Govt drafting Logistics Policy with holistic & balanced approach for addressing Industry concerns : Special Secretary Logistics CII asks Centre to constitute Shipping Regulatory body NEW DELHI: Export sector is having a trying time because of the COVID -19 pandemic, particularly at the sea. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has asked the Union government to have a regulatory body for shipping in the line with Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). “It can be called National Shipping Regulatory Body which can be formed along the lines of IRDA and TRAI,” Sanjay Budhia, National Chairman of CII (Export and Import), said. Budhia said the exporters are facing several problems during exports related to freight rates, availability of containers, booking of spaces in the vessels and timely sailing.
And these are becoming costly during the pandemic situation. “This leads to the commitments getting compromised in the international markets. At every stage exporters have to struggle,” said Budhia. He said that the government would be required to help the exporters in this trying time. This is particularly when the exporters are also facing issues regarding surcharges along with procedural intricacies. “The shipping lines have imposed several small surcharges and incidental charges such as issuance of bill of lading. These are a sizable amount leading to a lot of challenges. Thus we need to have the regulatory framework,” Cont’d. Back Pg. Budhia said.
RBI to discontinue automatic caution-listing of Exporters, FIEO welcomes move NEW DELHI: The Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) has welcomed the RBI's decision of discontinuation of automatic caution-listing of exporters. Mr Sharad Kumar Saraf, President, FIEO thanked Shri Shaktikanta Das, the Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), for meeting the long pending demand of FIEO, for discontinuing the automatic caution-listing for exporters saying it was a threat, more so, since the outbreak of coronavirus as exporters were not in a position to approach
Use of IoT in supply chain will bring down product cost: NASSCOM NEW DELHI: A customer, on average, pays Rs 14 as a logistics cost for a bar of milk chocolate they buy for Rs 100 in India. Due to the automation of supply and delivery, this cost stands at Rs 9 in developed countries like the US. Tech experts say that for a chocolate company client there is a potential to save Rs 5 for every Rs 100 and automatically make the product cheaper for a common buyer. This highlights the critical role that the Internet of Things (IoT) can play in the supply chain. Sanjeev Malhotra, CEO, NASSCOM Centre of Excellence says that real-time visibility of products in the supply chain allows the user to plan their inventory even more accurately which will reduce the overall cost of production. “For perishable commodities transportation, IoT can make possible the real-time temperature monitoring and control, thereby preventing the wastage and maintaining the quality at receiving end,” Malhotra says. He adds, “These will allow the farmers to realize a higher price for their products. Real-time tracking of shipments can also allow the customers like retail chains to divert the shipment to different stores where the products may be required more urgently.” Young tech-entrepreneurs, who have entered into the supply chain automation business, say the automation of the supply chain process can save billions for Indian firms in terms of logistics cost, which consists of three elements – transportation, warehousing and administrative. banks physically to get exports realisation entries updated in the EDPMS Module. FIEO Chief added that accepting the request to do away with automatic caution-listing will provide relief to exporters particularly since in a large number of cases the entries remain non-updated at the end of Authorised Dealer (AD) Banks due to numerous factors. The onus will be on AD Banks to update exports remittance and if payment is not realised, to report the same to RBI for appropriate action. Cont’d. Back Pg.

Maersk’s first block train from China arrives in Georgia TBILISI, GEORGIA: Maersk’s intercontinental rail product portfolio expands, with the recent introduction of a block train solution connecting China and Georgia, the first such product developed specifically for the needs of Georgian imports. On 4th October 2020, the first train from Xi’an (Shaanxi province), China arrived in Tbilisi, inaugurating the new rail connection, which compliments Maersk’s current coverage of the Caucasian republics (Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia), based on Ocean shipping products. “We are extremely happy to manage the first ever block train shipment under a product based entirely on intercontinental rail. We arranged this special service specifically for Georgian customers, and we plan to develop block train solutions for the whole Caucasus Region”, comments Irakli Danelia, Georgia Commercial Representative at A.P. Moller – Maersk. In addition to providing yet another connection between Asia and Europe, further expansion of the product will also
strengthen Georgia’s role in the New Silk Road development. Xi'an has traditionally been the starting point of the Silk Road, the land routes connecting East and West for over thousand years. “We look forward to seeing the first block train shipment under Maersk’s intercontinental rail (ICR) product help Georgia and this corridor in becoming a connecting bridge between Europe and Asia”, adds Irakli Danelia. “Block train is a very important part in Maersk’s intercontinental rail service portfolio. We have made huge progress during the past years and the service has been extended to 18 corridors in 9 countries. We are seeing increasing demand for this cost-efficient, environmentally friendly mode of transportation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, with which we help our customers optimise their supply chains with resilient logistics solutions”, shares Nora Lin, Head of Logistics Products, Greater China at Maersk. The first China-Georgia block train left Xi’an on September 10th, 2020 and arrived in Tbilisi on October 4th with 41 containers on board.
NYK introduces its decarbonization efforts at International Conference on Alternative Marine Fuels TOKYO: At the virtual 21st Singapore International Bunkering Conference & Exhibition (SIBCON2020) held from October 6 to 8, NYK introduced the Group's efforts to reduce vessel GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions to zero in a panel discussion on the introduction of alternative marine fuels to reduce GHG emissions. SIBCON2020 is one of the world's largest conferences on marine fuels. The event is hosted by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and is attended by international organizations, shipping industry groups, and related companies. Toshi Nakamura, Senior General Manager of NYK’s Green Business Group, presented virtually on the third day of the event on the theme of “Alternative Fuels — Evaluating Options.” Nakamura introduced the NYK Group's efforts to accelerate further efforts of ammonia fuel and hydrogen fuel for the maritime industry, in addition to LNG as a bridging solution. The NYK Group is making efforts to create nextgeneration green businesses involving alternative marine fuels to realize decarbonation and the company’s basic philosophy of “Bringing value to life” and contributing to the betterment of societies. ※In accordance with the NYK Group’s medium-term management plan “Staying Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green,” the group is working to achieve the SDGs through its business activities, and this approach is one of the group’s initiatives.

Use of IoT in supply chain will bring down product cost: NASSCOM Cont’d. from Pg. 3
Sanket Sheth, 33, started Elixia Tech after returning from the US in 2011. He says that the use of technology will simultaneously reduce the cost of the goods and services for common consumers. Another tech entrepreneur Raghvendra Vishwanathan, 31, from Freight Bro feels that the Indian supply chain has been highly traditional, and digitalizing the process right from the factory till a product reaches the retailers is a huge business opportunity. Sheth also credits some new government policies to boost startups. “Kilometres of serpentine truck queued on state-border check-posts are history now, courtesy the introduction of E-way bills since February 2018.” E-way bills ensure that the state taxes are deposited digitally in the government accounts instead of check-posts.
“Digitalization saves time and money. Our supply chain process is automated with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and IoT (Internet of Things). Every process is tech-enabled right from dispatch planning till the product reaches to the distributors via the transport and warehouse,” says Sheth. Viswanathan considers the availability of adequate infrastructure as a prelude to the automation process of the supply chain. “First, we need to fix the infrastructure. SEZs, industrial hubs, and manufacturing units need to be hyper-connected with railways, highways, airports, and ports. Then comes the automation process of the movement of goods and services. India is on the path of reducing logistics costs in the coming years to below 10% of the total GDP in the next decade,” says Viswanathan.

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, MINISTRY OF FINANCE, DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE, CENTRAL BOARD OF INDIRECT TAXES AND CUSTOMS ROOM 512, HUDCO VISHALA BUILDING, NEW DELHI F. No. 394/86/2020-Cus(AS)
Dated : 08-10-2020
CIRCULAR NO.44/2020-CUSTOMS Sub. : Procedure for inspection of ICDs/CFSs/AFSs -reg. Kind reference is drawn to Audit Report 16 of 2018 on Working of Inland Container Depots (ICDs) and Container Freight Stations (CFSs) wherein several deficiencies have been pointed out by the Audit. Major deficiencies pointed out by the Audit are related to land area requirement, infrastructure, specified demarcated areas for imported and export goods and fumigation, adequate space for storing hazardous goods, monitoring of the movement of export and import cargo, handling of un-cleared cargo, execution of Bond, Bank Guarantee and Insurance and theft and pilferage of cargo. 2. Further the Audit, among other things, observed that there is lack of internal control including internal audit and inspection. Audit has also observed that corrective action on systemic deficiencies should not be restricted to the instances commented in audit report and all the field formations may be sensitized about the system deficiencies. 3. The Board vide Notification No. 26/2009-Customs (N.T.) dated 17.3.2009 notified Handling of Cargo in Customs Area Regulations 2009 to regulate the functioning of Customs Cargo Service Providers including custodians of ICDs/CFSs. Further, Circular 13/2009 dated 23.03.2009, Circular No. 04/2011 dated 10.01.2011, Circular No. 40/2016 dated 26.08.2016 and Circular No. 49/2018 dated 03.12.2018 were also issued to streamline various procedures relating to ICDs/CFSs. Further, D.0 letter No. 434/ 15/2017-Cus.IV dated 16.08.2019 was issued by Member (Customs) wherein, he has inter alia, stated that it is necessary that each ICD/CFS is closely monitored by way of some sort of audit /visits to ensure that the performance of ICDs/CFSs is of desired standards and requested to put a system in place and take necessary action in a time bound manner. Chief Commissioners were requested to take stock of the issues for all ICDs/ CFSs under their jurisdiction, draw a plan for time bound actions and submit an action taken report by 30th November, 2019. However, the compliance reports in response to the above letter arc not complete in many zones. Apparently, many other field formations are not checking the performance of ICDs and CFSs in their jurisdiction in a systemic way on regular basis. 4. Therefore, Board has decided to put in place a proper system for regular inspection for ICDs/CFSs. Such a system would ensure better functioning of ICDs/CFSs in future and would be of great benefit to the importers and exporters using these facilities. Periodical inspections and remedial actions would also avoid these kinds of audit objections. It will bring accountability, standardization and better facility for cross-border trading and in turn improve ease of doing business. 5. Accordingly, the Board directs that i) The jurisdictional Commissioner at the beginning of every financial year shall chalk out an action plan to conduct inspection of ICDs/CFSs in their jurisdiction, by an officer of the rank of Deputy/ Assistant Commissioner or above (who is not in-charge of such ICD/CFS) once every financial year probably in the first quarter of the financial year. ii) A report on the inspection conducted shall be submitted to the jurisdictional Commissioner of Customs with copy to Chief Commissioner concerned in the proforma given as per Annexure. iii) The first inspection, wherever required, shall be completed by 31.12.2020. iv) The jurisdictional Commissioner of Customs upon receipt of the inspection report shall take remedial action wherever deficiencies are noticed including penal action on the defaulting ICDs/CFSs. v) Normally the operations and records in respect of the previous financial year shall be covered in the inspection. vi) For the ICDs/CFSs, which have not been inspected/audited so far, the initial inspection shall be for the period of last five years or from the date of commencement whichever is earlier. vii) The Directorate General of Performance Management during the inspections of field commissionerates, done by them shall also examine the records relating to the inspections of ICDs/CFSs 6. All the field formation and stakeholders may be suitably sensitized about the circular. 7. Difficulty, if any, faced in the implementation may please be brought to the notice of the Board. Addressing the India Chamber of Commerce USA's Summit on Global Financial & Investment Leadership virtually, he said that the Indian Government is committed to being bold, open, and change. “Let's work together in the spirit of oneness. Let's engage with each other & I am sure we have a bright future for the shared prosperity of the people of the US & India.” Stating that the US-India relationship will grow from strength to
strength in the years to come, Shri Goyal said that we are at the cusp of a very enduring relationship. He said that the US & India have a long journey ahead of us working together leveraging on huge reform measures that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has taken under Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The bilateral trade between US & India grew from $126 billion dollars in 2017 to $145 dollars in 2019. The target we have
set of $500 billion dollars in the next 5 years is eminently doable.” The Minister said that India today is moving out of the past into a mindset of high-quality products, greater global engagement, and greater share of world trade. He said that this isn't time for a conservative approach, it's time for bold decisions & bold investments. Shri Goyal said that the Modi Government has a very holistic approach. “We are moving from red-tape to red-carpet. We are moving out of the shackles of the past into a more open & liberal foreign investment destination. As the Prime Minister has said, "We have to take the Indian economy out of command & control & take it towards plug & play."
Double-digit rise in Exports helps India nearly halve trade gap with China NEW DELHI: India’s robust doubledigit Exports growth to China, coupled with sharp contraction in imports, nearly halved the trade gap between the two trading partners in the first five months of the current fiscal year (2020-21, or FY21) over the same period of 2019-20 (FY20). The restriction on imports from China, along with the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, has shrunk India’s trade deficit with the neighbouring country to $12.6 billion between April and August of FY21, from $22.6 billion in the year-ago period. India’s trade deficit with China stood at $23.5 billion in the corresponding period of 2018-19 and at $26.33 billion in 2017-18. Exports to China saw sustained double-digit growth for the fourth straight month in August, led by eightfold rise in iron and steel shipments. In the April-August period, outbound shipments to Beijing
expanded 27 per cent, compared to 9.5-per cent expansion in the same period last year. Imports contracted 27 per cent in the first five months to $21.5 billion and shrunk 21 per cent in August alone. India’s exports to China grew 15 per cent in August, with shipments worth $1.68 billion, revealed the data by the Department of Commerce. Exports growth to Beijing peaked in June at 78 per cent and expanded 48 per cent in May and 23 per cent in July. India’s exports basket to China mainly accounted for iron and steel, which rose 833 per cent to $1.8 billion till August this year, compared with $192 million last year. China accounted for 35 per cent of India’s iron and steel outbound shipments in the first five months of the fiscal year, against 5.3 per cent in the corresponding period last year. China also made up for 90 per cent of India’s exports of iron ore worth
$1.6 billion, a fourth of exports of organic chemicals worth $809 million, and 16 per cent of exports of marine products worth $351 million during the five months. In FY20, exports to China were down 0.83 per cent at $16.6 billion, accounting for 5.3 per cent of total outbound shipments. For this fiscal year, China accounts for 9.1 per cent of India’s total exports till August, behind US at 17 per cent. Among India’s top five export partners, China is the only destination showing growth. Exports to the US are down 24.6 per cent. In the case of UAE, they are down 59.2 per cent. Shipments to Singapore also contracted 24.2 per cent and 26.7 per cent, respectively. I n c i d e n t a l l y, C h i n a ’ s e x p o r t s continued to expand in August, growing 9.5 per cent. In absolute terms, it was at the third-highest level ever exported by the country in a month at $235.3 billion on account of sustained demand for medical equipment and electronic items.

According to the latest data of US agency National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, total shrimp demand in United States for August is also on the higher side at 82,233 tonne as against 70,153 tonne in the year ago period. India is the largest producer of farmed shrimps in the world and accounts for nearly 6% of the global fish production. During 2019, India accounted for 2,82,584 tonne of shrimps from the total US import of 698,445 tonne. During the initial days of the lockdown, the seafood sector was working at about 20-25% capacity with most of the laboratories closed. Labour and vehicle movement was also constrained in most of the coastal states. Seed stocking and seeding was also on the lower side with farmers concerned about a glut in the market without exports. The Marine Products Export
Development Authority has reported that in the initial period of lockdown, there was 30-40% reduced stocking of shrimps by farmers. It has also led to cancellation of several orders, reduced and delayed payments, slowdown of cargo movements, difficulty in getting new orders and renewal of existing orders. Export of frozen shrimps from India to all markets during 2019-20 was pegged at 6, 52,253 tonne, which fetched foreign exchange worth $4,889.12 million. US, the largest market, is followed by China with 1, 45,710 tonne. Frozen shrimp, which ear ned Rs 34,152.03 crore ($4,889.12 million), retained its position as the most significant item in the basket of seafood exports, accounting for a share of 50.58 % in quantity and 73.21 % of the total dollar earnings. Shrimp exports during the period increased by 6.04 % in dollar value and 6.20 % in quantity.

There, however, were a few hits after the rate cut miss. To help the economy emerge from the grievous blows inflicted by the pandemic, Governor Das announced a range of new, unconventional measures to push economic activity.
Air Cargo business seen recovering as Exports rise, freight services increase NEW DELHI: Air cargo business is showing signs of recovery with a rise in exports and addition of freighter services at major airports. The cargo handled at Bengaluru airport registered a year on year growth in September - the first time since the imposition of lockdown in March. Delhi and Hyderabad airports handled 93 and 90 per cent of of the levels handled in September 2019, respectively, last month. "September has been very positive for us as we processed 32,449 metric tonnes of cargo which is 85 metric tonnes or 0.26 per cent higher than September 2019 tonnage signalling an encouraging trend," said Hari Marar, Managing Director of Bangalore Inter national Airport Limited (BIAL). Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, around 80 per cent of domestic and international freight was being carried in belly space of passenger aircraft and the remainder in freighters. Thus, with the reduction in passenger flights, air freight handled on all India basis declined 45 per cent during
April-September on a year on year basis. Bengaluru airport has been able to register positive growth during this period led by a 139 per cent increase in freighter movements in September. Additionally, airlines also began carrying cargo in passenger cabins and this contributed to volume growth. Perishable cargo has been one of the growth drivers and Bengalur u has become the leading centre for pomegranate exports. The introduction of road feeder service to connect cities like Tirupur, Coimbatore, Salem among others has also helped the airport to improve its cargo volume. Mumbai airport handled 51,977 tonnes of cargo in September which was 18 per cent higher over the August figure. The September volume was 86 per cent of January tonnage and 73 per cent of last September's figure. Recovery at Mumbai has been slower because of a cap on number of daily flights, but the airport expects a further increase with the introduction of new freighter flights and lifting of restrictions.
India's exports turned positive for the first time in the fiscal, registering 5.27 per cent growth in September. Manufacturing activity in the country too, is on the rise leading to increased freight volumes. Smaller airports, including Guwahati, Patna, Srinagar and Varanasi, have also saw gains in cargo movement last month. "Government policy interventions as well as various initiatives put in by the entire air cargo supply chain are helping the cargo industry witness recovery over the past few weeks. Calibrated unlocking of various business activities, coupled with the focus on Atma Nirbhar Bharat, is expected to sustain the air cargo tonnage," said a group spokesperson og GMR, which runs Delhi and Hyderabad airports. "At Bengaluru airport, the exports are currently growing at around 8 per cent. As economic activities are expected to return to normal levels in the coming months with the easing of restrictions, we believe this will be sustained growth. In the next 18 months, we expect annual cargo volume to reach pre-Covid-19 levels, post which we expect to see further growth," Marar said.
Transhipment Container volumes at Colombo Port edge up in August COLOMBO: Transhipment container volumes at the Port of Colombo stagnated in August, after recording a positive growth for the second straight month and reaching pre-pandemic levels in July, mainly due to an acute shortage of containers in the region, impacting the export volumes in India and Bangladesh. The container transshipment volumes grew by one percent year-onyear (YoY) to 535,162 TEUs in August, after an 11.4 percent YoY increase in J u l y. T h e k e y p o r t s i n I n d i a a n d
Bangladesh are facing an acute shortage of containers to export their goods, as the exports bounced bank in the two countries, with the easing of pandemic-related travel restrictions. Further, congestion in the Colombo Port running up to two to three weeks also contributed to delays in shipments for Indian exporters, according to media reports. The Colombo Port is the second biggest port for Indian containers and with around 70 percent of the port’s
transshipment throughput coming from India. With the marginal growth seen in transshipment volumes in August, the decline in overall volumes up to August this year narrowed to 3.5 percent YoY, reaching 3.88 million TEUs. The transshipment throughput at the Port of Colombo started to decline from March to up until end-June. Meanwhile, restowing activities rebounded to pre-COVID levels, recording 18.2 percent YoY to 14,536 TEUs in August.

Govt drafting Logistics Policy with holistic & balanced approach for addressing Industry concerns : Special Secretary Logistics CII asks Centre to constitute Shipping Regulatory body Cont’d. from Pg. 3
According to him, a regulatory body, if is constituted, would determine freight rates and other surcharges. The CII recently held a seminar on the trade facilities regarding the various issues the exporters were facing across the country. The participants included Chairman of the Kolkata Port Trust, Vinit Kumar, and Special Secretary, logistics, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Pawan Kumar Agarwal, and R. Ananth, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. Kumar said that the customer charter declaration by the shipping ministry is itself a customer-focused step. “Putting ver y strict timeline matching to the international standard is a path-breaking move. Other steps such as digitisation of freight movement from entry till onboard, installation of four mobile harbours and introduction for filling export application online for container entry etc, are very important moves,” said Kumar. Agarwal said that the Union government is drafting the new logistics policy which will follow a holistic and balanced approach for addressing the concern of the industry. This is
being done to reform the areas of logistics in shipping. A tool kit is being prepared to improve the port system of India. The Union government has given logistics segments (which helps in movements of goods) like Cold Chains, Inland Container Depots and war-houses have been given infrastructure status. “This is a testimony to the government’s commitment to improve trade facilitation,” said Agarwal. He said all these steps were taken to ease doing exports during the unprecedented COVID-19 situation. The senior officer said the ministry is working towards introduction of facilitative measures which would lead to reduction in documentation and further simplify the regulatory mechanisms. “Bringing all stakeholders on a common digital platform will help in enhancing transparency and in reducing dwell time and costs associated with trading,” said Agarwal. Ananth said the key government initiatives for the ease of trade such as implementation of Turant Customs programme, which aims to create a faceless, paperless, and contactless Customs in phases across the entire country by January 1, 2021.
RBI to discontinue automatic caution-listing of Exporters, FIEO welcomes move Cont’d. from Pg. 3
The new mechanism strikes a nice balance between the responsibilities of exporters and bankers while simultaneously ensuring that realisation of exports proceeds is constantly monitored. FIEO President also said that the changes made in the EDPMS making it more user-friendly and equitable basing it on the case-specific recommendations of the AD banks will further bring ease in the working of the exporting
community. The Reserve Bank of India introduced the Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS) in 2014 for all banks to bring their transactions with the exporters online. Hailing RBI’s Monetary Policy Statement 2020-21, the FIEO Chief said that the exporters appreciated the bank’s intent to enhance liquidity support for financial markets so as to revive activity in targeted sectors of the economy, besides providing a boost to exports sector.
Secondhand Container prices surge on Asian Box shortage LONDON: A shortage of shipping containers in Asia has seen prices for secondhand boxes skyrocket, particularly in China, according to Container xChange. A combination of container lines rolling back blanked sailings on the transpacific trade and a spike in imports from Asia into Europe in July and August as lockdowns eased has left lines struggling to return equipment to Asia. The result is lines are suffering a shortage of containers at Asian load ports for exports. A container availability index from Container xChange illustrates the problem with availability in the Port of Qingdao, China dropped from 0.7 in week 36 to 0.35 now – a value of less of 0.5 indicates a shortage of equipment. On the flip side containers are piling up at destination ports with the availability of 40-foot containers in the Port of Los Angeles standing at 0.57 on 11 September compared to 0.11 in week 35. One solution is to buy secondhand containers but as figures from Container xChange show this has become an increasingly expensive proposition especially in China. The average price for a
container manufactured between 2000 – 2005 across all Chinese ports stands at $1,744 with peak prices considerably higher. “With +115% in week 28, +90% in week 32, and +78% in week 35 compared to the average, we can see that sellers ask for higher prices due to lower container availability in Asia,” Container xChange said. Secondhand containers are considerably cheaper in European ports but need to be repositioned to Asia meaning they do not solve the immediate availability issue, as well as additional costs to move the boxes back to Asia. Prices for units built between 2000 and 2005 cost $1,262 on average in Rotterdam, $1,337 in Antwerp and $1,384 in Hamburg. The shortage in Asia looks set to continue. ”Strong demand in the US for e-commerce merchandise and medical supplies, such as personal protective equipment, will last into October, and probably beyond that. Carriers are now cutting back on additional free days of usually 20 days or more for large retailers while keeping the free storage time of three days,” Container xChange said.
Robust demand for Indian agri products in US pushing Exports: TPCI NEW DELHI: Increasing demand for India’s agricultural products like rice, spices and essential oils is helping domestic traders to boost shipments to the US, TPCI said. Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) said these exports in July grew by 15 per cent. “There is a surge in demand of Indian rice, spices and vegetables, including essential oils, soybean meal, cake and some extracts for medical use,” TPCI Chairman Mohit Singla said in a statement. He said that food and agri products of India have been seeing a sustained surge in demand during the pandemic. Singla noted that the supportive domestic ecosystem created by a policy push will further see Indian agri and food products surge in demand globally.
“Global trade shows signs of a rebound from COVID-19 as per the WTO latest estimate. The performance of the trade for the year to date exceeded expectations due to a surge in June and July as the lockdowns were eased and economic activity accelerated,” he added. Exports of rice and spices in July stood at USD 34 million and USD 24 million, respectively. Similarly, exports of vegetable saps and extracts for medical use; essential oils; and soybean meal stood at USD 24 million, USD 23 million and USD 21 million, respectively, according to TPCI. It added that in July, India sold 33,500 tonnes of rice to the US. Singla said that despite having huge orders for food products, exporters are not able to timely supply due to unavailability of containers.
