DEMOCRAT NEWS
Welcome to the 2016 Azalea Festival I would like to warmly welcome you to the 2016 Azalea Festival, a tradition that gave me the opportunity to represent my incredible community. I am sincerely thankful for the experience and for the people who have supported me in making this possible. I hope everyone has a lovely and safe weekend, and, most of all, I wish this year’s queen candidates the best of luck! Have fun!
Haley Holliday, 2015 Azalea Queen
Extra, extra, Calling all super heroes! PROVIDED BY TARA HALE
What really makes a superhero? Is it the costume, the ability to fly, run fast, or lift a car over his or her head? No! It is the hero’s inner qualities such as bravery, compassion, and desire to make the world a better place. Superheroes are all around us every day. Superheroes display courage, compassion, selflessness, and humility. We were recently on the lookout for our local hometown super hero. Fredericktown is filled with so many wonderful and selfless people. After submissions by local citizens a local super Mom was chosen! Here is the article that was submitted in her honor: 2015 Azalea Queen Haley Holiday

Have you ever had someone in your life that literally risked their life for you; someone that loved you so much that they neglected their own life for your existence. Some one that was told not to get pregnant because their cancer might come back and it could mean her death. Someone that had never met you, but knew you were their world, well let me tell you, I have had a person like that in my life since the day I was born. I have the privilege of calling her Mom! She was 32 years old when she had to face the horrible truth that she had breast cancer four weeks before her wedding to my father. She had never had any children because of the past abusive situation and relationship she was in and wanted more than anything to have a child and now she was faced with the decision after a double mastectomy, to have her tubes tied or take the chance of the cancer returning in the other breast. She chose the latter.
She was not giving up on her dream of becoming a mom. By God’s grace she gave birth to a healthy baby boy on May 9th, 1983, one year after her marriage to my father. I was very blessed, that baby boy was me. After my birth she did have that surgery as she had promised her doctor she would. I would be her only child. My mother has had 25 surgeries and still goes through much pain, but she never complains. She worked as a public school teacher for 33 1/2 years. She now teaches computer classes at Mineral Area College and loves every day of it. During her lifetime she has always put others before herself. She saved the life of a twelve year old girl at the Fredericktown pool in the early 70’s, has been a mentor for many young children and teenagers through the years. She is a true friend and will never let you down. She is the best grandma ever and a great wife. Every year at Christmas she finds a needy family that we get gifts for so that they can have a better Christmas. If there are stray animals around she is always rescuing them. She has always stood by me through my PTSD when I just couldn’t do it alone. She also served 12 years on the Relay for Life committee. I have been a momma’s boy since day one and I will continue to be the rest of my life. She is my mother, my best friend and my Super Hero. She doesn’t have a cape, but she is brave and courageous, and is basically fearless. Some people only get to meet their hero once, but I get to see mine every day. I love my Super Hero, my mom, Connie Hall! This is Connie Hall’s story of heroism. Connie will be our 2016 parade grand marshal and receive $100 to the charity of her choice. She will be accompanied by her son and the Heroes for Kids group.

Granpa Cratchet Stage Show ‘Super Veg Man of the Universe’ returns PROVIDED BY SAM BOWMAN
Returning to the Azalea Festival this year is an award winning show that has been seen all around the country at fairs, festivals and events. It’s Granpa Cratchet in his big show, “Super Veg Man of the Universe.” Look for the show at the carnival grounds this weekend. Granpa’s show is fast paced slapstick comedy that will leave the whole family in stitches. Who says a puppet show is just for kids? Only about a third of the audience at Granpa’s shows are youngsters. You’ll see moms and dads, lots of Grandma’s and Grandpa’s and even some teenagers too. Everybody loves Granpa’s off the wall, high-energy action. You never know what he’ll say or do next. In this show Cousin Clem helps Granpa invent a fantastic machine that blends ingredients into a super veggie drink that will turn anyone into a super hero. You’ll hear the kids a mile away as they help Granpa catch Wally the Squirrel before he gets the juice. Then they help Clem get the right ingredients into the machine, but, as usual, Granpa gets carried away and ends up in the machine himself. You won’t PROVIDED BY SAM BOWMAN want to miss what happens when he gets processed right through The Granpa Cratchet Stage Show “Super Veg Man of the Universe” is coming to the 2016 Azalea Festival. all those cogs and gears.
