Letter from the Editor: Welcome to Northwestern Dear incoming Northwestern students,

I bet it’s been a long summer.

You may be bored, or itching to move in to your dorm and meet your roommate. Maybe you’re dreading move-in day and the start of college.

Either way, you’re not alone.

And now, you have something to distract yourself. This is the Orientation Issue, meant to give you a primer on all things Northwestern before you show up in a few weeks. If you do what I did and quickly flip through it, just looking at the photos without reading a single word, you may be a bit behind when you show up (Side note, consider reading up on what is going to happen during Wildcat Welcome. I didn’t and was very confused for a few days).

The Orientation Issue includes advice from students as well as information on Northwestern sports, social life and academics. It also includes some valuable information about Evanston, the town you’ll live in for the next several years.

This is likely the first time you’ve held a copy of The Daily Northwestern, but I hope it’s not the last. We print weekdays during the school year, and work around the clock to try to provide quality news coverage of Northwestern and Evanston.

If you have an inkling of interest in journalism, even if you’re not in Medill, I’d encourage you to give reporting — or photographing, designing, or editing — a try. And if you’ve never done it before, don’t sweat. I knew nothing about journalism when I showed up Fall Quarter freshman year, but thanks to many patient and kind upperclassmen,

I got the training I needed.

That reminds me: You may already be planning out which student groups you will join and what goals you’ll achieve when you get here, like I did.

Going into my first year, I was sure that I would play for the club soccer team, write for the student newspaper and maybe join a sorority or some other social group. About five minutes into the first tryout for the soccer team, it became clear that my plan would not work out (Everyone had gotten so much better at soccer since I stopped playing at 15).

And after deciding that Greek life wasn’t for me, I only ended up joining one of the groups I had planned to. However, I joined some others I had never heard of before, and had some experiences I didn’t think possible. Through my time at

The Daily, I’ve gotten to talk to Northwestern and Evanston officials, scout out a dog beach to find people to interview and even cover the final speech Barack Obama gave as president.

So, don’t worry if your plan doesn’t work out.

You will also get to do some wild and unexpected things during your time at Northwestern, and The Daily will be here to write about them. We can’t wait to see the stories you will create, the questions you will raise and the changes you will make.

But all that comes later. For now, read through this issue and learn a little.

Northwestern changes food provider

As incoming freshmen meet their peer adviser groups at Allison Hall, Foster-Walker Complex, Sargent Hall and Elder Hall for meals during Wildcat Welcome, they will be the guinea pigs for Compass Group North America, Northwestern’s new food service provider.

Compass, which took over from former providers Sodexo and Aramark July 1, has promised to renovate Northwestern’s dining culture. They plan to change the layouts and concepts of all four dining halls, closing each one in successive 90-day periods, starting with Elder in July and ending with Allison at the end of 2018, to create modernized, transparent spaces, Karl Behrens, Compass’ chief operations officer in the project division, told The

Daily in May. Each dining hall will have a specific ambiance and scheme — Plex will be stocked with ‘micro-restaurants to achieve an urban dining experience, Allison aims to teach students about food, Elder will be serving more street and handheld food, and Sargent’s goal is to have a farm-to-table feel, Behrens said.

In terms of the actual food, one student described the previous offerings as “lacking seasoning, flavor and any compelling reason to be consumed.” Okay, fine, that was me. But, there’s reason to be optimistic about Compass.

The University chose Compass due to its superior food quality, among other reasons.

Changes will be made to Norris University Center, a hub of student life and on-campus dining options, as well. Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, holdovers from last year, will remain in the building to satisfy your coffee fix, and Starbucks will even be offering mobile ordering this year, Behrens said.

Otherwise, Compass is introducing entirely new restaurants and a different seating scheme as well, according to Behrens and Jeremy Schenk, Norris’ executive director. The new spots include Budlong Hot Chicken, a Nashville-style chicken restaurant; Wildcat Deli, which will offer sandwiches; Asiana Foodville, an Asian concept; and Juicy Lucy, serving Minneapolis-style cheeseburgers. In addition, MOD pizza will have create-your-own pizza and a salad bar called Roots and Seeds will offer fresh salad ingredients.

All the change will require some inconvenience — each dining hall will be successively closed for 90 days as it undergoes renovation, but ultimately, Behrens said students will be better for it.

“At the end of the day, we just want to have a vibrant space where students can come to this location for more than a meal,” Behrens said.

A guide to essential events on campus

From free-food to outdoor concerts, there is always something happening around campus and it’s impossible to experience everything. Here’s the lowdown on some NU and Evanston events to keep on your radar this year.

Dog Days

As a newly-adopted resident of the Chicagoland area, hot dogs will become a staple part of your diet. Every spring, the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity sells hot dogs to students around campus at $2 a piece. They also provide delivery in the evenings until 1 a.m., making it the perfect latenight study snack. The funds from the week-long philanthropy event benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Take advantage of the cheap dogs while you can, before you know it the week will be over.

Homecoming Football Game

The one time that NU feels like a true Big Ten school, Homecoming Weekend is full of alumni reminiscing about their time at NU, a parade and an early morning football game. For most students, it’ll feel like a typical game day, only you’ll spot a few older faces at your typical tailgates. Make sure to be on the lookout for some famous NU alumni like Stephen Colbert (Communication ’86) and Mike Greenberg (Medill ’89) as they are known to come back to campus to visit.

Big Bite Night

As new students, this is your first introduction to your Associated Student Government, the governing student body at Northwestern, and of course it involves food. Big Bite Night is a partnership between ASG and multiple Evanston restaurants, where you and your fellow Wildcats can go to participating restaurants and receive free small bites. From free sushi at Todoroki to fries at Epic Burger, make sure to mark your calendars for this one.

Dance Marathon

You may have heard about this on your tour of Northwestern, but every winter, Northwestern students stay up for 30 hours straight in a big tent behind the Norris University Center to raise money for a different beneficiary. Last year, Northwestern University Dance Marathon raised over $1.1 million for Cradles to Crayons and the Evanston Community Foundation. This year’s beneficiary is Communities In Schools of Chicago. If you don’t feel like staying up for 30 hours straight, don’t worry, it can be a quiet and rejuvenating weekend during a hectic Winter Quarter.

Mee-Ow Shows

For two weekends only during Winter Quarter, the improv group Mee-Ow puts on a themed show that is one third sketch comedy, one third improv and one third music. Traditionally held in Shanley Pavilion, the show moved to McCormick Auditorium in Norris last year to accommodate more students and it was still sold out. If you’re thinking of skipping, remember that Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Communication ’83) and Seth Meyers (Communication ’96) were members of Mee-Ow during their time at NU, so it might be worth checking out one of the packed shows. elizabethbyrne2020@u.northwestern.edu

Young the Giant leads, CupcakKe stars at Dillo

Dillo Day is an essential Northwestern experience. It’s a celebration of students’ hard work, of good food, better music and the first tastes of spring in the Midwest (although it has more often than not felt a bit too much like winter).

Dillo began at NU in 1972 as Armadillo Day, a small event organized by some homesick Texan students who wanted to honor their home state’s official mammal. Since then, it has become the largest student-run music festival in the nation, fully organized by the student group Mayfest.

Set on the scenic Lakefill, Dillo Day features two stages hosting artists beginning around noon and ending nearly 12 hours later (It is important to note here that Dillo is very much a marathon, not a sprint). Various food trucks and vendors also line the Lakefill to refuel students and other

festival-goers.

This year, Young The Giant headlined, giving a performance that was interrupted midway through when the skies opened up, soaking the audience but not phasing the band. Joey Bada$$ was the daytime headliner and Daniel Caesar, Whitney and TOKiMONSTA were also on the main stage. Guerrilla Toss, Jasmine Infiniti, VIOLENCE and Dos Santos appeared on the WNUR stage, but the real star of the show was the Chicago-based rapper CupcakKe. CupcakKe, who appeared on stage several hours late to meet an eagerly-awaiting audience, is known for her ridiculously explicit — yet impossibly clever and catchy — lyrics. Students erupted with excitement as CupcakKe, only 21 years old, sang the opening lines to her most famous song, “Deepthroat,” and provided a performance that will be difficult to top in Dillo Days to come. allysonmauch2020@u.northwestern.edu

Josh Peck

Josh Peck, well-known for his role in the Nickelodeon show “Drake & Josh,” brought some humor and levity to Northwestern as NU Hillel’s fall speaker in November.

Peck, now an internet personality, cracked jokes throughout the evening in Cahn Auditorium, even teasing that he would celebrate his birthday at the famed (and now, unfortunately, gone) Tommy Nevin’s Pub in Evanston.

He also discussed the importance of Judaism to his identity, noting that he has become more connected to his religion as he has gotten older.

Further, Peck spoke about the difficulties of being a child star.

“My saving grace was that I was overweight, and my awkward teenage years were chronicled on television forever,” Peck said. “In a weird way, that saved me because I just never got too impressed with myself, and I fell in love with the work. I just

couldn’t believe that I was so lucky to be doing the thing that I loved and making a living out of it.”

York Times and the author of best-selling books “Bad Feminist” and “Hunger,” among others, came to speak at NU in April.

At the event, hosted by the Contemporary Thought Speaker Series and the Women’s Center in a packed Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Gay discussed pop culture, race and writing. She gave advice to younger black girls, noting that standing up for oneself and resisting the stereotype of “angry black women” is a powerful tool.

Weinberg junior Toni Akunebu attended the event and told The Daily she resonated with Gay’s discussion of how to tell personal stories and make the private, public. “(She’s) hilarious and a gem of a human that has this very particular experience,” Akunebu said. “But this experience can also be universalized, and she has so much to share and so much to give to the world.”

Actress and TV writer Lena Waithe spoke at Northwestern in February during an event hosted by the Contemporary Thought Speaker Series, Multicultural Filmmakers Collective, NU Women Filmmakers Alliance and Rainbow Alliance.

Waithe, an alumna of Evanston Township High School, discussed her career in television and how she went from being an avid TV-watcher to the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy series writing. She emphasized the importance of supporting other writers of color who are trying to enter the TV industry and of increasing representation in the field.

Sarah Parisien, an ETHS student who attended the event, said she was first inspired by Waithe while watching her acceptance speech at the Emmys and was excited when she heard she would be speaking in Evanston. She said it “meant the world” to her to have Waithe as a role model.

“Knowing that you could come out of ETHS and be something as great as she is, that just inspires me,” Parisien said. “I can do the exact same thing.”

Roxane Gay

Roxane Gay, an op-ed contributor for The New

Comedian Trevor Noah regaled a packed Cahn Auditorium on October 15 to talk about his experiences, from growing up during apartheid South Africa to his life as a comedian. Interviewed by John Eligon (Medill ’04) of The New York Times, the two discussed racial identity and how it plays a role in America today.

Much like during his time on TV hosting “The Daily Show,” Noah did not hesitate to make remarks on the current political state, including denying that it was “Trump’s America,” but rather it is America “dealing with Donald Trump.”

Eligon and Noah also discussed the role of journalism in the rapidly changing field that is the media, speaking to an auditorium of primarily journalism students and students interested in the two speakers’ roles in the media.

A guide to Evanston, NU elected officials

With the school year starting soon and midterm elections right around the corner, here’s a comprehensive guide to who represents Northwestern students — on campus and off of it.

On Campus

Associated Student Government represents the student body at Northwestern. Led by Weinberg seniors Sky Patterson and Emily Ash, who serve as president and executive vice president, respectively, ASG helps provide funding to student groups across campus and acts as a link between students and the administration.

In June, ASG members voted to change the apportionment of its Senate, moving to a system of representation based on school affiliation rather than residential area. Now, each school is allotted a specific number of Senators.

Senators make up a number of standing and ad-hoc committees assigned to managing certain focus areas — like student activities, community relations or sustainability — that ASG has a stake in. Each committee is led by a vice president in charge of its operation.

ASG members serve year-long terms, and elections for president and executive vice president typically occur spring quarter.

In Evanston

Evanston consists of nine wards, each represented in City Council by one alderman. Northwestern’s campus is located mainly in the 1st Ward and the 7th Ward, which are represented by Ald. Judy Fiske (1st) and Ald. Eleanor Revelle (7th).

Evanston’s nine-member City Council is led

by Mayor Steve Hagerty, who was sworn in in May 2017.

In Illinois

On a federal level, Evanston is represented by U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) Duckworth, who assumed office in 2017, recently became the first sitting senator to have a baby while in office. An Iraq War veteran, Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and suffered severe combat wounds, which caused her to lose both of her legs and damaged her right arm.

Durbin, who has served in the senate since 1997, is the Senate Minority Whip. He serves on the Senate Judiciary and Appropriations committees, and is a ranking member of the Senate defense subcommittee. He has been critical of the Trump administration, especially in regards to its relationship with Russia.

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) has been serving in Congress since 1999, representing Illinois’ 9th District.

Schakowsky is a Chief Deputy Whip for the Democratic party and a member of the House Budget Committee, as well as the House Energy and Commerce Committee, among others. She is known for her progressive views and her outspoken criticism of the Trump administration, most recently regarding immigration.

While the political science majors show off their knowledge by discussing obscure house races and the politically-inclined check FiveThirtyEight every day as congressional midterm elections heat up in the fall, there’s another governing organization that all students should pay attention to — Northwestern’s Associated Student Government.

ASG, the body that represents the undergraduate population of Northwestern, is composed of everyone from freshmen making their first forays into student life to a seasoned executive board, led

by ASG president Sky Patterson and executive vice president Emily Ash. The Weinberg seniors, elected last April in a tight and often contentious race in which they received 49.2 percent of the vote to their opponents’ 42.25 percent of the vote, ran on a platform of wellbeing, academic equity and community development.

Their victory was not without drama — resignations from the majority of ASG’s accessibility and inclusion committee, captained by the losing executive vice presidential candidate, and the vice president for student activities occurred soon after the winning candidates took office. However, Patterson and Ash are moving into the 2018-2019 school year with a new executive board, chief of staff, speaker of the senate and parliamentarian, and Patterson told The Daily in April she plans to demonstrate integrity and treat everyone with respect.

In the past, Patterson, the former vice president for academics, said she helped expand the Books for Cats program, which loans textbooks to lowincome students for STEM classes, and created a trans-inclusivity guide for faculty.

ASG had a busy 2017-2018, enacting structural changes with far-reaching resonance and passing resolutions supporting various causes. In April, ASG Senate, which meets weekly, voted to overhaul its student organization funding system, something former ASG president Nehaarika

Mulukutla said was a goal of six prior administrations. In June, Senate passed seat apportionment reform, allotting ASG seats on the basis of undergraduate school rather than housing district.

Earlier in the year, ASG passed a sexual assault training mandate for student organizations, hosted a pitch competition called Improve NU and created Wellness Week to foster conversation and provide tools regarding students’ mental and sexual health.

ASG plans to recruit new members in the fall.

My grandparents once got a commemorative platter from the governor because they had voted in nearly every election they had been able to for decades.

It was the ultimate “I Voted” sticker. I think they donated it to the Goodwill at some point, but it was a pretty nice platter.

I can’t guarantee you that if you start a habit of consistently voting during your college years that you’ll get the same sort of reward when you’re 60.

But if you’re as civically responsible as my grandparents, that won’t matter.

Evanston is a wonderful place to fill out a ballot. You can just show up during voting hours before an election, and with a few pieces of mail and an I.D., you’ll be able to register at the same time you vote.

You can also change your registration on voting day, which you’ll have to do if you change addresses every year, which you probably will. Oh, and also I say “voting hours” because Evanston has early voting, so polls are open at the Civic Center for

days before the official election day. Good news for anybody who hates Tuesdays.

So, vote! It’s so easy! Go with your friends!

Make a day out of it! (Although it only takes a few minutes) Once, during the 2016 primaries, Vampire Weekend came to campus in a get-out-the-vote campaign for Bernie Sanders. They sang “A-Punk” on the steps of a frat house before escorting a group of about 100 students to the polling place at the Civic Center. It was wild.

I guess what I’m saying is voting is cool. You get a sticker. One day, you may even get a platter.

And all that’s not to mention the people you’ll get to vote for: Presidents! Mayors! Aldermen!

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioners! The United States has a frankly wild amount of elected officials, and voting for them is not that hard. It’s kind of fun. Evanston gives you a ton of time to get it done and The Daily will probably have a run down on who is running for what.

I hope I’ve convinced you that voting is easy, important and cool. And something you should get into the habit of doing now, if only for the sticker. norashelly2019@u.northwestern.edu

This November, many new students will be able to officially voice their political opinions for the first time in the upcoming midterm elections. But whether you’re registered to vote in Illinois or not, you’ll need to be well-versed in the election if only to score a few extra points from your TA in your poli sci discussion section.

All of the state’s executive officers will be up for election, including governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller and treasurer. You’ll also see one state Supreme Court justice on the ballot, along with five Illinois Court of Appeals judges. Cook County will hold general elections for county commission president, county commissioner, county clerk and county sheriff, among other positions.

Here are some of the most important ballot items to look out for — from Springfield to Washington.

Governor & Lieutenant Governor

Illinois’ gubernatorial election is shaping up to be the country’s most expensive in history — billionaire businessman J.B. Pritzker is running on the Democratic ticket against Republican incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner. Since winning the primary in March, Pritzker has spent more than $21 million, more than doubling the $8.4 million spent

by Rauner. Rauner has been named one of the country’s least popular governors and has overseen a severe financial crisis in the state. Pritzker, on the other hand, has been criticized for establishment political ties and corruption allegations.

Illinois State Senate

In the State Senate, one of Evanston’s two representatives is up for grabs. Current state Rep. Laura Fine (D-Evanston) is running to fill the seat occupied by state Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston). Biss ran and lost against Pritzker in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Fine will face Republican Joan McCarthy Lasonde, who previously ran against Schakowsky for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and was defeated by 33 percentage points.

All three of Evanston’s seats in the state House of Representatives are up for grabs this November.

Incumbent Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) is running unopposed, and incumbent Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) will face Republican Julie Cho. State Rep. City: EPD adopts body cams, Cheesie’s closes

Due to national trends and some specific issues within the Evanston Police Department, all EPD officers are now required to wear body cameras.

The cameras will record the actions of all officers while on patrol, and any individual can request access to the recordings through the Freedom of Information Act. The five-year contract for the cameras cost the city $1.1 million.

While most agree they are a step in the right direction by increasing transparency, former 9th Ward Alderman Brian Miller suggested the police department needed to go one step further and change the protocol for making arrests.

Gubernatorial Race Illinois will have its gubernatorial election this November, and the race between Northwestern alum J.B. Pritzker (School of Law ’93) and current Gov. Bruce Rauner is shaping up to be the country’s most expensive gubernatorial race in history.

It’s estimated Rauner spends $83,000 a day on his campaign — a seemingly small amount compared to Pritzker’s $207,000. Both billionaire candidates bring controversy to the table. Rauner is widely criticized for his role in Illinois’ budget impasse that nearly gave the state a junk credit rating. Further, tapes were released of a phone conversation Pritzker had with former Governor Rod Blagojevich about filling Barack Obama’s vacant senate seat where he calls Jesse White the “least offensive” African American for the job.

There was not one time I didn’t feel mildly ill from the sheer amount of cheese consumed through one of their sandwiches. But Cheesies had always stood by me, so, damn it, I stood by Cheesies and continued to assault my body with dairy … until I couldn’t anymore.

No, thanks to rising rent in downtown Evanston, a restaurant that defined a generation of Wildcats is no more.

The restaurant is looking for a new location in downtown Evanston.

Harley Clarke One of Evanston’s most divisive current issues is whether or not to demolish the Harley Clarke Mansion — a historic lakefront mansion just north of Northwestern’s campus.

Originally a private residence, then the national headquarters of Sigma Chi fraternity, the mansion served as home to the Evanston Arts Center until 2015, when the city decided the costs of maintaining the building exceeded its available funds.

Pro-Clarkers argue that demolishing the house would permanently erase a part of Evanston’s history, but those in favor of demolition (which is the current approved plan) say it’s the fiscally responsible thing for Evanston to do.

Cheesie’s Closes After serving NU students a healthy dose of night cheese for years via their creative grilled-cheese sandwiches, Cheesie’s unexpectedly closed its doors in June.

If I may editorialize for a moment, the loss of Cheesie’s felt like the sudden death of an old friend.

Cheesie’s was there for me during late nights in the newsroom. You know what I credit with getting me through my first big break-up? Cheesies. And where else would I have solidified some of my best collegiate friendships other than at 2 a.m. in Cheesies?

Campus: Alumna weds prince, econ joins STEM

While Evanston has its own host of news to keep us busy, so too does Northwestern! From NU alumna Meghan Markle marrying some British guy to Medill’s #MeToo moment, here’s everything you need to stay up to date about what went down last year.

A Wildcat Wedding Meghan Markle (Communication ’03) wed Prince Harry in May at Windsor Castle, becoming the first American to marry into the royal family since 1937.

The former “Suits” actress was a theater and international studies double major at NU, as well as a

member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Markle, now officially dubbed Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex, met Prince Harry on a blind date in July two years ago.

The lavish ceremony, in which Markle came dressed in a Givenchy wedding gown and tiara, was followed by a carriage ride through town. More than 100,000 people waited along the procession route as millions others tuned in worldwide. Not bad for a Wildcat, eh?

Unmet Demands

Asian American Studies and Latina and Latino studies programs, and provide a smooth transition for food service workers.

Without departmentalization, students and faculty say several ethnic studies programs lack adequate funding.

Amidst the food service transition, one of students’ demands was that NU stop using the service E-Verify, which checks if employees are eligible to work in the U.S. Later that month, the University’s new provider announced it will not use the service.

New restaurants, shops open Evanston locations

Beyond Northwestern’s Evanston campus, the streets of the city are lined with an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes, retail stores and more. With this bustling business community, Evanston attracted dozens of new businesses last year. Here are some notable additions to the city.

Just over a year ago, Ovo Frito Cafe, located at 1936 Maple Ave., opened as a new breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant. The cafe offers American-style food with Latino influence. It’s location on Maple Avenue, close to many offcampus students, makes it a convenient option for students to fuel up on pancakes and eggs before a home football game. Amanecer Breakfast Tacos, located at 512 Main St., is another breakfast concept that opened up a storefront in the fall. While a little further from NU’s campus, the restaurant offers a unique menu of exclusively breakfast tacos. Make sure to hit these new breakfast places in the morning, as both close in the early afternoon.

Two French-inspired restaurants also debuted in Evanston this year. Jilly’s Bistro on 1512 Sherman Ave. replaced Creperie Saint Germain, a beloved crepe restaurant that looked like it belonged on the streets of Paris.

Jilly’s Bistro, formerly Z Breakfast Club, serves authentic French food and even features a few crepes on their menu. French Kiss Cafe, located at 517 Dempster St., has a less-traditional menu with a wide variety of options for breakfast.

Their menu has everything from fresh smoothies to authentic butter croissants.

Evanston also welcomed a variety of new cuisines for lunch and dinner. Over the summer, the owners of Bat 17 — a well-loved burger restaurant in Evanston — opened Falcon Eddy’s Barbeque at 825 Church St. The new restaurant serves Texas-style barbeque, a technique traditionally used for barbeque in Texas where the meat is cooked on low, indirect heat for a

long amount of time. The restaurant also offers a variety of sides, including Granny Apple cole slaw and jalapeno cornbread. Evanston also welcomed a more upscale American restaurant in 2018, Kinship. Located at 625 Davis St., the new establishment serves brunch and dinner every day but Tuesdays. Some interesting menu options include honey butter fries and the moroccan lamb burger.

The growing trend of Hawaiian poke invaded Evanston with the addition of Pono Ono, located at 1630 Chicago Ave., which uses sustainably sourced ingredients in all their dishes.

While customers can’t totally personalize their poke bowl, the flavor combinations on the menu can satisfy a variety of tastes. The Evanston restaurant also sells fresh pressed juices.

On the sweeter side, French pastry shop Cafe Coralie opened at 633 Howard St. in December.

The cafe is very similar to its sister cafe, Patisserie Coralie on 600 Davis St. While the new cafe may be a trek from the Evanston campus for some students, it could be a nice escape from bustling Evanston. National ice cream and candy chain Kilwins also announced a new location. The storefront will soon open at 1724 Sherman Ave. Though food is an essential piece to the Evanston business community and the many college students who support it, some new retailers also came to the city over the last year.

Thanks to the new Target location at 1616 Sherman Ave., it’s is just a short walk from campus for students. The store has everything a typical neighborhood Target has, but condensed. Consider it your one-stop shop for everything. Evanston locations for the wellknown barbershop chain Floyd’s 99 Barbershop at 1741 Sherman Ave., and wood sign creative studio Board & Brush at 802 Dempster St., also popped up in the city last year.

Congratulations Wildcat! Your acceptance into Northwestern is nothing short of a major accomplishment. The small, intimate campus can prove challenging for many individuals at times and a comprehensive list of resources is crucial for all new students.

Here are a few things that should be on your radar:

Office of Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research is a fantastic way to integrate your learning experiences with real world application at NU. The office provides opportunities for undergraduate students to work on independent projects during the academic year and over the summer. Language grants for students interested in studying a language in the United States or abroad are also available through this office. The list of grants and programs available are extensive in this office, and a wonderful way to build your portfolio.

Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP)

Wildcats don’t stop in the summer just because school does. Many entry-level summer internships for undergraduates are unpaid and the Summer Internship Grant Program helps students acquire funding for costs like travel, housing and other necessities. Students that have or are planning to secure an unpaid summer internship can apply during the spring and receive funding. The application process can also help students narrow down various unpaid internship options.

At NU, it’s wise to learn to expect the unexpected. Sometimes your laptop will break before your Chem midterm, you may fall victim to the flu going around your residence hall, or suddenly need to travel home. For students that cannot afford major financial emergencies, Student Enrichment Services can help. The service partners with first-generation, low-income, and DACA/undocumented students to help foster spaces of inclusion and accessibility on campus.

Purple Pantry

Off-campus and summer housing can sometimes be the cheaper alternatives for Northwestern students looking to stay in Evanston.

Learning to balance a budget and finding time to cook for yourself takes time to get used to.

The Purple Pantry helps by collecting donations from the Northwestern community and providing free groceries to students who have financial constraints. Purple Pantry provides support for any NU student that is hungry, all students need is their Wildcard and their own grocery bags.

Howard Brown Health

Northwestern requires all students be covered by health insurance and offers plans for students. Searle Hall is the primary location for Northwestern University Health Service, where students can go with all medical ailments.

Another option for students is Howard Brown Health, which has a clinic in Rogers Park, is one of the nation’s largest LGBTQ organizations. They serve men, women, nonconforming and transgender folks, for a variety of medical services. It’s a great space for people that are not heteronormative identifying.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

You will probably here the acronym CAPS a lot, and it may be your first introduction into prioritizing your mental health, like it is for so many Wildcats. Counseling and Psychological Services provides counseling and therapy for individuals and groups on campus. Located on the second floor of Searle Hall, CAPS also provides drop-in sessions around campus with faculty members on different days of the week. They are a team of highly trained and qualified mental health professionals that are there for emotional crisis, developmental and adjustments needs. Students that are Pell Grant recipients can qualify for Northwestern insurances waivers, which covers the cost of mental health services. ahlaamdelange2019@u.northwestern.edu

Alison Flowers (Medill ’09), a former MJP research associate who helped coordinate and distribute the open letter, said her time working for him was “one of the most painful experiences” of her life.

Klein took a leave of absence the day after the initial allegations. More than a month after the initial allegations from 10 former students and employees, the group said 19 more women reached out to them citing similar accusations.

In July, University spokesman Al Cubbage said the University “cannot confirm the details that have been made public,” regarding Klein and the investigation into his behavior.

Swatting Incident Rocks Campus After students, faculty and staff hid following

reports of a man with a gun on the Evanston campus, Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew said the reports were the result of a hoax.

Glew dubbed the event a “swatting incident” and said police think the call came from somewhere southeast of Rockford, Illinois. The person who was thought to be the girlfriend who was reportedly shot was located and is safe, he said, and officers don’t believe she was involved in the swatting incident.

Several undergraduate and graduate students said professors were inflexible with deadlines or made students take exams the night of the incident, shedding light on what they said is a broader toxic productive culture.

“Overall, Northwestern … just doesn’t really consider students’ mental health when they tend to make decisions,” said Weinberg sophomore Nicole Tanda. “I think that’s a problem; not just from professors, but a larger administrative problem.” jacobholland2020@u.northwestern.edu

One Book to feature ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ in 2018

Each year, the University’s One Book One Northwestern program picks out a book for all incoming students to read and spend the year discussing and engaging with. Last year, the programming included a trip to the Tony award-winning musical “Hamilton” in Chicago; this year it will center around famed author Margaret Atwood.

Over the summer, new students received Atwood’s dystopian novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale” to read and prepare for the year’s programming, which will include Wildcat Welcome discussions, an escape room, a feminist art show, an open mic night and more, the One Book faculty chair, Helen Thompson said.

“The book invites so many kinds of engagement,” Thompson, a self proclaimed Atwood fan, said.

Most notably, Thompson said, Atwood, will be giving a keynote speech at the Chicago Campus

and a Q&A in Evanston on October 30th.

McCormick Junior Sadie Hood suggested “The Handmaids Tale” to the One Book selection committee last year prior to her involvement with the organization as a One Book Ambassador. Hood hopes students read the book not only as she first did as a coming of age story, but as a study in feminism with an eye towards politics today and to think about the potential temporality of the world we live in.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” was published in 1985, but gained popularity recently when Hulu did a TV adaptation of the story, starring actress Elisabeth Moss.

Weinberg senior and One Book fellow Meredith Belloni said the program is a good way to bring students together.

“We try to get everyone on campus talking about the same thing so there’s some kind of common ground with everyone on campus,” Belloni said.

Your intro to Greek life on campus

Though Northwestern is far from a large state school, a surprisingly vibrant Greek community exists on campus, with nearly 40 percent of the student body participating in Greek life. So what’s the first step towards going Greek?

A good place to start is understanding the structure of Greek life at Northwestern. There are four major governing bodies for NU’s Greek organizations: the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Association, the Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

IFC is responsible for 18 of the fraternities on campus: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Chi, Delta Tau Delta, Delta Upsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Theta Chi, Zeta Beta Tau and the Evans Scholars. SAE is returning back to campus in the fall following their suspension in April 2017.

PHA serves as IFC’s largest counterpart with 12 nationally recognized sororities. These are Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha.

IFC and PHA’s chapters all participate in formal recruitment during the first week of Winter Quarter. While sorority rush is more structured than IFC recruitment and does not allow recruiting of any kind before January, Northwestern’s rush process is less stringent than many other schools — PHA chapters do not require letters of recommendation.

Beyond these two large governing bodies exists two smaller councils: MGC and NPHC. These two councils each consist of both fraternities and sororities, and they’re set apart from IFC and PHA for their focus on culture.

The NU Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life website says the chapters are “culturally-based service-social organizations” with Latinx, Asian, South Asian and multicultural emphasises.

MGC has eight chapters, including Alpha Iota Omicron Fraternity, Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority and Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority.

NPHC, on the other hand, serves as the governing body for historically African-American fraternities and sororities, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

MGC and NPHC’s recruitment processes are less structured than those of PHA and IFC. Intake of new members happens throughout the year, and specific recruitment processes vary by chapter. NPHC Vice President Derick Wallace, a Weinberg senior, said their chapters tend to be a lot smaller than those of IFC or PHA but still maintain a strong campus presence.

If all these options aren’t enough, Northwestern also offers many pre-professional or special interest co-ed fraternities, from pre-business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi to the pre-law Phi Alpha Delta.

Others include pre-med and service organizations, which also host formal recruitment processes.

Wallace said it’s important to research the available chapters within all the Greek councils and be open to new possibilities during recruitment. MGC President Kathy Tian, a Weinberg senior, also advises those looking to go Greek to focus on how each chapter feels and their “vibe.”

“When you talk to (different chapters), there’s just a different vibe people get,” Tian said. “One isn’t necessarily better or right, it’s just different, and I think that’s the main thing people should use to judge whether or not they want to join an organization.” ruiqichen2020@u.northwestern.edu

NORTH webster Our guide to some essential Northwestern slang

If you’re attending Northwestern, chances are you had more books than friends as a child.

You were reading Dickens by the fifth grade, the SAT vocab section was your thing, and finding the perfect obscure word to spice up your essays still brings a quasi-sexual satisfaction. Your vocabulary was more refined and expansive than most of your peers, and you subtly reminded them of this on a daily basis.

Well, now you’ll be attending an institution filled with students with equally hefty vocabularies. However, you can get a leg up on the competition by learning these Northwesternspecific terms to wow your classmates and desperately cling to your linguistic superiority complex.

SPAC: As Northwestern is a private institution, most of our buildings are named after their donors, which means that most buildings have stupidly long names. Our north gym is officially called the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and Norris Aquatic Center. Cool. We just refer to it as SPAC (pronounced “spak” with a long nasal Chicago “a”). SPAC is the gym of your dreams.

Juice bar in the lobby, sauna in the locker rooms, free workout classes, and beautiful views of the lake. If you are into lifting this will be your second home. If you are anyone else, you will tell yourself you’ll come every day, and attend

exactly once.

Blom: The gym at the southern end of campus, Blomquist Recreation Center is the gym of the people. Sure, there’s no air conditioning and the design looks like somebody dumped second-hand weight equipment into your high school gym, but the total absence of built muscle bros will make you less self-conscious about your newfound inability to run a mile while trying to work off the freshman fifteen.

Hot Cookie Bar: The reason for your freshman fifteen. Every Friday night among the pallid pizza and questionable chicken stir fry, beautiful, shining trays of half-baked cookie dough emerge from the kitchens of Northwestern’s dining halls. With a crispy top and gooey middle, this dessert has been scientifically proven to relieve stress ten times better than any other comfort food. It has also been scientifically proven to cause fiery diarrhea two hours after consumption. You will likely feel ill after eating hot cookie bar. You will eat it anyways. Your body says no, but your tastebuds scream yes.

Core: Some colleges have gorgeous main libraries with vaulted ceilings and long wooden tables. We have the monstrosity in the middle of campus that is Main Library, aka Main.

If you want to work in a stunning collegiate library with rustling books providing the only soundscape, study in Deering Library.If you want a place where you can pretend to study

and just watch vine compilations, or chug a bottle of wine from a S’Well bottle while cramming for the exam you’re definitely going to fail, the center of Main, Core, is the place for you.

CAESAR: A necessary evil. CAESAR is the platform you’ll use to sign up for your classes, pay your tuition, and see your first ever B on your transcript (gasps). CAESAR will glitch.

CAESAR will crash. CAESAR will lie to your face and tell you it’ll keep you logged in for 30 days and then dump you out after a week. The phrase “duo factor authentication” means nothing to you now. Soon it will haunt your dreams.

Lakefill: Back in the ‘60s Northwestern was looking to expand into Evanston, but Evanston jacked property taxes sky high. In the ultimate eff you, NU trucked in thousands of tons of sand and gravel to dump into Lake Michigan, creating our most beautiful stretch of campus: the lakefill. A long stretch of grassy, tree spotted land running along Lake Michigan, the lakefill is beloved by all. Jocks play frisbee and football, music geeks have ukulele circles, stoners lay out in hammocks, sorority girls desperately attempt to get a tan during the three warm days of the year. If you do choose to participate in the popular date option of “lakefill and chill,” be forewarned that the rocks are not as comfortable as you might think.

Dillo: As if the Lakefill wasn’t incredible enough, it’s also home to the greatest day of the year: Dillo Day, aka the one day NU gets

to pretend to be a state school. The largest student-run music festival in the country, Dillo is comprised of a carefully calibrated mixture of good vibes, good food, glitter and ice luges.

Dillo is supposed to be a celebration of the return of spring after our long Chicago winters.

It is usually cold and rainy. Just remember, Dillo is a marathon, not a sprint.

Sherbucks/Norbucks: Because much of NU’s student population is comprised of hyper-privileged urbanites, it simply wouldn’t be sufficient to have just one place to get a grande skinny latte with an extra shot of espresso. Hence, we have two Starbucks: Norbucks (located in Norris University Center) and Sherbucks (located on Sherman Avenue).

Norbucks is great because it’s in the center of campus and makes it easy to meet up with people. Sherbucks is great because it’s not on campus.

The Deuce: You don’t have to drink and party to have an amazing, memorable time during your four years at NU. But, if collegiate debauchery is the route you choose to take, the Deuce can help you to achieve your goals.

Officially called the Mark II Lounge, the Deuce is THE place to go on Thursday nights. God’s people might have the land of milk and honey, but the rest of us have the land of hookups and cheap beer in the hedonistic paradise of the Deuce. janerecker2019@u.northwestern.edu

Go Cats! Show your purple pride with these traditions

Like any university with a 150+ year history, Northwestern has many traditions that are taken seriously by students and alumni alike.

Learn these before you come to campus and feel like a true Wildcat before you even step onto campus. These are just a few ways that NU students try to show off their Purple Pride.

March Through the Arch March Through the Arch is a relatively recent NU tradition, only starting in 2009.

Nonetheless, it’s one a favorite tradition among students at Northwestern, as it represents the bookends to a students’ time at school. During Wildcat Welcome, incoming students as part of the freshman class march through Weber Arch on the southeast corner of campus to kickoff their careers as Wildcats. The sidewalks along Weber Arch are always lined with family members, NU faculty and other students cheering on and welcoming the new students to Northwestern. The tradition comes back during a student’s senior year, when soon-to-be graduates march through Weber Arch the opposite way, providing a bittersweet moment signifying the end of their time at Northwestern.

Painting The Rock Originally a fountain, The Rock is a large ... rock located on South Campus right in the middle of University Hall, Kresge Hall and Harris Hall. The Rock, while stationary, is like a large billboard for student organizations around campus. Any student or group can sign up to guard The Rock for 24 hours, usually camping out in a tent stationed next to it. Once the 24 hours is over, it’s tradition

to paint the entire rock, usually in the middle of the night. It’s commonly used by student organizations to tell students about upcoming events or shows or make a statement about current events. This is one of Northwestern’s oldest traditions, dating back to the 1940s, and something most students try to do before they leave campus.

Wildcat Welcome, the Wildcat Dash kicks off Northwestern’s first home football game with the new freshmen class. After a tailgate outside Ryan Field, new students run across the field before the football team comes out to play. It’s similar to running the bases at a

baseball game before it starts. After, students head to the student section to watch their first game at NU students and show off some of those traditions, like true Wildcats. wilsonchapman2021@u.northwestern.edu

Primal Scream At the end of the quarter, Northwestern can get to be a stressful environment, Reading Period and Finals Week are especially hard times for many students. Primal Scream allows students to release some of that stress with a collective scream around campus at 9 p.m. the Sunday before Finals Week. While done mostly outside of the residence halls and libraries, some students have been known to scream in the middle of Periodicals, the silent part of Main Library. NU students do what they have to release a little stress and get ready to ace their 9 a.m. final the next morning.

The Fight Song Northwestern’s fight song, “Go! U Northwestern,” was written during the 1912 football season by alumnus Theodore Van Etten, a NU Marching Band member. The song was first performed during the final game of season and has found a place in almost every NU sports game since. At football games, the fight song is sung by the crowd after every touchdown

by Northwestern. New students will learn it during Wildcat Welcome to prepare for their first football game. Learn it by heart and be prepared to sing it loud when the Wildcats (hopefully) score a touchdown at the home games this season.

Northwestern is an often overwhelming place, and with about 8,000 undergraduates and countless student groups it can be easy to feel lost.

Here’s a rundown of just some of the NU spaces where you might go for support:

The Black House, 1914 Sheridan Rd. The Black House was founded in 1968 following the Bursar’s Office Takeover, in which students occupied the Northwestern Bursar’s Office and presented a list of demands to the

University. Among those demands was a space on campus for black students to call their own.

Since then, the Black House has served as “the social, cultural and educational hub” for black students, according to Northwestern magazine.

Religious spaces The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life oversees various interfaith programs and spiritual centers. Coming to college marks a significant change in every students’ lives. For many, it’s the first time living away from home for a long period of time and with it, comes freedom. It can be easy to get caught up in all the opportunities to let loose, but make sure to know the alcohol laws and University policies before drinking.

Everyone is different when it comes to their experience with alcohol. Whether you consider yourself a seasoned drinker or have never had a drink in your life, it’s important to understand the rules and the consequences that you will face if you violate them.

It is illegal to possess or consume alcohol in Illinois if you are under 21 years old. You’ve probably heard this one before, as it’s a national law, and NU is no exception.

During Wildcat Welcome, you will meet your resident assistant for your hallway or floor. They are there to help you out and advise you during your time in the residence halls. Under the University Code of Conduct you have to comply with any requests made

by University officials, which includes your RA. If your RA thinks you may be engaging in an illegal activity, such as drinking in your room, it’s reasonable for them to ask to come into your room.

Students under 21 may also face misconduct charges if they are found to be consuming alcohol, distributing alcohol to others under 21, having a container that previously held alcohol or manufacturing alcohol. Open containers are also not allowed on University property or in public spaces, like parking lots and sidewalks. If you are found in violation of the University policy on alcohol, and you are not 21 the consequences can vary from a written warning to expulsion.

For students over 21, you may store and consume alcohol in the privacy of your own room, as long as the only person under 21 present is your roommate and your room doesn’t exceed double occupancy. Alcohol is not allowed in any residence halls during Wildcat Welcome, regardless of how old a student is.

Having a fake I.D. or using a I.D. that is not your

own to purchase alcohol is a violation of University policy and Illinois state law and can be punishable by up to a year in jail and $2,500 in fines.

The University also has a policy to keep students safe in difficult situations. NU has an Amnesty through Responsible Action policy, in which students who call, stay and cooperate will not be found responsible for any “alcohol or other drug-related violations.”

In order for the policy to apply, the student who calls for help must stay until help arrives and cooperate with all responding staff. Both the student who calls and the student in need will not be found in violation of University policy if they agree to the “timely completion of any recommended assessment, educational assignment, and/or treatment.”

This may include BASICS, or Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students, a program that involves two 50-minute confidential sessions to discuss personal usage of alcohol and drugs.

The University Student Handbook outlines all alcohol and drug-related policies for students. Be sure to reference that handbook if you have any questions about the policies surrounding drinking so you can make decisions you are most comfortable with you arrive on campus. elizabethbyrne2020@u.northwestern.edu

When you come to Northwestern, be prepared to get a Facebook invite to a different performance every weekend. There are a number of performances on campus at all times, unsurprising given the school’s acclaimed theatre program. Even more impressive, the vast majority of these shows are run exclusively by students, who produce and direct everything.The sheer number of groups makes it hard to keep track of all of them, but here’s rundown of some of the biggest ones:

StuCo The majority of student theatre produced at Northwestern is produced by the Northwestern Student Theatre Coalition, a conglomerate group that provides support to the nine boards it services. These boards all focus on producing theatre of varying goals and genres, leading to a healthy diversity of theatre at NU. Like classics? Go watch a Lovers & Madmen show. Want to see a show for young audiences? Purple Crayon Players might be more for you. Whatever you want to watch, the StuCo boards at Northwestern will most likely be producing it.

First produced in 1929, The Waa-Mu Show is the oldest student theatre organization on campus. The show is something of a hybrid between student-run and professional-run, as it is directed by NU faculty, but is entirely written by the students. The writing process takes place over a variety of classes over the course of the year, involving a large group of students who contribute to the show.

The Dolphin Show The Dolphin Show advertises itself as the nation’s largest student-run musical, and it regularly produces classics in the musical theatre canon like “Ragtime” and “Hello, Dolly.” The show is almost 80 years old, and began as an aquatic show, hence the name.

The Mee-Ow Show What show were Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seth Meyers and Ana Gasteyer all a part of? Yes, Saturday Night Live, but also the Mee-Ow Show, one of the premier comedy groups on campus. The Mee-Ow Show puts on two shows during Winter Quarter, and features live music, improv games and sketch comedy during their performances.

The Titanic Players Love Mee-Ow but sad they don’t perform enough?

Luckily, there’s the Titanic Players, an improv group that performs once every month of the school year.The group specializes in long-form improv, and consists of four teams, one for each grade level, that perform during the shows.

At 14, there are a truly ridiculous amount of a Cappella groups on campus, so there is almost certainly one for everyone. Can’t-miss classes to take your first Fall Quarter

When waiting to come to Northwestern’s campus for the first time, choosing my Fall Quarter courses was the last thing on my mind — I was more worried about whether my bedding would match the color scheme my roommate and I picked out together. When it came time during Wildcat Welcome to choose my classes, I was overwhelmed by the choices as I scrolled through the seemingly endless choices on CAESAR. I ended up choosing classes that were OK, but not quite right for me. Don’t make the same mistake as me and read up on CTECS, a searchable index of reviews and ratings by previous students for every class at Northwestern.

CTECS will become your best friend.

If you’re looking for some well-known NU classes to tick off that seemingly-endless list of distributions or are looking for something new to study, check out these five classes approved by (most) Northwestern students.

Excerpt from CTECs: “This class really was a great start for me in taking an English class at Northwestern. Prof. Law is amazing and all of the TA’s for the discussion sections are absolutely incredible. I feel like this class would be a great start for anyone that has to do English courses.”

The Reality: If you’re not interested in delving into the depths of Dostoevsky in Russian Lit, try out this literature and fine arts distro course. Prof. Jules Law is very interactive during his lectures, despite their large size. The book selections are always classics like “Frankenstein” and “Jane Eyre.” Chances are you may have encountered these books in high school, but if you want a more detailed look into some classic novels, take this class. Prof. Law also

usually plays music before his lectures, which is a fun way to start a class.

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY (SOCIOL 110) Mean Rating 5.77 (out of 6) Professor: Mary Finch Excerpt from CTECs: “This course was much different than most other courses I’ve taken since most of the learning came from required readings (not from a text book) and group discussion during class. I felt it challenged me to think about different ideas and how certain decisions or other factors may influence how we operate as a society” The Reality: Even though beloved Sociology Prof. Craig Rawlings left NU in spring 2018,

INTRODUCTION TO RUSSIAN LITERATURE (SLAVIC 210-2) Mean Rating: 5.62 (out of 6) Professor: Gary Morson Excerpt from CTECs: “Professor Morson literally changes the way you see humanity and yourself and everyday decisions and actions. It’s hard to describe but I do feel like a different person after taking this class.”

The Reality: This is the perfect class for people who have to fulfill a literature and fine arts distro, but hate writing papers (looking at you McCormick students). Prof. Gary Morson has taught this class for years and it’s one of those “bucket list” classes that all NU students rave about. Like most Northwestern classes, there is a lot of reading each night, but Prof.

Morson will guide you to the important parts of the books in class.

INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY (PSYCH 110) Mean Rating: 5.60 (out of 6) Professor: Wendi Gardner Excerpt from CTECs: “Professor Gardner was an excellent instructor who very obviously is passionate about what she teaches. Attending class is important because she provides interesting examples in class for many of the psychology concepts, making them easier to remember.”

The Reality: Another introduction class, but if you’ve ever wondered about the inner workings of the human brain, this class may be for you. Weinberg Prof. Wendi Gardner taught this class last fall and while this class may seem scary because of the science involved, Gardner walks her students through the difficult concepts. Take this class if you’re looking to branch out of your comfort zone, or just need a social and behavioral science distro.

LANGUAGE AND SOCIETY (LING 220)

INTRODUCTION TO FICTION (ENGLISH 213) Mean Rating: 5.33 (out of 6) Professor: Jules Law

this class is a great introduction to a popular minor and major at Northwestern. If you’re looking for that traditional large lecture class with 200 of your closest friends, this is the course for you. While Prof. Mary Finch will be replacing Rawlings, her previous Sociology classes have received overall high CTEC ratings and she’s taught Sociology at NU for the past six years.

Mean Rating: 5.57 (out of 6) Professor: Annette D’onofrio Excerpt from CTECs: “This course is very interesting and (the) Prof is really good at filling the time so, although it’s a long lecturestyle class, it almost never drags.”

The Reality: While this class is a social and behavioral science distro, the Linguistics Department is a great place to get some of your natural science distros out of the way, without having to be in a lab. Though linguistics seems pretty abstract, it can be mind-blowing to discover why you speak a certain way or why you use certain words to describe things. An Evanston transit guide

Though it can seem overwhelming, navigating the transit around Evanston and Chicago is fairly simple with a Wildcard and a Ventra card. The options range from the the free Northwestern-run shuttle buses to the L and the Metra, Chicago trains with stops right by campus.

Northwestern Shuttles Northwestern has a variety of shuttle buses to get you where you need to go quickly, and the best part: they’re free as long as you show your Wildcard. Download the app DoubleMap so you can track the buses and plan ahead.

Evanston Loop: The Evanston Loop shuttle bus typically begins running at 6 p.m. and services many areas throughout campus and the more residential areas of the city. When there is extreme weather, such as single-digit temperatures, the Evanston Loop will run all day.

Campus Loop: Similar to the Evanston Loop, the Campus Loop bus runs every night, beginning at 9 p.m. in the fall and spring and 6 p.m. in the winter. The Campus Loop stops running at 3 a.m. and goes from the north side of campus all the way south in both directions, perfect for taking after a long night in the library.

Intercampus: The Intercampus Shuttle connects Northwestern’s Evanston and Chicago campuses.

It runs regularly throughout the day and provides students with a free and easy way of getting into the city. The Intercampus stops in Chicago just north of the Loop, and has various stops throughout Evanston.

Public Buses CTA 201 Bus: The CTA 201 bus is a free and easy way to get around Evanston during the day.

It runs regularly and has stops wherever you need to go on campus or in the city — whether you live on South Campus and are running late for your lab in Tech, or need to make a quick trip to Old Orchard Mall in Skokie.

Pace 250 Bus: This bus is the best option for getting to O’Hare International Airport if you’re not quite ready to dish out upwards of $40 for an Uber or spend over an hour on the train. It’s only $2 a ride, and runs out of the Davis CTA stop just south of campus.

The L The L — a shortened form of “the elevated” — is Chicago’s subway system. With eight train lines, it can get you pretty much anywhere in Chicago and is an effective (if slow) way to explore the city. One way trips cost $2.50, and make sure to get a Ventra card early on. Download the app and instantly add value to the card to make traveling much easier.

Purple Line: The Purple Line train services Evanston and has various stops close to campus.

The Davis stop is just south of campus, Foster is right about in the middle near a lot of off campus housing, and Noyes is on the north end, a short walk from the Technological Institute. On weekdays, the Purple Line express runs, skipping many of the smaller stops in Chicago and taking commuters straight into the Chicago Loop.

Red Line: The Red Line connects with the Purple Line at the Howard Street stop, and is typically the best way to get into downtown Chicago. It has various notable stops, from Addison (the closest to Wrigley Field) to Chicago (right by Navy Pier). The Red Line runs all the way through the city to 95th Street.

Metra The Metra is a slightly more expensive and faster train that will take you into downtown Chicago. The Union Pacific North line has a station at Davis Street in Evanston and runs to the Ogilvie Transportation Center, with stops in the northern neighborhoods of Chicago. Students can also take the line to the northern suburbs of Chicago and even as far as Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Tickets to the city cost around $5 and can be bought on the Ventra app or at the Davis Street station.

Safe Ride Safe Ride is a free ride sharing service available to students from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., seven days a week during the academic year. Though often unpredictable and slow, Safe Ride’s are a good alternative to walking home alone at night, especially in the winter. In January, the Undergraduate Residential Experience Committee released a report outlining a new neighborhood plan for all on-campus residences.

The committee, made up of NU students, faculty and staff, suggested dividing the residence halls into different “neighborhoods” that would allow all residents in that area access to shared spaces, facilities and programming. Some of these perks would include access to dorm-specific lounges, gyms and study spaces. While not fully realized yet, this neighborhood proposal is something to watch in the future.

members of fraternities or sororities with houses on campus, they may live in the affiliated houses their second year. For unaffiliated students, they will go through the housing selection process again in the spring, where students can select a new residence hall and roommates.

The Master Plan

Northwestern is in the middle of executing their Housing Master plan. The plan, which is projected to be completed in Fall 2025, includes building new residence halls and doing full renovations to existing residential halls. In the four years the class of 2022 will be at NU, however, not much will change. 1835 Hinman, which closed Winter Quarter 2018, will be replaced by a new dorm, 1830 Sheridan in 2022. Jones Residential College, which closed in Fall 2017, is under renovation and will also reopen in 2022 with 1830 Sheridan.

Northwestern’s newest dorms are 560 Lincoln and Willard Hall. Willard, which opened in January, is a residential college located on south campus, while 560 Lincoln is a north campus residence hall. Both dorms have different styles of living: 560 Lincoln is suite-style, with all suites sharing a single bathroom, and Willard features large single, double and triple rooms.

Willard, as a residential college, will hold events throughout the academic year where students earn points for housing the following year and interact with students in their dorm. It can create a smaller community within the larger Northwestern campus. 560 Lincoln, while not a residential college, also offers programming for its students and has large lounges where residents can hang out with friends instead of in their suites. While freshmen have already chosen their housing for the 201819 academic year, these two new residence halls are popular choices, so it might be time to start strategizing for next year.

History 210-1: American History Precolonial to the Civil War with Professor Caitlin Fitz Explore the major themes of early American history, from the first encounters between native people, Europeans, and Africans to the impassioned battles of the Civil War. Our goal will be to track the variety of meanings that America had for the people who lived here: men and women, rich and poor, free and slave.

History 250-2 Global History II with Professor Daniel Immerwahr This course offers an introduction to the main episodes and themes in modern history. Unlike other history classes, however, the focus will be not on a particular region or nation, but on the planet, taken as a whole. That broad scope will allow us to better understand large-scale phenomena such as empire, industrial technology, communism, the two world wars, HIV/AIDS, and globalization.

There are no prerequisites.

History 270-0 Middle Eastern/Islamic Civilization with Professor Carl Petry The course will consider the cultural and religious traditions of the Middle East in their historical contexts from the beginning of the Islamic Era (sixth century C.E.). Rather than tracing specific political events, the course will focus on the three major social groups in the Middle East: nomads, peasants and townspeople.

International student enrollment slows in 2018

Northwestern’s international student population continues to rise, despite fears by higher education officials that immigration rhetoric could drive away foreign interest and access to American schools.

But any applause may be premature, as growth in the percentage of international students has come to a sluggish slowdown.

The most recent data, published by the International Office, show that the chunk of international students rose just under one percentage point during the past two academic years.That figure had been rising about three percent in the years leading up to the slump, from 2012 to 2015.

Some might point to the hostile rhetoric of then-candidate Donald Trump as cause for the deceleration. That might have caused an initial shock in 2016, but the 2017 data show the rate beginning to pick back up.

Still, the Trump administration has posed additional barriers for foreigners hoping to study in the United States. In June, the State Department implemented stronger visa restrictions for Chinese graduate students studying some technology and science fields. The University draws most of its international students from China.

Another measure heightened student visa

restrictions by cracking down on overstays. The move changed the requirements for unlawful presence accrual, making it easier to find an individual in violation of visa and impose a ban from the U.S. The Supreme Court has also weighed in on student visas, upholding in June Trump’s third revision of the travel ban. The ruling threatens the already-declining number of student visas issued by the government.

Ravi Shankar is the director of the International Office, whose job is to advise and support international students. He told The Daily in May that the office has been reviewing the new policies and offering new guidance to students.

“We need to make sure that we support and take care of our students, but at the same time being mindful of the fact that this has some potential impact on our research and teaching mission,” he said.

Students from abroad wanting to study in an American school must go through an extensive visa process, which includes an interview with a government official and background check — on top of Northwestern’s own admission process.

Those who want to stay in the country after graduation often face tougher obstacles when they apply for a work visa. In recent years, the acceptance rate for work visas like H-1B have dramatically declined, increasing the competition and uncertainty around the program. alanperez2020@u.northwestern.edu

International student advice from Daily staffers

As international students, our first year at Northwestern was like a tart filled with multiple flavors. As much as we cherished the sweet, there was bitterness as well. Having survived the inclement weather in Evanston, the taxing quarter system and perplexing social life, we want to offer incoming international Wildcats a breakdown of some of the ingredients.

Northwestern frequently prides itself on campus diversity and global perspective, but let’s be honest: the struggles faced by international students are real. One aspect we wish we had acknowledged beforehand was the rigorous academic atmosphere, featuring the “flash” quarter system. A lot of our American peers also found this difficult, yet the challenge seemed to double when we found ourselves acquiring the knowledge, the language, the culture all at once. This structure made the exams feel like quizzes and quizzes feel like lectures, but staying proactive and ahead of the schedule is the key to handle the pace. Yet we realized NU quarter system truly allowed us to widen our horizons, to try out a variety of fields that the schools in our countries would not offer over the course of a year.

In fact, we could have done better at selecting our classes for each quarter so that we didn’t end up dropping quite a few. The process would have involved more thorough research using CTECs or counseling with our academic advisors. We never had to pick among so many courses, as the curriculum is usually fixed back home; and frankly, it was overwhelming. We wish we had funneled more time and effort into our “class shopping cart,” simply by asking the upperclassmen or posting in our group chat for recommendations. Don’t shy away, because at the end of the day everyone would so love to help.

Another bump in the road must have been the cost of materials. It’s shocking to find out how much textbooks and other school supplies could add up in the U.S, since those back home are always incredibly cheap. This is where the Interlibrary loan jumps in. Thanks to numerous

libraries and institutions Northwestern partners with, we were able to get the materials for most of the classes for free. We heard about Interlibrary service from an email the school sent out during the summer, so we do suggest keeping up with your mailbox.

In addition to nostalgia and language barriers about which have been so thoroughly discussed, another challenge we had spent so much time coping with is the division within the international community itself. While some students try to fit in the quintessential American narrative by devaluing their cultures, there are also students who close their friend groups and interact only with those from the same country.

Our advice to this dilemma is to find a balance between blending into the new society

and preserving your cultural roots. Instead of judging you for owning a distinct culture, most of your fellow freshmen are eager to learn about the history and traditions of another country.

Similarly, you have the inalienable right to go wild and socialize with other Wildcats if you are in a party mood on Friday night. Just let yourself be challenged by diverse experiences and trust us, you will grow and thrive.

A series of changes to visa policy has made 2018 a bittersweet year for students hoping to stay in the US after graduation: while the Trump administration tightened legal immigration, Economics was now classified as a STEM major for NU students. The uncertainty regarding employment prospects highlights the importance for international students to better utilize resources offered by NU, including

career counseling and internship programs.

Consequently, we strongly recommend international students to talk to your academic advisor or Northwestern Career Advancement counselors and to draft a preliminary schedule that satisfies both your major requirement and leaves some wiggle room for internship and job searching. In addition, NU also provides an array of networking opportunities, such as the Northwestern Externship Program (NEXT), for students who want to explore a professional field by working alongside NU alums.

Reading Week can be your best friend or your worst enemy Reading Period is a week given to NU students to help them catch-up and prepare for the upcoming Finals Week. As you already may have realized, Northwestern operates on the quarter system, where professors have to cram a semester’s worth of material into 10 weeks. Reading Period allows you to take a breather and go back on that reading for English you skipped during week five because you had a Linguistics midterm the next day. Whatever it may be, take advantage of the few days of no class and you’ll be ahead of the game. If you’re not a student in Weinberg, you won’t have the full Reading Period off, as other schools still hold class. Reading Period can also be trouble because your schedule will feel wide open and it can be tempting to take a break from work and not actually study. Take advantage of the free time to get some extra sleep or hang out with friends, but don’t forget about the final exams or projects looming in the future.

Get some sleep As tempting as it may be to pull an all-nighter before your cumulative Statistics final, resist it.

You will most likely feel hazy and tired during the final and it could show in your final exam grade. Some people have perfected the art of allnighters, but if you’re trying to do it for the first time before a final, it may not turn out exactly how you expected. Instead, get at least six hours of sleep before your final. You’ll wake up feeling mamammamjfjjfjfjfjf jajajajajaja

While 2 a.m. Insomnia Cookie deliveries are delicious, maybe think twice before indulging.

Reading and Finals Weeks are when NU students are the most exhausted and most prone to get sick. You don’t want to be that kid in your Econ final sniffling the whole time, so make sure to take care of yourself and your body. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, even when the salad bar in the dining hall looks less than appetizing. You may feel more energized and ready to take on Finals Week sniffle-free.

Start preparing early Every student works at a different pace. However, you will never feel bad about starting early on a final exam study guide or outlining a final paper. Should you start worrying about your final exam during the first week of classes? Absolutely not, but if you’re in a class with a cumulative final, start compiling your notes in one place so you can come back to them during Reading Period.

Having all your notes and thoughts in one place is a little step that will help you feel ahead of the game when you’re stressing in the few days before your exam.

Follow your own schedule Don’t fall into the trap of prioritizing studying with your friends over your own studying. I would often wait to study with friends instead of taking the time to do it myself, and would fall behind as a result. It can be helpful to study in groups for final exams, especially if you’re in the same class, but make sure to give yourself time to prioritize your classes and your own wellbeing.

Remember, Northwestern is not all about academics. While Finals Week can feel like the make or break point of your college career, it’s just one week. If you prepare and set yourself up for success, then your first Finals Week will be a breeze. elizabethbyrne2020@u.northwestern.edu

Northwestern looks to build on past successes

Northwestern lacrosse has been a powerhouse program for years, appearing in every NCAA tournament since 2004. Although the Cats lost in the quarterfinals to North Carolina this year and have not been to the NCAA Tournament Final Four since 2014, NU has the pieces to compete and return in 2019.

Three of the Cats four top scorers from 2018 have graduated.The only top scorer remaining from last year is attacker Selena Lasota. She was the leading goals and points scorer in the Big

Ten with 75 and 93, respectively. Regardless of her amazing offensive ability, she will get more help from returning starters like Megan Kinna and Holly Korn.

Defensively, the Cats can rely on their goalie Julie Krupnick, who started every game for the Cats last year. Krupnick allowed 11.77 goals per game and helped lead NU to 15 wins during the 2018 season. Even with the departures of Ally Mueller and Lindsay Darrell, the Cats have experienced returning defenders like Ally Palermo and Megan Gordon who will guide NU’s defense.

Cats poised to be nat’l champions

If there is one team at Northwestern most likely to win the school’s ninth NCAA National Championship next year, it’s the women’s golf team.

That is not to say it’s likely. Golf is notoriously unpredictable, winning a national championship is hard and the Wildcats have never done it before.

But they have been to the national finals and quarterfinals the last two seasons, they’re bringing back three of the five golfers who pushed Stanford to the final hole of match play last year and they have coach Emily Fletcher, who has turned the program into a national powerhouse.

Stephanie Lau, Janet Mao and Brooke Riley are the three returning stars from last year’s quarterfinal team.

Lau and Mao each played in the 2016-17 National Championship Final, in which NU fell 3-1-1 in match play to Arizona State.

For the first time in a few years, however, the Cats face a possible transition year. Hannah Kim, the best women’s golfer in NU history, and Sarah Cho, another four-year star, each graduated in the spring, leaving two holes in the Cats’ five person lineup.

Obviously, it won’t be easy to replace Kim and Cho in the lineup, but between a deep bench and a recruiting class that athletic director Jim Phillips was high on, NU could very well return to the match play tournament in 2018-19. josephwilkinson2019@u.northwestern.edu

Wildcats continue to build program

Northwestern’s men’s golf had an awe-inspiring run last season and looks to continue building the program’s legacy entering the 2018-2019 academic year.

Even with a mixed bag of Fall and Winter Quarters, the Wildcats demonstrated their strength with stars like then-seniors Dylan Wu and Sam Triplett leading them to victory time and time again. Not only did the Cats assert dominance against in-state rival No. 11 Illinois the team made its first NCAA championship appearance since 2011. The Cats were forced to bounce back after two players resigned from the team due to legal issues in the middle of the season.

Now with Wu and Triplett graduated, and with Wu moving onto a professional career, the team will need to do some rebuilding. Luckily, with juniors like Ryan Lumsden, who was in first place at the end of day one of the NCAA Championships, the team may not have to look far for its next leader. Lumsden participated in the U.S. Open in June, joining three other Wildcat amateurs to play in the Open in the past 30 years.

Look to this team for some year-round excitement, with the possibility of another tournament run not a far reach at all for this perennially-stellar squad. sophiemann2018@u.northwestern.edu

Northwestern is looking to make the leap from good to great in 2018-19, but it will be tough with multiple key contributors graduating.

The Wildcats are certainly good. They made NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. They won eight games against ranked opponents and went 15-7 against a brutally tough schedule.

But they couldn’t take down the best of the best, losing three separate times to Michigan, falling at then-No.3 Penn State and getting smacked 7-0 by eventual national champions Connecticut.

Leading that push to the next level will be senior midfielder Puck Pentenga, an outright star and

First-Team All-Big Ten player who scored 11 goals and had 17 assists last season, good for the fourthmost assists per game in the country.

She’ll have support from fellow senior midfielder Eva van Agt, who had six goals in 2017-18 and made an impact on both ends of the field, and junior defender Kirsten Mansfield, a lockdown defender who is also a goal-scoring threat on penalty corners.

Not everyone is back, however. First-Team AllBig Ten defender Sophia Miller graduated, leaving Mansfield as the only remaining defender on the roster with consistent top-level experience. The team’s leading scorer, forward Pascale Massey, also graduated, and while junior forward Saar de Breij has shown promise up front, NU and coach Tracey Fuchs will need previously unheralded players to step up to equal last year’s performance. josephwilkinson2019@u.northwestern.edu

Before 2015, Northwestern had not qualified for the NCAA Tournament since 1998. Now, the Wildcats will look to make it for the fourth consecutive year, having compiled a record of 42-17-9 from 2015 to 2017.

Last year, the Cats entered conference play just 3-3-1, and early struggles in Big Ten play took NU out of title contention. But the Cats won their last four regular season games, all shutouts, to finish tied for second with Minnesota.

The team then advanced to the final of the Big Ten Tournament before falling to Penn State. In the NCAA Tournament, the Cats beat Butler

in penalty kicks in the first round, then took No. 2 UCLA to overtime before seeing their season end.

NU was led by senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem, who allowed less than a goal per game and posted 11 shutouts. Clem will be missed, but the Cats will return plenty of offensive firepower to compensate.

Of the 24 goals NU scored in 2017, just two came from seniors. Brenna Lovera, Kayla Sharples, Michele Chernesky, Marisa Viggiano and Hannah Davison — all now seniors — led the scoring with a combined 14 goals last season.

Fencing retains top players Sophomore Katsiyiannis to continue successful run to lead Cats next season

Northwestern fencing had one of the best seasons in school history last year and looks poised to have a campaign just as successful this upcoming year.

Zach Moss’ Wildcats finished the 2017-18 season with a school-record 47 victories, a Midwest Fencing Conference championship and three All-Americans. In addition, the team won 25 matches in a row during the season, another school record.

NU will have almost all of its best fencers

returning for the 2018-19 year. All three AllAmericans — senior foil Yvonne Chart, junior epee Pauline Hamilton and sophomore foil Sarah Filby — are back for another year. Emine Yücel, the MFC champion in sabre, has another year of eligibility left. In total, of the 19 All-MFC selections, only three were seniors last season.

The Cats will not only have fencers competing for NU during the season, but also for their national teams. In this past April alone, sophomore sabre Alexis Browne won a World Cup event in Iceland, while Filby was seeded eighth in the U20 Foil elimination tournament at the Junior World Championships. peterwarren2021@u.northwestern.edu

After a series of rebuilding years, NU’s outlook is finally looking up in 2018.

The men’s soccer team scored just 22 goals in the entire 2017 season and went 7-12-0, falling in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament to top-seeded Michigan. But there are two reasons for optimism: the Cats actually won five of their last eight matches of the season, demonstrating the improvement of a young roster, and all five players who scored multiple goals last season will return this fall.

last season’s breakout star with seven goals and 31 shots, along with junior forwards Mac Mazzola and Ty Seager will head NU’s attack.

A pair of seniors — Camden Buescher and John Moderwell — will anchor the midfield and defense, respectively, while senior Robbie White looks to have a tentative hold on the starting goalkeeper job.

Katsiyiannis, Mazzola, Seager and Buescher, along with junior Sean Lynch, led the scoring last season with a combined 18 goals.

Cats look to continue 20year success under Pollard

NU’s most dominant program over the past decade enters a new era in 2018-19 following the departure of a trio of impact-making seniors: Erin Larner, Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt. Larner and Lipp, in particular, composed a nearly unbeatable doubles team, played in the top three singles and helped the Cats roll through the Big Ten schedule undefeated last spring.

Coach Claire Pollard, who has led NU to 20 straight seasons with a conference record of 8-2 or better, will have her work cut out to keep that incredible run alive.

With all 9 Wildcats returning from last year’s team, NU (9-17, 4-7 Big Ten) is looking to change its trajectory this season and hopefully use the continuity for growth.

Nick Brookes returns for his second season after a breakout first year in the No. 2 seed for singles. The Weinberg sophomore finished his first campaign with NU with a team-high 11 wins in dual competition and received the Sportsmanship Award for NU. The No.1 seed is Dominik Stary, who will return for his third year hoping to continue his success. Stary was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive season.

Football has high hopes despite tough schedule

Despite uncertainty at the quarterback position — three-year starter Clayton Thorson is coming off a December ACL tear, and backups Andrew Marty and Aidan Smith have no collegiate experience — Northwestern football enters 2018 with fairly high expectations.

Coming off their third 10-win season in six years, the Wildcats return the vast majority of a defense that ranked in the top 20 nationally in points allowed per game. Sophomore linebacker Paddy Fisher, the 2017 Big Ten defensive freshman of the year, and junior defensive end Joe

Gaziano will be the stars of the group.

On offense, NU has improved substantially both at wide receiver and on the offensive line, two former areas of concern. Sophomore running back Jeremy Larkin, coming off an impressive debut season, will be tasked with filling the shoes of departed stalwart Justin Jackson. Thorson’s health, nonetheless, remains the key X-factor for the Cats’ offensive outlook.

McKeown looks to continue building women’s program

Northwestern had more than its fair share of struggles in 2017-18. The Wildcats won only four conference games and finished the season 12-20, their worst record since 2008-09, coach Joe McKeown’s first year on the job.

However, this team has the foundations of being a decent contender in the Big Ten. Senior forward Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah is an absolute tank down low: She averaged 11 points and nearly 12 rebounds per game last season and was named Second Team All-Big Ten. The team is also stacked with young, exciting guards. Lindsey Pulliam led the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game last year as

a freshman and was named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team. Fellow freshman Jordan Hamilton shot 36 percent from the 3-point range and dropped 4.6 dimes per game.

They’ll be joined by newly healthy guard Lauryn Satterwhite, who was a three-star recruit but missed all of last season with a lower-body injury, and guard Sydney Wood, the No. 87 recruit in the country, according to ESPNW. Additionally, redshirt senior forward Amber Jamison is set to return to the team after taking a leave of absence last season, and NU’s secondleading scorer, junior forward Abi Scheid, will be back for her junior year looking to build on the 12 points and 4.8 rebounds per game she averaged last year. josephwilkinson2019@u.northwestern.edu

After the highs of the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017 and the lows of a disastrous and roundly disappointing 2017-18 season, Northwestern is looking at an upcoming transition year.

With leading scorers Bryant McIntosh and Scottie Lindsey graduating, the only remaining major contributors from the curse-breaking 2016-17 team are senior forward Vic Law and senior center Dererk Pardon.

Replacing the iconic backcourt duo will be the best recruiting class in Wildcats history, headlined by two four-star recruits — forward Pete Nance, the best recruit in NU history according to 247sports, and guard Miller Kopp, the third-best recruit — along with three-star forward Ryan Young and reclassified

guard Ryan Greer.

Greer was a late addition to the class, replacing four-star point guard Jordan Lathon, whose admission to the university was revoked May 25.

The freshmen aren’t the only new arrivals, however, as shoot-first guard Ryan Taylor joins the squad as a grad transfer from Evansville, while redshirt junior forward A.J. Turner will see his first game action at NU after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Taylor took a higher percentage of his team’s shots than any other player in the country last year.

One constant will be coach Chris Collins. Since his arrival at Northwestern, Collins’ teams have played at a slow pace, characterized by methodical half-court offense and largely sound defense that limits fast-break opportunities. Wildcats maintain hope for upcoming season with young team

After an up-and-down 2017 season, head coach Shane Davis and Northwestern volleyball will hope for a more consistent 2018 campaign.

One of the storylines that will define the Wildcats this fall is experience. Thirteen of the 17 players on the roster are underclassman and there are no seniors.

Even though the team is inexperienced, there is plenty of talent. PrepVolleyball.com

ranks the incoming freshman class No. 18 in the country and features top-100 recruits in outside hitters Abryanna Cannon and Hanna Lesiak.

Four players with over 30 games played return from last year’s team, including sophomore outside hitter Nia Robinson and sophomore middle hitter Alana Walker. Robinson averaged 3.46 kills per set in her first season in Evanston and was named to the 2017 AllBig Ten Freshman Team, while Walker started every match and had an hitting percentage of .297.

Coach Haynes looks to improve performance after ninth place finish

Then-sophomore Aubrey Roberts had Northwestern’s best time at last season’s NCAA regionals and qualified for nationals as an individual, but the team finished ninth, well short of the top-two finish required to advance in the team competition. This year, coach ‘A Havahla Haynes’ team will have a chance to improve on that performance.

The graduation of second-fastest finisher Isabel Seidel will hurt, but the return of junior Sarah Nicholson should give the Cats hope of a better finish this year.

NU competes in the team cross country season each fall before transitioning to competition in the long-distance events of indoor and outdoor track in the winter and spring.

During the fall, NCAA women’s cross country competes in 6K races and the Cats’ season has typically kicked off with a meet in late August or early September.

Softball program leaps forward following spring success

Between 2005 and 2008, Northwestern won two Big Ten championships, made it to the NCAA Super Regionals four times and the Women’s College World Series twice.

The Wildcats have not done any of those things since, but took a big step forward in 2018. NU finished 38-19 and advanced to the final of both the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA Athens Regional.

The Cats’ success was keyed by a huge power surge. NU hit 47 home runs in 2018, compared to 14 the year before. Rising sophomore Rachel Lewis hit 17 homers, while rising senior Morgan Nelson added 13.

The pitching suffered from an early injury to rising senior Kaley Winegarner, but rising sophomore Kenna Wilkey and rising junior Morgan Newport stepped up and formed a formidable combination in the circle. Both will be back next year, and they’ll be joined by a returning Winegarner as well as top recruit Danielle Williams.

A strong senior class will be missed, but the Cats will welcome the 9th-ranked incoming class to campus this year. The rising sophomores, along with key returners such as Lewis, Nelson and Wilkey, should help NU have another strong season and contend for their first conference title in 11 years.

WRESTLING

Deakin, Rivera, Sebastian to continue leading Cats in 2018

Northwestern wrestling is on the rise.

Last season was one of growth as the Wildcats finished in 10th overall at Big Ten Championships with five Cats finishing in the top eight in their respective weight classes.

The powerful trio of Ryan Deakin, Sebastian Rivera and Johnny Sebastian lead NU (11-4, 5-4 Big Ten) last season, with a notable 22-year-drought ending win against Minnesota.

Rivera, in the 125-pound weight class, finished fifth at Big Ten Championships and sixth at NCAA Championships. Deakin, at 149-pounds, clinched sixth at Big Ten Championships, and went 8-1 in Big Ten dual competition.

Sebastian finished last season with a personal best at the Big Ten Championships, nabbing fourth for the 174-pound weight class.

The Cats welcome seven new recruits, the No. 14 best in the nation for a recruiting class, for this upcoming season as NU aims for success in one of the toughest conferences in the nation.

BASEBALL

After another tough season, baseball seeks redemption

After being one game away from clinching a Big Ten Tournament title in 2017, Northwestern had another bad year. The Cats (17-32, 6-18 Big Ten) finished second-to-last in the Big Ten and haven’t had a winning season since 2000.

One of the few bright spots on NU’s team was SS Jack Dunn. Dunn led the team in batting average (.314), on base percentage (.399) and stolen bases (21). Besides Dunn, the Cats only

had three other players who batted over .275 last season and in order to have success moving forward, NU will need more players to produce and drive in runs.

The Cats pitching struggled last year as well, posting a team ERA of 6.20. Although the numbers weren’t great last year, NU’s pitching staff is very young and they have a lot of time to grow and improve next year and moving forward. There isn’t much to look forward to when it comes to Northwestern baseball, but they could gain experience this year and compete in a couple of years.

New Welsh-Ryan Arena to open in November

A year and a half after beginning renovations on Welsh-Ryan Arena, Northwestern’s arena for basketball, volleyball and wrestling, the revamped facility is set to debut this fall to much fanfare.

The “old” Welsh-Ryan, built in 1953 and last updated in 1983, was a grungy, dark, cramped testament to NU’s history as a school that put athletics on a decidedly low pedestal.

The “new” Welsh-Ryan will conversely create a modern, raucous environment for Cats’ basketball games. Men’s basketball coach Chris Collins has said he expects the new arena to provide a uniquely intimate fanhood experience — in the vein of Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium or Butler’s Hinkle Fieldhouse — that will stand in contrast to the sprawling, NBA-like stadiums of many of the other teams in the conference.

Some elements of the original arena will remain, such as the concrete exterior walls and

the dual student sections on both ends of the court (although the north side is generally considered the more popular and rowdy one). But plenty of new aspects will also be included, such as expanded and upgraded concourses, seat backs, new bathrooms, more suites and dynamic lighting — the old arena infamously could not turn off lights for player introductions.

The experience will be better for the athletes themselves, who will have new locker rooms and no longer have to, in the words of Collins, “walk through the concessions line” to get to the court.

A “soft opening” for the arena is planned for the first weekend of November, when the men’s basketball team will face a to-be-determined Division II squad in an exhibition game the Friday night before the much-anticipated Notre Dame football game. The volleyball team is scheduled to play its final four home games there, starting Nov. 9 against Penn State, and men’s and women’s basketball will take up permanent residence with their home openers in the middle of the month. benjaminpope2019@u.northwestern.edu

$265 million athletic center opens on lakefront

A $265 million investment into a new on-campus practice facility for athletes, dedicated almost three years ago in the face of much controversy, has paid off for Northwestern — or at least accomplished its primary goal.

The beautiful, glassy, lakefront Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletics Center on the north end of campus has already drawn national sports media attention, garnering overflowing — arguably excessive — hype and praise from the likes of Yahoo Sports and The Athletic. That kind of attention will make the new facilities a huge draw for football recruiting, which was always one of the biggest motivators behind the decision to build such a behemoth, even if the school will never officially admit so.

But the new facilities will undeniably also offer a much more accessible, modern and comparable-toother-major-programs experience for current NU athletes, who won’t have to travel the 1.5 miles through Evanston to the Ryan Field/Welsh-Ryan Arena area for all of their practices.

Ryan Fieldhouse, a massive indoor football field, already debuted in April for one singular spring

practice. The rest of the building, classified the Walter Athletics Center, officially opened on Aug. 1.

The center focuses primarily on the football team, with a brand new locker room, private team lounge and separate weight room. Other amenities include additional meeting rooms, a brand new auditorium for team meetings and a equipment center specifically for football.

Some of the new amenities for other NU teams include private lounges and locker rooms, an academic center with private tutoring rooms and a dining area that overlooks Lake Michigan.

The center also includes two new indoor basketball courts, an indoor soccer court and an indoor track to replace the space torn down to build Ryan Fieldhouse. All NU students will have access to the courts through the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, but will not have access to the other amenities in the Walter Athletics Center.

The general student body will supposedly be able to take advantage of the building, as well. The football field and cluster of basketball courts can accommodate intramural games, and the venue will be used to host non-athletic events occasionally, exemplified by CommFest — a three-day, star-studded gathering headlined by Stephen Colbert — this past spring. benjaminpope2019@u.northwestern.edu

Golden: Law will be first player drafted since 1999

1999. That was the last time a Northwestern basketball player was drafted. I wasn’t born yet, and you probably weren’t either.

Evan Eschmeyer was taken in the 2nd round of the NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets and, since then, the Wildcats have endured a 19-year drought of drafts without one of their names being called. I think that will change in 2019.

Vic Law, a redshirt senior, is the highestrated recruit in the Chris Collins era. Although he hasn’t put up monster numbers so far in his career, he has been a solid role player for NU. Over the last two seasons, Law has averaged 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds. While these are good stats, he has the potential to blossom into one of the best players in the Big Ten and turn himself into a legitimate draft prospect.

Last year, Bryant McIntosh and Scottie Lindsey were considered the main scoring options for the Cats. The two guards combined to average 27 of NU’s 68.8 points. With both of them graduating, Law will become the primary option offensively.

Law was second on the team in scoring last year, despite missing five games due to injury.

When healthy, he showed that he could be an offensive threat, scoring 30 points against Creighton, 21 points against Michigan State and 18

against Penn State and Minnesota.

Although Law’s stats last year were very similar to his sophomore year, his free throw percentage increase from 74 percent to 82 percent, an indicator that he will be a more consistent shooter.

If Law could increase his two-point field goal percentage to 48 percent or higher, he would be more intriguing to NBA teams.

Another aspect to Law’s game is that he fits the NBA’s, “3-and-D,” prototype. Many NBA players have thrived in their roles as a player who shoots three pointers well and plays physical defense. Players like Trevor Ariza, Avery Bradley, Danny Green and even Klay Thompson have made a niche in the NBA as, “3-and-D,” players. For his career, Law has shot 38.4 percent from the three-point line and, with another year in college, that number could get even higher.

Defensively, Law has the size of a small forward who can defend at the next level. At 6’7” with a longer wingspan, he can matchup against small forwards and power forwards in smaller lineups. Law might need to put on some weight to keep up with the wear and tear of the NBA, but he will have this summer to lift and get stronger before next season.

Vic Law will have to prove next season that he can be the go-to scorer when the Cats need a bucket. If he become a better scorer and continue to be a solid perimeter defender, NU’s NBA Draft drought will end in 2019. andrewgolden2021 @u.northwestern.edu

After a disappointing 2018 season, Northwestern basketball is looking to bounce back in 2019. Senior Vic Law could be a major reason why the Wildcats return to the NCAA Tournament. Although Law had injuries last season, he improved as a defender and showed that he could be a primary scorer, dropping 15 or more points in 8 of the 27 games he played in. With Scottie Lindsey and Bryant McIntosh graduating, NU will turn to Law to score more. NU’s success will rely on Law’s ability to lead a young team with lots of talent and potential, but not a lot of experience.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

RACHEL LEWIS SECOND BASE | 11 The Northwestern softball team had a 13-win improvement from 2017 to 2018, due to, in part, the rise of Rachel Lewis. As a freshman, she led the team in home runs, while leading the Big Ten in runs scored and RBIs. She helped Northwestern’s offense thrive as they were ranked third in the Big Ten in batting average and second in runs scored.

She was also named an All-American and was unanimously chosen on the All-Big Ten first team. Lewis left her mark last year as one of the best players in the country and should be a player to watch next year.

JEREMY LARKIN RUNNING BACK | 28

After the departure of Justin Jackson, Northwestern running backs have big shoes to fill. Jackson is the Wildcats leader in rushing yards (5,440), rushing attempts (1,142) and rushing touchdowns (41). After being the primary backup running back to Jackson last season, Jeremy Larkin looks ready to take over as the starting running back this year. Larkin showed flashes of speed, footwork and vision last season, averaging 6 yards per carry and scored 5 touchdowns last season. With Clayton Thorson coming off of a torn ACL, Larkin has the potential to carry the load offensively and lead Northwestern to a Big Ten West title.

OLIVIA ROSENDAHL DIVER

Olivia Rosendahl is one of the most accomplished athletes in Northwestern’s history.

Rosendahl won her second-straight NCAA championship in platform diving in 2018. She also became Northwestern’s first Big Ten Diver of the year, along with being an All-American in 1-meter and platform diving. These accomplishments alone explain just how great of a diver she is. The scariest part for opponents is that she still has one more year of eligibility and Rosendahl is definitely an athlete to keep an eye on as she tries to win three straight platform diving titles.
