Exports bounce back to last year’s levels Exports in May shrank 36.47% to $19.05 billion against a 60% contraction in April, which was largely due to overseas orders' cancellation NEW DELHI: The pace of contraction of India's exports slowed in May as relaxations in the lockdown to contain the Covid-19 pandemic led to some pick up in economic activity.

The Government expects the trend to improve in June on the back of some early indications.

Exports in May shrank 36.47% to $19.05 billion against a 60% contraction in April, which was largely due to overseas

orders' cancellation.

Trade deficit narrowed to $3.15 billion in May as the contraction in imports was sharper. The previous low for trade deficit was March 2016 when it was $2.18 billion.

Merchandise exports recovered faster than imports but among major items of export, only rice, spices, iron ore, drugs and pharmaceuticals recorded positive growth in May. Cont’d Pg. 17

MARSEILLE: CEVA Logistics has acquired a c o n t r o l l i n g shareholding in AMI Worldwide, a third-party logistics provider with an extensive network in East and Southern Africa, which has more than 100 years of expertise in the region.

The AMI Worldwide office network in 12 countries in East and Southern Africa and its almost 1,000 employees will join the CEVA global network, effective July 1. They will provide a platform for further investment and expansion throughout the Cont’d Pg. 6 continent.

HUHP welcomes Dubai based Transworld Group as latest participant in an exquisite Pool for Handysize Bulk Carriers • Transworld Group Dubai joining the Hanseatic Unity Handysize Pool with two Bulk Carriers.

With this fresh addition HUHP will be handling a total fleet of 24 Handysize between 32,000 to 40,000 DWT with an average age of 5 years and a combined DWT of just below 1 Million tons. This makes HUHP one of the leading Pools for Eco Modern Handysize Vessels in today’s market.

The TBC Princess‘ first employment will be a combination cargo of Steels and Grains loading in Argentina and Brazil destined for the US Gulf with a duration of around 50 days. TBC Prestige is currently discharging a cargo of Sugar at London and will join the Pool when entering into the next employment fixed by HUHP. Established already in 1977, today Transworld Group’s activities go far beyond those in dry bulk, with 40 offices around the globe being involved in all kinds of maritime and logistics services.

HUHP is a joint venture between Reederei NORD GmbH and Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG set up in July 2018.

The HUHP provides exclusive pool services for vessels in the Handysize segment of their founding partners as well as other third-party customers.

Largest Container ship in the World calls on Port of Antwerp ANTWERP: The container ship HMM Algeciras arrived at the Port of Antwerp last night to load and unload containers at the North Sea Terminal of container handler PSA. It is the newest and largest container ship in the world.

The ship can carry 23,964 TEU (20-foot containers). The Korean ship was delivered on 24 April by the shipyard Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering’s Okpo. It is 400 metres long, 61 metres wide and has 23 crew members. The ship is from Yantian (China) and departs for London on Saturday 13 June at 5:30am.

Port of Rotterdam eyeing investment opportunities in India ROTTERDAM: The Port of Rotterdam is eyeing opportunities in India and the country’s Sagarmala Programme to develop the performance of its logistics sector.

Marc Aartsen, Program Manager International Port Projects, Port of Rotterdam, told an online media briefing: “The capacity of Indian ports needs to improve and that is also recognised by the Government of India. We see a lot of potential in the Indian market and we have assigned two Rotterdam representatives in India.

India one of a small number of locations that the port has overseas representatives along with China, Indonesia, Russia and few places in Europe. In October 2019 two Memorandums of Understanding were signed by the Port of Rotterdam Authority – one with the Maharashtra Maritime Board and one with the state government of Kerala.

The Port of Rotterdam International currently participates as a shareholder in two overseas port projects – one in Sohar, Oman, and the other Pecem in Brazil.

The port looked at India in the mid-2000’s, however, nothing ever came to fruition. However, with India’s current government and the Sagarmala Project to invest in both new and existing ports interest from the Port of Rotterdam has been rekindled.

“We are certainly interested in looking into interesting investment projects,” Aartsen said, without giving any specific investment targets. Given the long-term nature of port investment the current Covid-19 pandemic does not necessarily impact plans the company might have in India.

“We always see these kind of developments in the long-term so we are not very much scared off by economic setback for the short term as these decision making are going to invest somewhere take a long time especially if you are talking about greenfield locations,” he explained.

CEVA Logistics is integrating three CMA CGM Inland Services facilities and opening its own new operations Three CMA CGM Inland Services (CCIS) facilities are also joining CEVA’s network in Mali, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast. These intermodal sites provide a launch platform for the company’s freight management ambitions. They offer freight forwarding services in addition to their full range of inland solutions related to container fleet management and ocean freight value-added services such as “Reefer” (refrigerated container) management services, stuffing and de-stuffing of containers, dry port and container depot functions. These entities keep their close relationship with CEVA’s parent company, the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, which enjoys a historically strong continental presence.

India had announced a three-week nationwide lockdown on March 25, which was extended four times with

some relaxations and finally lifted from June 1.

Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has said that exports in the first week of June are at a par with what they were in June 1-7, 2019 and that he expects the contraction to narrow to 8-10% in June. Exports in June 1-7 stood at $4.94 billion as against $5.03 billion in the yearago period, a marginal dip of about 0.76%.

"Export data reveal the process of the global economy slowly opening up," said Saugata Bhattacharya, Chief Economist

at Axis Bank. "Indian exporters began operations late April onwards. However, the demand for many products such as handicrafts and leather was low, even if labour in India was available."

"There is a drastic arrest in fall of exports in the month against April 2020.

And this has been because of the partial start of businesses and business/order enquiries from the markets like the US and EU," said Sharad Kumar Saraf, president, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).

AP Govt approves Ramayapatnam port DPR for phase-I work HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government recently approved a detailed project report (DPR) of the Ramayapatnam Port in Prakasam district of the state to take up the first phase of the work at a cost of Rs 3,736 crore in 36 months.

Industries Minister M Goutham Reddy said the state government would provide Rs 100 crore for land acquisition.

“We approved the DPR prepared by infrastructure consultancy and engineering company – RITES – towards the development of the port and to take up phase-I work at a cost of Rs 3,736 crore in 36 months,” he said in a tweet.

The port is expected to handle granite and tobacco exports from Prakasam and neighbouring Guntur districts respectively.

Currently, granite and tobacco industries are dependent on Krishnapatnam and Chennai ports.

The previous TDP government had given nod for the port proposal and issued orders allotting 2,500 acres of land for the project. The then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had laid the foundation stone for the initiative.

However due to 2019 polls, the work came to a halt.

China’s economic recovery to accelerate: experts BEIJING: China’s economy is expected to revive in the second half of this year as the country retains huge market potential and ample policy room, experts said.

It takes time for major economic indicators to fully recover, but positive signs like narrowing power-use decline have surfaced, said Liu Huan, a counselor with the State Council, China’s cabinet.

The country’s economy will restore in the second quarter as COVID-19 wanes, and see robust growth from the third quarter onwards, he forecasted.

Wang called for measures to focus on increasing high-quality products and ser vices, as well as stabilizing employment and supporting lowincome people, to stimulate consumption.

Comparing thinking inside the GDP box, more attention should be paid to whether enterprises truly benefit from government policies, said Liu.

Wang suggested that efforts be made to ensure funds from fiscal and financial policies such as tax and fee cuts, lower interest loans and market liquidity injection directly go to the real economy.

The country still has sufficient policy room, since inflation is not that serious and the interest rate still permits adjustment, he said.

Against the backdrop of a potential recession of the world economy, China can call it a victory as long as its economy withstands the tempest and maintains moderate growth this year, Liu said.

ECGC to help exporters expand to new markets NEW DELHI: The Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) is ready to support exporters in their endeavour to expand to new markets

especially to Africa and Latin America, said ECGC Chairman and Managing Director M Senthilnathan during a webinar organized by CII.

The session deliberated upon the need for cost-effective insurance to drive exports and bring back growth in the economy.

Seafarers head home; 10,000 to land at Mumbai Port by June 28 MUMBAI: Indian seafarers – mainly crew members of luxury cruise liners – are finally heading home after being stranded for months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Around 2,160 crew have already returned home while another 10,000 are scheduled to land at the Mumbai port trust (MbPT).

Chairman of MbPT Sanjay Bhatia said recently “Around 2,000 (crew members) have come and another 10,000 are expected by June 28. Some of them were crew members of cargo vessels too.”

“Boats ferry doctors from the

Mumbai port trust to the passenger cruise vessels at the anchorage for the health checkup of those returning home. The vessel is allowed to berth only if all the members test negative,” said Bhatia.

So far, there has not been a single case where a cruise vessel was not allowed to berth, the chairman said.

Meanwhile, at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Tr ust (JNPT) – the biggest container cargo terminal in the country – 160 crew members have signed off and another 143 have signed on.

A team of doctors boards the vessel and does the tests as per standard operating procedures. The sailors have to undergo 14-day quarantine and are required to take Covid tests before they are sent home. The port, unlike MbPT, does not have inner anchorage so the health test is done after the vessels berth, port authorities said.

Those signing on are only allowed to board if they test negative for Covid-19.

So far, all the seafarers who signed off and signed on have tested negative, the port said.

PM Modi says Atmanirbhar Bharat package would help minimise India’s reliance on imports NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said recently that current crisis times while being challenging afforded an opportunity to adopt bold economic reforms, rather than sticking to conservatism.

He said the reforms integrated with the Atmanirbhar Bharat package would help minimise India’s reliance on imports, and assist the industry’s efforts to become exporters of products, which it has been importing. “Now, it is the time to get vocal about local”, he said addressing the plenary session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Highlighting that India is facing multiple challenges at the same time — Covid-19, locusts, fire in gas well in Assam, two cyclones and earthquakes of smaller scales, Modi said: “We have to convert this crisis into opportunity.

This will be a major turning point through a self-reliant India. The aspiration of a self-reliant India is

turning into a reality. In the last 5-6 years, our policy was focused into making India self-reliant.”

He said the country has to be selfreliant in medical equipment, defence manufacturing, coal and minerals, edible oil, fertilisers, electronic manufacturing, solar panels and batteries and aviation sector, among others.

Referring to the reforms under the Atmanirbhar Bharat package, including in commercial coal mining and the MSME sector, the prime minister called upon the industry to come forward to increase competition in coal and mining and reap benefits of the integration of industry and agriculture.

“Now, Indian farmers can sell their products anywhere in the country. By reforming APMC Act and the Essential Commodities Act, we are making sure a better integration of farmers and industries. This will

h e l p farmers in becoming a strong market force”, he said.

Local industrial Shri Narendra Modi clusters will be formed and strengthened, he said.

There will be clusters for jute, forest products and organic farming.

Eastern and north-eastern India can gain from such efforts, said M o d i . Exports by foreign companies decline near 14%, imports jump 13.4% in FY19: World Trade Centre MUMBAI: Questioning the basic philosophy that getting foreign companies to open shops in the country will drive our exports, the outward shipments by these entities declined by a steep 13.8 per cent in 2018-19 while overall exports rose by 28 per cent in the year, according to the World Trade Centre.

In what looks more counter productive, negating the basic premise of foreign companies-driven exports growth, these very same foreign companies have driven up imports, shipping in 13.4 per cent more raw materials and machinery in 2018-19, says the World Trade Centre (WTC) quoting the latest figures from the Reserve Bank.

In FY2019, exports rose a full 28 per cent to Rs 38.14 lakh crore from Rs 29.80 lakh crore in FY2018, while total imports grew a much higher 37 per cent to Rs 45.02 lakh crore in FY2019 from Rs 32.7 lakh crore in FY2018, according to the official data.

According to the latest RBI data, there were 8,095 foreign companies, most of them export-focused in FY2019. Of these, 5,099 or 63 per cent companies are into services, 2,350 or 29 per cent into manufacturing, and the remaining operate in other sectors.

Specifically, 18 per cent of these companies belong to computers and related service sectors, 7 per cent are engaged in machinery and machine tools, and 6 per cent are into wholesale and retail trade.

While exports by these companies declined 13.8 per cent to Rs 89,396 crore in FY2019, down from Rs 103,680 crore in FY2017, their imports rose 13.4 per cent during this period. These 8,095 foreign companies imported raw materials, capital goods and spare parts worth Rs 1.18 lakh crore in FY2019, compared to Rs 1.04 lakh crore in FY2017, the WTC data showed.

The export data of these 8,095 companies are based on their audited annual accounts.

Around 22 per cent of these foreign companies are from the US, 12.5 per cent are from Singapore, 9.6 per cent from Mauritius and 7 per cent each from Japan and Britain.

Exports by these companies declined despite their overall production and sales growing 26.5 per cent during the reporting year. Their total sales grew to Rs 23.81 lakh crore in FY2019 from Rs 18.82 lakh crore in FY2017 and this includes both domestic sales and exports.

For these 8,095 companies, their export intensity, measured as the ratio of exports to total sales, also declined from 5.5 per cent to 3.8 per cent during these reporting period.

Export intensity has fallen for both manufacturing as well as services sector companies. While export intensity fell from 4.7 per cent to 3.6 per cent for the services sector companies, the comparable figure for manufacturing companies declined from 6.4 per cent to 4.4 per cent.

Machinery and machine tools companies were the only ones whose export intensity has been largely constant with their export to total sales ratio of 598 of them remaining at 11.5 per cent. On the other hand, the share of exports in total sales of 1,490 companies engaged in computers and related activities almost halved from 14.1 per cent to 7.6 per cent.

On the other hand the proportion of exports in total revenue for automobile companies declined sharply from 5.6 per cent to 2 per cent, show the WTC data.

Against this export earnings by 16,045 domestic companies which are non-gover nment, non-financial companies, grew 1.4 percent between FY2017 and FY2019.

Container Shipping Industry hit hard by US lockdown : BIMCO OSLO: The coronavirus pandemic has shutdown much of the US economy for months and even as parts of it reopen, the data is beginning to reveal the extent of the damage that has been done and a slow recovery is taking a tentative shape.

The second estimate for GDP in the first quarter shows a 5.0% contraction from the previous quarter, and just 0.2% growth from Q1 2019. With lockdown measures having only come into force in late March, the second quarter of the year will prove even more damaging for the US economy. The most direct impact of slowing economic growth on the shipping industry is felt by the container shipping industry, with demand for containerised goods one of the first things to be affected. Laden containerised imports to the US West Coast are down 12.5% in the first four months of the year, representing a loss of 434,000 TEU compared to the first four months in 2019.

Goods arriving with nowhere to go April saw volumes into the US West Coast grew to 823,000 TEU in March, up from 622,601 TEU in March. This was however not a reflection of higher demand, but rather of goods ordered earlier in the year, which were delayed by the shutdown in China in February and started arriving at the West Coast just as demand was in freefall. Retail sales in March and April show this decrease in demand for container shipping goods. Sales in clothing stores in April this year were just a tenth of what they were in April 2019. Food and beverage stores are the only type to not have seen a fall in sales, but the other stores are what contribute to container shipping demand.

High unemployment and lower consumer spending power which are set to stick around for longer than the immediate health crises mean that a return to 2019 sales is not just around the corner,” says BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst Peter Sand.

Inventories filled up The retail inventory/sales ratio in March already shows how the falling sales have left warehouses stocked up. It rose to 1.53 in March, from 1.43 in February. The ratio had otherwise been falling since its previous peak at 1.51 in December 2018 when inventories were being filled as the trade war meant tariffs on goods from China were due to rise. The rise in the ratio in March comes as sales fell by US 24.4 billion while inventories rose by USD 6.6 billion from February.

“BIMCO expects that the ratio will have risen again in April, as imports rose while sales fell further. The higher ratio illustrates that demand for shipping has been brought forward rather than growing. This means that even as sales slowly start to recover in the US, demand for shipping will return at a slower pace as inventories are returned to normal levels,” Sand says, adding: “For container shipping, the outlook is poor as the economic recession and a protracted return to 2019 sales levels, as well as high inventory levels, mean that container volumes on the transpacific trade will not suddenly bounce back.”

Surprisingly, loaded container imports into the Port of Long Beach recovered somewhat in May to 312,590 TEU from 253,540 TEU in April, representing a 7.6% increase from volumes in May 2019. Accumulated in the first five months of the year though, volumes are still down 8.2% from last year. If this trend is reflected across the rest of the west coast container ports, inventories will be filled even further while awaiting a return to higher sales.

How long can freight rates remain unaffected?

Freight rates have so far held up on the Far East to US West Coast trade, up USD 260 per FEU to USD 1,925, and are in fact at their highest level since Q1 2019. However, this has only been driven by widespread blanking of sailings which has driven the idle container shipping fleet to record highs. While this supports freight rates, the idle container ships are still costing owners money. How long carriers will continue to blank sailings to support freight rates remains to be seen.
