Switzerland’s decision to eliminate import duties limits FTA utility for India NEW DELHI: Switzerland’s policy to allow tariff-free entry for all industrial goods from all countries significantly limits India’s prospects of gains from India and t h e E u r o p e a n F r e e Tr a d e Association (EFTA) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that is currently being negotiated, a report by think t a n k G l o b a l Tr a d e R e s e a r c h Initiative (GTRI) said on Monday. Switzerland’s decision that took effect on January 1, 2024 has resulted in abolition of tariffs on products, including chemicals, consumer goods, vehicles, clothing. Switzerland is India’s top export destination in EFTA and the import duty abolition means that Indian products would face a higher degree of competition in Switzerland despite a FTA with EFTA. Notably, EFTA countries are not part of the European Union. EFTA comprises Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland which is an intergovernmental organization for
the promotion and intensification of free trade. India’s exports to EFTA countries during 2022-23 stood at $1.92 billion as against $1.74 billion in 2021-22. Imports aggregated at $16.74 billion during the last fiscal as compared to $25.5 billion in 2021-22. “Industrial goods, which account for 98 per cent of India’s $1.3 billion merchandise exports to Switzerland in FY2023, are directly impacted. Additionally, exporting agricultural produce to Switzerland remains challenging due to the complex web of tariffs, quality standards, and approval requirements. EFTA, including Switzerland, has shown no inclination to make agriculture tariffs zero on most basic agricultural produce. Consequently, with zero industrial tariffs and the difficulty in exporting agricultural produce to Switzerland, India’s prospective gains in merchandise exports are effectively nullified,” the think tank said.
India pushing its textiles through free trade deals NEW DELHI: India is pitching for greater market access for its textiles sector as part of the free trade deals, which are under negotiations with countries like the United Kingdom and Oman, Textiles Secretary Rachna Shah said recently. “Textiles would be one of our major interests in getting more concessional access,” Shah told reporters. India is negotiating free trade deals with several countries including the United Kingdom, Oman and the European Union. Shah said India’s textiles exports have been impacted in the current fiscal due to poor demands in the US and European countries. “While we are continuing to strengthen our ties with these markets we are also looking at other markets,” she said. According to Shah, the other markets where India is pushing its textiles exports include Australia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan. India has already signed free trade pacts with these countries. Shah said the government targets to boost textiles production through the initiatives like production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel (PM-MITRA) parks. Under the PM-MITRA scheme, seven mega textiles clusters are proposed to be set up in as many states – Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Talking to DH, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles Rohit Kansal said land acquisition work for almost all the seven proposed textiles parks has been completed. In Karnataka, the textiles park will be set up in Kalaburagi district. The state government has allocated 1000 acres of land for the textiles park near Ferozabad at KalaburagiJewargi Road in Kalaburagi district.
The trade imbalance between India and Switzerland further complicates the scenario, GTRI said. In FY2023, India’s imports from Switzerland stood at $15.79 billion, in stark contrast to its exports of $1.34 billion, leading to a substantial trade deficit of $14.45 billion. “Gold, accounting for 80% of India’s imports from Switzerland, is a critical factor for the FTA. If the FTA does not include gold, it may not meet the WTO Article XXIV condition for FTAs to have duty cuts on substantial trade. Switzerland has large historical accumulations of Gold and it primarily refines imported Gold. Such Gold cannot meet the Rules of Origin conditions of Minimum value addition of even 5%. Switzerland may insist upon replacing value addition or tariff transformation conditions with specific processes like refining conditions. India must tread cautiously,” GTRI said.

Gujarat Govt to set up 10 Greenfield Ports in the next 25 years
GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has initiated a survey of 10 Greenfield sites along the state’s coastline for potential major port development. This move comes after 28 years, with the last port established
being Mundra Port in 1995. According to a newspaper report, to enhance port development in the state, a preliminary list of 10 potential sites has been identified for the establishment of major ports. Techno-feasibility studies have been launched to assess factors such as connectivity, land availability, draft (water depth required for ships to float), and other relevant aspects at these sites. The 10 identified sites, as invited by the GMB, include Nargol in Valsad,
Modhva in Kutch, Mithi Virdi in Bhavnagar, Positra in Dwarka, Dahej in Bharuch, Kuchdi in Porbandar, Sartanpar in Bhavnagar, Jakhau in Kutch, New Hazira in Surat, and Chanch in Amreli. The state government plans to set up these ports over a 25-year period. Alongside the development of Greenfield ports, an assessment of the potential for expanding existing brownfield ports will also be undertaken.
Adani Ports enters bond market for the first time in 2 years MUMBAI: As A d a n i G r o u p companies are seeing a massive boom in shares prices, Adani Ports has decided to enter the bonds market for the first time in two years. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone entered the bond market and garnered a heavy demand for their issue on the first day itself. Adani Ports, which is India’s largest private port operator, started accepting bids aggregating to 5 billion
rupees ($60.2 million) for two listed bonds, with one maturing in five years and the other in 10 at coupons of 7.80% and 7.90%, respectively. This decision of the company comes shortly after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Hindenburg report against Adani Group, where the bench ruled that the company will not undergo any additional investigation apart from SEBI’s ongoing probe. While Adani Ports received bids of up to 10 billion, the firm accepted half of this amount. According to three
merchant bankers, the bidding parties included top banks and insurance firms in India. The higher coupon may have been offered to appease investors, as the group is currently gauging demand, said Venkatakrishnan Srinivasan, founder and managing partner at Rockfort Fincap. Adani Ports last tapped the bond market in October 2021, raising 10 billion rupees at 6.25% coupon. Trust Investment Advisors was the sole arranger to this issue.
Uttar Pradesh Government taps Russia, Gulf markets for farm exports LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government is tapping Russia and the Gulf markets to export horticultural crops in a bid to boost the rural economy and provide remunerative prices to the state’s farmers. The Government has exported a consignment of guava to Oman even as more bulk orders are expected. Earlier, a shipment of mangoes was sent to Russia, which fetched the local farmers almost 10 times higher prices than local rates. 'The exported mango fetched Rs 800 per kg price in Russia compared to an average price of Rs 80 per kg in the local markets,' said Dinesh Pratap Singh, minister of state (independent charge) Horticulture Agriculture Marketing
Agriculture Foreign Trade and Agriculture Export Department. In 2021-22, the State had exported 160,000 tonnes of vegetables to Gulf countries through air routes. Singh said the Government was taking multiple steps to double the farmers’ income and facilitate farm exports. 'Several crops grown in UP are gaining traction in the export market and contributing to the government’s agenda of boosting farm income,' he said. The State is also looking to expand the export market spectr um to European countries. It is also setting up modern packhouses to catalyse farm exports. The Government is motivating
farmers to cultivate crops which have a higher export potential. It is promising assistance related to far mers’ training, subsidy and marketing support. UP is among the top agricultural and horticultural producers in India with leadership positions in a variety of crops including sugarcane and potato. Higher farm shipments will give a fillip to the agrarian economy of the state and accelerate socio-economic growth by promoting ‘agri-prenuers’ and food processing. Meanwhile, UP has clocked 3.5 million tonnes (MT) in paddy procurement in the current kharif marketing season 2023-24.

SMP Kolkata in talks with Bangladesh Government for dry bulk cargo export KOLKATA: To ensure there is no pilferage during transhipment operations of dry bulk cargo during export, officials of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust, Kolkata, are learnt to have recently got in touch with the Bangladesh administration for establishing a channel of communication for accountability of goods. The Kolkata Port, last year, had approached the Customs for clearance to start transhipment operations in dry bulk cargo destined for Bangladesh. This will be a first time initiative by the port since it has so far only dealt with liquid cargo during lighterage operations. However, the Customs, Kolkata had expressed apprehension about such a proposal since in case of dry bulk cargo there can be theft while the consignment
is enroute to Bangladesh unlike liquid cargo that can be easily transferred from one ship to another without chances of pilferage. A port official said that the Indian Customs is presently not in a position that it can get information from Bangladesh Customs on whether a cargo has reached there safely and in the same quantity. “A system needs to be set up where information can reach India from Bangladesh about after the arrival of cargo there,” he said. Presently, the Kolkata Port Chairman, Rathendra Raman told that he along with other officials had recently visited Bangladesh to meet their officials from the administration. He said: “Our team went to Bangladesh. We had a detailed meeting and they requested us that this issue be pitched separately. We have already sent a letter. It’s in the process. Our request has gone to the
Bangladesh Authority.” Earlier, Hitesh Godara, IRS, Commissioner, Customs, Kolkata, had told that it is not possible to pilferage liquid cargo such as LPG or Propane but such is not the case with dry bulk cargo which can be stolen while the ship is bound for Bangladesh. He said that the Indian side of Customs is in talks with their Bangladesh counterpart to set up a mechanism for exchange of information relating to the arrival of cargo. Sources said that in the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) meeting held in Kolkata on Monday, it was highlighted how the Kolkata Port, in recent times, has developed on its connection with the Bangladesh ports due to the improved connectivity of the IndoBangladesh Protocol Route for trade. This route has enabled transportation of cargo to North East India via Bangladesh Ports.
Land Ports to be gender friendly, inclusive in next 3 years : LPAI Chairman NEW DELHI: Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) Chairman Aditya Mishra on Tuesday conveyed the vision of his department to make land ports also known as Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) “gender friendly, neutral and inclusive in the next three years”. Mishra made the statement while releasing the LPAI’s report titled “Engendering Land Ports in India.” The report brings to light the findings of the application of the gender audit toolkit and gender assessment undertaken at three select land ports in India– ICP Agartala, ICP Petrapole and ICP Raxual. The report sheds light on the importance of improving gender
responsiveness of land ports, a crucial initiative of the Government of India as part of efforts towards improved infrastructure facilities and policy reforms for promoting crossborder trade in Bhutan, Bangladesh, Northeast India and Nepal (BBIN) region. LPAI, a statutory body working under the Ministry of Home Affairs, in its report, has also mentioned its vision, pointing out that it has set a target to make all land ports gender friendly in the coming three years. “As part of this, the LPAI had organised a webinar on gender mainstreaming in ICPs, which recommended among other needs for
a study of ICPs in India from the s t a n d p o i n t o f g e n d e r mainstreaming,” the LPAI said. The study aimed “to develop a framework for gender-inclusive cross-border trade and tourism through land ports in India.” The focus of the study was to map the existing infrastr ucture and ser vices at select land ports to understand the gaps in promoting women’s participation in crossborder trade and tourism. The key purpose was to recommend specific action areas and initiatives, within the purview of LPAI, that can be undertaken to make the land ports gender responsive.
India’s growth to remain robust in 2025: World Bank NEW DELHI : World Bank has said growth in Indian economy is expected to remain strong during next financial year, driven by robust investment and services activity. Against its projection of 6.3% expansion in 2023, the latest Global Economic Prospects has now pegged GDP growth at 6.4% in 2024 and 6.5% in 2025 (In India’s case, World Bank follows financial year). Government’s advance estimates, released on Friday, estimated that Indian economy will grow 7.3% during the current financial year. At the projected growth rate, India will retain its crown as the world’s fastest growing major economy.
The multilateral agency said that investment, while decelerating marginally, will remain robust on the back of support from healthy corporate and bank balance sheets as well as public investment. This will come even as the World Bank expects consumption demand to taper off due to high inflation and a fall in postpandemic pent-up demand. Over the next few months, the election related uncertainty may impact foreign investment, it warned. Global growth is expected to slow to 2.4%, marking the third straight year of moderation, according to World Bank estimates. “Growth rates in advanced economies as a whole and in China are projected to slow in
2024 to well below their 2010-19 average paces,” it said. China is expected to slow down to 4.5% in 2024. The report cautioned against downside risks emanating from conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, which would put pressure on energy prices, as well as risks to the financial system due to higher interest rates, weaker growth in China and trade fragmentation. While commodity prices cooled in 2023, they remained 40% above the pre-pandemic level. While oil prices are likely to edge down to $81 a barrel, due to weak growth in China, the World Bank war ned of the adverse impact of the recent attacks in the Red Sea.

Over the next ve years, the Adani Group will invest over Rs. two lakh crore in Gujarat : Gautam Adani Cont’d. from Pg. 2
It ignited a nationwide movement as all our states marched for ward – competing – and – cooperating – to fundamentally remodel India’s industrial landscape. The statistics of the past decade are remarkable: Since 2014, India's GDP has grown by 185%, and per capita income by a stunning 165%. This achievement is unparalleled, especially considering this decade's geopolitical conflicts and pandemic challenges. “Hon’ble Prime Minister, your achievements on the international stage are equally remarkable. You have taken us from a country seeking a voice on global platforms to a nation that now creates the global platforms. The Solar Alliance platform, an initiative you conceptualized, and your leadership at the G20 platform, set a benchmark for a more inclusive world order. Adding the Global South to the G20 is a defining moment in modern history. “Hon’ble Prime Minister, you don't just predict the future; you shape it. You have reoriented India to become the world’s fastest growing nation, and positioned her as the global social champion driven by the twin philosophies of Vasudeva Kutumbakam and Vishwa Guru.
And the best is yet to come. With your foresight in harnessing India's youth to build a Vikshit Bharat and make India a fully developed nation by 2047, you have ensured that the India of today is poised to shape the global future of tomorrow. “Hon’ble Chief Minister, at the previous summit, I announced our investment of over Rs. 55,000 crore by 2025. We have already surpassed Rs. 50,000 crore across the various sectors I had promised and have vastly exceeded our target of 25,000 direct and indirect jobs. To d a y, I c o m m i t t o f u r t h e r i n v e s t m e n t s . We are constructing the world's largest green energy park in Khavda, Kutch, generating 30 GW of renewable energy over 725 square kilometres, even visible from space. We are expanding the green supply chain for an "Atmanirbhar" Bharat and creating the largest integrated renewable energy ecosystem. This includes solar panels, wind turbines, hydrogen electrolysers, green ammonia, PVC, and expansions in copper and cement production. “Over the next five years, the Adani Group will invest over Rs. two lakh crore in Gujarat – that is USD 25 billion – thereby creating over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs. I am grateful for your support. It is my commitment that I will do my part to contribute to a Vikshit Gujarat.”
