Reba McEntire had such a good time hosting “CMA Country Christmas” last year, she’s back to do it again – with some very famous friends along. Fellow country-music superstars Martina McBride and Brad Paisley are on the bill – as is the legendary Tony Bennett – as ABC airs the special’s ninth annual edition Monday, Dec. 10. Recorded at Nashville’s Belmont University, the show also features Diana Krall (Bennett’s latest recording partner, on the Gershwin tribute album “Love Is Here to Stay”), Brett Eldredge, Amy Grant, Dan + Shay, Dustin Lynch, Old Dominion, Michael W. Smith, Lindsey Stirling, Brett Young and the Isaacs. A recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors this month, McEntire says “it was a lot of fun” to return as “CMA Country Christmas” host. “We had wonderful artists come in and help us. I got to sing with the Isaacs, a family gospel group ... and I sing a song in the opening with a group of kids who are dancers. I was watching them more than I was paying attention to what I was doing!” McEntire adds that she was “so glad” to have McBride on board, calling her “a wonderful talent and a great friend.” And if popular-music icon Bennett seems a surprising choice for “CMA Country Christmas,” McEntire reports

that “everybody was totally in awe” of him: “There was a standing ovation immediately when he walked out on stage. It was just a very warm experience for everybody – and when he performed, it was just like, ‘Wow! He still has it.”’ Bennett says that being on the special reminds him of when he “had doubts about doing a country song when (conductor/producer) Mitch Miller brought me ‘Cold Cold Heart’ back in 1951, and I said to Mitch, ‘This is a country song, so I am not sure I am able to sing it.’ But Mitch was persuasive, and we recorded it more in the vein of a pop song, and it became a No. 1 hit ... so of course, I had no qualms at all about singing on ‘CMA Country Christmas.”’ Noting that he performs in Nashville annually, Bennett is happy to be teamed with Krall on their current album, and also in many television appearances this season. “Diana and I have known each other for more than 20 years now,” he reports. “We met at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and I was so impressed with her that I asked her to join my set and play piano when I sang ‘They Can’t Take That Away From Me.’ We have done a few duet recordings, but it was the right time to get into the studio and record a full album together.”

Tom Hanks, “The Polar Express” (2004) Motion-capture animation enabled Hanks to play multiple roles, including Santa, in this captivating adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s book.

Communities take on climate change in Natgeo’s ‘Paris to Pittsburgh’ Whether or not you believe climate change is real or that it’s caused by human activity, know this: There are communities across the country that believe it is and they’re taking steps to mitigate and combat its effects. And their efforts are detailed in a new National Geographic documentary debuting this week. “Paris to Pittsburgh,” which premieres Wednesday, Dec. 12, explores the very real impacts of climate change and follows the efforts of local governments, businesses and individuals in California, Iowa, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, Orlando, Fla., and Pittsburgh to make themselves resilient to the encroaching effects of climate change and also reduce their carbon emissions. The film takes its title from a speech made by President Trump last year when he announced the U.S. was exiting the Paris Climate Agreement, saying, “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.” “(When) President Trump announced the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement,” explains Sidney Beaumont, who directed the 90-minute film with Michael Bonflglio, “we saw just an absolute outpouring, just an eruption and a response from people across so

many sectors. ... It seemed like a really important opportunity to try to examine this contrasting vision we saw coming from the federal government and what people were doing on the ground and speaking up and engaged in policies and practices to try to address what people really considered a very dire threat.” The film contends that climate change isn’t something in the distant future, it’s already here, as wildfires in California, droughts and severe rain events in the Midwest and tidal flooding and disappearing beaches in Florida will attest. It also notes that the insurance industry is buying in, with a dwindling number of companies offering to insure homes on or near the water in Florida.

John Stephen Goodman was born in Affton, Mo., on June 20, 1952. After his postal-worker father’s death, his mother worked various jobs to support herself, John and his two siblings. Goodman and his wife have resided in New Orleans for many years, and they have a daughter who’s a movie production assistant. Goodman’s acting inclinations began as early as high school, though he earned a football scholarship to what now is known as Missouri State University. His classmates included actresses-to-be Kathleen Turner and Tess Harper, and he participated in the school’s drama program. His football hopes dashed by an injury, Goodman headed to New York and started landing jobs including commercials – including a famous shave-lotion ad in which he slapped his own face and said, “Thanks. I needed that.” His fame really started to rise with his performance as Pap Finn in the stage musical “Big River.” Turned down for a regular spot on “Saturday Night Live,” Goodman has hosted the show 13 times since. Before the premiere of the original “Roseanne,” he also guest-starred on such series as “The Equalizer” and “Moonlighting.” Among his pre-“Roseanne” movies are “Revenge of the Nerds,” “The Big Easy” and ‘Raising Arizona.“ Goodman began his “Roseanne” run in 1988, playing Dan Conner and winning a Golden Globe in 1993. He also continued his movie work during the show’s original tenure, appearing in such films as “Sea of Love,” “Always,” “King Ralph,” “The Babe,” “The Hudsucker Proxy,” “The Flintstones,” “Fallen” and “The Big Lebowski.” Other series Goodman has done include “Center of the Universe,” “Treme,” “Damages” and “Alpha House.” Since 1992, he has been heard in the title role in the animated holiday perennial “Frosty Returns.” After the cancellation of the “Roseanne” revival after its first season, Goodman now continues playing Dan in the ABC spinoff series “The Conners.” BY JAY BOBBIN
Jennifer Finnigan OF ‘WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS’ ON HALLMARK CHANNEL Since you’ve done holiday movies before, what was the appeal of “Welcome to Christmas” for you?
You know what? I’ve only done one other one, and that was about five years ago. It was a really great experience, and though they can be similar, they also can be quite endearing and charming. I guess you do search for elements that make them different or unique, but the director here (Gary Harvey) was someone I had worked with two times before, so I trusted him and liked him. Also, one week of shooting this was out in this ski-mountain town in the interior of British Columbia, a place I’d never been to ... and probably would never get to, if not for this movie, so I thought it would a fun little adventure for my family. We spent (daughter Ella Jack’s) first birthday in this adorable little town, and they even put up this sign that said, “Thanks, Hallmark, for giving us that Christmas spirit!”

Rivers winning in anonymity in Los Angeles
Questions: 1) This Smith rushed for over 18,000 yards over a 15-year NFL career. Name him. 2) This New York Knick blew four-straight potentially game-winning layups in a 1993 playoff game. Who is he?
At an age when most NFL quarterbacks are in broadcast booths or working on their golf game, Philip Rivers is having arguably his finest season. And few seem to be noticing. As of Week 10, the 37-year-old Rivers has led his Los Angeles Chargers to a 7-2 record, good for second place in the AFC West. He’s completed better than 67 percent of his passes for 2,459 yards and 21 touchdowns against only four interceptions, good for a quarterback rating of 115.4. For perspective, those stats put him behind only Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and New Orleans’ Drew Brees as quarterbacks in the MVP hunt. But also squarely in their shadow. It also doesn’t help his low profile that the Chargers are still new to Los Angeles and he’s playing for a relatively small fan base that has really yet to embrace the team – and that they’re playing in a soccer stadium, StubHub Center, with a 30,000seat capacity. Also not helping his case with the locals is the fact that he’s said his heart is still in the Bolts’ former home city of San Diego. But barring a major collapse, the Chargers should soon be punching their first postseason ticket since 2013 and Rivers will be a big reason why. And with that should come at least some modicum of recognition that the veteran signal caller deserves. Rivers and the Chargers will continue their playoff push Sunday, Dec. 9, against the Cincinnati Bengals in a game airing on CBS.

‘The Final Table’ chefs play to their audience make it? And that was such a huge challenge for us to figure out each episode. ... And certain chefs took it their ways and succeeded. “I remember when Graham (Campbell, his partner) and I cooked things in our wheelhouse and then we got shot down,” he continues. “Every episode was different. Because we didn’t know the judges (ahead of time), we couldn’t study up on what their likes or dislikes were and scour their Instagrams to see what they like taking pictures of. It was just more like, ‘Alright, here we go.’ ” Timothy Hollingsworth, a chef at Otium in Los Angeles, actually found it easier to cook for the people who would arguably be the toughest critics, the expert chefs. “Even though there was more pressure because you can be sent home,” he says, “it was actually easier because you knew who you were cooking for. You know, if you’re cooking for Enrique Olvera, you know who that is. If you’re cooking for Grant Achatz, you know who that is. Clare Smyth, you know who that is. And you know what their food is. If you know those chefs, you know their style and you can kind of play to that. You can operate within your own style but you know who your audience is.”

Pressure is a given in culinary competition series, but “The Final Table” throws in a psychological element for good measure. Now streaming on Netflix, the 10-episode series pits 12 teams of two chefs from around the world cooking the national dishes of Mexico, Italy, Japan, the U.S., Spain, England, Brazil, India and France. Each episode focuses on one country and a panel made up of a food critic, a celebrity food ambassador and a world-renowned chef judge the final product and send a team home. The two teams left standing then vie in the last episode to see which tandem will take their place at the eponymous final table alongside culinary greats from the above countries (who also serve as judges). In the opening episode on Mexico, the contestants were charged with making a taco. That may sound simple enough but it also led to some head-scratching as they had to figure out how to best play to that episode’s celebrity judge. “We had no clue how to cook for these celebrity judges,” says contestant Aaron Bludorn, executive chef at Café Boulud in New York City. “Were they going to expect us to be outside the box and cook to our own cuisine or were they expecting us to re-create their dish exactly how their mom used to

In this charming animated special, Dave Foley gives voice to Wayne, a member of the elite elf team that prepares for and oversees Santa’s arrival at children’s houses. He was hoping for a promotion; instead, he has to stay where he is and train an annoyingly overzealous new assistant (voice of Derek Richardson). Of course, no Christmas special would be complete without a crisis and a lesson to be learned. 8 p.m. on APL The Secret Life of the Zoo In a special holiday episode called “Christmas at Chester Zoo,” an impetuous young orangutan named Indah can’t resist the impulse to open all of the Christmas stockings the zoo staff has given her family. There’s also a cute Christmas baby over in the facility’s tapir house. Meanwhile, 10 nervous but determined zoo keepers must catch Bali, a reticulated python, so the resident vet can give the snake a health check. 9 p.m. on SYFY Nightflyers If this 10-part adaptation of an early thriller by George R.R. Martin seems to have sped by, part of the credit goes to the author’s gripping storytelling style. Also, this TV saga only started unfolding a week ago, with Syfy airing it in a Sunday-Thursday nightly pattern. In any case, this story about horrors aboard a spaceship reaches its finale tonight with “All That We Have Found,” in which new orders leave the Nightflyer and its passengers hanging.
