A.P. Moller - Maersk speeds up transformation to improve protability C O P E N H A G E N : A s A . P. Moller - Maersk has delivered strong earnings and growth momentum during the last year and saw the strategy of becoming an integrated container logistics company validated, the company now stands ready to further efforts in building the three world class divisions with strong synergies between them. All embedded with a customercentric, digital and value creation rooted mindset. The message fell today on the company’s 2021 Capital Markets Day. Here, Maersk will provide institutional investors and financial analysts with updated ambitions on the development and progress in the 2021-2025 horizon. ”Today, we are rapidly transforming our A.P. Moller Maersk in line with our strategy. We have come far, but we are not yet done. We continue to see a significant opportunity in the market for global end-to-end logistics and are confident that we can continue to deliver value generating returns above 7.5 pct. ROIC, considering the extraordinary earning levels of 2021 an average of above 12 pct. for the five year period 2021-2025,” said CEO, Søren Skou, A.P. Moller Maersk. In the heart of Maersk´s integrator strategy lies the value creation model, which links Logistics and Ocean through customer synergies and Ocean and Terminals though financials and operational synergies. Whereas, Ocean will continue to deliver stable earnings levels and strong enabler of the company’s strategy, Logistics & Services aims for significantly higher growth rates and new ways of addressing customers needs. ”With our portfolio, our approach, and the need that we see across customers and verticals, we are confident that Logistics & Services has become our growth engine, capable of growing organically at 10 pct. per year while maintained a strong EBIT margin above 6 pct.” said Vincent Clerc, CEO of Ocean and Logistics, A.P. Moller – Maersk. To support this growth, Maersk will spend about USD 1 bn of investment of CAPEX over the coming two years and continue to complement this with Mergers and Acquisitions to continue to build up capabilities and progressively scale.
Also, on the terminal side, Maersk will focus on best-inclass returns and over the next five years the company plans to invest approximately USD 600 mill in total on automation in around 30 terminals. The company has already seen significant improvements on the operational side as well as reductions of carbon emissions from increased use of automation. Financially, Maersk will continue to secure a financial solidity and guides for a stable underlying profitability and cash generation through continued capital discipline with CAPEX close to depreciation. ”We will continue to execute on the strategy through capital discipline. Given the financial strength of the company we are able to maintain a strong balance sheet and use cash to invest in business, acquisitions, ordinary dividends and lastly return excess cash through share buyback or extra-ordinary dividends,” said CEO, Søren Skou, A.P. Moller - Maersk. Maersk also announced the signing of the UN Global Compact commitment letter to a “Business Ambition of 1.5C”, committing to set a long-term science-based target to reach net-zero emissions across the full value chain no later than 2050 and set interim targets in line with Science Based Targets initiative criteria.

HMM records the Highest Operating Profit in Q1 2021 SEOUL: HMM has reported its highest ever operating profit in the first quarter of 2021 with an increase in volumes and freight rates. Revenue of KRW2428.0 bn in Q1 2021 was 84.9% up on KRW1313.1 bn in Q1 2020. The company said container handling volumes were 6.7% higher in Q1 2021 at 0.95 Mn TEUs. The company’s Q1 operating profit of KRW 1019.3 bn compared to a KRW2.0 bn operating loss in the same period last year. A first quarter net profit of KRW154.1 bn compared to a net loss of KRW65.6 bn in the first three months of 2020. HMM carried 950,000 TEUs in the first three months of the year, a 6.7% increase on Q1 20’s 890,000 TEUs, and it warned customers that “supply chain woes” were likely to remain in place for the next few months, at least. “Supply chain disruptions primarily caused by port congestions, the shortage of both vessel space and containers and increased cargo demand are not on course to be relieved in the short term,” it said.
However, it is injecting capacity into its network: it has 120,000 TEUs of new containers on order with Chinese manufacturers, 42,000 TEUs of which has been delivered, with the remainder due by the end of July; and has three 16,000 TEUs vessels under construction, part of an order of eight, with five so far delivered. The vessels are set to be deployed on THE Alliance’s Asia-North Europe FE4 service. HMM has also been one of the most active carriers in providing ad hoc “extra loader” sailings, largely to clear up a backlog of exports out of South Korea from major shippers such as LG and Samsung. “Since August last year, to handle an upsurge in cargo demand, HMM has deployed a total of 24 extra-loader vessels, consisting of 18 to the Asia-North America trade, two to the Asia-North Europe trade, three to the Eastern Russia trade and one to the Korea-Vietnam route. “HMM will continue to deal with market changes flexibly and will contribute to stabilising the logistics flow worldwide,” it added.
Hapag-Lloyd with a strong start to the year in first quarter • Signicant increase in result compared to previous year • Transport volume slightly below prior-year level • Outlook for 2021 conrmed HAMBURG: HapagLloyd has concluded the first quarter of 2021 with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of roughly USD 1.9 billion (approximately EUR 1.6 billion). Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose to roughly USD 1.5 billion (approximately EUR 1.3 billion). The Group net result improved to around USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.2 billion). “On the back of the high demand for container transports, we have benefited from better freight rates, especially in the spot market. On top of that, bunker prices have been lower than in 2020. As a result, we concluded the first quarter with a very positive financial result and look back overall on a solid start to the year,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. Revenues increased in the first quarter of 2021 by around 33 percent, to roughly USD 4.9 billion (approximately EUR 4.1 billion), particularly due to a higher average freight rate, which increased by approximately 38 percent to reach 1,509 USD/TEU (Q1 2020: 1,094 USD/TEU). Nevertheless, due to the demand-related congestion of port and hinterland infrastructures in many places as well as to a resulting shortage of freely available ships and containers, the transport volume was slightly below the level of the same quarter of the prior year, at roughly 3.0 million TEU (Q1 2020: approximately 3.1 million TEU), or minus 2.6 percent. On the
other hand, a roughly 27 percent lower average bunker consumption price, which amounted to USD 384 per tonne in the first three months of the 2021 financial year (Q1 2020: USD 523 per tonne), had a positive impact on earnings. Hapag-Lloyd expects that the EBITDA and EBIT for the current 2021 financial year as a whole will clearly surpass the prior-year level. While the positive earnings trend is likely to continue in the second quarter of 2021, a gradual normalisation is currently expected in the second half of the year. However, this forecast remains subject to considerable uncertainty due to a number of factors, including: the above-average volatility of freight rates at this time; operational challenges, such as infrastructural bottlenecks; and the inability to predict the future course or economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rolf Habben Jansen: “While we remain optimistic for 2021 as a whole, the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic and the congested supply chains continue to present a huge challenge to all market participants. We will do everything in our power to help normalise this difficult market environment as quickly as possible and make as much capacity available as possible. We will also double down on our efforts to provide the best possible service quality to our customers – as we know that we can and must still do better on that front – and we will continue to implement our Strategy 2023.”

Piyush Goyal sets ambitious exports target of $ 400 bn this year Holds mee ng with EPCs to discuss various issues concerning Foreign Trade NEW DELHI: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri PiyushGoyal, and Senior Officers of the Department of Commerce and Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) recently held a meeting with the Export Promotion Councils to discuss various issues concerning the international trade. Shri Goyal complimented the Exporters for their encouraging performance, even during such trying times. He noted that India’s merchandise exports in April 2021 was USD 30.21 billion, an increase of 197.03% over USD 10.17 billion in April 2020 and an increase of 16.03% over USD 26.04
billion in April 2019. He said that the value of Export in the first week of May 2021 is also up by almost 9% over the same period of 2019-20 (6.48 billion USD). He said that Export excluding POL, is even better, and has increased in this period by 15% over same period of 2019-20. He said that performance of exports in April’21 and 2020-21 gives a hope that an ambitious target of $400 billion merchandise exports can be achieved this year. There is a large potential for enhancing exports in several sectors like Pharma, Engineering, Auto -component, Fisheries and Agro-products, he added.
Regarding the issues raised by the participants, Shri Goyal said that they should approach the Covid helpdesk of the Department for resolving the problems emanating due to Covid related measures. He said that the Department of Commerce has taken up several issues of exporters with the Ministry of Finance for their early resolution, like RoDTEP, MEIS, Inverted duty structure etc. He called upon the exporters to take advantage of the Production-Linked Incentive schemes for various sectors which have been announced.
India, EU set to resume free trade agreement talks soon, says official NEW DELHI: India and the European Union will soon start talks for a free trade agreement (F TA), a senior Indian government official said on Wednesday, adding that the resumption of the trade and investment talks with the bloc was an important outcome of last week’s summit. “Pre-FTA discussions will start any time now. In the coming weeks, we will set the timeline and we will have discussions,” Sandeep Chakravorty, Joint Secretary in charge of Europe West in the Foreign Ministry, said at a post-summit briefing. “The will on both sides is to conclude them (FTA talks) at the earliest,” he said. One of the key takeaways from the 8 May summit that saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi join leaders of the 27-member EU bloc virtually was the resumption of the FTA talks
after a gap of eight years. The talks, which first began in 2007, stalled after 16 rounds of discussions were held over six years. During the summit, the two sides agreed to resume dialogue on a trade pact and an investment accord besides on geographical indications. Chakravorty said India had been pushing for the resumption of talks with New Delhi at one point saying that the success of the summit would be measured against “whether we resume the trade and investment negotiations or not”. He said discussions on resuming the FTA picked up steam post the 15th IndiaEU Summit in July last year after the two sides set up a high-level dialogue headed by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on the Indian side and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis on the EU side.
Goyal “did the heavy lifting” from the Indian side “to see how we can agree to some of the preconditions that had been laid by the EU”, he said. “To be frank, it was not easy to convince the EU because they had experience of the past negotiations. And here I must give credit to the Portugal presidency. They also, I think, put a lot of effort into it. They saw that the resumption of the trade and investment negotiations will be a positive outcome of the Portugal presidency,” Chakravorty said. The resumption of the FTA talks with EU also needed to be seen in the context of India not joining the mega Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) as well as New Delhi’s view that FTAs have not worked for India in the past, Chakravorty said.

CBIC conduct special drive for processing pending refund/ drawback claims till May 31st NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) will conduct a special drive to dispose of pending refunds and drawback claims from May 15 till May 31, in order to provide immediate relief to industry especially MSMEs during the pandemic. The Board issued instructions to all field units of customs and central tax on May 13, to prioritise processing and disposal of all pending refund and drawback claims as on May 14. “The Board has decided that there is a need to focus on timely disposal of all pending refund/duty drawback claims in order to provide immediate relief to the
business entities, especially MSMEs, in these difficult times,” it said. CBIC had undertaken a similar special drive in April 2020 to provide liquidity to industry during COVID-19. In instructions issued, the Board also specified that the special drive be coordinated with major trade and industry associations, especially exporters, since submission of required documents will be needed from members. “For facilitation of exporters, all communication should be done over email, wherever email id of the applicant is available,” the Board said, adding that all deficiency memos may be reviewed and
refund or drawback may be considered on merit. Experts said that the move will surely help industry but added that a similar drive should be conducted for pending claims under goods and service tax (GST) regime. “Industry would be greatly benefitted by similar drives ar ranged by GST commissionerate for processing of any other pending refund claim, which includes refund of input tax credit on export, refund of excess taxes paid, refund of inverted duty structure, and many more,” said Rajat Mohan, senior partner at AMRG Associates.
NEW DELHI: Reacting to the trade data of April, 2021, Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf, President, FIEO said that the impressive growth reiterates our assessment that order booking position of our exporters is extremely good and with gradual improvement of situation in the country, will push exports growth further. He said that over 15% growth on the base of April 2019 is a better indicator and reflects a positive double digit trend. Mr Saraf particularly emphasised that the growth in labour-intensive sectors like Gems & Jewellery, Handicrafts and Carpets augur well for the job scenario, which is most relevant in the current context. Mr Saraf added that such a growth has been mainly on account of 30 out of 30 major product groups of exports showing either a very impressive high positive growth starting with four digit and almost all ending with a very high double digit growth continuously defying all the odds for the second time during the year 2021 as still the global economy is passing through these challenging times. FIEO President added that the exports of Gems & jewellery, Jute mfg. including floor covering, Carpet, Handicrafts excl. handmade carpet, Leather & leather
products, RMG of all textiles, Cotton yarn/fabs./made-ups, handloom products etc., Man-made yarn/fabs./made-ups etc., Other cereals, Ceramic products & glassware, Electronic goods, Oil meals, Cashew, Mica, Coal & other ores, minerals including processed minerals, Engineering goods, Petroleum products, Tobacco, Cereal preparations & miscellaneous processed items, Iron ore, Oil seeds, Meat, dairy & poultry products, Tea, Marine products, Spices, Coffee, Organic & inorganic chemicals, Rice, Plastic & Linoleum, Fruits & vegetables and Drugs & pharmaceuticals were the sectors, which contributed towards showing such a spectacular performance by the exports sector during the month. Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf also added that such a growth performance in exports during the first month of the new financial year augurs well for the sector as it will help in paving a new growth path for the sector as a whole during the fiscal. FIEO Chief also reiterated that the continuous support and help provided by the Government during these difficult times has been commendable. Mr Saraf further thanked the overall exporting community for continuously showing resilience and coming up with impressive performance even during these
torrid times. Further an increase in April 2021 imports by about 167.05 percent to USD 45.72 billion compared to the same period during the previous fiscal led to a trade deficit of USD 15.10 billion, which is an increase of over 123.17 percent during the month, which is definitely a concern and should be looked into. FIEO President reiterated that though the government has announced a slew of measures on exports, imports, banking and taxation front, the need of the hour is to soon notify the RoDTEP rates to remove uncertainty from the minds of the trade and industry thereby helping in further forging new contracts with the foreigner buyers. Mr Saraf also reiterated that the government must address some of the key issues including announcement of the new FTP soon after September, 2021, release of the necessary funds for RoDTEP, MEIS and clarity on SEIS benefits, softening of freight charges, resolving risky exporters' issues and continuance of seamless refund of IGST. Besides long pending demand for the creation of an Export Development Fund for marketing of Brand India products and various other infrastructure bottlenecks also needs to be looked into to bring back exports on the double-digit growth trajectory.
April exports shows impressive performance on back of extremely good order booking, starting new fiscal on positive note: FIEO

Govt. may notify Export refund rates by May end: DGFT NEW DELHI: The Government could lastly notify the refund charges for taxes paid on exported items by the end of this month, a senior commerce official mentioned recently, virtually 5 months because the introduction of the Remission o f D u t i e s a n d Ta x e s o n E x p o r t e d Merchandise (RoDTEP) scheme with the delay affecting exporters’ pricing methods. Directorate Basic of Overseas Commerce (DGFT) Amit Yadav informed exporters the RoDTEP charges could be introduced in 15 days, though Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan was noncommittal on the precise timeframe throughout an interplay with reporters later within the day, solely stating the charges could also be notified ‘very quickly.’ In the meantime, exporters reiterated their demand that the federal government carry to an finish the suspense over the RoDTEP scheme urgently to be able to
assist forge new contracts with overseas patrons amidst a minor restoration in world commerce. Sharad Kumar Saraf, President of the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations (FIEO) mentioned aside from notifying the charges, the federal government should launch the required funds for RoDTEP’s implementation in addition to pay excellent dues on earlier incentive schemes for merchandise and companies exports. Mr. Wadhawan mentioned each items and companies exports had grown in April even after ‘normalising for April 2020 (affected by the nationwide lockdown) being barely anomalous. Whereas merchandise exports grew 196% in April over final 12 months and 17.6% over April 2019, companies exports had risen by 28.7% in April over final 12 months, the Ministry mentioned. “The restoration is broad-based and substantial. It augurs very nicely for the 12
months 2021-22,” the Commerce Secretary mentioned, exuding confidence about assembly the $400-billion export goal set for this 12 months, from about $290 billion in 2020-21. On exporters’ issues a couple of slowdown in inter-State motion of products and absence of manpower because of the lockdowns in a number of States and the demand to categorise export models as important companies, Mr. Wadhawan mentioned their issues had been largely addressed. “We’ve been capable of steadiness public well being points very nicely with some minimal degree of financial exercise taking place. When you see varied States’ orders like Maharashtra and Karnataka, they’ve allowed industries to function, together with export models, with vital safeguards to permit financial exercise, with a lowered workforce on the store flooring. So, at this stage, I don’t see any main influence on our export prospects,” he concluded.
UN raises Global economic forecast to 5.4 % growth in 2021 NEW YORK: The United Nations responded to the rebounding Chinese and US economies by revising its global economic forecast upward to 5.4 per cent growth for 2021, but it warned that surging COVID -19 cases and inadequate availability of vaccines in many countries threaten a broad-based recovery. In raising its projection from January of 4.7 per cent growth, the U.N.’s mid-2021 World Economic Situation and Prospects report pointed to the rapid vaccine rollout in a few large economies led by the U.S. and China and an increase in global trade in merchandise and manufactured goods that has already reached its pre-pandemic level. But the U.N. cautioned that “this will unlikely be sufficient to lift the rest of the world’s economies,” and “the economic outlook for the countries in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean remains fragile and uncertain.” Lead author Hamid Rashid, chief of the Global Economic Monitoring
Branch in the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, told a news conference that “Europe’s outlook is not as bright as we expected” because of signs of second and third waves of COVID-19 infections. In normal times, he said, 5.4 per cent would be considered a very high economic growth rate, but this year it is barely offsetting last year’s losses and growth is “very uneven and also very uncertain.” He said the U.N. expects the U.S. economy, which is very strong, to grow about 6.2 per cent this year, “the fastest growth of the U.S. economy since 1966,” and it expects the Chinese economy to grow by about 8.2 per cent. But he called India, Brazil, South Africa and many other developing countries “weak spots.” Rashid said that in the past the growth rate of developing countries would be higher than the global average, but this year the average growth rate of many developing countries and regions is lower because of the pandemic. One of
the key drivers of economic recovery has been investment, he said, with some countries like the U.S. seeing only a 1.7 per cent drop in investment last year while some developed countries saw investment drop by 4 per cent of GDP or even more. Rashid said the U.N.’s forecast of 5.4 per cent growth this year is far more cautious than other international organizations, including the International Monetary Fund, which last month revised its 2021 projection upward to 6 per cent. “We’re still optimistic about the global economy,” Rashid said, but there are a lot of uncertainties that we underscored in our report, especially the spread of vaccination and coverage that needs to happen in the next six months to achieve that kind of growth rate that we project here. For 2022, the U.N. forecast that the global economy will grow by about 4.7 per cent is higher than the IMF’s projection of 4.4 per cent.
Resolution of pending issues of exporters would give impetus to trade: EEPC India Chairman KOLKATA: The value of engineering goods shipments registered a year-onyear growth of 238.27% during April, 2021 owing primarily to lower base effect and strong demand from traditional markets. This shows recovery in external trade is very much on track and improved trade outlook, said EEPC India Chairman Mahesh Desai. “As vaccine coverage rises in Europe and North America we see further increase in demand. Shipments to China have already been quite healthy and we expect the trend to continue,” he said. As per data released by the government, India’s overall merchandise exports in April 2021 was $ 30.63 billion, a jump of 195.72% over $10.36 billion in April
2020. As compared to April 2019, exports in April 2021 exhibited a positive growth of 17.62%. Desai said that the recent surge in Covid cases has some downside risks to the growth as various state governments have imposed lockdowns and curfews to contain the spread of the virus. “This has caused a slowdown in interstate movement of goods and shortage of manpower. In order to address this, we urge the government to classify the export sector as essential services,” he said. The EEPC Chairman noted that the government has largely taken a very balanced approach to deal with the health crisis focusing both on saving lives and protecting livelihood.
In an encouraging development, the Department of Commerce has taken up various issues of exporters with the Finance Ministry for their early resolution. Some of the pending issues pertain to Remission of Duties and Taxes on Export Products (RoDTEP), Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) and Inverted duty structure. “Once resolved, it will further provide impetus to the export sector,” said Desai. Given the growth trends in previous fiscal and April this year, it is hoped that merchandise exports could touch $400 billion in FY22. The value of exports in the first week of May was up by almost 9% (over the same period last year) pointing to a positive trend, the EEPC Chairman concluded.
Forex reserves rises by $1.444 bn to $589.465 bn MUMBAI: The country's foreign exchange reserves increased by USD 1.444 billion to USD 589.465 billion in the
week ended May 7, 2021, RBI data showed. In the previous week ended April 30, 2021, the reserves had risen by USD 3.913

India’s Covid crisis is threatening to stall port operations, could affect Global Supply Chains NEW DELHI: India’s current Covid19 crisis is threatening operations at some of its biggest ports, raising concern the action could trigger shipping delays that reverberate through global supply chains. Karaikal Port in southern India invoked force majeure until May 24 after operations were “severely affected” from the pandemic, according to a notice on its website. The terminal, which claims to be India’s biggest nonstate port, handles coal, sugar and petroleum among other commodities. Gopalpur port in Odisha has also declared force majeure, according to IHS Markit. The situation may echo global trade disruptions seen last year after virus restrictions slowed shipments into China. While India accounts for only
fraction of the global trade that China does, any delays in offloading vessels and releasing them to their next destination could create supply chain bottlenecks. India has 21.9 million tons of cargoes scheduled to arrive this month but with labor shortages and force majeure at some ports, many of the vessels could see discharge delays, according to IHS Markit associate director Pranay Shukla. That may have a knock-on effect on scheduled loadings at the exporting countries. Cargo movement at Visakhapatnam Port, one of India’s major marine terminals, is also partly affected after the local traders’ body announced force majeure in the port area until May 19, according to G. Veeramohan, president o f t h e Vi z a g a p a t a m C h a m b e r o f Commerce and Industry.
State-run refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corp., which uses the Visakhapatnam port to import crude oil, is unaffected as it uses an offshore mooring facility for unloading tankers, Chairman Mukesh Kumar Surana said. Large parts of India are under lockdown by provincial governments that are reeling from surging infections amid a shortage of vaccines and medical infrastructures such as hospital beds and oxygen. The stay-at-home orders are constraining the movement of people and materials to and from the country’s ports, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government resists a nationwide lockdown. A force majeure clause typically absolves a company from meeting their contractual commitments for reasons beyond their control.
V O Chidambaranar Port Trust operating income drops 6% to Rs 550 cr in FY21 TUTICORIN: V O Chidambaranar Port Trust recently said its operating income declined 5.72 per cent to Rs 549.51 crore during FY2020-21 from Rs 582.90 crore in the previous year. According to the annual statement, the port’s operating surplus was Rs 322.63 crores in the last fiscal, as against Rs 328.71 crore in 2019-20. The net surplus after tax was Rs 113.72 crore in 2020-21 as against Rs 135.23 crore in 2019-20. The statement said during the financial year 2020-2021, V O Chidambaranar Port Trust handled cargo traffic of 31.79 million tonnes, against the previous year’s 36.08 million tonnes, registering a decrease of 11.89 per cent.
Imports have accounted for 22.53 million tonnes (70.86 per cent) and exports accounted for 9.18 million tonnes (28.90 per cent) and transhipment accounted for 0.08 million tonnes (0.24 per cent), it said. In terms of containers, the port has h a n d l e d 7 . 6 2 l a k h , Tw e n t y Fo o t Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers in the year 2020-21, registering a decrease 5.22 per cent over previous year’s container traffic of 8.04 lakh TEUs. According to the statement, the port has initiated proposals for dredging of North Cargo Berth-III to a draft of 14.20 metres at an estimated cost of Rs 64.15 crore.
“In order to facilitate ships of Beam 49 metres and LOA of 366 (Existing Beam 48 metres, LOA 310 metres) to call VOC Port, widening of the port’s entrance channel from 152.40 metres to 230 metres at a cost of Rs 15.24 crore has also been taken up by the port,” it said. The statement said that to cater the growing container traffic forecast, port is in the process of developing its third container terminal under public private partnership. “To facilitate ease of doing business, installation of State of Art Drive Through Container Scanner, having the capacity to scan 100 trucks per hour, at a cost of Rs 47 crore is nearing its completion,” it said.
After Gujarat, Goa could be India’s chosen Marine Cluster destination NEW DELHI: Despite having a robust maritime industry, Africa has witnessed shortage in professional skills across certain areas of the industry. In its bid to address the gap, eThekwini Maritime Cluster has signed an MoU with Servest, an integrated facilities management organisation. This has, once again, testified the importance of maritime clusters and how they can serve as the gateway to achieving any goal in the marine industry. A network of companies, research organisations and innovation units within the maritime industry –maritime clusters are being increasingly recognised for their role in the sustainable development of the marine sector. Denmark, for instance, has been working on its maritime cluster strategy for the past fifteen years. What is the Result? It owns the world’s fifth largest merchant fleet today. In India, it wasn’t until recently that the concept of maritime clusters has been introduced. In fact, a draf t prepared under Sagar mala
programme of the ministry of shipping revealed that they are to be one of the focal points for economic development along the coastlines. However, ramping up the initiatives pertaining to maritime clusters is the need of the hour. One of the reasons is the fact that marine businesses have been migrating to foreign locations such as Switzerland and Luxembourg, due to relatively unfavourable ecosystem in the home country. For instance, Adani Group, despite having a wide range of port projects – from Goa and Gujarat to Chennai and Kerala, still operates out of Dubai for its chartering needs. Thus, the establishment of maritime clusters would not only create indigenous opportunities but contribute to India’s vision of self-reliance as well. In addition to this, it will also reduce the dependency of Indian players on international dispute resolution hubs when it comes to resolving issues around bunkers, sale of ships, shipbuilding and repairs, commodities,
etc. The Gujarat Mediation and Arbitration Centre (GMAC), which is being built as a part of the Gujarat Maritime Cluster under the aegis of Gujarat Maritime, is expected to lead India in the list of maritime countries where similar centres are already thriving. Besides Gujarat, the government of India has pinned high hopes in other states such as Goa. With the presence of Mormugao port that is backed by players like Vedanta and Adani Group, Goa can also prove to be a favourable location for the establishment of maritime clusters. Handling around 95 per cent of trade volumes, the Indian ports play a crucial role in the country’s overall economy. Thus, the launch of maritime clusters will not only help in addressing the challenges prevailing in the sector that contributes so much to our country’s G D P, b u t a l s o p a v e w a y f o r t h e development of world-class marine facilities and generation of immense employment opportunities.

Celebrating diversity: Rainbow Containers welcomed in The Netherlands Following Los Angeles and Yokohama, Rotterdam now welcomes Maersk’s rainbow containers, celebrating diversity and inclusion in the maritime and port logistics sectors
THE HAGUE: Maastricht Maersk arrived to APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam on 8th May 2021, carrying on board two iconic Maersk containers, painted skilfully with a rainbow to celebrate diversity and inclusion. On March 11, 2021, the boxes embarked on their World Tour, set to end in Denmark for Copenhagen Pride 2021, stopping at several locations across Asia and Europe on their way. First part of the journey for the 40 and 20-foot rainbow boxes was aboard the Maersk Edmonton from APM Terminals Pier 400 in Los Angeles to APM Terminals Yokohama in Japan, where they arrived on March 22nd. It was now time for Rotterdam to host the containers, which will be displayed at APM Terminals Maasvlakte II until 16th May, giving the employees of the terminal and of other A.P. Moller – Maersk brands a chance to sign the inside of the containers, as a symbol of their own personal commitment to diversity and inclusion. One of the first ones to do so was APM Terminals Maasvlakte II Managing Director Jan Buijze, accompanied by representatives of Maersk and Hamburg Süd.
Representing the company’s global leadership team, APM Terminals CFO Katja Otten commented: “We are very proud to welcome these rainbow containers in yet another APM Terminals location, following Los Angeles and Yokohama, as part of their world tour. As company, we deeply believe in the right of all our employees to be who they are and shine their true colours. The principles of diversity and inclusion are deeply rooted in our corporate culture and as a global organization, we are guided by them also in attracting and developing our talents.” After their stay at Maasvlakte II, containers will also embark on a route across The Netherlands, visiting some of the landmarks of the country, as well as locations of participating customers and partners. Throughout their voyage, all those lucky enough to see one of these rainbow boxes are encouraged to take a picture and share on social media platforms using the hashtag #InclusionAllTheWay. The containers will then continue their journey to other ports in Europe, celebrating diversity and inclusion along the way.
DP World to start development of Banana Port in the Democratic Republic of the Congo KINSHASA, DRC: DP World, a leading global provider of endto-end logistics solutions, is set to start the development of the deep sea port at Banana, following agreement on amendments to the initial contract between the company and the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A term sheet summarizing the amendments to the contract, which was signed in Kinshasa by Guylain Nyembo Mbwizya, Chief of Staff to the Head of State, and Suhail Al Banna, CEO and Managing Director of DP World, Middle East and Africa region, follows part of a review by the parties of some of the existing contractual document clauses signed in March 2018, when DP World was awarded the 30-year concession to develop and manage the Banana Port. The objective of the amendments was to readjust the different obligations of the two parties under the project, to better support the vision of His Excellency, President Félix Tshisekedi, to develop the country's trade and logistic sector. The port will be the DRC's first deep sea port along its 37km coastline on the Atlantic ocean. The development of the Banana Port, which is expected to take two years, will bring significant cost and time savings for the country's trade, as it will attract more direct calls from larger vessels from Asia and Europe, and will boost not only the growth the country's economy, but also the region. André Wameso, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Head of State in charge of economic and nancial matters, said: "This signature materializes the promise of His Excellency
the President of the Republic to make the construction of the deep-water port of Banana one of the priorities of his mandate. And, he wished for a contract that takes into account the interests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is now the case." Suhail Al Banna, CEO and Managing Director of DP World, Middle East and Africa region, said: "The signing of the term sheet is a key milestone in the partnership between DP World and the Government of the DRC, in moving forward with the project and the firm desire of DP World to be part of the President's vision that will give the country strong, efficient and affordable access to international markets that will enhance its export capabilities."
