Relay Reflections ‌American Cancer Society Staff Partner Shanna Hayes read a poem which has become a tradition to read at the end of Relay each year at midnight. This year she read the poem in the afternoon so more people could hear it. It is called “Relay Reflections” by Kay Horton of Carroll County, Georgia. I am tired. I smell. My feet hurt. My eyes feel like grit, and my head is pounding from lack of sleep …. but I am grateful. I have all of my body parts with which I was born. I have all of my hair. I didn’t lose my breakfast in a bucket. I can hold my children. My house is a wreck. My car is full of junk. My children are exhausted, hungry

children and feed them supper. I can read them a book and rock them to sleep while filling myself up with their clean little smells and my arms with warmth. I will collapse in my bed tonight and pray for all the people we raised money for through Relay For Life. And, I will cry for all the people we were too late to help. I will give thanks for every minute of my life and for all the blessings in it. I will never ask myself why I wear myself out raising money for cancer…beAmerican Cancer Society Staff Partner Shanna Hayes cause I know why. It’s not reads a poem called “Relay for my mom, who is a cancer survivor, or for friends who Reflections.” have died from cancer, or and dirty … but I am grate- even my husband and chilful. I can clean my house dren. I do it because …… I and my car. I can bathe my CAN!
