This new zero-emission transportation solution is unique to the Indian market and will create an integrated and eco-friendly combination of services from PSA BDP , that delivers greater optionality and connectivity for Dow India and other PSA BDP customers who are seeking more sustainable solutions With the shipping and transportation industry focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, corporations worldwide are engaging in more sustainable actions and initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint along the supply chain.

Gearing up for the launch of this new transport solution, PSA BDP has invested in a fleet of electric trucks from a leading EV truck producer in the region to be used for this initiative and other customer collaborations The trucks can carry a fully loaded container up to 200 kilometers, resulting in annual carbon emissions reduction of over 300 tonnes compared to their diesel counterparts. The investment further demonstrates PSA BDP’s aim to be an industry leader committed to delivering innovative and sustainable port and cargo solutions.

Mr. Pavithran Mkallada, Managing DirectorIndia, PSA BDP noted, “We are extremely grateful to Dow India for their support in this pioneering solution to achieve emissions reduction targets. By leveraging the collective strengths and assets of the PSA Group, we have created a unique zero-emission solution that complements our current eco-friendly rail and intermodal solutions in India for sustainable connectivity We look forward to working closely with Dow and other valued customers to optimize this offering while simultaneously developing additional opportunities to enhance logistics flows.”

Mr Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (“JNPA”) said, “JNPA is pleased to see this renewable power initiative by PSA BDP and PSA Mumbai that provides enhanced sustainable transport solutions for our port users. JNPA is committed to partnering with forward-thinking organizations like PSA BDP and PSA, as we seek to foster leadership in sustainability and create value for trade. We also aim to contribute to the principles of Blue Economy and Maritime India Vision 2030, and of course, through our Green Port initiative. PARADIP: Paradip Port achieved a major milestone by clocking r e c o r d c a r g o throughput of 50 16 MMT Cargo on 8th August, 2023, by exhibiting 6 5% growth over the corresponding period of previous fiscal. This feat has been achieved by the Port in 129 days in the current fiscal compared to 140 days during the previous year PPA has also handled record 942 nos of Vessels in comparison to 812 nos handled in the corresponding period of previous fiscal.

F o r t h e a b o v e f e a t , Shri P.L. Haranadh, Chairman,

Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Port Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) under whose dynamic leadership and guidance, PPA could turn a new chapter He said, “

Record high Ship deliveries boost Container

Fleet Capacity by 4.3% : BIMCO

OSLO: The contracting of new ships has slowed since its record in 2021 but has year-to-date remained twice as high as during the 2010s. The 1.3 million TEU contracted so far this year has therefore kept the order book high, only 3,000 TEU short of the record 7 6 million TEU reached in March 2023.

The order book is in fact so large that ship deliveries are expected to exceed the previous full-year record of 1.7 million TEU three years in a row Based on current estimated delivery dates, a total of 2.4, 2.9, and 1.9 million TEU are expected to be delivered in 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively

Recycling of ships is also expected to increase in the coming years. More energy efficient ships will replace less efficient ones as owners aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite recycling of older ships, the fleet is still expected to grow by approximately 4 5 million TEU between early 2023 and early 2025, increasing the fleetcapacitybynearly18%

The increase in fleet capacity comes at a time when current trade growth in many key regions is declining and global economy growth prospects for the coming years are weakening.

According to Container Trades Statistics, total global container volumes during the first half of 2023 fell 4.3% yearon-year and ended only 0.2% higher than during the first half of 2019. The all-important head-haul and regional trade lanes fell a combined 4.9% year-on-year but remained 3.1% higher than during the first half of 2019.

Fortunately, the head-haul and regional trade lanes improved in the second quarter as volumes fell 2.0% year-on-year and were 5.3% higher than in 2019.

Highlighting the current time charter and freight rate market weakness, head-haul and regional

trade volumes have grown 5 3% compared to Q2 2019 while fleet capacity has grown 17% Future supply growth may be tempered by reduced sailing speeds but further fleet capacity growth of about 15% in the coming year and a half underlines how supply side growth will remain a challenge for ship owners and operators.

Govt to come up with 60 quality control orders this year to stop imports of sub-standard goods

NEW DELHI: The Government will come up with 60 quality control orders (QCOs) this year for products such as consumer goods, rubber, paper and light engineering items with an aim to contain imports of substandard goods and boost domestic manufacturing, a senior government official said recently Secretary in Department for Promotion of I n d u s t r y a n d I n t e r n a l Tr a d e (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh said t

"fairly extensively" and so far 33 QCOs for over 127 products such as ACs, refrigerators, pipes, and safety valves have been issued

"Right now, we are processing 60 new QCOs in association with BIS. These are crucial not only for the safety of consumers but also to improve quality standards," he told reporters here.

Speaking at the media briefing, Joint Secretary in DPIIT Sanjiv said these orders are issued for goods like

smart meters, nuts, bolts and fasteners.

Violation of the law can attract a p e n a l t y o f u p t o t w o y e a r s o f imprisonment or with fine of at least Rs 2 lakh for the first offence which increases to Rs 5 lakh minimum for the second and subsequent offences.

These orders are issued by the department in consonance with the WTO (World Trade Organization) Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) for industries falling under its domain.

Licence-free import of laptops only till October 31

NEW DELHI: The Government has received interest from companies such as HP and Dell towards its new and upgraded production-linked incentive scheme for IT hardware manufacturing and has made it clear t h a t t h e r e w i l l b e “ n o m o r e extensions” beyond the October 31 deadline for those selling laptops in India through the import route without a licence.

A t o p s o u r c e i n t h e I T & electronics ministry told that the government remains firm on the deadline by when licence-free

imports will be allowed, even when there is demand from the industry to extend the relaxation by around 9-12 months. “From November 1, the new rule that mandates a licence for importing laptops and tablets to India will come into play This date will be maintained,” the source said.

After mandating a licence for import of laptops and tablets to the country on August 3, the government had decided to defer the decision till October-end, amid fears that curbs could limit supplies in the market during the festive period.

stepped into damage control mode as top companies such as Samsung, Apple, HP and others were forced to stop shipments into the country as they needed a licence to keep the supply chain going. The government had given a notice of just over 12 hours before putting in place the new regime, which faced flak from several quarters There was discomfort in sections of the industry as well as on social media that the Government was trying to drive in a licensing regime through an “ad-hoc decision”.

Non-tariff barriers emerging as potent tool to disrupt legitimate textiles trade: AEPC

CHENNAI: Non-tariff barriers (NTBs) are gradually emerging as a potent tool to damage and even disrupt legitimate textiles trade, apparel export promotion council (AEPC) said on Thursday As many as 131 NTB notifications are issued related to the textile sector since 2019 with Uganda at the top position with 71 notifications, it said.

It was followed by Ecuador (10), China (8), Taiwan (7), Israel (5), USA (4), and Peru (3).

T h e s e b a r r i e r s i n c l u d e c e r t i f i c a t i o n s , i n s p e c t i o n s , regulations, standards, SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary – related with plants and animals) measures, and

technical barriers to trade (TBT).

These measures are by and large in conformity with the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

But when these measures are used unfairly, in violation of WTO agreements to discriminate against imports and restrict market access, then they become non-tariff barriers hampering legitimate trade.

The council has organized a webinar on emerging non-tariff barriers in the apparel export sector with an aim to sensitize the industry about the issue.

Mithileshwar Thakur, Secretary General, AEPC, said: “NTBs have slowly but surely emerged as a potent

tool to damage and even disrupt legitimate trade.”

Of late, innovative ways were b e i n g e x p l o r e d b y d e v e l o p e d economies like the European Union to restrict imports from developing countries, he said.

Legislations like CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) and E U D R ( E U D e f o r e s t a t i o n Legislation) are violative of WTO agreements and bound to make Indian exports to the EU less competitive, he added.

“Ways and means need to be explored to handle the challenges arising out of these legislations,” Thakur said.
