PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE I had the great joy of hosting our Veteran Members lunch. These members have been in and around the club for over 25 years and they are the keepers of the club traditions. It was wonderful to see so many of you in the Auditorium.

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

Welcome to 2019! Boy, just where did last year go?

It was wonderful to see all our members with little ones joining the fun of the festive season (Santa is a personal favourite of mine) and I hope you enjoy a wonderful, safe break with your family and friends. Ramsgate RSL Club is here for our members as a place in our community to gather and belong – I am very proud of the Club and the work our management and staff do in the community and Christmas time at Ramsgate RSL was no different. Thank you to everyone who donated terrific Christmas presents for us to share in the community to the less fortunate. In the last few weeks of 2018, the Board and

2019 is the Chinese Year of the Pig and I’m told that it will be a year of good fortune and good luck. It is said to bring a year of joy, happiness and friendship and that’s exactly what we want for our members and friends! This first few months of our New Year sees your Club continue to bring you the fun and games in our little corner of the world for our much valued members. I can’t wait to see our community of members join in the Obstacool fun in Pemberton Reserve over the Australia Day weekend. We will be fundraising for The Shepherd Centre, whose valuable work assists deaf children by giving them access to sound as soon as possible so that they can learn to listen and speak. Check out the Obstacool details later in this magazine and come and say hi! This quarter sees our wonderful local schools start the new school year – thanks to the teachers who work hard to ensure our children are safe and learning. The world is changing at such a fast pace now and it is as important as ever that the youth of our community are learning to create wonderful futures for themselves.

Welcome to the first edition of your Club Magazine Road to Ramsgate for 2019! Each year just seems to go by faster than the last. I hope you and your families had a wonderful Christmas and are as excited to be celebrating the New Year with us as we are with you. 2018 saw some amazing results for the Club. Our membership saw exponential growth to an amazing 12,500 members, a result not seen in our 61 year history. We hope to only grow further as we bring you the Club the community chooses.

In our neck of the woods, the Bayside local government area, the Bayside Women’s Shelter is now open and providing valuable assistance to those in our community that need it. The reality is, even though we wish these services were not necessary, they are and are being provided by wonderful volunteers and helpers. Ramsgate RSL is proud to support this necessary work in our area. I’m looking forward to the year ahead as Ramsgate RSL Club continues to give to our community, volunteering via our Ramsgate CARE Program and provide a wonderful environment for our great members and their friends. Wishing you all a terrific 2019, cheers.

WINNERS We have also seen great improvements in the Club’s financial position, the result of our mix of food and beverage offerings, Club activities and events, and promotions and major draws. This makes us confident that we are moving in the right direction and sustaining a positive future for your Club.

FROM THE CEO

This time of the year also sees our junior and senior sporting teams preparing for and commencing their new season. Good luck to all and thank you for your volunteer services. We know that without our volunteers; coaches, managers, umpires, referees, canteen helpers and the like, we wouldn’t be participating like we do. The Board and management get great pleasure in knowing that our locals are out and about playing sport. Ramsgate RSL will remain a major supporter of these sporting groups as long as we can.

As mentioned in our last magazine, the Club was nominated as finalists in three categories of the prestigious industry awards by peak body ClubsNSW. With a record number of entries into the competition, I am thrilled to share that we were presented with Highly Commended awards in two categories. This included the ‘’Youth Leadership” category with our Bridging the Gap between Youth and the ANZAC Spirit initiative, and the “Clubs in Collaboration” category for our fundraising efforts for our Foundation Charity Partner Bayside Women’s Shelter. We are honoured to have been acknowledged for our work in the community especially since the launch of our employee volunteer program, the Care Program in April 2018. We are excited about the future work we will be involved in that will make a real difference within our local and surrounding communities.

I wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank our members who have willingly contributed to our many fundraising events and donation drives held in 2018. It is because of your support and encouragement we know we can make a real difference and support the fantastic initiatives we have planned for 2019, including our newest care program initiative, the ‘’School Care Project”. See page 6 for more detail, including how you can jump on board and help local schools with their own CARE Projects that aim to make a difference to students and their families. We have a jam packed year of events planned already for 2019 with our Australia Day activities, Major Money Tree cash promotion, St Patrick’s Day activities, revised promotional activity schedule and much more happening – and that is just for the first quarter of the year. I will sign off again with sincere thanks for your loyalty and patronage. I hope you are as proud as I am to share with your family and friends what a great club, your Club Ramsgate RSL has become, and we look forward to sharing another year with you.

SCHOOL CARE PROJECT Ramsgate RSL are proud to be launching their very first School Grant program, the ‘School Care Project’ aimed at supporting our local schools to help make our community a better place. Ramsgate RSL will donate a total of $10,000 to three schools within a 15km radius of the club to support their projects that fall under our CARE Program framework; Community Awareness and Respecting our Environment! “We are calling on applications from local

primary and high schools and would love to hear what projects they have in the pipeline whether it be sustainability or community focused” said Commercial Manager, Nicole Heinrich “This is a great opportunity for schools to share an idea they may have had on a project, but couldn’t get off the ground simply due to funding restrictions”. Applications from schools to enter this program will open 1st February 2019 and are due by 15th March 2019. A judging panel consisting of club personnel as well as local council representatives will choose 3

successful schools that our club patrons will then vote amongst to determine the grant value. “We are giving patrons the opportunity to vote on the local school that they believe are doing great things in our community” said Nicole “We want our whole community to get involved!” For more information and details on our School Care Project, please visit www.ramsgatersl.com. au/community/schoolcare-project/

Water Safety for our local children Summer is the month of having fun swimming and being around water, but most importantly highlights how critical water safety is. Located by the water, Ramsgate RSL understand the importance of water safety and as such have proudly donated $15,000 to our local Ramsgate Nippers to provide ongoing water safety and skills instruction to the young people in our community. For people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. Most water-related accidents can be avoided by knowing how

to stay safe and following a few simple guidelines. Ramsgate Life Saving Club has been supporting the local community since 1934! Ramsgate Nippers runs yearly between October and March and is a fun way for kids aged from 3 – 16 years to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and learn water safety in a controlled environment. In addition to providing water safety, the Ramsgate Life Saving Club also provide a venue for local community groups such as St George Hospital and Merry Hearts Emphasima Group to undertake exercise.

As part of Ramsgate RSL’s support of the Life Saving Club, they have also committed to sending volunteers once a month down to the beach to host their BBQ! “Nippers rely heavily on the sales from their canteen to help fund projects within their club” said Marketing Coordinator Diana Nasr. “It is great to have the team join the Nippers crew early on a Sunday morning to witness the great work they are doing for our community”.

National Recycle Week Supporting National Recycle Week, Ramsgate RSL team and members proudly collected corporate clothing in a bid to empower women. The donation drive was conducted for organisation ‘Dress for Success’ who collect professional clothing for women during job interviews. They also provide styling advice, career support workshops and coaching/ mentoring for women in need. This was the second year in which Ramsgate RSL have hosted this collection “Building

confidence and self-esteem in women in our community is vital” said Club President Sallianne Faulkner “We are all about belonging here at Ramsgate RSL and we are proud to be helping women in their journey”.

Ramsgate RSL also partnered with local Ramsgate Public School for Recycle week and proudly displayed some very creative art pieces made by the students on sustainability. The exhibition “Where the Forest meets the Sea” was well received by club patrons and helped to promote the role

Ramsgate RSL Donate New Bikes to Bayside Womens’ Shelter Ramsgate RSL are proud to be founding supporters of the newly opened Bayside Women’s’ Shelter, a home to women and children affected by Domestic Violence and in need of support and care from the community to get back on their feet. As a Foundation Charity partner of Ramsgate RSL our team had the privilege of visiting the shelter as it prepares to welcome these families into their new home. It is a sad reality that you only have to turn the tv on these days to hear of another visual story, and turn another page of the paper to see the staggering statistics confronting us about the devastating and frequent fatalities that Domestic Violence can lead to. Ramsgate RSL donated over $10,000 via Club Grants to their mission and vision to give these families hope for their futures.

“Our very own team were proud to be able to give back with the donation of these new bikes, hand built by the team, to see smiles on children’s faces that have been lost,” said Diana Nasr, Marketing Coordinator. “We thank Clr Christina Curry, Chairperson of the shelter, for taking time to meet our team and describe the impact the shelter, and even these bikes will have on local families in our community.”

High Tea Fundraiser in support of Women’s Cancer Thank you to all our members and guests who have attended our High Teas over the past 12 months. Our most recent being in support of the Pink Ribbon campaign. Sadly, every day around 12 Australian women will die from women’s cancer. We are proud to share that over $2000 was raised through two High Tea events in 2018, which has been donated directly to Cancer Council in support of their awareness campaigns. As reported by the Cancer Council, The Pink Ribbon Campaign has contributed significantly to the survival rate of women with cancer. The 5 year survival rate for breast cancer increased by 17% from 1982 to 2012, and the 5 year survival rate for women with a gynaecological cancer increased by 7% in the same period thanks to advancements in research and prevention programs. Thank you to the following businesses who generously donated to our Raffle Fundraisers, Hamperman, Eventful Tours and Treasury Wines. Stay tuned for our next High Tea Fundraiser event to occur in April 2019.
