EU, India trade agreement to benefit domestic exporters: TPCI NEW DELHI: The proposed free trade agreement between India and the European Union would benefit domestic exporters as EU is one of the biggest traditional markets for the country, TPCI said recenty. Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) organised a panel discussion on India-EU trade relations, where experts discussed the proposed pact. ‘Industry is upbeat with hope and optimism over India – EU ensuing trade pact,’ it said in a statement, adding that for most Indian products, EU is one of the biggest traditional markets where exporters see a big turnaround post the agreement. Quoting experts, the council
said issues like movement of professionals, duty cut on goods such as alcoholic beverages, automobiles and dairy products may see tough negotiations. Experts stated that the decision to resume talks for the agreement between India and the EU was a positive development as it will benefit both the sides. Arpita Mukherjee, professor at ICRIER, proposed innovative ways of tariff liberalisation and stated that dairy is a complex issue since both the EU and India are large dairy markets with steady rise in production. ‘India needs to deeply study EU-Vietnam
and EU-MERCOSUR agreements to see what these partners gave to the EU and got in return. They are India’s competitors in the EU today, and much better placed there due to their agreements,’ Mukherjee was quoted as saying. Rupa Chanda, RBI Chair Professor in Economics, said India retains its unique advantages for trade partners as its large market and human resource base, role in pharma production, manufacturing and emerging startup ecosystem are quite unparalleled. In 2020, India’s export to EU was USD 38.43 billion, while imports stood at USD 33.4 billion.

1st Direct Rail Service from Gujarat to Bangladesh by CONCOR
Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The rst rake of 80 Containers has been railed out on 11.06.2021 and all the CONCOR owned containers are fitted with GPS enabled seal called ‘Electronic Cargo Tracking System (ECTS)’ for online tracking of the movement by the stakeholders. The Logistics cost of this shipment from ICD Ankleshwar (Gujarat) to Benapole (Bangladesh), with rail travel of 2,138 kms, worked out to less then Rs. 4.50 Per Kg. CONCOR has designed this direct rail service from Gujarat to Bangladesh by leveraging its Rolling stock, Owned containers, Terminal network, Domain knowledge and CBIC guidelines. The trade can charter the CONCOR’s direct rail service for their export shipment from Gujarat to Benapole, Jessore,
Singia, Naopara, Khulna, Ishwardi, Muladoli, Dashuria, Ullapara, Sirajganj and Banga Bandhu Bridge at Bangladesh. This initiative of CONCOR will be a game changer, which will lead to paradigm shift from sea to rail for export to Bangladesh and will also enable the Gujarat’s trade to access the highly potential market of neighboring country Bangladesh with not only reduced transit time but also at a cheaper logistics cost. CONCOR appreciates the trade response and also recognizes the inbuilt support of Customs officials at ICD Ankleshwar, Western Railway and other stakeholders to make it happen and boost exports from the Industrial belt of Vadodara-Vapi Region. CONCOR also plans similar movement from its ICD Ahmedabad shortly.
CMA CGM & CNES inks pact for shipping, logistics and space industry innovations • Wide-ranging ve-year agreement between CNES and CMA CGM. • Unique collaboration covering smart ship routing, the maritime energy transition, upgrading of port activities and optimized logistics. • Shared expertise for future mobility solutions. MARSEILLE: Meeting at the Toulouse Space Centre on Thursday 10 June, CNES Chairman & CEO Philippe Baptiste and Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman & CEO of the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, signed a unique partnership agreement. This five-year agreement will call on the respective expertise of CNES and CMA CGM to identify, design and develop innovative solutions together to serve shipping, logistics and the space industry. A unique ve-year collaboration to spawn innovative solutions Under the agreement, CNES and CMA CGM’s experts will be focusing on a range of topics including: • Smart ship routing to enhance safety at sea to aid crews and closely manage shipping’s environmental footprint. Data on currents, winds and waves will notably help to further optimize sea crossings and make them safer while developing effective management of future hybrid ship propulsion systems. • The maritime energy transition, through sharing of experience with hydrogen and practices for producing, storing, distributing, filling and using this future ‘green’ fuel, exploiting economies of scale to make it a viable prospect. • Upgrading of port activities and infrastructures, employing digital technologies to ease flows and paying special attention to environmental impacts. • Contributions of the space sector to optimizing logistics in order to develop a reliable and sustainable end-to-end service for global tracking of goods. Under their partnership agreement, CNES and the CMA CGM Group, both members of the French Maritime Cluster, will be working with start-ups and SMEs and relying on their entities charged with supporting business development and start-ups (ZEBOX, CMA CGM Venture and Connect by CNES), as well as on CMA CGM’s R&D teams. Developing innovative products and services These focus areas were defined through Connect by CNES, the space agency’s initiative to put its expertise to work in helping firms develop innovative products and services leveraging space technologies and solutions. Analysis has concentrated on seeking ways of exploiting space data and
services to enhance mobility management in the maritime sector. This approach ties in with CMA CGM’s ambition to forge partnerships outside the shipping industry and offer innovative and disruptive solutions to build the shipping and logistics of the future for its customers and to preserve the environment. On the occasion of this visit, CMA CGM’s Chairman & CEO Rodolphe Saadé commented: “CNES is world-renowned for its space expertise. This unique partnership will cement our innovation strategy, enabling us to benefit from technologies developed by CNES, be it to optimize our operations or to support our energy transition.” CNES Chairman & CEO Philippe Baptiste added: “Creating activities from satellite data and services for our societies is a major focus of action for us at the French space agency. This agreement signed with CMA CGM, one of the world’s leading shipping and logistics players, is a perfect illustration of our desire to reach outside the space industry, notably to the mobility sector, which is a priority area for Connect by CNES alongside the environment and healthcare. This cooperation will also allow our two organizations to mutually benefit from each other’s excellence.” During his visit, Rodolphe Saadé was also given a tour of the control room of Cospas-Sarsat, the global system that collects, locates and forwards distress signals from emergency beacons, and the facilities at the French Operations Centre for Science and Exploration (FOCSE). Satellite-based data service providers CLS and Kineis also presented their smart ship routing and space-based Internet of Things (IoT) solutions designed to meet the digital needs of shipowners.

Govt nod shortly to push Indian-owned ships : Sources Cont’d. from Pg. 3
It is aimed at encouraging ship owners to acquire vessels to participate in these tenders, which will also help increase jobs in the sector. The policy was announced in February as part of the fiscal 2022 Union Budget. “The policy is in the inter-ministerial consultation stage,” a senior
government official said recently. “It should be taken up by the Cabinet this month,” the official added. As per the policy being discussed, for a new ship which is less than 10 years old on the date of flagging in India, the subsidy support will be 15% of the lowest quoted offer by a foreign flagged company in a tender. This subsidy for a 10-20-year-old ship will be 10%.
After the scheme is launched, this rate will be reduced by 1% every year till it reaches 10% and 5%, respectively. Essentially, the policy looks at increasing market share of Indianowned ships in the global fleet. Currently, they are estimated to carry only about 8% of India’s export-import trade.
New scheme for services exports soon: Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan NEW DELHI: The government is in the process of formulating appropriate measures to boost services exports, which will be part of the upcoming Foreign Trade Policy (FTP), Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan said recently. The statement will likely reassure Covid-hit services exporters about continued policy support, albeit in different forms or structure, amid apprehension that the resourcestrapped government may substantially reduce benefits for certain services. Exporters have been awaiting the notification of support for FY20 and FY21 under the Service Exports From India Scheme (SEIS). Asked if the current SEIS would continue to be a part of the new FTP, Wadhawan told reporters: “When we firm up the new FTP, what we need to do for the services sector will be taken into account, based on stakeholders’ feedback and other inputs. And appropriate schemes and measures will
be there for services exporters in the new FTP.” Sources had earlier told FE that the commerce ministry was weighing a proposal to overhaul the SEIS to make it more broad-based and fool-proof so that a wider pool of businesses, especially Covid-hit MSMEs, get the succour. This revamped scheme, probably with a new name, could be part of the new five-year FTP, which would be effective from October 2021, they had said. Under the extant SEIS, the government offers exporters duty credit scrips at 5-7% of the net foreign exchange earned, depending on the nature of services. Sources had earlier said the government could also reduce benefits for consultancy and certain other professional services that it thought cornered a sizeable chunk of incentives without commensurate benefits. Moreover, a section of the government believes that since few players are
grabbing most of the SEIS incentives, the scheme should be altered in such a fashion that it helps a large number of small businesses as well. Already, services exporters have urged the government to release SEIS benefits for FY20 at the earliest, which could be to the tune of `3,000-4,000 crore. The SEIS was introduced in the FTP for 2015-20; the validity of the FTP has now been extended up to September 2021. Services exports dropped almost 6% year-on-year in FY21 to $203 billion due to the pandemic, while merchandise exports contracted by just over 7% to about $291 billion, according to a quick estimate by the commerce ministry. Ser vices trade surplus has been substantially offsetting the merchandise trade deficit. Despite the pandemic, the overall trade deficit dropped to just $13 billion, thanks to an $86-billion surplus in services trade in FY21.
Adani Group delivers three oxygen containers in Kerala ERNAKULAM: The Adani Group has supplied three oxygen containers to the Ernakulam district administration as part of extending support in the fight against the second wave of Covid-19. The containers were shipped via an Indian Air Force IL -76 flight from Singapore and handed over to the authorities at the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery.
Each of these containers can carry 20 metric tonnes of oxygen. This will ensure that oxygen will be transferred to hospitals faster than before, an official spokesman for the Adani Group said here. Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Ltd (AVPPL) has been active in the fight against Covid-19 as part of its social commitment programme and has donated ₹5 crore to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. Also, AVPPL had handed over 1,012 oxygen cylinders to the State government last week.
Additionally, the Group had donated 500 beds along with the required equipment to the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to set up Covid First Line Treatment Centres (CFLTCs), the spokesman added. As part of Covid-19 defence activities, AVPPL has been continuously providing assistance to community kitchens in Kerala and has also distributed masks and sanitisers and conducted defence awareness activities as part of its social commitment programmes.
India's sugar exports touch 4.25 million tonnes so far this year: AISTA BARAMATI: Sugar mills in India have exported 4.25 million tonnes of the sweetener so far in the ongoing 2020-21 marketing year ending September, with maximum shipments to Indonesia, trade body AISTA said. Mills have contracted to export 5.85 million tonnes of sugar so far, as against the 6 million tonnes quota assigned by the food ministry in January this year, All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) said in a statement. According to AISTA, mills have exported a total of 4.25 million tonnes of sugar from January 1 till June 7, 2021. Of the total exports undertaken so far,
maximum exports have been undertaken to Indonesia at 1.40 million tonnes so far this year, followed by Afghanistan at 5,20,905 tonnes and the UAE at 4,36,917 tonnes and Sri Lanka at 3,24,113 tonnes. About 3,59,665 tonnes of sugar is under loading. An additional 4,98,462 tonnes of sugar is in transit and delivered to portbased refineries, it said. "The US has withdrawn oil restrictions on Iran and there are chances of sugar exports to Iran. India's highest sugar exports were to Iran last year," AISTA Chairman Praful Vithalani said recently. The association noted that monsoon has set in and sugar is a highly
hygroscopic commodity as it catches moisture very fast. It is necessary that sugar stored in port areas or sugar reaching at the port for export get evacuated immediately. While Hazira port trust has decided to accord priority to sugar vessels for berthing, similar instructions need to be issued to other ports also, it said. AISTA has already written to the ports from where major sugar exports are taking place to give priority to vessels for sugar exports on lines of Hazira ports, it said and added the Union Food Ministry may also take up the matter with Shipping and Commerce ministries in this regard.

Exports rise leads to higher Container prices across Major Ports : Analysts MUMBAI: As the world economy recovers from COVID-19 disruptions and demand for exports rises, container prices at major ports, such as Chennai, Mundra and Nhava Sheva, remain high. India’s exports grew by 67.39 percent to $32.21 billion in May from $19.24 billion in the same month last year, driven by healthy growth in sectors such as engineering, pharmaceuticals, petroleum products, and chemicals, according to government data released on June 2. Exports were at $29.85 billion in May 2019. “Trading volumes have risen in the past two months, and they are expected to remain high for the next few months as a number of companies look to supply the pent-up demand in other countries,” a Mumbai-based shipping analyst said. Demand for exports, especially vaccines, medical equipment like masks, personal protective equipment kits, and oxygen concentrators, has risen in the past few months, shipping companies said. “Many companies are likely to get
into bidding wars to extradite their export and import cargo, and this is likely to lead to higher tariffs,” another Mumbai-based shipping analyst said. Demand for white goods has also picked up in the last few months, companies said. “As the world economy opens up, especially the US and European markets, people aren’t able to spend on holidays because of the pandemic, and they have built up quite nice disposable incomes, and that has gone into consumer goods,” the second analyst added. Furthermore, as the world economy reopens in the aftermath of COVID-19, a growing shortage of raw materials is also wreaking havoc on global supply chains, thereby creating pent-up demand, market experts said. “Trading volumes have risen in the past two months, and they are expected to remain high for the next few months as a number of companies look to supply the pent-up demand in other countries,” a Mumbai-based shipping analyst said.

Indian Logistics sector poised for growth ahead : Analysts MUMBAI: Even after a stupendous rally in the shares of logistics companies in the past year that saw stock prices of frontline players jump as much as 270 per cent, analysts have toned down their return expectation. While they remain bullish on the sector as they see it as a big beneficiary of the ‘re-opening of the economy’ theme, with pent-up demand expected to drive growth, they suggest investors be choosy and buy stocks of companies that have revenue visibility and balance-sheet strength. Besides traditional avenues for growth, cold chain supply solutions for the pharma and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector can result in big opportunities for the space, they said. “Vaccine partnerships will be a nearterm booster for the sector and are sentimentally positive, but the real kicker is the sharp uptick in the e c o n o m i c a c t i v i t y, w h i c h w i l l structurally drive the logistics sector,” said Siddhartha Khemka, head of retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. The second wave of the pandemic is largely behind India with daily cases at
two-month low. Given this, some of the states have started to unlock and the focus has now shifted to vaccinating citizens at an aggressive pace. As the economy opens, analysts believe pentup demand for goods and services will play out. “Whenever one talks about the boom in the logistic sector, it directly indicates an upshift in business growth and ultimately expectations of higher GDP. The pent-up demand in many sectors, especially manufacturing, agri, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and metals will require higher transportation of raw material, semi-finished and finished goods. This will become a major driving force for the sector,” said Vishal Wagh, research head at Bonanza Portfolio. New avenues Growing demand for cold chain logistics has also become a boon for the sector, with companies foraying into new services that analysts say can result in a big boost to their business model. The Indian cold supply chain sector, according to reports, is set to grow at a CAGR of 17-18 per cent till 2022. While growth will be driven by the
government-led Covid immunisation programme, the growing e-commerce market for FMCG, dairy, meat and fish, will also help propel the sector significantly, given the ongoing virus threat, reports suggest. To tap into this opportunity, TCI Express in the March quarter launched a ‘Cold Chain Express Ser vice’. Meanwhile, Snowman Logistics has already bagged a deal from DRL to provide temperature-controlled end-toend logistics solutions for the delivery of the Sputnik Covid-19 vaccine. AC manufacturer Blue Star recently launched a new range of refrigeration products and solutions which it said are ideal for storing vaccines. “Vaccination is a recurring theme and more players are seeking manufacturing opportunities. Currently, the market is small but the business is expected to increase going ahead. Logistics has been a key focus area of the government. GST, National Logistics Policy and other structural steps will lead to increase in market share of organised players and result in the long-term growth of the sector,” said Ronald Siyoni, AVP- Sharekhan.

SMEs are plagued with 300% increase in freight costs : Experts MUMBAI: The shipping and logistics crisis plaguing the industry since the onset of Covid freight costs have skyrocketed 300%, worsening the situation for Indian SMEs who are navigating their business amidst the global pandemic, says a new report. Drip Capital recently released a research paper around the 'Global Shipping Crisis' talking about the detrimental impact of the rising tide of freight costs on SMBs. Based on the shipping and logistics crisis plaguing the industry since the onset of Covid freight costs have skyrocketed 300% worsening the situation for Indian SMEs who are navigating their business amidst the global pandemic. This competitive environment severely affected the SME exporters who were burdened by these high costs. In a statement, Pushkar Mukewar, co-founder, CEO, Drip Capital said, "The lack of containers doesn't just increase logistics costs, but also affects the SMEs' capabilities to fulfill orders and delays payment cycles while stressing their margins. If the issue continues, consumerled economies are likely to scout for alternative markets with shorter trade routes to cut losses. This could severely harm SMEs who are already battling with the pandemic-led economic crisis."
The global shipping crisis, results from the uneven post-Covid economic recoveries of the world's largest importing and exporting countries. "The primary pillars of the crisis are significant fall in the availability of containers, reduced workforce, fewer shipping vessels operating, and erratic movements in demand for various commodities. Additionally, a lag in the supply of timber to manufacture containers, a rise in the number of containers being scrapped than produced further increased the cost of the containers which surged from $ 1600 last year to $ 2500 this year," he added in the statement. In 2019, China contributed to 16.1% of overall international exports. But when Covid struck China's exports plummeted by 17% in the first two months of 2020. This was due to strict lockdowns leading to a manufacturing standstill, labor shortage to transport the incoming containers, and diversion of multiple reefer containers from major Chinese ports. Consequently, shipping liners predicted a further plunge in ocean freight and began skipping docks or even the entire route to shield themselves from significant losses. "Delays in shipments mean the products would barely have a few months on the shelf of the buyers, who now run the risk of not selling the products. New
orders will not be placed if the buyer suffers a loss. As a result, my strategy for the coming year until the container shortage issue persists is to only export on shorter and close-by trade routes. To avoid spoiling my trade relations, for the rest of 2021, I will not be servicing long-distance clients," said Jignesh Mehta, CEO, Rise, and Shine Overseas, in a statement. The pandemic led to an economic contraction across the world. In March 2020, with social distancing protocols and coronavirus clusters amongst dockworkers, there emerged a shortage of containers in Asia as empty metal boxes were stranded at North American and European ports. As China started to recover from the virus and its economic impact, it was flushed with orders from North American and European markets, and it recorded a 3.5% y-o-y growth in April 2020. Hence, China began ramping up its global empty container repositioning program. According to S&P data, in June, the total volume of empty twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers shipped from the US to China increased by 188% Yo-Y and 245% Y-o-Y in June and July, respectively. On the other hand, more cargo came into consumer-led economies like the US, where the goods movement system had slowed down due to a lack of workforce and a series of lockdowns.
