Cotton textile exports in 2021-22 touch $15.29 billion NEW DELHI: Cotton textile exports, including raw cotton, in 202122 were $15.29 billion, according to provisional data available. Manoj Kumar Patodia, Chairman of Cotton Textiles Export Promotion C o u n c i l ( Te x p r o c i l ) , s a i d t h e government target was $13.6 billion and 2020-2021 exports were $9.8 billion. All cotton textile and clothing products – yarn, fabrics, and madeups

– had seen growth, according to data with Texprocil. Exports to countries such as Bangladesh, U.S., Portugal and Sri Lanka had seen a significant jump. Executive Director of Texprocil Siddhartha Rajagopal said yarn exports to China had increased and cotton textile exports to countries such as Egypt and Portugal had also increased. It indicated that Indian exporters were finding new markets. There had been an increase in volume

of exports too, especially for yarn and fabrics. “We need to wait and watch the sustainability of this growth as there are supply chain constraints, high raw material prices, etc. These are adding to the worries of the trade,” he added. Prices of cotton may remain high and Indian exporters should rebuild their business model, factoring in high raw material prices, to remain competitive, industry sources said.

India sells record 1.4 MT wheat in April, could export 1.5 MT in May 2022 NEW DELHI: India exported a record 1.4 million tonnes of wheat in April, four trade sources said, providing some relief to grain markets as buyers scramble for alternatives to Black Sea supplies hit hard by the war in Ukraine. April is the first month of the fiscal year. India, the world's secondbiggest wheat producer, exported a record 7 million tonnes of the grain in fiscal 2021-22. India exported a record 1.4 million tonnes of wheat in April, four trade sources said, providing some relief to grain markets as buyers scramble for alternatives to Black Sea supplies hit hard by the war in Ukraine.

April is the first month of the fiscal year. India, the world's secondbiggest wheat producer, exported a record 7 million tonnes of the grain in fiscal 2021-22. India is the only major supplier of wheat at this time of year, and its exports of the grain have surg .. It exported just 242,857 tonnes of wheat in April 2021. With the new season crop gathered in April, wheat shipments could rise further this month. "In May, shipments could rise to 1.5 million tonnes," said a New Delhibased dealer with a global trading firm. "Wheat supplies and railway cars' availability have improved in the

last few weeks and that will help ship out more wheat in May." Buyers from Asia and the Middle East are purchasing Indian wheat, as it is cheaper than alternatives, he said. India has exported wheat to South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa. As supplies dropped from Ukraine and Russia, which together used to account for about 29% of global wheat exports, top wheat importer Egypt agreed for the first time to purchase the grain from India. India also exported wheat to other new markets such as Israel, Turkey, Indonesia, Mozambique, and Tanzania, traders said.

Negotiations going on for signing of FTAs with the UK, EU and Canada: MoS Anupriya Patel NEW DELHI: India was expected to conclude free trade agreements with the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union before this year-end, Union Minister Anupriya Patel said here on Tuesday, 10th May 2022. The Minister of State in Commerce and Industry said the country's trade was "passing through a watershed moment" as it clocked USD 675 billion on exports while merchandise exports accounted for USD 419 billion last year.

"We (The Ministry) are also in process of negotiations on the signing of free trade agreements with the United Kingdom, Canada, and Russia and they may be concluded before the end of the year," she said. Pa t e l w a s s p e a k i n g a t t h e Stakeholder's Outreach Programme organised by Directorate General of Foreign Trade on the occasion of India signing a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the United Arab Emirates and the E c o n o m i c C o o p e r a t i o n Tr a d e

Agreement (ECTA) with Australia. Noting that exports are vital for the growth of a country, she said India concluded the agreement with Australia in just 88 days and it was one of the fastest-ever agreement signed. "It is a very comprehensive agreement," she said. She pointed out that the IndiaUAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement was already "operationalised" and there was huge scope in ter ms of employment generation.

Indian Imports from Russia rises 3 times since Ukraine crises NEW DELHI: India’s imports from Russia witnessed a more than threefold jump to $4.67 billion from a year before since the Ukraine conflict began on February 24, despite pressure from Western nations. The surge in shipments from Russia is thanks to New Delhi’s efforts to strike good deals with Russian suppliers to tide over a growing shortfall of crude oil and other inputs like coal and fertilisers. However, the Country’s exports to Russia crashed 57% year-on-year to just $266 million during this period, mainly due to logistics and payment issues in the aftermath of Western s a n c t i o n s o n M o s c o w, s o u r c e s familiar with the matter said. Between February 24 and May 8, India’s purchases of crude oil from Russia jumped 393% to $1.86 billion, while those of petroleum products surged 175% to $560 million, said one of the sources, citing preliminary data. Similarly, imports of coal, coke and briquettes, etc, climbed 277% to $630 million, and fertiliser purchases saw a multi-fold jump to $376 million from $43 million. Of course, the growth in import value is aided by a rise in global commodity prices in recent months and a relatively low base. Trade sources said tidy chunks of these purchases were contracted before the war had begun in late February. They said, apart from oil and petroleum products, the surge in coal imports would continue unabated especially during the summer, as a power crisis looms over a vast swathe of the country. Threequarters of the electricity produced in India uses coal and the country imports just under a quarter of its annual consumption of the raw material. Similarly, fertiliser imports

from Russia, too, may continue, as crisis-ridden Ukraine, another supplier to India, isn’t in a position to ship out the key farm input. The government, too, is seeking to keep local supplies steady ahead of the Kharif sowing season. Importantly, the surge in imports from Moscow suggests New Delhi, a net importer of commodities, has remained steadfast in its commitment to chart its own path despite mounting Western pressure to shun “cheap” Russian oil, especially when its critics themselves are larger buyers of Russian fossil fuels. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently defended the move, saying: “I will put my country’s interest first and energy security first. If oil is available and at a discount, why shouldn’t I buy it?” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, too, has decried the “campaign” against India on oil imports from Russia. India’s total oil purchases from Russia in a month would probably be less than what Europe does in an afternoon, he said recently. Russia was reportedly offering discounts of as much as $30-35 per barrel on its flagship Urals grade to woo India. Interestingly, according to a report, Russia exported fossil fuels

worth $63 billion in the first two months of the Ukraine conflict, with most going to the EU. The largest importers of Russian coal, oil and gas were Germany, Italy and China. I n t e r e s t i n g l y, t h e d a t a compiled by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air show even the US imported more fossil fuels from Russia than India during this period. However, Indian exporters haven’t yet been able to supply much to Russia in the wake of the war, as shipping lines are reluctant to take bookings to and from Russia. This has hit the despatches of dry cargo, said trade sources. Moreover, some payments for goods supplied to Russia even before the war are still stuck, as the US and its European allies have blocked select key Russian banks from the SWIFT financialmessaging infrastructure for crossborder payment. Of course, the payment crisis has eased considerably in recent weeks and several Russian firms have evinced greater interest in sourcing more from India. However, given the supply-chain disr uptions, many domestic exporters still remain jittery and are awaiting the war to be over. Exports of drug formulations and biologicals dropped 41% to $60 million, while those of bulk dr ugs and intermediates eased 19% to $17 million between February 24 and May 8. Marine product exports collapsed 91% to just $2 million; telecom instr ument despatches dropped 20% to $32 million; and iron & steel shipments plunged 56% to $14 million. India’s exports to Russia hit $3.3 billion in FY22, while its imports stood at $9.79 billion, said one of the sources. New Delhi’s trade deficit is all set to widen in the current fiscal.

DG Shipping allows 1 Yr relaxation to Ship Builders getting benefits under financial assistance policy NEW DELHI: The Shipping Ministry has allowed a one year relaxation to ship builders that are getting financial assistance from the centre. In an office order, the Director General Shipping (DGS) has been allowed to provide a relaxation of up to one year for constr uction, and delivery of vessels for contracts signed during March 24, 2021 and March 31, 2022. This is being done in view of the spread of COVID variants that has affected the global supply chain system. The Centre has approved financial assistance for 47 vessels amounting to Rs 155 crore under the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFA).

The total contract value of these ships stands at Rs 850 crore. The Shipping Ministry had said that 95 applications have been received till now seeking an inprinciple approval for 170 vessels with contract value of Rs 2,620 crore. The guidelines of the policy have been in force from April 1, 2016 and shall be applicable for shipbuilding contracts signed between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2026. Under the SBFA policy, 21 shipyards having various capacities have registered under the scheme. Prominent companies registered under the scheme include L&T Shipbuilding Ltd, Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Titagarh Wagons Ltd and Goa Shipyard Ltd.

“Financial assistance is being granted to Indian shipyards equal to 20 per cent of the lower of contract price or the fair price or actual payments received of each vessel built by them for a period of at least 10 years commencing 2016-17. This rate of 20 per cent will be reduced by 3 per cent every three years,” said a Shipping Ministry statement. Under the policy, only those vessels, which are constructed and delivered within three years from the date of contract, shall be eligible for availing financial assistance. In case of specialised vessels, the Centre can grant an in-principle approval for construction and delivery of such vessels for up to six years.

Exporters’ likely to fetch better value for overseas shipments, pegged to dollar However, a depreciating rupee is set to worsen inflationary conditions as India is a net importer NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: India’s traditional exports such as IT, agricultural produce, textiles, tea, leather and engineering goods could gain a competitive edge amid the sharp decline in the rupee. Exporters said they are likely to fetch better value for their overseas shipments, especially in markets pegged to the dollar. However, a depreciating rupee is set to worsen inflationary conditions as India is a net importer, with the trade deficit widening to a record $192.24 billion last fiscal. High fuel and food inflation have already forced the central bank to raise the benchmark policy rate by a sharp 40 basis points. Agriculture exports are likely to do well if the rupee weakens further, an official said, adding rice and wheat exports will be particularly competitive and help exporters fetch more orders. Notably, agriculture exports comprised 11.4% of total exports in 2021, as per a brokerage report. Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman of Farida Group, one of India’s largest shoe manufacturers and exporters, said that while rupee depreciation may prove to be a short-term benefit, “it does help to get a little bit more money.” “But most exporters have an element of import also, like the raw materials, and transportation cost.

That sort of equalises it for us,” he said. “Rupee depreciation will help us compete against other currencies like those of Bangladesh and China, which are also low,“ Ahmed added. However, tea exporters said the benefits of a weaker rupee may not be seen across the board. “Rupee depreciating won’t be a blanket benefit. We will only gain in export destinations that are pegged to the dollar because the Indian rupee has depreciated against the US dollar but has appreciated against the euro and yen on a yearon-year basis,” said Anshuman Kanoria, Chairman of the Indian Tea Exporters Association. “So we can benefit in Russia but not in the EU and Japan. We would also benefit in UAE.” Russia is among India’s top markets for tea and the Sri Lankan economic crisis has opened new markets for India’s orthodox tea exporters. Anupam Shah, former Chairman of the Engineering Exports Promotion Council (EEPC) said the rupee’s depreciation will definitely help increase exports but the extent of benefits will depend on a slew of factors including global demand, raw material prices, inflation and the Ukraine war. Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda was of

the view that since India typically imports more than it exports, “so ultimately, India will pay more for our imports in case of currency depreciation.” “Besides, when the currency depreciates, FPIs are tempted to invest. It will be important to see what RBI does. That will decide the rupee’s range,” he added. Abhay Sinha, DG, Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) said the rupee depreciation will make imports costlier, which will push up the cost of production in sectors where import content requirement is high. “Rupee depreciation will affect import intensive sectors making them costlier. Costlier imports and cheaper exports in import intensive sectors will reduce profit margins of Indian exports in certain sectors, particularly few sectors in merchandise exports,” he said. India’s exports of manufactured goods have risen from 1.4% in 2010 to 1.8% in 2019, with broad-based improvement. But this remains much lower than peers. China’s manufacturing export share stands at 18%, Taiwan’s at 2.4%, Korea’s at 3.7% and Mexico’s at 2.8%, a Morgan Stanley report said. India’s participation in global supply chains remains low, especially compared to other countries, such as East Asian economies.

"During FY22, NHAI has awarded projects for a total length of 6,306 km of projects, which is the highest length awarded by the authority in the last three years," the statement said. The NHAI is the main road construction agency of the Ministry of R o a d Tr a n s p o r t a n d H i g h w a y s (MoRTH). "In construction also, NHAI achieved the feat of highest length of projects constructed in a financial year in the last three years. "In FY22, NHAI constructed a total

length of 4,325 km, which is higher than 4,218 km in FY21 and 3,979 km in FY20," it added. Also, according to the statement, NHAI achieved the highest length of projects started (appointed dates declared) in a financial year. Rivigo relaunches National Freight Index; 4-5% rise in average freight rates between Jan – Apr 2022 GURUGRAM: Rivigo, an Indiabased technology company in the logistics sector has relaunched the National Freight Index (NFI) to bring pricing transparency in freight rates for the progress of the sector. Rivigo has relaunched the NFI recently after more than two years to publish daily rates for container trucks, which will ensure transparency in the road-freight marketplace. The NFI, which is completely tech-driven, will serve the objective of providing easy access to daily freight prices for truck owners, transporters, and other stakeholders in the sector and further establish trust and transparency in the highly fragmented logistics and supply chain market. NFI is an open-source data portal based on a proprietary

algorithm that collects inputs from multiple data sources to give out the most accurate daily rates. Commenting on this, Deepak Garg, CEO and Founder of Rivigo said, “We are very optimistic about creating a platform for fleet owners and transporters, which will enable the growth of the logistics sector. Currently, we are at a stage where the growth of the economy is creating a balance between the supply and demand in the market, which will confidently lead to sustainable freight pricing and profitability for small fleet owners and road freight operations. “By reintroducing our National Freight Index, we want to empower small freight owners, transporters, advisors, consultants, and the market at large, which relies on this data actively.

Going forward, we plan to launch the National Freight Forum, a collaborative platfor m for stakeholders of the logistics industry. By introducing such platforms, Rivigo aims to uplift the industry with technology, digital tools and other supportive services that will bring trust and transparency in the sector”, he added. The insights gathered through NFI from January 2022 onwards reveal a 4-5% increase in April 2022 freight rates as compared to January 2022 on the back of rising input costs of fuel, toll, and commercial vehicles. While a dip was observed in freight rates ex-North owing to supply accumulation, a surge was noticed in South freight prices, which was higher than input cost increases, to counter the observed price dip in North on return loads ex-South and West.

MACN launches Global Port Integrity Platform DENMARK: MACN’s Global Port Integrity Platform (GPLP) uses 50,000 incident reports since 2011 and vetted external data sources to provide users comparative risk profiles in terms of corruption. The organisation sees it as “gamechanger” as currently there is no standard for comparing integrity risks at different ports. The platform was made available to MACN members on 27 April. MACN Associate Director, Martin Benderson, said, “GPIP will allow charterers, cargo owners, and shipping

companies to compare ports’ integrity performance and identify risks when trading. For seafarers and shipping companies, GPIP will provide dynamic data that will help empower the industry to ‘Say No’ to corruption by making it easier to assess risk and prepare for calling ports in high-risk locations. GPIP will show very clearly what problems are most common and what challenges seafarers can expect to encounter.” At launch the platform includes data on 106 ports in 50 countries and MACN has ambitions to double this

number by end 2022. The platform can also act as an engagement tool to work with ports and terminal operators to take action against corrupt practices. Dr Antonis Michail, Technical Director, International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), said: “Port risk and resilience is one the of strategic focus areas of IAPH, and M A C N ’ s G l o b a l Po r t I n t e g r i t y Platform is a tool that will help put the spotlight on the importance of anticorr uption measures in port and terminals worldwide.”

Uzbekistan can be gateway for India to Eurasian market : Uzbek Minister U Z B E K I S TA N : U z b e k i s t a n’ s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Furkat Sidikov recently said that his Country can be a gateway for Indian businessmen to get access to the Eurasian market. The Uzbek Minister also expressed his Country’s interest in accessing the Chabahar Port, being developed by India in Iran for improving logistics. “You know that now traditional supply chains are not working well. So in this case, I see that Uzbekistan can be a getaway for Indian businessmen to get

access to Eurasian markets. India is one of the biggest investors in Uzbekistan,” Sidikov said. He further added there is one issue of logistics and now they will work with the Government of India and would like to use Chabahar. Uzbek Deputy Foreign Minister said that India is a tested and reliable partner for Uzbekistan. “We always had a strong political relationship, we share the same border and the same approach to international issues, regional issues and security

issues,” Sidikov said. Talking about the growth in IndiaUzbekistan relations, Sidikov said, “I would love to say India- Uzbekistan always enjoy a trusted relationship. We s h a r e t h e s a m e v a l u e s a n d traditions. India and Uzbekistan share 30 years of diplomatic relationship. In real life, we have a long term history.” Touching upon the historical ties between the two countries, Sidikov mentioned Babur, who hailed from present-day Uzbekistan, as well as the Mughal era.
