IRClass prepares Disaster Management Plan for Ports of GMB Disaster Management Plans are essential in helping ports respond effectively and promptly in times of emergencies and ensures that normal functioning of the ports is restored in the shortest possible timeframe with minimal impact. Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), in the process of enhancing safety of its ports, has assigned IRS the work of preparing DMP as per NDMA and NDMP guidelines. Subsequently, a “Master DMP” was prepared considering all GMB operated ports. The ports under GMB have special significance as they are spread over a large coastal area and represent the trade of the hinterland region and the industrial belt. IRS has also signed a MoU with GMB towards collaboration for updation and preparation of DMP for all ports under GMB. While preparing the DMP’s, IRS conducted several inperson surveys in order to identify the various foreseen and unforeseen risk factors and devised means to best contain,

combat and resolve these risks by mobilising the required resources which could include human as well as material resources. This is done by reviewing the relevant documents, infrastructure and interacting with the port officers to understand the roles and responsibilities of the various personnel. Capt. Ashwin Solanki, Chief Nautical Officer, Gujarat Maritime Board said “GMB is committed to offer it's best efforts to achieve zero casualty in event of any disasters. As a leading maritime board, GMB places top priority on ensuring minimal disruption to the functioning of its ports. Through the Disaster Management Plans we aim to establish a framework for emergency preparedness. We appreciate the professional and timely efforts from Indian Register of Shipping in this regard”. Dr. Asokendu Samanta, Divisional Head, Research & Development Division at IRS said, "Ports are gateways for our trade routes and are important cogs in the supply chain system. It is therefore important for ports to prepare for any eventuality to ensure seamless movement of trade. IRS is happy to support and provide our services to GMB to help combat these eventualities.”

A.P. Møller - Mærsk A/S – Trading update for Q4 and full year 2021 COPENHAGEN: A.P. Møller Mærsk A/S (APMM) has for Q4 2021 recognised preliminary unaudited financials ahead of the previous expectations with revenue of USD 18.5bn, an underlying EBITDA of USD 8bn and an underlying EBIT of USD 6.8bn. Volumes in Ocean decreased by 4% and average freight rates improved by 80% in Q4 2021 compared to previous year. The strong result in the quarter reflects the continuation of the exceptional market situation within Ocean caused by the global disruptions to the supply chains, which have led to further increase in container freight rates.

Consequently, given the strong performance in Q4 2021 the preliminary full-year figures for 2021 will exceed our previous guidance, as stated in the Interim Report dated 2 November 2021, now reporting an underlying EBITDA of USD 24bn (previous guidance of USD 22-23bn), an underlying EBIT of USD 19.8bn (previous guidance USD 18-19bn) and a free cash flow (FCF) of USD 16.4bn (previous guidance minimum USD 14.5bn). APMM will give a revised outlook for Q1 2022 and full-year 2022 as part of the Annual Report 2021 that will be published on 9 February 2022.

Port of Antwerp: growth despite eventful 2021 Throughput back to pre-COVID-19 levels in 2019 ANTWERP: The 2021 was another year full of challenges for the port of Antwerp. But despite disruptions in the global supply chain, Port of Antwerp performed strongly, matching the record year of 2019. Total cargo throughput in 2021 was 240 million tons; a growth of 3.8% compared to 2020 and slight growth compared to 2019. 2022 promises to be an exciting year, with the merger with Port of Zeebrugge and important milestones for numerous pioneering projects, despite the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Growth gures thanks to continued resilience Global containerised liner shipping is still highly disrupted, causing irregular calls from ocean-going vessels and ports to be missed out in the rotation. As a result, average call sizes are getting higher and higher and there are ever-increasing peaks in call sizes. This represents a major challenge for the entire logistics chain in and around the port. In addition, the shortage of port labour, mainly due to COVID-19 and federal measures to combat the virus, also played a role. Container traffic, despite these difficult conditions, held steady in 2021 with a status quo of 12,02 million TEU (-0.1%). Conventional breakbulk grew by a whopping 73.6%. In 2021, the segment experienced its highest throughput in the past 10 years, achieving throughput of 11,5 million tons. The main reason for this is the strong throughput of steel (+81%), the most important product group within this segment. RoRo throughput grew 13.9% in tons compared to 2020. The number of vehicles, both new and used, also showed growth compared to 2020 (+8%), but is still 15% below the 2019 level. Dry bulk throughput increased by 15.1% in 2021. Fertilisers in particular did very well recording the highest throughput in 10 years due to price developments. Liquid bulk numbers grew in line with previous years, expanding this past year by 3.1%. The strong increase in gasoline throughput offset the sharp decline in diesel and fuel oil throughput. The throughput of chemicals had its best year ever, ending at +12.9%. As a result of the logistical and administrative challenges caused by Brexit, the flow of goods between the EU and the UK decreased. Despite this, the port of Antwerp recorded growth in total throughput of 6.0% with the UK and 14.6% with Ireland compared to 2020, mainly due to the extensive shortsea connections. The number of reefer containers increased by 2.6% in 2021 compared to the same period last year. This is partly due to increased demand and on the other hand due to the strong maritime position in the shipping areas of Latin America, Africa and the United States. Annual gures 2021 Continuing to pioneer In 2022, in addition to resilience, the focus remains on the strategic priorities of purposeful transition and sustainable growth. Essential steps forward will be made here in the coming year. The program includes the delivery of the first methanol-powered tug, the methatug. It will be an important year for the NextGen District, the future hotspot for the

circular economy in the heart of the port. The first concessionaires have now officially signed and we will proceed with the practical implementation in the coming months. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp: “Port of Antwerp seeks to reaffirm its pioneering role in the transition to climate neutrality in 2022. Thanks to pioneering lighthouse projects, such as the hydrogen import coalition and Antwerp@C/Kairos@C, for the capture and storage of CO2, we can live up to this role and accelerate the transition. In addition, the sustainable growth of our port remains an absolute priority. We therefore hope that we will soon receive the permit for the renewal of the Europa terminal so that we can start the works.” Annick De Ridder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp and Antwerp Alderman responsible for the port: “The port of the future must be one that fully understands and endorses the climate ambitions and environmental objectives. To this end, 2021 saw many, mainly major, steps taken, always embedded in fruitful collaborations, even beyond our borders. For the port of Antwerp, 2021 was certainly also the year of 'smart security'. Innovation and digitalisation are crucial to ensuring the sustainable growth of our port in the long term." Approval of merger with Port of Zeebrugge 2022 is all about the merger with the port of Zeebrugge. An important milestone is the approval earlier this week from the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA). All the formal steps will be taken to finalise the merger in the coming months. The official launch date for Port of AntwerpBruges is at the end of April. Annick De Ridder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp and Antwerp Alderman responsible for the port: "The ongoing COVID crisis, the many outstanding vacancies, the Suez incident and the associated global disr uptions made 2021 another challenging year for our port. Thanks to the dedication and resilience of the entire port platform, we not only weathered these storms, we even managed to return to the record year of 2019. Moreover, with the approval of the BMA, the merger with the port of Zeebrugge has set the final straight. Together, we can focus even more on the transition to a lowcarbon economy and on the further digitalisation of the logistics chain." Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp: “Despite the strong performance, 2021 was not an easy year for our port. Thanks to the resilience and world-renowned qualities of our port community, we have returned to the 2019 pre-COVID-19 year after barely a year. However, there continue to be important areas of concern. Short-term labour availability in this challenging sanitation situation. In the longer term, the nitrogen matter, the achievement of much-needed additional container capacity, and the energy transition will be great challenges. That is why the historic agreement of the merger with the port of Zeebrugge is visionary. Together, we are stronger to face the challenges of the future."

Exports, imports hit record highs in December Cont’d. from Pg. 3

“While the order pipeline has been remarkably good, we could see some slowdown in case Omicron disrupts the global supply chain. In recent weeks we have seen some signs of volatility and uncertainty due to the ongoing pandemic wave across the world, but by putting suitable policy measures in place, the government could provide a cushion to the trade and business," Engineering Export Promotion Council Chairman Mahesh Desai said.

Desai called for urgent action on part of the government to calm down soaring raw material prices and reduce logistics cost in the upcoming budget. "Looking at the current trend, we are on course to achieving the $400 billion merchandise exports target for the fiscal," said Federation of Indian Export Organisations president A Sakthivel. Sakthivel saw imports clocking $59.48 billion during the month with a very high growth of 38.55% as a point

of concern that needed to be analysed. Others played down the concern. "Though the trade deficit is growing exponentially, it's primarily due to petroleum and gems and jewellery imports. India has headroom to accommodate further import growth that goes into manufacturing and export of value-added products," said Prahalathan Iyer, Chief General Manager, Research & Analysis, Export-Import Bank of India.

Highest-ever exports in a Month and in Quarter, till Dec, 2021 showcase continuous resilience of exports sector: FIEO President NEW DELHI: Reacting to the Trade Data, FIEO President, Dr A Sakthivel said that the highest-ever exports of USD 37.81 billion with a growth of 38.91 percent during the month and USD 103 billion during the October-December Quarter of 2021-22 along with an merchandise exports of USD 301.38 billion with an increase of 49.66 percent during April-December, 2021-22 is phenomenal in itself, as it has broken all previous records of recent times, showcasing the continuous resilience of India's exports sector. The enthusiasm with which the Exim community has impressively performed during the year has further given a boost to the sector, thereby helping the economy further move towards recovery. The forecast of growth in the economy along with the recent GDP numbers also showcases the positive impact of exports, added FIEO Chief. Praising the efforts and hard work of the exporters, Dr Sakthivel thanked the Hon’ble Prime Minister, whose clarion call to exporters further enthused the exporting community for such an outstanding performance. Dr Sakthivel also welcomed the steps taken by the

government under the able and dynamic leadership of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and also the Union Finance Minister and the Union Commerce & Industry and Te x t i l e s M i n i s t e r f o r s h o w i n g confidence and trust on the exporters during these challenging times. The FIEO President said that the top sectors, which performed impressively during the month were E n g i n e e r i n g G o o d s , Pe t r o l e u m Products, Gems & Jewellery, Organic & Inorganic Chemicals, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Electronic Goods, R M G o f A l l Te x t i l e s , C o t t o n Yarn/Fabrics/Made-ups, Handloom Products etc., Plastic & Linoleum and Rice contributing to about USD 30 billion (constituting about 80 percent of exports with a growth of 41 percent during the month over December 2020). Out of these, many of them were labourintensive sectors contributing majorly to the exports basket, which itself is a good sign, further helping job creation in the country. Looking at the current trend, we are on course to achieving the USD 400 billion merchandise exports target for the fiscal, said FIEO President. Dr Sakthivel also added that spectacular exports growth coupled

with orders in hand will help in pushing India’s exports further during the next fiscal thereby aiming for exports in the vicinity of US$ 525-530 Bn during FY’ 2022-23. However, imports clocking USD 59.48 billion during the month with a very high growth of 38.55 percent, is a point of concern and should be analysed, said Dr A Sakthivel. The FIEO Chief is of the view that though the government has announced a slew of measures to support exports, the need of the hour is to soon announce extension of the interest equalisation scheme and allow transfer of MEIS and expand usages of RoDTEP and RoSCTL scrips. Some of the other major issues which requires the attention of the government are necessary steps with an option to support the sector in case of spread of new variant of Covid19, encouragement to overseas marketing for exports, fiscal and tax support to address logistics challenges, developing an Indian shipping line of global repute, restoration of facility for import of trimming and embellishments under customs notification No. 2/2021 dated 1st of February, 2021 and services rendered to foreign national and paid in free foreign currency to be given IGST /ITC Refund among others.

FIEO to request RBI for extending payment realisation period for exporters NEW DELHI: Expecting delays in payment from overseas buyers, the Fe d e r a t i o n o f I n d i a n E x p o r t Organisations (FIEO) is set to request the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to again extend the period for realisation and repatriation of proceeds of export from 9 to 15 months. In the wake of the Covid pandemic, the RBI had increased the period of realisation and repatriation of proceeds to India to 15 months for exports made till July 31, 2020. Ajay Sahai, Director General and CEO at FIEO, said that because of Omicron becoming widespread, sales may be affected. So, buyers who import the goods, sell them and then emit the

money would take more time in sending payments. “If the sale period gets elongated due to slow off take, many exporters feel challenges would arise. We are therefore looking into the possibility of getting another extension in time period for realisation. We would be writing to RBI on this,” Sahai told. Sahai said that exporters were flushed with orders for the next one year though it varies from industry to industry. Referring to a discussion in the FIEO board, he said members were not expecting any let up in demand. “The only thing some of the sectors are worried about is the high

prices of inputs. But we are of the view that price increase is not something which is exclusive to India. Input prices have gone up globally and may affect the margin. So, profit may come down but not the business,” Sahai said. Exports from India have maintained a high growth led by engineering goods, petroleum, gems and jewellery and textiles. India’s merchandise export in December 2021 was $ 37.29 billion, the highest ever monthly achievement, which shows an increase of 37 per cent over $ 27.22 billion in December 2020 and an increase of 37.55 per cent over $ 27.11 billion in December 2019.

Warehousing & Logistics sector to get boost with upcoming Noida Airport : Knight Frank NOIDA: Jewar Airport or the Noida International Greenfield Airport, spread over 5,000 hectares at the cost of Rs 35,000 crore will aid the region to grow as a warehousing hub and will push India to augment its logistics infrastructure sector, says Knight Frank India in a statement. The company says that the Jewar airport will unlock huge lands for manufacturing and warehousing sectors as air connectivity is essential for logistic business. "For the warehousing sector, a good transport network is primordial to ensure that businesses remain profitable on account of efficiencies. Most investors

and landlords are looking for land with clear titles ranging between INR 10 million - 15 million per acre. The right land at the right price will ensure that take-up is fast," said Balbirsingh Khalsa, Executive Director (Industrial and Logistics) at Knight Frank India Grade A warehouses make up 30 per cent, Grade B is 70 per cent of total stock in NCR, and only 15.8 per cent is vacant in the NCR market. About 75-80 per cent of these warehouses are in and around NH - 8 in Gurgaon. The company says that the challenge faced by the market is the availability of high-grade warehousing hubs while demand for Grade A

properties is on a continuous rise. A warehousing and logistics hub is expected in Tappal Bajna, which is 7 km away from the new Jewar International Airport. Jewar Airport can open up available 2,000-3,000 acres for manufacturing and warehousing sectors and will lead to 50 mn+ sq ft of development. "The biggest challenge will be land rates. Because of the speculation, rates have already started to escalate and is not making business sense. The second major challenge will be the actual time taken to create the right ecosystem for the warehousing sector to see demand in the region," adds Balbirsingh Khalsa.

India-China trade grows to record $125 billion in 2021 NEW DELHI: The India-China bilateral trade touched a record high of over USD 125 billion in 2021, crossing the USD 100 billion-mark in a year when the relations hit a new low due to the prolonged standoff by the militaries in eastern Ladakh, while India's trade deficit too mounted to over USD 69 billion, according to official data released. The total trade between China and India in 2021 stood at USD 125.66 billion, up 43.3 per cent from 2020, state-run Global Times reported, quoting data

from the General Administration of Customs. China's exports to India from January to December rose 46.2 per cent to USD 97.52 billion, while India's exports to China grew by 34.2 per cent to USD 28.14 billion. The trade deficit for India grew to USD 69.38 billion in 2021. India has been highlighting its concerns over the growing trade deficit with China for over a decade and calling on Beijing to open its markets for India's IT and pharmaceutical products.

Observers say much of China's exports increase this year to India was attributed to the import of medical products and raw materials for India's burgeoning pharmaceutical industry due to the massive second wave of COVID-19 and recurring bouts of the virus in the country. The landmark increase of the bilateral trade crossing USD 100 billion went without much fanfare as the relations remained frosty over the lingering military standoff in eastern Ladakh.

Container rollovers set to continue after December rise CHICAGO: Container rollovers look set to stay and seasonal patterns in container logistics are gone, according to Project44. The supply chain visibility company forecast a stabilization of container markets in 2022, albeit with continued high demand, and the caveat that the omicron and other variants of COVID-19 could bring further disruption. Project44 considers a significant improvement in ocean freight conditions in the first quarter as unlikely due to COVID-19 outbreaks; rollovers are expected to continue into 2022 as empty boxes are returned to Asia and lines struggle to adjust to port congestion. “Global container roll- overs increased sharply from November to December, reaching 45% for December

due to port congestion and Asian manufacturers need for empty containers to fill and export in January and post-Lunar Chinese New Year,” said Project44. The 45% figure was a high for 2021, where the range fluctuated between 38% and 42% prior to December. The typical annual cycle for the container market used to bring a quiet end to the year, which followed a busier period when distributors and retailers stocked up for the holiday season. Since the pandemic’s outbreak, the usual supply and demand fluctuation in goods has been rocked as delays and congestion affect the flow of goods at a time when consumer habits and demands changed rapidly. “There is no longer a typical pattern for movement of inventory and other

goods,” said Project44, adding that the current peak season is stretching for two years compared to the usual fewmonths during normal annual cycles. Beyond the headlines for the whole supply chain, situations are quite different across the world. Easing congestion in Hong Kong, Yantian, and even delay-plagued Long Beach and Los Angeles compared with rising congestion in key European port Rotterdam. Rotterdam was struggling with delays to inland logistics and insufficient storage capacity, a situation the port expected to remain throughout 2022. The short term may offer some reprieve for struggling ports as Chinese New Year—typically a period in which Chinese manufacturers down tools—approaches on February 1.

COVID-19 pandemic stalls global economic recovery: UN report NEW YORK: The UN’s key report on the global economy, released, shows that the rapid spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant has put the brakes on a rapid recover y, counteracting signs of solid growth at the end of last year. T h e 2 0 2 2 Wo r l d E c o n o m i c Situation and Prospects (WESP)

report, produced by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), cites a cocktail of problems that are slowing down the e c o n o m y, n a m e l y n e w w a v e s o f C OV I D - 1 9 i n f e c t i o n s , p e r s i s t e n t labour market and lingering supplychain challenges, and rising inflationary pressures.

The slowdown is expected to carry on into next year. After an encouraging expansion of 5.5 per cent in 2021 — driven by strong consumer spending and some uptake in investment, with trade in goods surpassing prepandemic levels — global output is projected to grow by only 4.0 per cent in 2022 and 3.5 per cent in 2023.

India and UK launch Free Trade Agreement negotiations NEW DELHI: The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri P iyush Goyal launched the Free Trade Agreement negotiations with the United Kingdom along with Rt. Hon. Anne-Marie Trevelyan, UK Secretary of State for International Trade in New Delhi today. The FTA is expected to facilitate the target of doubling bilateral trade between India and United Kingdom by 2030, set by the Prime Ministers of both the nations, Shri Narendra Modi and Mr. Boris Johnson in May 2021. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Piyush Goyal said that both India and UK are vibrant democracies, with a partnership built on our shared history and rich culture. The diverse Indian diaspora in UK, who act as a “Living Bridge”, adds further dynamism to the relations between the two countries, he added. The Minister said that the FTA with UK is expected to provide certainty, predictability and transparency and will create a more liberal, facilitative and competitive services regime. Shri Goyal said that the F TA negotiations with the UK is expected to

increase our exports in Leather, Textile, Jewellery and processed Agri products. He added that India is also expected to register a quantum jump in the export of Marine Products through the recognition of 56 marine units of India. The Minister said that the Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) on Pharma could provide additional market access. There is also great potential for increasing exports in service sectors like IT/ITES, Nursing, education, healthcare, including AYUSH and audio-visual services. India would also be seeking special arrangements for movement of its people, he added. The Minister assured that subsequent to the unveiling of FTA, the two nations would proactively and regularly engage with each other, for deliberating on the scope and coverage of the trade deal. Observing that UK was a major trade partner of India with substantial bilateral volume of trade in goods and services, Shri Goyal said that the cooperation extended across areas like tourism, tech, startups, education, climate change, etc. and that the two nations were looking forward to a mutually beneficial trade deal with

balanced concessions and market access package in a wide range of sectors. Calling for the enhancement of sectoral cooperation by addressing market access issues and removing trade restrictions, Shri Goyal said that it would help generate direct and indirect employment in both nations. The Minister said that the India-UK FTA will also contribute in integrating value chains and help augment our mutual efforts to strengthen the resilience of supply chains. Reminding that the leaders of both nations had e n v i s i o n e d l a u n c h i n g t h e F TA Negotiations in early 2022, Shri Goyal expressed his happiness at the successful conclusion of discussions in a timely manner to announce the launch of our FTA negotiations today. The Minister also informed that it was also agreed to explore during the FTA negotiations, the possibility of an Interim Agreement to provide quick gains for benefitting businesses in both nations. Forex reserves dip $897 mn in 1st week of Jan MUMBAI: India's foreign exchange reserves is seen depleting in the recent weeks. Reserves dipped $897 million during the week ended January 7 as the Reserve Bank sold dollars to meet dollar demand to touch $632.7 billion. Both foreign currency assets as well as value of gold in reserves dipped during the week by $497 million and $360 million respectively, the latest Reserve Bank data shows.

Market analysts point that there has been a broad-based dollar demand as the imports have been rising on rising crude and commodity prices. Besides, foreign portfolio investors have also not been very active in the markets. In the absence of strong dollar inflows, the Reserve Bank likely sold dollars to rein in the value of the rupee which was seen weakening against the dollar as foreign

investors pulled out huge amounts of dollars in the preceding weeks. The reserves growth this year may not keep the same pace that we saw in 2020 and 2021 when both importers dollar demand was not so strong and at the same time the country witnessed strong capital inflows. Besides, over $200 billion worth debt comes up for repayment in the next 12 months.
