DP World to bolster handling capacity with 3 million TEU this year
DUBAI: The Dubai-based port operator DP World expects to add approximately 3 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of new container handling capacity by the end of the year
The company currently manages approximately 9% of the world’s handling capacity, putting it among the top five global port operators The expansions will take its total gross capacity to 93.6 million TEUs.
Key expansions will be completed this year in Caucedo (Dominican Republic), including an additional 1.2million TEU, Yarimca (Türkiye) projected an additional 579,000 TEU, Sokhna (Egypt) adding 500,000 TEU, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) with an additional 200,000 TEU, among other key markets.
Supply chain advisors, Drewry, forecast global container throughput will grow to 932 million TEU by 2025, up from 858 million TEU in 2021. The firm’s capacity expansion plans come at a vital time with inflation, increased cost of living and geopolitical uncertainties causing concern about global trade and fuelling demand for faster, more resilient supply chain solutions.
According to DP World’s recent Trade in Transition 2023 report, businesses are still prioritising growth through market expansion, citing the key drivers of export growth in 2023 to be growing demand and expansion of operations into new markets. The report also revealed the use of the technology as the top reason executives remain optimistic about global trade.
“We are committed to investing in our infrastructure to meet the growing demand for trade These capacity additions will further strengthen our position as a leading global supply chain solutions provider connecting
economies, businesses and consumers around the world,” Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said
“We have to take a longer-term view of global economics, looking at how demand will change and how we can meet it in the most efficient way Our medium-term target is to reach 100 million TEU a year, subject to demand,” Tiemen Meester, COO Ports & Terminals, DP World, said.
Alongside the physical expansion, the projects also focus on digitalisation – implementing new technology and modern terminal operating systems, which will further increase capacity by automating and streamlining operations within each port.
By introducing automated equipment and smarter ways of working, DP World expects to significantly boost its handling capacity within the same physical footprint. Furthermore, automised equipment powered by electricity replaces fossil fuelled equipment, thus cutting CO2 emissions for DP World and its clients drastically
In March, DP World announced the first commercial use of its BOXBAY high-bay storage system at the Pusan Newport Corporation (PNC) terminal in South Korea. DP World has a 66% stake in PNC, which has a capacity of 5.3 million TEUs. The addition of BOXBAY’s technology is expected to enable PNC to boost its efficiency even further
DP World is also set to commence operations at Indonesia’s 600,000 TEU Belawan New Container Terminal (BNCT) in North Sumatra by the end of the year DP World wants to increase BNCT’s capacity to 1.4 million TEUs and attract more direct calls, reducing reliance on regional hub ports, and strengthening its position as a major trade and logistics gateway in the Malacca Strait.

Adani Ports advocates for minimum 50 years of concession period in PPP projects
N E W D E L H I : A d a n i P o r t s a n d
Special Economic
Z o n e ( S E Z ) o n
Monday emphasised
t h e n e e d f o r a n “extended” concession period of at least 50 years and a comprehensive dispute resolution mechanism in the PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) model in infrastructure projects.
T h e s u g g e s t i o n s m a d e b y Adani Ports and SEZ CEO (Ports) Mr. Subrat Tripathy at the roadshow of the 3rd Global Maritime India Summit 2023 here were in sync with the ongoing discussions aimed at bolstering India’s m a r i t i m e i n f r a s t r u c t u r e a n d a t t r a c t i n g s i g n i f i c a n t g l o b a l investments. “I want to highlight to the
Minister and the offices of the Ministry of Shipping for both Shipping and that a 30-year concession period may not be adequate. The new concession regime already recognises the ability to roll over, but I believe that a 50-year concession period would be more beneficial,” Tripathy said.
“This would provide a greater incentive for investors to come forward and ensure that adequate revenues are met,” he added “It would also help mitigate the risk of the capital expenditure cycle being threatened towards the end of a concession period,” Tripathy said in his address. He lauded the West Bengal government’s initiative in providing a 99-year concession period for the development of the Tajpur deep sea port in the state. Adani Port has won
the contract to build and operate the port in the state Tripathy also underscored the significance of incorporating a robust dispute resolution mechanism and exit policies within the concession agreements.
Such provisions would create an atmosphere of transparency and reliability, fostering investor trust, he said Mr Subrat Tripathy, said that the company remains committed to the Tajpur project and was waiting for a Letter of Agreement from the West Bengal government before it can proceed with feasibility studies and environmental clearances The State Government needs to get security and some other clearances before it could award the final agreement.

Commerce Secretary says no proposal to put import curbs
on more electronic goods
NEW DELHI: Commerce Secretary
Mr. Sunil Barthwal recently said that at present there is no proposal to impose import restrictions on more electronic goods.
There is a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics and mobile manufacturing, Barthwal said.
“We are monitoring our imports
We are also looking that there should
not be undue dependence on any particular country. We want to diversify both our exports as well as our imports,” said the Commerce Secretary
“We do not want ourselves to be dependent upon very few sources of imports…So what we are doing, we are evaluating the position in consultation with various ministries. We are looking at trends, but there is nothing in the offing, as of now,” he also said.
To boost domestic manufacturing of electronic goods and to reduce imports f r o m n a t i o n s l i k e C h i n a , t h e Government has imposed import curbs on laptops, personal computers and certain more electronic devices from November 1.
“As and when we feel that…we will do it in consultation with the ministries. But currently, there is no such move,” the Secretary added.

Sluggish Global demand with growth contraction and softening of commodity prices has led to continuous decline in exports: FIEO
NEW DELHI: Responding to the overall July export figures of USD 59 43 billion(withaminordeclineof5 06percent) compared to July 2022, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said that sluggish global demand specially in economies like China and EU coupled with the contraction in growth has led to the continuous decline in exports during the recent months Manufacturing across the Euro Zone and the US has contracted due to persistent policy tightening measures by both the US Fed and the European Central Bank squeezing finances with also Britain's pace of decline steepening as optimism faded, added Dr A Sakthivel Further, with Asian economies showing mixed bags, economies across the continent struggled to maintain the momentum. The softening of the commodity prices have also pulled downvalue-wiseexports Alargenumberof countries are showing such decline including China whose exports also contracted almost similarly in July 2023
Oneofthemainkeyreasonsformoderating pace of growth in merchandise exports significantly in 2023 has been because of ongoing geopolitical tensions, disruption in global supply chain due to Russia-Ukraine war, monetarytighteningandrecessionary fears, which has continuously led to a fall in consumer spendings across the globe especially in advanced economies, reiteratedFIEOPresident
FIEO Chief added that we are of the view that exports will start showing better growth numbers, as things are expected to improve in the next few months with fresh orders or order bookings for the festival and New Year season beginning to come.
11 out of 30 key products sectors, which have shown positive growth during the month of July 2023, include ceramic products & glassware,
i c g o o d s , d r u g s & pharmaceuticals, iron ore, fruits & vegetables, oil seeds, oil meals, cotton
, cereal preparations & miscellaneous processed items, rice
FIEO Chief said that though the decline in imports is a good sign for the country, however, that has also led to de-growth in our key export sectors like petroleum products, gems & jewellery, organic & inorganic chemicals etc.
FIEO President further reiterated that the need of the hour is to provide further momentum to the economy through easy and low cost of credit to the MSMEs, marketing support for promoting Brand India products and services globally and GST exemption on Freight on exports Besides, the interest equalisation support across all sectors of export and providing further extension to the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme by one more year till March 31, 2024, will provide much needed cushion during such tough and challenging times.
