Gujarat Pipavav Port identies innovative ways to reduce power consumption P I PAVAV: W h e n i t comes to reducing power consumption and associated emissions, large pieces of equipment often take the spotlight, as these can offer a quick win. But often, a small change, replicated many times can be just as effective. And this is exactly what Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd.[APM Terminals Pipavav] achieved recently. Through altering the Printed Circuit Board of more than 200 air conditioners around the Port, to a fixed temperature of 24 degree Celsius they reduced power use and associated emissions and achieved an annual saving of around 5 million INR (approximately USD60,000). This improvement was the winning initiative during the Port’s quarterly Kaizen contest. Kaizen is a Japanese approach to continuous improvement using a range of lean methodologies that are part of APM Terminals Way of Working. Kaizen leads got an opportunity to showcase their initiatives and the event also served as a platform for sharing best practices for different departments to leverage. Kaizens were judged on the application of Lean tools and the impact each initiative had on Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC). The Kaizen undertaken by Asset Management team, led by Dhruv Yadav, focused on ‘Reducing power consumption to improve KWH/move’. Other initiatives included Improving the Pilot boarding and disembarking process to enhance safety of pilots, Standardisation of

RTG slow down parameters to improve Running hrs per move and Enhancing navigation safety through the approach channel. The company’s Way of Working hero last quarter, Aadesing Baria, was also recognized during the event for a Kaizen on ‘Driving Power Reduction through Waste Identification’. This project involved analysing the usage of high-mast illuminations in the operations area (Jetty, Wharf, Yard, Truck Parking area, Fertiliser shed etc.). Rationalising their use to avoid unwar ranted consumption of electricity, while maintaining the right balance between Operational and Safety requirements, delivered annual savings of approximately 5 Million INR (Approximately $60K).

India's high quality labour-intensive goods to get benefit from FTA with UK; though overall gains limited: GTRI NEW DELHI: India's high quality labour-intensive goods such as apparel, footwear, carpets and cars will benefit from the removal of import duties by the UK, under the proposed free trade agreement between the two countries, according to think tank GTRI. However, the overall gains for India will be limited because most of the goods from here are already entering the UK at low or zero tariffs (import or customs duties), the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. In 2022-23, India's merchandise exports to the UK were valued at USD 11.41 billion and out of this,

USD 6 billion worth of goods such as petroleum products, medicines, diamonds, machine parts, airplanes, and wooden furniture entered Britain at zero levy, it said. "The FTA is expected to have a limited impact on increasing these exports because over half of Indian products already enter the UK with low or no tariffs. The average duty on goods imported from India into the UK is 4.2 per cent," GTRI Co-Founder Ajay Srivastava said. However, there will be gains from reducing duties for Indian exports worth USD 5 billion and those items include textiles, apparel (shirts,

trousers, women's dresses, bed linen), footwear, carpets, cars, marine products, grapes, and mangoes. "These products face relatively low to moderate tariffs in the UK," he said. Citing examples, the think tank said that duties on yarn and fabric are 4 per cent, while tariffs on shirts, trousers, women's dresses, and bed linen range from 10 per cent to 12 per cent. Similarly, handbags and trunk cases attract 8 per cent tariffs, levies on footwear vary from 4 per cent to 16 per cent. These products will benefit from the FTA's tariff reductions by the UK.

Thirty-four agreements worth Rs 3.24 lakh crore signed on Day 1 of three-day GMIS – 2023 Cont’d. from Pg. 4

The signing of these pacts underlined the commitment of various stakeholders to transform India into a maritime powerhouse, the shipping ministry said. Besides Modi and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, the summit was also attended by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the two Ministers of State in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) — Sripad Naik and Shantanu Thakur, officials from the MoPSW, and other stakeholders. “Our Prime Minister’s vision for transformation for transportation has seen radical growth in the coastal and inland waterways,” Sonowal said in his speech. “Embarking on a transformative journey towards a brighter maritime future. The rise of ‘smart ports’ will revolutionize logistics through digitization and innovative models. Initiatives like ‘Digital India’ highlight our dedication to unlocking economic growth via digitization,” said Sonowal at a panel discussion. These ‘smart ports’ will utilise data, automation, IoT, and advanced analytics for safer, efficient resource management, he said and added that to stay technologically updated, “we

propose a digital centre of excellence (DCoE) for Major Ports, encouraging collaboration and cybersecurity focus”. Additionally, “Harit Sagar – the green port guidelines, he said, leads us to zero waste discharge, with an emphasis on reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle principles,” Sonowal stated. He also highlighted that initiatives have been taken towards interconnecting Major Ports by 2030. Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) and drone-based security reinforces the Government’s commitment to modernizing port operations, the minister said. The session emphasised aligning strategies with innovation outcomes, collaborative innovation for maritime capabilities, and skill development for seafarers. Furthermore, it underscored the potential of the blue economy and the need for skilled manpower. The “Special Session with Maharashtra” highlighted challenges in the state’s ports and transportation sectors, transportation connectivity improvements, and strategies to enhance industrial resilience. It also covered topics like tourism promotion, policy framework initiation, and attracting investments. “The sea is our highway to a world

of jobs, bridging local and global horizons. This summit is our harbour for collaboration, where ports like JSW and Dighi shine bright. With the Maharashtra Maritime Development P o l i c y, w e ’ v e s e t s a i l o n a comprehensive journey, welcoming industries to navigate and flourish in our waters,” said Sanjay Basonde, Minister of Ports, Maharashtra. “As we embrace technology, we must remember that these advancements are not just fancy gadgets; they are the gears that keep our maritime engine running smoothly. They ensure cargo moves seamlessly, vessels stay in top shape, and routes are optimised to save time and resources,” said Naik. These advancements are part of a broader national initiative ‘Digital India’, which not only establishes India as a technological powerhouse but also emphasizes that technology should serve the people, improving their lives and livelihoods, he added. The session further highlighted the integration of 5G technology in the Indian maritime sector. While on one side, 5G’s high-speed, low-latency connectivity enables real-time data exchange, facilitating remote monitoring and control of vessels and cargo handling, it also poses infrastructure and cybersecurity challenges.

Inland waterways transport is proving to be a game-changer: PM Modi NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has affirmed the importance of changing landscape of Inland Waterways in India. Speaking about an article written by Union Minister, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal regarding inland waterways transport, the Prime Minister talked of inland waterways emerging as an environment friendly and costeffective mode of transportation. He posted on X, “Union Minister, Shri @sarbanandsonwal, narrates how post 2014, inland waterways transport is proving to be a gamechanger as well as emerging as an environment friendly and costeffective mode of transportation.” In his article, the minister wrote that in January, Modi had flagged off the world’s longest river cruise from Varanasi to Dibrugarh — MV Ganga Vilas, unleashing the potential of India’s national waterways. “The 3,200-km, 51-day cruise allows tourists to experience our

heritage, culture, art, and urban landscape,” he wrote. India has an extensive network of inland waterways in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters and creeks. Freight transportation by waterways has been highly underutilised in the country as compared to developed countries. India’s hinterland connectivity is mainly based on road and rail with domestic waterways— both coastal shipping and inland waterways—playing a limited role. Waterways are found to be cost effective as well as an environmentally friendly means of transporting freight. The Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector has the potential to

supplement the over-burdened railways and congested roadways in the country. In addition to cargo movement, the IWT sector also provides a convenient function in related activities such as carriage of vehicles {on Roll-on-Roll-off (Ro-Ro) mode of cross ferry} and tourism. The National Waterways Act, 2016 passed by the Modi government has declared 111 inland waterways as ‘National Waterways’ (NWs) to promote shipping and navigation on them. The total length of NWs is 20,275 km spread across 24 States in the country. The state-of-the-art container terminal at Tuna-Tekra in Gujarat will cater to future trade demand from Northern, Western and Central India, connecting these regions to global markets. The project will see the construction of a mega-container terminal at Tuna-Tekra near the existing Deendayal Port, at a cost of Rs 4,243.64 crores through a Public Private Partnership (PPP).

No decision yet on India joining trade pillar of IPEF: Official NEW DELHI: The Government has not yet taken any decision on the issue of India joining the trade pillar of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a 14-member grouping, a senior official said. The IPEF was launched jointly by the US and other partner countries of the IndoPacific region on May 23 in Tokyo. The 14 IPEF partners represent 40 per cent of global GDP and 28 per cent of global goods and services trade. The framework is structured around four pillars relating to trade, supply chains, clean economy, and fair economy (issues like tax and anti-corruption). India has joined the three pillars except the trade part. The member countries are holding negotiations to sign separate agreements on these subjects. Talks are already concluded on the supply chain resilience and the process for domestic approval in India for this agreement is underway. The member nations are holding talks on clean

economy, and fair economy pillars under the sixth negotiating round, which is undergoing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from October 15 to 24. The Commerce Ministry, which is leading the talks, is holding Inter-Ministerial discussions on the option to join the trade pillar. "In the sixth round, text-based negotiations are happening on Pillar-III (clean economy) and Pillar-IV (fair economy). Most probably, talks on these two pillars will also be closed by October 25 and we look forward to agreeing to a substantial closure in the ministerial meeting which is scheduled to be held on 13-14 November at San Francisco," the official added. Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the US and Vietnam are members of the bloc. Govt extends restriction on sugar exports beyond Oct 31 New Delhi: Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on Wednesday announced that the restriction on export of all varieties of sugar has been extended beyond October 31, according to the notification. "This restriction is not applicable to sugar being exported to EU and USA under CXL and TRQ quota as per prescribed procedure in the respective public notices," said the notification. India, world's second-largest sugar exporter last year had placed sugar in a restricted category until October 31, 2023 'to prevent uncontrolled export of sugar and with a view to ensure sufficient availability of sugar for domestic consumption at a reasonable price.'

India allowed mills to export only 6.1 million tonnes of sugar during the current season ending on September 30, after letting them sell a record 11.1 million tonnes last season. Monsoon rains in the top sugarcane growing districts of the western state of Maharashtra and the southern state of Karnataka, which together account for more than half of India's total sugar output, have been as much as 50% below average so far this year, weather department data showed. India's sugar production could fall 3.3 per cent to 31.7 million tonnes in the 2023/24 season, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said. The last time India imposed a 20 per cent tax on sugar exports to curb overseas sales was back in 2016.

India, Gulf Cooperation Council free trade talks may start within a month NEW DELHI: India and the Gulf Cooperation Council are set to start talks on a free trade agreement as early as next month, now that both sides have appointed their chief negotiators, according to officials. While the intent to hold talks on an FTA had been announced in November last year, nothing concrete had been done so far due to a delay in appointing a chief negotiator from the GCC, Commerce Ministry officials said. “There was a change in the chief negotiator from the GCC side. However, the chief negotiator of the GCC has now been appointed and talks should begin soon,” an official said. With the terms of reference already exchanged and the chief negotiators appointed, the talks should be back on track, another senior official said. “There is a keenness on both sides to complete these negotiations as early as possible. We should be

holding the first round within one month,” the official added. The GCC is a union of six countries in the Gulf region – Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. Expediting talks A Framework Agreement on Economic Cooperation between India and the Gulf Cooperation Council was first signed in August 2004. The framework agreement provided that both parties would consider extending and liberalising trade relations and start discussions on the feasibility of an FTA between them. A c c o r d i n g l y, n e g o t i a t i o n s commenced with the GCC, with two rounds held in 2006 and 2008. The third round did not take place as the GCC deferred its negotiations with all countries and economic groups. During Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s discussions with Prime Minister N a r e n d r a M o d i i n S e p t e m b e r, 2023, it was agreed to expedite

the FTA negotiations. About GCC The Arab region is India’s largest trading partner bloc, with trade exceeding $240 billion during FY23. Trade with the GCC countries alone amounted to over $184 billion. Among economic regions, the GCC is also India’s top source of imports. Imports from GCC countries were $133 billion in FY23, up 20 percent on year, while exports were 16.7 percent higher at $51.3 billion. India’s exports to the GCC grew by 58.3 percent to $44 billion in FY22 from $27.8 billion in FY21. The UAE was India’s thirdlargest trading partner and Saudi Arabia the fourth-largest trading partner during FY23. India imports predominantly crude oil and natural gas from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It exports pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, metals, imitation jewellery, electrical machiner y, iron and steel, and chemicals to these countries.

India to spend nearly Rs 143 lakh cr on Infra till FY30: Crisil MUMBAI: India will spend nearly Rs 143 lakh crore on infrastructure between fiscals 2024 and 2030, more than twice the Rs 67 lakh crore spent in the past seven financial years starting 2017, rating agency Crisil said. Of the total, Rs 36.6 lakh crore will be green investments, marking a five times rise compared with the amount spent during fiscals 20172023, it added. “India’s infrastructure spending will double to Rs 143 lakh crore between fiscals 2024 and 2030, compared with 2017-2023,” Crisil said in its Infrastructure Yearbook 2023. Crisil Ltd managing director and CEO Amish Mehta said the agency expects India’s gross domestic product to grow at an average 6.7 per cent through fiscal 2031 to be the

fastest-expanding large economy. “Per capita income is seen rising from USD 2,500 now to USD 4,500 by fiscal 2031, creating a middle-income country,” he said, adding that this growth will be underpinned by massive all-round infrastructure development, with sharp focus on integrating sustainability.” While releasing ‘CRISIL Infrastructure Yearbook 2023’, which includes a unique national index CRISIL InfraInvex, Mehta said policy inter ventions and a conducive investment climate have aided the uptrend in the CRISIL InfraInvex scores across sectors. “Four of these — roads and highways, power transmission, renewable energy and ports — have an overall score of 7-plus (out of 10),

which underscores the pace of reforms and developments of the past few years,” he added. The rating agency noted that the next phase of infrastructure development will be marked by growth in the average ticket size of projects and a significant number of mega-scale projects. Appropriate and consistent policy and regulatory interventions and focus on timely execution build an attractive case for various stakeholders to accelerate investments across infrastructure sectors, Crisil said. The rating agency predicted that prominent sectors such as roads and power are expected to remain major contributors, while relatively nascent ones such as EVs, solar, wind, and hydrogen will pick up pace.

India exported 1.16 MT coal to neighbouring countries in FY23: Govt NEW DELHI: India exported 1.163 million tonnes of coal in 2022-23 to neighbouring countries, including Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, the Coal Ministry said. The coal was mainly exported to Nepal at 0.833 MT, followed by 0.245 MT to Bangladesh, 0.053 MT to Bhutan and 0.032 MT to

others, according to the latest Provisional Coal Statistics for FY23. "Although, there was short supply of coal in India compared to its demand and it had to resort to import of coal, India exported some quantity of coal to its neighbouring countries during 2022-23," it said.

As the primary source of commercial energy in India, coal accounts for half of our energy consumption and remains the dominant fuel for power generation due to its reliability compared to other renewable energy sources, the coal ministry said in a statement.
