SECURE ZAMBIA FIRST AGRICULTURE Minister Michael Katambo is on firm ground by insisting that Government will only allow maize exports when the country is food secure.

According to the minister, government targets to buy one million metric tonnes of maize to ensure Zambians have enough food before allowing exports to neighbouring countries.

While this may sound harsh to farmers and other businesses that intend to export the staple food, Mr Katambo has a point and should be supported by all patriotic Zambians.

The decision should not be misconstrued to mean government has banned farmers from exporting maize but is a temporal measure to allow the country buy adequate reserves what with the unpredictable rainfall pattern.

It would, therefore, be folly for Government to allow most of the maize to be exported only to come and source for maize from other countries in the event of a drought or worse still floods because of the effects of climate change.

In fact, the country is still recovering from effects of floods which last season not only destroyed crops but displaced millions of people in some provinces where people were forced to rely on Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) handouts.

The nation should learn a lesson from what happened and to avoid a repeat by securing enough maize in its strategic reserves to enable the nation weather the storms.

It’s only proper that government’s decision is supported.

We urge farmers and other citizens involved in exporting maize not to consider government’s stance as a ban but a wise strategic measure aimed at protecting Zambians from hunger especially that nobody can predict what the future holds.

Yes, while farmers have to reap from their sweat, the situation demands that they carefully weigh the options as patriotic citizens – export most of the maize and remain food insecure or stock up adequately and avoid hunger before thinking of export markets.

Government, as Mr Katambo indicated, will after meeting its maize target, still allow 210,000 metric tonnes to be exported which was in line with the crop focus.

This only goes to show that there is no ban.

But it will be impossible for government to meet its target of making the country food secure if farmers continue shunning selling their maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) because of the lower price.

As things stand, some farmers had even resorted to selling their maize to briefcase buyers and other private sector players.

Even worse some have resorted to smuggling to neighbouring countries such as Malawi and Congo DRC where they were being offered a lucrative price.

While Government can’t force farmers to sell their crops to FRA in a liberalised market such as ours, there is need for the State to come up with incentives that would compel farmers to sell most of their crops to FRA to make Zambia food secure.

Right now there are many buyers on the maize market offering slightly higher prices than what Government was offering, this must be looked into as it is making it impossible for FRA to buy as much maize as possible.

It’s definitely a dicey situation but we implore Government to urgently find a solution to this problem before most of the maize lands in the hands of the private sector players, worse still foreigners.

Unless something is done, it will be difficult to curb maize smuggling which in some cases has seen those involved shot at by local security wings. This is not as it should be.

All in all, Government’s decision not to allow maize exports until the nation is food secure is deserves commendation.

‘Don’t politicise Zambia’s corruption fight’

A

S the battle against corruption gradually gathers steam with the 2021 elections around the corner, it appears there is a deliberate attempt in some political and civil society quarters to politicise it for evidently regime change purposes. Like many other objective Zambians, I strongly agree with President Edgar Lungu for pointing out that the anti-corruption focus on his appointees was deliberately selective, meant to create and achieve a narrative that he himself was surrounded by and runs a corrupt administration, which the Zambian people must resent in next year’s polls.

And the picture revealed by the Head of State is not pretty. One such spotlighted issue which presents a difficult challenge from a number of anti-graft perspectives is the issue of regime change, and how governmental turnover impacts the long-term assessment and vetting of mandarins, specifically, those serving in governmental intermediaries like the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The issue of governmental turnover can be evolutionary or revolutionary, with a continuum of variations; however, regardless of how a regime might “change hands,” the potential impact on a civil servant in terms of corruption, is quite similar. Furthermore, when you analyse the impact of regime change as a potential hazard in civil servants assessment and long term monitoring, the challenges become even more complicated. But why would regime change present a risk factor?

Arguably, corruption and social exclusion may lead to popular disenchantment with

traditional institutions. Citizens may feel the system is rigged and do not think the state is able to address their main socio-economic concerns. In turn, pseudo-populist opposition actors can appeal to citizens because they may promise to break the vicious cycle of the corrupt elite enriching themselves.

By claiming to derive authority directly from the ordinary people, they may attempt to subvert democratic institutions that limit their power. Pseudo-populists often taint their political competitors as part of immoral corrupt elite, however, once in power they often turn out to be more corrupt than the ones that they had displaced.

Professional impartiality is the goal towards which politically-harassed FIC, DEC and ACC officials must be striving.

Besides, the anarchy inherent in pseudo-populists is moving towards a climax as 2021 polls approach.

Broadly, though, regime change can be a turnover in government, from an orderly transition through a democratically elected leader and party, to violent revolution, and all the permutations in between.

However, when discussing regime change in the context of foreign bribery, I seldom think of November 17, 2014, when the UK-based Africa Confidential published an article titled “Foreign boost for opposition.

Dignitaries and South African businessmen are trying to unite the opposition against the Patriotic Front”.

The article highlighted a conspiracy hatched by Brenthurst Foundation – an organisation established by the Oppenheimer family, founders of Anglo American. According to Africa Confidential, a group of South African mining investors and arms dealers was behind

the effort to fix the 2015 presidential by-election and install Hakainde Hichilema as Zambia’s president with the goal of easing access to mining rights and reducing of mining royalties for foreign companies once voted into office.

The UPND leader and Zambia’s ex-president Rupiah Banda were flown to Oppenheimer family’s luxurious Tswalu game reserve in the Northern Cape, South Africa. In a series of meetings run by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo (who also chaired Brenthurst Foundation), South African businessmen sought to bring together a secret alliance of UPND and MMD leaders. Although former Zambian president refused to take part in the conspiracy, Oppenheimer family and their partners pledged to support Hichilema in his bid for presidency.

Following Hichilema’s meetings in South Africa, high budget adverts began running on Muvi TV, while UPND countrywide campaign sojourns began using several new helicopters – piloted by white South Africans. In the context of foreign bribery, the allegations were extremely serious. However, despite media headlines and a transparency campaign led

by Zambian voices, the UPND leader refused to explain his personal and financial ties with the wealthy South African businessmen. His longstanding effort to keep the Brenthurst conspiracy under wraps was, and still is, hypocritical for him to do so – given the financial support his party allegedly continues to derive from foreign tycoons holding similar grievances against the incumbent and the ruling PF. So, what does this mean for foreign bribery?

Perhaps FIC, DEC and ACC officials must develop some interest in investigating the

Brenthurst conspiracy. Could this be a considered case of Zambia’s fourth ex-president attesting to the fact that the UPND leader truly got foreign bribes from those 2014 interactions with wealthy South African businessmen perhaps? It is, therefore, not surprising that political morality may become such a hot 2021 election issue if specifically, UPND got and continued to get bribes from wealthy foreign businessmen.

The ruling party PF smells blood because the UPND seems vulnerable when it comes to nefarious and venal matters linked to the Brenthurst Foundation. So far, all the UPND has been able to do in response to allegations of foreign bribery is to mumble incoherently or remain mute since Hichilema’s position has rendered the party tainted with foreign bribes. A party, growing to democratic maturity, must abandon this fetish. If not, the ground must be fertile for another UPND election defeat.

No wonder the UPND-led opposition alliance and its surrogate civil society are keen to suppress the Brenthurst conspiracy to spin a narrative by politicising Zambia’s corruption fight. It is unfortunate that they are hell-bent in ruining the name of the Head of State just to win power and create a campaign message of alleged governmental corruption – albeit without a shred of evidence.

This kind of politics is detrimental to multiparty democracy.

One thing is for sure – UPND leaders with grubby hands together with their surrogate civil society must not politicise Zambia’s corruption fight – 2021 elections will not be won or lost on who may be first or last in smearing names of political rivals with filth.

ECZ final online registration to commences

“It should be noted that this is still a testing phase of the online pre-registration system meant for eligible voters to become familiar with the platform and give feedback to the Commission for the improvement of the system before the launch on 21st September, 2020. The pre-registration will end on November 1, 2020,” the statement read in part.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia Public Relations Manager, emphasized that the Online Pre-Registration Platform is also aimed at enhancing and quickening the registration process.

She explained that for those that are unable to pre-register online during the online pre- registration period can still go to a physical Registration Centre to get fully registered.

Ms Chimanse further provided clarity that all those who will pre-register online will be expected to present themselves at a physical Registration Centre in order to complete the registration process. - ZANIS

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will embark on the second and final phase of the Beta Testing of the Online Pre-registration Platform from Tuesday 31st August, to Monday 7th September 2020.

ECZ Public Relations Manager, Margaret Chimanse said members of the general public are free to participate in the second phase of the Beta Testing programme for online pre-registration.

Ms Chimanse stated that the Commission has incorporated feedback from the first pre-testing phase that was conducted between 18th July and 25th July, 2020.

12 ARRESTED IN COVID-19 SCAM

TWELVE people have been detained for duping members of the public with fake Covid relief packages and taking money from unsuspecting victims.

Police in Lusaka have arrested twelve suspects who have been registering people and promising them money for emergency cash transfer for impersonating a public officer.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said that the 12 have been arrested for obtaining money by false pretenses.

She said that the suspects are alleged to have been representing themselves as officials from Community Development and Social services and in some instances found collecting money from members of the public purporting that they were registering people as beneficiaries of the COVID

19 emergency support.

"Two suspects were arrested on 28th August, 2020 from Katambalala Market area in Zingalume Compound where they were found taking down particulars of people indicating their NRC numbers and charging between K2 and K10 per person. About 150 people had registered and K 185 was recovered from them. She said that the suspects aged 25 and 23 are in Police custody.

"In a similar incidence, Police in Lusaka today (yesterday) arrested 10 people for personating a public officer. This is alleged to have occurred today, 29th August, 2020 in Matero Township.

"After receiving a report from Community Development and Social Services officials, police officers followed up the report apprehended ten (10) suspects aged between 26 years and 30 years . Investigations have continued," he said.

Meanwhile Minister of Health, Chitalu Chilufya has revealed that the Covid-19 relief package that is going round on social media is a scam. Some of the social media scams are offering between K200 and K30,000 by asking people to click on links which then redirect the reader to other sites which for betting or where someone is then asked to send money in order to access what is promised.

Banda is new IAZ president

The AGM also elected Webster Chigwende as Association vice president, while past President of the Association, Paul Nkhoma, who is CEO of Hollard Insurance was co-opted onto the Board as per IAZ constitution.

He added that the foundation of the Patriotic Front (PF) was rooted in the hearts of the people including those in Muchinga Province, adding that the PF’s vision which late President Sata left should remain and continue to be maintained among the people.

He said President Sata might be gone but his legacy, spirit, good work and patriotism would remain in Muchinga and the country at large.

The Head of State further called on those attending the conference to remain united and patriotic saying the act will help the party to grow and not lose its unity of purpose.

President Lungu further wished all those contesting various positions to make sure that they work well with the party once voted bearing in mind that 2021 was around the corner.

HH SEXIST SARCASM CONDEMNED

highest office, was common practice and therefore Zambians were within their right to ask Mr Hichilema to explain how he managed to amass his riches at the time he was just 29 years old.

“There is nothing unusual about asking HH to state the source of his wealth unless he knows that disclosing how he made his wealth will cost him political office, in any case it’s equally wrong for him to hide information that people need to use for making a reasonable conclusion as to what kind of a man he is,” he said He also wondered what morals Mr. Hichilema was communicating to the younger generation by claiming on his Facebook that the FDD leader

had a crush on him after she challenged him to explain his involvement in the privatisation process.

“The question of amassing wealth whose source you cannot explain is a serious offence for which can be prosecuted in almost all countries therefore Zambians do not expect him to trivialise the matter,” he said.

Mr Kalimbwe advised that as a person who was aspiring to become Republican President, Mr Hichilema’s level of morality should be above reproach and avoid using sexist outbursts to shut up his critics.

COVID-19 delays Kafue Gorge commissioning

THE effects of Covid 19 pandemic has delayed the commissioning of the Kafue Gorge Lower (KGL) Power Station, Zesco public relations manager Hazel Zulu has said.

Speaking in a telephone interview, Ms. Zulu said that the project has delayed due to delays in delivering materials.

She said that the 750MW hydroelectric power station

project on the Kafue River in the southern part of Chikankata has reached 86 per cent completion.

Ms. Zulu disclosed that the first 150 megawatts will be commissioned in October this year and thereafter the project would be commissioned in phases.

MURDER: 14 teens arrested over Kanyama boy’s murder

POLICE in Lusaka have arrested 14 people in connection with the murder of a 15-year-old boy of Lusaka’s Kanyama compund.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo who confirmed the arrest, said investigations had been launched in connection with the murder of Ezron Mutafya.

Mutafya was killed in Kanyama on August 11, 2020 after he was attacked and robbed of his cellphone by a group of thugs who were in a Toyota Hiace minibus.

Ms Katongo said after instituting investigations in case, police on 28th August 2020, arrested 14 suspects, all male juveniles aged between 13 and 18 years.

She said the Toyota Hiace mini bus suspected to have been used by the suspected thugs had also been impounded.

Ms Katongo said investigations were continuing and that the suspects were in custody.

Support Bill 10, urges Chief Chiyengele

CHIEF Chiyengele of the Mbunda people of Limulunga in Western Province has implored parliamentarians who are against Bill 10 to support it so it can be adequately debated in Parliament.

The traditional leader said it was disappointing that some Members of Parliament wanted to divert people’s attention from the bill when in fact they were among those who agreed to its terms it at inception.

He said it was better for the Bill to be debated so that the law makers could render their opinions from an informed point of view.

"After all, laws are made in Parliament and this calls for all citizens who mean well for Zambia to support Bill 10 and allow it to be debated in Parliament.

“It is disappointing that some MPs are now misleading the nation when in fact they were among the stakeholders who agreed to its terms," Chief Chiyengele said.

He called on traditional leaders across the country to ensure all MPs in their respective chief-

doms were in support of the bill so that it could be debated in the interest of their electorates.

Chief Chiyengele commended parliamentarians who had gone flat out to sensitise people on the advantages of the bill, saying such progressive steps should be emulated by law makers who were lagging behind.

He said President Edgar Lungu had proved to be a leader for all and urged citizens to support him if Zambia was to develop.

"Development is widely spread and this is what we expected as a nation and l would want to urge President Lungu and his leadership not to listen to people with selfish motives who want to divert people from real issues.

“Let them take part in national matters of interest and stop misleading people," he said.

Chief Chiyengele said challenges the country was facing should not be used as a platform to condemn the current leadership.

"We need solutions not pointing fingers as this is retrogressive to development," he stated.

Emergency social cash transfer explained

EMERGENCY social cash transfer is not a political gimmick to bribe potential voters but to help the vulnerable in society who have been adversely affected by the covid19 pandemic, Lusaka district commissioner David Silubanji has said.

Mr. Silubanji said in an interview that it was true that government was giving out emergence cash transfers but that not everyone

was eligible for the money.

He said the funds were meant for the vulnerable, chronically ill people and single mothers taking care of more than three people in communities and who were already on social cash transfer records.

“Its true government is giving out emergency cash transfers to those who have been benefiting from the social cash transfer. Officers from the Ministry of Community Development conducted a survey in com-

munities just to update the database and they only did that for three to four days.

I know he was driving point because the council withdrew his official vehicle. We need leaders to think of their people in such manner so that they can work whole heartedly for the people. And it is like this suspension has given my mayor a whole lot of time to be innovative and invent things. I am very happy with his attitude. Now he has unleashed a new wheelbarrow which I find exciting. He told us yesterday about the creation of with the help of a welder from Kalingalinga , the Extra-Miles Bala .

It has the following features; 1. A Solar phone charging cable that can be used to charge both phones for the 'driver' and others at a small fee.

2. A mobile 'Billboard' that the likes of MTN, Airtel, Zamtel, Pepsi, CocaCola, Trade Kings etc can use to advertise the mass products at a fee.

3. A 'Fridge' (Joe Saka) for cold water for drinking by the 'driver' or clients.

‘We did not assault complainant’

A LUSAKA businessman has told the magistrates court that he did not assault the complainant in an assault case.

This is in a case were Izukanji Simbule, 24, a student, Cliff Simbule 50 a businessman, Sylvia Simbule, 44, a secretary, Mapalo Simbule 19 a student and Wiza Simbule 21, a student allegedly assaulted Chrisantius Changwereza, 34, of Makeni thereby causing him occasioning actual bodily harm on December 24 2019.

When the matter came up for defence yesterday, Cliff Simbule said on the material day he went to his workshop with his sons Izukanji, Wiza and Mapalo on December 24 2019.

He said while there he received a phone call from his sister Sylvia informing him that Mr. Changwereza wanted to collect his car.

He said he told Sylvia that the car was ready for collection and told her to inform Mr. Changwereza pick it at 12:00 hours.

He said they waited for Mr. Changwereza in up to 18:00hours but he didn’t show up.

He said when they arrived home, Sylvia received a phone call from Mr.Changwereza asking for his car.

He said a few minutes later, Mr. Changwereza called Sylvia again informing her that he was outside the gate.

He said Sylvia went out to talk to see him and after two minutes she went back in the house crying saying Mr. Changwereza had beaten her.

He said she told him that Mr.Changwereza wanted his car that same day and that they should give it to him.

He said he told Izukanji and Mapalo to go with Mr. Changwereza to the workshop to collect his car.

He said Mr.Changwereza started shouting and insulting Sylvia while approaching with a silver rod.

He said Izukanji stood in front of to protect Sylvia but Mr. Changwereza punched Izukanji.

He said he grabbed Izukanji and took him inside the yard while Mapalo and Wiza pleaded with Mr. Changwereza to leave.

He said they all went inside and Mr. Changwereza remained outside hitting the gate and shouting that he wanted his car.

And Sylvia said she had been cohabiting with Mr.Changwereza for about six years.

She said Mr. Changwereza usually took his car to her broth-

er, Cliff’s garage for repairs.

She said Mr. Changwereza called her on December 24, 2019 asking for his car.

She said they had problems in their relationship and Changwereza started putting pressure on her over the car.

She said she informed Cliff that Changwereza wanted to collect his Jeep Sylvia told the court that she went to the garage where they waited for him but he didn’t show up.

She said around 18:00 hours, Changwereza called asking her why they left the garage without waiting for him.

She said she told him to come the following day and a few minutes later Changwereza arrived at Cliff’s house.

She said she went to see him and he started shouting and beating her causing her to sustain injuries on her left hand and neck.

She said she did not assault Mr. Changwereza but he assaulted her and Izukanji.

She said she reported the assault to Kabwata Police station and later got a medical report.

The medical report issued to Sylvia Simbule did not indicate the name of the police officer nor his or her rank.

Questions to Cliff from the police prosecutor: Mr.Museta: where you happy that your sister was harassed?

Cliff: No. Mr: Museta, has the complainant taken you to police in the over six years you have known him?

Cliff: No Mr.Museta: for how long was the car in your custody?

Cliff: six months Questions to Sylvia: Mr. Museta: why did you go to Kabwata police instead of Chilenje police which is near your place?

Sylvia: because the officers at Chilenje were busy.

Mr.Museta: why did you receive medical assistance on the 27th December as indicated by the medical report?

Sylvia: the report shows 27th December because on the 24th it was a holiday.

Mr.Museta: did the complainant ever take you to the police in the six years you have known him?

Sylvia: No Mr.Museta: according to the testimony given by the witnesses, did you assault the complainant?

Sylvia: No, I didn’t.

Matter was adjourned to September 21 for continued defence.

N EXAMINER at Road Transport and Safety Agency has revealed that it is impossible to issue one number to two different vehicles.

Appearing at the Lusaka magistrate’s court before magistrate Jennipher Bwalya was Violet Mushiya who is the accused.

Witness Anthony Mubusha, 44 said he was employed at Road Transport and Safety Agency RTSA in 2013.

He said part of his duties is examination of driving licenses and certification of fitness of motor vehicles.

He said a client buys a fitness form and takes to the fitness office together with the vehicle.

Mr Mubusha, 44 said

A LUSAKA man claiming to be a juvenile has denied defiling a child in the Lusaka magistrate’s court.

Appearing at before magistrate Nsunge Chanda was Joshua Ntanga, 20, of John Laing accused of defiling a child.

It is alleged that on May 11 2020 Ntanga did have canal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16.

His grandmother told magistrate Chanda that he took the Ntanga when he was five years old and kept him for 15 years.

She said she did not know the year, month and date he was born but that he was 17 years old.

Magistrate Chanda said since the grandmother took him when he was five years old and kept him for 15 years that meant he was now 20 years old and was an adult.

She said Ntanga did not look like he was 17 years but an adult.

She said following grandmother’s explanation, he would be considered as adult as she was his guardian.

Magistrate Chanda read the charge to Ntanga but he pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer Ms. Sarah Larios asked the court to give Ntanga a chance to prove his age and not just relying on what the grandmother explained.

Magistrate Chanda said the grandmother knew him better and was therefore the right person to know his age as his guardian.

She told Ms. Larios that if she wanted, she could provide the necessary documents to prove otherwise.

A 53-YEAR-OLD man has been arraigned in the Choma Fast Track court for allegedly sexually molesting his13-year-old step granddaughter.

In this matter, Kizito Muleya is charged with defilement of a child contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Allegations are that Muleya had unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl believed to be below the age of 16.

The alleged incident happened on July 5, 2020 in Choma.

When he appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, Muleya denied the allegations levelled against him prompting the court to record a plea of not guilty.

Before the Court could read out the charge to him, Muleya was in-

The man has since been arraigned in the Choma Magistrates Court on suspicion that he stole the money.

In this matter, Mathews Chilundika, 45, a Farmer of Itezhi Tezhi is charged with theft by agent contrary to sections 272 and 280(b) of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia.

Allegations are that Chilundika having been entrusted with K50, 000 by Judith Lungu for him for safe keeping stole the same money.

The alleged theft is said to have occurred between August 6 and 8 in Choma.

When he appeared for plea before Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri, he denied the charge against him.

Choma juvenile denies stealing TV

A 15-YEAR-OLD hawker has been arraigned to the Choma Juveniles Court for theft of a Plasma Television set among other items valued at more than K4, 500.

In this matter the boy, is charged with house breaking and theft contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Allegations are that

A 29-YEAR-OLD security guard has been sentenced to 24 months imprisonment after he admitted to breaking into the Road Development Agency (RDA) storeroom and stealing property worth more than K75, 000.

In this matter, Francis Shakamina ,29, was charged with Baleni Sibanda, 37, a bricklayer for breaking into a building and committing a felony therein contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that the two broke into RDA storeroom and stole eight wheels, two tyres, eight pockets of cement, 18Ă—20 litres of oil and two pairs of safety boots all valued at K75, 953 the property of RDA. The theft happened between July 17 and August 6 in Choma.

pleaded guilty whilst his co-accused denied the allegations.

According to the facts by Public Prosecutor Pearson Chilumbu, the theft was unearthed by the institution's senior engineer after he toured the storeroom in the company of a contractor who wanted to see the materials being used for road signage.

The matter was reported to Choma Police Station where detective woman constable Martha Mweenda carried out investigations that led to the apprehension of Shakamani and consequently the recovery of the tyres and boots.

In passing the sentence, Magistrate Mupemo observed the fact that Shakamina was a first offender who readily admitted the charge, however, she noted that such cases were on the upswing in Choma and that the sentence was a deterrent to would-be offenders.

Trial for Sibanda was set for September 28 and he was granted K5, 000 bail in his own recognisance.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has issued a certificate to commit murder accused Chrispin Kawanga 32, a driver of Mtendere to the high Court for murdering Getrude Lungu on April 19 2020.

Kawanga appeared before magistrate Jennipher Bwalya on Friday for explanation of the charge.

Public prosecutor Mr. Museta informed the magistrate that the director of public prosecutions has issued the certificate to commit Kawanga to the high Court, and the magistrates acted on the instructions.

In another related matter, Christopher Sheleni 23 of Matero has been committed to the high Court on charge of mur-

It is alleged that Sheleni on February 10 2020 did murder Emmanuel Iimbwa.

Public prosecutor Mr. Museta informed magistrate Bwalya that the director of public prosecutions has issued the certificate to commit Sheleni to the high Court, and the magistrates acted on the instructions.

Magistrate Bwalya explained to Sheleni that he was appearing for explanation of the charge as it is a matter tried at the high court.

She told Sheleni that he does not have to say anything but that he will take his plea at the high Court.

Sheleni inquired from magistrate Bwalya when he will be taken to the high Court for trial.

AUTOMOTIVE Futsal Academy coach Andrea Christoforetti has described yesterday’s trials held at Automotive Futsal Arena as a success.

In an interview, Christoforetti said the league had identified talented players who will be signed up to join division one and Super League teams for the continued growth of the sport.

“We had trials in the morning and tomorrow we will conduct another session where players will be assessed. We have identified some quality players who we can push through to join our teams.

“The registration has been a success. We have 12 teams for the national division one league and we have 10 teams which will compete in the Super League kicking off next week when we finalise the signing of contracts,” Christoforetti said.

The 2020/2021 Wildcat Premier Futsal League (PFL) will kick off on September 4 2020.

PFL Chairman Tarak Mehta said earlier that the PFL was doing everything to ensure that the league returns after the 2019-2020 Futsal Season was declared null and void due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Mehta said PFL had delayed to resume the league to supplement governments’ efforts in preventing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic which caused the premature end of the 2019/2020 Futsal season.

ARELY a day after Damiano Mutale threatened to go back to court to activate the cases where he sued FAZ, the global soccer governing body FIFA responded by setting September 1st as the date for the much anticipated meeting between FIFA, FAZ and aggrieved football stakeholders.

go Omba confirmed that the meeting will be held on Tuesday through a video conference.

In a letter addressed to FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala, Omba said the virtual meeting will comprise a representative from FAZ, Ministry of Sports, National Council officials and Maximum of three representatives of the aggrieved parties from the electoral process.

Omba said the agenda of the meeting includes opening remarks by FIFA followed by

remarks from the Ministry of Sports or the National Sports Council of Zambia NSCZ and remarks from alleged aggrieved parties on the electoral process.

FIFA will then state the way forward after hearing the grievances from the concerned parties to put an end to the squabbles which have affected the Zambian game.

Meanwhile soccer administrator Blackwell Siwale said the aggrieved individuals will hold a meeting to select three individuals who will repre-

sent them during the meeting with FIFA. Speaking in an interview, Siwale said the aggrieved parties will present facts on how the FAZ executive had continued to stay in office illegally after their mandate ended.

“Among us who are aggrieved we will find people who are eloquent enough to drive a point to FIFA and make them understand the impact of football in Zambia.

“We need to show FIFA that the current executive is sitting in office illegally today, has

WIFE BRINGS HOME BOYFRIEND AS CHURCH ELDER UNLIKE catching a cheating man, nabbing an unfaithful woman is not easy.

This is because like a clumsy bear, men always leave behind trails of their infidelity, like scented perfume and lipstick on their shirts, lodge receipts in pockets and raunchy text messages in their phones.

A Plumtree man’s world fell apart when he busted his wife in a steamy embrace with a man she had been bringing home after she initially introduced him as her church elder.

reportedly vowed never to “trust a woman again” flew into a rage after he caught his now ex-wife Semkelwe Ncube flirting with her lover only identified as Tshuma in their matrimonial bedroom. The heartbreaking discovery reportedly happened on Saturday last week.

Mpala, an informal trader, reportedly caught Ncube cheating after he received a tip-off from a neighbour that Tshuma who was always visiting Ncube mostly in his absence, had sneaked into his house.

According to a relative, Excellent Nyathi of Old Lobengula was touched when he heard high pitched cries from his neighbour’s house where a man only identified as SaMaDu was pummelling his wife Partel Mlilo allegedly accusing her of being a woman of loose morals. The source went on to say Nyathi rushed to the house and restrained the angry SaMaDu from battering his hapless wife.

“He left when the couple was on talking terms at around 9pm,”said the relative.

But Nyathi did not know that by intervening in the couple’s feud he had courted trouble for himself.

Later on in the evening he heard a knock on his door and upon opening, the source said, SaMaDu grabbed him by the throat accusing him of causing a rift in their union.

The source said while he was trying to explain his side of the story a heavy slap landed on his cheek.

“He cried for help as the marauding couple took turns to hit him with open hands and kicked him with booted feet all over the body. They left him shirtless and with torn trousers,” said a neighbour. The source said the couple demanded money from Nyathi.

“They demanded money from Nyathi so that they could free him but he could not give them anything since he had nothing on him,” said a source. Hearing that he had no money seems to have stoked more anger as they turned more violent and smashed windows with beer bottles.

The source said Nyathi’s mother Juliet Ndlovu (48) phoned police officers who rushed to the scene and arrested the violent couple.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed: “We are investigating a case of assault and malicious damage to property.

“A couple from Old Lobengula suburb beat their neighbour accusing him of causing problems in their marriage. They also damaged windows with beer bottles.”

Gokwe man poisons ‘jinxed’ father A GOKWE man poisoned his father whom he accused of causing misfortune in his life.

Justine Chakauya (28) of Village 15A, Musadzi Village, Chireya in Gokwe, was arraigned before a Gokwe magistrate facing a murder charge after he poisoned his father Benias Chakauya.

Gokwe magistrate Musaiona Shortgame remanded him in custody and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecuting, Liberty Chimwaradze told the court that Chakauya approached a traditional healer and told him that his father was causing

misfortune in his life and he was hindering him from amassing wealth.

The traditional healer, the court heard, gave the accused a concoction which he went and put into his father’s drink.

Upon consuming the laced drink, the now deceased fell unconscious, bleeding from the mouth and nose. He was rushed to Gokwe Hospital where he died upon admission. Chakauya was arrested and arraigned before the courts.

The accused left the court dumbfounded after pleading guilty to the offence and telling the court he did it because

his father was behind his misfortune.

“I do admit to the charges of causing the death of my father. I did it out of frustration because he was the one who was causing all the misfortunes I have been experiencing in my life,” he told the court. He said he never thought the concoction would kill his father.

“I was just taking the advice of a healer who gave me the poison which I then administered to my father resulting in his death. I never thought it would kill him, I just thought I was muthi that would make me rich,” he told the court.

Poisonous feed kills cattle NAIROBI - Emurua-Dikir MP Johanna Ngeno is counting losses after his herd of 24 Holstein Friesian cattle worth Sh2.5 million died after feeding on a poisonous imported mineral product.

According to Olekisiara farm manager Fredrick Mutai, the pedigree cattle started dropping dead one after another, minutes after feeding on the product (name withheld because the Standard Digital could not independently verify whether the product was responsible for the death of the animals).

‘Black Panther’ dies

By TROY MUKUPA ACTOR and producer Chadwick Boseman famous for his lead role in ‘Black Panther’ passed away on Friday after a long battle with colon cancer.

Best known for bringing to life the character of King T’Challa in ,’Black Panther’, Chadwick was born on November 29, 1976 in South Carolina.

He was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016.

In the last four years, the cancer had progressed to stage IV. Despite being diagnosed with stage III colon cancer, Chadwick preserved through it all and featured in movies like Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), 21 Bridges (2019) and the most notably Black Panther (2018) for which he won a NAACP Image Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

All were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.

He died at his home in Los Angeles, California age 43 with his wife and family by his side.

Combating Covid-19 in Markets, bus stations

By NOEL IYOMBWA THE Informal Sector Community Response Team has continued contributing towards the fight against Covid-19 panedmic.

ISCRT consists of Commuters Rights Association of Zambia,Bus and Taxi Drivers Association of Zambia,Organised Vendors Traders Multi-Purpose Corporative Society and the Southern Africa Cross Borders Traders Association of Zambia.

The consortium, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has so far distributed 8,000 facemasks to market and bus stations.

Jeffrey Katoposha, a representative from the organizations, said that they have distributed to City Market and Lumumba bus station.

He said that the consor-

tium decided to distribute to markets and bus stations because that is where compliance levels still remain a challenge, adding that it is important that marketeers mask up.

Consortium chairperson,

Mr Aron Kamuti observed that there is a serious challenge of compliance among the general public.

He said that commuters are not adhering to the guidelines hence the inniative to distribute the mask.

Team coordinator Pascal Chikumbi said that the team is elated by the level of adherence being demonstrated or implemented by all Chain Stores located in various Shopping Malls, other trading stores and Corporate In-

stitutions towards COVID-19.

“Unfortunately, our people in informal Sector such as Bus Stations, Markets, Street Vendors, Bus Drivers and Conductors are not doing much to compel passengers and customers respectively

to mask-up before and during any interaction or transaction,” he said.

“This is the reason why as IS-CRT started a Robust COVID-19 Community sensitization and distribution of face masks which were complimented by Ministry of Health. In the course of distribution through Market Managers, Market Committee Chairpersons and Bus Station Drivers committees, we will prioritize distributing to the most vulnerable within such gatherings and then to the rest of people,”Mr Chikumbi said.

He said that the team strongly feels that the exercise will play a pivotal role in raising awareness amongst people in Markets and Bus stations where compliance towards COVID-19 preventive guidelines is and has been extremely low.

‘Kopala artistes need proper management’

EVENTS and music promoter Isaac Siwale has observed that there is need for emerging Copperbelt-based artiste to seek proper managers to avoid failed music careers.

Speaking in an interview with the Nation Lifestyle, Siwale said there is great music talent from the Copperbelt but most artistes from there are lacking good managers.

He argued that of late, there have been many stories of good and upcoming artistes failing to excel because they rushed into management contracts or failed to acquire one. “ As a music artiste manager and promoter, I have observed that most artistes coming outside Lusaka are in a hurry to get known. As such they end up signing bad contracts with some managers here in Lusaka,” said Siwale. “ A good artiste is one with a vision and plan on how they will advance their music career.”

And Siwale also called King Hustler, C.E.O of Hustlers Events Management, an artiste and events management firm, has commended the progress of new Kopala rap duo Chanda Na Kay. He has advised the duo to be patient and seek proper management for their music careers to be guaranteed.

“I was born in 1989 in Kafue. The love of music has always been in me but it was in 1999 just after completing high school when I took it more on the serious side. My first song was titled Baby Osakamba kamba in 2008 but due to financial problems I failed to promote it,” Adept said.

Despite the financial challenges he never relented on the love of music.

“I have just recorded a new single titled Nina Blower where I featured Uncle Jah, Ruff Kid and Cap10 Jay. The song Nina Blower talks of someone who has made it in life despite the challenges of life. The song is yet to hit the airwaves together with a video.”

Asked on how he managed to bring big names on the track.

“It’s not easy because most big names in music are not accommodating to upcoming artistes. I am greatful to Uncle Jah, Ruff Kid and Cap10 Jay for being so understanding and accommodative to me. It was all fun working with them,” he said.

He said he is in the game to stay as he is already working on an album.

“I’m already working on an album. I have done tracks like Chalo Changa and Lord of Lords all produced by Amourskole Fravor.

People should look forward to more songs from me and more collaborations with renowned names,” said Adept.

King K, Rich Bizzy in ‘ Chinkamba’

LUSAKA-BASED singer and dancer Joseph Kapyala Phiri famously known as‘ King K’ is expected to unleash a new song titled ‘Chinkamba’ featuring Rich Bizzy.

King K said in a statement that the song was produced by ‘Bicko Bicko’ and is addressing love. explained that the song encourages people in love to stick to each other both in good and bad times.

MUSICIAN RasDee is an emerging artiste that has a lot to offer in the music circles.

RasDee whose real name is David Mwansa Musonda identifies himself as a songwriter who has worked with prominent artistes like Kantu, Yellow Dove and Wisdors. He is also known for leading Church musical sessions in his hometown.

Musonda is the second born in a family of nine and was born in Chambishi.

Growing up on the Copperbelt, he unfortunately lost his mother when he was only doing his eleventh grade at Kalulushi High School.

Even though the loss broke him apart, he successfully completed his secondary education.

He has since developed an interest in rap music at an early age, getting his inspiration from the likes of SlapDee, who had a major impact into influencing the young rapper into doing battle rap contests way back in High School.

His music career, influence and direction comes from the fact that he is a man of faith.

RasDee says he was inspired by the Holy Spirit through Prophet William Marion Branham, Martin Luther, Hilsong United, Ephraim Mutalange, Suwilanji, Psalm51,

RasDee started recording his music within his neighbourhood; creating unprofessional Music with the likes of Jontos, DJ Mustard, Wizdors, Psalm51, Crew Gee and Kumbukani Groove. His first professional song was recorded by Big Scenes and he called it “Overcomers“ The song opened doors for him, leading to a contract under DJ Mzengaman at MBeats Generation Music. There are a number of benefits that can come from a community-led approach to managing and protecting natural resources like wildlife.

Community conservancies allow chiefdoms to take ownership of their own destiny, as they make it possible for indigenous Zambians to participate in game ranching. Communities can partner with private companies to open safari lodges for local and foreign tourists or to provide live animals and meat for sale.

In a 2013 report for the Wildlife Producers Association of Zambia, Dr Peter Lindsey estimated that game ranching, crocodile farming and the game capture and trading industries have a combined turnover of approximately USD15.7 million per annum.

The high demand for legal wildlife products like game meat, combined with the fact that commercial game ranching is yet to take off in Zambia, means there is potential for community conservancies to reap maximum benefits and contribute to the creation of a sustainable wildlife economy.

Conservancies can help reduce destructive poaching and the illegal bushmeat trade which is a major problem that causes wildlife declines and undermines economies and livelihoods.

One of the challenges with the current model of conservation in Zambia is that many communities feel wildlife belongs to Government.

Community conservancies can change this since local communities will own wildlife and directly benefit from it. They will want to conserve it and be more inclined to report poachers as poaching would be seen as stealing from the community.

This is exactly what Namibia is witnessing in its conservancies, where it is reported that less than a third

The best way to safeguard Zambia’s wildlife will be to empower as many communities as possible.

In this regard, community owned game ranches and conservancies are a great idea because they prove that we can use conservation as a tool to fight poverty while also helping to conserve our precious wildlife resources.

LCOHOL consumption is one of the most popular pastime activities in Zambia. It is usually common especially on weekends to see most Zambians, adults and teenagers, engage in various entertainment and recreational activities dominated by binge drinking.

Although alcohol consumption can be seen as an easier means of having fun or unwinding, drinking it responsibly has always been a challenge for most consumers which is why most Zambians are associated with heavy drinking.

According to a ResearchGate journal published in April, 2011, on ‘Alcohol Consumption in Lusaka Urban,’ the high prevalence of alcohol use among Zambian adults indicates an urgent need for specific measures such as public awareness campaigns, policies, and regulations.

This recommendation, though made nine years ago, is even more applicable in this difficult period of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With most drinking places and hang outs shut down in the country, to mitigate the spread of the Corona virus, there is still a likelihood of people abusing alcohol and most probably, consuming it from undesignated areas. Worse still, there are people consuming it illicitly. It is not surprising that there is a possibility of increased consumption of illegal

and illicit alcohols like Kachasu during this time.

Irresponsible and excessive consumption of alcohol is a growing problem in Zambia and people need to be aware of the consequential effects. Medical experts have always preached against heavy drinking, citing liver damage, increased heart problems, stroke and diabetes as some of the fatal effects.

It is against this background that Zambia, as nation needs to move towards responsible drinking. But what is responsible drinking? And what role should each one of us play? Zambian Breweries, the largest distributor and producers of alcoholic beverages have since developed the ‘ Smart Drinking’ campaign to help the country move towards responsible drinking.

According to Zambian Breweries Director of Corporate Affairs Ezekiel Sekele, “ responsible drinking means drinking with moderation, while not letting alcohol run your life or your relationships, stopping underage consumption, and avoiding drinking and driving.”

This he said in a bid to explain ‘Smart Drinking’ which was mainly also introduced to help people drink responsibly under the Covid-19 restrictions. It is also meant to dissuade people from taking illicit alcohols as explained by Zambian Breweries Country Director Jose Moran.

“As Zambian Breweries, we shall continue to create awareness on the effects of illicit alcohol through our Smart Drinking initiative. We take our responsibility of alcohol very seriously and we shall sensitise the

public through the mass media, and of course, through our social media platforms like Facebook,” he said, stressing that Illicit alcohol is not only harmful to health, but also constrains Zambia’s wealth creation.

“Illicit alcohol is produced in unhygienic and uncontrolled environments. This poses a huge threat to the health of consumers. Moreover, illegal alcohol dealers do not remit taxes to government; thereby, denying our country the much-needed economic development,” he stressed.

Apart from the Smart Drinking campaign, Zambian Breweries has been constantly engaged in various activities to promote responsible drinking. Educational talks to schools on dangers of underage drinking, management of entertainment events to ensure responsible drinking and also supporting initiatives that lessen road traffic accidents due to excessive alcohol intake are examples of such activities.

But what should you as an individual do to promote responsible drinking. Experts suggest that You can learn how to drink responsibly by following simple steps.

This involves establishing one's purpose of drinking or simply setting a drinking Goal.

One also needs to assess their current alcohol Intake. This means knowing your safe alcohol limit.

It is also advisable to purchase alcohol in small, measured amounts and most importantly, watch out for peer pressure. Let's all work towards creating a ' Smart Drinking' Zambia by drinking responsibly.
