PRESIDENT & CEO MESSAGE As we head further into 2019, our wonderful team continue to generously support the community that they work in via our Ramsgate RSL CARE Program. Just recently they have built prosthetic hands for victims of landmine explosions, donated blood at the Red Cross, and cooked sausage sandwiches in an effort to raise funds and awareness for our local Ramsgate Nippers.

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

ANZAC Day is a significant day on the calendar for Ramsgate RSL Club and our extended community. ANZAC Day allows us a moment to reflect on how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful country and in such a beautiful area. Walking alongside our veterans in the Ramsgate RSL Sub-Branch, we look forward to welcoming our entire community and visitors on this day as we commence with a moving ceremony of commemoration at 7.20am, Thursday 25th April (Lest We Forget).

FROM THE CEO As I begin this report, I remind myself how quickly the last 18 months have gone. In July 2017, I proudly commenced the role of Chief Executive Officer. Since commencing, the team and I have been in a phase of discovery around the future possibilities of your Club. Faced with increasing expenses over the past five years and reducing revenue, we have focused on the operational needs of the business and making the Club more efficient. We have also prioritised its people and connecting with our community. I am proud to say that in a year of mixed results in the Club industry and the economy at large, we have achieved unprecedented success for Ramsgate RSL. The Club’s financial position ending 2018 reflects the hard work and decision making of

Additional to this, we are proud to share the positivity and enthusiasm towards our newly launched School Grants program, the “School Care Project” has been overwhelming. Local schools are taking the opportunity to make something great happen in our community. In Helen Keller words, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” so we are preparing for great things from our school students and teachers. See page 7 for more details on how you can vote and see these projects come to fruition.

proud to assist in this journey. On the business front, in May we hold our Annual General Meeting. I encourage you to note the date and join us for this meeting with the details included further in this edition of the Road to Ramsgate. It is an important process in the governance of our Club. If you have any questions, please get in touch. May also sees us celebrate all the mums in our community. We hope you have a terrific Mother’s Day and thank you for all that you do in your family and in our community. Ramsgate RSL Club is a community facility so please use it to enjoy a break and get spoilt. Life in the Fast Lane, Hotel California and Take it to the Limit are all songs that immediately take me to some great memories. We are looking forward to sharing the Eagles Tribute Show with you all on Saturday 27th July! On a final note, our thoughts are with those throughout Australia who are struggling with the force of mother nature, delivering drought, flooding rains and fires. We hope they get the support they need to get back to the beautiful place they are.

This in turn is a timely reminder that with the Winter season sports upon us, all I need say is, ‘Go the Blues’ and ‘Go the Rams’. Much hard work is done in the off season by our volunteers - thank you. For the children, the fun of participating in team sport gives them valuable life lessons about teamwork and communication, Ramsgate RSL Club are very

the Board and management team. Ramsgate RSL had a net accounting profit of $1,862,624 compared to a loss of ($112,151) in 2017, an EBITDA of $4,095,949 compared with $1,941,242 in 2017 – a 111% increase, and increased total revenue by over two million dollars to $18,146,005.

been able to assist over 33 different charities, sporting groups and other organisations who may not have received support otherwise. The program provided support to local sporting groups and charitable organisations to the tune of $445,498 and accounted for 300 volunteer hours in the community.

A significant reason for our growth in 2018 was the introduction of our two dining areas, The Kitchen by Mike’s Grill and Zen Restaurant. The quality and variety of food that these two operations have delivered has been exceptional and large reason for our increased foot traffic. Thank you Mike from The Kitchen by Mike’s Grill and Linda and Ben from Zen.

Our Customer Experience Academy has focused on our people within the Ramsgate team, where we have combined internal, external and accredited training to upskill our people with over 25 training engagements carried out.

During the year, the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team have continued to work hard on strategic planning, with an emphasis on creating a vision and focus for Ramsgate RSL. Our vision – Together, We Create the Club the Community Chooses – remains as relevant today as to when it was created, and is in line with our evolving demographic and customer behaviours. We remain focused on our people and community, and providing a great asset and facilities for the enjoyment of the entire community. We launched two significant initiatives this year – our employee volunteer ‘CARE program’ as a way to give back, and our Customer Experience Academy to develop our team. CARE, or Community Awareness and Respecting our Environment, has become the framework that underpins how we help and care for our community. In just under a year we have

As we move forward, it is important to recognise that the Club industry is evolving and changing. The Ramsgate team fully embraces change and the challenges and rewards that it brings, as we know that it ensures an exciting and positive future for your Club. I would like to thank our President, Mrs Sallianne Faulkner as well as the entire Board for their unwavering support over the last 12 months. I would also like to thank the great Ramsgate RSL team who have supported the need for change and the management team who continue to inspire as leaders within the Club. Most importantly, I wish to thank our valued Members. Your loyalty to Ramsgate RSL has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated – thank you! GIVING HOPE TO LANDMINE VICTIMS Ramsgate RSL were proud to recently build 3 prosthetic hands which are now on their way to being donated to amputee landmine victims throughout the developing world through the ‘Helping Hands Program’. The Helping Hands Program which was founded within Australia has been building and delivering prosthetic hands since 2012. They have the goal to build 20,000 hands by December 2020. The hands play an important role in giving independence back to those who have lost the use of their arms due to landmines and other major accidents. The need for prosthetic hands continues to grow at an increasing rate, with 2,000 landmines accidents occurring throughout the world each month - that equates to 1 every 20 minutes! The Ramsgate RSL volunteers were excited to extend the help of their Volunteer CARE Program to those affected in developing countries. “Making mechanical hands for victims of landmine explosions was an insightful, emotional and rewarding experience” said Ramsgate RSL Marketing Coordinator, Diana Nasr. “Ramsgate RSL are just super proud to have been able to make a real and lasting contribution to those affected and to be able to assist the Helping Hands Program in achieving their goal for 2020!” said Ramsgate RSL Commercial Manager, Nicole Heinrich.

Ramsgate RSL are proud to be supporting Learning Links as their Charity Housie partner and helping children with learning difficulties in the local community. Cash Housie & Bingo takes place at Ramsgate RSL every Wednesday evening from 7pm with all proceeds from the session going to the not-for-profit charity, Learning Links. Learning disabilities and difficulties are common with 5-15% of children being affected. Without early intervention, the gap between children with a learning difficulty/disability and their peers widens as they get older. Learning Links believe in early identification and intervention helping children with their skills in literacy, numeracy, speech/occupational therapy and psychology. “With Ramsgate RSL being such a popular dining destination in our local area for young families, it was only fitting to support Learning Links as they work in partnership with many local families and schools.” said Commercial Manager, Nicole Heinrich. “We want to help children in our local area reach their full potential just as they deserve”.

THE COOLEST EVENT TO HIT RAMSGATE

RAISES DOLLARS FOR THE SHEPHERD CENTRE It was the coolest event to hit town with the biggest inflatable obstacle course, Obstacool. With the summer heat soaring, nothing could stop these 400 kids booked in from a great time! Best of all, it was all in support of The Shepherd Centre, a support clinic for children with hearing impairments, including deafness. The Shepherd Centre now provides a range of school age services in National Disability Insurance Scheme areas. Their programs and services enable families living with hearing loss to build support networks, access state-of-the-art resources and help their child develop age-appropriate language, listening and social skills. A refreshing result was the coolest end to the day, with $1,500 being raised from the days sausage sizzle and donations. Thank you to all the families that joined us in support of this great event and cause, and a special shoutout to the volunteers at The Shepherd Centre for coming along and helping out on the day.

Ramsgate RSL are proud to have recently introduced to our Environmental Care initiatives Method Recycling Bins, to help onsite waste management practices. Method Bins are specifically designed to alert and help divert waste from landfill to make a visible difference. This simple yet extremely effective initiative is the missing puzzle piece amongst Ramsgate’s current environmental care initiatives. Having the bins placed in their office admin and staff back of house spaces empowers better waste separation amongst the Ramsgate team. “Our Method Bins encourage accountability and action whilst saving costs and labour in sorting recycling rubbish within communial waste stations” said Facilities Manager, Sean Dean. “It makes recycling visible, flexible and most of all fun amongst our team”. Ramsgate RSL are committed to creating an environmentally sustainable future with their CARE Program and are excited to announce they are the proud major sponsor of local Sans Souci Community Veggie Patch set to be built this year. Stay tuned with more details and follow our sustainability progress on our website and facebook page. April/May/June

LEADING THE WAY TO MAKE

A REAL DIFFERENCE Ramsgate RSL are proud to have partnered with one of our charity foundation partners The Settlement, in their renowned Leadership Program. This is a program based on leadership, identity, culture, confidence and motivation. The program finishes with a cultural camping trip to Alice Springs and Uluru where all involved get to put into practice the life skills developed through the 8 week program.

The following responses were the key to Ramais’ successful selection.

What will you bring with you as a leader to the youth of this program?

What do you think a leader is?

“Some of the traits that I stand by and instill in my own family are what I will bring including fun, honesty, commitment, accountability, communication and empathy.”

“A good leader is someone who tells another how to achieve ones goals. A great leader is someone who inspires ones true potential, creativity, and sees positive in the negative. I inspire to be great.”

Ramai Wilson, Guest Services Attendant at Ramsgate RSL was selected to go on this once in a life time opportunity.

We will follow Ramai’s journey through this program and encourage her ability to make a real difference in the lives of the youth within the program.

The CEA was developed as a way of both rewarding our team members and helping them to gain lifelong skills with a focus on knowledge, growth and improvement. The two outstanding aspects of the academy were Emotional Intelligence training for our managers and a Certificate III in Hospitality, delivered on site. We are proud to acknowledge and congratulate the nine employees who have completed this course over the past 12 months. The CEA program is about investing in the development and future of our employees and a year on, we can see that it is a success. The 2019 program has already seen many great achievements by all team levels.
