Adani gets Green nod for Rs 45,000 cr Mundra Port capacity expansion

MUMBAI: Gautam Adani-led Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has received the key environmental and coastal regulation zone approval from the Centre to more than double the capacity of its flagship port located at Mundra to 514 million tonnes with an investment of Rs. 45,000 crore.

This could strengthen APSEZ's case while seeking a rollover from the G u j a r a t g o v e r n m e n t o n t h e concession period for the port when it ends in 2031 after a 30-year run.

The port, located in Gujarat's Kutch district, currently has a design capacity and environmental and coastal regulation zone approval for handling 225 mt of cargo a year, including 9.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

M u n d r a - I n d i a ' s b i g g e s t commercial port as well as the country's top container port by

volumes handled - managed 179.6 mt of cargo, including 7.4 million TEUs, in fiscal 2024, accounting for more than a fourth of all cargo volumes and over a third of container cargo in India.

It is expected to cross the 200 mt mark in cargo handling in FY25, APSEZ said in its volume guidance for the fiscal year that began in April. This will make it the country's first port to achieve this feat.

Globally, a capacity utilisation of 70% is considered the ideal level for p

congestion and productivity issues "At 70% capacity utilisation, the terminal works at full efficiency Above that, the efficiency drops, and delays start occurring," said a port industry insider

With the port growing in double digits over the past few years, putting

it on course to reach the full rated capacity soon, APSEZ had applied to the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) attached to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to raise the capacity by 289 mt to 514 mt as part of the expansion of the Waterfront Development Plan spread over 3,335 hectares at Mundra port The capacity expansion will cater to multi-purpose, liquid, gas and cryogenic cargo.

Mundra's expansion is critical for APSEZ's aim to become the world's biggest transport utility and port operator by 2030. Currently, it has a network of 15 ports/terminals in India's coastline with a capacity to handle some 627 mt of cargo a year It also runs the Haifa Port in Israel, a c o n t a i n e r t e r m i n a l a t t h e Dar es Salaam Port in Tanzania and is building a box terminal at the Colombo Port.

G7 Summit commits to promoting IndiaMiddle East-Europe Economic Corridor

APULIA: The Group of Seven i n d u s t r i a l i s e d n a t i o n s h a v e committed to promoting concrete infrastructure initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) in the G7 Summit Communique issued at the end of the three-day G7 Summit, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Modi attended the G7 Summit at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the host.

"We will further promote concrete G7 PGII (Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment) initiatives, flagship projects, and complementary initiatives to develop transformative economic corridors for quality infrastr ucture and investment, such as the deepening of

our coordination and financing for the Lobito Corridor, the Luzon Corridor, the Middle Corridor, and the IndiaMiddle East-Europe Economic Corridor, also building on the EU Global Gateway, the Great Green Wall Initiative, and the Mattei Plan for Africa launched by Italy," reads the communique.

B i l l e d a s a p a t h - b r e a k i n g initiative, the IMEC envisages a vast road, railroad and shipping network among Saudi Arabia, India, the United States and Europe to ensure integration among Asia, the Middle East and the West.

The IMEC is also seen as an initiative by like-minded nations to gain strategic influence in the face of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which has faced increasing criticism

over lack of transparency and disregard for sovereignty of the nations.

The BRI is a mega connectivity project that connects China with Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Russia and Europe.

The IMEC initiative was firmed up on the sidelines of the G20 Summit hosted by India in Delhi last year

About the Outreach session on Friday on the topic of Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa and the Mediterranean addressed by Modi, the Communique reads: "In a spirit of shared responsibility, we warmly welcome the participation of the Leaders of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, India, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritania, Tunisia, Turkiye, and the United Arab Emirates.

Major Ports’ cargo handling up 6% to 72 million tonnes in May

NEW DELHI: According to provisional and advance estimates data released by the Ministry of Ports, S h i p p i n g , a n d Wa t e r w a y s f o r April-May 2024-25, cargo handled at Major Ports increased by 4.02 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to 139 3 mt Whereas cargo handling at India’s major ports was up by 6 per cent in May to 72 million tonnes (mt), buoyed by a 7.3 per cent rise in overseas cargo handling, even as several global factors have constrained supply chains, especially in Asia.

While experts and reports suggest that the current congestion at several Asian ports has benefitted Indian ports in the form of spillover transshipment cargo reaching Indian ports, it remains unclear whether Major Ports have benefitted from this.

In comparison, cargo volumes grew by only 2 per cent in April, and around 4.4 per cent through 2023-24.

In May, crude oil and petroleum, oils and lubricants (POL) products accounted for 29 per cent of the total cargo volumes and registered a near

7 per cent growth. While foodgrains accounted for a smaller base, their movement increased nearly 270 per cent to 431,000 mt.

After a tumultuous 2023-24, Gujarat’s Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) is looking to stage a comeback as a Major Port with the highest cargo handling.

In May, the port’s overseas cargo volumes rose by nearly a fourth (23 per cent) to reach 11.8 mt. It also handled 18 per cent of total Major Port volumes in the same month.

May exports 3-month high at 9.1%; Trade decit at 7 month high

NEW DELHI: India’s goods exports rose 9.1% to a three-month high of $38.1 billion in May, outpacing imports that grew 7.7% on a higher base to $61.9 billion. The trade deficit zoomed to a seven-month high of $23.8 billion.

The rise in exports was led by engineering goods, electronics, drugs, pharma products and plastics, official data showed recently

Terming May as an “excellent” month for exports, commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said that the situation was looking more optimistic for trade this year, with even sectors such as textiles recording healthy growth after months of sluggishness

Easing inflation in developed economies is expected to lift demand and exports, he said. “We hope this trend continues this year… Also hope

that there are no more geopolitical conflicts and disruptions in major global shipping routes,” Barthwal said. “This will be a positive trend for Indian exports this fiscal year.”

The trade deficit was $19.1 billion in April and $22.5 billion in May 2023. The previous high in the trade gap was in October 2023 at $31.46 billion.

“Trade deficit per se I do not consider it as bad as long as you have FDI (foreign direct investment) flowing in, foreign exchange coming in and if you are balancing it through other means,” Barthwal said, pointing to growing services exports. “Then we should not unnecessarily be worried about the trade deficit in merchandise.”

Exports rose 9% month-onmonth from April.

The top export destinations were the US and the UAE whereas China

and Russia were the biggest import sources.

As per data released by the commerce and industry ministry, 20 of the key 30 export sectors reported growth while 16 imports expanded.

Gold imports shrank 9.7% on-year in May to $3.33 billion, hit by record high prices. “In sequential terms, 71% o f t h e e n l a r g e m e n t i n t h e merchandise trade deficit in May relative to April 2024 was driven by the net oil balance, with a sharp rise in volumes amidst some cooling in prices,” said ICRA chief economist Aditi Nayar.

Outbound shipments of petroleum products rose 15 75%, engineering goods 7.39% and electronic goods 22.97% but spices, gems and jewellery and marine products exports declined in May

May 2024 export gures portrays yet another positive growth momentum : FIEO President - Ashwani Kumar

N E W D E L H I :

Reacting to the May, 2024

m e r c h a n d i s e e x p o r t

n u m b e r s , F I E O

President, Mr Ashwani Kumar said that continuing with positive growth momentum for second month in a row during FY 2024-25 on the back of buoyant order bookings goes to show the resilience of the exports sector and Indian exporting community Goods exports of US$ 38 13 billion with an impressive growth of 9% compared to May 2023 is not only a good sign but also goes to show efforts and hard work, which the exporters are putting together The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war coupled with various major geo-political tensions including the Red Sea crisis and Israel-Hamas conflict has also made the international trade scenario m u c h t o u g h e r f o r t h e I n d i a n exporters, added Mr Kumar We further expect exports to show b e t t e r g r o w t h n u m b e r s w i t h improved demand coming in from the European Union, UK, West Asia and the US, which has given boost to the order bookings by over 10 % and has come as sign of recovery for labour-intensive sectors of exports

FIEO Chief said that key sectors which have shown positive growth during the month of May 2024, include e l e c t r o n i c g o o d s , d r u g s &

pharmaceuticals, organic & inorganic chemicals, engineering goods, petroleum products, plastics & linoleum, cotton yarn/fabs./madeups, handloom products etc , manm a d e y a r n / f a b s . / m a d e - u p s , handloom products etc , cereal preparations & miscellaneous processed items, meat, dairy & poultry products, mica, coal & other ores, minerals including processed minerals, RMG of all textiles, tea, coffee, rice, tobacco, carpet and handicrafts, oil seeds and fruits & vegetables.

Our exports in all our top ten markets (US, UAE, Netherland, UK, China, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Germany and France) were positive and many of them recorded a healthy double-digit growth.

Month-on-month imports during May 2024 was US$ 61.91 billion with growth of 7.7 percent, increasing the trade deficit for the month to US$ 23.78 billion, which in itself is not a good sign for the economy, said Mr Ashwani Kumar. However, a negative trade balance is not always bad, if a country is importing raw materials or intermediary products to boost manufacturing and exports, added FIEO President.

Overall exports of (goods and services) increased to US$ 73.12 billion during April-May FY 2024-25

with a growth of 5 1 percent compared to April-May FY 2023-24 while o v e r a l l imports saw a n 8 8 9 % i n c r e a s e t o U S D 1 1 6 billion. He also a d d e d t h a t though there is increase in imports during AprilMay 2024 mainly due to petroleum products, gold, silver, electronic goods, pulses and vegetable oil but the increase in petroleum products, gold and silver import will lead to increase in exports of petroleum products and gems & jewellery with a time lag.

FIEO President, Mr Ashwani Kumar further reiterated that the need of the hour is to take steps on the liquidity front with deeper interest subvention support and continuation of interest equalisation scheme Besides, addressing the Middle East geopolitical situation, Red Sea crisis challenges by ensuring availability of marine insurance and rationale increase in freight charges The sector also needs easy & low cost of credit, marketing support and conclusion of some of the key FTAs with UK, Peru and Oman soon.
