India's sugar exports touch 5.11 mn tonnes so far this year: AISTA NEW DELHI: Sugar mills have exported 5.11 million tonnes of the sweetener so far in the ongoing 2020-21 marketing year ending September, with maximum shipments to Indonesia, trade body AISTA said on Thursday. About 2,02,521 tonnes of sugar is under loading. An additional 6,78,237 tonne of sugar is in transit for delivery to port-based refineries, it said. Mills have contracted to export the entire 6 million tonne sugar quota assigned by the food ministry in January t h i s y e a r, A l l I n d i a S u g a r Tr a d e Association (AISTA) said in a statement. An additional 8,00,000 tonnes of sugar has

been contracted under the OGL (open general license) route without subsidy support. The sugar marketing year runs from October to September. According to AISTA, mills have exported a total of 5.11 million tonnes of sugar from January 1 till August 5, 2021. Of the total exports undertaken so far, maximum exports have been undertaken to Indonesia at 1.69 million tonnes so far this year, followed by Afghanistan at 6,23,967 tonnes and the UAE at 4,60,816 tonnes and Sri Lanka at 3,78,280 tonnes. "We are proud to say that the value of the sugar exported /under the process of the shipment is in excess of USD 2.5 billion

or about Rs 18,600 crores, contributing to the country's export earnings, particularly in a pandemic year and increasing the liquidity in the hands of sugar mills to pay cane price to farmers," AISTA noted. The industry body further said that India has managed to contract around 6 million tonnes of sugar without export to Iran, which has the potential to buy 1.2 million tonnes. "With the changed political scenario in the global markets, it shall be prudent to find some mechanism to export sugar to Iran. This shall help India to widen its market and create a premium for Indian sugar," it added.

UNCTAD, IATA extend partnership to facilitate Global trade LONDON: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have extended their collaboration to facilitate international trade, particularly ecommerce. The extended partnership will enrich their history of working together. This includes the successful integration of air cargo messaging standards (CargoX M L ) i n t o U N C TA D ’ s a u t o m a t e d customs management system ASYCUDAWorld. For the 100 counties choosing to deploy the latest version of ASYCUDAWorld, this enables more efficient processing of air cargo shipments. “Through this extended partnership, we look for ward to leveraging the

leadership of UNCTAD and IATA in their respective fields to boost e-commerce in developing countries through improved exchanges of trade data,” said Shamika N Sirimanne, UNCTAD’s Technology and Logistics Director. The next stage of the collaboration will focus on enabling ASYCUDAWorld to manage e-commerce shipments more efficiently. It will include adding a risk assessment for mail shipments and facilitating access to the IATA enhanced partner identification and connectivity (EPIC) platform. This will enable customs authorities to share advance cargo/mail information requirements across the digitised supply chain (airlines, freight forwarders, ground handlers and third-party messaging service providers).

The collaboration will also include the potential exchange of additional operational electronic information such as air cargo rules, flight schedules and others that can assist customs officials in their risk assessments. “UNCTAD and IATA are working tog e ther to suppo rt the econo mic opportunities of e-commerce by modernising the data exchange needed for customs clearance,” said Nick Careen, I ATA’ s S e n i o r V i c e P r e s i d e n t f o r Operations, Safety and Security. “Global standards enable accurate information and effective riskassessments. This in turn promotes stronger compliance and will contribute to a safe supply chain, which should give the authorities the confidence to modernise processes,” Careen added.

The Summit is being organized to invite investment for setting up vehicle scrapping infrastructure under the Voluntary Vehicle-Fleet Modernization Program or the Vehicle Scrapping Policy. It will also draw focus on the synergies presented by the ship breaking industry at Alang, for development of an integrated scrapping hub. Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways and Chief Minister of Gujarat were also present on the occasion. The launch of Vehicle Scrappage Policy today is a significant milestone in India’s development journey. The Investor Summit in Gujarat for setting up vehicle scrapping infrastructure opens a new range of possibilities. Vehicle scrapping will help phase out unfit and polluting vehicles in an environment friendly manner. “Our aim is to create a viable circular economy and bring value for all stakeholders while being environmentally responsible, '' said the Prime Minister in

a series of tweets before the event. While launching the National Automobile Scrappage Policy, the Prime Minister said that this policy is going to give a new identity to the auto sector and to the mobility of New India. This policy will play a big role in the modernization of the vehicular population in the country, removing unfit vehicles from the roads in a s c i e n t i f i c m a n n e r. H e s a i d t h a t modernity in mobility, not only reduces the burden of travel and transportation, but also proves to be helpful for economic development. The goal for 21st century India to be Clean, Congestion Free & Convenient Mobility, is the need of the hour. The Prime Minister stressed that as India is about to enter the 75th year of Independence the next 25 years is very important. He said there would be many changes in the way of working the business and in everyday life in the next 25 years. He said in the midst of this change, it is equally important to protect our environment, our land, our resources and our Raw Material. He said we can work on Innovation and

Technology in the future, but the wealth we get from Mother Earth is not in our hands. The Prime Minister remarked that today, on one hand India is exploring new possibilities through the Deep Ocean Mission, while on the other it is also encouraging a circular economy. He added that the effort is to make development sustainable and environment friendly. The Prime Minister informed that continuous steps are being taken to make Indian Industry sustainable and productive for speeding the process of Aatmnirbhar Bharat. He emphasized that it is our effort to reduce dependence on imports with regard to the value chain of auto manufacturing. The Prime Minister said that today, when the country is moving towards clean, congestion free and convenient mobility, there is a need to change the old approach and practices. Today’s India is committed to provide global standard safety and quality to its citizens and this thinking is behind the transition from BS-4 to BS6, he concluded.

Principal Scientific Advisor lauds the initiative of FIEO to promote R&D Service Exports from the Country NEW DELHI: A 2-Day Virtual Orientation Workshop on R&D Exports w a s i n a u g u r a t e d b y P r o f K Vi j a y Raghavan, Principal Scientific Advisor, Govt of India, Dr Arabinda Mitra, Scientific Secretary, O/o PSA in the presence of Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO, Mr Khalid Khan, Vice President FIEO and Dr Ajay Sahai, Director General & CEO, FIEO and 35 scientists from ICAR Labs from all across the country. The speakers from NABL, APEDA, ExportImport Bank of India and NASSCOM also addressed the participants. The objective of the workshop is to prepare our labs to get Contract business, R&D projects of other countries and find global partners. This program is also in line with the Government’s interest to promote export of Research and Development (R & D) services from the country. Prof K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to Govt of India stressed on the need to focus on quality of agricultural products as this was still the biggest challenge agricultural exporters face in our country. He conveyed that quality, regulation and market analysis are of vital importance in exports of agriculture, horticulture and fisheries. Referring to the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he said that the report was wake up call for agriculture industry. The IPCC prepares comprehensive Assessment Reports about the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge on climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for reducing the rate at which

climate change is taking place. He added that increased global temperatures, rising sea levels, etc. are indicators of climate change and there should be added focus to study these in order to save from the danger climate change is posing to agriculture. He emphasized that ICAR should take the lead and in collaboration with universities and other stakeholders, prepare the report on what is needed to be done in order to sustain in each of our Agro climatic zones. He further added that the increased humidity with high temperatures is very dangerous for agriculture as it would pose difficulty for humans to work in such heated environment. He mentioned that the global trade in R&D services reached to USD 339 bn in 2020 out of which exports was USD 167 bn. He added that the USA and Germany are consistently major exporters of R&D services accounting for total of 42% in global exports of R&D services. He further informed that India has got enormous capability in R&D services and India is consistently making efforts to curb the challenge of climate change. He said that there is need to look into agriculture in classical way along with the added focus on becoming IT Agri Nation by analysing the data of climate change, plant growth, exports, etc. He added that ICAR has to become 21st century digitally driven data analytics as well as Agri research society. Further, awareness has to be made about the opportunities and challenges in agriculture related R&D services exports from India.

P resident FIEO reiterated that investment in Research & Development is very important for the economic growth of our country. Promotion and impact of growth in the R&D services sector leads to growth in employment, innovation, quality enhancement, productivity and exports. India needs to scale up investment in R&D which presently is 0.7% of our GDP which is much below the expenditure made towards R&D by many countries like the US (2.8% of GDP), China (2.1%), Israel (4.3%), Korea (4.2%). Dr Sakthivel appreciated the Government’s decision to double the investment in the R&D sector to around 2% of GDP which is definitely much needed. He said that this will help the R&D services sector to grow and also increase its exports to meet the US$ 6 Bn target set by the Government. He further said that in order to promote the export of R&D services in agriculture sector a concerted effort and marketing needs to be done by the government towards India brand building for the R&D services in agriculture sector. The Government will also need to incentivize R&D services exports from Agri sector to provide a level playing field to the Indian industry, to help them stay competitive in the international market, to encourage more players to take to R&D services exports. Hand holding of the Farmers Producing Organisations (FPOs), Research institutions and industries those in the R&D services but are not exporting, needs to undertaken towards their internationalization. FIEO will be happy to take the required initiative in this regard.

Major responsibility for the success of the self-reliant India campaign lies on Indian industries: PM • India, which was apprehensive of foreign investment, is welcoming investments of all types today : PM • It is the result of the country's faith in our industry that the ease of doing business and the ease of living is improving. During the meeting, the industry leaders appreciated the Prime Minister ’s commitment towards reforms in various sectors, in order to achieve the goal of a $5 trillion economy. Speaking on the theme of the meeting ‘India@75: Government and Business working together for AatmaNirbhar Bharat’, they gave inputs and suggestions to overcome infrastructural challenges, enhance manufacturing capacity, make the financial sector more vibrant, boost the technical prowess of India to attain a leadership position in the technology sector, among other things. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that this CII meeting is taking place on the eve of the 75th Independence Day, in the midst of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. He said this is a huge opportunity, for new resolutions and for new goals of the Indian industry. He added that the major responsibility for the success of the self-reliant India campaign lies on Indian industries. The Prime Minister lauded the industry for their resilience during the pandemic Shri Modi asked the Industry to take full advantage of the atmosphere of trust for India’s development and capabilities. Making a note of the changes in the approach of the current government and change in the ways of working of the current setup, the Prime Minister stressed that the new India of today is ready to march with the new world. India, which was apprehensive of foreign investment at one point of time, is welcoming investments of all types today. Similarly, tax policies used to induce despondency among the investors, the same India can boast of the world’s most competitive corporate tax and faceless tax system. Red-tapism of the past has been replaced by a significant rise in the ease of doing business index. Similarly, rationalization of the maze

of labour laws into 4 labour codes; agriculture, which was treated as a mere means of livelihood, is being connected with the markets through reforms. As a result India is getting record FDI and FPI. Forex reserves are also at an all time high level, informed the Prime Minister. There was a time when foreign was synonymous with better. Industry big-wigs understand the consequences of such a psychology. Situation was so bad that even indigenous brands developed with great hard work were advertised with foreign names. The Prime Minister said, the situation is changing rapidly. Today the trust of the countrymen is with the products made in India. He said that today every Indian wants to adopt products made in India though the company making those products might not necessarily be Indian. The Prime Minister said today, when the Indian youths enter the field, they do not have that hesitation. They want to work hard, take risks and bring results. He said that the youth are feeling that we belong to this place. Similar confidence is in India's startups today. The Prime Minister highlighted that India has 60 unicorns as opposed to, possibly, 3-4 unicorns 6-7 years ago. Out of these 60 unicorns, 21 emerged during the last few months. The unicorns, with their diversity of sectors indicate changes in India at every level. Investor response has been tremendous for those startups and this signals that India has extraordinary opportunities for growth.

He said that this is the result of the country's faith in our industry that the ease of doing business and the ease of living is improving. He cited the changes made in the Companies Act as an apt example of this. The Prime Minister emphasized that the government is able to undertake difficult reforms because for this government reforms are a matter of conviction not compulsion. Referring to the initiatives taken during the Pa r l i a m e n t s e s s i o n l i k e T h e Factoring Regulation amendment Bill, will help small businessmen to get credit. The Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation Amendment Bill will protect the interests of small depositors. Such measures will give a boost to the gover nment’s efforts, said the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister said that by rectifying the mistakes of the past, the gover nment did away with the Retrospective Taxation. Going by the praise by the industry, the initiative will strengthen the trust between the government and the Industry. The Prime Minister remarked that today there is a government in the country which is ready to take the biggest risk in the interest of the nation. He emphasized that GST was stuck for so many years only because the previous Governments could not muster up the courage to take political risks. He said we are not only implementing GST but today we are also witnessing record GST collection.
