MOL Group & Mitsui E&S Machinery to commence joint study to introduce hydrogen fuel Port Cargo handling machineries Introducing New Port Cargo Handling Machineries in Port of Kobe to Aim for Zero Emission TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) recently announced that it has agreed with Mitsui E&S Machinery, Ltd. (Mitsui E&S Machinery; President: Ichiro Tanaka; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo) to commence joint study to introduce Hydrogen fuel port cargo handling machineries. As part of this agreement, MOL's group company Shosen Koun Co., Ltd. (President: Hiroyuki Nakahi; Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Kobe) has signed a contract for a new near zero emission (NZE) rubber-tired gantry (RTG) container yard crane and decided to introduce it at the MOL-operated Kobe International Container Terminal (KICT). Shosen Koun signed a contract for the "Near Zero Emission (NZE) Transtainer® RTG crane" (NZE RTG), developed by Mitsui E&S Machinery. Thanks to the smaller size of its diesel engine, the NZE RTG improved the fuel consumption by 20-30%, and reduces emissions of CO2 and other harmful substances in diesel exhaust in

comparison with a conventional one. In addition, looking ahead to the spread of a hydrogen supply infrastructure in the future, Shosen Koun decided to introduce the NZE RTG because the engine specifications make it possible to achieve zero emissions by changing the power source to a hydrogen fuel cell (FC) power unit instead of diesel generator. KICT is the first facility in Japan, to adopt the NZE RTG, and it is slated to be introduced around end of May 2022. In addition, because the introduction of the NZE RTG matches the concept of Carbon Neutral Port (CNP), which is an initiative of Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Tr a n s p o r t a n d To u r i s m a i m e d a t a c h i e v i n g decarbonization in ports and harbors, MOL Group is working closely with Mitsui E&S Machinery to realize the achievement of CNP. Addressing environmental issues in line with the MOL Group Environmental Vision, the MOL Group implements ongoing group-wide efforts to achieve sustainable net zero GHG emission.

DP World & Ministry of Transport of Ethiopia sign MoU for the development of the Ethiopian side of the Berbera Corridor •MoU paves way for formal discussions on potentials to develop the corridor to unlock economic benefits •DP World and its partners envisage investing up to US$1bn in developing supply chain infrastructure along the corridor ADDIS ABABA/DUBAI: DP World, a leading global provider of end to end logistics solutions, and the Ministry of Transport, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of developing the Ethiopian side of the road linking Ethiopia to Berbera into one of the major trade and logistics corridors of the Country’s international trade routes. The MoU, which was signed in Addis Ababa today by Her Excellency, Dagmawit Moges, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport, and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, follows a decision by the two parties to explore the potentials for developing logistics infrastructure and the provision of end to end logistics services along the corridor to unlock major economic benefits for Ethiopia. In terms of the MoU, it is proposed that the Parties would establish a joint venture logistics company to perform logistic operations from origin to destination. It is intended that for export, DP World will offer services from origin in Ethiopia up to Berbera Port, while for imports, it will offer from the port of loading to the delivery of shipments in one of the dry ports in the hinterlands or the final destination of the consignees. DP World and its partners envisage investing up to US$1bn over the next ten years in developing the supply chain infrastructure along the corridor. This will include dry ports, silos, warehouses, container yards, cool and cold chain depots, freight forwarding and clearing activities. The infrastructure investment will be in parallel with the implementation of the latest IT infrastructure and technology to ensure the efficient functioning of the corridor, and smooth, secure and transparent transfer of cargo throughout the entire transportation journey. The MoU also envisages that the Ministry of Transport will see to it that a review and resolution of regulatory obstacles facing the Ethiopian side of the Berbera Corridor are exercised with a view to ensuring competitive arrangements for logistics companies so that they could be able to use the Corridor on a common user basis. Speaking at the signing, H.E. Dagmawit Moges, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport, said: “As we kick off the journey towards prosperity, aiming at unlocking Ethiopia's development potentials designed to propel the country into becoming an African beacon of prosperity, the transformation of the logistics industry is expected to play the leading catalytic role. Ethiopia aims to diversify its port access facilities and services to improve its trade corridor access routes; utilizing the Berbera corridor will surely have a potential to make Ethiopia a front runner in

logistics operations, boosting the competitive advantage of delivering our products to the world market. The development of this Corridor will not only meet with the growing demand of Ethiopian’s international trade, but it would also enhance our Nation’s capacity in utilizing our existing major corridor both in terms of volume of trade and efficiency.” Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said: “As a leading global provider of trade and logistics solutions, we strongly believe that developing the Berbera Corridor into one of the major trade and logistics corridors will unlock huge economic benefits for Ethiopia, and support its ambitious development plans. It will create new jobs, attract new businesses and investment along the corridor, as well as diversify and strengthen the country’s access to international trade by having a direct, seamless and efficient link between Ethiopia and Berbera Port.” The road infrastructure that will connect Berbera Port to Wajaale at the border with Ethiopia, funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the UK’s Department for International Development, is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. The road will link to the existing modern highway on the Ethiopian side and will further position Berbera as one of the key trade gateways in the region and will be one of the fastest and most efficient routes for Ethiopian transit cargo. DP World has committed to investing up to US$442 million to develop and expand Berbera port, with the first phase nearly completed. Further work is already underway on expansion of the quay to 1000 metres which will increase capacity to two million TEUs, operated by 10 quay cranes.

HyTrucks consortium aims to have 300 hydrogen-powered trucks on the road in Belgium by 2025 ANTWERP: Air Liquide, DATS 24 and Port of Antwerp join forces in the HyTrucks consortium to deploy 300 hydrogen-powered trucks and the related renewable hydrogen production infrastructure and supply chain assets in Belgium as part of the HyTrucks initiative. This project aims at enabling in total 1,000 hydrogen-powered zero-emission trucks on the roads and building the adequate infrastr ucture connecting Belgium, the Netherlands and western Germany by 2025. The partnership aims to deploy hydrogen-powered trucks mainly in the area around the Port of Antwerp and major logistics hubs in Belgium. Hydrogen trucks will be used for intensive local and international transport. The HyTrucks initiative is one of the largest European projects to deploy zero-emission heavy-duty fleets in Europe’s most intense traffic areas. It aims at reducing significantly CO2 emissions by an estimated amount of more than 100,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to 110 million kilometers driven, thanks to 1,000 trucks, and a first network of 25 high-capacity hydrogen stations connecting Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Duisburg. In Belgium, the HyTrucks project aims at reducing CO2 emissions by an estimated amount of more than 30,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to 33 million kilometres driven. Clean hydrogen is one of the energy carriers particularly suited for heavy-duty vehicles that enables the reduction of greenhouse gases, urban pollution, and dependency on fossil fuels. On top of reducing CO2 emissions, hydrogenpowered transport will have a positive impact on health and will also contribute to avoid particulate matter, NOx, noise, and vibrations compared to diesel engines. A growing set of partners representing the whole value chain -truck manufacturers, transport companies, leading fuel cell suppliers- have already agreed to join the initiative announced earlier this year. The companies represented in the larger HyTrucks initiative in the 3 concerned countries will jointly perform the feasibility study. The initiatives of Air Liquide and DATS 24 have been selected by the Flemish and Dutch government for EU notification as an “important project of common European interest” (IPCEI), and thus obtained eligibility for funding status from European, Federal and Flemish governments. IPCEI allows for enhanced state aid and will help the project as a first of its kind with new technology forward.

Diederick Luijten, Vice President Hydrogen Energy Europe for Air Liquide said: "Fighting climate change is central to the mission of Air Liquide. With our significant hydrogen infrastructure and investments in Belgium, we are ideally positioned to bring solutions to decarbonise transports. We are convinced of the pivotal role that hydrogen will play in the energy transition, especially for heavy-duty applications. Air Liquide is proud to bring its 50 years of expertise in the hydrogen value chain to the HyTrucks project.” Raf Flebus, BU manager of DATS 24, said: “Colruyt Group has produced its own, 100% green hydrogen for almost a decade. Three years ago, we opened the very first all inclusive public hydrogen fuel station in Europe. The upcoming months, four additional public fuel stations will be fitted with a hydrogen installation for cars: Haasrode, Wilrijk, Erpe-Mere & Herve. At the end of 2020, Colruyt Group also put the first 44-tonne hydrogen powered electric truck in Europe into service. So clearly, we believe fuel cell and hydrogen technology is a very promising zero-emission powertrain solution for transports and logistics. This HyTrucks project is yet another significant step towards zero emissions in transport”. Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp, said: “We want to give hydrogen every chance as an energy carrier, a basic element for chemistry and a fuel, and are therefore committing ourselves as an active pioneer in the hydrogen economy. As a world port and Europe’s largest integrated chemical cluster, we are an important link in this chain. Thanks to the collaboration between partners with the right expertise, we have all the assets we need to take further concrete steps in this regard and to set an example for other ports and regions.”

10th MAY 2021 19

New portal by UNCTAD tracks COVID-19’s impact on Global Trade and Development • Global economy is recovering faster than initially expected • A data-rich portal to enhance policymakers’ understanding of pandemic’s wide-ranging impact and suitable recovery policies Cont’d. from Pg. 3

“As countries and the international community design recovery policies to help build resilient and more inclusive and sustainable economies, up-to-date analysis is critical,” UNCTAD Acting Secretary-General Isabelle Durant said. “Mistakes from past crises, such as the 2008 financial crisis, must be avoided.” According to the portal, the global economy is recovering faster than initially expected. It’s projected to grow by close to 5% in 2021, a growth rate not seen in more than a decade. But the recovery is uneven. Developed countries will experience a relatively more important rebound in GDP growth than developing ones, leading to wor ries about further expanding the gap between rich and poor nations.

Vaccine divide risks deepening inequality The growing gap between the number of COVID-19 shots given in developed and developing countries will likely deepen existing socioeconomic inequalities, UNCTAD warns. According to the portal, vaccine doses administered per 100 people varies greatly across countries. Africa is far behind, with only 0.6% of the continent’s population vaccinated, compared with 2.1% in Asia, 12.7% in Europe, 6.7% in South America and 18.8% in North America as of 31 March. The pandemic has already pushed upwards extreme poverty estimates for 2020 and 2021. Estimates indicate that between 119 and 124 million people fell into extreme poverty in 2020, with an additional 143 to 163 million people expected to follow this year. “These estimates are very worrying

because it’s the first significant increase in global extreme poverty in the past two decades,” Ms. Durant said. More than 25 indicators The portal provides an overview of the pandemic’s impact on trade and development, covering more than 25 indicators with a broad selection of data as of 31 March. Much uncertainty remains and the data continues to change, hence UNCTAD urges policymakers to closely monitor the constantly evolving situation. The portal is an update to UNCTAD’s report, “Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trade and development - Transitioning to a new normal,” issued in November last year. It complements previous indicators with new data where relevant and available, notably on the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Indian Steel exports to get boost from slashing of steel export rebate by China BEIJING: China’s withdrawal of export rebates of 13 per cent on 146 steel products and scrapping import duty cut on crude steel, pig iron and scrap augurs well for Indian steel companies. The withdrawal of incentives by India’s eastern neighbour would push up steel prices globally and provide enough room for Indian steel companies to raise prices even as the fall in demand remains a concern. China’s export The Indian steel companies will have to depend on export market. China’s steel exports have been on an upward trend in the current year and grew 24 per cent in March quarter,

partly due to lower base and rise in demand from other countries. The expectations of a cut in export rebates by China to rein in steel production, a move aligned to meet its long-term carbon neutrality targets also pushed up exports, said ICRA. In 2020, when other countries reported a fall in steel output, China’s crude steel production reported a growth of 5.2 per cent. In March quarter, its crude steel production increased 16 per cent due to a lower base. Consumption to grow As per the World Steel Association, China’s steel consumption is expected to grow by 3 per cent this year. It

recorded a demand growth of 15 per cent in March quarter. J a y a n t a R o y, S e n i o r V i c e President, ICRA, said the Chinese Government intends to keep steel capacities under check with stricter production curbs and it may not have excess steel volumes to divert to export markets. As a result, international steel prices are expected to remain buoyant in the near term, which in turn would support India’s steel prices, he said. Indian steel mills would be able to offload large steel volumes to export markets and still remain highly profitable, said ICRA.

Federation of Association of Stevedores seeks relief measures from MoPSW A force majeure clause absolves firms from mee ng their contractual commitments for reasons beyond their control. NEW DELHI: Stevedores engaged in loading and unloading bulk cargo from and onto ships at the Centre-run Major Ports have called for relief measures including declaration of force majeure and rate stability as the second wave of the coronavirus rips through the country, posing operational challenges in clearing cargo. A force majeure clause absolves firms from meeting their contractual commitments for reasons beyond their control. Stating that the current situation was “more severe and extra ordinary than that seen in 2020,” the Fe d e r a t i o n o f A s s o c i a t i o n o f Stevedores has urged the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to direct the Port Trusts to declare force majeure at their ports to help stevedores avoid penalties from failure to adhere to contractual obligations. The Federation, in a letter to the Ministry, has also sought complete moratorium on tariff increases at major ports for two years, including

those based on indexation and roll back of tariff increases in the last 12 months. It has also called for “reversal of detrimental policies” such as the berthing policy for dry bulk cargo at Major Ports, certain provisions of the stevedoring and shore handling policy and amendments to the land policy which currently makes leasing land in Major Ports prohibitive. In April 2020, the Ministry had instructed Major Port trusts to ensure that no penal charges, demurrage, detention charges, dwell time charges, anchorage charges, penal berth hire charges, performance related penalties etc are levied on any port users (traders, importers, exporters, shipping lines, concessionaires, licences, CFS etc) for any delay in docking/undocking, loading/unloading operations or evacuation/arrival of cargo/repair of vessel during the lockdown period plus 30 days recovery period. “It is a different matter that each of the ports have implemented this order differently, with some ports still

refusing to abide. While one of our members approached the court for implementation of the Ministry order, many of our members have represented their cases to the respective port Chairmen,” Ishwar Achanta, President of the Federation wrote in a 5 May letter to Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (I/C), Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. While the lockdown rules have exempted ports and supply chain activities, Achanta said that the “ground reality was different”. “Across port cities, our workers continue to be harassed, especially when a night curfew is in effect. We are also seeing an exodus of migrant l a b o u r, l e a d i n g t o l a b o u r unavailability, due to which we are finding it difficult to meet the contractual obligations with the export-import clients. Extending relief to the stevedores who are engaged in providing essential services will ensure that the activities at major ports remain operational during the pandemic,” he added.

India’s 2021-22 Wheat exports seen 26% lower : S&P Global Platts NEW DELHI: The US Department of Agriculture’s India attaché sees the country’s wheat exports reaching 2 million mt in the 2021-22 trade year, 26% lower on the year, as output is also forecast to decline. The trade year begins in July for all countries. India’s wheat production will be 105 million mt in the 2021-22 marketing year, the New

Delhi attache said, down from 107.86 million mt a year earlier, according to the report published on the USDA website on May 4. India’s wheat marketing year runs from April through March. “Field reports indicate that production gains in the northern states will only partially offset the expected lower yields in central and eastern India compared to last year’s

record yield,” the attache said. Domestic prices of the food grain have remained firm, despite the likely fall in exports, due to strong government purchases under the minimum support price system, it said. Indian traders are in talks to make export deals with counterparts in Bangladesh and Myanmar for the current marketing year, trade sources said.

BIMCO, ICS, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO launch New Fuel Oil Survey OSLO: The International Maritime Organisation’s 2020 global sulphur limit for marine fuel oil has been in force for more than a year. BIMCO, The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO are calling on Fleet M a n a g e r s , Ve s s e l M a n a g e r s , Technical Superintendents, Masters and Chief Engineers to share their insight and experiences with marine fuels in a new sur vey aimed at identifying potential quality and quantity issues. Following on from the industry survey conducted in the first quarter

of 2020 that showed the switch to lowsulphur fuel has not been without problems, the four organisations are launching a new survey, this time with the aim to get an even greater understanding of issues encountered by the industry, particularly issues related to the bunkering and use of marine fuel oil. This Survey will run for a year until 1 May 2022 and the information gathered will help identify specific areas in the fuel supply and management chain that need improvement. The survey comprises of two different sections, that can be submitted separately: • Section 1 contains questions

related to fuel oil quality and are aimed only at ships using compliant fuel oil i.e., VLSFO and ULSFO. • Section 2 contains questions related to fuel oil quantity and are for ships using both compliant fuel oil and HSFO with a sulphur content exceeding 0.50% m/m in combination with scrubbers. Answers and any related evidence are invited from ships operating worldwide in our bid to get a detailed understanding of all fuel related issues encountered by the industry. Information gained from the survey will help in improving quality, quantity, and safety standards of marine fuel oil through related work at the IMO and other fora.

Finance Ministry’s report says impact of COVID-19 second wave on economy to remain muted NEW DELHI: The impact of the second wave of the coronavir us pandemic on the economy is likely to remain muted as compared to the first wave, the finance ministry said in its monthly economic report. Admitting that the second wave of the pandemic has posed a downside risk to economic activity in the first quarter of FY2021-22, the report said

“there are reasons to expect a muted economic impact as compared to the first wave. Learning to ‘operate with COVID-19’, as borne by international experience, provides a silver lining of economic resilience amidst the second wave”. The fiscal position of the central government, it said, has witnessed an improvement in the recent months with

a revival in the economic activities during the second half of FY2020-21. As per provisional figures, net direct tax collections for 2020-21 are 4.5 per cent higher than Revised Estimates (RE) and 5 per cent higher than collections in 2019-20 — the significant growth compared to 2019-20 provides an indication of economic recovery since the first wave.

India’s sovereign rating to remain at current level for next 2 years: S&P S ll forecas ng GDP growth at 11 per cent for the current fiscal NEW YORK: S&P Global Ratings on Friday said India’s credit rating would be retained at the current level for the next two years, and the country will see a slightly faster pace of growth in the next couple of years that will support its sovereign rating. T h e U S - b a s e d r a t i n g a g e n c y, however, said that the second wave of COVID may derail a strong recovery in the Indian economy, but its economic impact would be less than that of last year. Indian economy contracted 8 per cent in the fiscal ended March 2021. S&P had in March projected the

Indian economy growing by 11 per cent in the current fiscal ending March 2022. In its report earlier, S&P said with the rising COVID infection, it saw GDP growth rate dropping to 9.8 per cent under the ‘moderate’ scenario, where it estimates infections to peak in May. Growth could fall to as low as 8.2 per cent in a ‘severe’ scenario in which cases would likely peak only in late June, as per S&P. Speaking at a webinar on ‘What A Drawn Out Second COVID Wave Means For India’, S&P Global Ratings Director – Sovereign and Public Finance Ratings – Andrew Wood said in the ‘moderate’

downside scenario there would not be any major impact on the government’s fiscal position. There could be upside pressure on general government fiscal deficit forecast of 11 per cent as revenue generation would be weaker, but debt stock will remain roughly stable just above 90 per cent of GDP, Wood added. “We are still forecasting GDP growth at 11 per cent for the current fiscal. It is a baseline scenario with some downside risk. But if we do see the number creeping lower, most likely it will not go too far in our current downside scenario.

Supply Chains Firms Urged To Protect Seafarers’ Rights : IMO New due diligence tool aims to help businesses uphold their responsibility to protect human rights at sea.

LONDON: A wide-ranging set of guidance has been issued to help enterprises using shipping services to protect the human rights of seafarers, as hundred of thousands are still stranded on ships due to COVID-19 imposed travel restrictions. The Human Rights Due Diligence Tool is a joint initiative of the UN Global Compact (UNGC), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN Human Rights), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The Due Diligence Tool for cargo owners and charterers has been issued amid concerns that the number of crew stranded at sea by COVID -19 restrictions could surge from the current level of 200,000, potentially retur ning to the peak of 400,000 seafarers at the height of the crew change crisis in September 2020. UN agencies hope the new guidance will help ensure that the working conditions and human rights of seafarers are respected and comply with international standards. The new guidance aims to ensure that seafarers have their rights safeguarded in areas such as physical and mental health, access to family life and freedom of movement. Whilst

recognizing the importance of the maritime industry in transporting more than 80% of global trade goods, UN agencies have expressed concer n at reports of seafarers working beyond the 11-month maximum period of service on board set out by the ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). The UN agencies have also expressed strong concern at reports that companies engaged in international trade are avoiding chartering vessels where a crew change is due, with some demanding “no crew change” clauses in charter party agreements, preventing needed crew changeovers and adding further pressure on the maritime industry. Under the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), companies engaged with the maritime industry have a distinct responsibility to respect the human rights of seafarers as workers along their value chain. Welcoming the new tool, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim said: “Seafarers are at the heart of the global supply chain. They are also at the mercy of COVID-19 restrictions on travel and transit. This has led to hundreds of thousands of seafarers being denied repatriation, crew changes, shore leave

and ultimately being forced to stay working on ships long beyond their contracts. It is incumbent on everyone involved with shipping, across the entire supply and logistics chain, to ensure seafarers rights are protected. This tool is an important step forward, providing a practical approach for cargo owners, charterers and logistic providers to consider the human rights of seafarers and ensure they are put first and foremost as they work to deliver the goods that people need and want.”

Effective mid-May 2021, Bijagos Shuttle service fully operated by CMA CGM deploys two vessels of 1,700 TEU Bissau port is served on fortnightly frequency during the cashew season from mid-May to August 2021.

Lifting the curtain on the reverberations of the Suez blockage : Maersk Insight COPENHAGEN: On Tuesday March 23, a 400-meter-long container vessel ran aground and became lodged sideways across the waterway in the Suez Canal. Almost a week in and with a staggering cost of $9 billion a day in lost commerce, everyone took a collective sigh of relief when the vessel was refloated. However, the relief was short-lived and soon after, shipping lines started to warn about ripple effects. So what does this entail? If one vessel is one week delayed and one is on time – they will be sailing in parallel on the same service – causing the ripple effects to start. Affecting near 50 Maersk vessels, the impact is significant. • They will arrive to the terminal at the same time, which creates congestion at the terminal berth. • Trying to discharge the vessels simultaneously will trigger yard congestions. • Gaiting the containers out of the terminal on truck or by train creates a bottleneck that continues throughout the logistics chain – in the warehouses, the distribution centres – the list continues. It also impacts the available capacity to move cargo. To recover approximately a week’s delay, vessels must either call fewer ports, consolidate port calls, turn back before end rotations OR slide the entire service – meaning that all the coming vessels will be delayed. In both these scenarios, the capacity is lost in totality or capacity is lost in certain markets – either way it impacts customers. Catching-up a 5-10-hour delay requires hard work from dedicated teams, catching up almost a full week’s delay with upstream and downstream impact requires intense commitment from a full organisation for weeks, possibly months. Another ripple effect, but equally significant is the repositioning of empty containers. Factoring in all the vessels that were late from Europe into Asia with dry containers and all the vessels that were delayed from the Middle-East into Latin America with empty reefers, it equals a significant drop in availability - at a time where empty stocks are already severely impacted due to the demand pressures of 2020. What is Maersk doing to mitigate the impact? The first and most immediate part is working together with our customers to proactively plan the handling of delayed cargo, prioritising the most urgent/critical goods to be shipped first. The second part is how we manage our short-term booking acceptance. The integrity of our products and customer promise is paramount to serving all our customers and we must ensure that what we sell, we can deliver. The new normal is still being determined, and while we are deploying all our current capacity, we expect the situation to remain tight into the third quarter and we will need to carefully manage our intake for weeks still to come. Given the extraordinary market conditions triggered by both the global pandemic as well as the vessel blockage at the Suez Canal, we are accelerating the injection of new dry containers into our fleet. By the end of the second quarter we will have added around 260.000 TEUs. This comes after the 400.000 TEUs already added to our fleet from July 2020 to January 2021.

In addition to these larger plays, continuous efforts are ongoing in all part of the organisation to adjust and mitigate where we can to ensure reliability in our operations. Our aim is that come start of Q3, we’ll be in much better shape to once again cater to all the needs of our customers. What can I as a shipper do to be better prepared for future disruptions? While disruptions are not welcomed, they do happen. To be as prepared as possible, simulate your supply chain needs and focus on the elements that are critical. Building that mid-term plan and identifying possible issues early on will allow you to plot out your supply chain and will make it easier to react quicker and make decision based on data versus time. Business leaders can further prepare for disruptions by building resilience in their supply chains and end-to end visibility. Supply chains are global and vulnerable, and the tactical element is to establish resilience in e.g.: • How products are sourced and that critical components are dual sourced • Regularly testing and building alternative means of transportation • Different stock holding options The key is that the resilience is scalable and agile – to be switched on and off as needed, not only from a supplier perspective, but on a company level. The strategical element is to build end-to-end visibility and being able to connect supply with demand. If this does not flow in synergy, timely and right decision cannot be made when disruptions happen. Partnership is key Integrated logistics holds some of the most untapped potential to business growth in this decade. Working with partners that can provide detailed supply chain insights can permanently transform supply chain management into a competitive advantage. Partnering with Maersk provides a fast track to that potential by gaining control and getting access to an unmatched combination of physical assets, new digital platforms and unique competencies. As an example, Maersk is building robust supply chains for customers such as Novo Nordisk and H&M, who demand integrated and sustainable solutions that ensure a timely delivery of essential medicine and clothing to patients and consumers globally.

Mundra Port in the state of Gujarat handled 5.66m TEUs, placing it almost 1m TEUs ahead of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which has long been established as the premier container hub in the country. Karan Adani, CEO and Whole Time Director of APSEZ, said: “Mundra Port

In its logistics business, the company has diversified its railway rolling stock, enabling it to serve bulk customers from

mines as well as ports. It acquired Sarguja Rail (SRCPL) and restructured other railway tracks within APSEZ, creating India’s first private sector railway track asset company with a steady stream of annuity income. Additionally, Adani L ogistics is looking to add 30m sq ft of warehousing capacity over the next five years, capitalising on the e-commerce trend which has heightened demand for large format Grade A warehouses. Adani added: “We are truly in the right direction to take APSEZ from a port company to a transport utility company delivering full logistics solution to our customers.”
