Direct Container Shipping Lines launched from Chabahar to India, UAE : Iran’s PMO TEHRAN: Three direct container shipping lines have been launched from Iran’s southeastern Chabahar Port to Nhava Sheva and Deendayal Ports in India as well as Jebel Ali Port in United Arab Emirate Iran and India had previously launched Shipping Lines between Chabahar and the Indian Ports of Mumbai, and Mundra. The first shipping route between the two countries was put into operation in 2017 between Iran’s Chabahar Port and Mumbai. In January 2019, Iran and India inaugurated the second direct shipping route which passes through Mumbai, Mundra, Kandla, Chabahar, and finally Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. India is using the mentioned shipping routes to transit goods to Afghanistan and Persian Gulf nations as well as the countries in Central Asia. Through Chabahar Port India can bypass Pakistan and transport goods to Afghanistan and Central Asia,
while Afghanistan can get linked to India via sea. Iran has awarded India the project for installing and operating modern loading and unloading equipment including mobile harbor cranes in Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar. The strategic Chabahar Port in Southeastern Iran is the only ocean port on the Makran coast and it has a special place in the country's economic affairs.

Mr. Arun Hegde, Director, SWL, adds, "As we celebrate this milestone, we are proud of our

Gujarat Non-Major Ports registers 5% annual cargo handling growth in FY ‘22 GANDHINAGAR: At 4.6 per cent annual growth in cargo traffic, Non-Major Ports (NMPs) in Gujarat saw 2021-22 as their best in three years. The volumes fell a little short of preCovid levels, but were a tad better than the national average of 4.1 per cent growth for all NMPs of India. The overall cargo traffic at 48 non-major ports in Gujarat stood at 405.39 million tonnes (MT) in 2021-22 (387.57 MT in 2020-21). In comparison, all of India’s non-major ports achieved 598.63 MT in 2021-22, (575.04 MT in 2020-21). Gujarat Ports continue to command the lion’s share at 68 per cent in all NMP traffic. Experts opine Gujarat’s NMPs haven’t reached their full potential. Union Shipping Ministry data says most of the country’s non-active Minor Ports are located in Gujarat. Out of the State’s 48 NMPs, 28 were reported to be inactive. This causes congestion at other operational ports, leading to financial burden on businesses, who have to spend additional money on waiting and logistics. Mr. Ravindran Nambiar, a member of EXIM Club in Vadodara, says, “We have our manufacturing facility at Vadodara, but we get our import container cargo at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. If I get port connectivity at Hazira in Surat, my costing and turnaround time would
improve. But the issue is that some Gujarat Ports don’t handle the type of cargo we import.” Most of the traffic is handled at private ports developed under the public-private-partnership at Pipavav, Mundra, Dahej and Hazira. While officials at Gujarat Maritime Board attribute NMPs’ cargo traffic growth to the strong economic bounce-back , accompanied by improved access to ports for hinterland trade, there is much ground that needs to be covered for the State’s ports regulator. “Coastal cargo movement is one big prospective area that is emerging along the Indian coastline. We don’t have many coastal cargo ports. Gujarat — with its large number of NMPs — should take a lead in building coastal ports,” said Mr. Samir J Shah, an expert on maritime trade and past President of Federation of Freight For warders’ Associations in India. This is prioritised as coastal cargo, like other international cargo, has to pass through the international port, facing processes they usually don’t adhere to. This causes avoidable delays and cost escalation. “Gujarat’s NMPs are capable of doing it with a modest additional investment for infrastructure,” said Shah.
Impressive beginning in exports to further add enthusiasm, aiming for much higher growth trajectory : FIEO President NEW DELHI: Reacting to the April 2022 Trade Data, FIEO President, Dr A Sakthivel said that the highest-ever exports of over USD 40 billion, during the first month of the fiscal, shows the continuous impressive performance of the exports sector. The outstanding accomplishments of the exporters have consistently not only helped the economy to reap rich dividends but will also support our endeavour to become a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025. Starting the fiscal with such an impressive beginning will further add to the motivation of the exporting community for much higher growth during the financial year, said Dr A Sakthivel. Praising the effort and hard work of the exporters, Dr Sakthivel thanked the government under the able and dynamic leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, whose support and vision coupled with confidence and trust shown on the exporting community has re-invigorated all stakeholders. Dr Sakthivel also welcomed the Union Finance Minister and the Union Commerce & Industry and Textiles Minister for continuously interacting and guiding the exporters to continue on their wonderful export growth trajectory. FIEO President said that the top sectors, which has
performed impressively during the month were Petroleum Products, Engineering Goods, Electronic Goods, Organic & Inorganic Chemicals, RMG of all Textiles, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Mica, Coal & Other Ores, Minerals including processed minerals, Cotton Yarn/Fabrics/Madeups, Handloom Products etc., Gems & Jewellery, Marine Products and Plastic & Linoleum. Labour-intensive sectors also contributed to the exports basket, which itself is a good sign, further helping job creation in the country. FIEO President is also of the view that though the government has announced a slew of measures to support exports including the recent announcement of the extension of the interest equalisation scheme, extension of the FTP 2015-20 by another 6 months and extension of time for filing of MEIS/RoSCTL/ROSL scrip, however, there is a need to rationalise exports of raw materials to push value added exports, augment container manufacturing, developing an Indian Shipping Line of global repute, increase the validity of RoSCTL and RoDTEP scrips to 24 months and link transferability with realisation, extend RoDTEP to EOUs, SEZ and Advance Authorisation, expand usages of RoDTEP and RoSCTL scrips and logistics support for the sector looking at the freight cost.

Government to send Trade delegations to 9 Countries for exploring possibilities of boosting wheat exports from India • Morocco, Tunisia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Algeria and Lebanon included in visit • Department of Commerce to organise a series of meetings on exports in major wheat growing States NEW DELHI: The Centre will send trade delegations to Morocco, Tunisia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Algeria and Lebanon for exploring possibilities of boosting wheat exports from India. India has set a target of a record 10 million tonnes of wheat in the 2022-23 amid rising global demand for the grain globally. The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has already set up a task force on wheat exports with representatives from various ministries, including commerce, shipping and railways, and exporters under the aegis of the Agricultural a n d P r o c e s s e d Fo o d P r o d u c t s Export Development Authority (APEDA). The Department of Commerce has also planned to organise a series of such sensitization meetings on exports in major wheat growing states such as Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The APEDA organised
one such interactive meeting with various stakeholders including farmers, traders and exporters in Karnal, Haryana for promotion of wheat export and ensuring shipment of quality produce. The stakeholders meet was organised in collaboration with ICAR-Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal, where experts discussed opportunities and challenges in the sphere of wheat export. There is a rise in the demand for Indian wheat in the global market, farmers, traders and exporters have been advised to follow all the quality norms of importing countries so that India emerges as a reliable supplier of wheat globally. “We are extending our support to all the stakeholders in the wheat exports value chain for boosting shipment from the Country,” Shri M Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority (APEDA), said. According to estimates by the
Directorate General of Foreign Trade, India has exported a record 7 million tonne (MT) of wheat in 2021-22 which is valued at $ 2.05 billion. Out of the total shipment around 50% of wheat was exported to Bangladesh in the last fiscal. Recently, Egypt, which is one of the world’s biggest importers of wheat, had agreed to source wheat from India. Egyptian authorities have put India as one of the origins for this strategic commodity. Egypt imported 6.1 MT of wheat in 2021 and India was not part of the list of accredited countries which can export wheat to Egypt. More than 80% of Egypt’s wheat imports estimated to be close to $ 2 billion in 2021 were from Russia and Ukraine. APEDA has already communicated to exporters to register with Egypt’s public procurement agency – General Authority of Supplies and Commodities, which manages wheat and sugar imports to the North African Country.
Indian Exporters & Importers taking UAE route for Russian payments Exporters and Importers are turning to UAE, which offers a flourishing transhipment point and a money market NEW DELHI: Some Indian businesses and banks are using an old trade playbook they had relied upon during the US embargo on Iran to sidestep the sanctions on Russia. With New Delhi and Moscow yet to cobble together a kosher mechanism for rupee-rouble trade, exporters and importers are turning to UAE, which offers a flourishing transhipment point and a money market where multiple currencies are freely converted. Cargo movements and associated trade payments are being routed through outfits and banks in Dubai in transactions that come across like regular bilateral trade between India and UAE, two senior bankers and a few members of trade bodies said. Neither the banks handling the payments question the origin or final destination of the goods nor their clients talk about them. “The payments are processed in a manner as if the Russian leg of the transactions doesn’t exist, be it import or export. But banks know the actual nature and purpose of the trades,” said an official with a large Indian bank. ‘Practiced during Iran Sanctions’ “They just shut their eyes though
there’s no violation of rules here. It’s happening over the past few months in various items, but not in a very big way. It was common during Iran sanctions,” said the official. The UAE entity that trades with an Indian firm acts on behalf of the original Russian importer or exporter in which the latter may be a partner. Payments for imports to India may be invoiced in dollars, though many prefer it in Emirates Dirham to avoid any link with the US currency and clearing system. The Dirham, which is pegged to the Dollar, is convertible into r upees with several banks offering daily quotes. “Now, the Indian importer is not bothered how the money reaches the Russian seller. There can be different ways. We are told that the Dirham is converted into Renminbi. But there could be other ways of settlement using certain Russian banks which are not yet on the sanction list. It’s the same for the Indian exporter who is not bothered how the Russian buyer arranges funds but is happy as long as t h e D u b a i b a n k o f t h e UA E intermediary releases payments,” said another banker. “In the Russian leg of the deal there could be some
cash settlement also,” he said. Russian businesses have long enjoyed a certain clout in the UAE. And though financial institutions in Emirates have tightened their antimoney laundering regulations over the past few years, the UAE is sometimes perceived as a safe haven for the Russian rich. In international trade, ‘bill-to, ship-to’ is a regular practice where the party who is making the payment is different from the party to whom the goods are shipped. “However, for Russia trades, many would like the goods to be routed through UAE despite a higher transportation cost so that there is no mismatch between the trade documents and payment details. The Indian party simply maintains that it is unaware of any Russian connection the UAE entity may have. There can be a new certificate of origin given in the UAE,” said a practitioner of foreign exchange regulations. “Shipment to Russia has begun though not in full force yet. Some payments are directly coming from Russia, some are being routed through the UAE,” said a tea exporter from the South.
