A commencement ceremony for all of this year’s SU and SUNY-ESF graduates will be held in the Carrier Dome on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Donald Newhouse, president of Advance Publications, will be the keynote speaker for Sunday’s commencement ceremony.

Martin J. Speaker has strong ties to SU

For years, David Rubin and later Lorraine Branham tried to convince Donald Newhouse to accept an honorary degree from Syracuse University.

Each time Newhouse was offered such a NEWHOUSE degree, most everyone was on board with the idea, from either Rubin or Branham — the former and current deans, respectively, of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications — to the SU chancellor at the time.

Everyone, that is, except Donald Newhouse. He repeatedly turned down the proposals, said Branham and Rubin, which they saw as a sign of his self-effacing personality.

That is why Branham said she was shocked when, in January, SU Chancellor Kent Syverud came to her office in Newhouse I to tell her that Donald Newhouse had agreed to Syverud’s offering of an honorary degree. The offer was coupled with Syverud requesting that Newhouse deliver the speech at

Data shows promising employment outlook for graduates

“Things are still recovering but every year is a little bit better than the one before,” Barnett said.

The perception of the job market among employers is also improving. Forty-two percent of employers who participated in an annual NACE Job Outlook survey described the job market for Class of 2016 graduates as “very good or excellent” — a significant jump from two years ago when only 18 percent of employers gave such positive outlook for the Class of 2014.

The latest available data from Career Services shows graduates from the SU class of 2014 had 88 percent placement rate, meaning they got full-time employment or went to graduate schools.

Based on responses from 1,333 out of 3,116 bachelor’s degree recipients from the Class of 2014, 71 percent were employed full time, 17 percent attended graduate schools, 6 percent were still seeking, 3 percent were doing internship and 2.9 percent were employed part time, according to the Class of 2014 Outcome Report.

The average base salary for graduates of the SU Class of 2014 was $47,107, according to the Career Services’ Outcome Report.

The unemployment rate for recent college grads — individuals between 22 and 27 years of age who hold a bachelor’s as of December — stood at 4.6 percent, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Salas said Career Services is open throughout the summer for SU students who are in the middle of their job or internship search process.

The job prospect for college graduates in the Class of 2016 is in upward trend across many industries.

Magnolia Salas, a communications and marketing coordinator in Syracuse University's Career Services, said the job prospect for 2016 graduates is good based on the data collected from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) — the statistic Career Services uses as a standard to evaluate the job prospect.

“A lot of employers are definitely ramping up their hiring because, you know, they are seeing more profits, their budgets are bigger, they are trying to see the needs and new places that might not have been before,” Salas said.

Employers in the United States are planning to hire 11 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2016 than they did from the Class of 2015, according to NACE.

She added that the communication industry is “unique” in that employment prospect in the sector generally cannot be speculated months in advance. Most hiring in the communication industry takes places after graduation, she said.

“By and large for any Newhouse class that is graduating only about 1/4 to 1/3 of students have a job at the graduation,” Barnett said. “So it’s more of a norm not to have a job at the graduation, but the next six months following commencement is when we really see a lot of things are happening.”

Barnett added that communication fields that overlap with health care or government are growing.

Angela Petrucco, assistant dean of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management career services, said in an email that as of April 26, almost 60 percent of the school’s graduating class has a job offer in hand. Nineteen percent is in “an active interviewing cycle right now” and 7.4 percent have plans to attend graduate school, she added. The information is based on an 89 percent knowledge rate — meaning 89 percent of the graduating seniors have shared their post-graduation plans with the Career Center.

Meredith Tornabene, associate director of career counseling in the School of Information Studies, said the job market for iSchool graduates is good overall, but dependent on students’ interests and skills since iSchool degrees are flexible in many different industries.

Among 94 percent students from the Class of 2015 who responded to a survey, 50 percent of them said they received job offers before graduation. The placement rate for the Class of 2015 iSchool graduate was 95 percent, Tornabene said.

Overall, Tornabene said the job market for iSchool graduates is generally improving because of the overall economic recovery and a greater emphasis in technology across the industries.

Tornabene added that jobs within the information technology field are growing and there is still “a lack of talent to fill” the sector.

“I mean that has been true for quite some time now. It only seemingly keeps getting more focused,” Tornabene said.

She added that there is also a growth in the financial industry since any successful financial company is really a technology company.

In order to get a job, she said experience is “extremely important." Students who have completed internships have a higher likelihood of being able to secure full-time employment either more quickly or more in the exact role that they are looking for.

Brenda Hoefler, coordinator of career services and certification in the School of Education, said in an email that the state of the job market for 2016 School of Education graduates is “quite promising.”

“Many schools in the local, regional, and national level have teaching vacancies in all content areas, which gives our students the ability to explore many options,” Hoefler said.

Although the school does not have information about how many of Class of 2016 graduates have already gotten jobs, Hoefler said 50 percent of the graduates in the Class of 2015 reported they secured employment and 50 percent indicated they were attending graduate school within six months of graduation.

Based on the average over the last four years, Hoefler added 46 percent of undergraduates secured employment and 51 percent of undergraduates attended graduate school.

Sue Casson, director of career development and services at the College of Arts and Sciences, said the career center is in the process of compiling a data on the Class of 2016 graduates’ job prospect.

Barrett said career fields that are anticipated to continue growing include health care, veteran services, criminal justice and child welfare.

Representatives from the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Law could not be reached for comment.

For Class of 2014 graduates, 67 percent from VPA, 73.5 percent from College of Engineering and Computer Science and 96 percent from School of Architecture obtained full-time employment, according to the Career Services’ Outcome Report.

Student debt hits record high Student debt stands at about $946 billion as of the fourth quarter in 2015, according to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

Seven in 10 seniors who graduated

from public and nonprofit colleges in 2014 had student loan debt, with an average of $28,950 per borrower, according to the Institute for College Access and Success.

The institute also reported the average debt of SU graduates in the year 2014 was $34,584.

Don Dutkowsky, an economics professor in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, said the year-to-year change of student debt is in downward trend because households were desperate to spend.

Dutkowsky said even though the job market is relatively good for college graduates, rising student loan debt would delay postcollege plans like buying houses, and make putting funds away for savings challenging.

When asked about advice for those who have student debt, Dutkowsky said he would advise graduates to get their degree first and don’t try to do everything at once.

“Give yourself a chance. Give yourself time to establish your career (and) move forward in your career,” Dutkowsky said. "Your first job will not be your last job." ssugiyam@syr.edu | @SatoshiJournal

How DPS plans to prevent campus security, parking issues

Syracuse University's Department of Public Safety does not anticipate any issues at this year's commencement as long as the weather cooperates.

DPS Associate Chief John Sardino said security measures for the 2016 commencement ceremony are equivalent to that of last year’s and that he does not anticipate any issues. He added that the weather often plays a crucial role in terms of how the event unfolds.

“Things run a lot smoother if the weather is nice,” Sardino said. “If not, there is traffic congestion and delays.”

When the weather is bad, people try to drive closer to the Carrier Dome to avoid walking, Sardino said. In order to prevent traffic issues, he encourages attendees to be timely.

The doors will open at 7 a.m. on Sunday for the ceremony, which will start at 9:30 a.m. DPS officers arrive at the Dome at 6 a.m. the same day to do a sweep with the K-9 unit in anticipation of the gates opening. Sardino said this is done before all large scale events.

“We open early,” Sardino said. “We love

to see people get there as early as they can to avoid delays.”

DPS officers have been meeting to discuss commencement for well over a month, Sardino said.

Security measures, including bag checks, will be similar to those taken at athletic events held in the Dome.

But commencement differs from athletic events because it is one of the few occasions in which officers wear their dress uniform.

They will still be identifiable with their hats and badges though, Sardino said. About 33 officers will be involved with the ceremony.

The Syracuse Police Department will also be involved with security measures for commencement by joining the DPS officers inside the Dome, Sardino said.

“SPD is our partner inside the Dome for any significant event that takes place,” Sardino said.

DPS officers will also be present for individual college convocations on Saturday.

They will have private security and metal detector wands, Sardino said.

Parking and Transit Services is also part of the command and post structure, Sardino added.

“We communicate if there are any problems or delays,” Sardino said. “But it typically goes off without a hitch. Bad weather leads to more communication.”

Parking for the weekend is being coordinated by Parking and Transit Services and the Office of Special Events, said Alex Snow, events manager for the Office of Special Events, in an email.

“Many campus lots will be by pass only and I have been working with requests for accessibility as well as special guest with passes,” Snow said.

For Saturday’s convocations, campus parking garages and lots will be open

between 6 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., with a wheelchair accessible shuttle service from the University Avenue Garage to the Schine Student Center and Gate A of the Carrier Dome, according to the commencement website.

An additional shuttle service for those with limited mobility will run from Gate A of the Carrier Dome to receptions between 10:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturday, according to the website.

Free parking will be available during Sunday’s commencement ceremony as well, according to the website.

University Avenue Garage is open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. with a free shuttle service to Schine, according to the website. A free shuttle service will also run from Manley Field House to College Place from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wheelchair accessible buses, marked Call-A-Bus, will shuttle between the Manley North parking lot on Comstock Avenue and University Garage with direct route to and from Gate A of the Carrier Dome, according to the website. Attendants will be on hand to assist guests on and off the buses.

Free shuttles will run from the South Campus bus shelters throughout the weekend. tnwatson@syr.edu

Local businesses prepare for influx of visitors for ceremony

Big crowds and long lines are characteristic of game days in Syracuse, and local businesses are gearing up for their own final stretch: commencement weekend.

“It’s definitely the busiest weekend besides opening weekend,” said Jeremy Dann, assistant manager at Varsity Pizza.

"We go through so many football and basketball games up here, this is just like that but to a lesser degree.”

Syracuse businesses are preparing for commencement on May 15 by adding extra staff and stocking up on food and merchandise. Many businesses said it’s just like any other busy weekend, but one difference is that this year’s commencement is a week later than normal — the ceremony usually falls on Mother’s Day. Bill Nester, manager at Manny's, said he loves when commencement falls on Mother's Day. “It’s like an extra gift for mom, to see their kid graduate on Mother’s Day … but it’s just the way the calendar year worked out this year,” Nester, who has worked at Manny’s for 33 years, said.

Steven Papazides, manager at Acropolis Pizza House, said Acropolis had to reschedule employees because they thought commencement would be on Mother’s Day this year.

David Heymann, general manager of the Sheraton University Hotel & Conference Center, said the hotel normally hosts a joint commencement and Mother’s Day brunch, but this year they will be holding two separate brunches.

Despite commencement not falling on a holiday, businesses are still preparing for a busy weekend. The Sheraton, theoretically, would have been sold out for months, Heymann said, but the process of reserving a room is a lottery system.

Dann said Varsity goes through about 100 pizzas by 2 p.m. on a normal business day. But during commencement weekend, Varsity might make up to 200 pizzas.

At Faegan’s Cafe & Pub, Supervisor Bree Adams said they double their staff, usually beginning the week before commencement.

Josiah Richetti, general manager at Chipotle Mexican Grill, and Lisa Ramirez, general manager at M Street Pizza, said they aren’t doing anything particularly different from normal preparation for a busy day.

Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks and Crowne Plaza Syracuse could not be reached for comment.

Jarred Vryhof, a cook at Funk ’n Waffles on South Crouse Avenue, said he started working during one commencement weekend and there were lines out the door. While Funk ’n Waffles probably won’t be scheduling extra staff, Vryhof said they are working on speeding up the line.

“But we have cut our times down like quite a bit from then, so hopefully we will be able to get it sped up and get people in here

While many businesses said they are maintaining regular prices and aren’t holding any special promotions, Erik Hicks, manager at J Michael Shoes, said they are holding a storewide 20 percent off sale.

Ramirez said M Street Pizza is offering $12.99 20-inch pizzas.

Heymann said the Sheraton will be offering a small reception and an arrival gift for guests, and will be providing shuttles to the Carrier Dome for commencement.

Nester said Manny’s is bringing in spring merchandise, such as tank tops, shorts and alumni gear.

Papazides said commencement often brings back alumni to Acropolis, which is fun for him. They always ask for the pizza.

“They’ll live their lives for five years or so, then all of a sudden they’ll remember ‘Hey, why don’t we go see a good basketball game or a good football game?'” Papazides said.

“And then they come in and it’s like ‘Oh…’ You feel like you’re in the old neighborhood, you know what I mean.”

For the students graduating and leaving Syracuse University, it’s a bittersweet goodbye. Tiffany Bloomingdale, co-manager at Cafe Kubal, said some of their regulars stop by for coffee as they head for their next destination.

“I’m thinking about last year. We had a couple people who, you know, they were heading to the airport or they were heading out of town, and they came in for coffee,” Bloomingdale said. “On their last (day), you know? It was really sweet.” hykim100@syr.edu

Students should be understanding of commencement conflicts The opportunity for Syracuse University students to dually enroll across its various schools and colleges is often a beneficial one. But graduating seniors may be forced to compromise the recognition of their academic strides due to conflicting commencement ceremony times.

For this year’s commencement weekend, the convocations of the School of Architecture, College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the College of Arts and Sciences all occur at the same time during the morning of May 14. There is also overlap among the ceremonies of the School of Information Studies, the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the School of Education at noon.

Though some students may have concerns

about the tough decision of figuring out which convocation to attend, they should keep in mind that months of planning by SU faculty, staff and administrators are invested in ensuring commencement runs smoothly. Any problems that dual students run into on this big weekend are incidental and it should be taken into consideration that there are thousands of schedules to accommodate when convocation timetables are drawn up.

While SU conducting multiple convocations at once may not be ideal for dually enrolled students, staggering the ceremonies across commencement weekend would not be feasible either. If graduation were to be spread across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it would further complicate the travel plans of students and family members.

The number of convocation ceremonies happening as part of this commencement weekend

There will arguably be fewer students struggling over whether to don their cap and gown for their engineering degree or business degree come Saturday morning than for other paired majors. And if anything, commencement planners should look into setting the College of Arts and Sciences’ convocation apart in the coming years, as the school is likely home to more dual majors than any other college.

Even if none of the convocations conflicted on paper, students should have a holistic understanding that they are not the only stakeholders in the ceremony scheduling process. As it stands, SU faculty and staff members, chairs on the planning committee, students, speakers and family members already have to make some form of sacrifice in order to attend commencement festivities.

Heading into future years, commencement planners can only hope to minimize overlap at best and dually enrolled students will have to divide their time wisely. Graduating classes are made up of thousands of students, and when planning events on this large a scale, it is simply not feasible for everyone to be satisfied.

he Syracuse University community has taken strides toward becoming a more feminist campus this past school year in the forms of Slut Walks and inspiring viral YouTube videos. Here are the top five moments that reinforce how much progress SU has made in regard to women’s empowerment.

LadyFest continued to provide a safe, feminist space in Syracuse

The Westcott Community Center hosted the second annual LadyFest in Syracuse in September. Like the first Ladyfest in 2014, Syracuse-based artist Cara Luddy organized the festival to celebrate women in the local community. Part of its focus is to create a safe place for survivors of sexual assault to share their experiences and connect with other women on a personal level.

Aside from creating a welcoming atmosphere, there were a number of booths set up by vendors that were selling feminist books, artwork, embroidery and even vagina-shaped jewelry.

These one-of-a-kind goods sold at the festival, paired with spoken word performances and live music from local bands including The Nudes and Malvinas, made this event one to remember.

Joe Biden visited SU as a part of the It’s On Us campaign tour

SU College of Law alumnus and Vice President Joe Biden made a trip back to his old stomping grounds in November with a mission similar to the organizers of the Syracuse Slut Walk. Biden came to speak for the “It’s On Us” campaign, an initiative that was launched by President Barack Obama in 2014 in an effort to put an end to sexual assault and relationship violence on college campuses.

Students began lining up hours in advance to hear Biden address this prevalent issue. His visit proved to be a success, as he sparked a long overdue

conversation and demanded student’s attention on this matter, which is necessary to reverse the hush-hush culture surrounding sexual assault.

One in five college-aged women will be a victim of sexual assault or attempted sexual assault, according to data from It’s On Us. Because of this alarming statistic, it’s important to begin the movement on college campuses.

Universities are where America’s youth learn to come into their own and form ideas about critical issues. Initiatives like It’s on Us are essential if we hope to create any significant change within society in regard to fostering respect for women’s bodies and sexual decisions.

Among other things, SU is known for its basketball, its Orange pride and its greek life. Because of this, no one expected an SU student to speak so publicly against any of these.

In January, senior public relations major Alex Purdy shed some light on her less-thansisterly experience with greek life in a viral YouTube video. SU students were then able to hear firsthand the negative impacts that the greek community can have on women and what sororities should strive to be instead.

While the greek community can be a welcoming one for many, no young woman should be subjected to the kind of treatment described in Purdy’s video. Membership in sororities should be built on respect and close bonds, not impossible standards and degrading comments.

Sororities are meant to provide its members with a home away from home and a sisterhood that should endure throughout college and beyond. But Purdy’s message makes it clear that some houses on campus are lacking in this respect and not practicing the feminist values they preach.

What SU students should take away from Purdy’s experience is that members within a sorority should strive to empower one another and be more inclusive, not destroy their sisters’ self-esteem. All in all, having a “FUPA,” as mentioned in Purdy’s video, is 10 times better than having an irreparable personality.

SU women’s basketball team received support from students in Schine Student Center

For the first time in the program’s history, the women’s basketball team made it all the way to the NCAA Final Four tournament and then the championship game against the University of Connecticut in April.

Though the team didn’t beat UConn, advancing to the Final Four was no easy feat. Rallying around the women’s basketball team, about 45 students gathered in the Schine Dining Center to watch that Final Four game and celebrate the team’s historic victory.

As an institution that takes athletics seriously, it’s important that the SU student body extends its Orange pride to all of its teams. Those that showed unconditional support for teams of both genders truly set an example for other students to follow.

Every SU athlete dedicates an enormous amount of time out of their schedules for the sake of their sport and that should be com-

mended — win or lose, man or woman.

First Slut Walk organized at SU

Students led the first ever Slut Walk in late April on the SU campus. In an effort to combat sexual assault and set the tone for a more inclusive campus, freshman Keturah Raymond and sophomore Jordan McGriff led the demonstration around campus and caught the attention of many students. Bold signs were carried, chants were sung loudly and it was a good day for feminism at SU. “I think the moment it all hit me was when we started marching and I turned around and saw a huge crowd of people chanting and waving posters,” Raymond said. “That was kind of that defining ‘wow’ moment that people really believed in this movement and that there needs to be a change.”

As a college campus, it’s important for students to be the example for their peers when it comes to approaching important feminist topics.

It took a great deal of collaboration with administration in order to bring the “SlutWalk” movement to campus. With signs like “My vagina. My Choice.” and “#StillNotAskingForIt,” students made it clear that slut-shaming is not OK on in the university community. eìeìe

What these events have in common is that they all aimed to improve the lives of women in the university community. And it’s important for students to further their support for these campaigns and recognize the value of pushing these boundaries.

Making SU a more thoroughly feminist environment is ultimately a community effort and these five events were visible, engaging ways to do just that.

The best apps to help college graduates land jobs, save money

A

s the class of 2016 prepares to enter a job market that relies heavily on technology, graduating students should pay special attention to the online app world in their quest to make money and find jobs.

LinkedIn Student

Though the widely popular LinkedIn is nothing new, its latest effort to launch a more specialized app for students is certainly noteworthy.

The aptly named LinkedIn Student, which was released mid-April, goes a step beyond the primary LinkedIn platform and offers several features that could be a real boon to college graduates and students alike.

Student users can explore job positions based on education, see companies that hired graduates from SU and get their foot in the door by connecting with alumni who have similar interests and skill sets.

For those who may not have networks built up yet, this is a valuable asset: as of 2014, about 94 percent of human resource professionals used LinkedIn to recruit employees, according to USA Today College.

IT’S NOT PERSONAL, IT’S BUSINESS Already use LinkedIn? The information is transferable between LinkedIn Student and the parent app, so there is no reason not to add this to your arsenal when planning your future. This app does a great job of helping users branch out to get and stay on the right track to employment.

Stash

This app won’t get you any jobs or networking opportunities, but it may earn you some extra spending cash. Though stock investment apps are quite numerous, Stash, which was released in October 2015, stands out among the rest due to its lower cost and user friendliness.

Stash boasts that customers can begin investing with as little as $5. Because the low entry fee is due to many people splitting one share, the payouts won’t be anything significant, but there’s definitely less of a risk than going all-in on

SU student advocates for better public transit When I moved to Syracuse, I was shocked by how segregated the university community is with relation to the rest of the city. This lack of knowledge of the Syracuse area was a product of limited transportation options that connect the campus community with the rest of the city.

Many students want to volunteer and connect with the city but have no means of transportation to do so. The lack of efficient public transportation makes coordinating a full time academic course load, a job and volunteering or interning opportunities very difficult.

Up until spring semester 2014, the Connective Corridor had a regular schedule that stopped close to the Near West Side almost every thirty minutes. Many organizations are located in this area, which made volunteering with different centers manageable. But, the Connective Corridor now stops only every two or three hours, making coordinating volunteer time extremely conflicting and difficult. The Shaw Center on campus has been able to alleviate some of this transportation problem, but only during the weekdays.

There is currently no viable option for weekend transportation, which is when most students are free to volunteer. Not only are the organizations in the area directly affected by this cut, but the students interested in volunteer work now have a much more limited way of connecting with the city. Eliminating effective transportation methods not

just affects the productivity of the organizations, but it also limits the extra-curricular growth experiences students have.

Volunteer experiences are not just beneficial to the organizations, but to students as well. Enriching opportunities feed into the student’s course material and enhance an individual’s college experience.

Ambitious students who desire to perform well in classes, maintain a job, and volunteer, should be able to do so. Appetite for knowledge and experiences should be rewarded.

This is why students should demand a more efficient public transportation system from the university.

Education students wishing to volunteer in after school programs, anthropology majors wanting to learn more about the Syracuse refugee community, VPA undergraduates looking to develop their artistic skills by collaborating with different centers or organizations. These are just some examples of students who would benefit from a better transportation system. And in turn, the local organizations will profit. Both, the city and the university community working together to improve the living conditions of the city at large.

There is a heavy focus on staff support and communication to help young investors learn the tricks of the trade. This presents an accessible starting point for any aspiring stock market connoisseur.

Apart from being a learning tool, this app is a feasible way to make some extra pocket change.

When you’re out on your own, any little bit helps and this app can provide a simple way to earn money.

Glassdoor

Students are used to RateMyProfessor, so Glassdoor should be an easy transition as a similar service for the professional world.

Glassdoor is an app that gives insight into what it’s really like to work for a company. The anonymous review app is fueled by employees who contribute all sorts of interesting insider knowledge on their respective workplace environments.

The service offers an overview of the interview process, CEO approval ratings and salary reports to name a few and these are all helpful for college graduates to make the

right employment decision. The app also broadens the scope of available opportunities in that it doubles as a job search engine.

This upper hand can alleviate a lot of the anxiety that comes with applying for a new job. Knowing what the interviewer is likely to ask you basically makes you a pro before setting foot inside. This valuable tool can help you narrow down your dream job in no time.

And in the end, the peace of mind is worth the free download to check out a company before signing on.

Weebly

This final service is more of a website than an app, but it does offer a mobile platform to those interested. Weebly presents both those looking for jobs with the opportunity to create their own website from their phone. No one can argue the benefits of having your own personal website — it provides a readily accessible portfolio for employers to view.

The company offers a free package which includes hosting services, unlimited pages, and

chat and email support. But more sophisticated packages, like the starter package for $8 monthly and the pro package for $12 monthly, are available for those who want to showcase a more advanced website.

The service gives you a way to stand out and present yourself professionally with a small amount of effort. Weebly’s accessible platform can lead to a better financial future by helping graduates seal the deal on job offers.

The Bottom Line

So graduating seniors, in the sea of apps out there designed to help you get and succeed at jobs, LinkedIn Student and Glassdoor will help you find your jobs and networks, while Stash and Weebly will help you make the most of your money while on your own.

And though this list is far from complete, it’s a starting point for those looking to enter the workforce with technology by their side.

TOP 10 MOMENTS The most important news stories from the past 4 years

Here’s a roundup of the biggest stories at Syracuse University in the last four years — from when the class of 2016 started freshman year in 2012 to now.

1. The Dalai Lama comes to SU – Oct. 2012 The Dalai Lama visited SU in the fall of 2012 for a two-day peace forum that included discussion panels and a concert in the Carrier Dome with more than 20 musical acts.

While here, the Dalai Lama sat on two panels in Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center. One focused on education and technology, while the other focused on democracy and peace in the Middle East.

A handful of students — mostly from China — protested the Dalai Lama’s presence at SU, claiming the Dalai Lama is responsible for violence in Tibet and advocating for Tibetan independence from China.

The symposium ended with the One World Concert, which featured artists including the Dave Matthews Band, Natasha Bedingfield and Nas.

2. Nancy Cantor steps down – Oct. 2012 In an email to the student body, Nancy Cantor announced in October 2012 she was stepping down as chancellor of SU after her contract expired in 2014.

As chancellor, Cantor invested money into the city of Syracuse, increased enrollment and advocated for diversity, actions that brought mixed reactions from students, faculty and staff. Her tenure was also marked by controversy — particularly after The Daily Orange published a series of articles about Cantor’s reputation for vilifying critics and stifling free speech.

Cantor is now the chancellor of Rutgers University– Newark.

3. Bernie Fine not charged – Nov. 2012 After a yearlong investigation, the U.S. Attorney’s Office decided in November 2012 that it would not press charges against former associate men’s basketball coach Bernie Fine over allegations of child molestation.

The Syracuse Police Department started investigating Fine in 2011 after two former ball boys, Bobby Davis and Mike Lang, accused Fine of molesting them. Fine was fired but denied all wrongdoing. SU men’s basketball head coach Jim Boeheim said at the time that Davis and Lang were liars out to get money.

Fine’s wife, Laurie, filed a libel lawsuit against ESPN in May 2012, claiming that the network ruined her reputation by falsely reporting that she knew her husband was sexually abusing ball boys and did nothing about it. A judge dismissed the case in March of this year.

4. Former SA President Allie Curtis almost gets impeached – Early April 2012 In 2013, SU's Student Association put former President Allie Curtis up for impeachment, but ultimately decided by a 31-20 vote that she should keep her job.

Cabinet members called for Curtis’ impeachment after they discovered that SA’s director of public relations at the time, Colin Crowley, was not enrolled at SU and continued in that position anyway. The assembly members said Curtis knew about Crowley and withheld that information from the rest of SA. After graduating, Curtis, who has extensive experience with beauty pageants, was crowned Miss Rhode Island. She did not make it into the top 15 at the Miss America pageant.

5. Kent Syverud named chancellor – Named: Sept.

2013. Inaguration: April 2014 Kent Syverud was named SU’s chancellor in September 2013 to replace Nancy Cantor.

In his inauguration speech, Syverud laid out his main goals for the university: enhance undergraduate education and experience, empower research and

5 become the best place for veterans to gain a college education.

To achieve these goals, the SU administration under Syverud has undertaken a massive initiative — a “roadmap” for the university — called Fast Forward. Now, two years after Syverud was inaugurated, SU has moved toward meeting Syverud’s goals involving research and veterans. But some are expressing concern about Fast Forward altogether.

6. Advocacy Center closes, THE General Body protests – Closing: May 2014. Protests: Nov. 2014 After Syverud announced at the end of May 2014 that sexual assault resources on campus would be restructured, shutting down the Advocacy Center and moving its services to other offices on campus, there was public outcry.

Later that year, THE General Body, a coalition of more than 50 student organizations, staged an 18-day sit-in inside Crouse-Hinds Hall to protest cuts to the POSSE program and how Syverud went about the shutting down of the Advocacy Center, among other issues. Their grievances and demands culminated into 45-page document, which THE General Body gave to the administration during the sit-in.

One year after the sit-in, the administration told The Daily Orange it addressed most of THE General Body’s demands. However, in a letter to the editor to The Daily Orange, THE General Body said that not much has changed.

7. Hanna Strong video sparks outrage – Sept. 2014 Hanna Strong, then a senior on SU’s women’s soccer team, was videotaped in September 2014 calling another person a “f*ggot-a** n*gger.” The video sparked outrage on campus and Strong eventually apologized, saying the video in no way “accurately represents who I am or the person I strive to become.”

Strong reportedly lost her job as a substitute teacher in January because officials in the Springfield Public School district, which is in Massachusetts, became aware of the video.

8. SU put on lockdown – Oct. 2015 SU was put on lockdown for nearly two hours on October 14, 2015 after law enforcement started to look for a possible shooter nearby. Police were looking for two men — believed to be armed — who were suspects in a homicide on Hope Avenue, which is about 2 miles away from the SU campus. The shooting left 15-year-old Zavion Escobar dead and another 17-year-old boy injured.

Two months later, SPD arrested Keary Moore, 21, for the murder of Escobar.

9. Joe Biden comes to SU – Nov. 2015 Vice President Joe Biden came to SU in November 2015 to speak about sexual assault prevention as part of the White House’s “It’s On Us” campaign. Biden, who is an SU College of Law alumnus, spoke to a full crowd in Goldstein Auditorium inside Schine.

At the same time, students rallied near Hendricks Chapel to bring attention to the protests at the University of Missouri, which focused on racial issues on college campuses.

10. National Veterans Resource Complex proposed – Nov. 2015 Under Syverud, who promised in his inauguration speech to prioritize veteran issues, SU proposed the creation of a National Veterans Resource Complex that would serve as a “hub” for all services relating to veterans on campus.

The complex would include a veteran-focused medical school. The school would train doctors and health care professionals to work at the Veterans Administration hospitals across the country. In return, students would go to the school tuition-free.

The project won state funding in December 2015, which moved the project forward. Now, university officials are deciding which architecture firm will design and build the complex. rsandler@syr.edu

Campaign seeks donations from graduating students

During the Syracuse University commencement ceremony on May 15, hundreds of students will be wearing an orange, white and silver cord, which is a token of appreciation on behalf of the university to thank graduating students for giving back.

Every year since 2010, the senior class at SU has been encouraged to leave its mark by participating in the Class Act Campaign. Through the campaign, graduating students make a donation that is equivalent to their class year.

This year it’s $20.16, said Megan Andolina, assistant director of lifelong learning in the Office of Alumni Engagement.

Andolina is working on the Class Act Campaign in coordination with Sarah Hope, an assistant director in the Office of Donor Relations.

“It’s purpose basically is to kind of to get you ready to be an alum, and get you engaged before you leave on why philanthropy is important and what impact it has

convocations School of Education The School of Education will hold its convocation ceremony on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Manley Field House. David Essel, a motivational speaker and author, will be the speaker, according to the release. A reception following the ceremony will take place at 2:15 p.m. in a tent at Manley.

College of Arts and Sciences The College of Arts and Sciences will hold its undergraduate ceremony on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Dome and its graduate ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Crouse College’s Setnor Auditorium. Kevin Bell, president and CEO of Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoological Society, will speak, per the release. Following the ceremony, undergraduate receptions will be held at 11:30 a.m. in various locations on the SU campus for all of the college’s different departments and a graduate reception will be held at 3 p.m. in Strasser Commons, on the second floor of Eggers Hall.

School of Information Studies The iSchool will hold its undergraduate ceremony on Saturday at noon in Goldstein Auditorium in Schine and its graduate ceremony on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the same

Newhouse, who Branham and Rubin describe as down-to-earth as a billionaire gets, will give his address at the joint ceremony for SU and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry on May 15. It will be the latest stamp left at SU by Newhouse, who has spent much of his life supporting the Newhouse School, originally named after his father, Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr. Newhouse — whose wife, Susan, died in August — said his speech will focus on a message of loss and what that has taught him.

“It’s quite personal,” he said. “But despite what those words imply, it’s going to be a message to everybody about the turns life can take and how to beat those turns.”

It’s a speech he’s worked tirelessly to complete. When he met with Rubin in midApril, Newhouse was already on his 13th draft of the speech, Rubin said.

This year’s campaign has been different in that there was no designated committee promoting the campaign to students, rather it has been driven by individual groups of students across the schools and colleges. This is also the first year the law school has participated, Hope said.

Student donations have increased every year since the initiative began, Hope said.

Last year 22.6 percent of the graduating class participated in the Class Act Campaign, raising close to $17,000. As of April 28 of this year, the Class of 2016 has had 16 percent participation and raised about $12,500. She added that all gifts will continue to be counted through the end of the fiscal year, which is June 30.

When students graduate this year they

will be joining a network of more than 250,000 living alumni, Andolina said.

“The four years that you are here at SU kind of change your life and are so important at putting you on a certain path that we really just want SU to remain in their lives and make them feel like they’re still connected,” Andolina said.

From a philanthropic point of view, maintaining alumni relations is important because the cost of tuition only covers 85 percent of university operating cost, Andolina said. To make up the other 15 percent, SU relies on donors, and the majority of them are alumni.

Figures for this year’s university endowment have yet to be released publicly, but for the last three consecutive years’ figures have surpassed $1 billion, according to the SU Giving website.

Maintaining alumni relations is also important because of the resources that they can provide for students, said Susan Ballard, the associate vice president of alumni engagement.

“Our alumni are the living legacy of the university, if you will, and they have the stories that create the fabric that make Syracuse University what it is today.” Ballard said. “There is a reason that we continue to thrive and they continue to give back in many ways.”

Ballard said the Office of Alumni Engagement is in contact daily with alumni about whether they are interested in hosting something in their area, learning more about a certain research project or they are looking for information as it relates to current happening on campus.

Student Association Vice President Jane Hong, a graduating senior broadcast and digital journalism major who is on the Student Philanthropy Council, said after graduation she will be staying in touch with the university and giving back however she can.

“We have really, really incredible students who wouldn’t be able to be here unless they had those gifts that were given by alumni,” Hong said.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science will hold its convocation ceremony on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in Manley Field House. Edward Cettina, a Class of 1987 SU alumnus and chief operating officer of the Americas for AECOM’s building construction business, will be the speaker, according to the release. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held at 11:30 a.m. in a tent at Manley.

VPA’s convocation for undergraduates and graduates will take place in the Dome on Saturday at 7 p.m. Alan Dye, Apple’s vice president of user interface design, will be the ceremony’s speaker, per the release.

Following the convocation, there will be a reception at a tent on the Quad at 8:30 p.m.

Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs

David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics

Maxwell will host its ceremony for master’s and doctoral degree candidates at 2 p.m. in Crouse College’s Setnor Auditorium on Friday. The convocation speaker will be Catherine Bertini, a professor in the public administration and international affairs programs at Maxwell and a distinguished fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, according to the release. The student speaker will be Mirjakhon Turdiev, who focused on inclusion and empowerment of people with disabilities in his executive M.P.A. program. After the ceremony

That’s also likely in part because Newhouse doesn’t have much practice with speeches. Typically, he doesn’t like giving them, Rubin said, adding that Newhouse is “a private guy” who generally keeps to himself and prefers to stay out of the way of others.

Rubin said “you would absolutely never know” that Newhouse is a billionaire simply by talking to him.

“You can’t imagine a less pretentious billionaire than Donald,” Rubin said. “... He’s completely without airs.”

Rubin recalled instances while he was dean of the Newhouse School when Donald would call him during the work day. Each time, Donald would ask Rubin whether he was bothering him and if it was a good time to call.

“And I would say, ‘Donald, what are you kidding me? Bothering me? Just tell me what you want,’” Rubin said.

That aspect of Newhouse’s personality has also shown in the level of influence he’s had over the Newhouse School, Rubin and Branham said. Over the years, Newhouse has consistently donated large sums of money to the school, but has never attempt-

ed to control the direction of the school.

One project Newhouse helped significantly fund was the construction of Newhouse III, which was dedicated in 2007.

When Rubin proposed wrapping the side of the building with the First Amendment, Newhouse was all for it. When Rubin asked Newhouse for his thoughts on the mural just inside the main entrance of the building, Newhouse supported it. And when the Newhouse School had the opportunity to get United States Chief Justice John Roberts to be the dedication speaker, Newhouse made it happen.

Newhouse’s donations have also helped support Newhouse facilities and scholarships, as well as the school’s endowed chair and its doctoral program, Branham said.

Often times over the years, Newhouse, who lives in New York City, has visited the Syracuse area because Advance Publications owns Syracuse Media Group. When he’s visited, he has sometimes discretely stopped by the Newhouse School, “just to check the place out,” Branham said.

He did the same thing while Newhouse III was being constructed. Newhouse would

He simply would want to see the school that bears his name and his father’s name.

It’s a school that is kept in high regard in journalism circles, something that Newhouse said gives him “tremendous pride” before adding that he takes “no credit.”

“Credit goes to David Rubin and now Dean Branham,” he said. “It’s been fascinating to work with them. They’re wonderful.

They’re strategic thinkers.”

Inside Rubin’s office in Newhouse III sits a photo of himself, Donald and Donald’s late wife, Susan. Two buildings over, in Branham’s office in Newhouse I, sits another photo of Donald at the Newhouse School’s 50th anniversary celebration in New York City.

And even if Newhouse himself won’t take credit for the school’s success, both Branham and Rubin are quick to say he deserves a sizeable chunk of it.

University Scholar creates graphic depiction of 18th century novel

A

lice Blank settled back in her chair at Café Kubal and stared intently at the final product of her capstone project, a comic rendition of the first chapter of The Castle of Otranto.

She has brought the 18th century gothic novel to life. The pages are filled with intricate lines, creating detailed scenes.

One page depicts a run-down castle and a multitude of stalagmites and stalactites. Blank gazed unblinkingly down at what she had made.

“Oh yeah, that one took me a while, a long while,” the Syracuse University senior art and English and textual studies major said.

Blank was recently named as a Syracuse University Scholar, the most prestigious award and undergraduate student can be granted. “The selection of University Scholars is based on students’ academic achievements, creative work, co-curricular activities, and contributions to the community,” according to the College of Arts and Sciences website.

Blank’s achievements range from academic to social. She has received scholarships, has the highest GPA in the English department and wrote the best undergraduate art history paper. She was the editor-in-chief of OutCrowd magazine, has had her works published in Harmonious Hearts anthology, served as the president of WHAT Theatre and was the keynote speaker at the Rainbow Banquet, an event put on by the SU LGBT

Resource Center.

While the comic took months and months to complete, Alice never saw it as tedious or as work; she finds relaxation in drawing comics.

In fact, she said she was mainly scared of not finishing the project because without her comic book, she wouldn’t have a physical representation of the time she spent at Syracuse.

Olivia Monko, Blank’s girlfriend of five months and a junior studying television, radio and film at SU, said the two of them got together around the time Blank began working on the project. She was enamored with watching Blank create it.

“It’s been really interesting for me to see the process. She is so talented, so intelligent and so humble,” Monko said. “She would just sit and see blank page 18

Commencement traditions evolve, fade away over time

As the school year comes to a close, students are rushing to cross off items on their year-end bucket lists.

Whether it’s signing the walls at Chuck’s or climbing the water tower, students have put aside time to accomplish these feats.

These small traditions are well known to current students, but only time will tell if they will continue on in Orange-lore. Though some traditions are come-and-go,

there are some that seem to last forever. Here’s a look back at some traditions that haven’t stood the test of time.

Greek mythology aids students in final exams A group of students groggily stumble into Carnegie Library, barely glancing at the 12-foot statue in front of them.

The statue “Diana” with her dog was donated to Syracuse University in 1932 by its creator, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Cast in bronze, the statue has always carried a bit of controversy, beauty and luck.

The legend states that if “a student rubs the dog’s paw and says a brief prayer, they will be ensured success in any quiz or examination,” according to SU Archives.

In Greek mythology Diana represents the huntress, and in this depiction she has just released an arrow into flight while both she and her dog watch its ascent into the air.

The dog’s paw is a shiny gold color after years of students’ hands have rubbed away layers, asking thestatue to bring them luck. In recent years, the tradition

has fallen out of university-lore.

A small metal ring surrounds the statue, dissuading students from touching it.

The statue was recently relocated to Carnegie after years of residence in Bird Library.

During its stint in Bird, Lisa Moeckel, current associate dean of SU libraries, sent this email to staff members in 2005: “Please note that the University Art Collection staff have reminded us that touching the Diana statue (specifically, rubbing the dog’s paw) is not permitted.

While I know that tour givers may like to tell this story about rubbing the paw for luck we should not suggest or promote this study…”

Jessica Rice, a Carnegie Library technician, said in her two years of working in that role she has never seen a student rub the statue. She admitted to telling people the tale if approached by prospective students and families for an informal tour of the space.

in Syracuse for 17 years, serving quality Polish food. Located in a brick and red clapboard house typical of residential Syracuse architecture, the atmosphere is cozy and homely, and provides comfort food and a family ambiance.

The 317 This restaurant doesn’t offer a wide selection of meals, but the options are borderline gourmet: pistachio-crusted salmon, roast duck and a chicken roulade with puff pastry, mushrooms, artichokes, mozzarella and

roast potatoes grace the menu. In line with its name, the restaurant is located at 317 Montgomery Street.

Mizu Japanese Steakhouse This Asian restaurant offers hibachi as well as many other Japanese favorites like sushi, tempura, udon and teriyaki. SU Brass Ensemble provides soundtrack to commencement

The image of a Syracuse University commencement weekend is something everyone can picture. Orange and blue coat the Carrier Dome filled with thousands of graduates.

Family and friends gather to see the end result of four years of hard work. Floating high above the packed room are the sounds of the SU Brass Ensemble (SUBE).

The award-winning band is the soundtrack to commencement. Under the direction of Dr. James T. Spencer, the SUBE has been playing the ceremony since the 1990s. The ensemble is composed of SU students, faculty and staff, State University of New York Upstate Medical University faculty and staff and other upstate New York musicians.

A permanent ensemble-in-residence through the College of Arts and Sciences and Hendricks Chapel, the band will play during both the convocation of the College of Arts and Sciences on Saturday and the university’s 162nd commencement on Sunday.

The SUBE has no senior students playing this year. But when there have been seniors in the band in years prior, they traditionally have decided to spend the ceremony with the ensemble. Spencer said their time with the ensemble is usually too meaningful to pass up one last performance. He added that the band’s proximity to the stage provides “the best seat in the house.”

The obvious assumption would be that the SUBE plays “Pomp and Circumstance” while everyone marches in. While that is true for the chancellor’s entrance, its performance is

much more than that. The band is responsible for providing music for the procession, recession and even some moments during the ceremony. With thousands of students and faculty involved, Spencer said his ensemble has to be prepared to play for a long time.

“It takes quite a bit of choreography to set up,” he said. “It’s a lot of music, close to two hours, really.”

Spencer said the band fills those two hours with a lot of dignified-sounding fanfare pieces. This year, the list includes William Walton’s “Crown Imperial,” the march from Gustav Holst’s “A Moorside Suite,” Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles,” Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and the fanfare prelude from “La Peri” by Paul Dukas.

These pieces are challenging to play, so the ensemble has been practicing for the past month in preparation. Its members gather every Monday in Hendricks Chapel, and Spencer said it’s this dedication that helps the SUBE play at such a high level.

“It’s rare that we’ll have one player missing for a rehearsal,” Spencer said. “And you’d have to be in the hospital to miss a performance.”

Aside from graduation, the SUBE plays about 16 performances each year. Most notably, its “Holidays at Hendricks” concert is broadcast on local television.

Spencer said his role as director of the SUBE, a position he’s held since 1987, is the perfect release from his scientific duties.

“Not only do we have great people, but they’re also fine players,” Spencer said. “What could be better than making music together?” jtbloss@syr.edu

Which clothes can graduate with you, what should stay at SU

C

ollege is a weird time for personal fashion because we’re surrounded by people our own age. We can’t judge each other too much for wearing leggings and Ugg boots to 8 a.m. classes or wearing gym clothes when we are just planning on getting Starbucks and then hibernating in Bird Library all day.

The real world seems much scarier.

There are bosses and co-workers to impress and bars that aren’t covered in spilled drinks and fog machines (looking at you, DJ’s). If you’ve been wearing the same clothes since freshman year, graduation is the perfect time for a wardrobe upgrade. Follow this guide to make the most of your post-grad closet: 1. Invest in higher quality.

This doesn’t mean you need a designer wardrobe, but now is a good time to start buying clothes that will last longer than a few months. In college, it is convenient to stop by Forever 21 or H&M for tops and “frat shoes” that you know are going to get torn apart sooner or later. After graduation, hopefully your outings will be a bit classier and warrant some nicer threads.

2. Leggings aren’t pants — in the real world that is.

It is totally acceptable to kick back in leggings and t-shirts throughout most of your college career, but your new actual career may not look so fondly on the beloved Netflix-binge-chic style. For casual settings, black jeans elevate any look. For work settings, a pair of tailored skinny pants (like J. Crew’s Martie pant) will do the trick.

3. Say bye to the backpack Now is your chance to pick out a chic new bag to hold your everyday work essentials.

Go for something simple that will go with every outfit, and make sure it is roomy and strong enough to hold everything.

4. Find the perfect flats.

Your awesome first-day-of-work outfit may look gorgeous, but you don’t want to be stumbling around in heels, especially when you’re just getting used to a new environment and aren’t sure what is expected of you. You may have to do lots of walking or even run an errand or two, and you don’t want to be stuck with painful feet. Shop for a pair of versatile ballet flats or loafers that will go with your look and last you all day long.

5. Toss the costumes.

Themed parties may have been your favorite thing at ’Cuse, but chances are you won’t use Hawaiian leis, alien costumes or that under-the-sea ensemble post-graduation. Unless of course, you come back to visit, in which case you’re never too old to throw on your old costumes and party with the little kiddies.

Since it was before his headlining stint on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” premiered on NBC, Meyers was most well-known for his “Weekend Update” segment on “Saturday Night Live.”

Not only did he appear on the show, but he had also been a head writer for six years.

The show was University Union’s first performing arts event of the year and had students lining up in Schine Student Center hours before the show. The sketch comedy duo brought a night filled with impressions, anecdotal jokes about their college days and even some jabs at the Syracuse community.

1. Calvin Harris and Childish Gambino SEPT. 9, 2012 Juice Jam 2012 featured electronic dance music DJ Calvin Harris and rapper Childish Gambino. The concert was opened by hiphop group The Dean’s List and sold out its capacity of 8,500 tickets. Gambino rapped through his hits including “Fire Fly” and “Freaks and Geeks” with his touring band playing various instruments behind him.

After his 2015 show, he became the leader of most performances by a single artist in the Dome. The drinks that define an SU student’s college experience

There are a lot of alcoholic beverages you’ll consume in college; from boxed wines to cheap 30-racks to a sugary bottle of vodka. We all go back and forth when it comes to our drink of choice. But these are six of the beverages that have held steady in shaping our memories – or lack thereof – of our time at Syracuse.

Jungle Juice In all honesty, you never really know what you’re getting into when you drink Jungle Juice. Nobody really likes it, but everyone is familiar with it. This is a college staple you’ll find at your first basement party freshman year and in your last day-drink of senior year.

Seniors plant ivy in one last clingy effort A silver shovel is plunged deep into the earth. The Hall of Languages looms high above as seniors from the class of 1873 place an ivy plant in the ground.

The ivy oration was given by a member of that graduating class.

“We plant here what will cling like our memories to these old walls, always beautifying them, and clinging closer as storm or time would weaken their grip and further will be a memory of us long after we move off the stage,” said an unnamed orator, according to a 1873 article in the University Herald.

The tradition of ivy planting during commencement weekend was started by Syracuse University’s 1873 graduating class, and was celebrated well into the 20th century before dying out.

The ceremony changed over the years, but two things remained consistent: planting an ivy plant, normally on the west side of the Hall of Languages, and a small speech, the ivy oration, given by a member of the senior class.

Other variations included passing the trowel to the junior class officers and the girls of every class marching around campus in white dresses carrying a rope of orange bunting, A 1940 photograph of four students

in the beginning of junior year. Here’s how it probably happened: you were throwing a football around with some buddies on a Saturday morning, wondering what kind of 30-rack to pick up. You’re all tired of Keystone, a concerning amount of which you had as an underclassman. Conveniently, there’s a cheaper, better option named Genny. It may be cheaper by about 40 cents, but tastes no better. It is the first and last time you got a 30 rack of Genny, but it’s an experience we all have around our junior year.

Blue Moon Blue Moon never intended to be a “college beer,” but when the crowd at Faegan’s is knocking down plastic cups full of the stuff after guessing correctly on the flip of a quarter, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t indeed a college beer. Poured in a tall pint glass with an orange slice hanging on the rim, Blue Moon is perfect for classy occasions, but that’s not how we’ll remember it. Although we’ll soon be enjoying them on front porches and at dinner tables, memories of clutching four Blue Moons at a time will always have a special place in our hearts.

Keystone Light The number of times that I have said, “Well, that was the last Keystone I’ll ever drink,” is really high. Yet, for some unexplainable reason, I just can’t let Keystone not be a part of my life. The frat party and day-drink staple has become forever associated with my time here at Syracuse. “The significance of the planting of the ivy has become so vital to students leaving the university…the tradition has been commemorated by almost every graduating class,” a 1931 Daily Orange article said.

The death of the Mathew Matic’s family In collaboration with “evil powers,” Mathew Matic’s family would come to SU every year to inflict pain and grief on the sophomore class in the form of a required calculus class.

During commencement week, the “surviving” sophomore would dispose of the bodies of John. R. Calculus and his wife, Mary Anna Lytics, in a lightheartedly macabre production.

The 1780 Calculus 5-page burial packet features drawings of men in white cloaks with torches circling a burning casket, theories on the origins of the Mathew Matic’s family and even a song.

Here’s just one verse: “He was a man of horrid fame, of horrid fame he was, To torture Sophs, to scare the Fresh was John R.’s perfect glee.”

Over the years, the Mathew Matic’s family were buried across Syracuse in a variety of dark ways. This list includes burning at the pyre, air launch by balloon and drowning in Oneida, Onondaga, Skaneateles, and Cazenovia lakes.

After the ceremony was complete, the class would often picnic with song and dance.

This ceremony is one of the oldest on campus. The last records of it from SU Archives date back to 1891.

But just five months ago, Blank wasn’t doing her capstone as a comic. She was 35 pages deep into a 60-page paper on 18th century gothic literature, and hating it.

It’s not that Blank doesn’t love English — she does. In fact, she came to SU as a biochemistry major and quickly realized that studying English was what she wanted to do with her life.

“I don’t separate art and writing. I do comics because that is the accepted way to combine these things, but it’s just natural for me,” Blank said. “When I write I want there to be pictures. I really enjoy creation, more so I really enjoy consuming creating.”

In order to truly combine her passions and make her project less unbearable, Blank went to her adviser, Erin Mackie, at the end of the fall semester and proposed a new project. She would still use the paper and the research she had done thus far, but she would focus the rest of her time through the end of the school year on the comic.

Blank remembers telling her friend about

the proposed idea, and thinking about how if her proposal was rejected, she would feel that SU, while being a fine fit, was not the best fit.

“But they let me do it, without even much of a fight. And now I am really happy with Syracuse,” Blank said.

Mackie said that she was thrilled to go to Blank’s final presentation and was proud that she was able to compare the novel and her illustrations on a highly intellectual level and really explained how they reinforced one another. She is currently working with Blank to help get the project published.

Blank feels lucky that Syracuse has given her so many opportunities to pursue what she loves, perhaps why she herself has given a lot of her time to the community.

At the recent Rainbow Banquet, held at the SU Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center on April 21, she was introduced as a genuine and gentle person, an appropriate segue to her speech regarding coming out at SU and finding community here.

But Blank doesn’t like the idea of having too much attention focused on her, or being seen as a spokesperson for the LGBTQ community.

“I am uncomfortable with myself taking up a lot of space, I don’t seek out chances to

speak on behalf of a larger community, it just happens and is just necessary at this point,” Blank said.

Mackie is excited to see what Blank will do after she graduates, as she thinks some of Blank’s work was sometimes stifled by being over-committed and involved. She said that Blank is able to process information and formulate high-level arguments that aren’t often seen in undergraduate students. She believes the world has yet to see what Blank is capable of when she really commits to a project.

And while Blank doesn’t know where she’ll be in the next few years, be it graduate school at Syracuse or an MFA program elsewhere, she knows she desires to continue to commit herself to English and drawing comics.

“When I am laying on my death bed I want to look back and say ‘I made something,’ even if I don’t become super famous, I want to have left something behind,” Blank said. “I am just glad Syracuse University really gave me the opportunity to begin that.” ararcham@syr.edu

treanor were the biggest reason she’d chosen SU over North Carolina after a long deliberation.

The next day, she wore cleats.

During the Niskayuna, New York, native’s time at Syracuse, she switched positions, bought into Gait’s mindset and will soon leave the program as the most accomplished player in its history. She’s a three-time Tewaaraton Award finalist, broke the record for program goals and became the first to win three consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year awards.

But the player who’s won almost everything still doesn’t have the one thing she came to college to get.

She’s about to begin her last run at an NCAA championship, starting when the No. 4-seeded Orange face either Stony Brook or host Boston College in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. For the last three years, Syracuse and Treanor have been unable to overcome the same obstacle in the tournament’s final weekend: Maryland. And again the Terrapins are undefeated, ranked No. 1 and in Syracuse’s path in the semifinal. Treanor has one final shot to rewrite the narrative that she’s great, but can’t win on the sport’s biggest stage.

“It’s do-or-die at this point,” SU assistant coach Michelle Tumolo said. “If there’s a year we could do it, it’s this year. We have everything we need. It’s championship or bust.”

Syracuse has a veteran backline, a brick wall goalie when she’s on and one of the nation’s deepest attacks. The team’s fourth-leading goal scorer was an All-American last season. Treanor is on pace to finish with her lowest career goal total, and she couldn’t care less.

Usually when she scores — as she’s done a school-record 254 times — it looks like a pregame warmup line as she nonchalantly walks away to hug her teammates.

SU predicates its success on buying into the team-first culture, something everyone from her family to former teammates believes to be true about Treanor. Those close to her say it might sound like an empty cliché, but she genuinely feels indifferent about personal performance unless it helps her team succeed.

“You don’t score to get on stat sheet. You score to beat a team,” Treanor said. “It’s a culture thing here. You’re a part of something way bigger than yourself. You buy into all the things the coaches say because that’s the standard.”

In Treanor’s first year at Syracuse, when she switched from natural midfielder to attack, she broke the school record for goals by a freshman. A season later, she led the nation in points. In her senior year, despite seldom taking them since high school, Gait asked Treanor to be on the draw.

In her first game at the position, she broke the record for draw controls in a contest (19) and subsequently shattered the singleseason mark (189 and counting).

“We get (players) to buy in because, if you don’t, there’s no point in being here,” Tumolo said. “… They’ll believe the sky is green if we ask them to. Kayla is a fine example of that.”

The entire Treanor family, including Kayla, doesn’t think she would’ve had the same success if she went to another school.

Being told to trade in flip-flips for cleats was only the start. Treanor easily bought into Syracuse’s culture because she’d been sculpted by coaching philosophies all her life.

It began with her father, Mark Treanor, when he cradled her in his backpack while coaching a third-grade basketball clinic on Saturday mornings. He coached three sports across two decades for Niskayuna High School. The only way the Treanor girls saw their dad, her mother Janice joked, was to go to all the games.

She idolized her father, John Wooden and the work ethic it took for Bo Jackson to play two sports at once. She loved Roy Williams and read his book, “Hard Work: On and Off the Court.”

“She thinks hard work will take her the places she wants to go,” Mark said. “She

really believes that stuff.”

Treanor dragged anyone she could — family, coaches and neighbors — to the high school track where she ran sprints, did ladder drills and played endless wall ball. When Mark got home from work in the summer, he found her waiting by the door. He wanted a beer and his chair, but got lacrosse drills instead. They always started with 50 throws each, right- and left-handed.

She did all this, she said, to be a dependable teammate. She didn’t know it then, but those games of catch groomed her to assume Tumolo’s position freshman year after the senior tore her ACL right before the NCAA tournament. Treanor had to play left attack, which would’ve been much more difficult if she hadn’t taught herself to be ambidextrous.

“She was always out in the backyard practicing stick skills,” Ritchie Assini, her neighbor, said. “... Talking about the work ethic side of it, she was always putting in that extra minute.”

One Friday night in high school, during Alyssa’s senior year, the lacrosse captains were supposed to do a fundraising bake sale at a school concert. But Alyssa missed it because of a wake, and the other captains gave her a hard time for not being there. She felt she’d let the team down and ended up crying at the granite-topped island in the middle of their family’s kitchen.

As Alyssa got more emotional, her sister looked up from dinner.

“You know what I do for my team?” Kayla said calmly. “I score goals. I don’t bake (freaking) brownies.”

Her parents still laugh about the deadpan remark and her inability to see how making brownies could somehow help a team be better at lacrosse. She always had a different understanding of how to improve.

She refused to sit still at a young age unless it was to watch ESPN Classic documentaries with her dad. She ran laps around the house rather than play Barbie and watch Disney movies with Alyssa. She hasn’t changed. When her computer broke during finals week two years ago, she worked out instead. It’s not uncommon for her to do four- to five-hour shooting marathons with teammates, like freshman Nicole Levy, SU’s second-leading scorer who came to SU partly because of Treanor.

In one game during eighth grade, her second season playing lacrosse, Alyssa remembered Kayla’s legs buckling because she was tired from running so much. She couldn’t really move and had to lean on her stick for support.

Treanor subbed herself off, re-entered a minute later and scored three goals. Three years later she played her entire junior season with a torn tendon in her left foot, according to Niskayuna coach Peter Melito.

The attention and awards throughout her lacrosse career make Treanor uncomfortable, her mom said. She doesn’t like to be singled out. The nation’s No. 1 recruit in 2013, offered a scholarship after her first year of high school, said she didn’t know that people knew about her especially before she arrived. Or that Gait talked her up long before she got to Syracuse. “(The attention) drives her nuts,” Alyssa said. “Her whole purpose is to draw a double so she can find an open teammate. It’s always been like that with her.”

When her parents compliment her specifically, even in private, she lectures them about understanding the bigger picture. When Treanor won MVP of the 2015 ACC tournament for leading SU to the championship by scoring two double-overtime game-winners in four days, she put the award in a cardboard box and hid it out of sight in her apartment.

When her parents visited later, she quietly had them take it home. The box for the Syracuse team MVP award she won this season, her mother said, didn’t even get opened.

“That can be viewed as she has so many accomplishments that she’s egocentric about it, but that’s not the case,” her mother said. “She’s almost embarrassed.”

“She’s proud of it,” her father said. “But she doesn’t want it to be a distraction. If the whole team gets a ring, she wears it proudly. If she wins an individual trophy, it goes in a box and to us.”

Treanor finds herself in the same rut that’s ensnared all of SU’s best. A careerending loss, coaches and teammates said, won’t diminish her legend because no Syracuse team or player has ever won it all.

Before Treanor came Katie Rowan, Alyssa Murray and Tumolo. Before Maryland it was Northwestern that Syracuse couldn’t beat.

The cycle’s only remedy is to win the national championship.

For four years, on the day before she returns to Syracuse from winter break, she’s met with her trainer, Ron Greenfield. They always write down a list of goals for the upcoming season.

They keep two copies, one for Treanor and the other for Greenfield. Every year, the national championship has topped the list.

If Syracuse doesn’t end the season with a win, the program’s best-ever ends her career without the only award she ever wanted from the game. Now she has one last chance to capture what’s eluded her so far. And no matter how she feels about it, the attention is on her to lead Syracuse there.

“I’ve never thought about it before,” Treanor said about her legacy. “… because it’s not over. I’m not done.” sjfortie@syr.edu | @sam4tr

MEN’S BASKETBALL FINAL FOUR RUN In its last appearance in the Big East tournament, Syracuse made it all the way to the championship game before losing to Louisville, eventually earning a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. SU crushed No. 13 seed Montana and then beat No. 12 California in the first two rounds. In the Sweet Sixteen, it upset No. 1 seed Indiana, led by Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller, and then limited Marquette to 39 points to advance to the Final Four.

But against a Michigan team with five future NBA players, SU’s poor shooting led to a loss in a Final Four game it wasn’t expected to be in.

MEN’S BASKETBALL’S 25-0 START TO 2013-14 SEASON

WOMEN’S LACROSSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP LOSS

The Orange got off to its best start in school history by winning the first 25 games of the year. Led by freshman point guard Tyler Ennis, SU shot through the national rankings. Included in the run were memorable wins against Duke and Pittsburgh. The win against Duke set the all-time record for an on-campus crowd and the Orange won 91-89 in overtime in the two schools’ first meeting as ACC foes. On the road at Pittsburgh, Syracuse trailed Pitt by one with 4.4 seconds left but Ennis pulled up from nearly halfcourt and drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to extend the Orange’s win streak.

In Syracuse’s second championship game appearance in three years, the Orange let Maryland score five goals in the game’s opening five minutes and eventually lost the matchup, 15-12.

While the game was just another loss to Maryland — since head coach Gary Gait started coaching SU, his program is 1-11 against UMD — it was the last game SU legends Alyssa Murray and Kayla Treanor played together.

NCAA SANCTIONS The NCAA released a 94-page report detailing improper academic benefits, violations of the school’s drug policy and a lack of institutional control that had taken place over the course of more than a decade involving the men’s basketball and football teams. Afterward, Director of Athletics Daryl Gross stepped down, head men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim said he would retire in three years and the teams were put on five years probation. The university won back scholarships, Boeheim started his ninegame suspension earlier than originally stated, but the school failed in its appeal of vacated wins.

SU beat Denver, 9-8, in the national semifinals and had a chance to win its third title in six years. But that hope was thwarted by Duke, as the Blue Devils overcame a 6-1 second-quarter deficit and scored 12 of the game’s next 13 goals, which was more than enough en route to the 16-10 victory.

Syracuse began the 2015 season needing to replace nearly 70 percent of its scoring from the year prior. All the Orange did was win 16 games and advance to the program’s first-ever Final Four. Crucial wins down the stretch against No. 5 North Carolina, No. 2 Clemson and No. 9 Notre Dame led to SU’s first conference title since 1985. A Ben Polk header in the 79th minute of the Elite Eight sent the Orange to the Final Four. But SU lost to Clemson in penalty kicks in the semifinal game.

Syracuse made an improbable run to the ACC and national championship games after a rough middle of the season. SU ran off an 11-game win streak to end the season and received a No. 4 seed in the tournament to host games for the first time in program history. SU took down powerhouse No. 1 seed South Carolina.

The team’s first Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four berths culminated in a national championship game appearance against No. 1-ranked and undefeated Connecticut. Syracuse native Breanna Stewart and the Huskies ended SU’s magical run.

Syracuse sat on the bubble on Selection Sunday, but after getting in as a No. 10 seed, the Orange made the most of its trip to the Big Dance. First with two dominant wins and then with two ferocious comebacks to reach the Final Four. SU trailed No. 11 seed Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 by as many as nine with under seven minutes to play and trailed No. 1 seed Virginia in the Elite Eight by as many as 15 with under 10 minutes to play.

Ozanne desires to help others in post-college career

Don Meister needed to raise the elevation of his swimming pool and he needed someone to help. So, the travel softball coach went to one of his most dependable players, Corinne Ozanne, and asked for assistance.

Ozanne worked for three days straight, moving more than 30 tons of construction stone singlehandedly as Meister worked from a bulldozer. Ozanne said the rocks where sharp, and it was one of the hottest weeks of the summer.

At the end of the third day, Ozanne refused to accept any payment.

All she wanted to do was help.

“From a young age, I liked helping people, and I liked springing my knowledge upon them,” Ozanne said. “… I was always helping my little sister with things, helping my brother.”

She said that she would help her sister with personal things, getting her out of tough situations, or drama with friends. Her brother, on the other hand, looked up to Ozanne in sports, so she would always be outside playing catch with him or helping him athletically.

Ozanne has made a name for herself as Syracuse’s (27-25, 9-14 Atlantic Coast) alltime leader in career home runs with 50.

But she’s also developed a reputation as a mentor. After she graduates from Syracuse, Ozanne plans on becoming either a teacher or a softball coach, so she can help others learn from what she’s been through.

She works at the Syracuse University Early Education and Child Care Center during the week, and is set to earn her degree in early childhood development. The two buildings that house the center are just a short walk beyond the outfield fences at SU Softball Stadium.

“She’s great with kids,” said Sydney O’Hara, one of Ozanne’s teammates and

fellow early childhood development major.

“She’ll come home from the preschool she works at and tell the stories, she’ll be like, ‘I had this kid on my lap, and they wanted a hug, and then I had syrup all over my face.’

She loves it.”

Megan Dellegrotti, a health and physical education teacher at Ozanne’s high school, saw her excitement in regard to teaching, too. Dellegrotti answered questions Ozanne had about teaching on a daily basis.

“How do you deal with that?”

“How do you deal with your kids?”

“How do you do that?”

Dellegrotti fielded all of her questions, and Ozanne said she would listen to every answer. She respected Dellegrotti as a mentor because with Dellegrotti as her teacher and basketball coach, the two had developed a close bond over the years.

“I just tried to be honest and explain to her that everything you do takes patience,” Dellegrotti said, “and you have to think about your experiences and handle each situation differently.”

But Ozanne isn’t sure if she’s going to pursue teaching full time. She’s also considering coaching, a different kind of education.

Meister said he talked to Ozanne a few weeks ago and told her she’d be an asset to any coaching staff. He said any summer ball team in the country would take her in a heartbeat and she would be successful on the collegiate level, too.

Last summer, Ozanne returned from Syracuse to help Meister coach one of his 18U softball teams in a tournament in New Jersey. The team was on an eight-game losing streak heading into the tournament, but with Ozanne coaching, the team won six straight.

Ozanne helped the girls avoid things that other coaches might not have seen, she said — a byproduct of her experience as a player. She said she also has a closer bond with female athletes than a male coach does, so with her in charge instead of Meister, she was able to get on a different level with the girls.

“She turned that team around. When she left, they asked if she could stay. She’s a leader,” Meister said. “… She turns people into winners. People want to be Corinne.”

Ozanne’s unselfish attitude and willing to help others has been echoed at Syracuse as well.

O’Hara remembers a time when she went 0-for-4 at the plate during her freshman season. Used to being a star player in high school, O’Hara was feeling down, but Ozanne brought her back up.

“I want to give the kids the experience that I maybe didn’t have,” Ozanne said. “In the sense of having a coaching staff that didn’t want to just coach you, but also help you with your life goals and life decisions and everything else.”

And as much as Ozanne wants to be a mentor for younger players, she also wants

to hold them accountable. Meister said he’s never seen a player hold people accountable like Ozanne did while playing for his team, the Jersey Inferno.

Against a “really big California team,” in a travel softball tournament many summers ago, the Inferno was struggling. Down four late in the game, Meister didn’t think his squad would come back, and Ozanne could see him losing hope. She went into the field the next inning and made a few plays in the hole between third base and shortstop to keep the team alive.

She ran into the dugout and said, “That’s for you big guy.” Meister was stunned. In that moment, he knew she would make a great coach.

“She knows when to give you that look, she’s given me that look,” Meister said. “She holds everybody accountable. We never said to her, ‘You’re the captain’, she just took over.”

“Every coach in America” needs a Corinne Ozanne, Meister said. He said that people like her keep programs grounded and pass on a winning instinct that’s contagious.

In Ozanne’s first three years at Syracuse, the Orange posted a combined record of 67-80. In her senior season, SU has its first winning record since 2012. Syracuse head coach Mike Bosch said Ozanne is one of the biggest reasons for the turnaround.

Meister has considered opening a training facility with Ozanne, even looking into leasing a 23,000 square-foot building recently. He told Ozanne that with her talent as an athlete, and her experience as a player, she would make a goldmine out of it.

Still, the senior isn’t ready to make a commitment to any one career-path now. Coming out of college is too early to open up a facility, she said, because of the cost and time associated with opening one. It would take her five years to make any money, she added.

Ozanne plans to take the summer to weigh her options whether it’s going into teaching, coaching or opening up her own facility somewhere down the line. No matter what she chooses, Ozanne says her experiences as a player will help her continue to be the mentor that she already has become.

“With my experience with ups and downs in my career,” Ozanne said, “… I think that I’d be able to lead kids in the right direction.” mjfel100@syr.edu

mullins coach John Desko said. “… He’s been very versatile. He’s been able to cover quick players for us in the past. He’s been able to cover big, strong players for us.”

Gradually, Mullins picked up on learning defensive packages and techniques, but there’s no handbook on being 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds. Mullins’ size has been an obstacle on its own for the country’s best shooters, and it was an immediate advantage that forced Desko to supplant a freshman defender on the man-down unit.

Seamlessly he shadowed attacks and hacked away with his long pole, something only taken away for a couple weeks in his half-decade career as the coaching staff temporarily tested him as a short-stick defensive midfielder. But even after allowing his natural abilities to take control of his game, Mullins struggled with certain intricacies.

In the 2012 Big East championship against St. John’s, the first-year defender skated up Syracuse’s sideline with the ball and fired a bounce pass on a clear attempt.

Desko was incensed. Mullins was still grasping his team’s “mechanical” clearing method, and soiled a possession in the championship game right in front of his head coach.

He leans on that moment as one of his biggest building blocks, a game he still salvaged with a previous career-high five groundballs.

“He’s gotten a lot better at a lot of things,” defensive guru and assistant coach Lelan Rog-

ers said. “A lot of people may not notice it, but as coaches, he’s elevated his game in every aspect.”

As much as he’s evolved his game, Mullins’s teammates know there’s at least one line of consistency from his first fall camp in 2011. There are only four current teammates who were there, but Mullins’ soft-spoken, bashful personality is virtually unchanged from the first practice he arrived at.

Nick Mellen didn’t anticipate it, but he took notice of Mullins’s introverted ways. Most upperclassmen embrace the meet and greets with the freshman class in the fall, but Mellen remembers a relatively quiet Mullins. The freshman saw a lot of himself in Mullins and hasn’t let go of that, only 15 games into a career he hopes to carve out in a similar fashion.

“Being around someone like that who’s really mild-mannered, very calm, cool and collective,” Mellen said, “he doesn’t panic ever.”

Mullins’ in-game mantra has resonated with Mellen: “We’re going to get scored on, we just got to move forward.”

His words rang a little louder in a brutal stretch of games where the Orange lost four times — three in overtime — in a five-week span.

Syracuse blew fourth-quarter leads to Duke and Johns Hopkins. Mullins remained calm.

The tested veteran helped sew his defense back together. A goalie change helped with that, but Mullins has seen SU’s defensive schemes finally come together. Schemes that previously collapsed with one person’s mistake. But that’s why he stuck with defense in the first place. It’s a unit.

One player can take the reins on offense, but not on the other side of the field. He’s one of several vital pieces to Syracuse’s defensive puzzle.

That’s how he’s made a name for himself. “(Brandon) doesn’t need the notoriety.

The best player in SU history has one final shot at winning the only award she wants

ayla Treanor wore flip-flops. And Gary Gait didn’t like it.

While working a summer camp on the grass field by Manley Field House, SU’s head coach thought Treanor’s footwear showed a lackadaisical effort. At the end of her freshman season weeks prior, Treanor posted a teamleading six points against an All-American senior defender in an 11-10 Final Four loss to Maryland. But that didn’t matter.

The culture of Gait’s program was built on the bedrock of non-stop intensity, regardless of circumstance. Gait pulled Treanor aside for a conversation. About seriousness. About leadership. About how the younger girls looked up to the older ones in orange jerseys, just like she had four years earlier.

“Gary’s word is God to Kayla,” her sister, Alyssa said. “Whatever (her coaches) say, that’s the law.”

SU defender Brandon Mullins shines as career nears end

Brandon Mullins never succumbed to the itch. That inherent, irresistible feeling every 5-yearold gets when approaching a soccer ball in front of a barren net or a basketball feet away from an open hoop. The itch to score. Instead, he remembers moving away.

Mullins’s father, David, still laughs at the thought of his son charging toward a soccer ball in his earliest years playing the sport.

Mullins gave the impression he was going to challenge for possession, but always stopped. Without fail, he reverted back to his most comfortable form. He wanted to prevent the other team from scoring.

“It’s just kind of a pride thing,”

Mullins said of his defensive tendency. “You’re just not going to let the other guy score.

“I don’t know what it is, other than being able to stop people.”

And in every sport he’s played, including a decorated football career that left him with a last-minute offer to play at Notre Dame, he hasn’t gotten out of anyone’s way.

Mullins blossomed into a premier

defender, but stuck with lacrosse.

It’s the sport that lends itself best to players who blend agility and physicality, arguably the two biggest trademarks of his game.

He’s punctuated his five-year Syracuse (11-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast) career with highlight-reel hits and game-saving takeaways. Those are the fruits of a steep learning curve upon arriving to SU, the Mecca

of lacrosse relative to Mullins’s hometown Coppell, Texas.

He hardly faced any top-level talent in high school. That forced him to learn on the fly as the doit-all man on defense from his first year at Syracuse.
