MONITORING DONATIONS AS infections of Covid-19 continue to ravage the country, it is obvious that the health sector is being stretched to the limit as hospitals struggle to look after the surging number of patients.

Government has to ensure that it mobilises resources so that the health sector can look after the afflicted.

Government alone cannot cope to meet all the requirements of the health sector to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and has been supported by well-wishers who have chipped in.

Some have made monetary contributions while others have provided material support. And while welcoming this support, Government has promised transparency and accountability in the manner it handles the contributions.

But even with this assurance, there have been mischievous accusations, that the governing Patriotic Front merely wants to raise resources for next year’s presidential and general elections using Covid-19 as an excuse. Whapped thinking indeed considering the global impact of Covid-19, that it is real.

We are glad though that Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) might change this wrong perception and prove the mischief makers wrong.

This is because TIZ has launched a project to monitor the prudent management of Covid-19 donated resources to promote transparency.

The project is also aimed at promoting accountability and integrity in the management of Covid-19 donations.

TIZ executive director, Maurice Nyambe, said his organisation had been consistently advocating for Government to provide regular updates on the donations from various stakeholders towards the Covid-19 response.

This augurs well with the government’s approach of ensuring that all donations are accounted for.

According to Mr Nyambe, the project, whose implementation commenced last month was funded by USAID through the National Democratic Institute Zambia Political Participation and Leadership programme.

He said the ultimate goal was to ensure that the Covid-19 emergency response in Zambia was anchored on principles of transparency, accountability and integrity at all levels.

We see nothing wrong with this as it works in tandem with the government’s policy of zero tolerance towards corruption.

It is an open secret that the Covid-19 pandemic has seen some individuals and organisations throughout the world engage in crooked activities and take advantage through outright theft.

We are elated though that TIZ has so far been happy with the cooperation from the government.

For example, Mr Nyambe commended the Ministry of Health for the open-door policy they had exhibited so far as it was cardinal to the successful implementation of the project.

“Thus far, we have received good cooperation from the Ministry and our engagement with them concerning the project has been cordial and underpinned by a mutual desire to ensure that all donations made towards the Covid-19 response are managed prudently,” Mr Nyambe said.

Zambia has in the last 24 hours recorded 416 Covid-19 positive cases, three facility deaths and six discharges.

Minister of Health, Dr Chitalu Chilufya has warned that cases were projected to increase as the nation approaches mid-August.

And with Africa’s coronavirus cases passing the one-million mark, according to the African Union body dealing with the pandemic, there is clearly need to ensure that contributions made towards fighting the pandemic are looked after.

HAS THE UPND LOST ITS POLITICAL CLOUT?

AS general elections loom near, in August 2021, defections and ward by-election losses appear to be eating dangerously at the UPND’s vote in its erstwhile strongholds of Western and North-Western provinces.

The party is still expected to win in these two provinces but, according to political analysts, it would do so with its vote severely constrained and much tears of atychiphobia on its face, following its dismal performance in the latest round of ward by-elections.

The PF won the majority of the ward by-elections held on July 30, 2020, including some in areas considered to be UPND strongholds. Of the 15 byelections held on this occasion the PF won 10 and the UPND won five.

The results prompted celebration and boosted the PF’s confidence ahead of next year’s polls. However, it is worth noting that by-elections are not necessarily a good litmus indicator of a party’s likely performance or popularity in nationwide polls.

History also offers some lessons for caution on the PF’s part. Winning byelections by the governing party is not new in Zambia, it was observed during the MMD era in the years of 2009 and 2010.

That time everyone believed that MMD was popular and kept on winning almost in each and every by-election.

Remembering that history has the unfortunate knack of repeating itself is worthwhile for the PF. The just-ended ward by-elections would perhaps become a defining moment in the history of Zambia’s nascent 30-year-old democracy. And they came on the heels of the recent opposition triumph in Malawi’s recent landmark election re-run after last year’s fraudulent polls were overturned – which could have spurred similar democratic change across Zambia’s opposition movement.

It was also the first time in Africa that an election re-run led to the defeat of an incumbent.

In a portent of things to have emerged in Katete Ward in Chiengi, the opposition alliance partners UPND and NDC fielded a candidate each, thus splitting the opposition vote.

had called on all genuine opposition parties to unite and field only one candidate in next year’s presidential elections. From this, it seems there are cracks in the unity of UPND and its alliance partners.

elections looming in August 2021, and with their party life president as the face of the UPND’s campaign, it is widely predicted that the major opposition party will set a record in its loss of support in the erstwhile strongholds of Western and North-Western provinces.

And the blame will be squarely placed on the head of Mr Hakainde Hichilema.

But what has he done to deserve all this?

Before rising to the UPND presidency, it was openly declared that only a Tonga would succeed the party’s late founding leader Anderson Mazoka at the first and last national convention held in 2006.

To this day, UPND’s ostentatious façade of ethnic inclusion contrasts strongly with the innermost ethnic exclusion of non-Tonga senior members suitable for innermost positions of leadership.

Clearly though, UPND top leaders have fudged, ducked and dived, but no, the story about their Tonga-ethnocentric behaviour just won’t go away. With presidential and general elections scheduled for next year, the question everyone is asking is: Will a Zambian president ever come from the UPND’s top leadership?

As UPND presidential candidate, Mr Hichilema has been plagued by failed-attempt upon failed-attempt at Zambia’s presidency. His links with Brenthurst Foundation – an organisation established by the Oppenheimer family, founders of Anglo American domiciled in South Africa have come under scrutiny.

The Brenthurst Foundation officials are friends and business associates of Mr Hichilema, and are alleged to be bankrolling him for future government favours and concessions for mining rights and royalties in return, should the UPND, in the unlikely event, formed government.

But has the UPND lost its political clout? What threatens to be the tipping

point is the recently launched National Mobile Registration exercise.

The nation was waiting with bated breath for the release of a final programme by the Ministry of Home Affairs. I think by now you can see where all this politico-interest in National Registration Cards (NRCs) might lead to.

The next Zambian president would have to depend on first-time voters as the majority ones to elect him into office.

During the last general elections, the UPND engaged the disgraced UK data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica to influence first-time voters on social media ahead of the 2016 general elections. The UPND presidential candidate got 963, 029 votes against his closest rival’s paltry 118, 023 votes. The overwhelming voter turnout which was recorded in each of these provinces was mostly of underage first-time voters that came from poverty-stricken rural communities.

So, what should the PF do to prevent UPND from doing the 2016 Cambridge Analytica’s déjà vu all over again?

But, irrespective of all its socioeconomic challenges, it is predicted that the PF will still win over 50 percent of the votes in 2021, and return President Edgar Lungu to power.

But if a youthful populace weary of promises gets the feeling that this is the right time to extract benefits from a government desperately in need of their votes then there will be plenty of youth empowerment programmes coming before 2021.

And the country should brace itself for a seismic shift of the known and unknown in Zambian politics.w

Police demolish Mindolo North structures in dawn operation

By ROGERS KALERO FORTY structures constructed on land belonging to Mopani Copper Mines land in Kitwe’s Mindolo North area were demolished in an early morning operation yesterday by Zambia Police Service and MCM officers.

The demolition was carried out after several months of warning the public to stop buying pieces of land from unscrupulous people who were allegedly selling the land owned by the giant mining company Both Copperbelt Deputy Police Commissioner Bothwell Namuswa and MCM Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga confirmed the operation which was executed after the mining company obtained a court order.

THE Police will continue engaging all political parties into dialogue on the need to ensuring peaceful campaigns and elections as the country gears up for 2021 general elections, Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has said.

And Mr Kanganja has warned political party cadres that police would not tolerate perpetrators of lawlessness irrespective of their political affiliation.

Mr Kanganja has implored political parties to dialogue and work with key stakeholders which include the police.

He said to maintain peace, there was need for collective effort and tolerance from all stakeholders.

Mr Malanji however bemoaned the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on countries globally but noted that the disease could be conquered with continued solidarity and cooperation.

He commended the British government for supporting various funds and initiatives aimed at assisting vulnerable countries’ response to the economic impact of the pandemic. And Mr. Duddridge noted the

impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on economies and people’s lives globally and the efforts that were being made by countries to fight the disease. Mr. Duddridge pledged the United Kingdom’s readiness to support Zambia and share information on lessons and experiences in the fight against the pandemic.

He stated that the United Kingdom was assisting Zambia with £110 million in aid funding, a testament of the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Mr. Duddridge emphasised the need for the two countries to work together to ensure mutual support on common positions and candidatures in international organisations.

MINISTER of Tourism and Arts Ronald Chitotela has warned poachers in Kawambwa’s Pambashe area that the Department of National Parks and Wildlife will not be lenient to wildlife offenders as restocking is underway.

Speaking during a stakeholder’s meeting with Sub-chief Kabanda and headmen during his ongoing tour of Kawambwa, Mr. Chitotela said villagers should not abuse the fact that he comes from that area because he has instructed the department to be firm in the quest to revive tourism in the Northern Circuit.

He called for mindset change from looking at “wildlife as relish” to wildlife as a tourism product and a forex earner that contributed to the many countries Gross Domestic Product and change the profile of Kawambwa and the entire Luapula Province.

“I would like to direct the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to start conducting clean up exercises for illegal firearms among villagers,” Mr. Chitotela said.

He said tourists would like to see a complete package apart from the Lumangwe and Kabwelume Waterfalls in the area.

And Sub-chief Kabanda said there was need to support the minister in the quest to revive tourism in the Northern Circuit tourism development.

He called on the headmen keep away from the activities that were detrimental to development initiatives such as tourism.

THE church should pray for political leaders because they were chosen by God, Seventh Day Adventist Grasmere congregation district pastor Motson Mweemba has said.

Pastor Mweemba said it is the duty of churches to pray for the country and its leaders because it is God who chooses leaders.

He was speaking when Chilanga member of Parliament Maria Kanga donated 40 bags of cement to the church, Pastor Mweemba said praying for leaders will help them govern in a Godly manner, adding that churches should also respect political leaders.

Ms Langa also disclosed that President Edgar Lungu has donated bags of cement to Chilanga constituency.

She said that so far her office has donated to six SDA churches in the constituency and in Mwembeshi.

Ms Langa explained that the 1, 000 bags of cement will be donated to various churches in the constituency.

Ms Chalikosa said the ministry in consultation with other ministries was working on an asset policy.

She said this entails creating a data base of all Government infrastructure to help the ministry determine the value of all State assets.

Ms Chalikosa said the ministry was working toward ensuring that all Government infrastructure, including VIP houses were in habitable status.

“The Ministry of Works and Supply is putting together the asset policy in consultation with other ministries for all public infrastructure owned by Government to be able to determine the value of Government assets,” Ms Chalikosa said.

She said determining the value of Government assets would help when the State needed to borrow.

Dear Editor, WHY Kabwe town must be evacuated, why Breakfast mealie meal must be banned and why the asbestos roofs and water pipes must be removed.

KABWE AND LEAD POISONING Kabwe is the most polluted town in the world and the lead toxins in ground water and the environment make it one of the most dangerous towns in the world.

“Having been to probably 20 toxic hotspots throughout the world, and seeing mercury, chromium and many contaminated lead sites, I can say the scale in Kabwe town is the worst I have seen and unprecedented,” says Professor Jack Caravanos, an environmental health expert at New York University, on his fourth visit to the town.

“There are thousands of people affected here, not hundreds as in other places."

After almost a century of lead mining and smelting, the toxins have probably poisoned generations.

Governments have moved to ban the substance and have sponsored the removal of water pipes and roofs made from the substance.

Yet we still have it in water pipes and still covers many roofs.

LUBINDA GIVEN JUSTICE Dear Editor,

MINISTER of Justice and Kabwata member of Parliament Given Lubinda has finally been given justice. This follows the arresting and subsequent jailing of Martin Mambwe, a Kalingalinga driver who is alleged to have assaulted him some time last year.

What transpired is that Mr Lubinda was touring his constituency to check on some developmental projects. When he reached Kabwata market, he was greeted by a horde of people.

At some point, Mambwe slapped and punched Mr Lubinda much to the amazement of the onlookers.

This was an embarrassment to Mr Lubinda.

Mr. Lubinda’s assailant was later apprehended and taken to Kabwata Police Station for the committed offence. It is very unfortunate that the lawmaker was attacked in the presence of his aide. What happened to the Kabwata lawmaker is a clear testimony that the leaders are not safe.

President Edgar Lungu has from time to time denounced political violence whether perpetrated

Mr Lubinda by the political cadres.

Furthermore, The Head of State stated that there shouldn’t be any sacred cows where political violence is concerned. The political perpetrators of political violence should be dealt with accordingly.

Mambwe was recently slapped with a two year jail sentence by a Magistrate’s Court. In delivering the verdict, Chief Resident Magistrate, Lameck Mwale said that he would not condone any politically motivated violence.

However, the sentencing of Mambwe to a two-year jail

term is timely as it sends a clear message to the wouldbe offenders that crime does not pay.

Worse still, it has become a trend for some unruly political cadres to attack their perceived political opponents with impunity.

This should not be condoned considering the fact that Zambia goes to the polls next year.

All said and done, it is good that Mr Lubinda has finally been given justice following the sentencing of his assailant.

To the contrary, the general membership has constantly cheered any sentiments uttered by him so long they appear to drive a particular narrative.

Mr Ejimadu who claims to have unknown imaginary powers, comes at a time he made a mysterious and highly suspicious disappearance from public eye when coronavirus was at its peak in his newly found country of refuge.His naked ambitions to see UPND reigning in the corridors of power was evident when he castigated the ostensibly visible inefficiency of UPND MPs who he described as noise makers in Parliament preoccupied with shouting “yayaya” and getting hefty allowances when no service has been delivered at the expense of their electorates who require them to engage the ECL-led Administration.

The assertions by Mr Ejimadu comes barely hours after we condemned a member of Parliament in Southern Province for mockingly donating K75 worth of salt when the residents were in dire need of development.

We therefore wish to counsel the UPND MPs to re-define their allegiance to the Zambian people as opposed to unelected as well as unelectable politicians such as the multiple losing Presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema.

We urge the UPND MPs will go back to he drawing board, work with the Government for the sake of their electorates.

OREST Rangers quest to scoop their first ever MTN/ FAZ Super Division title comes under scrutiny when the Tennant Chilumba-drilled side face ZANACO FC in the title decider which should have been played on July 18 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

With the FAZ appeals committee having rescinded the decision by the disciplinary committee who had handed ZANACO maximum three points for the game which was not played because Rangers had reported 29 positive cases of Covid-19 in the team will todays fixture as a big boost to wining the league.

Having secured qualification for the CAF Champions League following the 1-0 beating of NAPSA Stars on Thursday, Rangers face ZANACO with the aim to make history by scooping their first league title.

France's Michael Lorenzo-Vera bogeyed the last to also sit tied for second.

After carding a 67, England's Paul Casey is a shot further back with Brendon Todd, the joint overnight leader with Day, and Cameron Champ, who matched Fleetwood's low mark of 64.

THE Football Association of Zambia urged football administrators to behave as individuals who know and understand the rules of the game.

Speaking in an interview, FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala said the association will not hesitate to “bite” and punish administrators putting the name of the game into disrepute.

Kashala said it is unfair for administrtotrs to call the association names because of decisions made by its judicial bodies.

He said FAZ judicial bodies work independently and are being managed by very high profiled people.

Kashala said it was im-

portant that football administrators respect the statutes and rules which govern the management of the game.

“We must be honest with ourselves and let’s not be personal in the way we handle football matters and I want to urge football administrators to behave as administrators and not supporters.

“There must be a difference between a supporter and an administrator who has knowledge about the game and understand the rules,” said Kashala.

He said FAZ has picked a lot of lessons from the Covid-19 disturbed Super Division which is set to end prematurely today with Forest Rangers hosting Zanaco in the final match of the sea-

son.

Meanwhile, Kashala said FAZ will introduce punitive measures for clubs which are not going to follow the guidelines for the new season set to kick off in October.

DANCING ROBOTS REPLACE FANS AT JAPANESE BASEBALL GAME T

OKYO - With their stadium devoid of fans due to coronavirus restrictions, Japanese baseball team Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks have come up with an imaginative replacement: dancing robots.

Before their most recent

Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) game against Rakuten Eagles on Tuesday, over 20 robots danced to the team’s fight song on a podium in the otherwise empty stand. Two different robots, including SoftBank’s humaniod robot ‘Pepper’ and others on four legs like a dog,

stamped and shimmied in a choreographed dance that is usually performed by the Hawks’ fans before games in the 40,000 capacity Fukuoka Dome. Some of the robots wore Hawks caps and waved flags supporting the team.

Fans on social media had mixed reactions.

“I think this is like a dystopia,” wrote one Twitter user.

Another called the performance “insanely beautiful.”

Boosted by the supportive robots, the Hawks won 4-3 as they look to defend their 2019 NPB title.

Medical miracle as baby born with umbilical cord wrapped six times around neck sur A BABY stunned doctors when it was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck six timesbut was given a clean bill of health.

The medical marvel saw the infant born naturally but with the cord wrapped tightly around it’s neck like a snake.

It’s not unusual for the umbilical cord to be wrapped round a newborn tot, but six times - without consequences - is unheard of.

One doctor said they had never seen anything like it in 23 years.

Neither the mum nor her newborn suffered any medical consequences after medics managed to cut the umbilical cord free.

The wonder took place at the Yichang Central Hospital in the city of Yichang, in western China’s Hubei province,

and was only revealed to the world after it was confirmed that the miracle tot was given a full clean bill of health.

Li Haur, director of obstetrics, told reporters: “I have been working for 23 years, and this is the first time I have seen an umbilical cord wrapped around a baby’s neck like this.”

The doctor remarked how the umbilical cord round the baby’s neck resembled a piece of ethnic neck jewellery.

She said the baby suffered no serious consequences after it was removed from their neck.

She said: “To find the umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck is not uncommon and if it’s long enough, will usually not cause problems.”

CARE4US Foundation Africa, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting the girl child and providing education has continued to offer support to various communities to help stop Covid-19 spread.

Recently, the organization reached out to communities by donating face masks, Hoodies for the kids and leather jackets for the Parents of Mashila Community School and Matipula Basic School in Chongwe. " The Hoodies and leather jackets will keep the kids and their parents warm so that Covid-19 is well fought," explained Elijah Mupenda Kasitoka the country coordinator.

He told the people of Mashila Community School during the donation to take precautions put in place to prevent the spread of the disease.

KEVIN HART: Ellen Degeneres is one of the dopest people on the planet KEVIN Hart has hailed Ellen Degeneres as "one of the dopest people on the planet" following the allegations against her talk show.

Producers of “The Ellen Degeneres Show” have been accused of creating a "toxic work environment" by several former employees, as well as sexual misconduct claims being placed against two of the show's top executives.

Whilst Ellen, 62, was not accused of any wrongdoing in the allegations, she sent a letter of apology to her staff last week, which caused backlash after Brad Garrett - who appeared on the chat show six times between 2004 and 2007 - accused her of treating some people on the pro-

MY mother was a Congolese and my father is from Chama District, I am a Zambian not a Congolese, Lusaka clergy Prophet Bishop John Nundwe has insisted.

Controversy has continued surrounding the Miracle Impact Ministries Overseer over his citizenship.

Daily Nation Lifestyle caught up with the Bishop who explained that contrary to the allegations that he is Congolese, it is his mother who was Congolese while his father is a Zambian from Eastern Province in Chama District.

He says he is a pure Zambian and that his heart belongs here.

He noted that some sections of society continue accusing him of not being a Citizen of Zambia when the court recently declared him a Zambian citizen.

The Bishop explained that after being deported to Congo, he was also deported from that country again stating that he was Zambian.

He narrated that unlike other men of God who are in the habiting of attacking leaders, he has never said anything against government.

Meanwhile the Bishop has disclosed that his plight is to see to it that, the welfare of everyone is uplifted.

The man of God is famous for his charity work in Lusaka and other areas.

He is a mentor of many men of God and Government officials and a friend to the less privileged, widows and orphans.

He brands himself as a role model to his generation and that his story is an encour-

agement that there is hope for the weak. He has been donating to various orphanages, public and private institutions in Zambia.

He says he was called into ministry at the age of eight.

His Miracle Impact Ministries International started operations in 2008 at the mountain of independence in Matero, Lusaka Zambia.

It has been in existence for thirteen years with a membership of over 10,000 members and still growing. It has several branches within and outside Zambia.

Prophet Bishop John Nundwe is famous for miracles, prophecies, deliverance, healing and signs and wonders.

He believes he is a sure sign that God’s calling is just election by grace.

ENNON Shinde aka DJ Len the Trapster has been a famous feature on Radio Phoenix for 14 solid years. Until last week when he decided to quit radio to embark on a journey in the tourism sector, Len has been a major force in promoting local entertainment and Zambian music. He says it is hard to quit something he has done straight from school and for this reason he thanks all the individuals that made his 14-year radio career possible.

"I would like to first of all thank the late Errol Hickey (M.H.S.R.I.P) who picked me when I was very young straight from high school and gave me my first radio job," Len says.

"To Ms Elizabeth Pemba I cannot thank her enough as she is the one who did the panel beating on me to turn me into the radio presenter I became. My big brother in radio Big Al for the guidance and thanks Danny Peddle Mwiikisa and Pamela Munyanta who recorgnized my talent after that audition many years ago. To Owen Rhampa, thank you for putting that cherry on top."

Len describes his 14 years on radio as having been nothing but amazing.

"It's been a journey that has definetly shaped my life

to where I am today. Working in media has exposed me so much. It exposed me to people from all works of life and it also exposed me to different places. All in all, I wouldn't trade the experience have had working for Phoenix Fm for anything.

Thank you to the Phoenix FM family for the love and support," said Len. He thanks his fans for supporting him all these years. " I couldn't have done it without you. I love you all," he said explaining that he has decided to quit radio in order to enhance his concentration on tourism. " I want to focus on my Safari Camp (Bocco Island Lower Zambezi river Safari Camp) which we are building and running with my wife and hope to promote local tourism," he explained.

Bocco Island is a Safari Camp situated in Lower Zambezi along the Zambezi river in Chiawa area about three-hour drive from Lusaka. " It all started when my wife Sandra and I were out travelling on one of the holidays looking for a place to build our holiday/retirement home. When we found the place in Lower Zambezi, I started clearing the place.

Whilest doing that, I set up some tents for me and the team that was helping me.

The moment we set up tents, foreign tourists that saw the tents on our land started coming asking if they could camp there," narrated Len to explain how he set up the business. "And that's how it

all started. The place is like paradise as we are in a wildlife sanctuary with different animals on the camp everyday. The name 'Bocco' is the local name for hippos which are ever on the island."

Len says radio has always been his love and that he would not be surprised to get back. In his other life as an actor, Len promises his fans to expect a lot from me.

s we continue to live through the COVID-19 global pandemic, one of the questions on everyone’s minds is “How do we stop this from ever happening again?”. As with all problem-solving exercises, one must identify the cause before one arrives at the solution.

It is now common knowledge that the first reports of COVID-19 originated from a wet market in Wuhan, China. This is the equivalent of a bushmeat market where various species of wildlife are traded.

The Wuhan wildlife market has since been closed and China has banned the trade in wildlife, but the damage has been done. To date there have been nearly 20 million cases of the disease worldwide and an estimated 700,000 deaths. Whilst the full extent of the health impacts of COVID-19 remains uncertain, the impact on livelihoods and economies is certain to be damaging.

The standard ‘lock down’ response countries have taken to halt the spread of the virus has brought about an unprecedented freeze in economic activity. Never before have the world’s workers and consumers, been required to stay home and refrain from most of their everyday activities. The economic impact of COVID-19 in Zambia, a landlocked and resourcedependent nation was felt long before the first case was reported. A recent report by the Zambian Chamber of Mines goes as far as to forecast the most severe recession since the end of World War II. These are indeed worrying times.

Looking back at the wet market in Wuhan, it is clear that human activity is to blame, particularly human involvement in the illegal wildlife trade. Many species of wildlife are known vectors of disease carrying agents.

Viruses like COVID-19 naturally mutate and recombine, sharing different components to create new viruses.

So, wildlife trading and meat markets, where multiple live species are kept together and butchered on the same surfaces, provide a perfect breeding ground for novel pathogens. In October 2019, Chinese researchers published a study documenting a variety of coronaviruses in pangolins. Another

study showed the genome sequence of the novel coronavirus strain separated from pangolins was 99% identical to that from infected people, indicating pangolins may be an intermediate host of the virus. Until recently these endangered, scaly, ant-eating mammals were regularly illegally imported to Chinese markets. Pangolins are trafficked primarily for their scales which are falsely believed to have medicinal qualities. Their scales are made from keratin which is the same protein that forms human hair and fingernails.

Thankfully the demand for

international donor funding financed 73% of Zambia’s national budget towards environmental protection. Even more concerning is the fact budgetary allocation towards environmental protection remained at an average of 0.6% of the total national budget.

Financing biodiversity conservation needs to become a priority for every Zambian, and this must be reflected by the financial resources put towards conservation.

Historically wildlife conservation has not been well funded in Zambia. In the future, it should be recognised that investing in conserving our wild spaces and wildlife is investing in and protecting ourselves.

NATION LIFESTYLE:Briefly tell us about yourself.

NATASHA: I am Natasha Var der Maas, Luanshya born and Lusaka raised. I grew up around four brothers. I was basically a Tomboy for a long time until I went to high school. My primary at Rhodes Park in Lusaka then secondary School at Njase Girls in Choma. I enjoyed Choma, learnt a bit of Tonga.

Growing up for me was quite interestI ing. grew up a on farm so I was a farm girl for a long time.

I loved to climb trees and it was just amazing growing up with my brothers. I learnt so many skills from

them.

I learnt how to be and tough fend how to dea n d myself, I learnt confipicked up a lot of my dent traits from my brothers and my parents have always been supportive kind. for ZCAS to went I my colleague, I studied ABE(Association of Business Executives), so I studied business management.

NATASHA: some people might say it was an accident but I think God structured it the way that I found myself in it. I haven’t been in it for a long time, I think it’s been just about three years.

Initially, I was doing s favour for a friend where I was supposed to be a presenter for an upcoming show called ‘ Denya’. It was a dance competition show and the producer for ‘Zathu’ found me there when I was presenting for the dance competition. Really after there, everything just kind of fell in place. I am here with ‘Tuvwange’, ‘ Zathu’ and I am now a brand influencer, and an ambassador for a couple of things. It just fell into place at the right time when it needed to happen. I think God ordained it this way.

There were parts of me when I was younger where I thought I would be a journalist and do ABCD but decided to study Business Management which kind of fuses in to every aspect of life and managing oneself and now that I have become a personal brand, it has helped me with being in the entertainment industry, and understanding the pros and cons about building a brand and understanding that, as an individual and as a brand, and being in the entertainment industry, you are also a business.

NATION LIFESTYLE: What makes you different from the rest in terms of what you do?

NATASHA: I am very particular and very intentional with what I do. I am still understanding the type of brand I want to be. I think for me what sets me apart is authenticity. I want to be as real as I can be. I try to be as authentic as I can be. The entertainment industry is still growing in Zambia and it is important to find your neashe and cement that spot that you feel you fit in, and for me I think authenticity is what has brought me this far. It is good to be authentic with personal relationships, with business relationships and especially being on TV, you cannot afford to be fake and try and portray to be who you are not. So I think authenticity is very important and it is something I am learning and mastering so that I am relatable to the views on and off camera.

NATION LIFESTYLE:How do you strike a balance between family and work?

NATASHA: I have an amazing family and to be honest it is hard. I have never sugar-coated this. It is really hard to juggle the two. And to be honest one suffers more than the other.

Sometimes work suffers, sometimes the family suffers by but it is important to have a support system that understands what you are doing.

At work it is important to have a good relationship with your team.

NATION LIFESTYLE:You have a lovely family, briefly let us in your family life.

NATASHA: I have a blended family, we have a set of two parents. There is my husband and I, there is also my husband’s ex-wife and her husband. We share two kids between the families, my husband has two children from his former relationship and I have one biological one with him. I never want to split the two and make it seem there is two different families. I love my family very much and it works so well. Having a blended family, some people might think learning the ropes and stricking a balance is hard. For me I think God had just had it directed from the beginning. He orchestrated everything for me. My journey in a blended family has been amazing really.

It has been interesting.

It has been thought provoking and a lot of life learnt lessons. I am a young mother, so there is a lot of pressure that comes with that. I have 16 year old, a 13 year old and a three year old.

I must say these are the biggest blessings I have had in my life. I have an amazing blended family.

NATION LIFESTYLE: What have been your low moments in the game?

NATASHA: The entertainment industry is very interesting for lack of a better term. There are times you want a certain job and it is given to someone else and sometimes you question yourself to say why wasn’t I given that job, was I not good enough? Pulling out from that is learning that life is a process and the entertainment industry especially in Zambia is growing now and the options are so many. Talent and creativity is broad.

I wouldn’t say that I have an ultimate low point so far but I think there is just times that another talent is picked and not you.

NATION LIFESTYLE: How do you handle the pressure that comes with fame?

NATION LIFESTYLE:Let’s talk about Tuvwange. How does it feel to be part of that show?

NATASHA: Lots of pressure comes with being in the public eye and I think for me, I just decided to choose a positive path with everything I do. Like I said, I am very deliberate and intentional with what I do and if something does not align with the brand that I am or the brand I want to build then, I won’t engage into it.

The backlash and some interactions are really personal and very thought provoking, and sometimes it will get you down and make you think twice about your work and what you are putting out there. But I think what helps is the bigger picture, the bigger dream I have of being in the industry and making it last for a long time. The entertainment industry has a shelf life and we can’t ignore that. I am doing my level best to stay relevant. Doing it the Natasha way, just blocking out the negative energy and moving on. Sometimes it is just better to watch and learn, and move on and keep being

NATASHA: ‘ Tuvwange’ is a whole ball of energy. It is something new to the game and the very first talk show we have coming out of Zambia. It is amazing to share a platform with four amazing women, Mutale, Esther and Micthie are fantastic. They all bring a different flavour to the show.

I am coming from a show that I was doing so low to a show where I am sharing a platform.

Now that I am on the show, it opens up your mind to a whole lot of things. You hear different opinions, different experiences and it actually now brings you to a bigger and better interaction with the public out there. The interaction is amazing. ‘ Tuvwange’ is a ground breaker when it comes to the entertainment industry as a talk show. It is just something out of this world and I am enjoying myself. Zambezi Magic has given us a platform to share our stories and I think that is what ‘ Tuvwange’ is bringing out.
