Global Logistics strengthens NVOCC operations with launch of Global Logistics Containers

MUMBAI: GLOBAL LOGISTICS, an established LCL consolidator operating over the past 15 years has always been focussed on solving customer problems. Maritime transport is the backbone of International trade and the Global economy. Around 80% of Global Trade by volume and over 70% of Global Trade by Value are routed via sea to ports across the globe. The pandemic surmounted by shipping blockages has resulted in a huge shortage of containers that have impacted Global trade over the last 2 years. In keeping with its customer-centric philosophy, Global Logistics has announced the launch of Global Logistics Containers to strengthen its NVOCC operations and address the issue of container shortages plaguing the logistics industry. These containers will operate both ways between the Major Indian Ports of Chennai, Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Kolkata, ICD’s and Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, with immediate plans of connecting the Middle East region. India’s logistic costs as a percentage of GDP is 8.35%, says NCAER NEW DELHI: A recent study by National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) has revealed that India’s logistics cost as a percentage of GDP is 8.35% on an average. For years, the government had been of the view that the logistics cost is 14% of GDP. Basing on the NCAER study the government has hired a consultant for assessing the logistics cost and to work out a framework for calculating the

logistics cost based on the wholesale price index and the consumer price index. The NCAER survey has also calculated the logistics cost for individual commodities and sectors, which has revealed that the logistics cost for certain commodities has been as low as 6.05%. The 8% logistics cost brings India at par with developed countries. According to the Ministry of Shipping

officials, “we are setting the objective of bringing down the logistics cost to whatever low is possible, to make our exports and domestic economic activity more effective.” The Commerce and Industry Ministry is now looking at working out an index which can be calculated on a regular basis taking a few commodities and corridors that have a large contribution to the logistics cost.

DGFT seeks Rs. 6,000 cr for its proposed Districts as Export Hubs scheme NEW DELHI : The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has sought Rs. 6,000 crore from the Finance Ministry for its proposed Districts as Export Hubs scheme that aims to help producers across 200 districts scale up manufacturing and find foreign buyers for their goods. The Department of Commerce, under which DGFT falls, has proposed it as a centrally-sponsored scheme, where 60% of the total cost of around Rs. 10,000 crore will be borne by the Centre, and the rest by States. Under the proposal, the DGFT has sought funding to develop 200 of the country’s 750 districts into export hubs in phases. It has sought an allocation of Rs. 50 crore per district. The DGFT is in the process of responding to queries raised by the ministry of finance and other departments. The move comes as the Government is also in the process of deciding on an “ambitious" export target for Fy23. The district export hub scheme, if approved by the finance ministry, will be part of the new foreign trade policy (FTP). The FTP was initially scheduled

for 1 April 2020, but was postponed multiple times to April 2022 owing to the covid-19 pandemic. It was further extended by another six months last month, to September. “We have asked for around Rs. 6,000 crore for the District as Export Hub Scheme. It willb e in the 60:40 ratio as we are seeking its approval as a centrally-sponsored scheme. So, 40% will be borne by the respective States for each district. We are also in touch with the States," said a Government Official. “We had sent a note to the Ministry of Finance, which has raised a few queries. We are going to respond to those and convince the finance ministry for the finances," he added. Commerce and Industry Minister PiyushGoyal has said in order to tap the export potential of agricultural and industrial products, the DGFT is engaging with states and union territories to implement the Districts as Export Hub initiative for all districts of the Country in a phased manner. The initiative, Goyal said, aims to mobilize each district to achieve its potential as an export hub. Under the initiative, District Export Promotion

Committees (DEPCs) have been constituted in most of the districts and products and services with export potential have been identified in each district, he added. India’s exports touched the highest ever $419 billion in 2021-22, exceeding the target fixed for the year by $19 billion. The Department of Commerce has also been implementing the Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme (TIES) since FY18 with the objective of assisting central and state government agencies to create appropriate infrastructure for exports growth. India’s trade deficit reached record levels largely owing to rising oil prices amid the Ukraine war. The deficit jumped nearly 88% to $192.41 billion during FY22 compared with $102.63 billion in the previous fiscal year. While total exports during the last financial year increased to a record high, imports too jumped to $610.22 billion. The government is conducting consultations to decide on an export target for the ongoing fiscal but a number of uncertainties are proving to be an impediment.

India-UAE Trade Pact in Force Now; Commerce Ministry to soon come out with detailed FAQs NEW DELHI: The Commerce Ministry will soon come out with detailed FAQs (frequently asked questions) on the recently implemented free trade agreement between India and the UAE to help the domestic industry understand benefits of the pact in a simple manner, an o f f i c i a l s a i d . T h e I n d i a - UA E Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which was signed on February 18, has come into force from May 1. The official said the FAQs would provide answers to questions including on benefits of the pact for the domestic

industry; the tariff concessions offered by India and the UAE to each other in goods; important categories of products in the exclusion list; export opportunities for India; and definition of 'originating products' under the agreement. Answers to these questions would help the industry easily understand the benefits for their concerned sectors. Under the agreement, India will benefit from the preferential market access provided by the UAE on over 97 per cent of its tariff lines (or products) which account for 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UAE in value terms.

Labour-intensive sectors which will get major boost include gems and jewellery, textiles, leather, footwear, sports goods, plastics, furniture, agricultural and wood products, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and automobiles. Further, Indian service providers will have enhanced access to around 111 sub-sectors from the 11 broad service sectors. The pact is expected to increase the total value of bilateral trade in goods to over USD 100 billion and trade in services to over USD 15 billion within five years.

India’s Pharma exports grow by 103% since 2013-14 Pharma exports in 2021-22 sustain a positive growth despite global trade disruptions NEW DELHI: Indian phar ma exports witnessed a growth of 103% since 2013-14, from Rs. 90, 415 Crores in 2013-14 to Rs. 1,83,422Crores in 2021-22. The exports achieved in 2021-22 is the Pharma Sector’ best export performance ever. It is a remarkable growth with exports growing by almost

USD 10 billion in 8 years. Highlighting the achievement in a tweet, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, ShriPiyushGoyal said that Under the active leadership of Prime Minister, ShriNarendraModi India has been

serving as the 'pharmacy of the world'. It is also noteworthy that around 55 % of our pharma exports cater to highly regulated markets. Indian pharma companies have a substantial share in the prescription market in the US and EU. The largest number of FDA approved plants outside the US is in India.

New Financial Year begins with record exports of $ 38.19 bn in April ‘22 Cont’d. from Pg. 4 Petroleum products (113.21%), Electronic goods (64.04%) and Chemicals (26.71%) led the way in high increase in exports during April, 2022.

India’s merchandise import in April 2022 was USD 58.26 billion, an increase of 26.55% over USD 46.04 billion in April 2021. Value of non-petroleum imports was USD 38.75 billion in April 2022 with a positive growth of 9.87% over non-petroleum imports of USD 35.27 billion in April 2021. Value of non-oil, non-GJ (gold, silver & Precious metals)

imports was USD 34.43 billion in April 2022 with a positive growth of 29.68% over non-oil and non-GJ imports of USD 26.55 billion in April 2021. The trade deficit in April 2022 was USD 20.07 billion.

Impressive beginning in exports to further add enthusiasm, aiming for much higher growth trajectory during the fiscal : FIEO President NEW DELHI: Reacting to the April 2022 Trade Data, FIEO President, Dr A Sakthivel said that the highest-ever exports of over USD 38 billion, during the first month of the fiscal, shows the continuous impressive performance of the exports sector. The outstanding accomplishments of the exporters have consistently not only helped the economy to reap rich dividends but will also support our endeavour to become a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025. Starting the fiscal with such an impressive beginning will further add to the motivation of the exporting community for much higher growth during the financial year, said Dr A Sakthivel. Praising the effort and hard work of the exporters, Dr Sakthivel thanked the government under the able and dynamic leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, whose support and vision coupled with confidence and trust shown on the exporting community has re-invigorated all stakeholders. Dr Sakthivel also welcomed the Union Finance Minister and the Union Commerce & Industry and Textiles Minister for continuously interacting and guiding the exporters to continue on their wonderful export growth trajectory.

FIEO President said that the top sectors, which have performed impressively during the month were Engineering Goods, Petroleum Products, Organic & Inorganic Chemicals, Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, Electronic Goods, RMG of all Textiles, Cotton Yarn/Fabrics/Made-ups, Handloom Products etc. and Plastic & Linoleum. Labour-intensive sectors also contributed to the exports basket, which itself is a good sign, further helping job creation in the Country. FIEO Chief also reiterated that the benefits of the newly signed FTAs and the PLI Scheme will further help us in building on the milestones achieved during the previous fiscal. FIEO President is also of the view that though the government has announced a slew of measures to support exports including the recent announcement of the extension of the interest equalisation scheme, extension of the FTP 2015-20 by another 6 months and extension of time for filing of MEIS/RoSCTL/ROSL scrip, however, there is a need to increase the validity of RoSCTL and RoDTEP scrips to 24 months and link transferability with realisation, extend RoDTEP to EOUs, SEZ and Advance Authorisation, expand usages of RoDTEP and RoSCTL scrips and logistics support for the sector looking at the freight cost.

Schedule Reliability improves in March, says Sea-Intelligence Despite being the highest 2022 reliability figure so far, the score is s ll slightly below the 2021 level COPENHAGEN: Global schedule reliability continues to slowly inch upwards, recording a marginal month-on-month improvement again with the March 2022 figure reaching 35.9%. Despite being the highest 2022 reliability figure so far, the March score is still slightly below the 2021 level, according to the latest update from Sea-Intelligence. "The average delay for LATE vessel arrivals declined again, this time by 0.32 days, to 7.26 days in March. Despite the improvement, the average delay figure has now been over 7 days since August 2021, and continues to be the highest across each month when compared historically." With a schedule reliability of 50.3 percent, Maersk was the only carrier with a score of over 50 percent, followed by

Hamburg Süd with 45.9 percent. There were seven carriers with schedule reliability of 30-40 percent and five with schedule reliability of 20-30 percent. Wan Hai had the lowest schedule reliability in March 2022 of 22.6 percent. "On a Y/Y level, only three of the top-14 carriers recorded an improvement in schedule reliability in March 2022 with the largest improvement of just 1.6 percentage points." The analysis by Sea-Intelligence overs schedule reliability across 34 different trade lanes and 60+ carriers.

NHAI undertakes upgradation & improvement through multiple road linkage connecting JNPT with hinterland road network NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari has said guided by vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to provide enhanced connectivity between the ports and the domestic production and consumption centres across the Countr y, our Government is committed for port led development through construction of world class road network. In a series of tweets Shri Gadkari informed that National Highways Authority of India has undertaken upgradation and improvement of NH-4B (New NH-348, 548) and SH-54 (New NH-348A) at a cost of approximately Rs. 3,500 Crore through multiple road linkage projects connecting JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) with the hinterland road network. The Minister said the projects catering to huge traffic volumes of approximately 48 lakhs will substantially reduce the travel time as well as vehicle operating cost. He said it will bolster the economic development of the region owing to growth of exports and connectivity with Navi Mumbai International Airport. The two grade separators at Karal Phata and Gavan Phata will also speed up lane interchange and connect the national and state roads, the Minister added.

RBI hikes Repo Rate by 40 basis points in emergency meet MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday, 4th May, in an unscheduled meet said that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously voted to hike rates by 40 bps whilst remaining accommodative. The MPC voted unanimously to increase the policy repo rate by 40 bps to 4.40% with immediate effect. The standing deposit facility rate now stands at 4.15% while the marginal standing facility rate and bank rate stand at 4.65%. "The MPC continues to be accommodative while focusing on withdrawal of accommodation to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward," Das said. Headline retail inflation in India rose to a 17-month high in March led by a sharper than expected spike in prices of food and manufactured goods, official data showed. It has now remained over

the RBI's upper tolerance band of 6% for the third straight month. The MPC held an off-cycle meeting on May 2 & May 4 to reassess the evolving inflation-growth dynamics and the impact of the developments after the MPC meeting of April 6-8. "The situation is dynamic and fast changing and our actions have to be tailored accordingly," Das reiterated. The RBI in its April monetary policy had kept its benchmark lending rate at a record low, keeping the repo rate unchanged at 4%. The MPC had opted to maintain its accommodative stance but had voted unanimously to focus on “withdrawal of accommodation to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward, while supporting growth." As per the monetary policy framework, the MPC has to maintain CPI inflation in the 2% to 6% range, with the median target of 4%.

Indian Govt may impose temporary ban on cotton export MUMBAI: The next 3-4 months may be difficult for the Indian textile sector due to limited availability of cotton in the Country. In such a scenario, the government may temporarily ban export of cotton if prices continue to rise, Upendra Prasad Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, has given indications for the same, but there is no timeline from the Government. The textile industry had been demanding the removal of duty on import of cotton for several month, for which the Government finally agreed and removed around 11 per cent duty in mid-April. Immediately after the removal of duty, ICE cotton recorded a sharp rise on the prospects of India’s higher import. In addition, the fear of drought in US’s Texas state also contributed to lifting of ICE cotton prices. Taking cue from global prices, domestic cotton prices in India also surged. Thus, instead of softening, cotton prices increased immediately after duty cut. Industry associations had complained the two-month delay in arriving at the decision of import duty cut led to increase in price from Rs. 60,000-70,000 per candy of 356 kg to Rs. 95,000 per candy. Recently, Singh told reporters that cotton prices are unlikely

to soften until October when the new crop will arrive. As a result, the textile industry will have to face exorbitant cotton prices and limited supply in the global market. Industry bodies argue that currently farmers are not getting any benefit from higher prices as multinational companies of the agriculture sector have accumulated stock of about 50-60 lakh cotton bales of 170 kg each. Future trading of cotton in domestic commodity exchanges is also responsible for upward trend in cotton. So, if the government restricts cotton export, MNCs will be forced to sell stocks in the domestic market which will lead to decline in prices. But market sources said that at present cotton exports from India are decreasing sharply due to price disparity. Earlier, many countries like China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh were importing cheaper cotton from India. But expensive Indian cotton has now become unviable for many countries. According to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), about 40 lakh bales of cotton was exported in the current season till the third week of March 2022.

Freight disruptions pose serious challenges to mango exporters MUMBAI: After two years of lull, as mango exporters gear up for a good season, freight anomaly and sudden stoppage of transport and marketing assistance (TMA) have posed serious challenges for exporters. Sanjay Pansare, Director of the Mumbai Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), stressed on the need to reserve certain portions of cargo with airlines to carry horticultural goods, which will help exporters tap newer markets overseas. For mangoes, aircraft freight is the only way to capture markets in the Middle East, South Korea, Japan, US, European Union and UK as ocean freight has not been very successful.

But as Pansare said at the start of the season, airline companies have decided to increase their rates which has cut into the top lines of exporters. At present, freight charges from Mumbai to Dubai is around Rs 150 per kg while to US it is nearly Rs 550 per kg, which before the start of the season was around Rs 220 per kg. What has perplexed exporters is the different rates charged by airlines for different cities. Thus for Dubai, if the freight charges from Mumbai is Rs 150 per kg, the same from Kochi is just Rs 80 per kg and from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh it is Rs 35 per kg. “The reason which airlines give us for this differential rates is the higher demand from Mumbai, and lower demand from other cities,” he said.

A.P. Moller - Maersk reports record Q1 results while further developing customer relationships Cont’d. from Pg. 4 While global supply chains remain under significant pressure, we continue to demonstrate superior ability to help customers overcome logistic challenges. In Logistics, we enjoyed strong demand for products and solutions across our portfolio leading to the 5th quarter in a row with organic growth of more than 30pct. while Terminals presented its best quarter ever,” said, Mr. Søren Skou, CEO of A.P. Moller – Maersk. In Ocean, revenue increased 64pct. to USD 15.6bn during Q1 as strong rates more than offset a 7pct. decline in volumes. Revenue for the full year is expected to continue to be strong as the increase in freight rates on our long-term contract portfolio will add approximately USD 10bn to revenue in 2022 compared to 2021. This will more than offset the significant increase in costs, which were up 21% in the first quarter given higher fuel costs and inflationary pressure on network and container handling costs. In Q1, revenue in Logistics grew 41pct. to USD 2.9bn compared to same quarter last year as both existing and new customers continue to buy into the full value proposition of integrated solutions. At the same time Maersk continues to invest in acquisitions that add capabilities within technology and e-commerce and strengthen the portfolio such as Pilot Freight Services, which closed on 2 May 2022.

In Terminals, revenue increased to USD 1.1bn in Q1 compared to USD 915m last year and the return on invested capital (ROIC) ended on a record 12.5pct. before impairment in GPI of USD 485m following the exit of the Russian market. The process around the sale of GPI is ongoing. Results in Terminals are driven by higher storage income in NAM, improvement in revenue per move and a volume growth in the overall contracting market. Market situation and guidance for 2022 Freight rates remained elevated in Q1 as Covid-19 and capacity shortages continued to disrupt the supply-side of the logistics industry. Global container demand declined by 1.2pct. compared to +8pct. in 2021 while global air cargo volumes increased by 2.9pct. Trade flow growth flattened from Far East to both North America and Europe. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having a negative impact on trade flows and consumer confidence in Europe. Given this background, global container demand is now expected to grow -1/+1pct, compared to an earlier expectation of 2-4pct. As announced on 26 April 2022, Maersk anticipates an underlying EBITDA of around USD 30bn, an underlying EBIT of around USD 24bn and a free cash flow above USD 19bn for the full year of 2022. This is based on a strong first half of 2022 as well as higher contracted rates, while the normalisation in Ocean is still assumed to take place early in the second half of the year.

Ocean Network Express posts record Profits of USD 16.8 bn SINGAPORE - Ocean carrier ONE has reported a record net profit of US$16.8 billion for its financial year ending March 31 - but for the full-year 2022, its outlook is beset with uncertainties. Overall, liftings were flat, at 12.1 million TEU, mainly due to port congestion on the US west coast, which saw volumes from Asia to North America plunge by 412,000 TEU, to 2.35 million TEU. However, this reduction in liftings on the transpacific was mitigated by increased carryings on other trades, including 156,000 more TEU on headhaul Asia to Europe routes, to reach 1.71 million TEU. ONE's revenue soared by 109 per cent on the previous year, to $30.1 billion, for an average rate of $2,495 per TEU, on the back of continued high spot rates and "significant" increases in its long-term contracts. This produced an EBIT of $17.2 billion and a net profit of $16.8 billion, compared with a net of $3.5 billion for the previous year.

"Despite the impact of seasonal factors, including the Chinese New Year, Russia-Ukraine hostilities and China's recent lockdown, the strong cargo demand continued through January to March," said ONE. CEO Jeremy Nixon lauded the per for mance, particularly the fact that the carrier's EBIT margin was "ahead of ONE's competitor industry peer group". Nevertheless, he was less bullish on the outlook, saying: "It remains cautious, as there are still many trading uncertainties ahead in addition to further expected economic headwinds." He also expressed concern regarding cost increases, which, for example, saw ONE's average bunker price soar 54 per cent during the period, to $512/tonne. "Additionally, there is still a strong need for further investment in decarbonisation and digitalisation over the course of 2022 and beyond," said Mr Nixon. ONE said it was "extremely difficult to announce a reasonable business forecast for the coming financial year" and that its forecasts were "yet to be finalised".

GAC Group and Ocean Shipping & Logistics join forces in exciting new collaboration Experienced team bring more than a century’s experience to new venture AARHUS: The GAC Group has welcomed newly formed Ocean Shipping & Logistics A/S (OSL) as a new member of its logistics network after the two companies entered into a global co-operation agreement. Operational from today (2 May 2022) from its home base in Aarhus, Denmark, OSL has been founded by industry veterans Peter Brun, Lars Kjærulf-Møller, Emil Hersbøll and Svend Heisselberg, who together represent more than 100 years of experience in international maritime transportation. By combining the OSL’s experience and individual approach with the global reach and resources of the GAC Group, the alliance offers the best of both worlds in its comprehensive range of tailor-made logistics services from its base in Scandinavia or with shipments entering or leaving the region.

GAC’s Group Vice President – Commercial, Stuart Bowie, says: “This is a very exciting blend of experience and capability, for GAC, OSL and for customers.” Having OSL as a logistics partner complements the Group’s Danish ship agency operation, GAC Denmark, which provides comprehensive support at ports throughout the country as well as specialist services for the energy sector. The preservation of the environment and biodiversity is one of the pillars of the strategic vision adopted by the CMA CGM Group under the leadership of its Chairman and CEO, Rodolphe Saadé. This partnership with WWF France echoes the many actions taken by the Group to tackle global warming and its effects on biodiversity, such as the decision not to use the “Northern Sea Route” in order to preserve the fragile ecosystems of the Arctic, to strengthen the detection and protection of cetaceans or to stop transporting plastic waste by sea in order to prevent it from being exported to countries where its treatment or recovery cannot be guaranteed.
