the figure was $3.03 billion. China has emerged as the No: 1 export destination for Indian spices over for the last two fiscal, surpassing the US. Sources in the spices export industry said that the dragon nation accounts for a majority of Indian chilli exports as well. However, the latest export figure of China’s import of Indian chillies is not available as of now, but that country had shipped around 1.4 lakh tonnes in FY 20 from a meagre 10,000 tonnnes in FY 18, the sources said. An industry expert said that China does not grow red chillies similar to Indian varieties and the varietiessuch as Teja, Sannam, Bydagi are available only in India. Proper blending of these varieties makes it possible to prepare the right compositions for various markets. Indian chilli exporters can export to China with ease. Besides, the

reduction of chilli procurement by China from the strife-torn Syria, Turkey and Iran has also boosted the demand for Indian chilies. Major exporting companies are advocating Integrated Pest Management Practices through backward linkages using good agricultural practices. This gives buyers confidence to import genuine chillies. Demand from Africa, South Asia and West Asia is expected to rise, export industry sources said. Spices Board figures said that the exports continued to witness an upward trend in FY 21, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The estimated export of spices and spices products from 2020-21 is 15,65,000 tonnes, valued Rs. 27,193.20 crore, against 12,08,400 tonnes, valued Rs. 22,062.80 crore, the previous fiscal. Total chilli exports in 202-21 were 6,01,500 tonnes valued at Rs. 8,430 crore, up 21 per cent in quantity and 26 per cent in value. Last year, it was 2,64,500 tonnes worth Rs. 3,605 crore. Besides, chilli, other spices that have witnessed a major increase in

e x p o r t s w e r e t u r m e r i c , g i n g e r, cardamom and spice seeds such as cumin, fenugreek. Some of this increase in consumption is due to the fact that a number of spices have immunity booster properties which will help in fighting the pandemic, the official sources said. Cumin was the second-most exported spice, recording an increase of 40 per cent in volume and 26 per cent in value. A total of 2,99,000 tonnes of cumin valued at Rs. 4,253 crore was exported. Turmeric export was 1,83,000 tonnes in volume for a value of Rs. 1,675 crore, while ginger stood at 1,25,000 tonnes on a value of Rs. 756 crore. Mint products shipments touched 27,400 tonnes in quantity for a value of Rs. 3,668 crore, while spice and oleoresins stood at 16,450 tonnes valued at Rs. 3,306 crore. The Spices Board is on a mission to promote Indian brands in the overseas markets by coordinating with Indian Embassies through various promotion campaigns, industry sources added.

Landlocked Nepal mulls using Dhamra Port in Odisha K AT H M A N D U : I m p r o v i n g connectivity will be the focus for India and the landlocked Nepal, which needs to access ports to boost its trade activities. Koirala added that it cannot be business as usual for the two countries. “Governments must abandon business as usual attitude, instead give priority to crafting a set of policies that are based on a fresh set of ideas, bearing in mind that a sound economic recovery for Nepal would no doubt revolve around a practical and efficient conjoining of selfsufficiency (by boosting domestic production and consumption) with robust engagement to the external environment,” he said. The South Asian nations are also looking to operationalise the muchawaited Bangladesh-Bhutan India

N e p a l ( B B I N ) M o t o r Ve h i c l e s Agreement (MVA) project, aimed at boosting connectivity in the region. Experts have noted that the BBIN project would be critical for economic recovery in the region. Nepal is also dependent heavily on India for access to ports though Kathmandu has also been granted access to Chinese ports now. India accounts for 64 per cent of Kathmandu’s overall trade volume. At present, a chunk of Nepal’s trade — both imports and exports — are routed through the Haldia and Vishakhapatnam ports. However, sources said that India could open up more ports for Nepal. The country could even be granted access to the deep water Sittwe port. The Sittwe port is currently being

developed by India in Myanmar ’s northern Rakhine province. The port, at the mouth of the Kaladan river, is being developed as part of the Kaladan MultiModal Transit Transport Project. Sources also said that a mechanism needs to be put in pace to ensure overall better logistics and which would save time and for movement of goods between Nepal and the Indian ports. According to the Economic Times India has agreed to provide Nepal access to Dhamra port in Odisha and Mundra in Gujarat. The two countries have been negotiating to facilitate trade through inland waterways from Haldia to Nepal through rivers Koshi and Gandak. While China has given access to Nepal to use its ports, negotiations for the same took time and were laced with hiccups.

Government launches National Logistics Excellence Awards We aim to turn spotlight on logis cs service providers who a ains opera onal excellence, adopted digi sa on: Special Secretary, Logis cs Division Cont’d. from Pg. 4 The awards will also be an opportunity to laud the extraordinary measures organisations have taken to address the deficiencies exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic including last-mile delivery start-ups, development of cold storage facilities, effective transportation of oxygen, and uninterrupted supply of essential goods and services to the needy. While the Indian logistics sector has been growing at a CAGR of 10.5%, reaching approximately USD 215 billion in value in 2020, there are systemic, interconnected problems that must be addressed to enhance its efficiency. Comprehensive logistics costs amount to almost 14% of India’s GDP. Closing India’s competitiveness gap vis-à-vis the

global average of 8 percent, would make the Indian logistics sector advanced, organised and efficient, on par with global peers with the ambition of being amongst the top 25 countries in the global Logistics Performance Index (LPI). The industry participants and officers from line ministries welcomed the initiative to recognise the logistics sector which is playing an important role in economic development. An important outcome of the event will be a library of case studies on best practices in logistics, showcased as a “Logistics Excellence Gallery ” under URL https://excellenceawardslogistics.gov.in hosted at the website of Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Logistics service providers and end-user industries doing exceptional work in the field of

logistics will be featured in the gallery. Organisations will be invited to submit entries via the ministry of commerce and industr y website. Shortlisted entrants will present their case to a National Jury panel, which will decide the winners. The panel will be chaired by the Special Secretary, Logistics Division, and will comprise senior representatives from line Ministries, Logistics and Supply chain experts from leading academic and research institutions, and CXO-level professionals from user-industries and service providers. The winners will be announced on 31 October 2021. All case studies by finalists in the National Jury round will be showcased in the Logistics Excellence Gallery.

India rises in Ease of Cross-Border Trade : UN Survey on Digital Trade Facilitation Cont’d. from Pg. 4 Among developed countries, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Japan and Belgium have scored more than 93%. In South Asia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were behind India with a score of 64.5% and 60.2%, the survey showed. The sur vey tracks 58 measures identified with trade facilitation such as facility for electronic submission of declarations and electronic payment of duties and fees and electronic application for refunds which are seen as global best practices. As per the 2021 survey report, India has scored 100% in transparency, 95.83% in formalities, 88.89% in institutional arrangement and cooperation: and 96.30% in paperless trade. The survey results comes as a boost to

policy makers in India trying to improve the country’s attractiveness as a business destination and to capture a larger pie in the global supply chain of goods and services. Boosting cross border trade is a key element of the post-pandemic economic recovery strategy of many nations. Since the beginning of the pandemic last year, New Delhi has implemented several measures to cut down procedures and the time taken for customs clearance. From 15 July, customs authorities put in place a host of measures to speed up assessment and clearance of shipments in a more anonymous way. This is expected to streamline the faceless assessment scheme rolled out last October and process shipments without direct interface with the merchant.

Simplifying cross-border trade has been a priority for the Narendra Modi administration as it is seen as a key determinant of the ease of doing business in the country. Also, officials are keen to reduce the logistics cost to boost the industry’s competitiveness in world markets. During the second wave of the pandemic, when there was an acute shortage of medical supplies, the authorities put in place a simplified regime for import of relief materials with a focus on quick customs clearance followed by paperwork to be done within a specified time frame. For checking smuggling and tax evasion, CBIC is increasingly relying on technology and data sourced from other regulators such as the income tax department.

Indian Steel Exporters set to gain as China mulls taxes on exports, feel Steel Analysts NEW DELHI: Indian steelmakers are likely to reap bumper profits if China imposes an export tax on its steel to cool domestic prices, analysts said. China’s steel exports rose 23% in June to 6.5 million tonnes (mt) from the preceding month (75% from a year ago) despite the removal of export rebates, according to the trade data released by the country. In May, China announced the abolition of rebates to discourage exports and cool prices, but the move hasn’t led to the desired impact. China’s domestic prices rebounded in July, with spot steel prices rising 7%. “As a result, we see higher risk from the Chinese government imposing a tax on steel exports to cool export, and domestic steel prices,” broking firm Motilal Oswal said in a recent note to clients. The export tax could raise regional steel prices due to tightened supply but will be positive for Indian steel companies. “A potential imposition of export duty on steel in China will make exports for Indian

steel players lucrative. Strong demand, domestically as well as globally, could support strong steel prices,” said an analyst with a foreign brokerage. China’s June steel consumption slowed to less than 1% from a year earlier for the first time since March 2020. A slump in consumption in China also pushed mills to export more. Despite higher exports, June crude steel production grew 2.5% from a year earlier, the slowest in the past year. “Given the Chinese Government’s objectives to control steel production and emissions as well as cool domestic steel prices, we believe higher exports raise the risk of the imposition of an export tax,” said Motilal Oswal in its report dated 15 July. Meanwhile, HRC (hot-rolled coil) price declined for a fifth straight week in India to Rs. 64,220 per tonne, primarily due to subdued demand. Analysts, however, do not see an import threat as local HRC price is 20–25% lower than the landed price of imports. So domestic steel producers

have again started tapping into export markets by lowering prices and increasing the proportion of semi-finished steel, according to analysts. Led by China and India, global steel production during the five months to 31 May recorded a growth of around 15% from a year earlier. In the past few quarters, Indian steelmakers have seen margins expand significantly, riding on the high export demand and supply shortage, leading many to attribute the rise in prices in steel along with other base metals to a commodity supercycle. According to Care Ratings, improving the supply-side situation is expected to ease any further increase in steel prices; however, it is unlikely that global prices may witness any steep correction from their peak levels. On the domestic front, with the second wave slowing down, demand for steel is expected to bounce back af ter the monsoon ends, driven by the infrastructure and construction sectors.

Global Shipping & labour shortages may get impacted due to slow Vaccine rollout for Seafarers : Experts LONDON: A slow rollout of COVID19 vaccinations for seafarers is proving problematic for the beleaguered shipping industry, according to experts. When outbreaks occur on ships it can endanger marine works and cause further disruption to trade, Bloomberg reported. Despite efforts to vaccinate seafarers in ports, most are still largely dependent on their home countries to be vaccinated — and more than half of the 1.6 million maritime workers globally come from developing countries such as India, the Philippines, or Indonesia, the outlet reported. ICS estimates only 35,000-40,000 seafarers are vaccinated — 2.5% of the global pool of maritime workers. “Supply chains are already stretched from a robust bounce back in consumer demand, semiconductor shortages, and shipping difficulties such as the Suez Canal blockage and Chinese port closures,” Tom Fairbairn, a shipping expert, told Insider. According to the WHO, more than 80% of global trade by volume is moved by maritime transport. The global

economy depends on the world’s two million seafarers who operate the global fleet of merchant ships. Illness and economic hardship remain a serious problem for these workers amid the pandemic. A new report by Thetius and sponsored by Inmarsat discussed the future of seafaring, as well as the current problems. It stated: “2020 showed the collective ineffectiveness of the entire shipping industry, including charities, corporates, unions, and even international bodies such as the IMO, to act as a voice for the needs of seafarers during a crisis.” It added: “Governments around the world have repeatedly failed to act on the crew change crisis, which still exists at the time of writing.” In May, a seafarer died and several medical workers in Indonesia were ill with the delta variant of COVID-19 after a ship with an infected Filipino crew docked in Central Java on April 25. Around the same time, the shipping industry endured more chaos after an outbreak at one of China’s busiest ports in the province of Guangdong triggered a

backlog of shipments at four major ports. Situations like this are worsening the existing worldwide shipping crisis, which has raised costs and led to shortages of many products, from chicken to semiconductors, as a result of the pandemic, Insider’s Rachel Premack reported. In an interview with Bloomberg, Esben Poulsson, chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), which acts for shipowners said: “With this new delta strain, there’s no doubt it’s setting us back and the situation is getting worse. Demand for products isn’t letting up, crew changes aren’t happening fast enough and governments continue to stick their heads in the sand.” The forecast growth in the world merchant fleet over the next decade, and its anticipated demand for seafarers, will likely continue the trend of a shortage in the supply of officers, according to the ICS. This is why Fairbairn warns: “Those down the supply chain must be prepared for further disruption in the critical run-up to Christmas.”

Make in India & PLI schemes will make India a Global manufacturing powerhouse: Industry Experts MUMBAI: Pursuant to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, Make in India and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) became fundamental stepping-stones to shaping India as an efficient, equitable and resilient manufacturing hub. Make in India aims to promote investment, encourage innovation, enhance skill development, protect intellectual property and create best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure in the country. The PLI scheme, as its name reflects, is meant to provide companies incentives on incremental sales from products manufactured in domestic units. “The Make in India campaign by the Government has given manufacturing an impetus and the investments made in infrastructure, healthcare, electronics,

amongst others, are already bearing fruit. This will help India being seen as one of the global manufacturing hubs producing world-class products,” says S Sunil Kumar, President, Henkel, India. The aim is to create a robust manufacturing sector by not only inviting foreign companies to set up operations in India but also enhance India’s exports and manufacturing capabilities for highquality, competitive products. In the Union Budget 2021-22, an outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore for the PLI Schemes for 13 key sectors was announced, to create national manufacturing champions and generate employment opportunities for the country ’s youth. This means that minimum production in India as a result of these Schemes is expected to be over US$ 500 billion in 5 years. Both these initiatives

also aim to improve India’s rank on the Ease of Doing Business index by eliminating unnecessar y laws and regulations, making bureaucratic p r o c e s s e s e a s i e r, a n d m a k i n g t h e government more transparent, responsive and accountable. According to Ashok Ramachandran, Chief Executive Ofcer and President, Schindler India, “There is also a ubiquitous evolution of nationalist feelings, consumer preference for locally produced products coupled with clear mandate from infrastructure development authorities to source from within India. Organizations with forward looking strategies, ones who are agile, have been able to leverage this opportunity by accelerating localization of the production base.”

Rail freight rebounds as COVID situation eases NEW DELHI: India’s revenue from rail freight jumped by more than 52% year on year in the quarter ended June to INR339.8bn ($4.55bn, £3.34bn) as economic activity recovered from COVID restrictions. The state carrier freighted 339.3 million tonnes of goods in the Juneended quarter, the first of its fiscal year, up 40.4% from the year-ago period. The total is 13.8% higher than the government target of 298 million tonnes transported for the quarter. The railways also improved efficiency during the period increasing

its per million ton freight by 8.7% year on year to INR1bn. Freight revenue from cement transport, a key commodity, surged 61% year on year to INR25.7bn. Revenue from iron and steel transport in the quarter also jumped, with pig iron and finished steel surging 97% to INR21.1bn. Freight business would have been higher but for the lockdown in India in April, with the gover nment only allowing a staggered resumption of economic activities from June. When the pandemic first hit in March 2020, the Indian government shut down

all rail services for 40 days for the first time in the carrier’s 167-year history. Overall business is still low compared with levels before March 2020, when the COVID -19 vir us outbreak forced lockdowns across the world. Meanwhile traffic from the country’s 12 major ports increased 27.2% on year to 180.6 million tonnes. Among major commodities, thermal coal traffic recorded a growth of 52.3% in the quarter to 26.9 million tonnes. Crude oil and fuel oil traffic recorded the lowest traffic growth of 8.7% to 52.4 million tonnes.

Business activity in India saw gradual V-shaped recovery in June: Nomura Research MUMBAI: Business activity in India witnessed a gradual V-shaped recovery in June from the low seen in May, based on data released so far, according to brokerage firm Nomura. However, the third wave of Covid-19 remained a key risk to economic recovery with a slowing vaccination pace and increased mobility in July, the

firm said in a note on Monday. The Nomura India Business Resumption Index (NIBRI), which tracked high frequency indicators such as mobility indices and power consumption, accelerated to 96.4 for the week ended July 18, from 94.9 the previous week. “The first flush of conventional

monthly data for June suggest a gradual V-shaped recovery from the nadir in May,” said Nomura economists Sonal Varma and Aurodeep Nandi, in the note. Mobility indicators such as Google’s workplace and retail and recreation mobility indices continued to rise 2.4 percentage points (pp) and 5.1pp weekon-week, respectively.

Growth in FY'22 to be around 11% as projected in Economic Survey, says CEA KV Subramanian NEW DELHI: Notwithstanding the second wave of COVID -19, Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) K V Subramanian on Monday expressed hope that economic growth during the current financial year would be around 11 per cent as projected in the latest Economic Survey. He also said the overall impact of the second wave on the economy will not be very large. "We will be in that ballpark," Subramanian said when asked if the Economic Survey's target of GDP growth will be met in the backdrop of the second wave of the pandemic.

The Economic Sur vey 2020-21, released in January this year, had projected GDP growth of 11 per cent during the current financial year ending March 2022. The Survey had said growth will be supported by supply-side push from reforms and easing of regulations, push for infrastructural investments, boost to manufacturing sector through the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, recovery of pent-up demand, increase in discretionary consumption subsequent to rollout of vaccines and

pick up in credit given adequate liquidity and low interest rates. "We will grow at a high growth rate this year. This year growth will be from the lower base but we anticipate 6.5-7 per cent growth next year FY'23 and from thereon, growth accelerating even further," he said. Growth will be aided by various structural reforms, including labour and farm laws, undertaken by the government, he said while addressing an event organised by the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers' Association.

Govt introduces Marine Aids to Navigation Bill in Rajya Sabha NEW DELHI: The government on Monday introduced a bill in Rajya Sabha to replace a nine-decade-old law governing lighthouses as technological changes are taking place at a fast pace in marine navigation. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal moved the Marine Aids to Navigation Bill, 2021, in Rajya Sabha. The bill was passed by Lok Sabha on March 22, 2021. The Marine Aids to Navigation Bill seeks to provide for a fresh framework to establish and manage vessel traffic services, besides changing the use of the term marine aids to navigation. “This will ensure compliance with

Port of Hamburg becomes 1st to test Drone Traffic System HAMBURG: In future, drones will have their own traffic system. This system, in essence a network of ser vices and procedures, will allow flights in areas with a high volume of drones to be carried out easily, safely, efficiently and in coordination with manned air traffic. This is the idea behind U-Space – a concept of EASA, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. EU member states have to implement U-Space by the beginning of 2023. Droniq GmbH, Germany’s leading company for the integration of drones into airspace, and its parent company DFS, the German air navigation service provider, are putting the idea into practice for the first time – from conception to commissioning. To this end, they are setting up a U-Space Sandbox in the Port of Hamburg, Germany’s largest seaport by volume. The project has a volume of approximately one million euro and is being funded partly by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). By doing so, the BMVI is setting the foundations for the implementation of further U-Spaces in Germany and promoting the further development of the local drone market. Drones are increasingly being used commercially, from inspecting construction sites to surveying posssible routes for piplines and roads. Drone flights will need to be easy to conduct and feasible at short notice. The reality is different, however, and drone flights are not always feasible, especially in areas with a high volume of drones. This is due to lengthy flight approval processes. U-Space, a spatially delimited airspace element, is intended to solve these challenges. In U-Space, special rules and procedures coordinate drone traffic. Drone flights can be carried out quickly, safely and without a long approval process – even beyond the pilot’s line of sight.

“In the future, U-Space will also allow the full potential of drones to be exploited in urban areas within an established framework,” says Droniq CEO Jan-Eric Putze. “For unmanned aerial transport, this is a milestone. We are proud to show for the first time what this future can look like.” “Our drone traffic systems puts us in an excellent position internationally, providing a solid foundation for the integration of drone airspace. In this way, we are enabling fast and uncomplicated drone operations. This is an important step towards digital aviation, combined with a proven safety standard,” explains Friedrich-Wilhelm Menge, Managing Director Technology at DFS. Experience U-Space yourself during the Flight Weeks In the fourth quarter, Droniq and DFS will demonstrate how a U-Space can function during the Flight Weeks. Prior to this, the conception, development and internal testing of the U-Space Sandbox will take place. The implementation of the U-Space Sandbox is being carried out with several project partners. These include the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), HHLA Sky GmbH, the Hamburg Ministry of Economics and Innovation, Hamburg Aviation and the project consortium UDVeo.
