PM Modi inaugurates Inland Water Terminal, Jetties and e-portals PANI & CAR-D for EoDB Jogighopa IWT Terminal will strengthen an alterna ve route to connect Assam with Haldia Port and Kolkata through a waterway NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Ro-Pax vessel operations between Neamati-Majuli Island, North Guwahati-South Guwahati and Dhubri-Hatsingimari. He also laid the foundation stone of Inland Water Transport (IWT) Terminal at Jogighopa and various tourist jetties on River Brahmaputra and launched digital solutions for Ease-of-Doing-Business in presence of MoS (I/C) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Chief Minister of Assam and Meghalaya. Shri Modi said that this will strengthen water connectivity by Brahampurta water through port-led development. The three Ro-Pax services which were launched makes Assam a front-runner state to be connected with Ro-Pax services at this scale. The Prime Minister added that in recent years, steps were taken to re-establish Multi-Modal connectivity in Assam. The Prime Minister said work on Inland waterways is going to make a major impact here. He said recently an agreement with Bangladesh to improve water connectivity has been made. By connecting the North East with the rest of India, dependence of the region on the narrow connecting part would be reduced. He added Jogighopa IWT Terminal will strengthen an alternative route to connect Assam with Haldia Port and Kolkata through a waterway. Bhutan and Bangladesh cargoes at this

terminal and cargoes at Jogighopa Multi-Modal Logistics Park would get facilities for movement to different places on the Brahmaputra River. The Prime Minister said e-portals are being launched for the users to get accurate information. The Car-D portal will help in collating real-time information on all the cargo and cruise traffic data of the National Waterway. It will also provide information related to the infrastructure of Waterway. He also launched eportal PANI for ease of doing business.

Cargo traffic at 12 Major Ports falls for 10th month in Jan; down 7 % in Apr-Jan : IPA NEW DELHI: India’s 12 ports witnessed a considerable decline in cargo traffic for the tenth straight month in January to 542.13 million tonnes (MT), according to ports” apex body IPA. Cargo traffic at 12 Major Ports that are under the control of the Centre dropped by 7.44 per cent to 542.13 million tonnes (MT) during April-January this fiscal, compared with 585.73 MT in the year-ago period. Recently, Ports, Shipping and Wa t e r w a y s M i n i s t e r M a n s u k h Mandaviya said the cargo traffic at 12 Major Ports declined considerably March onwards due to the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. All ports, barring Paradip and Mormugao — which recorded 0.24 per cent and 28.12 per cent increase in cargo handling to 93.60 MT and 17.19 MT

respectively, saw negative growth. Cargo handling at Kamrajar Port (Ennore) nosedived 25.94 per cent during April-January to 19.66 MT, while ports like Mumbai and Chennai saw their cargo volumes dropping by over 12 per cent during the said period. Cochin and V.O. Chidambaranar ports suffered a sharp decline of over 11 per cent. JNPT saw a decline of 9.76 per cent in cargo volumes, while Deendayal Port Trust, New Mangalore and Kolkata ports saw over 6 per cent drop in cargo volume. Cargo handling at Visakhapatnam slipped 4.36 per cent. India has 12 major ports under the control of the central government — Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla), M u m b a i , J N P T, M o r m u g a o , New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai,

Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V. O. Chidambaranar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia). In the wake of the COVID -19 pandemic, sharp declines were witnessed in the handling of containers, coal and POL (petroleum, oil and lubricant), among other commodities. These ports handle about 61 per cent of the country’s total cargo traffic. They handled 705 MT of cargo last fiscal. Mandaviya had told Parliament earlier that there was a considerable decline in the total traffic, containers traffic and other than containers traffic in March, April, May, June, July and August 2020, as compared to the corresponding months in 2019. The Minister, however, had added that recovery has started since June 2020.

IIM Ahmedabad launches a Multidisciplinary Centre for Transportation and Logistics Research The centre will address cri cal passenger and freight transporta on, and logis cs challenges AHMEDABAD: Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), a premier B-school in the Asia Pacific region has recently established a Centre for Transportation and Logistics, co-chaired by Dr. Debjit Roy and Dr. Sandip Chakrabarti, faculty at IIMA. The initiative comes with a vision to facilitate cutting-edge research in transportation, logistics and allied areas, and thereby contribute to scholarship, practice, and policymaking in India and abroad. Moreover, it also helps to strengthen and scale-up IIMA’s presence and impact in the transportation and logistics sector. IIMA has a rich legacy in the domain of transportation and logistics, and has immensely contributed to both academic research and practice in this area. IIMA faculty members have written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and cases in network design, mode choice, warehousing, infrastructure, and transport policy. The institute, through the Centre for Transportation and Logistics (CTL), will offer an integrated, multidisciplinary program of research, post-graduate and executive education, technology transfer, and policy advice for enhancing the mobility of people and goods. Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Debjit Roy, faculty and one of the co-founders of CTL at IIMA said, “We are delighted to have established a centre that will address existing roadblocks and challenges in the transportation and logistics sector, which is one of the most instrumental sectors for our country’s economic growth. Our objective behind

establishing the CTL is to contribute to improving the efficiency of multi-modal transportation systems and supply chain logistics, thereby promoting economic growth and fostering sustainable development. We have faculty coming in from across the institute that have joined the centre as members. A group of internationallyacclaimed professors with outstanding research accomplishments from North American, European and Asian universities have joined the centre’s research advisory committee for providing guidance in centre development and supporting a range of academic activities.” R e c e n t l y, t h e C e n t r e f o r Transportation and Logistics organized a virtual inauguration with a panel discussion on the topic “Trends and Innovations in Transportation and Logistics” with distinguished panelists spanning academia, industry and government. IIMA Director Dr. Errol D’Souza inaugurated the event and addressed the participants, stressing on the importance of transportation and logistics networks in India's structural transformation, economic growth, and social development. Dr. D’Souza added that the tradition of IIMA is to perform cutting edge research not only in the management sciences but also for socioeconomic development. He indicated that the goal of the centre would not only be to find ways of reducing transportation and logistics operating costs, but also to promote social inclusion and to address environmental sustainability issues. Sharing his thoughts on the i n a u g u r a l e v e n t , D r. S a n d i p Chakrabarti, faculty and one of the co-

founders of CTL at IIMA said, “The inaugural panel discussion highlighted critical transportation and logistics issues in India that need urgent attention. The panelists provided valuable suggestions on how our centre can address India specific problems, and thereby support the transportation and logistics ecosystem in the country. The experts emphasized the need for research in swappable batteries and charging infrastructure for electrification of road transportation systems. They voiced the need for research in integrated cold chains and multi-temperature vehicles for frozen food transportation. Finding ways to improve customer affordability for vehicle purchase was identified as a key thrust area in the commercial vehicle industry. The panelists underscored the need for creative planning, policy and design solutions and a collaborative approach to promote sustainable transportation in cities, including walking, bicycling, electric mobility, shared transportation, and public transit. They noted that the shift from private mobility to shared mobility has been remarkable, and argued that the pace of electrification in the transportation sector is likely to get accelerated. It was clear from the discussion that prudent transportation and logistics planning is important for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.” The IIMA Centre for Transportation and Logistics plans to organize a series of webinars, workshops and panel discussions periodically throughout the year. The centre will also have rolling opportunities for postdoctoral research and distinguished visiting scholar positions.

Will suspend Freight services if demands not addressed soon : Trucker’s Body NEW DELHI: Transporters in the state of Delhi have lent their support to the All India Motor Transport Congress’ call to suspend freight services indefinitely if the government fails to address issues like fuel price hike and e-way bill validity in the next 14 days. Recently, the transport association had passed a resolution stating that it will suspend country-wide freight services indefinitely to protest against the gover nment’s alleged indifference towards their demands. “There was a demand from the association leaders across the country to pass a resolution calling for an indefinite nationwide suspension of operations to protest against the government’s indifference and to make the government wake up to our demands. The associations’ national leadership has decided to give 14 days to the government to start a process to address the issues,” All India Motor

Transport Congress (AIMTC) president Kultaran Singh Atwal said. Recently, transporters from the state said they will support the call. They have also asked all operators to gear up for a full fledged protest if the government fails to look into their demands. According to truckers, they have not recovered from the economic shock caused by the lockdown. By reducing e-way bill validity and allowing them only one day to unload consignment covering 200 kms, the government has made freight services financially unviable, they say. Earlier, the single-day permit was for 100 kms. According to truckers, the change was introduced last month without any consultation with transport operators. “From big transport companies to smallscale operators, everyone will be affected by this. It is not based on ground reality. Earlier, truckers were given one day to pick up consignments and drop those at a

destination 100 kms away. But now, they are forced to deliver consignments covering up to 200 kms in a single day,” said city-based transporter SC Sharma. He added: “It does not consider the fact there is traffic congestion on many roads and different vehicles have different moving capacity depending on their type and load. We want a discussion on this and a solution to our problems.” “We support the call to suspend freight services indefinitely if the government does not look into our demands in the next two weeks,” Sharma said. According to most transporters, the issue of validity of e-way bills has become bigger than the problems associated with the fuel price hike. Transporters have said that if the government fails to look into their demands, then a governing council meeting would be convened and they would declare a nationwide suspension of operations.

Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board to boost Trade HYDERABAD: Stating that Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board has decided to take proactive role to promote exports from the state, Maritime Board Deputy Chief Executive Ofcer Lt Cdr BM Ravindranath Reddy has said that they are taking measures to put the state on the top of the economy’s chart. He said that maritime board would facilitate the industries and traders to handle more business by creating proper infrastructure and eco-system. He said that dry ports were also playing

big role in handling decent turnovers of exports and imports from the state. Lt Cdr Ravindranath Reddy visited Inland Container Depot (ICD) of SC Railway on the outskirts of Guntur city. Speaking to the media, Reddy said that ICDs, which are known as dry ports, play a very important role in the global supply chain as are very helpful to exporters and importers situated far away from sea ports. “Our aim is to generate and facilitate more trade from the state to improve the economy. Services at ICDs

should also be extended to the industries in Rayalaseema as the region is away from the sea port,” said Reddy. He asked the ICD officials to ready an action plan to extend services to the industrial clients from the areas that were not in the vicinity of the sea ports. He promised that the maritime board and state government would extend their full support to any such proposal if readied by the ICD. He also inspected the facilities and infrastructure available at the terminal.

Kannur Airport kicks off cargo services, gets air cargo complex KANNUR: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that efforts were being made to introduce more services, including those of foreign airlines, from the Kannur International Airport. He expressed the hope that the Central government would take a positive approach in this regard.

The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating online the cargo complex of the Kannur International Airport. He asked Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Hardeep Singh Puri, who was the chief guest, to take a favourable approach in allowing foreign companies

to operate services from Kannur. E.P. Jayarajan, Industry, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, presided over the function. Ports and Archaeology Minister Ramachandran Kadannapally and KIAL managing director V. Tulsidas inaugurated the newly opened duty free shop at the airport.

Govt to infuse Rs.1,500 cr into Export Import Bank of India next fiscal MUMBAI: The government has decided to infuse Rs. 1,500 crore capital into state-owned Export-Import Bank of India in the next financial year. The amount is Rs. 200 crore higher than the provision made by the government for the current fiscal. The government has earmarked Rs. 1,300 crore capital infusion for the bank. “The ( Rs. 1,500 crore) provision is for Export-Import Bank of India as equity support/ subscription to increase

the paid up capital of the bank to the level of its authorised capital,” as per the Budget documents presented in Parliament earlier this month. The gover nment doubled the authorised capital of the bank from Rs. 10,000 crore to Rs. 20,000 crore in 2019. The Bank is the principal export credit agency in India and the capital infusion will give an impetus to new initiatives such as supporting Indian

textile industry, likely changes in the concessional finance scheme, likelihood of new letters of credit in future in view of the country’s active foreign policy and strategic intent. Established in 1982, the bank primarily lends for exports from India, including supporting overseas buyers and Indian suppliers for export of developmental and infrastructure projects, equipment, goods and services from the country.

India pushing ahead with Kaladan Transit project in Myanmar NEW DELHI: India is pushing ahead with the Kaladan transit project in Myanmar’s Rakhine state as it is seen as key to improving connectivity with the landlocked northeastern states and creating conditions to facilitate the repatriation of Rohingya refugees. The Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project, being implemented with an Indian grant of $484 million, includes development of Sittwe port in Myanmar, an inland water terminal at Paletwa on the Kaladan river and creating road connectivity from Paletwa to Zorinpui in Mizoram. The project has been hit by delays due to work being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the threat posed by rebels of the Arakan Army, which has targeted the shipment of materials for the infrastructure project and attacked Myanmar troops providing security to the venture. During a visit by foreign secretary Harsh Shringla and Indian Army chief Gen MM Naravane to Myanmar last

October, both sides discussed the operationalisation of Sittwe port in the first quarter of 2021. Despite questions raised by the military coup in Myanmar, recent remarks by external affairs minister S Jaishankar indicated the project is on track. “The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transport link, including the Sittwe port and the Paletwa inland water terminal, will add to our access to the Myanmar coastline,” Jaishankar said during an address in Guwahati. The project is aimed at enhancing access to the sea for the seven northeastern states, which are currently dependent on ports in Bangladesh. Access to a port in Myanmar will shorten the distance for transporting heavy cargo for northeastern states such as Manipur and Mizoram, which share borders with Myanmar. The Indian government is also keen on the project as it believes it will boost

economic development in Rakhine state and create the grounds for the return of Rohingya refugees currently sheltering in Bangladesh. India, which has often been nudged by Bangladesh to help facilitate the repatriation of the refugees, believes the best course for it in this matter is to create conditions in Rakhine for the safe and sustainable return of the Rohingyas, people familiar with developments said on condition of anonymity. Another reason for India’s push for the Kaladan project is to counter China’s plans to create the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) centred round a deep-water port at Kyaukpyu in Rakhine state. The people said one of the crucial portions of the Kaladan project, which has faced several delays, is the construction of a 109-km road from Zorinpui in Mizoram to Paletwa in Myanmar. This work is expected to take some more time, the people said.

Commerce Minister emphasizes on fair dealing in engagement with the US NEW DELHI: The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Railways and Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution, Shri Piyush Goyal said that trade between India & the US has grown exponentially, but still there is a lot to be desired. Delivering the inaugural virtual address at the annual @USIBC State of US - India Business, he said that we had set a modest target of half a trillion dollar, which he hoped can be achieved through continuous engagement between the two nations. Shri Goyal said that the US & India complement each other. He said that the U S o f f e r s t e c h n o l o g y, f i n a n c e & innovation, whereas India has a large market that needs to be served. He however added that at the same time, we need to protect people in agriculture, & protect the citizens from low quality products. Emphasizing at a fair dealing in our engagement, he said that India provides an under-served aspirational market. The minister said that the US will have to be very sensitive to price

points in India, which matter to emerging economies with millions of people just coming out of poverty. Inviting businesses in the US to look at India as a manufacturing base, Shri Goyal said that from here you can serve a large Indian market and at the same time, also serve global markets through cost-competitive products. He said that our reforms in defence, mining, labour and agriculture sector will open up new opportunities for the American companies. He mentioned about the announcement in the Union budget to increase the FDI limit in insurance to 74%. The Minister said that he looks forward to re-kindle bilateral institutional mechanism for trade, the Trade Policy Forum, and commercial dialogue to deepen this relationship through continuous engagements. “As democracies wanting to give a better future to our people, we have a lot of synergy in our thinking. I am delighted to hear that the new administration has

re-joined the Paris Agreement”, he added. Shri Goyal said that we are keen to expand on the digital space with the US. He added that we would be conscious of our responsibility to the people of India for data privacy. “There are a lot of concerns with the big tech companies, and India would like to protect its policy space.” The Minister said that India provides free healthcare to 500 million people, and this is the world's largest free healthcare programme. He said that our health cost to our people has to be kept very affordable. Shri Goyal said that in some sense, India is already recognised as the 'Pharmacy of the World', as we provide a lot of generic medicines at affordable prices to large parts of the world. He also highlighted that the budget on healthcare has been increased very significantly and very large amounts of money will be invetsed on the 'Jal Jeevan Mission' over the next 4-5 years to provide clean drinking water to every home.

India begins anti-dumping probe into plastic processing machine imports from China NEW DELHI: India has begun an anti-dumping investigation on imports of plastic processing machines imported from China on the basis of a complaint filed by the Plastics Machinery Manufacturers Association of India to the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) alleging that dumping is causing injury to the domestic industry. “The Authority notes that there is

prima facie evidence of dumping and consequential injury to the domestic industry on account of significant volume of imports,” DGTR said in a notification on Thursday. Container Shipping emerges triumphant from a disrupted 2020 : BIMCO OSLO: In the full year of 2020, global container shipping volumes fell by 1.2% compared with 2019, much less than feared even before the pandemic was first declared, and much recovered compared with the 6.8% drop recorded in the first six months of the year. Volumes in the second half of the year were up 4.2% from 2019. Much of this growth was concentrated on just a few trade lanes, with congestion and imbalances on these spilling out and causing disruption on other trades. BIMCO expects that 2021 will be even better for container shipping than 2020, as the current backlog will take months to clear and carriers are using the current strength of the market to lock in long-term contract rates for the coming 12 months at higher levels than in 2020. By far the largest volume growth was seen on the Far East to North America trade. On this route, volumes rose by 3.6m TEU in the second half of the year compared with the first, while volumes rose 2.1m TEU compared with the second half of 2019, enough to bring full year growth into positive (+1.4m TEU). The second half growth caused major disruptions in many US West Coast ports, as they were unable to keep up with record high volumes while implementing social distancing among workers at the same time, due to the p a n d e m i c . Fu r t h e r m o r e , l o w e r manufacturing and containerised exports in H1 2020 meant that the imbalance on the trade got even worse, leading to equipment shortages as containers were stuck in the wrong places. Weaker H2 recovery on the other major trades Of the three most important, highvolume trades, the Far-East to North America was the only one to grow over the full year, as growth on intra-Asian and Far East to Europe trades in the second half of the year was not enough to make up for H1 losses. After falling by 1.1m TEU in the first half of the year, volumes between the Far East and Europe were only up by 0.2m TEU in the second half of 2020, leaving full year volumes on this trade down 5.2% compared with 2019. On the Intra-Asian trades, a 2.2% growth in the second half of the year compared to H2 2019, was not enough to recover a 4.0% loss in the first half. There were only very few trades which bucked the trend and grew in the first half of the year. One of them was the Indian subcontinent and Middle East exports to the Far East; the thirteenth largest trade which saw volumes increase by 115,000 TEU in H1 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. “The particularly strong recovery in demand for containerised goods in the US was driven by a rise in consumer spending, particularly on goods for the homes that people have been spending much more time in, as well as higher spending on goods as consumers were unable to spend what they usually do on services,” says Peter Sand, BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst. “As manufacturing in consuming countries has struggled to recover to its prepandemic levels, imports have outgrown demand for a number of goods in order to fill the gap. This development is hugely beneficial for shipping.” Uptick in volumes soon played out on spot freight rates Freight rates did not experience the same drop as volumes did in the first half of the year, as carriers pushed losses onto

tonnage providers. Charter rates did however fall steeply from mid-February to June. On the routes from the Far East towards the US and Europe, only spot rates to Europe fell over the course of the first half of the year, bottoming out in April at just under USD 1,639 per TEU, which was still higher than rates in much of 2019. Once volumes started to rise, rates followed the upwards journey that would take them to the record high levels which carriers are still enjoying today. The first increase in spot rates was seen on the Far East to US West Coast trade, as this was where the uptick in volumes happened first and fastest. As the scale of the recovery on this trade was uncovered and the idle fleet nose-dived as carriers added capacity to meet rising demand across the board, rates on other routes also started rising, first on Far East to the US East Coast, and then a couple of months later, a sudden jump in rates to Europe followed. In recent months, the steep upwards path of spot freight rates on the transpacific trade lanes have stopped, partly due to intervention from the Chinese government. However, as demand has remained strong, and carriers still hold the upper hand, gradually increasing surcharges have been added to the base freight rates. This has stopped freight rates from rising further but left shippers with higher costs. As of midFebruary, surcharges to guarantee space and equipment on the major trades stand between USD 1,500 and USD 2,500 per TEU. Carriers scrambling to get hold of extra tonnage The sudden surge in demand for ships played out not only on the spot market but also on charter rates which have seen a steep V-shaped recovery since June 2020, with rates for all ships considerably higher than their pre-pandemic levels. Charter rates for 6-to-12-month contracts currently stand at USD 13,700 per day for a 1,700 TEU feeder ship, USD 23,000 per day for a 3,500 TEU ship and USD 42,000 for a 8,500 TEU ship. Even at these rates, carriers are desperate to get hold of any extra tonnage they can, in many cases to ensure that they can stick to their announced schedule as delays in importing ports mean that many ships are unable to make it back in time for their next scheduled departure. High demand and earning potential for ships mean that demolitions also fell considerably in 2020, with most of the demolition coming in only two months. Had demolition yards been open and able to operate normally at the height of the crisis in Q2 when demand for container ships reached its low point, demolition would no doubt have climbed upwards. As it happened, this was not possible and instead, owners had to wait until June before they could get rid of any substantial tonnage. What followed was two months of higher demolitions, which saw 103,436 TEU leave the market, more than half of what was demolished in the whole year. By the end of July however, demolitions were once again all but stopped, as demand for container ships rose and many owners found that even their older and less efficient ships became very profitable. In the last quarter of 2020, only 7,448 TEU were removed from the market, all of which from feeder ships, down 70.9% from the same period in 2019. At the same time, as demolitions slowed,

contracting picked up, with 65 new ships amounting to 751,057 TEU being ordered. In the full year, the container shipping fleet grew by 2.9% in 2020 as 857,616 TEU was added to the market compared to 188,800 TEU being demolished. “The high earnings that carriers have achieved in recent months is not a reflection of better fundamentals in the container shipping market, but rather a result of how 2020 has developed. In the longer run, this artificial tightness in the market will subside and container shipping will once again have to deal with the pre-pandemic overcapacity in the market, made worse by new orders made in recent months,” says Peter Sand. How long will it last? As carriers release their full year results, announcing profits of a size not seen for many years, heads are turning towards how this year will turn out, and here, more good news appear to be on the horizon. Firstly, and most importantly, are the long-term contracts for this year which have either been fixed in recent months or are still being negotiated. For all but the largest shippers, for whom carriers have in many cases rolled over last year ’s rates in recognition that these shippers are too big to lose, long term rates will increase compared to last year. The current tightness in supply means that carriers have the upper hand when negotiating these new contracts, and although many shippers have initially been reluctant to sign new contracts, they will inevitably do so in the coming months. This will be done at high rates to the benefit of carriers, even if the spot market falls from its current highs. The same goes for tonnage providers who are securing their ships on 6-to-12month charters at today’s high charter rates. As to the cur rent disr uption and equipment shortages, BIMCO believes this will take at least until the middle of the year to be resolved, as a large backlog still needs clearing and equipment needs repositioning. In the coming weeks, BIMCO will publish its first shipping market overview and outlook of 2021, looking at container shipping as well as the general macroeconomic situation, dry bulk and tanker shipping.

Hapag-Lloyd expects very strong earnings growth in the rst quarter of 2021 HAMBURG: Hapag-Lloyd has got the year off to a very good start thanks to exceptionally strong demand for container transports, which has led to a much higher level of freight rates. Based on preliminary business figures for the month of January and the current business situation, the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG expects the performance indicators EBITDA and EBIT for the first quarter of 2021 to be significantly higher than in the prior-year period. EBITDA is currently expected to be at least USD 1.8 billion (at least EUR 1.5 billion) compared to USD 517 million (EUR 469 million) in Q1 2020. For EBIT, the Executive Board of HapagLloyd AG currently expects at least USD 1.5 billion (at least EUR 1.25 billion) compared to USD 176 million (EUR 160 million) in Q1 2020. At the same time, the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG expects that the EBITDA and EBIT for the 2021 business year as a whole will clearly surpass the prior-year level. However, the forecast for the year is subject to considerable uncertainty due to a number of factors, including: the aboveaverage volatility of freight rates at this time; operational challenges caused by existing infrastructural bottlenecks, among other things; and the inability to predict the further

course or economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. “We will see a very strong result in the first quarter, but we a n t i c i p a t e a normalisation as the year progresses. We are still seeing slower container turn times, significant congestion in ports around the globe, capacity constraints in rail and truck, and the risks of the coronavirus pandemic remain. Nevertheless, we do also expect that the result for 2021 as a whole will be significantly higher than the prior-year level. At the same time, we will continue to keep our focus on our employees, serving our customers in the best possible way and the implementation of our Strategy 2023,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. Additional details on the 2021 forecast will be published with the release of the 2020 Annual Report on 18 March 2021. The final business figures for the first quarter of 2021 will also be published as planned on 12 May 2021.
