Mount Vernon has moved forward with a Community Block Development Grant for the uptown business district with Eastern Central Iowa Council of Governments help. Tom Gruis with ECICOG explained that businesses participating in the block grant will contribute roughly $307,000 of the funding for the project, while the City of Mount Vernon will contribute $260,000 towards the project. The rest of the funding for the roughly $1.189 million project will come from the grant provided by the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Grant applications are due on Aug. 17. At the July 20 council meeting, the city approved a resolution designating a slum or blighted area to apply for the grant. Council member Scott Rose said that when people hear slum or blighted area, it can be shocking. “We’re not calling our uptown a slum, it’s just the terms required to apply for this particular grant to help with work to business facades,” Rose said. The council then approved the City of Mount Vernon’s $260,000 contribution. “It’s more money than I anticipated the city spending for a project, but it’s very important that this project goes through,” said council member Mike Andreasen. “I was concerned we’d be spending too much money on uptown and not focused on other business districts, but we can still do work on both districts. This is a perfect project for Mount Vernon and the businesses contributing to it.” City administrator Chris Nosbisch explained that by participating in this grant process, Mount Vernon could qualify for grants that would help in the city’s upcoming streetscape project. “That alone is worth the $260,000 investment in this project for me,” Nosbisch said, as the grant for the streetscape could greatly benefit that future project. The estimated cost of the streetscape project is $4.5 million to $6 million. The façade project does need to be completed before the streetscape can receive a grant. Council member Scott Rose asked if this project was purely cosmetic work on facades, or if other issues were found would those be addressed. Gruis said while it focuses on facades, if there are structural issues that are found and need to be

The focus for all three coaches was to help students be better in fundamental skills than they were when they started for the day. Myles explained that the thing that gets him fired up is having youth excited and ready to learn by echoing their enthusiasm. Coons explained that the things under everyone’s control are their attitude and actions. “If you come in with an enthusiastic attitude, that carries,” Coons said. “If you come in here gloomy because it’s a gloomy day, that carries as well.”
