Customs Brokers demand Infra changes at Mundra Port

AHMEDABAD: Customs brokers at Mundra Port are seeking a series of infrastructural changes to expedite loadingandclearanceofexportimportshipments.

A representation was recently made by the Mundra Customs Brokers’ Association (MCBA), saying inefficiencies in container movement and slow clearances have led to a surgeinlogisticscostsforexportersandimporters.

India’s accelerating growth can fill the global commodity demand gap left by a slowing China : ANZ

MUMBAI: India’s demand for commodities will likely surge, and it could cover more than half of China’s demand shortfall, especially intheenergysector,ANZbanksaidin a report. China’s growth slowdown is settohurtglobalcommoditydemand, but India could make up for some of thatshortfall,accordingtoANZ.

India’s economic growth is likely to outpace China’s, with the South Asian nation set to become the thirdlargest economy by the end of this decade,thebankpredicted.

That means India’s demand for commodities will likely surge, and it could cover more than half of China’s demand shortfall especially in the energy sector, the bank said in a recentreport.

“India’s demand for commodities isslatedtogrowrapidly,supportedby favorable demographics, urbanization, the expansion of manufacturing and exports and the build-up of infrastructure,” ANZ analystswrote.

India has overtaken China to become the most populous country, and according to ANZ’s data, its rate of urbanization is expected to rise to 40%by2030fromcurrentlevelsof35% — stoking demand for industrial metals and energy commodities which are often associated with a rise in demand for infrastructure and manufacturing.

India will scale up its efforts to decarbonize by 2030, but those efforts may be frustrated by the nation’s rapidlygrowingenergyneeds…

India’s annual demand for major commodities — like oil, coal, gas, copper, aluminum and steel — is expected to rise collectively by more than 5% from now till 2030, the bank estimated.

In comparison, China’s demand for these same commodities will slow to between 1% to 3%, accompanying a projected GDP slowdown to 3.5% growth by the end of this decade. China’s second-quarter GDP expanded 6.3% year-on-year, falling

below market expectations for 7.3% growth.

Mostprominentpick-up?

The pick-up in India’s demand will be most prominent for oil and coal, in line with the country’s heavy oil importdependencyatmorethan80%, ANZpredicted.

“India will scale up its efforts to decarbonize by 2030, but those efforts may be frustrated by the nation’s rapidly growing energy needs, a significant share of which may still have to be met by fossil fuels,” the analystswrote.

India’s petroleum product consumption for 2024 is estimated to rise almost 5% from current levels to 233,805 thousand metric tonnes, India’s Petroleum Planning and AnalysisCellprojects.

According to ANZ’s counterfactual scenario, even if China’sgrowthisnotslowing,Indiais estimated to make up for 60% of China’s slack in coal demand in 2030, and66%foroil.

Ports expansion to accelerate container trading in India

HAMBURG: The India container market forecaster reveals a notable decline in the Container Availability index (CAx) value from May 2023, indicating that container exports now exceedimportsatIndianports.

“The average CAx value has steadily dropped as illustrated,” according to the latest update from ContainerxChange.

Mundra port, India’s largest container port, reported a 4.4 percent year-on-year growth in Q1FY24 for container handling. The port swiftly recovered from the operational disruption caused by cyclone Biparjoy, accelerating container dispatches to surpass pre-storm throughput levels. “With container ships docking promptly upon arrival, congestion and delays have been mitigated,”saystheportauthorities.

Christian Roeloffs, CEO & CoFounder, Container xChange says: “The market scenario is looking positive and promising in India. With trade lanes being reestablished, we expect container freight rates to

return to early pandemic levels in the second half of CY23. This trend is likely to continue in the following quarters of FY24, which will boost foreign containerised trade and improveearningsforportoperators.

“Indian ports have shown resilience, thanks to improved efficiency, strategic investments in infrastructure, and stable freight rates. Looking ahead, the focus on infrastructure development opens excitingopportunitiesforIndiaonthe trade map and will strengthen its position as a favourable container tradedestination.”

Container prices continue decline

In July 2023, the average container pricefor40HCcontainerwas$1,927at Mundra, $1,918 at Chennai and $1,824 at Nhava Sheva compared to $3,630 in Mundra, $3,931 in Chennai and $3,972 in Nhava Sheva during the same period last year. “The prices peaked startingJuly2021andeversincehave beendroppinggradually.”

The average dwell time at Indian ports has improved significantly,

matching top-ranking countries like Singapore,andshowcasingenhanced efficiency and performance in global trade.

“India’scargohandlingcapacityat ports is set to receive a significant boost with the commissioning of new facilities at Vizhinjam in Kerala and the commencement of work at VadhvaninMaharashtrain2024.

“Officials have indicated that the first stage of Vizhinjam Port is nearing completion, making it the country’s first mega transshipment containerterminal.Thisdevelopment is expected to strengthen India’s maritime infrastructure and enhance trade efficiency, solidifying the nation’s position as a prominent player in international shipping and logistics.

“India is also actively creating 5,000 km of multi-country waterways to enhance trade and transportation across the region. This initiative promises improved logistics, stronger regional ties, and economic growthforallinvolvednations.”

The next fastest growing logistics brands were Door Dash up 39%, and fellow container shipping line CMA CGMwithan18%growthofitslogisticsbrandvalue.

Growth in the logistics space for Maersk has included the acquisition of LF Logistics in Asia as well as growing its air cargo business with the launch of Maersk Air Cargo, which has a fleet of 21 aircraft and one on order.

The ranking noted that Maersk’s logistics business had achieved record revenues with continued growth forecast. In 2022 Maersk booked logistic revenues of $14.4 billion up from $9.83 billion in the previous year.

However, revenues from logistics were dwarfed by its ocean shipping business which reported revenues of $56.5 billion in 2022 up from $42.4 billion in 2021. Maersk has been cutting the size of its container shipping fleet selling vessels and ending charters and according to analyst Alphaliner it reduced its liner capacity by 2.1% to 4.14 million TEU between January and July this year.

Overall Brand Finance ranked Maersk as the eighth most valuable logistics brand globally at a value of $7.1 billion. Top the league table for logistics brand value, despite an 8% drop over the previous year, was air express giant UPS with brand value of $35.4 billion.

Snowman Logistics : Registers 48% growth in Revenue in Q1 FY-24

MUMBAI: During the quarter ended June 30, 2023, Snowman Logistics Ltd recorded revenue of INR. 128.77 Crores as against INR 87.29 Crores for the same period in the previous year, registering a growth of 48%. EBITDA increased to INR 25.42 Crores from INR 21.26 Crores, registering a 20% growth for the same period in the previous year and PAT increased to INR 3.38 Crores from INR 1.89 Crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year, registering a growth of 79%.

Pursuant to the approval by the Board of Directors in their meeting held on 1st August 2023, the Company has declared first interim dividend of Rs.1 per equity share for the FY 2023-24.

Speaking about the performance, Mr. Sunil Nair, CEO, Snowman Logistics Limited said, “We are happy that all our addition of capacities in last year have been fully utilised and are adding to our revenue and profit. We are also experiencing robust growth plans by our key customers, giving us confidence in continuing our investments in expansion. We continue to boost our asset light initiatives (SnowLink and dry warehouse leasing), to add capacity”.
