The Mississippi state legislature closed session on March 29. They passed many laws in this regular session that will go into effect on July 1 of this year. These are highlights of some of the new bills that you should be aware of going into effect this weekend.

Ole Miss is anticipating a sellout of season tickets for the fifth year in a row. Although student season tickets have been on sale since April 10 for the 2017 football season, students are continuing to purchase their tickets well into the summer or until they sell out. “Last year was a record-breaking year, and while we are slightly behind that pace, we are ahead of previous years,” said Kyle Campbell, associate athletics director of media and public relations.

As of Wednesday, more than 6,600 student tickets have been sold at $130 each, leaving nearly 3,600 left until the student section is sold out for the season. Last year’s student section renovations increased student ticket sales from 8,100 to 10,325. “Ole Miss football has become a bucket-list experience for students and the general public alike,” Campbell said. “Fans don’t want to miss out on those seven gameday opportunities, regardless of ticket price, team success or other factors.” Tickets can be purchased online through the Ole Miss
sports website. Students must be members of the Rebel25 program before they can purchase tickets. The membership requires an annual $25 fee that goes towards Ole Miss Athletics. If tickets are still available on August 1, the $25 fee will be eliminated. Upon purchase, tickets will be loaded onto the student’s Ole Miss ID card, but can be transferred to other students throughout the season. Selling a student ID is prohibited by the university, but more information involving how to transfer tickets will be available closer to the start of the season. While some insist on pur-

We live in a world where communication seems so close, yet, feels distant in regard to conversing with others. The act of listening is a part of the human experience, but sometimes it seems to not be in full force when interactions occur. For far too long there has been consistent talking back and forth on a variety of issues but no actual action on this campus. We must come together and understand what we want without always turning things into a verbal fight. We all have our opinions,
ideologies, and experiences yet, time after the time, discussions tend to turn into arguments. Why is this taking place? Because everyone thinks their opinions, personal philosophies, ideas and experiences are more important than the person they are speaking with. While at times fighting for your ideals is necessary, at this point in time it’s not. We are at a turning point in society where illusions are taken as reality and speaking the truth is attacked. So will you be a placebo or an actual dose to people in your life? Many people would consider their beliefs to be set in stone, but that just isn’t
true. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson didn’t want to give his support for the Voting Rights Bill of 1965 at first until he consulted further with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his associates on why the bill was important for the United States. Changing your beliefs isn’t compromising but it’s the act of getting closer to what you believe is the truth, and even if you disagree with something, there will always be something that you could agree on. Too many times people ignore or misread a situation by making preconceived notions about something. This leads to closed-minded-
ness. Repeatedly, this ends personal relationships, professional connections and even causes a rift in organizations regardless of the initiative. Talking past each other, as I like to call it, has eclipsed our society in the dark like the generations before us. Discussions turn into brutal arguments where at a time people ignore all the topics that affect our reality to keep relationships intact. Silence is dangerous though as nothing gets done and the problems we face, rather some groups deal with it more than others, get worse. Going around and assuming about someone or something doesn’t do
anything but hurt yourself more than it would for that person or group. Now I acknowledge that many do not agree with this act of “listening.” I respect that. But I came to that conclusion by listening to them! Go out and try to listen for once. It will be hard, but rewarding. When you see how productive discussions go, it may change your perspective or thoughts on a lot of things. We can better focus on issues in our communities that we can actually fix. Could Brett Favre be Mississippi’s next governor?

What if I told you that one day celebrities and sports stars could serve in Washington, D.C. as your United States representatives or senators and in your state capitals as governors or lieutenant governors? Hear me out. Ronald Reagan, a former Hollywood star, served as governor of California and president of the United States. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the “Terminator,” served as governor of California. Jesse
Ventura, former professional WWE wrestler, served as governor of Minnesota. Al Franken, former writer for Saturday Night Live, currently represents the state of Minnesota in the United States Senate. On Comedy Central’s “The Roast of Donald Trump” in 2011, Trump unofficially announced his intention to run for the presidency, a statement that roasters, such as Gilbert Gottfried and Larry King, laughed at. However, here we are in 2017 and Donald J. Trump, mastermind behind the Trump brand and lead star of “The Apprentice,” is indeed the president of the United States. The strategy that Trump used in his presidential run shows that he was able to capitalize on his notoriety and background in the entertainment business. From key phrases like “Fake News,” “Build a Wall” and “Make America Great
Again,” to the building of his political brand through his famous MAGA hats and punchline attacks on opponents such as “Low Energy JEB!” (Jeb Bush) and “Sleepy Carson” (Dr. Ben Carson, current secretary of housing and urban development), Trump ran his campaign like a reality TV show and it paid off. Politics are as exciting and movie-esque as they’ve ever been before, and Trump’s victory begs the question: will this begin a new age in American politics, where celebrities rise to the challenge of running for office? If it’s any indication, Oprah Winfrey and Mark Zuckerberg have not ruled out the possibility of a 2020 run, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson “announced” he was going to run for president in 2020 with Tom Hanks as his running mate. Hypothetically, on a more local level, having someone

as famous and well-respected as hall of fame quarterback Brett Favre, of Hattiesburg, run for governor of Mississippi, and hall of fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, of Starkville, run for lieutenant governor of Mississippi, doesn’t sound impossible. Brett Favre rose to fame through his time at the University of Southern Mississippi and has held numerous National Football League passing records during his career with the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets. Jerry Rice had an impressive college career at Mississippi Valley State, went on to play in numerous Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, and holds almost every National Football League statistical record for wide receivers. Although the governor and the lieutenant governor don’t run on the same ticket

in Mississippi, I’d be willing to bet that a Favre and Rice campaigning duo would excite the constituency of Mississippi as much as it would football fans. The football antidotes and leadership experiences that Favre, as a quarterback, and Rice, as a wide receiver, would provide Mississippi voters the motivation to wake up on Election Day and check the box next to their names. Maybe we can thank President Trump for this, maybe not, but don’t be surprised if in 2020 you wake up to watch a nationally televised Donald Trump vs. Oprah Winfrey presidential debate as Governor Brett Favre is addressing the state of Mississippi from his office in Jackson. HB 1322 relaxes guidelines on alcohol distribution
House Bill 1322 will now allow any “small craft brewery” in the state to sell light wine and beer on site. This does not give permission for these companies to act as an in-house beer g shop. Miscellaneous Laws Mississippi lawmakers approved House Bill 645, known as the “Back the Badge Act,” or the “Red, Blue, and Med Lives Matter Act.” This law will enhance the penalty for any crime committed against a police officer or first responder.

House Bill 1116 says that any special public meeting must be announced on a public body’s open website at least one hour before the meeting takes place. House Bill 686 was amended to state that residents may request a revision of their tax returns for three years following each tax season, while Senate Bill 2445 provides a data match program with the Department of Revenue (DOR) that lets all financial institutions have immediate access to residents who are behind on taxes. The current law has the DOR send the financial institution levies when a person defaults on their taxes. This new law is intended to make the process quicker and more efficient.

Having a regular seat allows me to come in right before the game begins and enjoy the Grove with my family longer.” Although some students preferred the previous location of the student section, the thrill of going to an Ole Miss football game is something that they can’t pass up. “I liked the old student section better because it wasn’t directly in the sun, but the new one is closer to the Grove so it has its pros and cons,” Chris Murton, a senior finance major, said. Many incoming students are also planning on purchasing their student tickets. “I have not bought tickets yet, but I do plan on buying them because that’s a major part of the Ole Miss experience,” incoming freshman Delaney Cavanaugh said. “The football games and the atmosphere on gamedays are one of the many reasons I decided to go to Ole Miss.” Regardless of previous seasons or issues with the team, football ticket sales seem to remain steady. The first game of the season is set for 7:30 p.m. September 2 against South Alabama.

Summer movie guide: noteworthy films of July
Summer is one of the biggest times of the year for movies, and July is no exception. Several studios are attempting to release the best they’ve got in the hopes of landing a blockbuster. Some look promising; others not so much. The idea is fresh and it is definitely the next modern horror film to look out for.

Wish Upon (July 14) What would summer be without some classic Hollywood horror? “Wish Upon” is the next horror film from John R. Leonetti and Orion Pictures.

The Emoji Movie (July 28) By far the most controversial movie on this list, “The Emoji Movie” has received tremendous backlash online from the very first trailer. Starring “Silicon Valley’s” T. J. Miller, the movie follows Gene, a “meh” emoji, on his journey to save the world of emojis inside a young boy’s smartphone before he deletes it. As previously stated, the movie has been heavily criticized for its concept alone as product placement taken too far. This negativity along with reportedly little interest in the film around a month before its premiere means that if you plan on skipping any of these movies this summer, it’s this one.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7) Perhaps the most anticipated movie on this list, fans of superhero movies have been anxiously awaiting Spider-Man’s first foray as an official part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Peter Parker as he attempts to balance his high school life alongside his newfound career as the titular hero under the guidance of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Continuing where 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” left off, the film follows the ongoing war between humans and intelligent apes for control of the Earth. The film introduces Woody Harrelson as The Colonel, the villain who leads the army of humans. Both “Rise” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” have been popular with critics and audiences alike, and “War for the Planet of the Apes” seems no less likely to blow away viewers when it comes out mid-July.

Album review: Lorde returns with sophomore album
with the track “Perfect Places.” The line, “Now I can’t stand to be alone,” describes one’s inability to sit at home with their thoughts. “Have another drink, get lost in us / This is how we get notorious” portrays the party culture that Lorde has partaken in. Looking for happiness, she has fallen into the world of sex, alcohol, and drugs. Despite the appearance of happiness, this “perfect place” does not exist without the love of her life, whomever that might be.

Toying with the self-doubt that creeps within the listener, one can imagine her inability to stop loving her partner on the track “Writer in the Dark,” despite his fleeting love for her, or a tinge of jealousy that Lorde experiences, despite knowing that her love is unmet. Human emotion at its finest shines through with her words of surrender. The crescendo of emotion arrives on the fifth track on the album, “Liability.” Singing of the despair she feels following

herself, Lorde moved back to New Zealand to gather her thoughts. Working on her sophomore album, “Melodrama,” Lorde spent time in New York and New Zealand looking for inspiration. Released June 16, “Melodrama” received immediate critical praise. An album full of growth and sadness, the listener gets to see into the personal life of Lorde. Tracks such as “The Louvre,” where Lorde discusses the beauty of a relationship she has just begun, speaks to her insecurities about her ability to maintain a meaningful relationship, especially following the end of a long term relationship, as alluded to in the first track on the album, “Green Light.” While some might view this album as a run of the mill pop album about lost love, it is so much more than that. This is an album that

Biggest winners and biggest losers of NBA draft

Winners
Phoenix Suns – Pick 4 – Josh Jackson, SF
Sacramento Kings – Pick 5 – De’Aaron Fox, PG The speedy playmaker from Kentucky has a high ceiling, and I think will develop quickly with the Kings’ current system. If Sacramento gives Fox the ball to control and run the offense for the young team, rather than one of their other subpar options in Darren Collinson or Ty Lawson, he will take his game to a solidified NBA level. The John Wall comparisons are a bit premature, but if he can improve his jumper and utilize his speed, he will be just as effective in the years to come.
Minnesota Timberwolves – Pick 16 – Justin Patton, C The T-Wolves are on here more for their blockbuster trade, not as much for their actual pick. Acquiring Jimmy Butler for a couple of young guards and a lower pick was a steal for Minnesota. Kris Dunn had a disappointing season and Zach Lavine just came off a season-ending ACL injury, so I think the Timberwolves had a great trade.
With Wiggins and Towns having quality seasons last year for the club, a proven two-way star is exactly what they need to get on the path to the playoffs, and with the addition of Patton they now have a promising backup for Towns.
Losers:
Chicago Bulls – Pick 7 – Lauri Markkanen, PF The trade for Jimmy Butler alone is the reason for them on this part of the list. I do not think dealing an All-Star was a bad idea. It was time for them to move on if they were not going to build a championship roster around him. However, the return they got made it a joke. Yes, I do think LaVine and Dunn will be good for them in the future since the Bulls have an aging backcourt. However, they got no additional assets, they essentially traded Butler for those two and then switched picks. I like Markkanen’s game and think he has a big future, but I do not think a floor-spreading 7-footer is what the doctor ordered for Chicago, especially when

New York Knicks – Pick 8 – Frank Ntilikina, PG I do not think the Frenchman would have been a bad pick for any team or executive who scouted him. There were reports of President Phil Jackson sleeping through tryouts, he didn’t watch the NCAA tournament, and he didn’t travel to scout talent because of health concerns. Ntilikina is an athletic combo guard who looks like his game could translate well to the NBA, but in my opinion there were better picks available. As previously mentioned, Smith Jr. and Monk were still around. Both athletic shooters with a lot of upside, something the Knicks lack currently. I doubt Jackson scouted Frank any further than watching highlights or maybe a couple games on TV, so an uneducated pick was used on a potential league starter rather than a potential league superstar.
long transition period into the league, so I think he’s a good pick. But not for Boston. The Celtics showed in the playoffs that they could win without their beloved star Isaiah Thomas. I thought this would lead the team to try to deal IT4, and get their long-term point man from this loaded draft class. Instead, they got the No. 3 pick and a future pick they
probably won’t need. That No. 3 pick turned out to be a great selection for a spot they don’t need to fill. With the No. 1 pick the team initially had before they traded it to the Philadelphia 76ers they could’ve drafted one of the standout guards of the future, or used it to get assets from someone else, even down to snagging Lonzo Ball and making the Lakers pay up for him.

My opinion before the draft was whoever picks Josh Jackson wins. Jackson is a great two-way player with plenty of upside. His versatility and athleticism, combined with his size, give him the ability to play most positions on the floor. He fits well into the Suns’ team right now at the 3 spot, his preferred position. If Phoenix’s backcourt of Bledsoe and Booker continue performing and Jackson can gel with Marquese Chriss on the wings, the Suns will be a playoff contender in the West very soon.

Bracket racket: Which MLB teams will make noise?

As we approach the MLB All-Star break, also referred to as the halfway point of the season, postseason talk gets more serious. Many teams have proven they deserve to be in the playoffs, while some hope that the second half of the season will fuel them to stealing a wild card spot. Here’s my predictions for the teams who will be playing in October. National League East:
Washington is going nowhere. Baseball’s little brother, the Philadelphia Phillies, give the Nationals a sense of security moving forward, and they should take advantage of having the worst baseball team in their division. They have some tough games ahead of them after the break, but I see them holding their current lead in the second half to win the division. National League Central: Milwaukee is playing great baseball right now, but the Cubs have finally steered back on track after a rough start to the 2017 season. Their starting rotation is finally heating back up after the worrisome threemonth wait for Chicago fans. I see the division running down between these two, however, I think the Cubs will pull through to win.

National League West: Currently they’re the best division in baseball, hands down. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Arizona or Colorado took the crown, but the Dodgers are the hottest team in baseball right now. Whether it’s rookie Cody Bellinger or some of the more seasoned vets, such as Yasiel Puig and Clayton Kershaw, this team has the potential to win their division and make a deep run in the playoffs. National League Wild Card(s): I see the west taking both wild card spots. Both the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies are playing phenomenal baseball right now. So good that the next best team in the wild card race currently is 7.5 games behind. Unless these teams don’t show up in the second half, I fully expect them to make the
postseason. American League East: This is definitely one of the more competitive leagues in the MLB. The whole league is within 5-7 wins of each other. While the Yankees and Red Sox have been stealing headlines, none of these teams should be counted out completely. At the end of the day, I see Boston taking this division and heading into the postseason with the same momentum they’re carrying right now. American League Central: Despite a recent losing streak heading into the break, I see Cleveland taking the division. They finished the 2016 season with a chip on their shoulder and will look to head back into postseason play come October. American League West: There is something special going on in Hous-
ton. FiveThirtyEight.com has the Astros listed with the highest percentage to win their division, and it makes complete sense. They’ve been dominant since the beginning of the season, despite many injuries, and show no signs of slowing down. American League Wild Card(s): Aaron Judge and the Yankees will be taking one of the wild card spots. The other is up for grabs, and saying that I feel confident in one team having an advantage over others would be a lie. I think this comes down to the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals for the second wild card depending on who shows up to play during the second half. For now, I’m seeing double with the Twins taking the final wild card spot in the American League.
