SeaLead introduces Gulf India Express Service to enhance India-Gulf Trade Connectivity New service will provide fast access between India and Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman
Cont’d from Pg. 3
SC Chan, Acting Head of SeaLead, highlighted the strategic importance of the new service, stating, "The Gulf India Express is a critical addition to our services, designed to enhance the trade corridor between India and the Gulf region. As Saudi Arabia and UAE are key trading partners with India, this service aims to support the growing trade demands and foster stronger business relationships between these regions." Shiva Mahadevan, Managing Director for South Asia and the Middle East at SeaLead, commented on the service's impact, "The GIX service demonstrates our commitment to delivering reliable, efficient shipping solutions tailored to the needs of global trade. By connecting major ports in India with the Gulf, we are facilitating smoother trade operations, offering tangible
benefits to businesses and contributing to economic growth across these regions." The introduction of the Gulf India Express service is a strategic initiative, aligning with the ambitious goals of India and Saudi Arabia to double their bilateral trade to US$100 billion in the coming years from the current level of approximately US$52 billion. This service underscores the importance of enhancing trade relations not only with Saudi Arabia, India's second-largest trading partner, but also with the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the service's pivotal role in bolstering the trade links and facilitating economic cooperation across these significant markets.

Hazira Port has facility which can cater to loading and unloading of six ships simultaneously. Students also learned about the control process of handling of 229 chemicals tanks from a centralised location.
The delegates also had the opportunity to visit the oil production facility of Adani Wilmar wherein they gained first-hand knowledge of oil refining, packing and other related matters.
YOUR QUERIES - OUR SOLUTION by Dr. Pramod Sant, A distinguished Industry Expert QUESTION: We plan to import second-hand Capital Goods; we will be importing second-hand CG first time. We have heard that many times many challenges are faced in customs clearance, please explain the process and suggest precautions to be taken to ensure smooth clearance. SOLUTION: There is an excellent quote by Benjamin Franklin "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." Let us look at the step-by-step process and precautions to be taken A. Regulations • Foreign Trade Policy (FTP)-2023 Para 2.31 in FTP defines the policy for the import of Second hand/ used goods in India. As you have not mentioned exactly which Capital Good you are importing giving below complete table as per FTP
B. Valuation of second-hand/ used Capital Goods Ref CBIC Circular no 07/2020 dated 5.2.2020 It is an important step to check if the sale of second-hand machinery has met all the requirements stipulated in the Customs Valuation Rules 2007 for Determination of Valuation of Imported Goods. it is necessary to obtain inspection/appraisal reports from a qualified /emplaned Chartered Engineer. There are two ways to get a CE certificate. • Chartered Engineer Certificate at Origin A certificate issued at Origin by a reputed company is preferred as it saves time. The report of the overseas Chartered Engineer should be as per the format given in Form A. • Empaneled Chartered Engineer Certificate at Destination Port In the event it is not possible to procure a CE certificate from overseas then a Chartered Engineer empaneled locally by Custom House can issue CE certificate after examination as per Form B. Inspection at the destination port has challenges due to space constraints and packages being in the Customs location. Unpacking / repacking costs will be extra in addition to detention costs. It is advisable to get a draft of CE certificate before the final is issued. • Deprecation allowed by customs.
• Difference in value declared on Invoice and Chartered Engineer Certificate There could be three different values, the value for assessment will be calculated from the highest of the a. Declared value in Invoice Dr. Pramod Sant b. Depreciated value c. Assessed by an independent Chartered Engineer. If there are significant differences arising from such comparison, then the Custom Officer shall seek an explanation from the importer justifying the declared value. However, if Customs has reservations about second-hand/ used Capital Goods value they can take below steps. • Compare the value with past imports of similar CG by various importers. • Checks prices on the Internet -especially companies handling second-hand/ used CG. • Inquiry to International / local companies to ascertain prices. It is important that these aspects are checked and a decision is taken. C. Allied Acts and NON-Tariff Barriers All Allied Acts such as BIS, WPC, Hazardous goods etc. are also applicable to Second hand / used CG and it is important to check the same. D. Other important precautions 1. Dispatch Condition - It is very important to know in advance How CG goods will be dispatched • In case CG is dispatched in full (as it is without any dismantling. It is comparatively simple to explain and correlate with CE Certificate, Invoice, and Catalogue. • However, in case CG needs to be dismantled and dispatched many precautions need to be taken. o The photos / video of CG in assembled condition o Photos / Video in dismantled condition and in line with Packing list o Case-wise packing list o Detailed explanation or clarification about dismantling if required. 2. Other documents a. Product Catalogue b. Write up with flow diagram in simple words with vital facts of CG c. Form, Function, and End Use of Machine d. Buying price of Second hand / used Machine e. Depreciation value of the machine f. Case-wise packing list and unpacking instructions 3. Accessories and Spars – A list of Accessories and spares should be available with details. The function and Condition of the Accessory must be known such as mounted on CG or dispatched separately 4. Refurbishing cost – Many times Second CG is refurbished before dispatch, in case the same is refurbished such details and the cost of the same should be available as part of the Invoice. 5. Proforma invoice - It is advisable to get a Proforma invoice before dispatch to ensure the correctness. 6. Dispatch clearance - Before dispatch check all documents and after verification and finding to give the green light for dispatch 7. Customs Broker (CB) - Organize a Joint meeting with CB and external stakeholders like Freight Forwarders and internal stakeholders like technical experts before arrival where details are explained to CB. 8. Support during Customs Examination – Many times during customs examination engineer will be required to visit Customs. An engineer who is associated with the project / visited supplier and has good knowledge of CG imported needs to be deputed to Customs for support during an examination or to provide clarifications. 9. Monitoring - Ensure continuous monitoring of Freight Forwarder, CB to have prompt action in case of challenge. I am sure the above proactive measure will help to ensure smooth clearance.

Scope for more collaboration with Europe : MoPSW Secretary • We have created a mari me development fund • Need for the shipping sector to a ain infrastructure status for long-term financing Cont’d from Pg. 3
“India as a maritime nation is poised for growth, and there is a lot of potential available, especially with Europe. We have identified several areas where we are already collaborating, and there is scope for a lot of collaboration in the future,” Ramachandran said. Ramachandran, in his presentation, noted that while the India-Middle-East-Europe Connectivity Corridor (IMEEC) “has the potential to unlock deep cooperation”, the country could also gain from best practices of
shipbuilding and repair followed in Europe and attract investments in green shipbuilding. Ramachandran highlighted that India had made strides in doubling port capacity and increasing the national waterway cargo carrying capacity by 17 times over the last decade, but more could be done. “We have created a maritime development fund, which we are going to take forward,” Ramachandran said, highlighting the need for the shipping sector to attain infrastructure status for long-term financing. The Secretary, besides developing
green ports and one new major port at Vadhavan, also emphasised the role of technology to improve efficiency. “A lot of digital technologies, robotics to ensure that ports are efficient will be deployed,” he noted. He noted that while the development of the Blue economy by 2047 would require investment of nearly $1 trillion, the Ministry was eyeing financial support from stateowned banks and development banks. The Government last year, had announced that it had secured over Rs 10 lakh crore in investment at the Global Maritime India Summit 2023.
Need to boost competitiveness, attractiveness of India’s exports amid Global uncertainty : Finance Ministry Cont’d from Pg. 3
“Given persisting uncertainties for global output and trade growth, finding ways to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of India’s exports is both urgent and important,” the Finance Ministry’s Monthly Economic Review report for January, released on February 20, said. The comments from the Finance Ministry’s economists comes amid attacks on commercial vessels by Houthi rebels of Yemen in the Red Sea, which have raised concerns about global maritime commerce. Latest trade data released on Fe b r u a r y 1 5 s h o w e d I n d i a ’ s merchandise exports in January edged up by just 3.1 percent year-onyear to $36.92 billion, with a senior government official telling that growth in exports could have been higher if the Red Sea crisis hadn’t disrupted trade by forcing freight companies to take the longer route around Africa to reach the west or wait at nearby ports for safe passage through the Suez Canal. “Downside risks to trade include a
spike in new commodity prices from geopolitical shocks, including continued attacks in the Red Sea and supply disruptions or more persistent underlying inflation in the developed world, which could extend tight monetary conditions. This could impact the expected recovery in global demand, thereby affecting the prospects for India’s exports,” the Finance Ministry said in its report. For April 2023-January 2024 as a whole, India’s merchandise exports are down 4.9 percent at $353.92 billion, while imports are lower by 6.7 percent at $561.12 billion. Even while it flagged the need to work on India’s export strategy, the Finance Ministry maintained that the broader economic outlook “appears bright”. “Prospects of healthy Rabi harvesting, sustained manufacturing profitability, and underlying service resilience are expected to support economic activity in Fy25,” it said, adding that it sees household consumption improving. Further, with the private capital expenditure cycle on the up, business sentiment
improving, the government continuing to focus on capex, and banks’ and companies boasting healthy balance sheets mean the prospects of fixed investment are bright. “Many global agencies have revised India’s growth projections in FY24 upward from levels that were already higher than those of the major economies. Three successive years of high growth demonstrate the resilience of the Indian economy, built on the reforms of the past decade and reinforced by the testing experience of the pandemic,” it said. Calling strong private consumption “the bedrock of high growth”, the report said the response from the supply side has been broadbased. On prices, it said the Government’s supply interventions had helped contain food inflation, which is expected to moderate further going ahead. “ Wi t h t h e s t a b l e d o w n w a r d movement in core inflation and moderation in food prices, the outlook for a reasonably low headline inflation rate is good,” it said.
90% of waterways development projects completed : Sarbananda Sonowal GUWAHATI: Union Minister of Shipping and Ports Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has claimed that 90 per cent of projects undertaken for development of waterways in the last 10 years have been completed. The Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister urged youngsters to take advantage of the potential provided by improved waterways,
especially for cheaper transportation of goods and maritime-related career opportunities. Speaking at a programme to mark the inauguration and foundation stone laying of projects of Inland Waterways Authority of India worth over Rs. 284 crore here, Sonowal said, “Timely and quality implementation are hallmark of good governance
under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi”. “I am glad that 90 per cent of the projects undertaken in waterways development under Modi ji in last 10 years have been completed within his tenure itself. The remaining one-two projects will be completed by this year end”, the Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways added.

Maersk’s new integrated cold chain facility at Ruakura Superhub brings the Golden Triangle to life NEW ZEALAND: A.P. MollerMaersk (Maersk) celebrated the opening of its state-of-the-art, integrated cold chain facility at the Ruakura Superhub, solidifying Hamilton as a key touch point within the Golden Triangle for freighting and logistics in New Zealand. With approximately NZD 140-150 million invested in the Ruakura facility, it makes it Maersk’s biggest infrastructure investment in the country. The new facility effectively moves the ocean inland by offering customers end-to-end supply chain management including import, export, and crossdocking services. It enables the exchanging of goods between transport modes, such as rail and truck, creating a highly flexible and sufficient supply chain within the Waikato and wider New Zealand. Hamilton sits at the heart of the Golden Triangle, between Auckland and Tauranga, which sees 65% of New Zealand’s total freight flow through the strategic corridor. Maersk's new cold chain facility will help to enhance the region’s thriving economic and freight hub. “New Zealand has long played a vital role in the global supply chain from dairy, meat to seafood and fruits, the primary industry sector to drive the development of country’s economy. We have over the years made very significant investments in our ocean network and offer today a best-in-class experience from capacity, coverage, and reliability perspective. We have operated in New Zealand for 27 years – and we are enthusiastic about fostering sustained growth and forging these long-term partnerships with our customers,” said Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. MollerMaersk. The facility will leverage landside logistic capabilities allowing for larger quantities of imported and exported goods to flow through New Zealand and the wider Asia-Pacific region. “The new facility's ideal location now seamlessly links the ports of Auckland and Tauranga providing a supply chain for our customers and increases the volume of possible imports and exports to and from New Zealand, all while retaining the quality of the products. Expansion of our product solutions into the cold store segment presents a significant opportunity for our customers to benefit from a state-of-the-art facility, as we transform the New Zealand logistics landscape and connect and simplify our customer’s supply chains,” said, Kylie Fraser, Managing Director of Maersk Oceania. The facility will be well utilized by New Zealand’s largest dairy company, Fonterra, supporting their North Island production. Other customers Maersk are excited to see at the facility include BluePrint
Global/NZ Grass-Fed Butter, Mega Foods, and Service Foods. The multi-modal 18,000 square metre facility harnesses the dual-carriage State Highway 1 and direct rail connectivity to the Port of Tauranga and the Port of Auckland and has the capability to load 40ft containers holding 29 tonnes of product onto train carriages. The cold chain facility allows customers to retain the quality of their products during transit by housing nearly 30,000 pallets of products in both cold rooms and blast freezers. These blast freezers can freeze produce down to international food standards in less than 24 hours, locking in the quality and ensuring a fresher product when it reaches its destination. The multitude of rooms allows for various products to be stored at different temperatures satisfying diverse customer needs. Maersk has partnered with local iwi (tribe) Waikato-Tainui as owners of the land on which the Ruakura Superhub sits. Through the partnership, Maersk has made a significant social investment into the region through job creation and providing Waikato-Tainui with logistics and supply-chain training systems to upskill those in the community wishing to take up a career in logistics. Historically, Waikato-Tainui ancestors would trade up and down the nearby Waikato River and the partnership with Maersk acknowledges this ancient tradition. “Partnering with a global logistics giant like Maersk, who could see the massive benefits and efficiencies Ruakura Superhub offered, epitomises the vision we have for the Superhub as a critical supply chain enabler and driver of regional economic development. We’re proud to partner with Maersk to support their growth and ongoing contribution to Aotearoa New Zealand which will, in turn, support us to drive the economic resilience of our 86,000-strong iwi,” said, Tuku Morgan, Chairman of Te Arataura, the executive committee of Waikato-Tainui. Maersk was also proud to partner with commercial construction company, Apollo Projects on the design and construction of the facility and supply chain consultant TMX Transform for property advisory and project management.

India on track to become $35 trillion, fully developed economy by 2047: Shri Piyush Goyal NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal said that the present Gover nment’s ambition is to make India a fully developed nation by 2047 and all efforts are being made in this direction. While addressing a media delegation of 35 journalists from 19 countries of Latin American and the Caribbean in New Delhi, Shri Goyal said that the Government’s ambition is to increase the current $3.7 trillion economy to be a $30-35 trillion economy by 2047 and to ensure food and energy security of the nation. Shri Goyal hailed Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s relentless
pursuit of twin tracks - strengthening the macroeconomic fundamentals of India to prepare the country for the future and focus on the welfare of the poor pertaining to food, healthcare and education. The Union Minister said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s holistic vision to address the issues regarding welfare of the poor coupled with good governance over the last decade has helped India transform from the 11th largest to 5th largest economy in the world and is on track to become the 3rd largest GDP by 2027. Shri Goyal said that the current government has completed a turnaround of the macroeconomics of the country with the foreign currency
reserves being 4th largest in the world, twice since 2014, and the currency is amongst the best performing in developing countries. Shri Goyal said that India has witnessed the best performing decade in the last 75 years of Independence with inflation being halved in the past 12 years that has benefited the economy with interest rates in control. The Minister further said that the government inherited a broken economy when they came to power with a clear mandate in 2014. “We inherited a broken economy, deep in distress and a poor reputation around the world for the India growth story and its ability to play a part in geopolitics”, said Shri Goyal.
India to push for ending moratorium on customs duties on digital goods in WTO meet NEW DELHI: India will push to end a moratorium on customs duties on goods on e-commerce trade at the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) in Abu Dhabi later this month since such a leeway tends to benefit few developed nations, a government official from the Indian side said. This is a continuation of India’s earlier position that a country should be free to levy duties given that developing countries are losing out around $10 million in revenues due to the moratorium on customs duties on digital goods. Mc13 will take place from February 26-29 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates with ministers from across
the world in attendance. They will review the functioning of the multilateral trading system and take action on the future work of the WTO. The conference will be chaired by HE Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade. WTO members had agreed to not impose customs duties on electronic transmissions until Mc13. “India needs to levy customs duty to protect its nascent digital industry, and since the difference between digital goods and digital services isn’t well-defined, we are not in support of extending the moratorium further,” the official said. “There is no consensus on the scope of the moratorium. Customs
duties as a concept is always related to goods and not services. According to some countries, the duties are applicable to services as well. The proponents of the proposal need to explain what the moratorium covers,” a second government official said. Since 1998, WTO members have periodically agreed to extend the moratorium on the imposition of customs duties on electronic transmissions. The last extension was agreed in June 2022 at the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference (Mc12). In addition to extending the moratorium until MC13, WTO members at MC12 agreed to intensify discussions on the scope, definition and impact of the moratorium.

He was speaking at the ATMA Annual Conclave 2024, tyre industry flagship event.
Indian tyre exports have witnessed growth at an accelerated pace and have nearly doubled in the last four years. Tyres manufactured in India are being exported to more than 170 countries. SEZs to get more tax relief under RoDTEP cover NEW DELHI: The Government has decided to extend the benefits under tax remission scheme RoDTEP to exportoriented units and manufacturers in the Special Economic Zones (SEZs). This will allay the concerns among manufacturing units in SEZs about nonrefunded taxes denting their competitive edge in world markets. “After the roll-out of ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway) in SEZs, the RoDTEP scheme may also be extended to SEZs,” according to an office memorandum of the Commerce Ministry. ICEGATE is the national portal of Indian Customs of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) that provides e-filing services to the trade, cargo carriers and other trading partners. The inclusion of EoUs and SEZs in the RoDTEP (Remission of Duties or Taxes on Export Products) scheme will have to be notified by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Currently, RoDTEP covers around 10,610 export items with rates of tax refund ranging from 0.01% to 4.3%. But it doesn’t include exports from EOUs, SEZs, manufacturing and other operations in a Customs Bonded Warehouse and Advance Authorisation Scheme. The excluded sectors have been asking for inclusion in the RoDTEP as they maintain that they also pay embedded taxes on domestic procurement and fuel both for inward and outward transportation. This demand has been backed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce. Till now SEZ/EoUs have
been out of the scheme as the SEZs already get a slew of tax reliefs. “The decision may be a big bonanza for high import-intensive exports from SEZs,” according to trade policy think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). Meanwhile, through a series of proposed amendments to the SEZ Act, the Government was planning to ease conditions for the units in the duty-free enclaves which are deemed to be foreign territories for the purpose of trade operations, duties and tariffs. The amendments, which are now unlikely in the current Government’s tenure, would have made it much easier for SEZ units to sell goods in domestic tariff areas. Currently, sales from SEZs to DTAs are allowed but on payment of basic customs duty, Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST), antidumping, countervailing and safeguard duties (under the Customs Tariff Act, 1975), wherever applicable. SEZ units want the Government to go a step further. They want customs duties on domestic sales to be at par with what exporters from FTA countries pay. “A lot of big exports from SEZs, like electronics (including smartphones), petroleum products, diamonds, and gold jewellery, add less than 10% of their value in India. This means over 90% of what makes up these products comes from imports, which don’t have to pay duties. If these exports get a 3% incentive from the RODTEP scheme, it means they earn an extra $30 for every $100 they make. If we add other incentives like PLI, the figure will be very high,” Co-Founder of GTRI Ajay Srivastava said. The amount of such unrebated taxes
comes down when exports are importintensive and imports are duty free. Applying the same RODTEP rate to these imports could lead to overcompensation so a different set of rates should be applicable on SEZs, he said. RODTEP scheme which was launched in January 2021 to refund taxes/ duties/ levies, which are not being refunded under any other mechanism, at the central, state and local level, but which are incurred in the process of manufacture and distribution of exported products. It came in response to the successful challenge to five India’s five key export promotion schemes including Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) by the US at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2018. The refund in the scheme is in the form of transferable duty credit scrips that can be used to pay import duties or sold in the market by exporters. Under the Scheme, a support of Rs 27,018 crore was extended to exporters for the 27 months till March 31, 2023. The RoDTEP scheme operates under a budgetary framework and for FY 2023-24, a budget of Rs 15,070 crore has been made available for it. The exporters have also been asking for increasing the rate of refund under the scheme as it is much lower than what was available under the defunct MEIS. In September, 2023, the RoDTEP Committee was constituted by the Department of Revenue to review and recommend RoDTEP ceiling rates for different export sectors. The rates will be revised after carrying out the technical analysis based on the details submitted by the industry.
Agri based exports severely impacted due to Red Sea crisis MUMBAI: Red Sea crisis-induced supply chain disruption seems to have severely crimped the ability of Indian agricultural exporters to ship their commodities to global markets. Agri exports from India are mainly containerised grains, oil seeds, pulses, rice, sugar and vegetable oil, with Africa the top destination. But several leading agri trading houses have halted export movements in the wake of soaring ocean rates and equipment availability issues over the past month or so, according to industry sources. They noted that the crisis had effectively pushed the agri trades to commercially unviable market conditions, and for the trading community it is now simply ‘wait and watch’ for some respite. “Ocean freight rates have skyrocketed over the past month or so, along with various surcharges,” a Mumbai-based trader said. “Our profit margins are usually paper thin, so any extra burden is absolutely unaffordable,” the source explained.
The trader also noted other pain points, such as fewer available exportworthy containers and vessel space problems. “Shipments are often getting rolled due to vessels overbooking cargo, putting our export contracts in jeopardy,” the aggrieved trader said. Some exporters also expressed fears that buyers using alternative sourcing markets on an ad-hoc basis could permanently shift away from India if the crisis continues. A CEO of Hyderabad-based NVO and ship agent, said the situation was “alarming”. He added: “This trend is mirrored in the sharp drop in exports reported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, from 24% to 11%, impacting both the Indian economy and global markets, especially in crucial commodities like rice and sugar.” Over the past few years, India’s agri exports have seen strong traction – hitting some $53.1bn by value last fiscal year (2022-23), according to available Government data. Processed
vegetables, basmati rice and fresh fruits particularly reported growth, as exporters expanded their market reach. “Basmati rice found its way to the top markets, with Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the US and the UAE emerging as the top destinations for these exports,” said a Government statement last week. “This robust performance underscores the enduring popularity and global demand for basmati rice, further solidifying its position as a major agricultural product in India’s export portfolio,” it added. Meanwhile, India’s overall export trade saw a modest uptick last month, up 3% year on year by value. But the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations (FIEO) reiterated industry concerns over deteriorating geopolitical factors. “Recent tensions in West Asia, especially the threat to consignments routing through the Red Sea, have further added to the woes of the exporting community,” said FIEO President Israr Ahmed.

APEDA catapults agricultural exports from modest USD 0.6 billion exports in FY1987-88 to USD 26.7 billion in FY 2022-23 NEW DELHI: From its modest beginnings with annual exports of USD 0.6 billion in exports during 1987-88, proactive inter ventions by the Agricultural and Processed Food P r o du c t s E x p o r t D e ve lo pm e nt Authority (APEDA) have taken agricultural exports to a remarkable figure of USD 26.7 billion in the fiscal year 2022-23. This journey of exponential growth is underscored by expanding the export basket to over 200 countries, showcasing a commendable Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12%. In the fiscal period 2022-23, India's agricultural exports reached USD 53.1 billion, with APEDA contributing a significant 51% of India’s Agriexports. In the period AprilD e c e m b e r, 2 0 2 3 , a m o n g t h e 23 Principal Commodities (PCs) in APEDA's export basket, 18 exhibited positive growth. Notably, 13 out of 15 large PCs, with exports exceeding USD 100 million in the previous year,
experienced positive growth, with an average growth rate of 12%. Fresh fruits emerged as a standout performer, registering a remarkable growth of 29%. Moreover, the export of processed vegetables surged by 24% in the period followed by Miscellaneous processed items, Basmati Rice, and Fresh Vegetables also saw substantial growth compared to the corresponding period last year. Notably, India has significantly expanded its fresh fruits export footprint, now ser ving 111 countries compared to 102 destinations in the previous year. On its 38th Foundation Day on 13.02.2024, APEDA commemorated a remarkable journey of fostering agricultural exports, culminating in significant milestones and unprecedented growth. Founded in 1986 with the mission to promote the export of agricultural products, APEDA has evolved into a pivotal force in catapulting India's agricultural exports to new heights. During April-November 2023,
several key commodities witnessed substantial growth compared to the previous year, like, Bananas: 63%, Lentils (dried and shelled): 110%, Fresh eggs: 160% and Kesar and Dasheri Mango: 120% and 140%, respectively. During the period from April to December 2023, the export value of Basmati rice surged by 19%, reaching USD 3.97 billion compared to USD 3.33 billion in the previous year. Simultaneously, the quantity of exports witnessed a notable growth of 11%, increasing from 31.98 lakh metric tons to 35.43 lakh metric tons within the same timeframe. Basmati rice found its way to the top markets, with Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the USA, and the UAE emerging as the top five destinations for these exports. This robust performance underscores the enduring popularity and global demand for Basmati rice, further solidifying its position as a major agricultural product in India's export portfolio.
Govt approves onion exports of 0.3 MT to select countries NEW DELHI: The Government has approved exports of around 0.3 million tonne of onion to countries including Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Mauritius on a Government-to Government basis following their request. Sources said that an official notification is expected soon. The shipment is likely to be executed by March31, 2024. A senior official told that there would not be any blanket lifting of the ban on shipment of onion exports imposed in December, 2023. Instead, shipment
would be allowed in limited ways with “terms and conditions”. Farmer groups who have been demanding a total lifting of the ban on onion exports, because of sharp fall in mandi prices, said that the volume of exports approved is too small to boost prices in the domestic market. According to the department of consumer affairs, the modal wholesale prices of onion dropped to Rs 2000/quintal on Monday from Rs 5000/quintal prevailed on December 8, 2023, when ban on exports was announced.
Retail modal prices have softened to Rs 20/kg at present from Rs 60/kg in December last year. Sources said that a team of officials had visited key onion growing states to assess the onion stocks and it has been found that there is sufficient stock of the vegetable currently available to meet the demand for the next two months. “The rabi harvest is likely to peak in April,” an official said, adding that rabi harvest constitutes about 60% of the total output and is stored for supplies till October.

Unifeeder completes agreement for two additional methanol-powered vessels AARHUS: Unifeeder Group has successfully completed a longterm charter agreement for two a d d i t i o n a l methanol-capable container feeder vessels. This follows the agreement for two initial vessels announced in October 2023, underscoring the group’s commitment to greener shipping solutions. The latest agreement is in partnership with Germanbased ship owning group Elbdeich Reederei and Norwegian shipowner MPC Container Ships (MPCC), who are responsible for one vessel each. The 1250 twentyfoot equivalent unit (TEU) vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2026, will be deployed on Unifeeder’s European network. The addition of these new vessels reinforces the group’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions across its network. Simultaneously, Unifeeder is enhancing fuel efficiency throughout the fleet while increasing the utilization of biofuels in its conventional vessels. In alignment with its parent company, DP World, Unifeeder collaborates with industry partners to address t h e c h a l l e n g e o f r e n e w a b l e m e t h a n o l s u p p l y. This requires off-take commitments to establish production at the scale needed to replace conventional fossil fuels within the industry. Jesper Kristensen, Group CEO of Unifeeder Group, said: “Building upon our commitment to methanol-powered vessels last year, this marks another significant stride towards the green transformation of our fleet and operations. We anticipate the vessels to enter into operation in the next two years, advancing our
steadfast commitment to sustainable solutions. We offer our customers alternatives that align with their sustainability journeys while making meaningful progress towards our own ambitious decarbonization goals.” The investment in the two new additional ships further supports Unifeeder Group’s ambitious decarbonization plan. Surpassing the industry average, Unifeeder has committed to a 25 per cent reduction of emissions by 2030 and to reach net-zero by 2050 with no new fossil greenhouse gas emissions. It aims to achieve this by emphasizing fuel-efficient practices, regular maintenance and refitting processes of the existing fleet and fostering a culture of learning and collaboration, sharing best practices across markets to drive effective carbon reduction strategies. Unifeeder Group is part of DP World Marine Services, which announced in December 2023 it had reduced its carbon footprint by more than 16% in 2023 from its 2019 baseline of 2,118 ktCO2e by creating efficiencies across its operations. DP World also joined the First Movers Coalition, setting a target for 5% of its marine power to come from zero-emissions fuels by 2030, marking its commitment to decarbonization – a sentiment echoed by the Unifeeder Group.
