Maersk warns Yantian port congestion a ‘much bigger disruption’ than Suez Canal closure COPENHAGEN: The world’s largest container line Maersk says that congestion and delays at Yantian port in South China are a much bigger disruption to its operations than the Ever Given blocking the Suez Canal in March this year. Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) has experienced significant disruption due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the port area and prevention and restriction measures put in place as a result. Ditlev Blicher, Maersk Asia Pacic Managing Director told an online media briefing that Yantian port was currently operating at around 40% of capacity and that, “We’re expecting that to continue for the next month with significant delays for vessels to be able to berth.” Putting the magnitude of the issue at Yantian port is causing container shipping into sharp perspective Vincent Clerc, AP Moller-Maersk’s CEO of Ocean & Logistics, stated: “I would say this for us is a much bigger disruption than the Ever Given getting stuck in the Suez Canal for some days because of the duration and the importance of Yantian as a gateway.” The blockage of the Suez Canal only lasted for six days, while the situation in Yantian has already lasted several weeks with no end in sight for the coming weeks either. The port handles around 13.5 mn TEU a year or about 36,400 teu a day, making a key gateway port on a global scale. “Right now, we have vessel delays of up to 16 days outside Yantian which is of course going to cause significant ripple
effect across the network from a reliability perspective,” Clerc explained. With charter rates for containerships at record levels due to an almost complete lack of available tonnage the lengthy delays in vessels schedules will see lines such as Maersk being forced cut sailings due to reduced available capacity. “We will see lost sailings as a result of these delays which will only compound the congestion that we’re seeing,” Clerc stated. “That will create a hole basically in our ability to provide weekly services to customers with the capacity that they need. What we are looking at right now is how much cargo can we divert? How much can we get to other ports in the Pearl River Delta. How can we try to keep the customers as immune as possible for the changes? But I won’t beat around the bush when it’s happening in a port as significant as Yantian this will have significant ripple effects.” Redirecting cargo to other ports in the Pearl River Delta region comes with its own challenges. Blicher explained: “In the hinterland we also have significant restrictions around land transport operations as we’re directing our clients to use other ports in the market.” The other ports are experiencing a shortage of equipment, specifically 40-foot and 44-foot hi-cube containers that are preferred by many customers. “We are also encouraging our clients to be open to utilize different types of equipment. Be open to use 20-foot containers instead of just 40-foot containers as routing changes puts pressure on equipment availability in those ports,” he said.

World has to decouple trade & green goals: Piyush Goyal at UN NEW DELHI: Hoping that the developed countries will not use the interplay of trade and climate challenge “too much”, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently said the world should decouple trade policy and its green goals. He also hoped that credit rating agencies and bodies like the IMF “which kind of dictate” the financial architecture of the world do not land up being unfairly harsh on the developing and lessdeveloped countries as this is a time to become compassionate, more liberal and
supportive to these nations. “We do hope that the developed world will not use the inter-play of trade and climate challenge too much because I think trade should allow all countries to prosper. “It should not create trade barriers which will ultimately become a hindrance to taking prosperity to the poorer, lesser developed countries,” he said. Goyal added: “I do believe that we have to decouple trade policy and our green goals”.
Rather, he said, the UN and the other multilateral agencies like the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) should focus on getting the world together to fulfil their commitments around climate change. The minister added that there should be differentiated responsibilities when it comes to the developing world or the lessdeveloped countries, as they have to fulfil their commitments which they made in Paris particularly relating to capital, and technology.

Shipping Industry agrees action on R&D investment and Trade Digitisation LONDON: As world leaders meet in Cornwall, England, for the G7, the first ever meeting of the equivalent maritime bodies, titled M7, took place recently, organised by the UK Chamber of Shipping. Delegates from the shipowner associations of the G7, plus those from Australia, India, South Africa and South Korea, were joined by the Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, Chief Executive and Secretar y General of BIMCO and a representative from ECSA. There was universal agreement that more investment is needed from governments and industry to develop the technologies for a cleaner and greener shipping industry and that the G7 governments should be urged to back the shipping industry’s proposed $5bn R&D decarbonisation fund. Delegates also agreed that more
work was needed to help develop digital documentation to facilitate an increase in global trade as the world recovers from Covid-19. The crew change crisis was discussed, and the extraordinary work seafarers have done over the past 15 months supporting global trade under extremely challenging conditions was noted. The meeting called for governments of the G7 to follow the lead of the United States, Canada and other countries in prioritising vaccinations for seafarers. UK Chamber of Shipping President and Chair of the meeting, John Denholm said: “Meeting for the first time, the M7 brought together the shipowning organisations of the G7, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States as well as those invited to the G7 event from Australia, India, South
Africa and South Korea. The meeting discussed improving trade through digital documentation and the need for governments and industry to invest more in green research and development projects and the important role that seafarers were playing in keeping trade flowing through the Covid pandemic. “The meeting noted the magnificent job that their seafarers had been doing through the pandemic and urged governments to make vaccines available to seafarers. It also fully supported the need to decarbonise and agreed that if the industry is to meet its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2050, large-scale investment in research and development is necessary as without this we simply will not have the technologies needed for the greener, cleaner shipping industry that we all want.”
Bangladesh extends border closure with India till June 30 due to Covid-19 DHAKA: Bangladesh recently extended border closure with India till June 30 as the COVID-19 situation in neighbouring districts of the country continued to deteriorate. The decision for extending the closure of border areas was taken during an inter-ministerial meeting on
June 13, a top official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Dhaka Tribune. A gazette notification to this end will soon be published, the official said, requesting anonymity. Earlier on April 26, Bangladesh shut down its border with India for two weeks, which was later extended
twice - on May 8 and then on May 29 in light of the severe crisis in India due to the second wave of the pandemic. However, Bangladeshi nationals with a valid visa of 15 days or less will be allowed to return home subject to a 14-day compulsor y quarantine, reported Dhaka Tribune.

NMPT handles large parcel size vessel MV SSL Brahmaputra Shreyas Shipping was the vessel operator and Amogha Shipping, Mangaluru, was representing it as the local agent
M A N G A L O R E : New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled the MV SSL Brahmaputra – a largest parcel size container vessel — at the port on Tuesday. A statement by NMPT said that this is the largest parcel size container vessel handled at the port in terms of containers as well as size. The vessel is of 260-meter length overall with 32.35-meter beam and dead weight tonnage of 50,900 tonnes. The vessel arrived laden with 1,521 TEU
(twenty-foot equivalent) containers with 25,864.40 tonnes of raw cashew nuts. It has a scheduled export plan of 300 TEUs. NMPT statement said that Shreyas Shipping was the vessel operator and Amogha Shipping, Mangalur u, was representing it as the local agent. It may be mentioned here that the container traffic at NMPT increased from less than 2,000 TEUs in 2000 to 1.5 lakh TEUS in 2020-21. So far, these containers were handled at various general cargo berths of the port. Considering the increase in container
handling, NMPT awarded the work of mechanisation of container handling at deep-draft berth (no. 14) to Mangalore Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (of JSW) on PPP model. The statement said this is expected to foster the growth of container traffic at the port in the coming years. Expressing happiness over the record handling of a large container vessels, AV Ramana, Chairman of NMPT, said the port’s multidimensional initiatives such as online gate admittance, improved storage facilities, better service and costeffective measures made this happen.
Focus on exports and quality manufacturing: Niti Aayog NEW DELHI: NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has said that path to India’s economic recovery post the Covid-29 pandemic lies in attempting to focus on capturing the export markets, as the world is flush with liquidity due to the various packages put in by various countries, and also push for consumer demand as the economy opens up. Mr. Kant said that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report found India’s Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, has benefited almost 21 per cent of the nation’s population and improved their quality of life. He said that the UNDP report found the ADP acted as a “catalyst for expediting development” that brought about “major changes” in sectors such as health care, nutrition, and education. When asked about the impact of coronavirus outbreak on Indian economy and path to its recovery, he said, “India is seeing today is a huge improvement in its exports. So, we should look at the global market, the world is awash with liquidity, because of the different packages which different countries have put in so there’s a lot of money available across the world. “We should try and focus and capture the export markets and fourthly, I think there’s a need to push for consumer demand as the economy opens up, providing greater liquidity spreading free ration as the Prime Minister has done till Diwali, well all this will help the economy to boost up in due course,” the Niti Ayog CEO said. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra
Modi had announced free rations under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till Diwali this year. It will cover 80 crore poor who will be provided with free ration under the scheme amid lockdowns and pandemic. Kant said the country can use the Covid pandemic as an opportunity to attact the world’s best manufacturers. “I think it’s a huge opportunity. COVID has accelerated the change, global supply chains will get relocated, there will be a China plus one strategy for manufacturing, a lot of foreign direct investment (FDI) has come into India and it’s an opportunity for us to attract best manufacturers from all the world,” Kant said. He also encouraged Indian companies to think big and to produce at global scale and size in order to penetrate global markets instead of focussing on domestic demand. “There is a big market outside this huge amount of liquidity right now. And what you get in the export market is far more than what you get in the domestic market and therefore size and scale. Use the strength of your domestic market to penetrate global markets. If you are at that size and scale, then your cost of production will fall. And therefore, India will become highly competitive in the global market. And that is the objective, the production linked incentive scheme,” Kant told. Advising the Indian business sector, Kant said that COVID has disrupted business in a big way but it has also provided an opportunity to maximise the use of technology to leapfrog across areas and make India the easiest place to do
business. “This is also an opportunity to make ourselves easy and simple, do away with a lot of rules, regulation that we built up over the years, make India the simplest and the easiest place to do business, use technology, and I think this is also an opportunity to get into cutting edge areas of growth. This is an opportunity to use technology to leapfrog across a whole range of areas, we should use new technology to leapfrog,” Kant said. He said that he has great belief on the resurgence of Indian economy and advocated for mass vaccination at great pace. “I’m a great believer that for this economy, we need to vaccinate fast which we are doing now in a very big way, the government has ordered a lot of vaccines to come in in the subsequent months, so I quite agree with the government approach that by December we should have vaccinated the entire population,” said Kant. He also informed that the government has put a lot of focus on infrastructure. “ We ’ v e c r e a t e d t h e N a t i o n a l Infrastructure pipeline, huge emphasis on that and India is seeing huge improvement in its exports.” Talking about the initial steps for Indian economy on future roadmap post pandemic, Kant said that it needs to be watchful as nature of the virus is pretty unknown. “Countries which have been very adventurous to totally opened out, then get back and start closing this has been the strict trend across all over look at what is happening in UK now,” said Kant.

Indian Army successfully conducts Rail trials on DFC NEW DELHI: The recently developed “Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC)” by the Indian Railways provides faster movement of freight across the Country. The Indian Army on Monday (14 June 2021), conducted a successful trial by moving a military train loaded with vehicles and equipment from New Rewari to New Phulera validating the efficacy of the DFC. The intricate and synchronised coordination by the Indian Army with Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd (DFCCIL) and Indian
Railways will significantly enhance the mobilisation capability of the Armed Forces. These trials were part of the “Whole of the Nation Approach” for optimising national resources and achieve seamless synergy among various ministries and departments. Interactions by the Indian Army with all stakeholders including DFCCIL & Indian Railways will now assist in leveraging the DFC and allied infrastructure into the mobilisation matrix of Armed Forces. Development of
infrastructure at certain locations to support mobilisation and trials to validate move of defence owned rolling stock on Roll On-Roll Off (RO-RO) service is being formalised and modalities are being evolved. These trials herald the first step in this process to pave the way for enhancing the operational readiness of Armed Forces. This initiative would set in place processes to ensure that military requirements are dovetailed in the national infrastructure development at the planning stage itself.
SIMA appeals to FM to withdraw cotton import duty CHENNAI: Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) chairman Ashwin Chandran recently requested finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to withdraw both the basic customs duty (BCD) and the agriculture infrastructure development cess (AIDC) levied on cotton to create a level-playing field on the raw material front for the Indian textile and apparel industry. The announcement of 5 per cent BCD and 5 per cent AIDC with applicable cess on the import of cotton in the 2021-22 budget has a severe detrimental impact on the value-added segments and erodes the competitiveness of the country ’s garments and home textile exporters, SIMA said.
The import duty will not benefit Indian cotton farmers owing to the negligible volume of imports and the non-availability of such speciality cotton varieties in India, SIMA said. “The levy of these import duties is a major blow to the Indian cotton textiles industry, which was just recovering from the losses suffered during the pandemic and lockdowns last year,” Chandran wrote. A similar import duty of 10 per cent BCD, 4 per cent additional customs duty and 3 per cent education cess imposed during 2007-08 had a severe impact on I n d i a n s p i n n i n g i n d u s t r y, a n d t h e government withdrew that after understanding the ill effects, Chandran wrote.
Bt technology covers over 95 per cent of the area under cotton and has made India a cotton surplus country, but only in the medium and long staple cotton varieties, SIMA said. Fo r e x t r a - l o n g s t a p l e ( E L S ) , contamination-free and sustainable cotton, the industry depends on imports to produce high value-added products. The import of such cotton accounts for only 4 per cent of the annual cotton requirement in India, SIMA said. He said it has taken over a decade for the Indian textile industry to build up the market share in these segments, and with the levy of cotton import duty, India will lose its competitiveness and market share to rivals like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Vietnam.
Retail lobby in USA seeks Biden’s help for port congestion WASHINGTON: The National Retail Federation (NRF) has sent a letter to the White House asking to meet with the United States President Biden and other top administration officials regarding the challenges retailers are facing from the ongoing supply chain disruptions, which have caused severe congestion at the US ports. “We would like an opportunity to discuss the impact these issues are having on the nation’s retailers, our workers and our customers, as well as potential solutions to address current and future disruptions,” said NRF President and CEO, Matthew Shay, in the letter. Matthew Shay explained, “The supply chain disruption issues, especially the congestion affecting our key maritime
ports, are causing significant challenges for America’s retailers. The congestion issues have not only added days and weeks to our supply chains but have led to inventory shortages impacting our ability to serve our customers. In addition, these delays have added significant transportation and warehousing costs for retailers.” As the nation’s largest private-sector employer, retailers depend on US ports and other transportation infrastructure to deliver billions of dollars’ worth of goods and products to consumers every day, according to an announcement. Last week, NRF revised its annual retail sales forecast to grow between 10.513.5% to more than US$4.44 trillion in 2021 as the economic recovery accelerates.
Although consumer demand continues to grow, evidenced by imports during the latest months at the largest US retail container ports, such as the ports of Long Beach, Charleston and New York & New Jersey, the supply chain challenges remain significant. In a recent survey of NRF member companies on the congestion situation, over 97% of retailers surveyed say they have been impacted by port and shipping delays. “In many instances, retailers will absorb these costs and not pass them along to consumers. However, many smaller retailers may have no choice but to pass along these costs, especially as they face other challenges with reopening their businesses,” pointed out Shay.
Indian Warehousing and Logistics sector on better progress path : Cushman & Wakeeld Report CHENNAI: Indian cities are among the many least costly markets by way of leases for warehousing and logistic facility, in response to a report by worldwide property advisor Cushman & Wakefield. COVID-19 and the following provide chain disruptions coupled with continued progress in e-commerce have put this sector firmly on the centre stage. Given that the market, until date, has been largely unorganized, the scope for progress in
giant, funding grade warehousing developments stays large. Demand has been sturdy during the last 18-24 months with leases firming up throughout main Tier I market. Going ahead, market exercise will likely be pushed by giant e-commerce, 3PL gamers along with FMCG, retail, shopper electronics and Pharma / healthcare sectors. Consumers throughout the nation have rapidly embraced online purchasing and that is already reflecting in rising want for provide chain effectivity and rising demand for big warehouses close to peripheries in addition to smaller in-city distribution centres. Industrial rents have proven regular progress within the year-to-date in key Indian and South East Asian markets the place rents in Delhi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kolkata, Jakarta and Hanoi have all elevated by over 2.5%. Rents have been held broadly flat in Australia whereas they’ve seen a
slight uptick of two% within the Chinese logistics market, as a result of boosted demand from on-line purchasing absorbing a number of the emptiness. Out of the 34 key markets lined inside Asia Pacific, 15 are thought-about landlord-favorable with six being tenant favorable and the remaining 13 in impartial territory. The establishment has largely been maintained year-to-date, with solely Singapore displaying any important change to changing into extra tenant pleasant, although that is restricted to sure components of the economic market. Over the medium to long run, aggressive leases and broader favorable tendencies such because the rising center class, speedy urbanization and coverage assist from the federal government will improve the aggressive edge and funding potential of the Indian warehousing and logistics sector.

Order book position of Exporters healthy, exports growth trend to continue: FIEO Cont’d. from Pg. 4 “Since the order book position of exporters is extremely good, we expect that the trend will continue, may be with occasional ups and downs due to the second or third wave of pandemic. However, the growth story will continue to be a mixed one as both value added exports and raw material exports will contribute to our export basket,” it added. India’s merchandise exports in May 2021 stood at USD 32.21 billion, an increase of 67.39 per cent over USD 19.24 billion in May 2020 and 7.93 per cent over USD 29.85 billion in May 2019. Further it said that India’s export growth in food and agriculture sectors has been remarkable and many of the products including processed ones have shown encouraging trend in 2020 despite logistics challenges and extraordinary hike in freight rates. At the same time, it said, the buoyancy in agriculture commodities also helped India’s agriculture exports. “We need to build the momentum particularly as China’s image has taken a dent subsequent to the pandemic and many
countries are reluctant to imports from China particularly the edible products,” the federation said. Similarly, India has done well in exports of metals during 2020. “However, raw material exports have been a double-edge sword. While such exports do add to our export numbers and also generate economic activity, they also put pressure on logistics and deprive the country of value-added exports,” the study said. It added that the government has to play an extremely delicate role to strike a balance between the varying interests of the two. There have been cases where the same raw material has been exported from the country and then imported back, putting pressure on logistics besides remitting avoidable freight charges, it said. “A logical solution could be to attract investment into the value added segment so that the raw-material is processed in the country and only intermediate or the final product so manufactured is exported,” it said.
