Letter from the Editor: Tyler Pager For most of my college career, my life revolved around 5:30 p.m. From that point forward, the rest of my night would be devoted to producing the next day’s newspaper. Whether I left at midnight (rarely) or after 3 a.m. was unclear, but my departure time did not matter. Rather, the hours I spent on the third floor of Norris each night gave me an incredible window into Northwestern.

As the paper of record, we chronicled Northwestern at its best moments and its most trying moments. In this pursuit, we had the privilege of speaking with — and learning from — our brilliant peers and professors. We wrote about your accomplishments, your challenges and your impact. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us and allowing us to tell your stories.

Through my work at The Daily, I have been most inspired by my peers’ enduring commitment to making Northwestern a better place.

That activism manifested in many forms, but many of you have spent a remarkable amount of time trying to improve this community. It may not have always yielded the results you had hoped for, but those efforts did not go unnoticed.

Thus, I hope each of you bring that sense of fighting for what’s right to the new communities you will join.

Moreover, on a national stage, many have been reminded of how indispensable journalism is to a successful democracy. At The Daily, we’re not only training journalists to take that next step but serve the same purpose of keeping our community informed. I’m proud that we have remained committed to that mission and have been recognized for our success in doing so.

As of this academic year, students will no longer be able to indulge in Sunday night hot cookie bar at 1835 Hinman.

The dining hall, which in previous years has stayed open on weekends, will now close after dinner Friday to reopen on Monday, nuCuisine marketing manager Jason Sophian announced last week. Instead, Allison Hall’s dining area, formerly open only on weekdays, will now be an option seven days a week.

In addition, the Great Room will no longer be a dining option due to construction at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. The space

formerly occupied by the dining hall will now be used as a catering location, Sophian said.

“I’m really upset. I really liked the Great Room,” Weinberg sophomore Helen Foster said. “They had really good food, and it was cheap, and it was a good place to study. There’s no other place like it on North Campus.”

Whether or not the Great Room will be restored as a dining option after construction is completed remains to be decided, Sophian said.

“We’re not completely against bringing it back,” Sophian said. “At the same time, we’re really excited to have it as a catering space. If you’ve seen the Great Room, you know what a great space it is.”

Although the Great Room closing was prompted by construction,

Sophian said the decision to switch weekend dining on South Campus from Hinman to Allison was based primarily on student feedback.

“That was something we really heard a lot from students last year,” Sophian said. “They really wanted Allison open seven days a week.”

Medill sophomore Ben Sanders, who is living in Allison for a second year, said the weekend hours are a big improvement.

“Now I can stay in my pajamas and walk downstairs to breakfast instead of going all the way to Hinman,” Sanders said.

Man convicted in 2011 attack

A Hazel Crest, Ill., man was convicted Thursday of killing an Evanston man two years ago near the Chicago border.

A Cook County jury found Brandon Hinton, 28, guilty of first-degree murder for attacking and robbing John Costulas, 61, as he walked to work in the early morning hours of Sept. 2, 2011, in the 500 block of Howard Street. Hinton struck Costulas in the head before taking $10 from the hearing-impaired man and leaving him bleeding and unconscious, according to police.

The incident left Costulas in a coma, and he died eight days later, police said. An anonymous tip led detectives to Hinton on Sept. 12, 2011.

The 8th Ward community rallied around the case, with Ald. Ann Rainey urging her constituents to attend Hinton’s trial over the past two years.

On Thursday afternoon, Rainey called the verdict “closure for

the family ... but justice for the community.”

“Mothers and fathers, do not let your children grow up to commit senseless acts of violence,” Rainey wrote in a Facebook post.

Michele Hays, chair of Brummel Park Neighbors, said the south Evanston neighborhood turned out for every court date in Costulas’ memory.

“I hope this is the last case that neighbors need to watch, and the very last violent crime committed in Brummel Park and Southeast Evanston/Northeast Rogers Park,” she wrote in an email to The Daily on Thursday evening.

Hinton faces 20 to 60 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Northwestern has suspended its Egypt study abroad programs in Cairo and Alexandria due to the increase in political unrest this summer.

NU’s study abroad office made the call in mid-July after the death of an American student in Alexandria and violence surrounding the July 3 ousting of President Mohamed Morsi, said Julie Friend, NU associate director for international safety and security.

The decision affects two NU students who had plans to study in Egypt during Fall Quarter. One would have attended The American University in Cairo, and the other was enrolled in a Middlebury College program at Alexandria University. Both students are now spending the quarter in Amman, Jordan.

Friend said the office observed the situation in Egypt for 10 days before suspending the programs. In the past, disturbances in the country have been resolved quickly, Friend said, but the outbursts of random violence and breakdown of Egyptian civil society indicated this conflict would not end soon.

“The idea of being in a study abroad program is being able to go out and interact with the community and engage with the society,” Friend said. “If the security circumstances don’t allow students to do that safely, then it doesn’t seem reasonable to keep them there.”

The Middle East is not a popular location for NU students compared to programs in Europe, Friend said. Nine students are currently studying in the region — five in Jordan, three in Israel and one in Turkey, Friend said.

City teen charged in Preister slaying

An Evanston teen has been charged with killing 21-year-old Cardereon Preister, police said Thursday.

Matthew Dubose, 18, is accused of fatally shooting Preister shortly after 11 p.m. Sept. 10 outside Preister’s home in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue.

The incident happened about two blocks west of Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave. The North Regional Major Crime Task Force responded.

Police said Preister was shot once in the upper torso from behind. He was pronounced dead a half hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Dubose, of the 1800 block of Hovland Court, tried to trade drugs and money for Preister’s gun earlier this summer, police said.

“The exchange went awry between the two, which in turn lead to the murder of Preister several weeks later,” Cmdr. Jay Parrott said in a news release.

Preister was scheduled to be released from parole for burglary and drug charges in November.

Preister, a one time ETHS student, was involved in the city’s Youth &

Egypt programs. The country will likely be suspended until the State Department Travel Warning has been lifted.

The Study Abroad Office will then conduct its own review and make a recommendation to the provost.

Friend said if the warning were to be lifted by next summer, the earliest the program could resume would be the following Winter Quarter, as it would be too late to submit applications for Fall Quarter 2014.

By the end of last week, dozens of Preister’s friends and family members had left personal messages on the memorial near his home, filling two and a half posters with “R.I.P. Cardereon” already written on them.

SENIOR REFLECTIONS Finding my family at 2 a.m.

Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t sacrifice sleep for anyone. Not parties, not midnight movie premieres and especially not early-morning exams (thank God I’m going into journalism). The thought of staring at a textbook or, God forbid, wearing anything but pajamas past 2 a.m. is enough to make me yawn involuntarily. I’m a firm believer that the world would be a happier, more peaceful place if all evening events would begin at 9 and end strictly by midnight.

So why, then, did I spend nearly every weekday of sophomore and junior year on the third floor of Norris, in a room most students only know as the one adjacent to SOURCE, reporting, writing, revising, editing and then revising again, from dinnertime to an hour so late that only birds and the most dedicated joggers were awake when I finally stumbled out of the newsroom? Why did I sacrifice my sleep schedule, my class attendance record, my diet, my skincare routine and my general health to something that sometimes didn’t have the impact I craved?

As my days left at Northwestern inch closer to the single digits, this is something I’ve thought about a lot.

After all, I love Netflix and generally doing nothing.

I quit my middle school track team after three days because it required too much effort. Dedicating more time to The Daily than some people do to their real, salaried jobs just doesn’t make sense. But the more I thought about it, the more one word stuck out, that most necessary of things: family.

For as long as I remember, I’ve been obsessed with finding family. Not a biological family, of course, but my people, the ones I could call at any hour of the night (so, before 2 a.m.) to talk, the ones I could dissolve into laughter with at the mention of an inside joke. In high school, this was the show choir and theater kids, marked by hairspray and tearful renditions of songs from Wicked. In that uncertain bridge between high school and college, it was acquaintances turned fast friends, bonding over late-night breakfast at the local diner and plans to get the hell out of our Nebraska small town as quickly as possible. After that, it was my freshman dorm floor, brought together by the sheer misfortune of the high priority numbers that gave us 1835 Hinman and not Elder.

A place to eat and (mostly) sleep Of all the homes I’ve had at Northwestern— from McCulloch Hall to my sorority house to my apartment on Hamlin Street—there are none I look more fondly upon than the third floor of Norris.

Promptly at 5 p.m. for several years, I trekked across campus into Norris, past the students at Norbucks, to the third floor to work at The Daily, leaving at all hours of the night and sometimes the morning once each paper had been made.

As the years went by and as I continued to leave my literal homes to trudge to Norris, I realized increasingly just how worn the path to Norris felt for me. It was comfortable, familiar and consistent.

And, above all, grounding. Norris became, amidst the daily stress of making a paper, a safe haven— mainly away from the infuriation of classes and outside pressure. In speaking with my non-Daily friends, this experience was not uncommon. My

friends’ extracurriculars, and the meeting places of those groups, became an alcove that was unique to them as well. Students in other extracurriculars and throughout the years have used Norris, and various buildings on campus, to eat, drink and (sometimes) sleep, all while hitting group deadlines and goals.

It’s almost comical, actually, how often I have ended up sleeping somewhere on Norris’s third floor — a testament to just how much more time I spent in that building rather than my regular residences.

In fact, the more extraordinary nights I have had in the newsroom all revolved around how much sleep (or lack thereof ) I’ve gotten while in Norris.

I could always tell just how important the issue was based on whether I pulled an all-nighter that night working on the paper, or whether I dozed off in the middle of the night on one of the many wonderfully comfortable and completely stain-free

And now, after nearly four years of looking up at the clock and realizing it’s somehow 5 a.m., wanting nothing more than a healthy meal but settling for Norshore Pizza, screaming every last word of “Sorry” (bangers only) and most importantly, producing some of the best damn journalism around, The Daily has become perhaps the most important one. As an unsure freshman — an insignificant fish in NU’s big-ass pond — I didn’t know where I belonged. I joined The Daily for professional experience and something to do on weeknights (if only I had known what I was getting into), but I ended up with something so much better.

It is a true testament to the people at this organization that they have made a job, and a sometimes exhausting, frustrating one at that, so damn fun. People often warn against mixing work with play, but I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing better than doing what you love the most with people that mean the most.

I don’t know where I’ll be in the next five years, or even in the next five months (as my mom keeps so helpfully reminding me), but I do know without a doubt that whatever newsroom I end up in will never

compare to the love, laughter and yes, sleep deprivation that I found at The Daily. I was planning on an early night tonight, but as I write this column, on my last ever night in the newsroom, surrounded by the people who have meant the most to me, all I can think is: Maybe I’ll stay up after all.

Yet this year has seen a marked difference in my relationship with Norris. My last edit board position on The Daily ended after this past Fall Quarter, so I’ve been “retired” for what now feels like quite some time. I recently came back to the newsroom to help make the Graduation Issue and the path to Norris didn’t feel as familiar. I have only stepped foot in the newsroom a few times the past two quarters and I no longer know the majority of the staffers, both new reporters and new editors. I certainly would feel a bit awkward being the random girl sleeping on the third floor. While the newsroom isn’t as familiar to me, I know that it’s becoming that second home to this new generation, which is nearly as comforting

to me as Norris was during my college experience.

“When are you doing your journalism residency?”

After “where are you from?” that is the question I’ve been asked the most during my four years at Northwestern. For the final time, I’d like to remind everybody that I’m a student in McCormick, not Medill.

The misconception is understandable given my involvement with The Daily, but constantly correcting others wore on me. I thought about transferring between schools after my first quarter, and tried (and failed) to land a journalism internship throughout my sophomore year.

Though I stuck with my engineering education, the thought of continuing my journalism career past college lingered with me.

But this will be my last byline, at least for a while, and I’m happy to halt my writing here.

My thousands of hours devoted toward The

Daily didn’t amount to a job, but that hasn’t made the experience any less valuable.

If for no other reason, I loved working for The Daily because a night in a newsroom always distracted me from whatever problem sets I had to grind through for my engineering courses. I think many graduating seniors can relate: The things we did outside the classroom entertained and engaged us because they were different.

Journalism also constantly challenged me.

Few things in college scared me like interviewing Pat Fitzgerald after a loss, and being surrounded by so many talented peers made me feel like I always had something to prove.

The latter statement is probably true for NU in general, but I especially felt that to be the case when I was working outside my comfort zone.

Most of us have something we’ll be leaving

Garamond, and my college life In the 16th century, Claude Garamond designed a font that is still celebrated today; some of the then-revolutionary characteristics of Garamond, like its straight horizontal crossbar on the lowercase “e,” set standards for modern serif typefaces centuries after Garamond’s creation. Regardless of its historical significance, for me, Garamond has a certain strength that demands to be read, so I use it in a lot of my design projects.

Little did Claude Garamond know that I would choose his famed typeface centuries later to letter the headlines for the top stories of “The Daily Northwestern” when I redesigned its standard layout last summer.

Specifically, I used Garamond to headline the features that would come up occasionally when a story was too big for standard treatment — and while the regular, everyday news stories had headlines in a more standard and less artistic font, stories like the

announcement of Donald Trump’s victory last year were headlined in all-caps, 43-point Garamond: “TRUMP STUNS.” Garamond made designing all of these stories easy; when the Chicago Cubs won their first title in 108 years, I just slapped the celebrating picture over four columns of text and hammered “CUBS ON TOP” in proud, joyous Garamond across the front page. Even if the headline is something as shocking as “TRUMP STUNS,” Garamond adapts, and reads as somber and solemn as the words necessitate.

The point is, I’ll be honest: I’m as woefully unprepared to exit Northwestern as I was to enter it three years ago. I’ve been granted the privilege of admission into Northwestern’s law school next year, but as much as I was fearful of coming to Chicago and beginning my undergraduate life, so too am I afraid and anxious of what new unknown challenges I’ll

behind as we move to the next stage of our lives, whether that’s journalism, athletics, acapella or something else entirely. The transience of these experiences is part of what makes them special and we cherish them for the memories they provide. But it’s also important to remember why we got involved.

Whether we wanted to try something new or push our boundaries in something old, we all had a reason to pursue something outside the classroom. Whatever that reason, keep it with you as you leave NU. Proving a point served as my motivator.

Every time I answered a question about my imaginary journalism residency I was that much more motivated to prove I could be a journalist without formally studying journalism. Though it always annoyed me at the time, looking back I’m thankful for everybody who

has mistaken me for a Medill student.

My journalism career might be done, but my reason for writing will always stay with me.

What keeps me from panicking every day up until graduation is that I’ve been incredibly blessed to be able to remain at Northwestern and stay in the same area as my original class, the class of 2018, as they go through their last year. Whether they’re the friends I’ve made through The Daily or other student organizations, they were the community that made my time at Northwestern memorable.

My friends from The Daily stand out. All of the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with here do their work for the organization because they believe in its mission — and then they never waited to be thanked for their work. Conversely, they also never forgot to thank me when I did something for them, and all of them never failed to give me the space and material to work as a kooky designer who obsesses a little too much over typefaces and straight lines.

It’s these kinds of friends, I think, that I can rely on to be my Garamond in the future, wherever the future may lead me.

Tennis icon, equality advocate set to address graduates

1. King won 12 Grand Slam singles titles, 16 Grand Slam doubles titles and 11 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles during her playing career, and is only one of 10 women to complete the “Career Grand Slam.”

for women players, King and eight other players formed the Virginia Slims Circuit in 1970. This circuit morphed into the Women’s Tennis Association in 1973. King served as the organization’s first president.

2. Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs challenged King in a rematch of the “Battle of the Sexes” in 1973. King won the match in straight sets in front of a television audience of 90 million.

7. In 2006, the United States Tennis Association rededicated the National Tennis Center in New York the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center “in honor of one of tennis’ finest ambassadors.”

3. Since retiring from tennis, King has become an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ visibility and acceptance in sports and currently serves on the Executive Board of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

8. Angry at the disparity between the prize winnings of men and women champions, King threatened to boycott the 1973 U.S. Open unless the champions received equal pay. Because of her efforts, tennis is one of few sports that offer equal winnings for men and women. That year, the U.S. Open became the first tournament to offer equal winnings for men and women champions.

Philosophy Prof. Peter Ludlow resigns from Northwestern

Philosophy Prof. Peter Ludlow resigned in November 2015 from Northwestern following more than a year of legal battles and University findings that he sexually harassed two students. The University’s findings that Ludlow violated the school’s sexual misconduct policy came to light in February 2014, when a then-Medill junior filed a Title IX lawsuit against NU. The second instance the University found Ludlow in violation of its sexual misconduct policy came to light when Ludlow filed his own Title IX lawsuit against NU in 2014. The suit revealed the University also investigated Ludlow after a philosophy graduate student lodged a complaint in March 2014 that Ludlow had nonconsensual sex with her. The University found Ludlow in violation of its policy because he had “unequal power” in his relationship with the graduate student, according to his lawsuit.

Dillo Day canceled due to bad weather before artists perform

Dillo Day was canceled in May 2015 due to high winds. The annual musical festival on the Lakefill was shut down because of bad weather before any main stage artists were able to perform.

The 30 mph winds surpassed the wind tolerance level for the main stage.

Miguel was scheduled to headline the festival, which would have featured Odesza, Charli XCX, A$AP Ferg and Saint Motel.

Touting his administration’s health care, educational and economic policies, President Barack Obama called Kellogg School of Management students the leaders of the nation’s economic future in a speech peppered with jokes and Northwestern references in an October 2014 visit to campus.

Obama geared his remarks toward business students, joking about not having a Master of Business Administration and making repeated and pointed mentions of facts, data and statistics about economic policy throughout his speech, arguing that his administration’s focus on job creation, healthcare reform, education and clean energy has helped the United States recover from the 2008 recession.

Ludlow’s resignation came as the University was taking steps to terminate his employment and a faculty committee was considering his case, University spokesman Al Cubbage said.

“Ludlow’s actions violated University policy and are an aff ront to the standards and expectations that Northwestern University has for its faculty members,” Cubbage said in a

statement. “The University regrets the pain that was caused by his actions.”

Cubbage declined to comment on the situation further Tuesday, saying that he could not give any details about the two instances of sexual harassment.

Ludlow has not taught classes at Northwestern since March 2014.

In the past, Ludlow has denied all allegations of sexual assault. He did not respond to a request for comment

NU waits to see if Congress will renew Perkins loan program

For this year’s freshman class and future students, the Federal Perkins Loan Program may not be available if the U.S. Congress does not restore the financial aid program next month.

Oct. 1 marked the expiration of the Perkins program, which has aimed to offer low-interest payment plans for students with financial need for nearly 60 years since its founding in 1958. Congress could potentially renew the program in mid-December.

Northwestern is one of approximately 1,700 U.S. universities that offers Perkins loans to students, with 26 percent of current undergraduates receiving a Perkins loan.

Students who already received the award in the 2014-2015 school year or earlier will have their loan

package “grandfathered in” — meaning they will continue to receive the aid whether Perkins continues or not — either until they graduate or until five years time is up. Future classes, including current freshmen, are not eligible to be “grandfathered” into the program.

Last year, 23 percent of the $10.6 million in federal need-based student loans NU gave to undergraduates was from the Perkins program.

Roughly 20 percent of graduate and professional students who had loan packages received Perkins funding.

The loss of the Perkins loan program will not reduce the amount of aid the University can provide students, said Carolyn Lindley, NU’s director of financial aid.

Lindley said her office is working with the Office of Student Loans to establish a campus loan program similar to the Perkins program through different forms of funding such as a donor-established endowed loan program. Associate Provost for Enrollment Michael Mills said a group of University administrators met Monday to discuss this program and other potential plans should the » See LOANS, page 5

Gingrich, who ran an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2012, served as a United States representative from Georgia from 1979 to 1999. He also co-authored the “Contract with America,” a Republican plan to retake the U.S. House of Representatives. After the Contract’s release in 1994, Republicans successfully regained control of the House for the first time in 40 years.

An Evanston woman who won a renowned Chicago-area modeling competition this year was killed and a 15-year-old boy was critically injured Monday in a drive-by shooting on Chicago’s South Side.

The event, free and open to the public, will be held in the Louis Room of Norris University Center. Flagler, a Weinberg senior, said NU students would get priority in the Q&A session.

At this point, the group doesn’t know what Gingrich will speak about when he comes to NU later in November.

“We’re still working on the exact theme,” said Will Pritzker, College Republicans secretary of events and a Weinberg junior. “We don’t want to micromanage what Newt talks about, but I’d imagine a big theme is going to be broad stuff about freedom and conservative values.”

Funding for the event was provided by Associated Student Government and a grant worth up to $20,000 from Young America’s Foundation, a

conservative youth organization.

As the event draws closer, College Republicans will be providing periodic updates on their Facebook page about themes and advance tickets, Flagler said.

“We are saddened and brokenhearted to learn of the tragic passing of Kaylyn Pryor,” the Mario Tricoci modeling competition said in a statement. “This touches every one of us who knew and worked with her. Kaylyn will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit. She truly was beautiful inside and out.”

Tisdahl speaks at town hall Mayor discusses crime, state budget crisis

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl discussed recent crime incidents in the city, as well as problems Evanston is having due to the state budget crisis at a town hall Thursday night.

The city is experiencing limited funding and a potential threat to revenue because of the budget

impasse — which has gone on for nearly a year, Tisdahl said. She said she has talked to Gov. Bruce Rauner three times as part of her duties as the president of the Northwest Municipal Conference, primarily about her concern with Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda, which advocates for a property tax freeze, restructuring the motor fuel tax and giving local governments the ability to file for federal bankruptcy.

Tisdahl said Rauner told her

that under the plan Evanston could have a possibility of declaring bankruptcy — an option the mayor said she wants to avoid.

“It’s tremendously important to keep cognizant of the amount of debt we have in this community, and to be sure that we don’t spend ourselves into Gov. Rauner’s scenario of going bankrupt,” she said.

Construction worker found dead on site at NU

A 41-year-old Oak Forest, Illinois, construction worker died after he was found unconscious Saturday morning inside Shepard Hall.

His death was likely due to a heart attack, said Steve Olson, a principal of W.B. Olson, the construction company that employed the man. The man who died was an assistant superintendent for the company and was in charge of the construction site that day, as the superintendent had taken the weekend off, Olson said.

The man was discovered unconscious

in a field office on the second floor of the building by a colleague who called police at 10:19 a.m., said Gloria Graham, University Police assistant vice president and deputy chief of police. He had spoken with someone else in the building 30 minutes beforehand, Olson added.

When UP arrived at the scene, Evanston Fire Department officials were already treating the man. The fire department proceeded to take him to Evanston Hospital, 2650 Ridge Ave., Graham said.

“It’s tragic,” Olson said. “We went to the wake (Wednesday) night for him. He was a young man. This shouldn’t happen.”

The Cook County medical examiner’s office is in the process of determining an official cause of death, Graham said.

“After we voted it in, I started to clap and the room followed,” Sharma said. “But then when the legal studies major was passed right after, people clapped again.

People didn’t understand that I was thinking of the hunger strike, I was thinking of student activism — I was thinking that this is momentous.”

Weinberg’s major proposal guidelines include a two-part process to officially add a major to the school. The first part requires a reading of the proposal at a faculty meeting, which took place Jan. 13.

Sharma told The Daily last month that there was no negative sentiment toward the proposal at the January meeting and surmised it was likely to be passed at the next meeting.

Divvy bike-sharing stations will officially come to Evanston this summer after City Council approved their

installation in a 5-4 vote Monday.

The vote allows for the city to engage in an intergovernmental agreement with Chicago to expand the bike-sharing program to Evanston. Eight stations with ten bikes each will be purchased in part using a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation and will be installed by

July 1 of this year, along with two additional stations to be placed on Northwestern’s campus.

Unshackle NU presents ASG bill

Unshackle NU introduced legislation Wednesday at Associated Student Government Senate to pressure the University to divest from companies the group says promote the prison-industrial complex and to create a socially responsible investment committee.

The proposal comes one year after a Northwestern Divest resolution narrowly passed Senate, calling for the university to cease investment in companies the group said violate Palestinian human rights.

Unshackle NU members presented the resolution after a protest at The Rock on Tuesday. Currently, NU has less than $1 million invested in G4S, the largest security corporation in the world, and also likely has indirect investments in Caterpillar, William McLean, NU’s chief investment officer, told The Daily. The donated computers will be loaned out to low-income and first-generation students.

“Especially knowing that a lot of our students utilize their laptops and software, we know what it’s like to have that need,” she said. “We want to make sure that students don’t lack the access to technology needed to be successful here.”

The laptop loan program started last year in response to student need, SES director Kourtney Cockrell said. SES and NU Information Technology began with five laptops. About 10 more were donated by the School of Education and Social Policy and a subsequent handful were given by Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, she said.

“As I was interacting with students … laptop access was a big issue,” she said.

“We started really small and we’ve grown

now with this new gift from Medill.”

Cockrell said students request laptop loans at least two to three times a month.

The laptop is given to them for a quarter, then returned to NUIT over break to wipe them and check for viruses. Students can then “re-check out” the laptop the following quarter if needed, she said.

Laptops are the most in-demand item for low-income and first-generation students, followed closely by general academic supplies and textbooks, Cockrell said. The office also offers new winter gear to these students.

“If we’re not able to provide basic needs to all students from the beginning, how can we expect to create a truly inclusive environment?” she said.

SES is the product of organizing by students from Quest Scholars Network in response to student need. The office was created in October 2014 after Quest Scholars shared their experiences and struggles as low-income or first-generation students with administrators. SES regularly meets with Quest Scholars to discuss student needs and how students can become more involved with the administration, Cockrell said.

Amanda Walsh, president of NU’s chapter of the Quest Scholars Network, stressed the continued close relationship between the Quest Scholars and SES, noting that any gift to SES directly benefits students who need it.

Karl Eikenberry pulled out of becoming the executive director of the Buffett Institute, in April 2016. Northwestern announced last fall that Eikenberry was selected from a search committee to fill the new role of executive director of the Institute.

District 65 tax referendum approved Writer, alum gives

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 passed a proposed referendum by a wide margin Tuesday that will increase local property taxes to combat rising educational costs.

The referendum passed with more than 80 percent of support from 19,118 voters who weighed in on the issue.

It will raise property taxes by about $450 dollars annually for the average Evanston property owner, according to a District 65 financial presentation.

District 65 Superintendent Paul Goren called it a “humbling” day for the district.

He said the new referendum money will allow the district to continue work on multiple fronts, including improving student achievements, technology investments and keeping class sizes small.

Goren said referendums fail 70 percent of the time, on average, so the district couldn’t presume a successful

outcome. He pointed to the amount of support the referendum received as evidence of residents’ commitment to public schools.

“The overwhelming support and the deep commitment of voters of both Evanston and Skokie to their

public schools is something that we couldn’t be more appreciative of,” Goren said.

“It will make us want to wake up in the morning early and go to work and continue to make the differences that we’re doing.”

District 65 receives 75

Northwestern alumnus Gregg Mettler (Communication ’94) visited campus Tuesday to talk about his career in comedy television and gave advice on how students can achieve similar success.

Mettler, who is is best known for his writing on “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “That ’70s Show” and “Cougar Town,” talked to about 15 people at Norris University Center. While discussing his career, he recalled how he made his way up to a full-time writer from a night production assistant.

The event was organized by the Office of External Programs, Internships and Career Services.

EPICS assistant director Todd Lillethun said the purpose of the talk was to give students advice from an industry member.

“Gregg has done a lot of work since he graduated in 1994 and has had a lot of experience both

in mainstream comedies and dramas and lots of studio experiences, so it was really great timing for him to come now when we have a lot of the same interests in our current student body,” Lillethun said.

Mettler said his time in NU’s Creative Writing for the Media program piqued his interest in working as a television writer, Mettler said.

“That’s when I sort of became interested in TV writing, when somebody like me came to talk; so I always wanted to do this because it had a really serious impact on me,” Mettler said.

“That was pretty much the day of my life where I said, ‘I think I can do that — the thing that that guy’s doing.’”

After graduating from NU in 1994, Mettler moved to Los Angeles by himself in pursuit of a career in the television industry.

Evanston has issued more marriage licenses to same-sex couples than any other suburb in Cook County, according to a report released Wednesday by the county’s clerk.

Evanston issued 142 marriage licenses in Cook County’s first year after legalizing same-sex marriage, according to the report.

Cilento ticket violated rules

Associated Student Government’s election commission has ruled that Christina Cilento and Macs Vinson’s campaign violated election guidelines by failing to disclose they had received information about the voting margin while polls were still open during this year’s presidential election.

In a statement released Monday, the election commission said it found Cilento and Vinson’s campaign violated section 1e of the election guidelines, which states “campaign personnel may not serve on the Election Commission.”

The commission ruled the campaign’s use of the leaks and decision not to come forward about them constitutes SESP sophomore Kevin Corkran, the commission member who leaked the information, as “working on behalf of ” Cilento and Vinson’s campaign.

As a result, the election commission, which is responsible for overseeing the elections, is petitioning ASG’s Rules Committee to consider sanctions, which could include a revote, public apology or impeachment. This situation is “without precedent in institutional memory,” the commission said in its statement.

Cilento said although she disagrees with the commission’s decision, she

will fully cooperate with the Rules Committee moving forward.

“I’m just going to let Rules determine what the appropriate action is,” she said. “I just want to share our perspective … so I’ll be working with them in whatever they bring up.”

ASG parliamentarian Shelby Reitman, a Weinberg sophomore who chairs the Rules Committee, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Weinberg senior Scott Spicer, who ended his term as ASG parliamentarian earlier this month, said per the ASG Code, the Rules Committee must hold a hearing within 48 hours of receiving the petition from the election commission. He said the committee can decide the violation does not warrant punishment, but if the committee decides to recommend a punishment for Cilento and Vinson, Senate would have to approve the recommendation by a two-thirds vote.

On Thursday, The Daily reported Corkran leaked information to Cilento and Vinson at about noon and 4 p.m. on the final day of voting. However, Cilento had originally told both The Daily and the election commission her campaign only received information that the voting margin was “extremely close” once, at about noon.

Four years ago, Chicago Public School student Evelyn H. didn’t like science. This year, the 13-year-old won her school’s science fair with a project testing how many layers of insulation are needed to keep a house warm.

“I felt like science wasn’t my thing, but now it’s very interesting to learn about it,” she said. “Now when we learn about it, I try to ask questions to understand it.”

She said her change of heart came after she participated in Science Club, a free afterschool program sponsored

by Northwestern that aims to help students understand science concepts while sharpening critical thinking and problem solving skills. Evelyn is one of about 100 students in the Chicago area who attend the club, composed of middle school students from low-income households. Students attend weekly meetings at the Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Club, a youth center in Chicago and the group’s inaugural site.

Student bathroom bill introduced Ill. House legislation bases access to ‘private spaces’ on sex at birth

A bill that would prevent transgender students from using the bathrooms and locker rooms of the gender they identify with has been introduced to the Illinois House of Representatives, potentially compromising Evanston’s recent gender neutral bathroom ordinance if passed.

The bill, introduced by State Rep. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) would prevent Illinois students from entering “private spaces,” including bathrooms, locker rooms and rooms used during overnight school trips, that are not designated for their legal gender.

The representative said he believes the bill is important because of the “anatomical differences” of students of different sexes. Bills similar to Morrison’s have been emerging throughout the country in states such as North Carolina and Tennessee. “[The bill] will help school communities because it allows schools to provide privacy for all the students in the school building,” Morrison said.

“As a representative, I hear from many constituents that they desire that privacy when they’re in those intimate, vulnerable spaces, such as restrooms and locker rooms.”

The bill also makes accommodations for single-occupancy restrooms and changing rooms upon request if students feel they do not identify with their anatomical sex.

“I believe that it is a reasonable and compassionate compromise,” Morrison said.

If passed, Morrison’s bill may alter efforts made by Evanston officials last year to make bathroom facilities in the city more welcoming to the LGBT community. In November, Evanston City Council passed an ordinance requiring gender neutral signage for public facilities and businesses in the city with only one single-occupancy bathroom. If there are three or more restrooms in a facility, at least one of them must be labeled as gender-neutral.

ASG rules new leaders violated election guidelines

Associated Student Government’s election commission ruled that Christina Cilento and Macs Vinson’s campaign violated election guidelines by failing to disclose they had received information about the voting margin while polls were still open during the 2016 presidential election. The Daily reported SESP sophomore Kevin Corkran leaked information to Cilento and Vinson at about noon and 4 p.m. on the final day of voting.

However, Cilento had originally told both The Daily and the election commission her campaign only received information that the voting margin was “extremely close” once, at about noon. She later admitted to receiving information again at about 4 p.m. that the voting margin was within five to 10 votes. Corkran, who was a senator representing Students for Ecological and Environmental Development, resigned from ASG.

Confusion has surrounded the mayoral election since Miller filed his petitions in November, which was early than city officials had specified.

At the time, the city clerk’s office had declared the proper filing dates to be in December.

However, Miller filed weeks earlier, citing a 1992 Evanston referendum that said a primary must be held in a mayoral election if there are more than two candidates. Tendam, businessman Steve Hagerty, and former Evanston Township supervisor Gary Gaspard rushed to file soon after.

The city released a video Wednesday evening showing the 2015 arrest of Northwestern graduate student Lawrence Crosby, showing Evanston police kneeing him and punching his legs.

Crosby, a PhD candidate in the McCormick, was arrested on Oct. 10, 2015, after someone mistook him for stealing a car that he owned. He was charged with disobedience to police. Following the dismissal of his charges at trial, Crosby filed a lawsuit against the city, which is ongoing.

The Evanston Police Department released the video, which compiles footage from Crosby’s personal dashboard camera, police dashboard cameras and audio recordings of the 911 call that prompted the arrest, as well as conversations between police officers.

In an opening segment, Sgt. Dennis Leaks justified the use of force by police, saying it complied with police procedures.

He added that Evanston police have reviewed the incident further and “determined that we will no longer require subjects to be proned during these types of stops, as we acknowledge and realize that there are some problematic issues that come with that: locations of the stop, weather conditions, and it gives a bad perception.”

On the night of the arrest, a 911 call was placed to EPD by a woman who reported a man was breaking into a car. That man turned out to be Crosby, who is black, and the car was his own. When he heard the woman honk her car horn at him repeatedly, he got into his car and drove away. The woman followed him in her own car and informed police of where he was driving.

Police then pulled Crosby over and he exited his car unprompted, with his hands in the air and a cellphone in his hand, according to the video footage and police reports.

On Tuesday night, hundreds of Northwestern women were invited to join a sorority. For five days, they had devoted themselves to a long, intricate and sometimes below-freezing recruitment process hoping the common

belief would hold true: that a bid will be given to nearly everyone who goes through formal recruitment.

Adam Davies, who identifies as transgender femaleto-male, did not get a bid.

For three days of the process, the Weinberg freshman was an enthusiastic participant of Panhellenic Association’s Winter Recruitment. Last Thursday, Davies visited half

of the 12 chapter houses, delighting in a series of compressed get-to-knowyou conversations meant to familiarize potential new members with each sorority.

The next day, he was back in line outside the stone houses, eager again for people to get to know him and begin to see him as a potential member.

On Saturday, Davies learned that six sororities

had asked him back, a typical amount in the recruitment process according to PHA’s recruitment handbook. But on Sunday morning, Davies got a call from a University administrator requesting a meeting. Davies said he was told he had not been asked back to any of the chapters, for reasons of “fit and eligibility,” with the administrator putting emphasis on the

latter.

“They say every woman gets a bid,” Davies said. “But I’m not a woman.”

Davies says his gender identity cannot be confined to one of two boxes. He identifies as a boy, he said, but “only to the point where society needs to see a gender in me.”

Faculty talk student health Board throws out

Faculty Senate passed a resolution Wednesday encouraging all faculty to include

language regarding mental and physical health in their course syllabi.

The resolution, presented by Medill Prof. Karen Springen of the Student Affairs committee, provides faculty with an outline on how they can

implement student well-being into syllabi.

“If you find yourself struggling with your mental or physical health this quarter, please feel to approach me. I try to be flexible and accommodating,” the resolution said as an example of how professors could be more receptive to the needs of students.

Bienen Prof. Bob Hasty, also a member of the Student Affairs committee, said the purpose of the resolution is to encourage, but not force, faculty to include similar wording.

Springen said the inclusion of supportive language in syllabi is “absolutely optional” but can help students feel more comfortable reaching out to professors. Such language allows students to see that professors care about them and are accessible, she said.

The Evanston electoral board threw out objections filed by mayoral candidate Jeff Smith to the nominating petitions of four of his competitors.

The decision came two days after the board first met to hear Smith’s objections and ensures the mayoral primary scheduled for Feb. 28. It was the second decision the board has issued in this election season. In late December, the board overruled objections made by a supporter of candidate Ald. Brian Miller (9th). Former President Barack Obama will make his first public address since leaving the White House at the University of Chicago on Monday.

The conversation — geared toward “young leaders” and invite only — is part of Obama’s postpresidency goal to “encourage

The University suspended the chapter after the fraternity “knowingly violated” its disciplinary probation earlier this year, University spokesman Bob Rowley said. An investigation into the chapter found SAE had been “repeatedly

hosting parties and providing alcohol to minors,” he added.

Pending a possible appeal, SAE members living in the fraternity house are required to move out by May 6, Rowley said. NU will work with SAE

Fall, winter see dip in gun violence

Although gun violence in Evanston dipped slightly this past fall and winter compared to the same time period stretching from 2015 into 2016, local leaders say there is still plenty of work to be done to prevent further shootings.

“We don’t have any magic bullet for how we stop it now,” said Nina Kavin, co-founder of “Dear Evanston,” a social media campaign that seeks to raise awareness of local youth violence. “But I do think there are long-term solutions.”

Evanston saw no homicides resulting from gun violence from

September 2016 to February 2017, a drop from two fatal shootings in the same period from 2015 to 2016, according to Evanston Police Department statistics. Two people were injured from shootings from September 2016 to February 2017, while five people were shot and injured during that period in 2015 and 2016, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said.

Additionally, EPD saw a reduction in shots fired reports.

The department received 89 reports of shots fired from September 2015 to February 2016, and only 60 reports from the same period in 2016 and 2017, Dugan said.

Thousands defend science at march Roughly 50,000 attend Chicago’s March for Science

CHICAGO — Thousands of students, educators and scientists gathered in downtown Chicago on Saturday to participate in the March for Science, one of hundreds of such marches held worldwide on Earth Day. The march was a response to President Donald Trump’s election and, more recently, an executive order that threatened to remove existing legislation that combats climate change.

March director Kristian Aloma (Communication ’02) told The Daily roughly 50,000 people showed up on Saturday, 10,000 more than organizers expected.

He said he hoped the organization behind the March for Science in Chicago would continue to operate after the protest.

Before marching, protesters assembled along Columbus Drive to hear five speakers

— including Emily Graslie, chief curiosity correspondent at the Field Museum — discuss the importance of society’s role in science.

“Help elevate the voice of scientists; speak up for science,” Graslie told the crowd. “We’re educators, artists, communicators and writers, and passionate lifelong learners who have an obligation and mission to help others understand and empathize with our beautiful, fragile world.”

On the March for Science Facebook page, organizers described the march as “nonpartisan” and standing for “evidence-based policies that are built on an ethical approach to science.”

However, marchers carried signs that referenced Trump’s policies and executive orders with phrases like “Protect Bees, Not Borders.” Other signs played off Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign slogan, saying “I’m with her” pointing to a picture of the Earth.

Demonstrators said they came to the march for a variety of reasons, including protesting

homophobic, anti-Semitic, racist and other offensive graffiti inside Alice Millar Chapel early Friday morning, including in the chapel’s offices. The organ in the religious center’s Jeanne Vail Chapel was also painted with graffiti, but University Chaplain Timothy Stevens told The Daily in an email the spray paint had been removed from the organ.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon suspended from campus

Northwestern’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was suspended from campus in April 2017. The University suspended the chapter after the fraternity “knowingly violated” its disciplinary probation earlier this year. The suspension comes after another, separate investigation into the fraternity earlier this year.

In February, the University announced in an email alert to students that the Sexual Harassment Prevention Office had received an anonymous report that four female students had been possibly given a date rape drug at the SAE house on Jan. 21. The report said two of the students believed they were sexually assaulted.

SCOTT BOORSTEIN As we don our caps and gowns, one member of the Class of 2017 will not be here to walk with us.

Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Scott Boorstein.

For the longest time, people couldn’t make sense of why I always pulled all-nighters. Part of me didn’t either, at first. But I realize now that there was one simple answer to why I looked forward to and even bragged about them. It was a way I could spend at least 12 hours with my best friends, Daniel and Scott, and have them all to myself.

Scott was no average study buddy. It is a testament to him how the most stressful part of the quarter instead brought me unforgettable late nights of the three of us cracking up together or talking about the most random topics (and sometimes, even studying). Whenever it sank in that I was outrageously unprepared, I would simply find it funny because Scott just had a way of making every setback seem so inconsequential.

I can vividly remember him sitting on his twin bed in our sophomore year dorm at 4 a.m., only a couple hours before a test, and blurting out, “Hey, this is really easy if I look at the answers!” Or once while talking through a tough problem, he swiveled his head around at me and purposely mispronounced the word “variables” as “varia-blés.” As if we were cooks reading some obscure French recipe out loud.

Today, I would sign up for a thousand more exams just so I could have one last all-nighter with Scott and hear his bubbly laugh again. His brilliance, superhuman warmth and uncanny blend of wit and goofiness were sorely missed at Northwestern this year. There is no one like Scott, who was painstakingly welcoming to everyone he met, who made any party 12 times more desirable by simply showing up.

It has been hard to leave Evanston, a place I’ll always hold dear as my old stomping grounds with Scott. I felt a familiar comfort from every visit to the Buff Joe’s counter we had frequented and gotten yelled at by the cashiers. I treasured every night at a bar, party bus or dingy basement where I witnessed his legendary dancing. And our friend group has made sure to live out every birthday celebration this year with the same zest for camaraderie that he embodied so genuinely.

Above all, as I leave Northwestern, I remember the most monumental day of college for me. It was a day that came to be because the summer before freshman year, Daniel, Scott and I had all signed up to live on the first floor of Elder Hall, not knowing about the “Virgin Vault” and “Cockpit” gender divide and

innocently believing we scored big on a year of not having to climb stairs. I think to how I was freaking out in our study lounge the first week of class because I had a problem set due and didn’t have my textbook, and this boy with the purest smile and a million-dollar bowl cut so very kindly removed his headphones and said, “I think my roommate’s in that class.”

That was the beginning of a beautiful, carefree and hilarious three-year adventure.

It was the day I met Scott, who has forever been the best of us. As our friend group goes on to graduate this month, plunging into the next terrifying stage in our lives, I know we’re all going to be OK, because Scott is still with us, always.
