APSEZ February 2022 cargo volumes rise 14% YoY to 24 MMT MUMBAI: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), during the month of February 2022, handled cargo volume of 24.15 million metric tonnes (MMT), registering a growth of 14.4% on a yearon-year (Y-o-Y) basis.
During the eleven months of FY22, APSEZ's portfolio of ports handled total cargo volume of 283 MMT thus registering a growth of 28% on Y-o-Y basis. APSEZ handled the highest ever container volume in a year. During the eleven months of FY22, its portfolio of ports handled 7.5 million twenty-foot
equivalent (TEUs) of container volume, thus, surpassing 7.2 million TEU's handled in FY21. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone reported 6% decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,479 crore on a 1% rise in revenue to Rs 3,797 crore in Q3 FY22 over Q3 FY21.
Piyush Goyal calls for increasing export share in GDP to 25% NEW DELHI: Industry needs to find out ways to raise the share of exports in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to about 25%, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said recently. He also made a fresh appeal for driving up the share of the manufacturing sector in GDP to 25%. According to the second advance estimate of GDP, manufacturing will make up about 14% of GDP in FY22, while exports of goods and services will account for 20.8%. Of course, the share of merchandise exports would be smaller than this. Addressing the closing session of his Ministry’s webinar on ‘Make in India for the World’, he stressed a five-point vision to promote manufacturing as well as exports. “How can we really take our
manufacturing contribution to the GDP to 25%? Can we increase our global trade to 10% of the size of our economy?… These are ambitious but achievable targets,” he said. “Can we look at being one of the topthree nations in services exports? Can we look at supporting MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) to increase their participation in foreign trade,” Goyal added. ‘World emulating India story’ Citing the “bold reforms” undertaken by the government in recent years, Goyal said India’s Aatmanirbhar (self-reliance) initiative has inspired other nations to adopt its policies. “The world wants to emulate the India story,” he said. “Indian companies should support goods manufactured in our country. The National Single Window System needs to
grow significantly,” he added. Interestingly, in the latest State of the Union Address, US President Joe Biden announced a raft of reforms, aime d at impro ving the live s o f Americans. In his speech, the economic vision of the Biden administration included the need to ‘Make in America’ and ensure jobs creation. In recent years, the Indian government has already been aggressively promoting such ideas by seeking to ensure the ease of doing business as well as living, reduced compliance burden of India Inc and minimal government interference. For instance, India has launched the Jal Jeevan Mission to provide tap drinking water to every household. Already, almost six crore rural households have been provided tap water connection.
India explores payment options for trading with Russia NEW DELHI: India is examining all possible payment mechanisms for continuing trade with Russia, including the one adopted to settle payments with Iran. Foreign banks that don't have operations in countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia or routing payments through Russian banks unaffected by the curbs are among the options under consideration. Third-country banks were used to settle trade with Iran. Two major Russian banks, Sberbank and Gazprombank, are cur rently
exempted from sanctions because they are the main channels of payment for EU's gas and oil imports from Russia. "We are looking into this. Even if these banks face sanctions from the US, payments can be made in euros as these transactions are still being carried out until further sanctions," said a government official, adding that the full impact of the restrictions is yet to be felt. Another option under consideration is the mechanism used to repay Russian debt through a rupee auction held by the Russian central bank. The repayment is
made through the export of identified commodities and services. Bilateral trade between India and Russia is about $10 billion, 1.3% of India's total trade. The Reserve Bank of India and the government are in constant touch over developments as they look to contain the fallout and ringfence the economy, said another person with knowledge of the matter. Any decision on the issue will be taken at the topmost political levels in consultation with the External Affairs Ministry.
Shipping market will stay dysfunctional well into the year, says Ti LONDON: Ti Insight has published its Ocean Freight Rate Tracker for Q1 2022, analysing the market’s evolution using a range of industry data sources as well as its own exclusive survey. After a traumatic year for the industry in 2021, its authors call the market ‘dysfunctional’ and claim that it will stay that way well into the year. The results of Ti’s survey reveal that industry professionals expect an increase in rates over the coming months. Over 60% of respondents replied that they expected prices to ‘increase significantly’ on all three major lanes – Asia-North America; Asia-Europe and Europe-US. Since November 2021, participants have been most anxious about price increases on routes from Asia to the US West Coast although there is slightly more optimism about transatlantic rates. The Ti Global Ocean Freight Rates Index shows that head haul rates are now
over 5.5 times the February 2021 level (Ti Global Ocean Freight Rate Index) Headhaul rates on lanes from China/East Asia to the US West Coast were over $15,000 per FEU at the end of February, up 175% year-on-year. Rates on the backhaul are up 30.2% year-on-year (Freightos). N o r t h A m e r i c a n We s t C o a s t congestion was the highest of all regions tracked at the start of 2022, with high import volumes from Asia leading to ongoing queues. Congestion remains high (waiting times were on average 17 days in mid-February) and may rise again once volumes begin to pick up after the Chinese Lunar New Year (Gocomet). In February 2022, headhaul rates on the China/East Asia – Europe Lane reached $14,728 per FEU, up 79% year-onyear (Freightos). Based on available European port data for Q4-21, volumes are five index points above Q3-21 and up six points yearon-year, showing an upward trajectory,
post-Covid (Ti’s European Port Index). Capacity has risen steadily in the first months of 2022 on China/East Asia to Europe routes. Although capacity has not risen to the same extent as on the transpacific lane, there has been a 3.2% increase since the start of Q4-21 (Alphaliner). Impact of Covid disruption expected to decline Q2 2022 (Ti’s Global Ocean Freight Rate Outlook) While the direct risks of further pandemic-related disruptions appear to be receding in Europe and North America, global vaccine rollouts and the lifting of social and economic restrictions remain uneven. Significantly, Covid-related restrictions cause regular disruptions at Chinese ports and in hinterland operations in Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen and Tianjin. Within an already stretched global system, dysfunction looks set to remain the defining characteristic of the global ocean freight market well into the year.

Adani Skill Development Centre opens Cargo Handling Equipment Training Simulator facility at Krishnapatnam HYDERABAD: A Cargo Handling Equipment Training Simulator facility was inaugurated at the Adani Skill Development Centre (ASDC), Krishnapatnam. With this the Krishnapatnam centre now has three types of ARI simulators –wagon loader, mobile crane and earth moving equipment simulators. These simulators are advanced training tools to effectively train and evaluate operators on safe loading, lifting, digging and dumping techniques. Its design is based on the actual equipment and recreates realistic operations of the equipment. Operators using cranes or loaders, especially at ports, when trained on these simulators, gain skills they require to operate such heavy equipment safely and efficiently. The ASDC has procured the equipment to provide training to the workforce at the Adani Krishnapatnam Port Ltd (AKPL) as part of various courses since these aid in providing
skills outside of the real equipment. These trainings will prepare the operators in such a way that accidents and loss of property and life will be averted to a great extent. The wagon loader equipment simulator is used to load coal, cement, and fertilizer, and it will assist operators in loading materials in a systematic and loss-free manner. At present, 200 operators are working in the Engineering and Training Services (ETS) department. The mobile crane equipment simulator has nine types of design and is most useful in container terminals and the ETS department. This is the backbone of port operations. There are nearly 350 operators working in these two departments and this training will immensely benefit them in operations like loading and discharge of containers. The earth moving equipment simulator involves seven types of operations and is useful for the operators.
“We are extremely delighted to share with you that a Cargo Handling Equipment Training Simulator facility was inaugurated at ASDC, Krishnapatnam. This cutting-edge technology will train and prepare our operators working at the ports to carry out their work smoothly and efficiently,”Mr. Jatin Trivedi, Chief O p e r a t i n g O f f i c e r, A d a n i S k i l l Development Centre. The event was graced by the presence of eminent dignitaries like Shri GJ Rao, Director, Ports and Shri Avinash Chand Rai, CEO AKPL.

India's sugar exports estimate revised upward to 7.5 MT for this year: ISMA NEW DELHI: India's sugar exports are estimated to increase 15.38 per cent year-on-year to 7.5 million tonnes (MT) in the current marketing year 2021-22, on likely rise in demand for the Indian sweetener amid the possibility of a global deficit, industry body ISMA said on Friday. The country has physically exported 4.2 MT of sugar till February of the current marketing year, against the export contracts already undertaken for shipment of six million tonne, it said. Sugar marketing year runs from
October to September. India is the world's second-largest sugar producer after Brazil. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), "India will export 7.5 million tonne sugar in the current season, as against six million tonne estimated earlier." Higher exports from India are possible as the International Sugar Organisation (ISO) in its report has indicated a global deficit of around 1.93 MT for the marketing year 2021-22 (October-September) and
interest of exporters to buy more Indian sugar, it said. Indian exporters are likely to ship another 1.2-1.3 MT in March, taking the total physical exports to 5.4-5.5 MT by then, it added. Sharing the latest sugar production figures, ISMA said total production has reached 25.28 million tonne during the October-February period of the ongoing 2021-22 marketing year, up by 7.68 per cent from 23.48 million tonne of sugar in the year-ago period.
Tea exports during Jan-Dec 2021 declines marginally KOLKATA: Tea exports during the 12 months of 2021 declined marginally at 195.50 million kilogramme from 209.72 million kg during the previous similar period, according to latest Tea Board data. Value of tea exports almost remained the same during the last 12 months which stood at Rs 5,246.89 crore, compared to Rs 5,235.29 crore in the similar corresponding period of 2020. The CIS block remained the largest
importer of Indian tea which stood at 44.57 million kg, lower from 51.63 million kg in the 12 months of previous calendar year. Among the CIS block, Russia was the largest buyer at 34.09 million kg. Iran was the second largest importer after CIS countries. Iran imported 26.18 million kg of tea in the last calendar year, lower from 33.75 million kg in the previous similar period of 2020. USA and UAE imported 14.26 million
kg and 17.08 million kg respectively during the last calendar year, followed by UK and Germany at 9.99 million kg and 9.35 million kg respectively. China also imported volumes at 5.76 million kg as compared to 11.44 million kg in the 2020 calendar year. According to tea industry sources, imports were lower mainly due to shortage of shipping containers and high ocean freight.

Farm Exports rise 23% in April-January NEW DELHI: India’s exports of agricultural items and processed foods rose 23% year on year to $19,709 million during April- January 2021-22, indicating continued robustness of the segment in the country ’s exports basket. According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), rice exports during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year rose 12% to $7696 million compared to previous year. Rice contributes nearly 40% of India’s agriexport basket. The value of the shipment of wheat, on the other hand, witnessed a surge by more than 387% to $1,742 million during the April- January 2021-22 period compared to the previous year. Volume-wise wheat exports rose to a record 6 MT from 1.3 MT of shipment in April-January 2020-21. Though India is not among the top 10 wheat exporters in the global trade, the growth rate of the country’s exports of this item is higher than that of Russia, Ukraine, and the US. Increased demand for
wheat from South Asian countries, particularly Banglagesh, and its bumper domestic output led to the jump. The exports target for products under the APEDA basket is set at $ 23,713 million for 2021-22. In 2020-21, exports of agricultural and processed food products were valued at $ 20,673 million. India is likely to continue holding a major share of global rice trade in the current fiscal year, with an estimated shipment of 21 million tonne (MT), an increase of more than 24% from the previous financial year. The country’s rice exports in the current financial year is likely more than the combined exports of the next three largest exporters — Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan Meat, dairy and poultry products exports rose by more than 13% to $ 3,408 million in April- Januar y 2021-22 compared to $ 3,005 million in the corresponding 10-month period of 202021. Fruits and vegetables exports were
up 16% to $ 1,207 million during AprilJanuary 2021-22 compared to the same period previous year. The processed fruits and vegetables exports were up 11% to reach $ 1,269 million during the first 10 months of 2021-22 against $ 1,143 million in the corresponding period of the previous year. “Our thrust has been on promoting exports of Geographical Indication (GI)tagged products and products sourced from hilly states, while we continue to scout for new markets for exports,” M Angamuthu, chairman, APEDA, told FE. He said spike in exports has been achieved notwithstanding logistical challenges caused by the pandemic. A n g a m u t h u s a i d A P E DA h a s initiated registration of pack-houses for horticulture products to meet the quality requirements of the international market. Registration of export units for peanut shelling and grading and processing units, for instance, is to ensure quality adherence for the European Union and non-EU countries.

7th MARCH 2022 23
MSC signs off another successful TPM Edition GENEVA: As TPM22 came to a close, our representatives had the newfound opportunity to network and engage in person at what is commonly regarded as the premier conference for the transPacific and global container shipping and logistics community. Meeting with existing customers and partners, and exploring new business opportunities, our specialists conducted one-to-one meetings to review how MSC’s solutions might be best adapted to answer their most immediate business needs. Steady progress on the adoption of digital standards Andre Simha, MSC’s Global Chief Digital and Information Officer, virtually took to the stage at TPMTech to investigate where the industry stands on the adoption of common processes and data format standards two years into a pandemic that has seen an acceleration in the uptake of digital solutions. At the panel, led by Senior Editor of Technology, Eric Johnson and alongside Michele Sancricca, Head of Worldwide Tech Solutions, Supply Chain and Logistics at Amazon Web Services and Bill Dobie, Founder & CEO of SEDNA, Andre touched on the dichotomy that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought forward, affecting momentum around the standardisation of the container shipping industr y, while also accelerating the trend towards digitalisation in shipping, as it’s shown the importance of engaging customers through different platforms. Among the examples Andre cited to show the continuous progress that the DCSA and member carriers have been making to streamline international shipping and trade, were the multiparty collaboration (carrier, port, terminal, DCSA) on JIT port call standards in port environments; the Track & Trace standards, which have been adopted and rolled out to customers by seven out of the existing nine DCSA members, and the Future International Trade (FIT) Alliance signed by the DCSA and its members, in addition to BIMCO, FIATA, ICC and SWIFT collaborating to standardise the digitalisation of international trade. When faced with the question of whether the adoption of standards should in fact see an acceleration, Andre explained that while the momentum was decelerated, it was never stopped and
many wins have been achieved in the past two years: “I can understand a certain amount of frustration and impatience, and it’s true that some achievements are slow to come. But I think it’s fair to say that the COVID pandemic has placed huge strains on the industry and has - to a certain extent reduced the speed of adoption of our DCSA industry standards," finally adding that "the validity of the standards and the motivation to adopt them is there, and working on establishing long-lasting foundations takes time.” The evolution of the cold chain Focusing on reefer market trends, Tom Hughes, MSC USA’s Executive Vice President, Import stressed that the trends we are seeing are expected to continue into this year, with the seaborne perishable sector’s growth and containerised seaborne trade continuing to expand. Tom went on to highlight that the level of engagement with shippers and forwarders has dramatically increased in the past couple of years, translating into the ability to find better and more efficient solutions for them. "To our customers, we need to show that we are much more than just asset operators, but a capable business partner who can add value, ideas and solutions: to listen and properly understand the customer and see how our operational activities can support their changing supply chain needs,” commented Tom. MSC globally has expanded its shipments of refrigerated containers year on year - in 2021, we transported more than 2 million TEU of reefer cargo, topping our previous record of 1.9 million in 2020. We continue investing in more reefer containers equipped with the latest technologies, including by expanding our fleet for temperature-sensitive cargo, adding Controlled Atmosphere solutions, and increasing our dedicated teams of over 1,000 reefer experts, who are continuously trained to meet the growing reefer market demands.
