Letter from the Editor: Welcome to NU Dear incoming Northwestern students,

In a few weeks, you will arrive on campus to kick off your college career after what must surely have felt like an endless summer.

As your friends head off to semester-system schools and you count down the days until Wildcat Welcome, I hope this Orientation Issue saves you from some boredom and makes you a little more comfortable with the transition to college. It includes advice from current students and some of the biggest news stories from the past year in an effort to show you what life at Northwestern is like.

The Orientation Issue is also meant to introduce you to The Daily Northwestern, the University’s paper of record for the past 136 years.

We are an independent student newspaper and the only daily publication covering Northwestern and Evanston. We publish a print edition every weekday and update our coverage online with breaking news.

Last year, our reporters and photographers covered our basketball team’s first-ever appearance at the NCAA Tournament and traveled

to New York for our football team’s victory in the Pinstripe Bowl. We reported on Evanston’s municipal elections for six months and partnered with Political Union to host a debate for the five mayoral candidates in February. Throughout that time, our reporters also paid close attention to national issues and wrote about the effects of the presidential election on our community.

The Daily was recently named the best daily student newspaper in the country by the Society of Professional Journalists. The award was a recognition of the hard work our staff puts in every day, and it inspires us to keep striving to inform the community with fair and accurate reporting.

We also hope to engage with our readers, and we provide a forum for students to write opinions and commentary on issues affecting them.

If you’re interested in joining The Daily, visit our website and check out our recruitment page (dailynorthwestern.com/joinus). Anyone is welcome to become a reporter, photographer, designer, columnist or copy editor, and we are always looking for more students interested in coding, making videos and creating podcasts.

You don’t need to have any experience with

journalism to get started. I, for example, am not a Medill student — I study integrated science, and I have learned everything I know about journalism from my peers at The Daily. It is not uncommon for our staffers to come from different academic backgrounds, and some of our current editors study politics, computer science and chemistry.

I hope you find something you are passionate about at Northwestern, whether it ends up being The Daily or another student organization. I met many of my closest friends after joining groups I had initially not thought about, so I encourage you to explore when you arrive on campus. This issue, I hope, will serve as a starting point for that search.

As you gradually become more familiar with Northwestern, we will continue to tell stories that impact this community, and we look forward to writing about everything you will achieve.

Meal plan options to change, some costs to lower

Freshmen will be required to purchase the unlimited meal plan as part of a series of dining changes relating to Northwestern’s new two-year on-campus living requirement that administrators hope will increase student engagement with on-campus dining.

Director of Dining Ken Field said he hopes changes in cost, equivalency meals and dining dollars will make living on campus more enticing, particularly to students dismayed by the recently instituted two-year live-in requirement.

By utilizing several student focus groups, the University was able to reduce costs — the unlimited, or open access, meal plan, is now about $500 less expensive than in past years, Field said — and make other changes based on what students said

they wanted.

Besides swipes in the dining hall, students can use their meal plans to utilize the other dining options on campus, such as Starbucks in Norris University Center, Dunkin Donuts in Norris, Lisa’s Cafe in Slivka Residential College and numerous other early morning and late night favorites.

Previously, equivalency meals with varying values based on the time of day were used to buy food at these locations, but that option has been replaced with a more flexible system.

In the past, students had to use their weekly allotment of equivalency meals by Saturday evening, or they would be wasted. Field said that students in focus groups said they were often stressed by this hard deadline and ended up using their equivalency meals on things they didn’t want or need, just so they wouldn’t go to waste.

“One of the changes to the meal plan is we’re converting all the former points and equivalency

meals to dining dollars,” Field said. “For the unlimited, or open access plan, (students) get 125 dining dollars per quarter, in addition to unlimited access to the dining hall.”

In addition, dining dollars will roll over until the end of the school year, Field said. Didn’t finish your dining dollars during fall? Save them up for winter and get a warm drink every time you walk into Norris.

These dining dollars will come in handy even more this year than last year. Willard Residential College reopens in January after renovations, sporting its famed late-night spot Fran’s Cafe, which is currently located in the dining hall of 1835 Hinman.

In addition to revamping meal plans, FosterWalker Complex’s late-night dining — a huge perk if lab kept you from eating dinner or if studying made you hungry — is getting a makeover, as well. Late night is open immediately after dinner has ended, so if you’re hungry after 8 p.m., it’s

the place to go.

“We’re going to change the menus up for the late-night operations,” Field said. “(We’ll include) items you would see if you went to a restaurant in Evanston. It will be (an) upscale, made to order, order from a menu type of thing.”

This year, Elder Residential Community will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner and will be the only dining hall on campus to offer carry-out dining, Field said. Students will be given a container to put their food in, which will be especially helpful if lines at Sargent Hall are long, as they often are.

Starting last year, local restaurants, such as Tomate Fresh Kitchen and Hecky’s Barbecue, were featured in dining halls so that students could experience these restaurants without having to spend money, Field said, an activity likely to continue on a monthly basis again this year. sophiemann2018@u.northwestern.edu

Registrators’ block? Try out these classes

One of the most stressful parts of Wildcat Welcome is fall quarter class registration, which requires significant preparation so that you can click “enroll” at the exact minute that your randomly assigned registration window begins. Fortunately, unlike most other universities, Northwestern provides a searchable index of ratings and reviews from past students for every class — they’re called CTECs, and they’re viewable on CAESAR. When you’re looking for electives to fill the holes in your schedule, check off needed distribution requirements or have a little academic fun, check out these popular, highly rated electives.

Introduction to Russian Literature (SLAVIC 210-2)

Professor: Gary Morson Average rating: 5.3 (out of 6) CTECs excerpt: “Will push you to consider things about life that you had never thought of before.”

The lowdown: Easily the most famous of all NU electives, Prof. Morson’s legendary Intro to Russian Literature is offered every fall and can seat up to 588 students. Most of the hundreds who take it each year fall in love with Morson’s dry humor and magical ways of making old Russian books fascinating to all. Wrote one reviewer last fall: “This class changed my life.”

Introduction to Sociology (SOCIOL 110)

Professor: Craig Rawlings Average rating: 5.3 CTECs excerpt: “An authentically interesting class that discusses very relevant real-world topics such as religion, culture, and social deviance.”

The lowdown: A popular survey class that many students take to a fill a distribution credit, Rawlings takes the broad subject of sociology and gears it towards real-life applicability. Plus, he’s a pretty popular professor himself, described as “quirky and funny” by one reviewer and “an incredible lecturer” by another.

Introduction to Buddhism (REL 210)

Professor: Sarah Jacoby Average rating: 4.8 CTECs excerpt: “Even if you aren’t interested in Buddhism, this course is really stimulating.”

The lowdown: Jacoby’s class approaches Buddhism from an analytical angle, keeping even the most agnostic students interested. It’s the most well-known elective in the religion department by far, so registering before it fills up can be competitive.

Introduction to Sculpture (ART 240)

Professor: Allison Wade Average rating: 5.4 CTECs excerpt: “A great class to learn a lot about a subject you might otherwise know nothing about, and to relieve some stress from the rest of your course load/life.”

The lowdown: If any class can make the rest of your quarter actually feel easier, it’s Intro to Sculpture, which students describe as a stress-buster and welcome respite from the intensity of their other classes. It meets for three hours on Tuesday and Thursday morning, so if you can fit that into your schedule, snatch one of the seven remaining seats in this 20-person class.

Statistical Methods in Psychology (PSYCH 201)

Professor: Harry David Smith Average rating: 4.6 CTECs excerpt: “The group work was extremely helpful in learning the material and getting ready for the tests.”

The lowdown: If you’re not exactly a math whiz but need to knock out Weinberg’s “Formal Studies” distribution requirement — a vague term for math and statistics classes — this is a great choice.

Not only does Statistical Methods in Psychology present stats in a way that liberal arts majors can understand, but it incorporates an interesting twist, with much of the class’s smaller assignments and quizzes being done in a team-based format.

As freshmen, it can feel overwhelming keeping track of all the fun events at Northwestern, especially while balancing school work and extracurriculars. There’s always something going on on campus, and it’s impossible to experience everything. So here’s a breakdown of some events you simply cannot miss.

Homecoming Game

As newborn Cats, this is the time to show off your purple pride. This year’s Homecoming game will be against Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m., following the Homecoming parade on Friday night.

Be prepared to cover yourself in purple, put on your game face and join NU students, parents, faculty and alumni in cheering on the Cats at Ryan Field.

Big Bite Night

Attention food lovers: One Sunday in fall quarter, restaurants in downtown Evanston open their doors and offer free samples of their food to Wildcats. Last year, over 30 restaurants participated in this culinary tour.

Dance Marathon

It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Every year in March, more than 1,000 undergraduates dance for 30 straight hours to raise money for a chosen beneficiary.

Since 2011, NUDM, one of the biggest student-run philanthropy efforts in the nation, has raised more than $1 million annually. In 2018, NUDM will support Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit that provides necessities for children in homeless or low-income situations.

Dog Days

This annual spring quarter philanthropy event hosted by Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity sells hot dogs that are delivered around campus for an entire week until 1 a.m., providing a cheap late night snack for students. Last school year, the funds went toward the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in memory of Scott Boorstein, a member of the fraternity who committed suicide last September.

Waa-Mu Show

The Associated Press has dubbed it “the greatest college show in America.” The Waa-Mu Show is a musical performed and written entirely by students and is the oldest theatrical tradition at NU. Watch the show this year from May 4 to 13 and witness the talent, passion and creativity that defines the Wildcat community.

Dillo Day

Every year on a Saturday in late May, students gather on the Lakefill for music, food and good company. The largest student-run music festival in the nation, Dillo Day captivates campus for an entire weekend. Past headliners include MGMT, Chance the Rapper and Walk the Moon. Also, don’t miss out on Battle of the Bands and Battle of the DJs, which take place in the weeks prior to Dillo Day and feature student bands and DJs competing for the chance to perform on stages among big name artists. kristineliao2020@u.northwestern.edu

Burlesque Show

Mark your calendars, it’s the hottest show in town! The Burlesque Show, presented by Lipstick Theatre, takes place in April during Northwestern Sex Week. This theatrical production presents a variety of skits focused on the themes of body confidence and sex positivity.

Go Cats! Top rituals for how to support NU teams

When I brought a high school friend to Northwestern for Dillo Day, I was horrified when he thought our school cheer was, “Go Northwestern!” To prevent you from making the same mistakes, I present to you the Northwestern sporting event “Need to Know” guide.

This guide has it all, from popular chants at games to our sporting traditions and places you need to know to help you blend in with the pack of Wildcat faithful as soon as you step foot on campus. From Ryan Field to Allstate Arena, purple pride to key jangling, find out what you need to know for your NU sports introduction.

Chants

“Go U! NU!” — This one is a simple call and response, often initiated by the band section to the students. One group will call “GO U,” and you’ll reply, “NU!” The most basic of the cheers: If you can lock this one down, you’ll be on your way to blending in really quick.

“Justin Jackson, the ball carrier.” — Get this: After every run by star running back Justin Jackson (see page 46), the public address announcer will say, “Justin Jackson the ball carrier.” Your job is to repeat that sentence, in unison with the rest of the student body. It’s really cool and never failed to elicit a laugh the first few times I did it.

“GOOOOO CATS!” — As easy as it sounds, just follow the band on this one.

“Go U! Northwestern!” — The Cats fight song! Played at every sporting event, drill this one in your head as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it’s too long to put in print, but find it online or ask your eager Peer Adviser to teach it to you.

Traditions

Key Jangling — Since we’re “a Midwestern Ivy” and think we’re better than other schools, this tradition serves to remind our opponents of that fact. On kickoffs, take your keys out of your pocket and shake them at the opposing team — a thinly veiled message that graduates of that school will be valet parking our cars one

day. Stay classy, Northwestern.

Wildcat Dash — At the game against Bowling Green at the end of Wildcat Welcome, you’ll partake in a classic Northwestern tradition. Before the game starts, you and your PA group get to dash across the field while music is playing and fans cheer. Hold on to your hat.

The Knee Cat Claw — To ensure the entire student body has matching, immaculate handclaws, there is a standardized process for making one. Put your hand on your knee, and then, without moving your fingers, raise it into the air. After this revolutionary procedure, you have

yourself an officially sanctioned Cat Claw.

Places

Ryan Field — The home of Northwestern’s football team and a popular Saturday destination six or seven weeks out of the year. Usually, the crowd is composed of a large contingent of fans of the visiting Big Ten team, in addition to diehard Wildcats fans and the student body.

Interestingly, the stadium’s asymmetrical shape is a result of the University running out of funds when building it in 1926. Pro tip: don’t leave at halftime.

Allstate Arena/Welsh-Ryan Arena — While Welsh-Ryan Arena is under construction this year, the men’s basketball team will be taking their home games to the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, near O’Hare International Airport.

It’ll be a bit more of a trek to see NU in action, but with a team that just went dancing for the first time and returned most of its starters, it’s worth the trip. The women’s team will play at Evanston Township High School, which is far more accessible. ryanw@u.northwestern.edu

Top advice for international new students

International students comprise one of the most diverse communities at Northwestern.

Whether you hail from a neighboring country or have to go through a series of three to 10-hour flights to get to Evanston, you add on to the university’s rich culture and identity. As you transition into this community during the following months, here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind from one of your own.

Don’t underestimate the power of International Student Orientation. There is a reason NU flies us on campus three days before everyone else, and that reason takes the name of “American bureaucracy.” In ISO terms, this means to carry all your visa documents with you neatly until you are asked to pass them along to your advisors, while at the same time familiarizing yourself with Evanston delicacies and campus ins-and-outs. Remember that many of you have not had the chance to be toured around the place at which you will spend your college years, so take advantage of its relative barrenness while you can.

Get to know your pack, and take them or leave them. As most of you spend your time adjusting to the Illinois climate and time zone, many fellow freshmen will be bonding over the lack of shower water at pre-orientation programs. Although you don’t get the chance to go hiking or live in tents (and what an experience that is!), you do have the opportunity to connect with international students via the Facebook pages of your 2021 class and, of course, ISO. Other students will just be like you — new to America and seeking the sense of belonging. Having friends is a way to feel that you have a connection with a place and this will get you through first few days of adjustment. After that, the bonfire that is held during ISO is a complete blast, and Wildcat Welcome will leave you with more faces, names and long-distance phone numbers than you can remember.

Don’t keep your parents in the dark. No matter how many hours your flight was or how much time it took you to find your dorm address, it is imperative to reach out to your parents at least once every couple of days on the first week. Whether they are on campus or thousands of miles away during orientation, college is a big step in your life that they should be part of. Keeping them updated on what you have done and whom you have met will not quite be a middle school meet-and-greet, but it is something they will cherish onto until you visit them for Winter Break, if not later.

Be safe. New to an environment, you should be curious but never reckless. Your safety and well-being are your most important assets.

There is a lot of fun to take advantage of in Evanston, Chicago or even other states, but try not to be overwhelmed by excitement and forget about safety.

Live in the moment. This cliché will never wrong you. College is one of the best times in a person’s life. You can’t imagine how much you will change and improve throughout these four years. Chances are, at some point in your life, you’ve had to share your living space with another person, either short term or long term.

Maybe you’ve lived with siblings, or spent a week or so away at a summer program. If you’ve been in those situations, you may think you’re prepared to live with a roommate. However, it can a little more complicated than you originally thought.

My roommate and I chose each other as roommates after meeting at Wildcat Days the previous April. We had briefly discussed our sleeping habits, goals for college, and our interests. We thought we were a perfect match.

We had a good relationship, but we weren’t best friends.

We started each day out by asking each other what our plans were that day. This gave us an idea of when we each would be in the room, if one of us would be studying or taking a nap in the room during the day, and how late we would get back from our respective student group commitments. Simply talking to your roommate about their plans for the day, or for the week, can be extremely helpful when it comes to respecting each other’s time and habits.

It’s good to discuss how clean you want the room kept and what you can and cannot share, as well. I bought a small broom, and both of us used it whenever we felt it was necessary to keep the room tidy. I didn’t mind sharing my kitchen soap and sponge, hair dryer or clothes with my roommate, and she didn’t mind sharing her mirror and clothes with me. We did decide to keep our food separate for the most part, just because of how much it cost. Having

boundaries like this can save you from unnecessary fights later on, and if you’re ever unsure of whether you can borrow something, just send your roommate a quick text to ask.

From the moment I met my roommate to the day we moved in, my roommate knew that I was in a long-distance relationship.

This meant FaceTiming with my boyfriend and calling him very often (every night, to be exact). I made sure that my roommate was okay with that before we even agreed to room together. My relationship was different than what a on-campus relationship would have been, but if you find yourself in a situation where you want your room to yourself, just keep your roommate in the loop. If possible, ask beforehand when you can have the room, or send a text to your roommate if the situation is spontaneous.

One thing to keep in mind is that the person you room with at the beginning of the year may not be the exact same person by the end of the year. Freshman year is a time of personal growth, finding your interests and exploring what the campus has to offer. My roommate went through sorority rush in the winter, and after that she was a lot more social. I got more involved at The Daily and became closer to friends in my dorm. New calendar system to reform alcoholic events

Starting this school year, students will be able to browse upcoming fraternity and sorority events thanks to a common calendaring system.

Travis Martin, director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, said the office developed the calendar so students can access event information in one place. He said when a group in one of the four Greek councils — Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council or Panhellenic Association — want to host an event at which alcohol will be present, they will now have to submit a notification form to his office. The organizers will also have to notify their respective Greek council, Martin said.

Martin said the common calendar system will make events safer because groups will have to outline their own risk management strategies.

“We are wanting to partner with the national organization to help and ensure that the chapters are thinking through all of the things that will make an event safe,” he said.

Besides the calendaring system, administrators are seeking student input in an attempt to reform the University’s alcohol policy surrounding student events.

A policy adopted in September 2016 requires all events at which alcohol will be present to first be approved by Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin. The policy outlines other provisions, like screening processes to identify underage students and appropriate advertising.

The policy allows alcohol to be served to ofage students at events hosted by student groups if the alcohol is monitored by a third-party bartending service. The group must notify the University of the event’s date, time and location as well as adhere to a risk management policy.

Associated Student Government president Nehaarika Mulukutla said she helped

contribute to a policy proposal to reform alcohol policy so events are safer for students. The Weinberg senior said she compiled student feedback received during an ASG town hall in May. “We’re at the peak time, the primetime, to propose changes to anything,” Mulukutla said.

“Any time the administration makes a decision, they seek student input — but if students aren’t willing to be there and talk and put forward their ideas and push them, then the administration isn’t going to be able to listen.”

Martin said while he thinks the current alcohol policy keeps students safe, he’s open to hearing new suggestions.

“I support them in their efforts to make the proposal to the administration as well,” Martin said. “I’m looking forward to see what that proposal entails, and to help support their and elevate their voice to the administration.” ericasnow2019@u.northwestern.edu

Tips from a legend: NU star shares sage wisdom Sanjay Lumpkin’s Northwestern story epitomized the cliche of making lemons into lemonade. During his freshman year on the basketball team, Lumpkin’s season was ended months early by a wrist injury. But by missing the season, he was granted a redshirt year and able to come back for a fifth season in 2016-17, when he served as the team captain for the Wildcats’ first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. After finishing his master’s degree in Sports Administration, the now-former NU basketball star passes on what he learned in college:

Having had time to sit back and think about my time at Northwestern, I’ve reflected on things that went well in my experience and on what I might have done differently. My experience on campus was different than that of many of my peers because I was a student-athlete. The transition from my senior year of high school to my freshman year of college was tough due to the rigors and expectations of academic life at Northwestern, and my desire to compete at the highest level of Big Ten athletics.

The best advice I can give to you as freshmen is to manage your time properly. Coming into

college is, for many, the first time you have ever been on your own, and it is a bigger change than you might think. Keep a schedule and update it regularly with your classes, activities, responsibilities and free times. There is a lot on the plate of a freshman student, and managing your life in a way that you can have room for everything will make your experience much more fun.

Looking back at my experience, the one thing that I would have done differently is becoming more involved with student life activities and groups on campus. Part of me didn’t have the time because I was busy with basketball and the responsibilities of being a student-athlete, but if I really wanted to, I could have made the time.

I challenge you to branch out and at times get out of your comfort zone, because at a place like Northwestern, you never know who might be living two doors down from you. I am leaving here with relationships that will last me a lifetime and experiences that I will never forget, but I could have made even more if I wanted to.

With dozens of restaurants ranging from ramen to fried chicken, there’s a reason Evanston has been crowned the dining capital of the North Shore.

The food scene has blossomed over the years in Evanston, as restaurateurs rush to capitalize on the city’s close proximity to Northwestern and its residents’ appetite for fine cuisine. Though the familiar array of fast-casual spots — Chipotle, Blaze Pizza, Noodles & Company, etc. — have captured much of the college student market, it’s worth taking some time to discover these lesser

Sexual assault allegation, later suspension for SAE

Northwestern’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was suspended April 21 for knowingly violating the disciplinary probation it received in fall 2016, though the chapter faced no disciplinary action from a previous investigation into allegations of sexual assault and drugging.

The suspension was handed down because SAE continued to host parties and provide alcohol to minors. The investigation into that suspension was prompted by the previous investigation into the sexual assault allegations.

On Feb. 6, the University announced that the Sexual Harassment Prevention Office received a report the previous week that four female students were potentially given a date rape drug at SAE on Jan. 21. The report also stated that two of the female students believe they were sexually assaulted.

The University also received a report on Feb. 3 alleging that a female student had been sexually assaulted, potentially with the use of a date rape drug,

after attending an event at a second, unnamed fraternity house the previous night.

Following the allegations, the University launched an investigation into the incident, and SAE national headquarters began its own investigation and ordered a halt in the NU chapter’s activities. In addition, NU’s Interfraternity Council suspended fraternity social events indefinitely and used the time to reassess the council’s policies on risk management and alcohol.

In response to the announcement, more than 300 students marched down Sheridan Road, starting from the SAE house and ending at its national headquarters, which is based in Evanston, and called for the removal of the University’s chapter.

On Mar. 30, the University announced that it had concluded its investigations and would take no disciplinary action against either fraternity. However, the University stated that it would continue to look into other potential violations of the Student Code of Conduct that were revealed during the initial investigation.

As a result of this secondary investigation, SAE was suspended for the probation violation. The fraternity will remain suspended until Sep. 1, 2018. kristineliao2020@u.northwestern.edu

Looking for Christian Community at NU?

Students protest ICE speaker on campus, some face university backlash

Some members of the Coalition of Students for Immigrant Justice are still undergoing the University’s conduct process for organizing and participating in a spring protest against the presence of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement public relations official.

Lam Nguyen Ho, executive director and founder of Community Activism Law Alliance, told The Daily he and three of his colleagues from the Chicago-based legal aid organization are representing “approximately five students” through a formal resolution under the procedures of the Student Handbook. Nguyen Ho added that additional students not represented by CALA could also be facing disciplinary action.

Mold was found in at least three residence halls last fall, a situation that may have affected the health of a large group of residents and that some students contended was poorly handled by the University.

The saga began in late October, when several residents of Foster-Walker Complex told The Daily that residential services staff were brushing off their reports of mold in their rooms. Though staff was aware of the problems, the students said the affected areas would not be cleaned and furniture replaced without further pressure, which included complaints from parents.

Just days later, a handful of residents of Ayers College of Commerce and Industry noticed what appeared to be mold on the bottom of their mattresses, which led to several students leaving the mattresses in hallways before they were cleaned. The situation then escalated, as several students complained that cleaned mattresses would not be safe enough; one called the University’s decision not to replace mattresses “ridiculous.”

Administrators reversed course the next day and said they would replace 50 mattresses, an action that,

the presence of an ICE representative was potentially harmful to undocumented people or those who have had a loved one detained by ICE. Redbird said she invited the representative to engage in a dialogue about the operations of the agency.

The incident sparked a campus-wide debate over the validity of the demonstration and whether protesters infringed on free speech.

President Morton Schapiro and Provost Daniel Linzer issued a statement condemning the behavior of the protesters, calling it “disrespectful, inappropriate and contrary to the values of the University.”The statement also argued for the protection of free expression and said it should not be met with censorship.

Ten days after the incident, a group of students held a silent, peaceful protest outside of Scott Hall, holding up posters that communicated a list of 14 demands for the silent protesters. The list, which also circulated online, broadly demanded the University find more support resources for students of color and undocumented students.

Several days later, test results showed that the substance in Ayers was indeed mold, but that it was not toxic. Mold was also reported in Bobb and McCulloch Halls; tests determined the same strain of mold was present there as in Ayers. Though several students expressed concern about conditions in Bobb, no widespread changes were made.

There have been no reports of significant mold issues since.

Notable speakers share secrets to success at NU

The diverse interests of Northwestern students were reflected last year in speakers who represented a vast swath of artistic, political and cultural backgrounds.

Despite a volatile 2016 presidential race marked by calls for protectionism and trade restriction, International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde in September stressed the importance of maintaining free and open global trade.

“Restricting trade is a clear case of economic malpractice,” Lagarde said. “Rather than helping those sectors of the economy it means to protect, shutting off trade would deny families and workers important economic opportunities.”

Lagarde, the first woman to head the IMF, also tackled the subject of income inequality in the United States, saying the IMF supports a higher minimum wage and the continuation of the earned income tax credit.

In January, writer Ta-Nehesi Coates discussed his experience as a black man and father in America, while also addressing politics and writing. Coates, a national correspondent for The Atlantic and author of National Book Award-winning “Between the World and Me,” said President Donald Trump’s victory was the “clearest evidence of white supremacy.”

“Black folks can’t be Donald Trump,” said Coates.

“If you were that foolish about the world, you might get shot.”

Still, he agreed with sociology Prof. Mary Pattillo, the event’s moderator, that taking pride in one’s black identity is an effective way to combat the Trump movement’s “anti-black influence.”

In April, highly-regarded Hollywood director Barry Jenkins spoke at NU. Jenkins, director of the Academy Award-winning film “Moonlight,” spoke of film’s history, saying that without playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney and his semi-autobiographical play, “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue,” there would be no film.

The film, lauded for its poignant depiction of a gay black man coming of age in Miami’s Liberty City, beat out fan favorites like “La La Land” and “Manchester by The Sea” at the 2016 Academy Awards to become the first LGBTQ film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Though Jenkins is straight, he said amplifying McCraney’s voice helped lend itself to the film’s authenticity.

“I feel there’s a ceiling of how far empathy can get you as an artist,” Jenkins said. “There’s a ceiling for how far these good intentions can get you, which is why I wanted a first-person perspective on the piece.

In the wake of the Trump administration revoking transgender student protections, the Evanston Township High School/District 202 made a landmark decision this past spring when it voted to allow transgender students to use the locker room of their choice.

The high school had already allowed transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice, but students previously needed to request access to a separate locker room. School board officials crafted the policy in April after they felt they needed to language to better support its gender discrimination policy.

At the time the decision passed in May, ETHS superintendent Eric Witherspoon commended the board for taking “a huge step forward” at the meeting in front of more than 50 students and parents.

“I hope you understand that this board just made history,” Witherspoon said in May. “These are people who have put in place statements and policy about honoring transgender students in a way that no other district that we know of in the state has (done).”

ETHS’s transgender policy was lauded by community stakeholders and board members alike. Eric Greenfield, a recently graduated transgender ETHS student, said she thought the policy would help other transgender students feel more comfortable in the classroom.

“It’s the school saying, ‘We recognize that you’re here, and we want to make your experience here at Evanston fixed’,” Greenfield said. “Safety is such an important thing to have for students because if you’re not safe, you’re not going to want to learn.”

The Evanston/Skokie District 65 school system achieved a major victory this past year when a property tax referendum aimed at combating rising educational costs was passed by voters on the April municipal ballot.

Facing a projected $114 million deficit by fiscal year 2025, the district school board needed to make a decision in January: Add a property tax referendum to the ballot, or make significant budget cuts that would likely result in substantial class size increases and school closings. The board voted unanimously for the former.

In the three-month time period between the referendum being put on the ballot and the date of the municipal election, local groups organized in support of the referendum. School board members also provided information about the impact the increased funding would have for Evanston, and the small portion of Skokie included in the district, as a whole.

The referendum passed with more than 80 percent of support from 19,118 voters who weighed in on the issue. It will raise property taxes by about $450 annually for the average Evanston property owner, according to a D65 financial presentation.

Immediately following the news of the passed referendum, D65 Superintendent Paul Goren called it a “humbling” day for the district. He said the new referendum money will allow the district to continue work on multiple fronts, including improving student achievements, technology investments and keeping class sizes small. ryanw@u.northwestern.edu

With Greek life, a unique Don’t feel pressure to go and valuable community Greek at Northwestern

For about 90 percent of you, I bet that’s the first word that pops into your head when you think about Greek life. But for about 40 percent of the student body at Northwestern, Greek life is a part of their normal day — outside of dark, sweaty fraternity basements.

Before I became a member of a fraternity, that was my perception too, carefully crafted by “Animal House”, “Blue Mountain State” and “Old School”. But my experience has been far from that — Greek life helped me with my transition to college, and gave me a community that I struggled to find during my first quarter of college.

People will make the argument that joining Greek life means you’re “buying your friends,” but I would say it gives you a network to meet people you would never know otherwise. How else would a freshman comedian from London and a sophomore computer science major from New Jersey come into contact?

Some of the people I trust and count on the most at college I met through Greek life, and I can’t count the amount of times those people have been there for me when I was unsure of my place at Northwestern.

By joining Greek life, you become a part of a smaller community united under a shared roof, and you’re able to feel more comfortable in the sometimes overwhelming size of Northwestern.

But in addition to the clichéd idea that you meet your lifelong friends in Greek life — which is definitely possible, but isn’t always the case — your social life is given structure.

You have a set time where you know those people will be at a certain place, which is more than you can say for other groups.

How many times have plans fallen through because people couldn’t agree on a time and place to do something? With a social calendar

planned for you, all you have to do is show up to an event, and people that you want to hang out with will be there.

Greek life has also saved my GPA more than once — I would often study for big midterms and finals with a group of my fraternity members, and would sometimes learn more from them than from a professor with a Ph.D. By bringing together a group of people with disparate interests and skillsets into the same place, Greek life helps to foster a learning community that supports everyone’s weaknesses.

If the financial burden is a concern for you like it was for me, most organizations are very understanding and will allow you to pay reduced dues. IFC and PHA also have scholarships for members of Greek life in addition to organization-specific scholarships. If you want to be a part of Greek life, don’t let the money aspect of the process stop you—there is a lot of help available for you if you ask for it.

Ultimately, whether or not you want to join Greek life is a decision that only you should make. Don’t rush simply because your roommate is, and don’t count out Greek life because of what your parents think being a part of it means.

Before I arrived on campus last fall as a freshman, I had a lot of questions on my mind — about everything. From my classes to transitioning dorm life to dealing with meal points, I didn’t know a lot about a lot. My biggest questions by far, however, revolved around being able to find a solid community in a completely new environment over 700 miles away from home.

If you’re like me, you might be coming to Northwestern with a few preconceived notions or expectations of what your life in college should look like.

Even prior to stepping foot in Evanston, I’d read that 38 percent of students are in fraternities or sororities. I’d heard people say students don’t have a social life if they don’t join Greek Life. So when I finally got to campus, I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy my college experience if I didn’t do so. I wasn’t considering joining a fraternity that strongly beforehand, but as a result of everything I’d heard, I found myself going to Sunday Night Dinners and thinking about it more. Eventually, I decided not to go through recruitment because I just didn’t want to — and I don’t regret that decision.

Greek Life isn’t the only way to make friends, build relationships or find a home at NU. I’ll repeat it: You can still have a social life, even without being in a fraternity or sorority. To be clear, this isn’t to say Greek Life can’t be a great avenue toward meeting new people and forming friendships or to dissuade anyone from joining — just that there’s more than one way to do so.

Without being in a fraternity, I still found community across campus during my first year. Some of my closest friends at NU were people I first met on my floor and throughout my entire building. By the end of the year, the different student organizations I

Even at my on-campus job, I formed strong relationships and felt a sense of community.

Greek Life isn’t the only way to make friends, build relationships or find a home at NU. ... There’s more than one way to (find a home).

And while potential reasons to join Greek Life do exist beyond the social aspect, many of them aren’t exclusive to fraternities and sororities. Plenty of ways to do community service, volunteering and philanthropy still exist outside of chapter houses. And even without being in Greek Life, you’ll still be able to go out or head over to the fraternity and sorority quads whenever you want.

As an incoming freshman, I’d heard that a divide existed between students in Greek Life and those not, but that’s honestly just not true. At the end of the day, no one cares whether or not you’re in a fraternity or sorority, and not joining won’t change how people see you.

If you’re coming to NU and feeling worried about not having a social life or missing out on good experiences if you don’t join Greek Life, I can relate. But there’s not only one single way to “do” Northwestern or be a student here, and Greek Life isn’t the only way to have a good time while in college.

How to navigate fraternities, rush

Many students come into college with preconceived notions about Greek life and “frat bros.”

The rush process is designed to give those people an opportunity to see if those stereotypes hold up at Northwestern.

NU’s Interfraternity Council, or IFC, includes 16 active chapters, thus providing a variety of different fraternity atmospheres for students to look into. Fraternity recruitment at NU doesn’t have the same structure as sorority rush, but there’s still a designated schedule that allows for anyone to participate in rush events.

For Wildcat Welcome and the first two weeks of the school year, fraternities aren’t allowed to hold official recruiting events. But with over 40 percent of NU students involved in Greek life, freshmen will meet people in those first three weeks who are involved.

On the third Sunday of fall quarter, fraternity rush officially opens with Sunday Night Dinners.

These dinners continue throughout fall quarter, with half of the chapters hosting a dinner each week, and the other half hosting the following week.

The dinners are a great opportunity to get to know the members of a given fraternity and understand the culture of the various chapters.

Also, they’re a great opportunity to eat some free food, so it’s really a win-win situation.

The dinners are held at the various fraternity on-campus houses on north campus. Just south of Patten Gym and north of the Technological Institute lie 13 of the 16 fraternity houses at Northwestern. With Alpha Epsilon Pi (known commonly as AEPi) at the northern end and Phi Kappa Psi at the southern end, the quad encompasses the majority of the fraternities at NU. As for the other three fraternities, Delta Chi is located just across Sheridan Road from Patten, Evan’s Scholars is on the southern half of campus located on the west end of the sorority quad,

while Phi Mu Alpha is located in the middle of the sorority quad.

Many of these fraternities, in addition to the Sunday Night Dinners, will host an event during Thanksgiving Week in which some potential new members are invited. People invited to these events are usually good bets to receive a bid to the fraternity which invites them.

The first week of winter quarter, fraternities can officially admit new members, and they will hold events all week as the brothers in each chapter decide who would be a good fit to join their organization.

Throughout this week, fraternities host events at the houses. Events earlier in the week are open to anyone, but by Thursday and Friday, these events usually become invite-only as chapters narrow the field of potential brothers.

Explaining NU sororities, preview, bids

Northwestern offers women the opportunity to be part of a sorority, a sisterhood devoted to a specific philanthropic cause and to promoting a core set of unique values.

Greek life is a prominent — though not dominating — part of the university’s social culture.

About 39 percent of female undergraduates are members of one of the 12 sororities overseen by the Panhellenic Association, or PHA. The sorority rush process kicks off in November with an all-day “preview” of formal recruitment. Women looking to participate in the recruitment process can attend the event, although it is not mandatory.

Recruitment preview off ers potential new members a sneak peek of the formal recruitment process. During the preview, women visit all twelve sorority houses, where they can to speak to current members and listen to a presentation about the character of the sorority.

The preview also gives those interested in joining a sorority the chance to meet their designated recruitment counselor before formal recruitment. The recruitment counselor is a deactivated member of a sorority who will guide potential new members in a small group through the rush process.

While preview may seem long and arduous — twelve sororities are visited in one day — it’s a warm-up for rush itself.

Formal recruitment takes place over the course of six days during the first week of winter quarter and is divided into two sets: preference night and bid night. During each set, the number of sororities women visit are narrowed down until one bid is received.

Rush occurs in the depth of the Chicago winter and parading in and out of sorority houses is a brief respite from the elements. Potential new members must brave the weather — especially those who live on north campus.

The sorority quad is located at the south end of Northwestern’s campus between University Place and Emerson Street, stretching from Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta at the easternmost end to Delta Zeta on the westernmost.

Although socializing is an aspect of Greek life, it is not the sole purpose. Each sorority dedicates time and effort to supporting a specific philanthropic cause and every house participates in the legendary Dance Marathon. amelialangas@u.northwestern.edu

Multicultural Greek organizations augment IFC, PHA

Although IFC and PHA are the most wellknown Greek associations on campus, Northwestern also has two other Greek councils that contain smaller fraternities and sororities geared towards greater ethnic and racial diversity.

Two fraternities (Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi) and three sororities (Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho) compose the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which is traditionally oriented towards black students.

In addition to their defining characteristic of diversity, these multicultural Greek chapters also differ from their IFC and PHA counterparts in terms of size, housing and national organization.

The largest single NPHC chapter has just 10 members and the largest MGC chapter has 25 — a small fraction of the larger IFC and PHA organizations. NPHC and MGC organizations do not have designated on-campus

houses, either, instead holding chapter meetings and social events in various rented-out rooms.

Many students find the smaller chapter sizes rewarding, Martin said, and the two councils have some plans to make themselves more visible to the student body this year, such a joint dance performance at Tech on Friday, Sept. 22 as part of Greek Weekend.

Rush diff ers somewhat between each different NPHC and MGC chapter because the ‘Multicultural Greek organization’ recruitment process is not structured or guided by the University, Martin said. Because of their lower membership totals, however, most NPHC and MGC chapters admit new members at the beginning of every quarter, Martin said.

Interested students should reach out to chapters individually or attend a recruitment or outreach event, which the organizations schedule themselves.

Take in that newsprint musk. Press your nose all up in it. Don’t be afraid to get ink on your face. Smell that lovely Daily Northwestern smell. It can only mean one thing: You’re almost here. College!

Tim Balk: I remember receiving my Orientation Issue prior to freshman year and at first being confused about why I had been sent it and then spending far too much time reading recommendations for engineering students as they entered McCormick.

Shane: Same, though I still can’t find that Einstein’s. (Where the hell is Pancoe anyway?)

It can be a bit overwhelming, this summer before freshman year. You’re inundated with things to read, forms to fill out, online alcohol modules to fudge. I don’t blame you if you skip this column. You have so much else to do.

Tim: And, to be truthful, this column likely won’t impart life-changing advice. Nor necessarily will this issue. College is somewhat of a learn-by-doing process. But we’re going to endeavor to spitball some thoughts about what your advisers may not necessarily tell you during Wildcat Welcome. Quaecomque sunt vera, as they say. Amiright, Shane?

Shane: Oh indubitably, Tim. But to preface our meditation, I’d like to offer the best advice I ever received, which went something like this: “Advice can be helpful. But beware: Someone may offer advice they cherish, but they might cherish it only because it justifies their own life path, decisions, bad breaks and so on.” The struggles that defined my freshman year no doubt influence what advice I hold dear and pass on. But your first year will diverge from ours. So be forewarned.

Tim: I like that. The best advice I’ve ever received was not to leave the car engine on while I filled up the tank.

Shane: Oh! One more nugget of advice.

There’s Norbucks on campus, there’s Sherbucks on Sherman Avenue and there’s Starbucks on Dempster Street and Chicago Avenue further afield.

The cool kids (and by that I mean me) go to Dempster, the semi-cool kids go to Sherbucks, and the bums (also me) go to Norbucks. The really cool kids go to the independently owned coffee shops in Evanston, like The Brothers K way down Hinman Avenue by Main Street.

(Note: there are actually multiple other Starbucks in Evanston, including one on Main and one on Central Avenue, but I haven’t been to them so I don’t acknowledge their existence.)

Northwestern can be an intensely extracurricular place.

You might spend more time in a week on extracurricular work than academic work.

Shane: Well said. This reminds me. Class of 2021 (plus transfers! We haven’t forgotten you! We love the transfers!) if you want to leave your mark on Northwestern, I have a small request: Let’s start calling the Starbucks on Dempster, the one farthest from campus, Farbucks. Because it’s farther away. Far. Bucks.

It’s a portmanteau, see? Tim, your thoughts.

Tim: Hm. I don’t think enough NU students go to it to demand its own nickname … but perhaps this seminal column will change that?

Shane: Well, a tradition has to start somewhere. Sometimes you need to suffer a few weeks or months of a new tradition seeming contrived and corny, the cool kids using it only ironically, before eventually the cocoon of ironic distance falls away, and into the NUlexicon springs the sort of bonafide campus quirk we all love. Take March Through the Arch. That tradition only began in 2009.

Tim: True. There’s also a boatload of traditions and elements on campus that are deeply entrenched in the culture of the school. We’ve got Greek Life, with its century-old history, and Dance Marathon, and clubs that go way back like The Daily itself. Which perhaps brings us to the pesky extracurriculars, with all their benefits and their flaws, that often come to be the most meaningful aspects of students’ times at NU. Shane, any thoughts on navigating the terrain of our school’s bustling world of groups and clubs?

Shane: This seems to be one thing they don’t tell you on the brochure. Northwestern can be an intensely extracurricular place. You might spend more time in a week on extracurricular work than academic work. If you choose that life, that is. You will feel pressured to get involved, and it’s your choice how to respond.

(Tim and I may overstate NU’s extracurricularness because we work at The Daily, where in past quarters we have logged 40-hour weeks working late nights in this newsroom over pints of Ben & Jerry’s and bitter Keurig coffee. And we loved it.)

Tim: Oh absolutely, but I would also stress that many student groups demand a great deal of students’ time, from the drinking commitments of North Campus fraternities to the demands of mock trial or debate team to our sometimes intense student government. Of course, it’s entirely possible to have an experience light on extracurriculars at NU too.

Shane: Agreed. I had a few quarters where I spent most of my nights at The Daily. But you know what I’m taking next quarter? Russian Lit. Creative nonfiction. An English class about radio essays. A theatre class (theatre!) about storytelling. Going to spend less time in the newsroom. Instead, it’ll be a quarter of fascinating topics and engaging professors.

That’s a perk of the quarter system: You can switch up your commitments pretty quickly.

Tim: Things move fast at NU. In my experience, it’s helpful if you can try to avoid being overly sped up. One common refrain on our campus that has never really resonated with me is that we’re a “work hard, play hard” student body. I think that’s a lot of pressure, and there’s an expectation that folks go hard in and out of the classroom. But it can also be a bit of a myth. It’s entirely possible not to go out multiple nights a week or pull lots of all-nighters studying and writing papers. And, when you get down it, you shouldn’t feel like you’re missing out if you don’t conform to that frankly silly stereotype. On the contrary, my only real advice to freshmen — aside from turning off the car at the pump — is just do you.

Shane: Well said, Tim. Just do you. That’s easier said than done. Here’s my advice: In the coming months, new students, you will pick up your phone and stare into Facebook, or Instagram, or Snapchat, and you will see photos of old friends. High school friends, say.

State Sen. Biss launches run for governor

Evanston Democrat is among several seeking to unseat Republican incumbent

In late March of this year, State Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) announced the launch of his campaign for the 2018 Illinois gubernatorial race.

An Evanston native who earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Biss has built his campaign on a progressive platform. He said aims to fight President Donald Trump’s policies, restore funding for child care, health care and education and “take back” the state from billionaires.

Biss has sponsored legislation to reform campaign finance, improve retirement savings plans and require presidential candidates to release their tax returns. He has been an active member of the Senate since 2013 and previously served in the Illinois House of Representatives.

This summer, Biss helped sponsor a bill that would prevent health insurance companies from denying coverage or giving higher premiums to those with pre-existing conditions. Although this practice is currently prohibited, Biss chose to act in response to the uncertainty regarding health care in Washington.

The bill passed both the Illinois House and Senate on May 31 and is awaiting Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s approval.

Biss has been a vocal critic of Rauner, especially criticizing his handling of the budget crisis that engulfed the state for two fiscal years.

Illinois was able to pass a budget in July after lawmakers overrode Rauner’s veto.

Regarding Trump’s immigration ban, Biss has made it clear that he supports Illinois as a “welcoming” state.

“Municipalities across the state should pass welcoming ordinances … but the state needs to do that too; we should pass a law to protect people from (Trump’s) unethical actions,” Biss said in March.

Biss is part of a crowded Democratic field that also includes Chicago Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th), philanthropist J.B. Pritzker and businessman Chris Kennedy. The Democratic gubernatorial primary will take place in March.

Police actions in Crosby case make waves

A video depicting the 2015 arrest of Northwestern graduate student Lawrence Crosby for stealing his own car left Evanston reeling this past year, as the story spread across national and international media.

The footage — released on Jan. 12 in the midst of an ongoing lawsuit against the city — shows police slamming Crosby on the ground after he steps unprompted out of his car. The incident caused community members to call for reform and led to changes in Evanston Police Department practices.

“Disturbing doesn’t do justice to the impact of watching that,” University President Morton Schapiro told The Daily in an interview.

Following the video’s release, EPD Sgt. Dennis Leaks said police would “no longer require subjects to be prone during these types of stops, as we acknowledge and realize that there are some problematic issues that come with that: locations of the stop, weather conditions, and it gives a bad perception.”

The contentious arrest also sparked a larger debate about proper procedure and racial bias in Evanston — where some residents said police unnecessarily escalate routine scenarios and treat minorities differently. Former Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl told The Daily earlier this year that Evanston does have a “cultural problem” concerning race, as do most cities across the country.

But EPD Chief Richard Eddington said he does not believe his department has an issue with race.

“We have sergeants, commanders and deputy chiefs of color,” Eddington told The Daily earlier this year. “I find it unfathomable that any of them would tolerate racist behavior.” davidpkfishman@u.northwestern.edu

Controversy stirs Evanston Public Library

Popular librarian Lesley Williams resigned from the Evanston Public Library in June following two suspensions and disciplinary hearings in recent months.

Williams had been suspended from the library once in April and again in June — decisions that prompted outcry and protests from Evanston residents. Williams, EPL’s only full-time black librarian, had spoken often about issues of equity at the library and her supporters continued to call for a full-scale equity audit.

“The current hostile atmosphere and mistrust would make it impossible for me to continue to be effective,” Williams said in announcing her resignation.

Prior to her departure, a Freedom of Information Act request had revealed a series of documents and emails that appeared to show that EPL officials wanted to terminate Williams for years. The documents included a 2015 performance evaluation of EPL Director Karen Danczak Lyons praising Danczak Lyons for her work, but expressing concern about Williams and disappointment that she had not yet been fired.

An unidentified board member who completed the 2015 evaluation said the “Williams situation remains festering and unresolved to the disappointment of the Board,” while another remarked on her “continued adversarial and incorrigible attitude.”

Following Williams’ resignation, Danczak Lyons said in July that EPL will be hiring an outside equity consultant to conduct the assessment. Danczak Lyons said she has met with seven possible consultants, but no specific names were mentioned.

She said it is important that the chosen consultant have personal experience with diversity that they can “bring to the table” to encourage dialogue.

The consultant will work in conjunction with EPL and the City of Evanston to suggest ways that the library can promote diversity and equity, Danczak Lyons said. She said the process will be “open, communicative and collaborative,” and the results of the assessment will be publicly shared. kristinakarisch2020@u.northwestern.edu

Government guide: The people who represent you What to know about ASG on campus, plus local city officials working in Evanston

Associated Student Government is the student government at Northwestern. ASG operates in a number of different ways, including passing resolutions through a Senate, meeting with administrators on behalf of students and allocating funds to a number of student groups.

Weinberg seniors Nehaarika Mulukutla and Rosalie Gambrah are the current ASG president and executive vice president, respectively.

After winning the first uncontested election in institutional memory, the pair took office in the spring.

ASG Senate meets every Wednesday, and is presided over by the speaker of the senate, Weinberg senior Daniella Lumpkin, and the parliamentarian, SESP junior Justine Kim. Senators represent student groups or residential districts on and off campus. Senate can pass resolutions urging administrators to make specific changes, such as a resolution passed last Winter Quarter regarding accountability for sexual assault.

Another main function of ASG is to allocate funds it receives through the student activities fee.

In order to do this, ASG has two committees, the A-status funding committee and the B-status funding committee. The A-status committee deals with larger student groups like Mayfest, A&O Productions and Dance Marathon, while the B-status committee deals with smaller groups. After both committees make recommendations on how much money each student group should receive, Senate approves the amounts and can add or subtract money from a group.

In Town

City Council is the elected body of Evanston that makes governing decisions regarding a number of issues around the city.

Council is comprised of aldermen from each of Evanston’s nine wards, and is presided over by the mayor.

The current mayor, Steve Hagerty, was elected in April 2017 with a narrow victory of fewer than 200 votes over former alderman Mark Tendam.

This followed an expensive campaign cycle that saw five candidates vie to replace two-term mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, who chose not to run for reelection.

During his campaign, Hagerty focused on three major issues: improving affordable housing opportunities to maintain the city’s diversity, expanding economic development across the city and strengthening youth development programs to reduce violence. He will have until 2021 to implement potential changes.

The 1st and 7th wards — the wards that encompass the Northwestern campus — are represented by Ald. Judy Fiske (1st) and Ald. Eleanor Revelle (7th). Fiske, the incumbent, beat out challenger Lee Cabot to retain her seat in April, while Revelle ran unopposed.

Fiske, now in her third term as alderman, said during her campaign for reelection that she wanted to prioritize responsible economic development in the ward as a way to make progress toward solving the area’s other problems. She said communication with her residents has been a priority throughout her tenure to ensure their voices are heard.

Revelle has focused on sustainability efforts since being sworn in as an alderman early last year.

We’ve got the inside scoop on NU’s requisite vernacular

CAESAR — An online system used by students to register for classes, check transcripts, and pay bills. Due to its oft-criticized design and old-fashioned functionality, many times you must verify your login with a phone call before accessing the online portal. It may seem like you’ll spend more time enrolling for classes than in the classes themselves.

Distro — A class that counts for a distribution requirement. Weinberg mandates a specific minimum number of classes from various different areas of study.

Fitz — Football coach Pat Fitzgerald. An AllAmerican linebacker during his playing days in Evanston, Fitz is beloved around campus. He’s known to hand out hot dogs and pizza to students who arrive early to football games.

Canvas — Your online go-to when it comes to class notifications including assignments, grades, and power points.

Grand Allison Hotel — One of the most sought-after residences on campus, widely known for its large dining hall, luxury and huge rooms. If you’re on Snapchat, you can easily find the Grand Allison Hotel geotag as well.

CTECs — A Northwestern-centric professor evaluation site. Evaluations are submitted through CAESAR at the end of each quarter and allow students to examine other students’ reviews of courses.

Hot Cookie Bar — A delicious dessert consisting of half-baked cookie dough in many flavors, often accompanied by many additional toppings like hot fudge, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

Served every Friday night in the dining halls.

Darty — Day parties, often held at an offcampus location. These daytime soirees may or may not require a text for entry.

Lakefill — Northwestern’s crown jewel. The Lakefill refers to the grassy area along Lake Michigan, behind Norris University Center. It’s a common spot for students to come hang out, go for a jog, take pictures, or study and “Lakechill.”

The Deuce — A popular Thursday night destination for NU underclassmen officially known as the Mark II Lounge. The Deuce, located in the nearby Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, is not known for its luxury but does offer attractive drink specials. Open nightly until 4 a.m.

Morty — University President Morton Schapiro. Beloved on campus, Morty is usually spotted wearing a dash of purple. Make sure to snag a picture with him — he’s already taken one with Kanye West.

Norbucks — The Starbucks on the first floor of Norris. As your average Starbucks, it is a location of choice for many “study” dates, meetings, and caffeine replenishments (it’s open daily, late into the evening on most nights). Keep in mind: Starbucks in Norris is different from the Starbucks on Sherman Avenue in downtown Evanston, which many students also frequent.

NUMB — Northwestern University Marching Band. It helps to rile up the student section during football and basketball games.

Peer Adviser — Your guide to campus during Wildcat Welcome. Your PA is the only person who will proudly parade you around campus and not judge you when you say you live in “McCulloch Hall,” (both Bobb and McCulloch are generally known as Bobb) and be a go-to resource and friend during your freshman year.

Plex — The common term for the Foster-Walker Complex residence hall. It’s a popular dorm for sophomore and junior students due to its vast number of single rooms, and contains two dining halls known for their themed days — Italian on Monday, Mexican on Tuesday, stir fry on Wednesday, and so on.

At exactly 9 p.m., students open their windows and scream to release the impending stress of final exams.

The best places to hear this happen are in the sorority quad and around Main Library.

Reading Week — The week just before Finals Week, when Weinberg classes are not held and students are expected to study in order to prepare for final exams. For many students, however, it’s a week of procrastination before studying begins in earnest.

The Rock — Located next to University Hall on South Campus, the rock often advertises happenings of different student groups on campus. According to tradition, students must guard the rock for 24 hours prior to painting anything on it, and must paint it at midnight.

SafeRide — A free, Northwestern-run car service that provides a safe alternative to walking home at night any time from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. within Evanston.

SPAC — The commonly used term for the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center, which contains NU’s largest gym, the pool and The Garage.

Pregame — A social gathering prior to an event in which you responsibly hang out with fellow students going to the same event.

Tech — The everyday term for the Technological Institute. This massive North Campus building is the home of many McCormick and other science classes.

Primal Scream — A strange tradition that happens every quarter on the Sunday before finals week.

Tips to traverse the city’s tricky transit

Chicago is a massive place — so big, in fact, that it can take longer to ride the metro train (known as the “El,” short

for “elevated”) across the city than to drive from Evanston to Milwaukee.

Fortunately, the Chicago Transit Authority, or CTA, offers a variety of cheap mass-transit options to navigate the nation’s third-most populous city.

And for shorter trips around or between Northwestern campuses, the University also offers several convenient bus routes that are free for students.

The El

Eight train lines servicing 145 stops throughout Chicago and some suburbs provide an effective, if sometimes slow, way to get just about anywhere.

Here are the most important things for an NU student to know about Chicago’s enormous train network: Purple Line — Services Evanston, including stops at Davis (downtown), Foster and Noyes (just west of campus) and Central (for Ryan Field). During weekday rush hours, it runs “express,” skipping a string of intermediate stops, stopping in “the Loop” in downtown Chicago.

Red Line — Spans Chicago from its northern border to the far reaches of the South Side. When the Purple Line isn’t running express, you’ll have to transfer to the Red Line at Howard to get anywhere in Chicago. Notable stops include Fullerton (DePaul University and a major station for train transfers), Chicago (Navy Pier) and Lake (middle of downtown Chicago).

Get to the airport — Transfer at one of several stops in the Loop to get to either O’Hare Airport via the Blue Line (although, as you’ll see below, there’s a faster way) or Midway Airport via the Orange Line.

Take in some sports — Both Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs) and Guaranteed Rate Field (Chicago White Sox) are accessible via the Red Line at Addison and Sox-35th, respectively. Soldier Field and the Chicago Bears aren’t far from the Red Line’s Roosevelt stop. And for Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls games at the United Center, ride either the Pink Line or Green Line to Ashland.

How tickets work — One-way tickets are $2.25

and can be purchased at any station. If you plan to ride frequently and want to save time, buy a Ventra Card, which lets you load cash from a phone app or vending machines at every station. It operates like a CTA debit card.

Public buses

CTA 201 bus — A free and convenient way to get around Evanston. Catch it for a quick ride up or down Sheridan Road when you don’t want to walk from Tech to the Arch, save an Uber fare going to an NU baseball or softball game, or satisfy your shopping craving by going to the Old Orchard mall in Skokie. The 201 runs regularly during the day and early evening Monday through Saturday; just show your Wildcard to the driver when you board.

Pace 250 Bus — The less well-known but most economical way to get to O’Hare. It’s faster than taking the train — from the Purple Line to the Red Line to the Blue Line — and at only $2, it’s much cheaper than an Uber. Catch it from outside the Davis CTA station.

Northwestern buses

Campus Loop — An evening shuttle that travels in both directions from Norris University Center and along Sheridan Road to the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion. It’s perfect for heading home after a long night at the library or elsewhere on campus.

Runs 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. nightly, though service starts at 6 p.m. in the winter.

Evanston Loop — Similar to the Campus Loop, the Evanston Loop — which begins at 6 p.m. all year long — services many residential and business areas in the city. Tip: both the campus and Evanston loops run during the day in extreme weather conditions, like when temperatures fall into the single digits.

Intercampus Shuttle — This shuttle ostensibly connects the Evanston and Chicago campuses, but it also offers students a free and efficient way to get downtown on weekdays. Running regularly from early morning through evening, the Intercampus stops frequently in Evanston and drops off and picks up a bit north of the Loop, near famed Michigan Avenue. Only one Northwestern team played for a national championship last year: women’s golf.

The Wildcats battled Arizona State in the final match after playing six spectacular rounds in the preceding days, featuring a dominant stroke play performance and a stirring semifinal comeback against USC. And they’re almost all back for another run at the title this year.

Senior Hannah Kim is two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and the undisputed star of the team. Always dominant in the regular season, Kim’s postseason play hadn’t been up to her own superstar expectations, but last year’s national championship performance altered that narrative and she’ll be back this year looking to lead the squad over that final hurdle.

While Kim is the headliner, fellow senior Sarah Cho is her consistent counterpart, putting up great performances week in and week out. Juniors Stephanie Lau and Janet Mao are the dynamic tag team that can either catalyze a national championship run or jeopardize the Cats’ standing. Both of those things happened last year.

In May, Northwestern was a single stroke from a national championship appearance. At their NCAA Regional, the Wildcats were tied with Jacksonville after three rounds for the fifth and final qualification spot.

NU came up just short after a disastrous second playoff hole, and the Cats had to settle for the best season for the program since 2011, where the team made it to nationals.

Two years ago, even that would’ve been unthinkable, as NU didn’t even qualify for a regional appearance in 2015 after finishing seventh in the Big Ten Championships. The main catalyst in the turnaround: senior Dylan Wu, who enters his final year in Evanston having been the best golfer on the squad in each of the previous three years.

Junior Ryan Lumsden joined Wu at the top of the lineup, and his breakout season allowed the Cats to surpass outside expectations for the season. While Wu and Lumsden — along with sophomore Everton Hawkins — remain, NU will have to replace seniors Conor Richardson and Andrew Whalen.

The two veterans were key contributors to the Cats lineup last year, and coach David Inglis may need to juggle his lineup to determine which group of golfers can best attempt to push NU over the hump and reach nationals.

With Tourney berth, NU’s 2017 season made history

Disappointment has characterized the Northwestern men’s basketball program for the bulk of its century-plus history; the Wildcats lost and lost big through most of the 20th century, largely serving as a doormat for their Big Ten brethren.

And as of just several months ago, the program had never made an NCAA Tournament, a marker of disrepute it shared with zero other major college basketball programs.

Then came along last year’s feisty defenseoriented squad, which set a program record for wins and ended the school’s 78-year tournament drought in one spellbinding season.

It all started without much fanfare. The undersized Cats entered the season with modest expectations. And a lawsuit filed in November by former player Johnnie Vassar alleging mistreatment by coach Chris Collins’ program cast a pall over the season’s early going.

On the court, though, the Cats heated up in non-conference play, winning 11 of their first 13 games. Whispers of a first-ever March Madness appearance grew audible by the end of December, when NU turned its focus to Big Ten play.

The Cats continued to roll in conference play, winning seven of nine while the whispers swelled into a roar. NU punctuated the stretch with a resounding home win over Indiana that pushed the Cats into the national polls.

But in February, on the doorstep of history, the team suddenly sputtered. Guard Scottie Lindsey,

who had paced the squad in scoring up to that point, found himself sidelined by sickness. And another of the team’s leading scorers, forward Vic Law, endured a nightmare shooting slump.

NU’s captain and leader, Bryant McIntosh, stepped up valiantly amid the difficulty, even exploding for a 25-point performance in a surprise win at Wisconsin on Feb. 12. Still, the rough patch left the Cats teetering toward the edge of the Tournament bubble by month’s end, even with Lindsey back in action.

On the first day of March, the Cats hosted a surging Michigan team with two regular season games remaining, needing one more resume-caliber win to all but seal a place in the NCAAs. The game proved an instant classic, with the two teams matching each other punch-for-punch.

The Welsh-Ryan Arena student section flooded onto the court in euphoria. Northwestern was finally going to The Dance.

The Cats went on to win two games in the Big Ten Tournament before earning a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. There, for good measure, they knocked off Vanderbilt in the first round before succumbing to eventual national runner-up Gonzaga two days later.

When campus celebrated the team’s inaugural tourney visit on Selection Sunday, Collins looked forward, saying the day represented “the beginning of Northwestern basketball.” The Cats now seek to build on that foundation. timothybalk2018@u.northwestern.edu

Experienced lineup sets up Cats for repeat season

This year, most of the key players from last year’s history-making team are returning for an encore, and the bar will be set even higher following the team’s debut at The Dance.

Challenges await as Northwestern eyes a return trip to tournament, however — chief among them that the Cats will play their home games at farflung Allstate Arena in Rosemont as Welsh-Ryan Arena undergoes renovation. The roughly 45-minute ride from campus to the facility may put a dent in the attendance surge that accompanied last year’s team.

But other obstacles, which include replacing graduated forwards Sanjay Lumpkin and Nathan Taphorn, and perhaps braving the tempestuous waters of an improved Big Ten, should still do little to reduce high expectations for a squad that returns its most important contributors.

Senior point guard Bryant McIntosh is back to lead the way, working on one of the best careers of

any floor general in school history. He struggled early last season, but recovered in conference play and turned in a prime-time performance in the Cats’ win over Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 64.

Back too are the team’s go-to scorer, senior guard Scottie Lindsey, and best defender, junior forward Vic Law. The improvement of both wings proved crucial in lifting NU into The Dance last year.

All told, the Cats return their top five scorers from the 2016-17 squad: McIntosh, Lindsey, Law, Pardon and backup point guard Isiah Brown.

Coach Chris Collins will have more depth around that nucleus, thanks to the return of hotshooting sophomore forward Aaron Falzon from a knee injury that sidelined him last season. Falzon’s presence should help the Cats improve an offensive attack that spun its wheels at times last season.

Role players including sophomore center Barret Benson and senior forward Gavin Skelly are back too. And expectations are high for 6-foot-9 redshirt freshman Rapolas Ivanauskas, who missed last season due to injury.

Students may find themselves struggling through rush-hour Chicagoland traffic to get to some games this winter, but the payoff for their efforts will be the chance to watch an exciting team that, on paper, appears capable of another run to March Madness. timothybalk2018@u.northwestern.edu

In Shane Davis’ first year as head coach in 2016, Northwestern struggled to compete in the Big Ten, a perennial volleyball juggernaut. Going into his second, the Wildcats could be set up for another rebuilding year.

NU will return arguably its three best players from last season, the only three seniors on its roster: outside hitter Symone Abbott, setter Taylor Tashima and middle blocker Gabrielle Hazen. Abbott finished last season fourth in the Big Ten in kills per set with 4.1, while Tashima finished 11th in assists per set with 9.0.

There could be a lot of new faces for the Cats as Davis brings in his first recruiting class. At libero,

sophomore Sarah Johnson will fight to keep her starting job away from fellow sophomore Emily Ehman, freshman Amy Wang and freshman Lexi Pitsas. Sophomore outside hitter Allie Lindroth, who earned more playing time at the end of last season, could also see her role expanded in her second season.

In somewhat of a coup for the program, Davis secured the commitment of outside hitter Nia Robinson, the Gatorade Player of the Year from Indiana.

Due to the renovations to Welsh-Ryan Arena, NU will play home games at Evanston Township High School this season. The Cats will face a particularly daunting stretch at the end of the season, facing Big Ten foes Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska — which were the top three teams in the country in the final rankings last season — during a threegame homestand. jonahdylan2020@u.northwestern.edu

After two failed attempts to return to the NCAA Tournament with arguably the best class in program history, the Wildcats enter an era of uncertainty with neither established stars nor a bona fide home floor.

Following a 2015-16 campaign in which Northwestern nosedived to the bottom of the Big Ten and a trying 2016-17 season marked by the midseason death of sophomore guard Jordan Hankins, coach Joe McKeown has few of the weapons necessary to bring the Cats back up the conference standings.

Sophomore forward Abi Scheid and junior guard Amber Jamison are promising returners, and likely to be the best players on the floor for NU. Scheid averaged 5.0 points per game last season from the

frontcourt, while Jamison reached double-figures in five consecutive games in January and could assume ball-handling responsibilities.

Still, Scheid and Jamison were little more than role players in comparison to the Cats’ standout seniors, who accounted for more than three-quarters of NU’s scoring last season. Neither top underclassman has been the focus of opponents’ gameplans, and they are untested in high-pressure situations.

Just three other returnees — senior guard Lydia Rohde, senior center Oceana Hamilton and junior forward Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah — saw regular playing time last year. McKeown does bring in three highly-touted guards and assembled the best recruiting class in the Big Ten, according to ESPN, but none of the freshmen are expected to be immediate game-changers.

Though much of the conference is likely to again be unspectacular, the Cats’ dearth of top-level players and recent history of underachievement make expectations low for a season at Evanston Township High School.

Cats pursue another Big Ten crown Minus stars,

A year after making history by earning a share of the conference title, Northwestern has a prime opportunity to again ascend to the Big Ten mantle.

The Wildcats return many of the standouts that brought them their first conference crown, including senior defender Kassidy Gorman, junior defender Kayla Sharples and All-American senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem. Given NU’s reliance on defensive domination last season, the strong core of defensive-minded returners is a dangerous recipe for the rest of the Big Ten.

The Cats were jaw-droppingly airtight at the back last season, recording seven straight shutouts in September and keeping five consecutive league opponents off the scoreboard later in the season.

NU allowed multiple goals just once all season and led the country by a large margin with a .290 goals against average.

And the most influential players from that success return.

Gorman and Sharples are the biggest names on a back four that returns intact, and Clem’s .927 save percentage topped the nation. Senior Nikia Smith and junior Hannah Davidson were no slouches either: both played in every game in 2016; Davidson started every one.

Though the Cats earned their maiden Big Ten crown, spent much of the season ranked

in the top 25 and won a pair of matches in the NCAA Tournament, they nonetheless enter 2017 with concerns.

Scoring was a significant issue for NU, which scored multiple goals just once in its last nine games and tallied four scoreless draws.

Co-leading scorers Gorman and junior midfielder Brenna Lovera return, but it remains to be seen if coach Michael Moynihan can improve his team’s finishing ability.

A handful of players have graduated, including do-it-all midfielder Nandi Mehta and fulltime starter Kaitlin Moore, and Moynihan brings in only one can’t-miss recruit. Still, last season’s accomplishments and the returning stars have expectations in Evanston high.

Northwestern’s men’s soccer team will have to answer a number of questions offensively in 2017 after a historically poor 2016 campaign.

The Wildcats went 6-11-1 and ranked last in the Big Ten in both goals per game (0.83) and shots per game (9.5) last fall. Only four players scored multiple goals all year and three of those players — everyone except now-senior forward Elo Ozumba — have since graduated.

Considering how sluggish the offense was, however, that high level of turnover might not be bad news, instead giving other players opportunities to become more meaningful contributors.

center backs will need to be replaced, but NU should have two excellent defensive midfielders to mask the weakness: sophomore Mattias Tomasino, a member of the Big Ten’s all-freshman team last year, and senior transfer Rouven Wahlfeldt, formerly a three-year stalwart at UNC-Greensboro.

Senior goalkeeper Francisco Tomasino, who ranked second in the conference in saves per game last season, should have a secure hold on his starting job.

The results of an August road trip through Missouri-Kansas City, Colgate and Syracuse could give a good indication of the strength of this year’s team.

Northwestern enters the 2017 season with a plethora of returning talent but must fill the shoes of two historically accomplished scorers, leaving it uncertain whether the Wildcats can avoid the NCAA Tournament near-misses that have caused heartbreak each of the last two seasons.

Gone are Isabel Flens, a technically savvy midfielder who earned second-team AllAmerica honors in 2016 and ended her career fourth on NU’s all-time scoring chart, and Dominique Masters, a relentless and versatile forward who matched Flens at fourth all-time with 52 goals.

The Cats must also replace goaltender Lindsay von der Luft, a solid if unspectacular two-year starter.

NU returns nearly everyone else, however, including 13-goal scorer Pascale Massey and defensive leader Sophia Miller, who, in their senior seasons, are the most obvious candidates to replace the void in leadership. Massey in particular could become a major scoring force, as she is now fully recovered from serious injuries that cost her much of two seasons.

The Cats return as many as five more regular starters from last year, and coach Tracey Fuchs brings in a highly-touted recruiting class. Still, NU begins its season without any true stars, and that could make life difficult for the Cats in a rigorous Big Ten — where reigning conference champion Maryland has knocked them out of playoff contention the past two years— and pose a major challenge for a team trying to scrape into the NCAA Tournament field.

The 6-foot-4, 226-pound Thorson took a major step forward in his second year under center, nearly doubling his number of passing yards from 2015 and tossing 22 touchdowns. With continued improvement, Thorson could break into the Big Ten elite in his junior season, but he’ll no longer have ultra-reliable wide receiver Austin Carr at his side and will need to work around an at-times iffy offensive line.

Hall, who has started most of the last two seasons, is the closest thing NU has to an experienced veteran at linebacker. He was quietly consistent in 2016, finishing third on the team in tackles, though his play will need to be amplified this fall given the year-early departure of star Anthony Walker and the Cats’ extreme inexperience at the position.

DEFENSE

Gaziano is likely to enter the season as the only NU player who recorded multiple sacks last year, given Xavier Washington’s drugrelated arrest and suspension in the spring.

The former Massachusetts Player of the Year in high school tallied 4.5 sacks last season — including a highlight-reel safety against Michigan State — in a reserve role, but the Cats will need him to assume a larger role along the line as he steps into the starting lineup and leads an untested pass rush unit.

The student section at Ryan Field is again likely to chant “Justin Jackson, the ball carrier” dozens of times, as the workhorse back rolls towards NU’s all-time rushing yards mark.

A Big Ten-best 1,524 yards last year and a 224-yard, three-touchdown performance in the Pinstripe Bowl set him up well for a superb final season in Evanston.

With Carr moving on to the NFL and no wide receiver clearly ready to become a bona fide No. 1 option, the Cats believe Dickerson, a tight end hybrid player, is primed for a big senior season. A five-catch effort in the Pinstripe Bowl, which included the gamewinning touchdown, displayed Dickerson’s pass-catching ability, though he is best as a blocker.

Igwebuike may have just one interception in the last two seasons, but the star of the defense makes his mark in other ways. He led NU in tackles last year, prowled the line of scrimmage for 5.5 tackles for loss and provided a reliable secondary presence on the Cats’ 23rd-ranked scoring defense. On a unit with several fresh faces, expect Igwebuike and fellow senior safety Kyle Queiro to be rocks in the back.

Cats primed for strong, breakout year

The tenure of Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern has transformed the school’s football program from laughingstock into perennially competitive Big Ten foe.

As a player, Fitzgerald led the Wildcats’ miraculous 1995 run to the Rose Bowl, ending a streak of 23 consecutive seasons with a losing record. And since taking over as head coach in 2006, “Fitz,” as he is affectionately known, has become by far the winningest coach in NU history, tripled the team’s number of all-time bowl wins (from one to three) and led the Cats to two 10-3 seasons in the past five years.

The coming 2017 season has a chance, however, to be one of the best of Fitzgerald’s time to date.

His 2016 team recovered from a disastrous start to win six of its last nine games, including an upset of favored Pittsburgh in the Pinstripe Bowl, and 17 of its 22 starters return this year — a level of continuity that Fitzgerald said he hopes will help them avoid a repeat of last September’s slow start.

This fall, the Cats have six home games between Wildcat Welcome and Thanksgiving Break — make sure to appreciate that, because they had only four in that time period last year. The frequent 11 a.m. starts (because of East Coast-centric television schedules) can also be annoying as a fan, but given the talent and potential for success of this season, a few early mornings should be worth stomaching in exchange for watching an excellent team on the field.

The team’s biggest stars, quarterback Clayton Thorson and running back Justin Jackson, will likely make millions playing in the NFL soon, but for now, they’re both still at NU and both poised to break plenty of single-season and career records.

The rest of the offense is a lot less certain, with the offensive line coming off an inconsistent-at-best season and the receiving unit turning to the likes of undersized Flynn Nagel or inexperienced Ben Skowronek to replace former Big Ten receiver of the year Austin Carr.

Nonetheless, Thorson and Jackson have enough talent on their own to get the Cats to the end zone.

On the other side of the ball, NU has remained

an above-average defense for years on end by being consistently strong on third downs and in the red zone. With the strength of this year’s defense located in the secondary, those patterns are likely to continue. Godwin Igwebuike is one of the Big Ten’s best safeties, and he has a lot of capable players around him, too. Given that the Cats have two proven linebackers in Brett Walsh and Nate Hall but an alarming lack of depth in the rest of the linebacking unit, Fitzgerald may use a nickel package (two linebackers and five defensive backs) frequently this season.

The schedule, too, is well-suited for a successful

season. An undefeated start against non-conference opponents Nevada, Duke and Bowling Green is extremely doable. NU will then play at Wisconsin and at home against Penn State, two of the conference’s best teams, in back-to-back weeks — and if the Cats can win one of those two, they’ll be on their way to a special campaign. Although plenty of tricky matchups remain in the final seven games, including a trip to Nebraska and visits from Minnesota and Iowa, NU should be evenly matched or better against all seven. benjaminpope2019@u.northwestern.edu
