APM Terminals Pipavav achieves highest berth productivity on CIXA service P I PAVAV: A P M Ter minals P ipavav has achieved the highest berth p r o d u c t i v i t y o n C I XA service recently. “We are delighted to have created a new millstone of 153.52 PMPH on OOCL Luxembourg vessel, part of the CIXA service on 10th June 2022. The service connects the port with ports of Colombo - Port Kelang - Singapore – Hongkong – Xingang – Pusan – Shanghai – Xiamen – Hong Kong – Shekou – Singapore – Colombo – Nhava Sheva. “We applaud our competent and skilled teams for

working in perfect coordination to achieve this feat,” said a media release.

MOL conducts Carbon-offset Voyage with Car Carrier Offse ng CO2 Emissions from Ocean Transport of Completed Cars for Europe TOKYO: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) has announced that one of the company's car carriers completed a carbon-offset voyage for the ocean transportation of completed cars from Japan to Europe by using voluntary carbon credits. This initiative was conducted as a pilot case to study the specific use of carbon credits in ocean shipping to compensate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which are difficult to reduce using currently available technology.

Completed cars from Mazda Motor Corporation (Representative Director, President and CEO: Akira Marumoto; Headquarters: Aki-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture) were loaded on the MOL-operated Beluga Ace, and the vessel departed the Port of Hiroshima on April 18, arrived at the Port of Bristol, the U.K., on May 28. CO2 emissions during the voyage between Japan and Europe reached about 4,000 tons including all processes from production through consumption of fuel oil. The calculation method of the volume was properly verified by the third-party verification body Bureau Veritas. The entire process, from calculating CO2 emissions including the verification process to compensating all CO2 emissions with carbon credits, was also certified by the third-party certification body Climate Neutral Commodity. MOL used carbon credits generated from afforestation and reforestation projects in Ghana and China for this initiative. Both projects are certified by the international carbon credit standard management body Verra, and the credits were generated within the past five years. In

addition, these projects contribute not only to absorbing and removing CO2 from the atmosphere, but also to several cobenefits such as biodiversity conservation and job creation for local communities. MOL Group aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 in the "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1" announced in June 2021. We are committed to achieving net-zero GHG emissions by maximizing emission reduction efforts, such as research and development of zeroemission fuels and replacement of vessels with low-carbon vessels, and also by utilizing carbon credits and creating natural and technology-based negative emissions through co-creation with various stakeholders. MOL Group will contribute to realize a sustainable society by promoting responses to the sustainability issues, which are identified as social issues that must be addressed with priority through the business. We anticipate this initiative to contribute especially to the realization of "Environment -Conservation for Marine and global environment-" and "Human & Community Contributing to the growth and development of people and communities".

Industry raises concerns over RBI’s draft guidelines on settlement of small value export and import related payments NEW DELHI: Following the Reserve Bank of India (RBI’s) draft guidelines on Online Export-Import facilitators Guidelines (OEIF guidelines) released on April 7, 2022, several industry bodies and experts have raised concerns. Removal of ‘services’ from the categories of online exports while retaining exports of goods and digital products; and mandator y KYC of overseas importers with the OEIFs have been the key issues. OEIFs were earlier referred to as Online Payment Gateway Service Providers (OPGSPs). The RBI’s proposed guidelines on processing and settlement of small value export and import related payments were drafted with the objective of simplifying and rationalising the process for settlement of payments for export and import through e-commerce. The central bank had asked for industry feedback and recommendations following the release of the draft guidelines. “There are about 6-7 lakh small exporters exporting goods and ser vices worth roughly around 30,000 crore every year from India, and the export transaction limit at a time is $10,000. Out of this

Rs. 30,000 crore, 50-60 per cent is service exports, “a senior executive of a global payments gateway company said. Among other industry bodies to have sent their recommendations, the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) too has voiced its concerns. “Exclusion of export services will impact a plethora of small-value services that are exported from India, such as yoga classes, chef/cooking classes, accounting services, bookkeeping, website designing, online web services, consultancy, education, etc.,” it said. Nasscom recommended, “We note that the OEIFs should, in line with the previous RBI’s circulars, be permitted to facilitate the export of services in addition to the export of goods and digital products. Therefore, clauses 3.8 and 5.1 of the draft OEIF guidelines should be amended. KYC of Importers The other concern unanimously raised was the mandatory KYC of importers and exporters that the OEIFs will be facilitating transactions for. “Basically, the RBI wants us to

have the same kind of KYC norms for the exporter and importer clients as they would have for the banks, though we are just third-party payment e n a b l e r s . D o m e s t i c a l l y, m o s t exporters already have KYC done for their bank accounts, and for international importers, even to pay someone $100 for, say, a blog post written from India, they will have to fill in KYC separately. Why would they even do that,” the payments gateway company executive said. Nasscom in its recommendations highlighted that “OEIFs are only facilitators of payment transactions, and not responsible for interacting with consumers and ensuring whether the consumer is already KYC-ed. Overseas importers would be subjected to KYC requirements as applicable in their respective j u r i s d i c t i o n s . Fo r e x a m p l e , consumers are to be KYC-ed by their payment instrument providers, such as card companies, banks providing internet banking ser vices, etc., according to their respective laws.” It added, “Instruments required for KYC according to RBI’s KYC Master Direction, i.e., Aadhaar, PAN, etc., are specific to India and may not be possessed by overseas importers.”

India, Russia Apex Banks to work on payment system very soon NEW DELHI: Officials of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank of Russia are set to meet this week to give the finishing touches to a bilateral payment system to ensure smooth trade flows between the two nations without violating global sanctions, people familiar with the matter said. Russia faces increasingly tighter sanctions after having invaded Ukraine at the end of February. The two sides will meet to discuss payment solutions such as Loro or

Nostro accounts. The first is a thirdparty account, where a bank holds an account in a country for another bank. The second involves a bank holding an account in another Countr y in another bank. "We will examine how we can open those accounts in the national currencies of India and Russia," said one of the source. Agenda For the Meeting Besides Central Bankers, officials from Ministries, Banks and Financial Institutions from both sides will also attend.

"The magnitude of such a meeting between two countries is noteworthy although discussions will be extended before both the sovereigns reach a conclusion," said a person involved in the exercise. Executives of SberBank and VEB Bank Russia are expected to be present along with officials from Russia's trade and foreign ministries. Bank Otkritie, Novikombank, Bank Rossiya, Promsvyazbank, VEB and VTB Bank are excluded from sanctions.

Cabinet approves development of New Greeneld Airport Dholera, Ahmedabad NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal for development of Phase I of New Greenfield Airport at Dholera, Gujarat at an estimated cost of Rs. 1305 crore, to be completed within 48 months. The project is being implemented by Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL), which is a Joint Venture Company comprising Airports Authority of India (AAI),

Government of Gujarat (GoG) and National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) holding equity in the ratio of 51:33:16. Dholera Airport is to get Passenger and Cargo traffic from Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and is expected to become a major cargo hub to ser ve the industrial region. This Airport will also cater to the nearby region and serve as a second airport to Ahmedabad.

The New Greenfield Airport at Dholera is situated at an aerial distance of 80 Km from Ahmedabad, Airport. The Airport is planned for operationalization from the year 2025-26 and initial passenger traffic is estimated to be 3 lakh passengers per annum, expected to grow to 23 lakh over a period of 20 years. The annual cargo traffic is also estimated from the year 2025-26 at 20,000 tonne, which would increase to 2,73,000 tonne over a period of 20 years.

Cabinet approves 3-yr loan repayment moratorium for Cochin Port Authority KOCHI : The Union Cabinet approved a moratorium of three years (2020-23) for Cochin Port Authority (CoPA) towards repayment of the balance outstanding Government of India loans amounting to Rs 446.83 crore to tide over the financial crisis due to COVID -19, an official statement said. The amount was to be repaid in 10 instalments commencing from 2018-19. However, Cochin Port Authority could pay the instalments of 2018-19 and 2019-20 only.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has “approved a moratorium of three years (2020-21, 2021-22 & 2022-23) to C o c h i n Po r t Au t h o r i t y ( C o PA ) towards repayment of the balance outstanding Government of India (GoI) loans amounting to Rs 446.83 crore to tide over the financial crisis due to COVID-19 pandemic”, it said. From 2020-21, traffic was badly impacted due to the pandemic, which

adversely impacted CoPA’s cash inflows, due to which it could not pay the instalments of 2020-21 and 2021-22. Cochin Port has been brought under the Major Port Authorities Act, 2021 with effect from November 2021. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on August 24, 2016 had approved a proposal for waiver of penal interest on GoI loans taken by Cochin Port for various infrastructure development activities during 1936-37 to 1994-95.

Israel, India prepare to resume Free Trade Agreement talks NEW DELHI: Israel and India are preparing to resume talks on a free trade agreement, Israel’s Economy Ministry said, adding that an Indian delegation had arrived in Jerusalem to discuss framework rules and coordinate expectations for negotiations. Last October, India and Israel agreed to resume free trade talks with an aim of signing a deal by mid2022. Israel’s Economy Ministry said a senior team from India’s Industry and Trade would meet with their Israeli counterparts to discuss the ground rules but did not say when actual trade negotiations would resume. Ties between Israel and India have grown closer in the eight years since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

has been in power, and the two countries have formed a number of strategic, military and technology partnerships during that time. Bilateral trade between Israel and India totalled $6.3 billion in 2021 up from $200 million in 1992 when the two countries opened diplomatic relations and Israel has emerged as one of India’s biggest suppliers of weapons alongside the United States and long-term partner Russia. “We share similar challenges in a wide range of fields, from agriculture, climate and water to homeland security, fintech and cyber,” Israeli Economy Minister Orna Barbivai said in a statement. She called the relationship between the two countries “strategic” and said a

free trade deal would significantly boost existing collaboration. Ron Malka, the Ministry’s Director General and former Israeli Ambassador to India, said in the statement that a deal would ease trade barriers for Israeli companies operating in India, strengthen trade and economic cooperation and help the Government in its efforts to lower the cost of living. Last month Israel signed a free trade agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). India aims to sign new trade deals with several countries including Australia, the UAE, Britain and Canada, to boost exports and help the Country recover faster from its coronavirusinduced slowdown.

Container Shipping near-term prospects remain strong : Fitch Ratings NEW YORK: Container shipping is poised for another very strong year in 2022, but Fitch Ratings expects challenges in 2023, which could result in a test of the industry’s discipline or whether companies are better placed than in the last downturn, given the high cash balances, more consolidated market positions and diversifying bolt-on acquisitions. We expect container shipping companies’ performance to remain strong in 2022 as container freight rates stay exceptionally high – despite some moderation since Fe b r u a r y 2 0 2 2 , d u e t o p o r t congestion stemming from the prolonged Covid-19-related o p e r a t i o n a l d i s r u p t i o n s . We

envisage the contracts signed to secure capacity for 2022, which were likely at higher freight rates than in 2021, will support container-shipping performance. New vessel deliveries will not be large enough to reduce freight rates until 2023 at the earliest. Furthermore, we anticipate any further disruptions in the supply chain to stall any near-term easing of port congestion. Covid-19-related restrictions limited the availability of port workers and trucking capacity, leading to longer waiting times. Port congestion on the major US West Coast ports has eased slightly recently, but this could be short-lived as overall outbound trade volumes out of China recover following

Shanghai’s re-opening. The port congestion issues were the dominant reason for the increase in container freight rates to exceptional levels over the past 18 months. While we expect 2022 to be another strong year for the industry, we anticipate that the Covid-19induced consumption of goods over services, and other inefficiencies in the supply chain, will fall significantly. In addition, an increase in vessel supply from 2023, as the orderbook contracted from 2020 starts to get delivered, could suppress freight rates. Higher vessel capacity in 2023 is likely to lead to overall vessel supply exceeding demand by close to 4pp.

To boost export of Mangoes, APEDA organizes 8-day-long mango festival in Bahrain 34 varie es of mangoes sourced from eastern region are in display NEW DELHI: In a major boost to the export of mangoes, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) launched an eight-day-long Mango Festival in the Kingdom of Bahrain on June 13 in association with the Indian Embassy and Al Jazira Group. At the show, 34 varieties of mangoes from eastern states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, are being displayed at eight different locations of Bahrain's Al Jazira group supermarket. 27 of these varieties have been procured from West Bengal, while two each variety are from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and one variety from Uttar Pradesh. All the varieties of mangoes have been directly procured from farmers and two Farmer Producer Organizations. The mango show will continue till June 20, 2022. The 27 different varieties of mango from West Bengal are Bhavani, Daud Bhog, Amrapali, Golapkhas, Rogni, Dilshad, Chatterjee, Bimli, Ratan Kewra, Mallika, Ananras, Sahebpas and, Kishen Bhog, Lakshman Bhog, Madhu Latika, Rasagolla, Dwarika, Raja Bhog, Amrit Bhog, Arajanma, Nilanjana, Rani Pasand, Rakhal Bhog, Desi Sundari, Langra, Himsagar and Khirsapati. Jharkhand’s Kamli and Biju, while Bihar’s Jardalu, which is a GI-tagged variety, and Langra are displayed at the Mango Festival in Bahrain. Odisha’s Benganpalli and Himsagar and Dusseri varieties of Uttar Pradesh are also at the show. All the 34 varieties of Indian mangoes have been displayed at eight different stores of Al Jazira located at Hamala, Mahooz, Zing, Juffair, Budaiya, Adilya, Seef and Riffa in Bahrain. Besides, mangoes as a whole, several mango preparations like mango cake prepared in Al Jazira bakery, juices, different varieties of mango shakes, etc.

have also been showcased at the festival. The mango show in Bahrain i s p a r t o f APEDA’s new initiatives to e x p l o r e international markets for Indian mangoes under the ‘Mango Festival 2022’. It’s the outcome of APEDA’s commitment to provide a global platform for Indian mangoes that for the first time 34 varieties of mangoes from eastern states have been showcased in Bahrain. On earlier occasions, mostly be mango varieties from Southern and western regions like Alphonso, Kesar, Banganpalli, etc were showcased in most of the global shows. The Mango Festival was inaugurated by the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain Shri Piyush Srivastava in the presence of Al Jazira Group chairman Mr. Abdul Hussein Khalil Dawani. The Murshidabad district administration has facilitated the transportation of mangoes to Bahrain in coordination with APEDA. Mango in India is also referred to as the ‘king of fruits' and referred to as Kalpavriksha (wish-granting tree) in ancient scriptures. While most of the states in India have mango plantations, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka have a major share in the total production of the fruit. Alphonso, Kesar, Totapuri and Banganpalli are leading export varieties from India. Mango exports primarily take place in three forms: fresh mango, mango pulp, and mango slice.

Tata Steel to develop hydrogen-powered vessel with Van Dam Shipping MUMBAI : Tata Steel has teamed up with Dutch owner Van Dam Shipping to develop a hydrogenpowered vessel and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the shipping of steel coils. The vessel to be developed and go on a long-term contract with the steel giant will be a short-sea vessel with a loading capacity of around 5,000 tonnes and will reportedly be the first of this type. Hydrogen-powered shipping currently consists primarily of inland vessels and small ferries, both hybrid, partially powered by hydrogen, and entirely powered by hydrogen. Every year, Tata Steel ships 2m tons of steel coils to different countries within Europe. The aim is that from 2024, the hydrogen-powered ship can sail 100% CO2 emission-free and save about 3,000 tons of CO2 per year compared to a ship that sails on gas oil and fuel oil. In August last year, Tata Steel joined forces with Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) to develop and deploy an environmentally friendly carrier of raw materials for steel production. In September, the company also became the first steel producing signatory of the Sea Cargo Charter, a global framework for assessing and disclosing the climate alignment of chartering activities. Cem Ugur, Head of Chartering and Operations at

Tata Steel, explained: “We want to be a sustainable company on all fronts. This not only means that we will be making green steel using hydrogen in the future, but we are also looking at how we can use hydrogen even more. For example, to make our logistics more sustainable. That is why we are also using green ships for the transport of our coils of steel.” Jan van Dam, Director of Van Dam Shipping, added: “Our relationship with Tata Steel goes back many years and one of our ships loads steel in IJmuiden every week. This partnership will intensify our relationship and contribute to our energy transition goals as a company and the shipping industry.”
