LNG demand in China is expected to continue to expand, making the nation the world's largest importer of LNG. MOL continually addresses environment issues in line with "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1", and the group is unified in working to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050 and realize a decarbonized society. It will also further deepen and develop its knowhow and build an even stronger record of success in China as it seeks to contribute to the ongoing growth of China's LNG business as a multimodal shipping corporate group.

Global Port congestion is getting worse, says Sea-Intelligence COPENHAGEN: SeaIntelligence has analysed data from the November 2021 issue of the Global Liner Performance report to calculate how much vessel capacity was being effectively removed from the market due to vessels being tied up on seemingly interminable queues around the world. Overall, 11.5% of the global capacity has been taken out of the market due to vessel delays in November 2021, a slight improvement from 12.3% in October 2021, according to Danish maritime data analysts. "However, it seems that there is no sign of imminent improvement, while the normal state of affairs in the market is that 2% of global capacity is 'trapped' in delays somewhere in the world," noted Sea-Intelligence. 2021 was a year where demand grew 7% year-on-year, partly due to the downfall in early 2020, and at the same time capacity effectively was reduced by 11%. Furthermore, Sea-Intelligence used the bi-weekly customer advisories from the major South Korean container carrier, HMM, to calculate a terminal congestion index. The above figures show the results of Sea-Intelligence's terminal congestion index for North America and Europe. For North America, the slight improvement after Golden Week was fully reversed by the end of 2021 and a new record was
set on 30 December, albeit with a slight improvement again on 6 January, driven by improvements in Savannah and Charleston. For Europe, the Danish analysts see a situation that has been steadily getting worse since the start of October, with no signs of any improvement, or even levelling out. "This also implies that we might well expect to see a continued upwards push on freight rates on this trade, as the congestion is likely to have a negative impact on reliability, and hence in turn on available capacity," commented Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence, who concluded that all the available data show that congestion and bottleneck problems are worsening getting into 2022, and there is no indication of improvements.
Haryana plans 10 Railway stations on DFCs NEW DELHI: As many as 10 new railway stations will be built on Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor passing through Haryana. Sharing this after a meeting with the Union minister of railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw in Delhi, Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar said possibilities of exploring the industrial sector around these 10 stations will also be considered. He said a proposal has also been made to to develop a Regional Rapid Transit System (Resort Rapid Transit System) rail route from Delhi to Hisar to facilitate connectivity from Hisar Airport to Delhi Airport. Speaking to reporters, Khattar said detailed discussions were held with Vaishnaw regarding several schemes to develop various areas around 10 railway stations to be set up on the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors passing through Haryana. Timely decisions have been taken to speed up the works and processes of various railway projects in Haryana in a time-bound manner, shared Vaishnaw, while interacting with reporters after the meeting. For the elevated railway line project of Kaithal also, approval will be given by the Ministry of Railways by preparing DPR soon. The CM said for the construction of the remaining link of the freight corridor up to Palwal-Prithla, necessary directions would be given to the department to acquire land at the earliest. Industrial units of this area will be greatly benefited by the formation of this link, he added. Haryana CM also met Union minister for labour and employment and environment, forest and climate change, B h u p e n d e r Ya d a v o n M o n d a y t o d i s c u s s v a r i o u s environmental issues. During the meeting, Khattar discussed the use of CNG and PNG fuels in the industrial sector and demanded a relaxation of at least one year to the industries so that by then the required infrastructure can be prepared across the state. The CM said this apart, another issue related to the Najafgarh drain was also discussed in the meeting. He informed that due to the problem of overflowing of water caused due to Najafagrh drain, water overflows in about 3000 acres of land in Gurugram. Rice exporters seek extension of interest subsidy scheme to boost shipments NEW DELHI: Rice exporters has sought an extension of the interest subsidy scheme, which ended last year, from the government as it will help in further boosting the outbound shipments of the commodity. All India Rice Exporters' Association (AIREA) President Nathi Ram Gupta said that if the extension is not considered on priority, export might decline further and also lead to the closure of a number of units due to becoming economically unviable to sustain in business. He said basmati rice has a longgestation period of six months to one year during which it has to be stored and cured for exporting and because of the
long-storage period, exporters incur a huge interest burden. Further disruption in logistics and elongating supply time due to the COVID-19 pandemic is also impacting the rice exporters, he said in a statement. "Interest accounts for a substantial margin to the overall cost of Basmati. The rice industry used to sustain and was able to maintain the growth in export due to support through the interest equalisation scheme. "The association has been knocking the doors of all authorities concerned to extend the interest equalisation (or subsidy) scheme immediately," he said. The scheme, he said, was there till
September last year. "The scheme was available till March 31, 2021, in consonance with the Foreign Trade Policy period 2015-20. However, the extant policy has now been extended up to March 31, 2022. "But, the interest equalisation scheme was last extended and available up to September 30, 2021, only and the extension of which is pending for long," Gupta added. During 2020-21, the total rice exports stood at USD 8.5 billion (USD 4 billion basmati and USD 4.5 billion nonbasmati). However, basmati exports declined 21.41 per cent during April-November 2021-22, according to the association.

Container Turnaround Times in Asia accelerate, but Europe & US Congestion prevents Supply Chain Recovery
HAMBURG: Containers are now moving in and out of China at record speeds as shippers desperately source capacity, but port congestion in Europe and the US continues to slow the return of boxes to Asia and is stymying the recovery of global ocean supply chains. According to a joint report conducted by Container xChange, the world’s leading logistics technology company, and Fraunhofer – CML, one of the world’s leading applied research organization, as the rush to get exports to buyers soared last year, the average median time containers spent in Chinese depots dropped to just five days, down from 61 days in 2020. China was not alone among leading exporters in seeing rapid box turnarounds last year. Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia recorded average median times that containers spent in depots of nine, 11, 16 and 19 days, respectively. “Once containers reach Asia, they are being redeployed at record speeds. However, the mismatch between supply and demand at many origin ports, including in China, means it is hard for US and European importers to always secure boxes unless they have planned ahead, or are working closely with their box supplier, forwarder or container line, to ensure they have both a vessel slot and a container available in advance,” commented Dr. Johannes Schlingmeier, co-founder and CEO, Container xChange. By contrast, severe congestion in many destination ports saw container dwell times at depots reach near-record levels in 2021. The worst performing countries in terms of the average median time containers spent in depots in 2021 were the U.S. and the UK which suffered average dwell times of 50 and 51 days, respectively. The next worst performers were South Africa (47 days), United Arab Emirates (40 days), Pakistan (31 days) and Germany (25 days). Dr. Johannes Schlingmeier added: “Container shipping rates have bounced back after a slight downturn in the fourth quarter with the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) breaking through the 5,000 mark at the end of December. Port congestion is a major factor. Jefferies
Equity Research found that in November last year some 36.2% of boxship capacity was at port. Until that congestion is cleared, we’ll continue to have major imbalances in the supply and demand of both vessel capacity and containers. As the Omicron variant brings more disruption, with Chinese New Year around the corner and some ports including Ningbo already facing lockdowns, we are expecting a volatile start to the year for ocean freight logistics.” The depot dwell time results were among a series of results contained in the second annual Container xChange/Fraunhofer – CML ‘C-TIMING’ study, which was undertaken to provide insights and forecasts on container shipping and was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The study found that in the US, the second-worst performer in terms of the average median time containers spent in depots in 2021, performance varied hugely by port. Across the country, average dwell times were 50 days last year(2021), down from 66 days in 2020. New York recorded 61 days of container idle time at depots followed by Houston (59 days) and Savannah (56 days). The ports of LA and LB, on average recorded 40 to 42 days of container idle time. The project on which this report is based was supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research under the funding code 01IS20004A. The responsibility for the content of this publication lies with the author.
