FFFAI signs MoU with NITIE “To train people for logistics, employment should be prime focus”, says Former Special Secretary, Logistics Cont’d. from Pg. 2 ... a prestigious training institute and the premier Centre of Excellence in Logistics in India, having a world class campus, located in the heart of Mumbai city. This collaboration between FFFAI and NITIE will open many opportunities for upgrading skill sets of prospective candidates who want to pursue professional training in the field of Logistics and Supply Chain sector. This landmark event (signing of the MoU) was conducted through the E-mode during 6th EC Meeting of FFFAI held at Bengaluru on 28th May 2022 which is attended by 28 member Associations in India lead by Mr Shankar Shinde, Chairman, FFFAI. Also present on this occasion were Mr N Sivasailam, former Special Secretar y (Logistics), Ministr y of Commerce, Government of India and Mr Bani Bhattacharjee, IRS. The signing programme was attended by EC members and members of BCHAAL as well.
Mr Shankar Shinde and Dr Nirav Thakkar along with Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari and officials from NITIE during the visit to the ins tute
In his inaugural comments Mr Shinde highlighted the far-reaching effects of this MoU pertaining to the collaboration between FFFAI and NITIE for skilling people for logistics industry. He commended the high-quality infrastructure and training facilities being offered by NITIE t o n e w a s p i r a n t s f o r t h e l o g i s t i c s i n d u s t r y. “We have witnessed the excellent infrastructure and facilities available for training while we visited the Institute campus. With renowned logistics industry professional Mr Shashi Kiran Shetty at its helm as the Chairman, we are confident this Institute would add more value to the collaboration between FFFAI and NITIE and thereby to the entire logistics industry,” Mr Shinde added. He stated that the purpose of the MoU is to share knowledge, to collaborate, doing researches to map the actual requirements, to procure trained persons and to fill up the gap between the demand and supply of trained manpower to the logistics industry. The FFFAI Chairman also pondered on various government projects assigned to FFFAI which may further be accomplished jointly by FFFAI and NITIE for the greater interest of the country. Mr Shinde was confident that FFFAI with its IIFF initiatives and regular engagement with successful execution of FIATA Logistics Diploma course in IIFF lead by Mr Tej Contractor, President and Dr. Nirav Thakkar Hon Secretary would benefit and take this initiatives to a different height. In her remarks on the MoU Professor Dr Hema Date, Coordinator Centre of Excellence in Logistics & SCM and others, NITIE expressed high optimism in catering to the demand side of the logistics industry as far as supply of trained manpower is concerned, due to the joint initiatives with FFFAI. Speaking on this occasion, Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Director, NITIE endorsed the observations made by Mr Shinde emphasising on collaborative activities in different areas for strengthening the logistics industry from

academic point of view. He assured full cooperation to FFFAI in this regard. Addressing the Office Bearers, EC Members of FFFAI and the officials of NITIE to congratulate them for a great initiative by signing the MoU, Mr Sivasailam emphatically viewed that training and post-training employment should go hand in hand. According to Mr Sivasailam, industry should identify their requirements and provide trainees to get trained and placed back to their respective organisations. “A training institution’s performance should be judged by the number of employments they are able to create, as I experienced during my tenure in the Telecom sector. The purpose of training is fulfilled when the employment is guaranteed. Potential persons (trainees) have to be provided by business houses as per their business requirements and the training institutions should send back those trainees with required training to the business houses, rather than training institute only supply the trained manpower. I am pretty certain that this team of FFFAI and NITIE will carry forward the joint initiatives as per the MoU prepared through mutual discussions to the desired goal,” he said.
Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Director and other officials of NITIE during the signing of the MoU
He stressed upon the fact that FFFAI is the only logistics organisation with penetration in the Tier III cities through its 28 member associations across the country. Accordingly, the training programmes would reach out even to the Tier III cities of the country, which in fact, is the objective of the Government’s flagship initiative of “PM Gatishakti” Responding to Mr Sivasailam Prof. Twari shared that the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has already identified NITIE as a logistics training hub to implement the PM Gatishakti programmes in this regard. Proposing the vote of thanks, Mr Dushyant Mulani, Chairman Elect, FFFAI thanked the team NITIE for coming forward to sign the most significant MoU with FFFAI, which is the largest logistics association in the country. “Skill development/training remains one of the core activities of FFFAI through its training arm IIFF. The MoU would further strengthen FFFAI’s ongoing endeavour in this regard,” he concluded.

RBI hikes repo rate by 50 Basis Points as inationary pressures intensify; retains GDP forecast of 7.2% MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor announced that the Monetar y Policy Committee voted unanimously to hike the benchmark interest rate by 50 bps with immediate effect. The RBI also left its FY23 GDP
growth forecast unchanged at 7.2%. The policy repo rate now stands at 4.90%, still below its pre-pandemic level. Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rates have been raised by 50 bps. SDF rate stands adjusted
to 4.65%, MSF rate adjusted to 5.15%. On the inflation front, the RBI revised its projection to 6.7% from the earlier estimate of 5.7% as the protracted nature of the Russia-Ukraine war puts pressure on commodity prices globally.
Rate hike to check inflation, support growth; but flow and cost of credit to MSMEs especially exporters to be looked into: FIEO NEW DELHI: Responding to the RBI’s decision of increasing the repo rate by 50 basis points to 4.9 percent at a time, when the global economies including India is reeling under inflationary pressures, Dr A Sakthivel, President, FIEO said that this was expected looking at the current and evolving macroeconomic situation. Dr Sakthivel welcomed the initiative taken by the Central Bank of the country, as it will not only help in containing inflation but will also support the economic growth process including exports. However, at the same time RBI should ensure that it neither
affects the credit flow nor the interest burden on MSMEs especially exporters and if required, the Interest Equalisation Scheme may enhance the support to insulate against any rate hike. With agencies like IMF, World Bank and WTO already scaling down their global output growth and world trade forecast coupled with disr uptions, shortages and escalating prices due to geopolitical tensions and sanctions, steps taken to contain excess liquidity from the system thereby reducing commodity and raw material/input prices, will help the trade and industry in containing their
overall cost of production, added FIEO President. FIEO Chief reiterated that as the Indian economy appears capable of sustaining such geopolitical conditions, the decision of hike in repo rate along with the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) to 4.65 percent, the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) and the Bank Rate to 5.15 percent, will further help in reducing pressure on demand front. This will help in ensuring adequate liquidity in the system to meet the productive requirements of the economy in support of credit offtake growth.

Container Transhipment facility & Waterway connectivity going to be game changer for Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port : Sanjeev Ranjan Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port asked to prepare report on Nicobar hub NEW DELHI: The Shipping Ministr y has entr usted Syama P r a s a d Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata, w i t h t h e responsibility to prepare a detailed project report for a transhipment hub in Great Nicobar, raising hope that the new facility may be a great leap forward for the century-old port. SMP has appointed AECOM to carry out the study, which is expected to file its findings by the end of this year. The DPR will establish the viability of the project. Sources said the city-based port might be entrusted with the development and management of the Nicobar facility in the future. If this indeed happens, Great Nicobar may be the third port system of SMP after Haldia and Kolkata.
The Inter national Container Transhipment Terminal at Great Nicobar is part of the Modi Government’s plan to bring down India’s dependence on overseas ports for International Trade. Major Container Shipping Lines do not make enough direct calls to Indian Ports that depend on feeder vessels to reach Singapore or Colombo transhipment hubs for sending cargo. The circuitous route adds to time and cost to Indian industry and makes them relatively uncompetitive in the export market. Due to its geographic location and poor navigability of the riverine port, SMP does not get any direct call, compared to Visakhapatnam and Chennai which are connected by some Shipping Lines. Consequently, the new port would be of utmost importance to SMP. “Container Transhipment facility at Galathea Bay and regional
waterway connectivity is going to be a game changer for future of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port,” Sanjeev Ranjan, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said. SMP Chairman Vinit Kumar said the port would bring down the cost of operation for users. “Now we depend on foreign ports. Once it is within the Country, our requirements can be prioritised,” he said.
DGFT allows 1 MT Sugar export quota, asks to complete Shipment in 90 days NEW DELHI: Unlike wheat exports in which each letter of credit (LC) is verified, the Government adopted a different yardstick on sugar and distributed a 1 million tonne (mt) export release order quota on a prorata basis among those who had applied for the permits. A total of 62 exporters and sugar mills had submitted 326 applications (separately for different quantities) on the National Single Window System seeking permits worth 2.3 mt. After perusing these applications, the Food Ministry has approved 1 mt and asked them to export within 90 days. The allottees of export release order (RO) quota will have to submit a progress report to the Directorate of Sugar weekly. “It would have been better of the Government following earlier practice
allotted the 1 mt quota to sugar mills as they would have benefitted by selling the sugar to exporters,” said a mill owner. However, official sources said that since the export window is too short and quantity is not big enough, the Government went with those seeking the permits. The allocation to an exporter, for instance, has been made out of a 1 mt total quota as per its percentage share in the request quantity of 2.31 mt. While Mills need to dispatch sugar within 30 days of issuance of RO, exporters need to comply with shipments within 90 days, the Ministry earlier said. The Government on May 24 announced that sugar (raw, refined and white sugar) exports from June 1 would be allowed only through permits and fixed a maximum quantity of 10 mt for this season (October-September).
The order issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) will be valid until October 31. However, sugar being exported to the EU and the US under CXL and tariff rate quota (TRQ) are exempt from the current restriction. A day after the decision, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey had said that, unlike wheat where shipments were prohibited, the step in sugar was to monitor the movement of the sweetener out of the country so that there was no problem with domestic availability. In sugar season 2021-22, about 8.2 mt of the sweetener has been dispatched from sugar mills for export, out of which, a record 7.8 mt have been already shipped, out of the contracted 9 mt. The Gover nment expects no problem of availability in domestic market as another 2.8 mt can go out of the Country.
India’s Trade with Russia grew 45%, imports by 58% between 2020-21 and 2021-22 NEW DELHI: Though the Commerce Ministry has said that the impact of Russia-Ukraine war on India’s trade with both the warring nations can be assessed only after the situation stabilises, it is interesting to know between 2020-21 and April-February period of 2021-22, India’s value of trade with Russia grew 45.79 per cent. Similarly India’s value of trade with Ukraine between the same period, went up by 19.34 per cent.
According to Commerce Ministry figures, India’s total trade with Russia stood at $8.141 billion in 2020-21. During April-February period of 2021-22, the trade value went up by 45.79 per cent to $11.869 billion. Similarly, India’s trade with Ukraine in value terms, stood at $2.590 billion during 2020-21. In the April-February period of 2021-22, this went up by 19.34 per cent to $3.091 billion. More significantly India’s imports
from Russia rose to $8.69 billion in the first 11 months of 2021-22, 58 per cent higher than the total imports of $5.48 billion recorded in 2020-21. India’s exports to Russia rose to $3.18 billion in April–February period of 2021-22 from $2.65 billion recorded in the full year 2020-21. T h e Ru s s i a - U k r a i n e w a r h a s continued for more than 100 days and severely impacted India’s trade ties with both the nations.

The Minister also had a discussion with stakeholders of the Rubber Sector at MPEDA. He assured the Government’s support for the further development of the sector and exhorted all stakeholders to work towards making India self-sufficient in rubber.
India’s Trade with GCC nations increasing at significantly rapid pace NEW DELHI: India’s trade with Gulf nations has come into prominence recently. India imports predominately crude oil and natural gas from the Gulf nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and exports pearls, precious and semiprecious stones; metals; imitation jewellery; electrical machinery; iron and steel; and chemicals to these countries. During 2020-21, India imported goods worth $110.73 billion from the six GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) nations. Its merchandise exports stood at $44 billion to these nations. Besides trade, Gulf nations are host to a sizeable Indian population. Out of about 32 million non-resident Indians (NRIs), nearly half are estimated to be working in Gulf countries. These NRIs send a significant amount of money back home.
According to a November 2021 report of the World Bank, India got $87 billion in foreign remittances in 2021. Of this, a sizeable portion came from the GCC nations. Trade with GCC nations: • Saudi Arabia: It was the fourthlargest trading partner last fiscal. To t a l b i l a t e r a l t r a d e h a s increased to about $43 billion in 2021-22 from $22 billion in the previous fiscal. • Qatar: India imports 8.5 million tonnes a year of LNG from Qatar and exports products ranging from cereals to meat, fish, chemicals, and p l a s t i c s . Tw o - w a y c o m m e r c e between India and Qatar rose to $15 billion in 2021-22 from $9.21 billion in 2020-21. • Kuwait: It was the 27th largest trading partner of India in the last
fiscal. Bilateral trade has jumped to $12.3 billion in 2021-22 as compared to $6.3 billion in the previous financial year. • UAE: It was the third-largest trading partner of India in 2021-22. India’s bilateral trade with the nation increased to $72.9 billion in 2021-22 as compared to $43.3 billion in 2020 21. • Oman: It was the 31st largest trading partner of India in 2021-22. India’s bilateral trade with the nation has increased to about $10 billion in 2021-22 as compared to $5.5 billion in 2020-21. • Bahrain: Two-way commerce with India stood at $1.65 billion in 2021-22 as against $1 billion in 2020-21. Besides, India’s bilateral trade with Iran aggregated to $1.9 billion in 2021-22 as compared to $ 2.1 billion in 2020-21.
Centre planning to import CNG in place of LNG to meet domestic demand NEW DELHI: India is considering importing compressed natural gas (CNG) in place of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet the incremental domestic demand at a lower cost at a time high prices have cut local LNG consumption, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. The oil ministry has asked GAIL and Petronet LNG to explore supply sources and shippers for importing CNG, they said. CNG is natural gas compressed under high pressure while LNG is gas
supercooled to liquid, both conversions undertaken to reduce the volume of gas for transport. CNG, however, has 2.4 times less energy density per unit of volume than LNG and therefore is uneconomical to transport from far-off places, such as from the US to India. But the economics is favourable if the exporter is located within 1,500 nautical miles, a range that would cover gasproducing countries in the Gulf region, the person said. CNG has a lower cost of production
and storage compared to LNG, which requires sophisticated cooling plants and cryogenic tanks. CNG can be directly injected from the ship into the pipeline for use, but LNG must be regasified at import terminals before a transfer to pipelines. The combined cost of liquefaction and regasification is about $4 per mmBtu, something CNG importers can save, the people cited above said. The current cost of LNG in the Asian spot market is about $22 per mmBtu.

25.275 km that was achieved in Doha, Qatar in Feb 2019. The task took 10 days to complete. The Minister said the Amrawati to Akola section is part of NH 53,this is an important Industrial corridor which connects major cities like Kolkata, Raipur, Nagpur and Surat. He said once completed, this stretch will play a major role in easing movement of traffic and freight on this route. Shri Gadkari congratulated all the engineers, contractors, consultants, workers from NHAI and Raj Path Infracon Pvt. Ltd. for efficient implementation of the project that has helped in successful completion of this world record.
Global growth expected to grow at 2.9 % in 2022 : World Bank Stagfla on risk rises amid sharp slowdown in Global growth WASHINGTON: Compounding the damage from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has magnified the slowdown in the global economy, which is entering what could become a protracted period of feeble growth and elevated inflation, according to the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report. This raises the risk of stagflation, with potentially harmful consequences for middle- and low-income economies alike. Global growth is expected to slump from 5.7 percent in 2021 to 2.9 percent in 2022— significantly lower than 4.1 percent that was anticipated in January. It is expected to hover around that pace over 2023-24, as the war in Ukraine disrupts activity, investment, and trade in the near term, pent-up demand fades, and fiscal and monetary policy accommodation is withdrawn. As a result of the damage from the pandemic and the war, the level of per capita income in developing economies this year will be nearly 5 percent below its pre-pandemic trend.
“The war in Ukraine, lockdowns in China, supply-chain disruptions, and the risk of stagflation are hammering growth. For many countries, recession will be hard to avoid,” said World Bank President David Malpass. “Markets look forward, so it is urgent to encourage production and avoid trade restrictions. Changes in fiscal, monetary, climate and debt policy are needed to counter capital misallocation and inequality.” “Developing economies will have to balance the need to ensure fiscal sustainability with the need to mitigate the effects of today’s overlapping crises on their poorest citizens,” said Ayhan Kose, Director of the World Bank’s Prospects Group. “Communicating monetary policy decisions clearly, leveraging credible monetary policy frameworks, and protecting central bank independence can effectively anchor inflation expectations and reduce the amount of policy tightening required to achieve the desired effects on inflation and activity.” Growth in advanced economies is projected to sharply decelerate from
5.1 percent in 2021 to 2.6 percent in 2022—1.2 percentage point below projections in January. Growth is expected to further moderate to 2.2 percent in 2023, largely reflecting the further unwinding of the fiscal and monetary policy support provided during the pandemic. Among emerging market and developing economies, growth is also projected to fall from 6.6 percent in 2021 to 3.4 percent in 2022—well below the annual average of 4.8 percent over 20112019. The negative spillovers from the war will more than offset any near-term boost to some commodity exporters from higher energy prices. Forecasts for 2022 growth have been revised down in nearly 70 percent of EMDEs, including most commodity importing countries as well as four-fifths of lowincome countries. The World Bank slashed its India economic growth forecast for FY23 from the earlier estimate of 8% in April to 7.5% because of surging inflation, supply chain disr uptions, and sustained geopolitical tensions.
India may clears 500,000 MT of Wheat exports after ban : Sources NEW DELHI: The Indian Government is likely to allow exports of nearly 500,000 million tonnes (mt) of wheat in the near term after it banned shipments on May 13, sources in the Commerce Ministry confirmed recently. The officials also said that this will be the second tranche of exports allowed since the ban was imposed. Recently, India cleared 469,000 mt of wheat exports, mainly to Bangladesh, the Philippines, Tanzania and Malaysia, they added. The May 13 ban cut India’s exports to 1.13 million mt in May, down 23% on month, against a record 1.46 million mt in April, an official with the Food Ministry said. “The Government is allowing exports that were stuck within
the Country despite having proper documentation and letters of credit issued before the restrictions came in,” the Food Ministry official added. There is still around 1.7 million mt of wheat stuck at several ports, including Mundra and Deendayal, as exporters moved large volumes of wheat amid robust export demand and the likelihood of comfortable domestic supplies, dealers with two global export firms said. India, the world’s secondlargest wheat producer, emerged as a key wheat supplier in the backdrop of global supply tightness after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Government had earlier been optimistic about facilitating record wheat exports in marketing year 2022-23
(April-March), after India shipped out 7.85 million mt in MY 2021-22. However, a severe heat wave across key wheat-producing Northern States led to spike in domestic prices and prompted the Government to ban exports to check rising prices and ensure food security. While banning the exports, the Government had allowed exemptions to shipments that had letters of credit issued before May 13 or through Government interventions to ensure food security in other countries. Despite the decline in output and the restrictions on exports, Indian traders expect the authorities to allow up to 7.5 million mt of wheat exports in MY 2022-23.
