elcome to the 2022 edition of the Best of the Parkland. We are pleased to present the results of our 6th annual Best of the Parkland survey. In this year’s magazine you will find the winners and finalists in over 120 categories chosen by you. And by you, I mean a lot of you. Over the past six years, Best of the Parkland has grown from thousands of votes to hundreds of thousand votes. This year we feature Joe and Shawna Pettus and their sons Bohdi and Asher on our cover, winners of multiple categories including Auto Dealer –New. I think you will enjoy learning more about this dynamic team and their approach to helping so many Parkland area residents find and maintain the perfect vehicle. ettus Automotive, located at 970 Woodlawn Dr. in Farmington, has earned multiple awards in this year’s Best of the Parkland Contest: Best Auto Dealer (New), Best Automotive Repair (Mechanical), and Best Oil Change. It was also a finalist in the Employer/ Place to Work category and being nominated for Philanthropic Business. This is their sixth year in a row to win the Best Auto Dealer award. There are six Pettus Automotive dealerships, with locations in Farmington, Festus, Ste. Genevieve, Fredericktown and two locations in De Soto. The automakers represented are Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. Joe Pettus is the owner of the dealerships. He purchased his first in De Soto from Talbert Ford about 10 years ago. “Our customers allowed us to grow and we’ve had multiple opportunities where we could buy other dealerships,” he said, “and we’ve really expanded in this area, which is our core area.” Pettus is from Bonne Terre and is 6 | Best of the Parkland | April 2022
a 1998 graduate of North County High School. As a student, he pursued the UniTec Career Center program for small engine repair. He’s always had a passion for cars and trucks. Working his way up through the automotive industry, Pettus earned praise and awards as a St. Louis car salesman, then became a general manager, and eventually took the opportunity to move home and open his own dealership. Pettus has worked for more than 20 years in the automotive industry. As an automotive dealer, his hard work, determination and perseverance have paid off. In addition to his six dealerships, he owns the nationally-recognized customs division, APG Customs. Clearly, working with cars has been and continues to be Pettus’ passion. He’s earned multiple awards for his dealerships. “We know the customer has a lot of choices and platforms to search for a vehicle,” he said. “We know that competitive pricing, exceptional customer care, and service after the sale are what our

customers want and deserve. “A vehicle purchase is the second-largest purchase next to buying a home,” he said. “It’s important to trust our process, as we trust our consumers are educated and supported through this important decision.” Pettus Automotive’s vast inventory and extended warranties are what set them apart, combined with exceptional service, top-trained and factory-certified technicians, and dedicated sales team and office staff. They also have the largest preowned inventory in the area, by far. All of it makes it easy for customers to return for multiple vehicle purchases from Pettus Automotive. ‘We have assembled the greatest automotive team in all departments,” Pettus said, “and that reflects in our customers’ experiences.” He said their dealerships are always looking to the future, finding ways to improve, and gaining the trust and friendship of their clients. “We strive to perfect our customer service,” said Pettus. “From the top
down, everyone knows our customers come first, with our service and sales.” The Pettus Automotive dealerships have always tried to give customers competitive pricing, which has helped the business grow to its present stature. They also hire the “right people with great attitudes.” Combined, the dealerships employ nearly 175 people. Pettus Automotive not only sells plenty of vehicles, they service them. They offer extremely reasonable oil changes in the area and don’t require appointments. Their APG Customs business in De Soto offers a variety of items including wheels, tires, lift kits and plenty of accessories. “We’ve always tried to give our customers plenty of competitively-priced choices which has helped us to grow to where we are today,” he said. “We have great customer service and great employees. We’re always looking to grow our Pettus Automotive family.” Pettus said the dealerships never want to give a customer a reason to go anywhere else. “We do everything in our power so people want to do business with us,” he said. “It’s a tough job, but we always try to do our best to turn a negative into a positive. We do our very best to take care of our customers.” John Robinson, New Car Sales Manager, said the Pettus sales staff is what makes all the difference at the dealership. “Our sales staff are all very friendly, have helpful attitudes and really concentrate on making the vehicle-buying experience a pleasant one,” said Robinson. “Our sales team members all reside in our area as well, and all of them find positive ways to contribute to our community. “That is important to the culture of our company and is important to us.” Used Car Sales Manager Mike Mills said Pettus genuinely cares about their customers and the people who work for him. “Not only do we spend an immense amount of time together during the week, he also sponsors many events that we all also attend together outside of work,” said Mills. “He is just one of the guys!” Jeff Elliott is Service Director for all of the Pettus Automotive locations. consider when deciding on a repair facility, he said there are a number of things. “First and foremost is the reputation of the facility. At Pettus Automotive, we strive to surpass expectations on every repair we perform, big or small. Our service technicians are glad to work on any problems your vehicle is experiencing… whether it’s something minor like a squeak or rattle, or a major engine repair, we strive to make every customer very happy with their vehicle’s performance,” he said. Another consideration is whether the work is covered under warranty. Elliott said, “If so, then you’ll want to go to a dealership franchise. At Pettus Automotive, all of our service technicians are highly trained and educated on every make and model and they are all ASE Certified.” Pettus’ priority is taking care of his customers and employees as well as his family, including wife Shawna, sons Bodhi and Asher, and college-aged daughter Gianna. He strongly believes in giving back. In fact, Pettus Automotive gives back a large portion of their earnings to the community through sponsorships, events and fundraisers. “This gives our employees an opportunity to serve and allows them to be proud of where they work and what we are about,” said Pettus. He said, “Our hearts are for service and that doesn’t end at the dealership. It extends into our schools, local fundraising efforts, and to our passionate charitable organizations throughout the area. If you don’t see us at the dealership, you
will feel our positive community impact in some way.” Pettus said giving back to the community has always been a huge part of his business. When his business first began, Pettus said it started small. “You build people, then people build the business,” he said. “I have such an amazing group of people standing with me in an ever-evolving business.” Over the last decade, Pettus has enjoyed giving opportunities to employees who are passionate about the automotive industry. It’s a fantastic place to lay roots and grow in their careers as automotive professionals through continued education, personal development and training. “Our hope and mission are to stay proactive and aware of the future challenges and opportunities in the automotive field, and to grow and adapt to these changes,” he said. O’Dell’s Dance Center
O
’Dell’s Dance Center did it again. They won Best Dance Studio in the Best of the Parkland awards. The studio, owned by Mandi Herzog, has won the award for several years. O’Dell’s Dance Center has been open since 1959 when Jerry O’Dell started the studio in Flat River because there were no studios in town and she wanted her daughter Geri to learn dance. The studio moved to Desloge in 1964. Geri took over the studio when she was 19, and then it was sold to Dee Wampler Courtois, whom Herzog began taking lessons from when she was 5. In 1987, Bev Holst bought the studio. Herzog became a teaching assistant at age 16 under Holst’s guidance and became a full-time teacher at age 19. In 2011, Holst sold the studio to Herzog, who opened O’Dell’s with 75 students and the motto “where every student is a star.” As the fifth owner of the studio, Herzog expanded to a larger location in Desloge with more teachers and
assistants. Nearly 200 students are enrolled in various classes including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, gymnastics, acrobatics, tumbling and music theatre. hey’re a dynamic duo. The motherand-son team of Eric and Delena Kofron have won Best Real Estate Company for Best of the Parkland for the fourth time in a row. But that’s not all. Eric won the Best Real Estate Agent award for the second time. Midwest Real Estate opened in 2014 and is owned and operated by Delena. Eric and Michael Shanks manage the business. “Every year since the day we opened, we have achieved more success, greater sales numbers, and a larger outreach to the community with events, donations and sponsorships,” said Eric. All of Midwest Real Estate’s agents work to provide exceptional customer service and professionalism. “We pride ourselves on always being educated in the constantly changing world of real estate,” said Eric. As for why the business continues to win the top real estate award for Best of the Parkland, Eric said he believes it’s because the community trusts them. “It’s important to build that trust with our clients,” he said. “We have a family vibe and we look out for each other.” Eric said they make their clients their top priority. “Sometimes deals go smooth, and sometimes they don’t. Either way it goes, we handle it in a way that is always in the best interest of our customers.” The family-owned-and-operated business tries to transfer those family values into everything they do, from the relationships the agents have with one another to the ones they have with their clients. “We have genuinely appreciated the support of the amazing people in the Mineral Area,” said Eric. “It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind, but

Midwest Real Estate enjoys working with people, negotiating deals and getting to closings, but they’re more focused on making connections and getting customers the best possible deals. When Eric joined the real estate industry, everything changed for him. He saw the potential in the profession, so he went from working part-time to full-time. Delena said the goal is for her agents to “be like a knowledgeable friend coming along on house tours, a friend that’s going to provide insights but also give honest concerns if they present themselves.” She said, “ It’s really easy to get someone to write contracts they really
don’t like if you want them to, but we don’t roll that way.” She said whether a customer is purchasing a $75,000 house or a $500,000 home, they will be treated the same. “We work just as hard for you,” she said. “That’s where I pride myself. We just work very hard to do a good job and treat people right.” When customers find the right house, commercial building or property, agents at Midwest Real Estate help their customers to get the best deal and do everything to make it a smooth process. “This is a job I get gratification from, it’s not thankless work,” he said. “When you do an awesome job for somebody, especially a first-time buyer, and you get to closing, they’re so excited, their hands are shaking. “You get to hand them their keys and a little closing gift, you get to take that picture with them. They’re stoked, and it’s hard not to get that way, too.”

izza 101 South is the winner of two Best of the Parkland awards: Best Pizza and Finalist for Salad. This is the business’s third consecutive year for winning Best Pizza. The business is located in world-famous Bonne Terre. It is housed in a building that is more than 130 years old and was formerly occupied by Polites Tavern and Rugs Bar and Grill. After the building was remodeled, Pizza 101 South opened in December 2019 by Dustin Gerstenschlager. Paige Prasuhn and Cody Helm manage the restaurant. Customers enjoy pizza, pasta, salads and more at Pizza 101 South. The brand-new options are espressos and cappuccinos. As for pizza, they can order specialty pies or build-their-own tasty creations. “Absolutely hands down, we have the best pizza around,” said Gerstenschlager. “Our food sells itself.” Currently, the top-selling items at Pizza 101 South include the world-famous garlic cheese bread; the Total Package, a supreme pizza; and the Carnivore, a meat lover’s pizza. Gerstenschlager said the quality of the restaurant’s food is the most important thing. Their dough, sauces and toppings are prepared fresh daily and made in-house with their own recipes. “No ingredient comes through the door without me personally tasting it,” he said. He added that their wood-fired oven, combined with fresh ingredients and an outstanding staff with excellent customer service, are what sets them apart from their competition. “You can build your own pizza, pasta, wings and salads,” he said. “If you can dream it up from any combination of our list of toppings and sauces, we can make it for you.”

The business, owned by Janet Phegley and Josh Harris, opened in 1996. The two became partners in 2008. What started as a sporting goods store with fishing and hunting gear has evolved into a large powersports dealer over time. Midwest Sports Center has been located in the same shop for 26 years. That is likely one reason Schlosser Orthodontics earned the Best Orthodontist award for Best of the Parkland. Dr. Collin Schlosser decided to return home to the Parkland with his wife and family after an almost 10-year journey that culminated in a specialty certificate in orthodontics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Following four months of renovating a local building at the corner of Maple and Potosi Streets in Farmington, Schlosser Orthodontics opened in April 2021. Support from the community was better than Schlosser could have anticipated throughout his first year. In fact, his practice went into hyperdrive with the acquisition of Dr. Rodney Rhodes’ orthodontic office in December.
Dr. Schlosser and his staff prioritizes treating each patient with the individualized care they deserve and strive to offer technologies and treatment modalities which suit their case the best.
“There were, of course, some growing pains with the transition,” he said, “but I have been truly fortunate to have found some incredibly talented team members to continue serving the community with.” As an orthodontic specialist, Schlosser’s focus is to utilize traditional braces or modern techniques such as Invisalign to create healthy, esthetic smiles and provide a comfortable, functional bite. “Misaligned teeth can create difficulties in regard to cleaning the teeth and can cause abnormal wear to the tooth enamel over time,” he said.
He said his staff prioritizes treating each patient with the individualized care they deserve and strive to offer technologies and treatment modalities which suit their case the best. Parkland Monument Co., Inc.

arkland Monument, located at 5425 Highway 32 in Farmington, won the Best of the Parkland award for Best Monument Company for the second year in a row. Jeff Owens and his family purchased Parkview Monument in 1997, which was located on Weber Road at the time. The business had been a functioning monument company since 1927. In 2003, the family purchased their second – and current – location where they eventually moved all production. According to Owens, he believes that Parkland Monument Co. is the only monument company that engraves, etches and produces their own monuments in-house. “I do all the designing right here for the customer,” he said. “We install the monuments ourselves and take on the project from start to finish.” He said the business provides personalized service and knowledge which has been acquired through experience over the years.
“The fact that we have the ability to do everything ourselves provides the customer with complete flexibility of how we can design and produce their memorial,” he said. Owens said any salesperson can sell a monument out of a catalog, but he can fully design and customize a memorial stone at Parkland Monument Co., Inc. “Part of my job is to suggest things and inform our customers of what their options are,” he said. “I am a good informationalist because I present the information so customers can make educated decisions, that also factor in their budget, etc.” According to Owens, memorialization is Parkland Monument Co.’s primary business. Products also include yard stones, granite benches, memorial pavers and more. In fact, the business has completed several paver projects throughout the area. “Our attention to detail, knowledge and experience we provide our customers is superb,” said Owens. “The fact that we can control every aspect of the

The business, located at 6326 Hillsboro Road in Bonne Terre, was chosen Best CBD/Vape Shop in 2021. The Shed Vapes is a wholesale vapor shop that started in owner Stan Janis’ kitchen in 2018 before moving to a small building on his property. Janis and co-owner Jordan Wood now operate the business out of a 12-foot-by-34-foot shed, which is where the business’ name comes from. The pair sell vapor products to help people quit smoking. Since the shop opened, the staff have helped more than 5,000 people kick their smoking habits. “Our mission is to help people quit smoking and chewing tobacco at an affordable price,” said Janis. “We are wholesale to the public, which is about half the cost of a retail vape shop, and we only sell quality products.” The Shed Vapes sells their products for little to no profit, which allows people to have an inexpensive option to help them quit smoking. Since the shop opened, they have grown to carry more than 200 brands and flavors of e-juice and the latest in vaping equipment. While the vapor shop is smaller than most area shops, Janis said they carry more products and varieties than others.

his organization started because of a group of people who saw a need for hospice in the Parkland and wanted to serve that need with compassion and dignity. Serenity HospiceCare is this year’s Best of the Parkland award recipient for Best Hospice Company. The business, located at 5272 Flat River Road in Park Hills, is an independent, non-for-profit faith-based organization overseen by a local board. It was established in 1989 and is the area’s oldest hospice. The organization began providing quality endof-life care three decades ago when hospice wasn’t as common or as widely accepted as it is today. “End-of-life care is about living your best life with the time you have left, whether someone has two weeks, six months or longer to live,” said Executive Director Gayla Sisk. “Choosing hospice sooner means more comfort and support during life’s toughest time.” Serenity HospiceCare’s comprehensive team of medical, spiritual and emotional support staff provides all
the necessary care for their patients to remain at home in the presence of their family and friends. Rich and Crystal Figge first worked at Rich’s parents’ produce business in Festus before starting their own business. Crystal & Rich’s Produce started in 2013 with two fold-up tents and two fold-up tables set up next to Casey’s near their current location. They were seasonal, only open from March until October, for their first eight years in business. Now the couple has expanded to a year-round business that specializes in fresh, homegrown produce. Rich said their line of products has drastically increased from when they were first in business. They now offer fruits and vegetables, seasonal items, specialty items like chocolate-covered strawberries, seasonal plants and flowers, Christmas trees, grave blankets, and more.
Some popular items are the freshly cut fruit and veggie platters and dips. The first Peace of Mind business opened in Sullivan in 2015 by Scott Micke, followed by the shop in Park Hills in 2017. The specialty boutique is family-owned and offers a wide variety of items: clothing, jewelry, home décor, posters, medical smoking devices, medical cards for cannabis smokers, and much more. ne thing that makes Casey Hartley smile is when someone sees a photograph of hers and instantly realizes it’s her work. Hartley started KC Photography 12 years ago out of necessity when a friend needed someone to shoot her wedding. Then other friends asked her to do the same for them. “My late mother fancied herself a photographer so I decided to dive more into it,” said Hartley. “Turns out God was simply handing me a big gift!” Hartley specializes in weddings, seniors and headshots. Most recently, she earned Best Photographer in the Best of the Parkland awards, a title she has won multiple years. “Hands down, I’ve been blessed by getting hired by the most wonderfully

Old Village Mercantile
C
aledonia’s old-fashioned general store serves up 600 varieties of candy, Amish fudge, handcrafted ice cream, coffee and antiques. The Old Village Mercantile is the winner of three Best of the Parkland awards: Best Ice Cream, Best Antique Store and Specialty Shop in Washington County. Owners Nina and Steve Gilliam have owned the mercantile for 20 years. It is an authentic 1909 general store and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “The general stores in the past were always at the center of their community,” said Nina. “We have really made that our mission, to be integrated within our community.” After two decades, the couple are now starting to see generations of smiles at the mercantile. “We now have generations of customers coming in,” said Nina. “They came as babies and now they’re bringing their own babies. It’s been amazing to see all of our wonderful and loyal customers over the years.” Customers visit the Old Village Mercantile from local and far-away places. So far, customers from all 50 states and 29 different countries have visited the mercantile in a tiny town with only 130 residents. Whether they’re new or returning customers, they all enjoy their unique experience at the mercantile, from admiring the beautifully restored historic building to the wide variety of antiques and sweet treats. But perhaps the biggest attraction is the premium handmade artisan ice cream, made fresh onsite by retired teacher Randy Huff. He often uses homemade baked goods and candy from the store to create his unique flavors. Gilliam’s husband is the antique curator for the store. Antiques fill the second floor of the building while sweet treats and gift items will the lower floor. “Customers are welcomed into our store by our amazing staff,” said Nina. “We have excellent customer service, and we offer a variety of delicious and unique products and antiques. Visiting the Old Village Mercantile is more than a shopping trip. It’s an experience.”

hey take pride in helping their customers come up with a solution to conquer pests, and that’s one reason why Parkland Pest has won the Best of the Parkland award for Best Pest Control. The business was initially opened by Jeff Barnes in 2007. Current owners Mandy and Jason Denby acquired the business in 2019. The business, located at 1007 Ste. Genevieve Avenue in Farmington, offers various pest services including bed bug, mosquito, roaches, and other general pests such as spiders, ants and more. She said the company takes pride in offering solutions for customers’ home or business. “Pests are not a one-and-done treatment and there’s a science behind the treatments.,” she said. “They generally require a plan to control an infestation, but our goal is to get ahead of the game and treat before there’s a major problem.” Mandy said another priority for Parkland Pest is their excellent
customer service. “We truly listen to the concerns and needs of our customers and come up with a reasonable plan of action and ensure the customer is satisfied,” she said. Parkland Pest receives many calls from satisfied customers who are full of excitement and appreciation of the treatment they have received. “I took a call this morning from a bed bug treatment we did yesterday,” said Mandy. “The lady was singing our praises because she and her children actually slept last night without itching.” That’s just one example of how Parkland Pest genuinely cares about their customers and their pest-related situations.

It’s also evidence of why Plummer’s is the recipient of the Best of the Parkland award for Home Improvement Store. Plummer’s Ace Hardware has been open for 53 years. The business has been in the family since 1969. Son Scott took over ownership and operation of the business from his parents Jim and Delores Plummer in 1987. He currently manages the business with Larry Adams. Over the years, the store has served generations of local residents with its large inventory of quality products, excellent customer service and convenience of being open seven days a week. In 2016, the family business became an Ace Hardware Store and doubled

They sell fun items, too, like Weber and Traeger grills and Blackstone griddles. “We have a really good selection and a lot of items the big-box stores don’t have,” said Scott. “We have a lot of
