India’s Exports likely to touch $900 billion in FY24

NEW DELHI: India’s exports of goods and services could touch $900 billioninthecurrentfinancialyear,up from $770 billion in the previous year, keeping resilient despite global headwinds, a top official of a grouping ofexporterssaid.

Merchandise exports could expand to between $495 billion and $500 billion, while services exports could touch $400 billion in the year ending March 2024, said Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). Overseas demand remains strong in manymarkets, headded.

Trade Minister Shri Piyush Goyal urged exporters to explore new markets, however, in view of the possible impact of war in Ukraine and aglobalslowdown.

“The times ahead are going to be

very, very tough,” Goyal said speaking at a industry event late on Wednesday, while warning of the falloutfromtheconflict.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s government has set an export target of $2 trillion by 2030, offering benefits to boost exports of electronics, engineering, pharmaceutical, andothergoods.

India’s exports have increased by more than $200 billion in the last two years, led by a surge in exports of software, mobile exports, and agriculturalandpetroleumproducts.

Exportsofengineering, gems, and jewellery goods have slowed in the lastfewmonths, however.

Exports of agricultural, petroleum, and electronic goods remained strong in the Western markets due to pricing factors while exports to Asian and

Middle east countries have grown substantially, exporterssaid.

Sahai, who was part of a 50-member business delegation to Russiarecently, saidtherewasahuge demandforIndiangoods, particularly food, after the Western sanctions imposedovertheUkrainewar.

“Indian exporters are hopeful that both countries would soon work out a mechanism allowing payments in local currencies that would facilitate the shipments of Indian goods to Russia,”Sahaisaid.

But Indian officials have said Russia was reluctant to accept payments in the rupee currency for itsoilexports.

India has not explicitly condemned Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and has called for dialoguetoresolvehostilities.

Customs system glitch chokes shipments at ports

Pan India, traders pay heavy demurrage charges

NEW DELHI: Several shipments havebeenstuckatIndianportsdueto glitches in the customs IT system, leading to importers paying heavy demurrage charges. According to trade reports, shipments worth Rs3,000-5,000crorearestuckpanIndia.

Importers have alleged that the dutypaymentoptionontheICEGATE system is still not functioning properly. Since April 1, heavy demurrage charges have been paid by trade/importers, to the tune of aroundRs500-700crore.

The Customs Department had launched a new updated IT system on April 1 for payment of duty by importers, including an electronic cash ledger payment system aimed at ensuring ease of doing business.

However, importers claim that they are still facing issues in making payments through the ICEGATE system. In response to the situation, customs authorities have started manual clearance of goods to facilitatetrade.

Customs officials are holding panIndia interactions with trade to address concerns and issues related totheITsystemglitches.

The Government has been focusing on easing regulatory processes and improving trade facilitation to boost the country’s economy.

However, the current situation withthecustomsITsystemislikelyto have a negative impact on trade, as importers continue to face difficulties inclearingtheirshipments.

Major Ports see cargo traffic rise by 1.30% in April

NEW DELHI: India’s Major Ports saw a bare 1.30 per cent-odd rise in cargo traffic in April to 65.87 million tonnes (mt), driven primarily by an increase in coal – both coking and thermal (imports) and finished fertiliser shipments. However, traffic across three of the busiest ports –Paradip (Odisha), Deendayal (Gujarat), and JNPT (Maharashtra) –slowed down on account of lower iron ore shipments (a key export item from India), indicating building recessionarypressures.

Cargo traffic in April 2022 was 65 mt, as per data available from the IndianPortsAssociation.

Paradip, Deendayal, and JNPA handled 45 per cent of the Country’s cargo traffic, slightly lower than the 47 per cent share they had in the comparativemonthlastyear.

Finished fertiliser shipments saw the highest increase in April, rising over 33 per cent, to 0.6 mt; as against 0.46mtintheyear-ago-period.

Thermal coal shipments, primarily imports increased by 27 per cent YoY to 12 mt-odd, versus 9.4 mt in April 2022. Coking coal – a key steel-making raw material – saw an 11-12 per cent riseto4.6mt.Cokingcoalshipmentsin Aprillastyearwas4.1mt.

Other liquid shipments saw a 6.68percentincreaseYoYto2.4mt.

Incidentally, other categories like petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL), which includes crude, LPG/LNG and others, saw a drop of 2 per cent YoY to 19.6 mt, down from the 20 mt-odd shipmentsinApril2022.

Iron ore shipments, primarily exported to China, dropped 13 per cent-odd, the highest fall among major commodities tracked, to 4.7 mt. Shipments in the year-ago-period was 5.4mt.

Raw fertiliser shipments dropped over 9 per cent to 0.71 mt in April (from 0.8 mt in the year-ago period), while miscellaneous items shipped droppedover23percentto6.6mt.

Container traffic saw a 4 per cent increase with 981 TEUs (twenty equivalent units) moving, against 943 TEUsinthesamemonth,a-year-ago.

Port-wise traffic

Paradip – among the busiest ports in India – witnessed the highest traffic to the tune of 11.7 mt, but this was still 4 per cent-odd lower than April last year. The drop was primarily due to lower shipments of POL – of 6 per cent to 3.1 mt – and iron ore – down 25percentto1.8mt.

Vizag saw a 2.35 per cent drop in traffic to 6.2 mt mostly because of 16percentdropinPOLshipments.

Mormugao saw a 16.30 per cent decline in traffic with shipments across all categories, except thermal coal, declining; while in the case of Deendayal port, where traffic dropped 11 per cent in April, shipments were down in most categories except coal andfinishedfertilisers.

The Kolkata dock system saw a 5percentdropintraffic.

Krishnapatnam Port and Tuna Port monthly volumes at an all-me high

Domesc container cargo volumes jumped 13.6% YoY

... implying a Y-o-Y growth of 12.8%. This growth in cargo volumes is supported by dry cargo volumes increase of 9% (iron ore 64%, noncokingcoal22%,andcoastalcoal67%) and container volume increase of 13.6%.

“Growth in cargo volumes across most of our ports reflects that our strategy of improving operational efficiency is delivering results and this willcontinuetoboosttheROCEofport assets” said Mr. Karan Adani, CEO and Whole Time Director, APSEZ. “I am also pleased to announce that DhamraLNGTerminalbertheditsfirst shipandthenaturalgasstartedflowing inthepipelinenetworkconnectedtothe terminal, well in line with our guidance of achieving the LNG terminal commissioningduringQ1FY24.”

Four ports recorded significant sequential growth in monthly volumes. These include Krishnapatnam (5.2 MMT, +22.6%YoY), Dhamra (3.3 MMT, +36.8%YoY), Tuna (1.15 MMT, +57.6%YoY), and Katupalli & Ennore combined (1.7 MMT, +13.3%).

Mundra Liquid Terminal handled its largest shipment of vegetable oil (soyabean oil) of 61,841 MT surpassing the previous highest of 57,000 MT (palm oil). The Gangavaram Port handled its highest monthly rakes count (88 Nos) on accountofhandlingcoastalcoalcargo foroneofitscustomers.

The investments in rail infrastructure at our ports have been one of the catalysts for our improved operational performance. Continuing that journey, Dahej Port completed

the extension of overhead electric lines, thereby enabling it to handle rakes with electric locomotives of IndianRailways.

With the commissioning of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) line till Dadri in April 23, the double-stack rake services from ICD Dadri to Mundra Port will now become operational. Supported by our ICD at Patli, this connection will further boost volumes at Mundra Port, and the total rail volumes for Adani Logistics. During April, total rail container volumes grew 22% YoY to 47122 TEUs and bulk cargo (GPWIS) volumes jumped 40% YoY to 1.4MMT.Thisongoingdevelopmentof the country's rail network will continue to drive the Logistics Performance Index of India in with thegovernment’sambition.

Cost of transportation of goods from Kolkata to Aizwal was see drop of more than 50% in cost and time when the cargo is sent from Kolkata to Sittwe onto Palletwa and after that via road to Aizwal and the whole of Northeast India. Similarly, goods from Kolkata to Agartala will incur much lesser cost and time via this route. While the length of road from Kolkata to Agartala is around 1600 kms and takes 4 days via roadways, the Sittwe to Chittagong to Sarboom to Agartala will be done in 2 days, saving cost and time. In addition to reduction of traffic on the road, the use of marine transport will considerably bring down environmental cost of transport with drop in fossil fuel carbon emission. This is a wonderful thing which will not only help us economically but also environmentally.”

Govt gets 9 EoIs for Intl Transhipment Port in Andamans & Nicobar

NEW DELHI: The MoPSW has received expressions of interest (EOIs) fromnineplayersfortheRs41,000crore international transhipment port project at Great Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal, a Senior Government official saidrecently.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in a statement said the project is expected to be completed with an investment of Rs 41,000 crore (USD 5 billion), including investment from both government and public-private

partnership (PPP) concessionaires. The proposed port in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will have the ultimate capacity to handle 16 million containers per year, and in the first phase, to be commissioned by 2028 at a cost of Rs 18,000 crore, it will handle more than 4 million containers. Other projects planned around the transhipment port include an airport, township and power plant.

The project is located on the international trade route, with existing transhipment terminals like Singapore,

KlangandColomboinproximity.

The project focuses on three key drivers, which can result in making it a leading container transhipment port — strategic location in terms of proximity (40 nautical miles) with the international shipping trade route, availability of natural water depth of over 20m and carrying capacity of transhipmentcargofromalltheportsin the proximity, including Indian ports, as perthestatement.

India, Russia suspend negotiations to settle trade in Rupees : Sources

NEWDELHI:IndiaandRussiahave suspended efforts to settle bilateral trade in rupees, after months of negotiations failed to convince Moscow to keep rupees in its coffers, two Indian Government officials and a source with directknowledgeofthemattersaid.

This would be a major setback for Indian importers of cheap oil and coal from Russia who were awaiting a permanent rupee payment mechanism tohelplowercurrencyconversioncosts. With a high trade gap in favour of Russia, Moscow believes it will end up with an annual rupee surplus of over

$40 billion if such a mechanism is worked out and feels rupee accumulation is ‘not desirable’, an IndianGovernmentOfficial, whodidnot wanttobenamed, toldReuters.

The rupee is not fully convertible. India’s share of global exports of goods also is just about 2% and these factors reducethenecessityforothercountries toholdrupees.

India started exploring a rupee settlement mechanism with Russia soon the invasion of Ukraine in February last year, but there has been no reported deal done in rupees.

Visibility remains low for the remainder of the year and moving through this market normalisation, we remain focused on proactively managing costs. As we adjust to a radically changed business environment, we continue to support our customers in addressing their supply chain challenges. We are pleased to note that customers continue to value the integrated logistics solutions and close partnership we provide,” says Vincent Clerc, CEOofMaersk.

In Logistics & Services, revenue grew 21% to USD 3.5bn driven by the consolidation of acquisitions. Organically, Q1 was affected by lower volumes caused by inventory corrections, especially with North American and European retailers, which was partially offset by

new commercial wins. Additionally, underlying business performance was impacted by lower rates in Air Freight andweakerdemandineCommerce.

In Terminals, the top line was affected by lower volumes and storage income, both a factor of lower demand and the release of port congestion. Revenue in Terminals decreased to USD 876m from USD 1.1bn, but strong cost control contributed to continued solid financialperformanceinTerminals.

Q1 was marked by continued destocking in Europe and especially North America. While it is difficult to predict the exact timing, Maersk expects volumes to graduallypickupinthesecondhalfoftheyear.
