The Class of 2025 is proud to select Russell Composto, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Penn’s inaugural Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, as a Sphinx honorary member. For more than 35 years Dr. Composto has taught Penn Engineers as a global innovator in polymer science. Beyond his scientific research, Dr. Composto has been a pioneering leader developing new undergraduate engineering curriculum, individualized student advising, and first-generation/low-income programming and support systems in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. A LETTER FROM PENN PRESIDENT
To the Class of 2026: Your moment has arrived. The cap and gown are waiting, and so is the world.
This is an extraordinary year to graduate. The United States is celebrating its 250th anniversary this summer, and Penn, founded in 1740, is older than the nation itself. Penn did not simply witness the birth of America. It helped shape the ideals that made America possible. You will carry that history forward as your Class helps shape what comes next.
During your time at Penn, you found your footing and your friends. You asked hard questions and sat with uncertain answers. Benjamin Franklin believed that an educated person had an obligation to the world beyond themselves. You honored that belief.
There is a song that seemed to follow your class everywhere this year, “Golden,” from KPop Demon Hunters, and it is hard not to hear it as yours. An anthem about identity and self-empowerment, “Golden” found its way into seemingly every social gathering and public event. You are, indeed, going to be golden. The friendships forged here, the grit that led to breakthroughs, and the people who saw something in you before you saw it yourself, carry that forward.
