Adani Group prot jumps 55 % in FY24; eyes USD 90 bn investment over next decade

AHMEDABAD: Adani group saw a 55 per cent profit surge in the fiscal year ended March 2024 as the applesto-airport conglomerate is back on an expansion spree and eyeing a USD 90 billion capex over the next decade.

Emerging from a damning report of a US short seller, which hit market value of its listed companies, Adani group in 2023-24 (April 2023 to March 2024) fiscal focused on containing debt, reducing founder share pledge and consolidating business in core competencies.

This helped net profit surge to Rs 30,767 crore for the group’s listed companies in the fiscal from Rs 19,833 crore a year ago, according to exchange data and analysts.

The 5-year CAGR (compound annual growth rate) for profit growth was 54 per cent.

E B I T D A ( e a r n i n g s b e f o r e interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) rose 40 per cent to Rs 66,244 crore despite a 6 per cent fall in the revenue.

“Total group EBITDA grew 40 per cent year-on-year in FY24 (5-year CAGR of over 27 per cent), group r a i s e d f r e s h f u n d s f r o m equity/debt/strategic investors, promoter increased stake in group c o m p a n i e s a n d g r o u p M c a p

rebounded,” Jefferies said in a note. “The group is back on an expansion spree and eyeing USD 90 billion capex over next decade.”

Group leverage was at a multiyear low, the US-based brokerage said.

“Net debt at the group level (8 companies plus debt related to cement business acquisition) remained stable at Rs 2 2 lakh crore in FY24 vs Rs 2 3 lakh crore. Net debt/EBITDA improved materially to 3 3x FY24 EBITDAvs5xyear-on-year,”itsaid.

Adani Ports and Adani Power saw a drop in net debt in FY24. Increase in leverage for Adani Enterprises and Adani Green was on the back of new capex projects undertaken by companies.

In FY24, the group’s flagship Adani Enterprises commissioned an ingot wafer unit as part of solar module manufacturing, wind turbine facility and copper smelter. Adani Cement completed the Sanghi Cement acquisition while promoters infused more funds in the company

Adani Ports acquired Gopalpur port, Adani Power commissioned 1.6 GW Godda power plant, Adani Green added 2 8GW renewable energy capacity and commenced operations of solar power project in

Khavda, Gujarat, and Adani Energy Solutions put up 1,244 circuit kilometers of transmission lines.

On the way forward, Jeferries said, “Adani Enterprises is amid scaling its captive manufacturing capacity towards starting green hydrogen production by FY27; Navi Mumbai Airport appears likely to commission by 4QFY25; data centre projects are scaling up.”

India keen to operate Bangladesh’s Major Port

DHAKA: India already has secured transshipment facilities at Bangladesh’s two seaports in Chittagong and Mongla for carrying cargoes to its landlocked seven-sister states in the North East to avoid travelling over 1,650 kilometres.

Earlier in May, a delegation of India Ports Global Limited, led by its Managing Director Sunil Mukundan, visited Mongla Port to see the facility and had a meeting with high-ups of the port authority where they expressed their interest in operating the port.

“Yes, they came to visit our port and expressed interest to be involved in port operations,” confirmed a senior official of the Mongla Port Authority

If successfully negotiated, Mongla will be the third international port operation for India after Chabahar

Port in Iran and Sittwe in Myanmar, which both are managed by India Ports Global Limited.

The Indian company has been asked to submit a detailed written proposal to the Mongla Port Authority for consideration. The representative of the Mongla Port Authority said the delegation was told that after receiving the proposal it would be evaluated and if found profitable then would be sent to the government for a decision.

However, the official noted that a few weeks have already passed, but the written proposal from the Indian state-run company has not been received. “Maybe they are calculating the pros and cons to prepare the p r o p o s a l , ” p o i n t e d o u t t h e spokesperson.

Presently the Mongla Port has five jetties through which it handles

container and bulk carrier vessels. Construction of two more jetties is going on to handle increased volume of cargo generated thanks to transshipment facilities given to India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

India offered a line of credit worth US$600 million to Bangladesh in 2015 to upgrade Mongla port facilities and subsequently a project was approved in 2018. In late 2022 the Mongla Port Authority signed a deal with Egis India Consulting Engineers to take forward the development works.

I n 2 0 1 6 , C h i n a e n l i s t e d 2 7 Bangladeshi projects for funding, including a US$400 million fund for the expansion and modernization of Mongla port facilities. Although China was slow to release the funds, in December 2022, Beijing informed Bangladesh that it was ready to proceed with the project.
