Looking back on the 2025-26 school year The University of Iowa recognized and celebrated a variety of milestones during the last year.

From new restaurants downtown and packed football weekends, to March Madness excitement and unforgettable performances, the 2025-26 school year gave University of Iowa students plenty to remember. Iowa City continued to grow alongside the UI, with new businesses, community spaces, and traditions shaping student life.

Legendary musician Bob Dylan performed in Hancher Auditorium in March 2026 as part of his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour. The concert brought students, longtime fans, and community members together for a rare chance to see a music icon locally.

New wave of downtown businesses

Hawkeye Football’s NFL pipeline

Iowa City welcomed multiple businesses downtown this year, including Le Crave cafe, Luna’s Tacos, and Claude, a French-inspired cocktail lounge. Two additional bars opened as well: Fieldhouse Bar and Grill and The Union.

As businesses continue to open downtown, they help to shape the atmosphere of downtown Iowa City for students at the University of Iowa.

The Iowa football team finished its season 9-4, beating Vanderbilt at the ReliaQuest Bowl. The team set a program record with 7 players drafted into the NFL draft, extending one of the longest draft streaks in the country.

Men’s Basketball’s surprising March Madness run The Iowa Men’s Basketball Team appeared in the Big Ten tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987. As the 9th seed, Iowa became the lowest seed in the BIG Ten to advance to the Elite Eight.

Chick-fil-a pop-up As part of a partnership between Chick-fil-A and the Iowa Memorial Union, the Coralville Chick-fil-A opened a temporary dining location. The addition is part of a broader effort to rotate and expand dining options for students on campus.

The store serves regular and spicy chicken sandwiches, waffle potato chips, chocolate chunk cookies, and bottled drinks.

UI continues advancement of 10-year master plan The plan includes modernization efforts across campus, including updates to the Iowa Memorial Union, residence halls, and the medical campus.

Four years into its 10-year Master Plan, the University of Iowa has continued to make progress across campus through grand openings, construction, renovations, and closures, advancing the university’s goal of modernizing and improving campus.

The Iowa Memorial Union, or IMU, began phase one of its renovations in 2025. The cost of the renovations will total $81.4 million, with around $75 million coming from student fees.

Part of the project was the demolition of the Iowa House Hotel, previously located on the fourth floor of the IMU. The third floor will also be updated to accommodate Student Health, which will relocate from Westlawn once the renovations are complete.

After the Board of Regents’ approval for the renovations, The Daily Iowan interviewed Rod Lehnertz, the senior vice president for Finance and Operations and the university architect, he said the maintenance and renovations the IMU is undergoing is to ensure the building’s structural longevity.

“We want to make sure the building stands the test of time for our students as an epicenter for the students on campus, and we are very excited about the project,” Lehnertz said.

Union Station Dining, located on the lower level of the Iowa Memorial Union, was also closed during renovations in March 2026.

In the same month, the UI partnered with the Coral Ridge Mall Chick-fil-A to open a pop-up restaurant to replace Union Station until phase two of the renovation wraps up — expected in August 2027.

After phase two is complete, the plan is for the IMU to open two national-brand fast-food restaurants as dining options for students, but the two restaurants have not been announced.

During the early phases of the renovations, the DI interviewed Bill Nelson, associate dean and executive director of the IMU, Nelson said he is excited for the future of the IMU. “I can’t even tell you how thrilled I am about the possibilities for this building,” Nelson said.

The university opened the doors to its Health Sciences Academic Building in November 2025.

The new six-story building, located on the west side of campus behind Slater Residence Hall, cost $249 million to build.

Construction started on the building in July 2022. The new facility houses the Communication Sciences and Disorders, Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Services, Health and Human Physiology departments.

This year saw the start of renovations to Quad Green, the space between the College of Pharmacy building and Hillcrest Residence Hall, which will create a new recreational space near the west-side dorms.

The new additions will include a pavilion with outdoor furnishings, two pickleball courts, a basketball court, and new sidewalks. Renovations are expected to conclude in October 2026.

Renovations continued on the old Art Building, with the space set to reopen in fall 2026. The renovations have cost the university $37 million. Floods in 2008 damaged the building beyond use, leaving it abandoned.

However, the university is now looking to make it the home to multiple departments. The Graduate College, College of Education’s Art Education Space, School of Planning and Public Affairs, and Department of Religious Studies will be moved into the renovated space.

Who leads the UI?

Hawkeyes have various leaders ensuring the university’s operations run smoothly.

President Barbara Wilson This year marks Barbara Wilson’s fifth in the position of university president. Originally from Appleton, Wisconsin, Wilson is an alum of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s and Ph.D. in communication arts. Wilson continues to focus her efforts on bringing in diverse students.

Executive Vice President and Provost Kevin Kregel Kregel has been the university’s vice president and provost since 2021. Kregel has served on several committees for the University of Iowa including the presidential search and strategic planning committees. He attended the UI and received both his bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in physiology and biophysics.

Vice President for Student Life Sarah Hansen Hansen has been the vice president of Division of Student Life since 2020. She oversees student engagment and involvement, student organizations, and every other aspect of students’ life on campus.

President and CEO for the UI Center for Advancement Sheila Baldwin Baldwin oversees the UI’s efforts to get ahead through philanthropy and engagement. The Center for Advancement brings together the UI Foundation and the UI Alumni Association. Baldwin has been with the UI since 1999 and was appointed to the position in May 2026.

Senior Vice President for Finance and Operations and University Architect Rod Lehnertz Lehnertz has served as the Vice President for Finance and Operations since 2014. His duties entail looking over the university’s finances and improvement projects. Before his current role, Lehnertz was the director of planning, design and construction in Facilities Management. Lehnertz is an Iowa native and has been with the UI since 1994.

UIHC CEO Bradley Haws In November 2024, Haws was named the University of Iowa Health Care CEO. Haws follows the departure of Suresh Gunasekaran in 2022 and Interim UIHC CEO Kimberly Hunter.

Prior to his position as CEO, Haws was the CFO and associate vice president of UIHC from 2018-21. Haws has over 30 years of experience working in health care leadership.

Meet the Iowa state Board of Regents The state Board of Regents govern Iowa’s three public universities and Iowa’s two special schools. The regents’ decisions impact students, faculty, and staff at the UI. The Board of Regents is typically made up of eight to nine members and is appointed by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Regents must be approved by two-thirds of the Iowa Senate before they take their positions.

Regents’ terms last six years, but the student regent that is elected to the board serves until their time at their university concludes.

The board oversees public Iowa institutions, including the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa School for the Deaf, and Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The regents set university tuition and housing rates, approve construction and projects on university properties, hire university presidents, and declare states of emergency, such as when they moved all classes to be virtual at the beginning of the pandemic.

Robert Cramer was appointed as the president for the Board of Regents in 2025 succeeding David Barker who now serves as the Assistant Secretary for the Department of Education. Kurt Tjaden was appointed at president pro tem in December 2025.

The current student Steve regent is Lucy Gipple, Lacy who is an undergraduate student at the University of Northern Iowa.

The regents have had a student on the board since 1973 when former UI law student Steve Zumbach was appointed. Crow was appointed on February 6, 2025, and her term expires on April 30, 2027.

Finding a safe space on campus The University of Iowa has dozens of LGBTQ+ student orgs, resources to support LGBTQ+ students.

Finding a community to fit into can be difficult, but at the University of Iowa, there are resources for all students. With a robust LGBTQ+ community and culture at the UI come dozens of LGBTQ+ student orgs and resources to help support LGBTQ+ students.

Organizations in Johnson County are available for individuals seeking support or immediate help including the Women’s Resource and Action Center and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

Sexual misconduct can include instances such as sexual assault, sexual harassment, and domestic violence. University of Iowa students can also volunteer and participate in events at the following organizations.

Women’s Resource and Action Center The Women’s Resource and Action Center, known as WRAC, is a feminist organization at the UI that works to create more equity for individuals of all identities.

WRAC is located across from the major Eastside dorms at the Bowman House on 230 N. Clinton St. WRAC also hosts a take Back the Night Rally every year, which is a

nationwide movement that stands against sexual violence, according to WRAC.

Domestic Violence Intervention Program The Domestic Violence Intervention Program, known as DVIP, provides confidential services and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and human trafficking. DVIP serves several surrounding counties to Johnson County, where the UI is located. The program was opened first as a shelter that offered counseling and a 24-hour crisis line in 1980. It is located at 1105 S. Gilbert Court in Iowa City.

The University of Iowa has hundreds of student organizations where you can find a community dedicated to just about anything: the UI has almost a dozen LGBTQ+ student organizations including some of the first LGBTQ+ sororities.

For LGBTQ+ Students interested in Greek life the University of Iowa has a LGBTQ+ fraternity and sorority on campus.

The Gamma Gamma chapter of Delta Lambda Phi Fraternity, the only progressive and LGBTQ+ inclusive fraternity at the UI, was founded in 2015 and is located at 125 North Madison Street. Gamma Rho Lambda is an all-inclusive social sorority at the UI. Other student organizations include the Queer Liberation Front, which aims to advocate for queer students; The OutLaws, which promotes the interests of LGBTQ+ law students; Double Rainbow: QTPOC, aims to prompt discussion about intersectionality and advocate for intersectional students.

“Home away from home:” UI Pride House The UI’s Pride House, located at 601 Melrose Avenue, is a “home away from home” for

LGBTQ+ students to be supported by their peers and provide a safe space for anyone who needs it.

The pride house has become a staple in the UI community with its famous red door. The center was started in 2005 after members of the the Executive Board of the UI Gay, Lesbian, Transgender & Allied Union (GLBTAU) met with UI administrators to secure the cultural house and it opened its doors in the fall of 2006.

The Pride House is equipped with a comfortable living room dining area, kitchen, study rooms, printer, board games, a Nintendo Switch, and streaming services.

The center is open to students and community members from noon to 9 p.m. Monday — Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays.

Campus/ Iowa City Resources for LGBTQ+ Students LGBTQ+ students can find a plethora of resources aimed at helping make their campus life more manageable.

LGBTQ+ UI students can visit Student Legal Services for assistance in modifying their birth certificates, changing their names, or helping students who feel discriminated against.

Iowa City residents can also ask for some support when visiting the doctor, the Division of Student Life offers Queer Health Advocates — which are trained volunteers who help advocate for LGBTQ+ patients and their medical needs – to accompany residents to their doctor’s appointments.

Additionally, In MyUI, students can change their preferred pronouns, name, sex, and gender.

To change these visit the “Student Information” tab on MyUI and select “Name/Pronouns.”

Resources and organizations for students with disabilities SDS along with other UI services provides resources and community for students with disabilities.

The University of Iowa Student Disability Services is located at 141 University Capitol Centre.

Student Disability Services, or SDS, provides students with community and campus resources, including advocacy and awareness, tutoring, accessibility tools, etc.

SDS’ mission is to welcome, encourage, and empower students and serve the |UI’s community.

Its vision includes welcoming students as valuable contributors to the diversity of the UI community. SDS provides support for students and faculty to ensure necessary accommodations are provided for classes or exams.

The student organization UI Students for Advocacy and Awareness is for individuals on campus who have disabilities and their allies. The organization provides opportunities to gather knowledge about disabilities and develop leadership and advocacy skills.

The organization creates tangible changes surrounding disability-related issues.

UI Students for Advocacy and Awareness aims to provide a community for students with all kinds of health conditions: Chronic illnesses, mental health disorders, neuropsychiatric conditions such as autism, conditions such as blindness/deafness, or anything else.

Best Buddies is also a student organization supporting students with disabilities.

The UI’s chapter of Best Buddies works to eliminate discrimination toward people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities by connecting them with UI students to create friendships.

Events are scheduled regularly throughout the year and provide the opportunity to meet and spend time with buddies regularly.

The UI provides many organizations and resources to students with disabilities and their peers for a welcoming and inclusive environment and community.

Resources for first-generation Hawkeyes Individuals attending the University of Iowa as first-generation student — who make up about one in five students at the UI — can use campus resources to navigate the college experience.

The 1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network provides a space for first-gen students to ask questions and make connections with faculty, staff, and student leaders.

Faculty and staff volunteer to be part of the network and first-gen students who want to connect with someone in a specific department can find their information on the first-gen website.

University Housing offers a first-generation Living Learning Community for students who don’t have parents or guardians who completed a four-year degree. The LLC puts students on a residence floor with other first-generation students. This community can be a great way for students to make connections with peers, faculty, and staff.

The 1stGen@Iowa Iowa Student Advisory Board provides student input to the UI First-Generation Task Force and works to inform and educate the campus community by developing strategies to better support first-gen students at the UI. The First Gen Hawks program is desi-

gned to equip first-gen students with the tools, resources, and support that will help students reach their goals at the UI and post-graduation. The program provides 200 new students the opportunity to make connections with faculty and staff, meet new people, and find a community on campus. Students participate in one of three learning track areas: on-campus employment, undergraduate research, or leadership & engagement. Each area has a seminar class in the fall and spring semesters that explores tracks and tips for success.

TRIO Student Support Services also helps students at the UI who are first-generation, low-income, or have a disability. This is a federally funded program that can help navigate important college-related tasks including filing for FAFSA, applying to postgraduate and professional programs, and finding additional sources for financial aid and scholarships.

The Undergraduate Student Government has an elected First-Generation Constituency Senator who serves in the student senate.

First-gen students can reach out to this student representative with questions or to voice concerns that the student government can address.

Diversity at Iowa: Resources Keeping Hawkeyes healthy for underrepresented students The cultural houses on campus and other programs offer services to underrepresented Hawkeyes to enhance their college experience.

Cultural centers accross capus The University of Iowa has four cultural centers on campus through the university’s Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement organization, including the Afro-American Cultural Center, the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center, the Latino Native American Cultural Center, and the Pride Alliance Center.

The Afro-American Cultural Center, known as the Afro House, was founded in 1968 to establish a space for Black students from different cultural backgrounds. The center is open for all students to share their cultural knowledge.

Established in 2003, the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center creates a space for Asian American and Pacific Islanders at the UI to interact with other minority students and enhance their experience at the UI. The Latino Native American Cultural Center was founded as a friendship house formed by students. The center has housed many students and their organizations which sponsor conferences, study groups, rallies, and more.

The Pride Alliance Center, known as the Pride House, opened in 2006 as a venue for students, student organizations, and community members. It has a living room, fully equipped kitchen,

and study rooms. The Pride House offers the QT Closet, which provides free gender-affirming clothing for UI students and Iowa City community members.

These centers are open to any student on campus and are places to hang out, study, host events, meet other people, and attend educational events.

TRIO Student Support Services and Upward Bound TRIO Student Support Services works with students at the UI who are first-generation college students who demonstrate financial need or are low-income and have a verified disability.

The program supports them through graduation and helps those involved maintain strong connections to campus and Iowa City resources. The program has been federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education since 1977.

Another federally funded program, the Upward Bound Project, guides first-generation and low-income high school students from the area around the UI as they prepare for postsecondary education opportunities.

Upward Bound began in 1964 and has been part of the UI since 1966. The benefits, according to the UI website, include aca-

demic counseling, two ACT test fee waivers, four SAT test fee waivers, FAFSA assistance, and summer enrichment opportunities.

LGBTQ+ resources for UI stdents The UI offers resources for LGBTQ+ students with a list included on the Undergraduate Student Government website. There are campus-based resources listed like the Name Change Fund, but also city-based, state-based, and nationbased resources.

There is a map students can access that shows all of the single-use and gender-inclusive restrooms on campus.

University of Iowa Housing and Dining also offers gender-inclusive on-campus living options for students.

In MyUI, students can edit and change their preferred names, pronouns, sex, and gender at any time.

To make the modification, select the “Student Information” tab on the portal and then choose the “Name/ Pronouns” tile.

While the Iowa Board of Regents has recently moved to remove all diversity, equity, and inclusion practices at state universities, other campus resources for students from underrepresented backgrounds include the Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement in the Division of Student Life.

Student Health and University Counseling Services give students access to physical and mental health services.

On Campus Health Services The University of Iowa offers students physical and mental health services. Students can make an appointment with Student Health, which is on the west side of campus if they want to see a licensed doctor or nurse.

If students need assistance with their mental health the UI has an on-campus mental health counseling service. Student Health and University Counseling Services are covered by tuition, so there are no additional costs for making an appointment.

How to make an appointment Student Health: The Westlawn office is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students can call

the Student Health appointment line and schedule a time to come in.

University Counseling Service: UCS has several locations across campus.

The UI offers many different study locations, both on and off campus. When looking for a good place to study on campus, there are a few things to take into consideration.

Each residence hall comes equipped with different study rooms and multipurpose rooms, lounges, etc., but it is fun to explore campus and find other locations just outside your dorm to complete schoolwork.

Quiet study locations

Ordering course materials is one of the main tasks for all students to complete before the first day of classes at the University of Iowa in August.

While all textbooks are ordered to buy or rent through the Iowa Hawk Shop and University Bookstore, students have several Iowa City retailers to choose from. It is recommended that students have materials before the official first day of the fall semester.

The Iowa Hawk Shop, located on the ground floor of the Iowa Memorial Union on campus, is the university’s official place to buy textbooks. The Follet Higher Education Group operates the store, and UI student employees work to help run the store. Students can order their textbooks and pick them up at the IMU before classes begin. To get a list of required materials for a course, students can enter their HawkID number through a search on the Hawk Shop’s website. A complete list will appear for students’ enrolled courses. The UI Hawk Shop also has UI apparel for Hawkeye fans to buy.

Iowa Book, located on 8 S. Clinton

St. in Iowa City’s Downtown District, is another resource where some students can buy or rent their course materials.

Like the Hawk Shop, students can enter UI course numbers to find the correct textbook for a class. Barnes and Noble College entered a new partnership with Iowa Book on Aug. 9, 2021. Students can also sell back textbooks at the end of a semester and get 50 percent cashback, according to Iowa Book’s website.

Prairie Lights, located on 15 S. Dubuque Street in downtown Iowa City, was opened in 1978 and provides some select textbooks for students. Some professors prefer supporting locally owned businesses and list their course materials at Prairie Lights. The store offers new and used textbooks and provides delivery or in-store pick-up.

The UI Office of the Registrar also has a page of resources where students can buy textbooks and course materials on campus. UI instructors also list their course materials on a course syllabus or ICON portal site. On your ICON account, access courses by clicking “Courses” on the left side of the screen. The course materials list is commonly listed in the “Modules” or “Files” section of the site. If course materials are not in a class, the course ICON site should list “No Textbook

Reviving Hawkeye hoops New men’s basketball coach Ben McCollum leads the team to the Elite Eight.

Ben McCollum grew up idolizing Iowa men’s basketball. Former Hawkeyes B.J. Armstrong, Acie Earl, Wade Lookingbill, and Chris Street were his heroes. The team’s youth camps were the highlights of his summers in Storm Lake, Iowa.

A young McCollum and former head coach Dr. Tom Davis have a photo together, and decades later, the duo exist in the frame of program history: the last two coaches to lead the Hawkeyes to the Sweet 16 and win.

Indeed, Iowa hadn’t reached the Elite Eight since 1987, Davis’ first season with the Hawkeyes. McCollum accomplished the same feat and aims to do more. There’s a new men’s hoops chapter in Iowa City. After just four NCAA Tournament wins over the last 24 seasons, McCollum’s squad earned three in one season. Now, the coach’s grand introduction aims for longevity.

Donning his typical button-down white collar shirt and gold tie, McCollum wears emotion on his sleeve. Whether

it’s crouching on one knee near the scorer’s table or hopping on both feet down the sideline, the coach won’t hesitate to react to what he sees.

A missed defensive assignment will usually draw more consternation than a missed call from the referee. McCollum’s team didn’t win 24 games last season by ranking 12th in the Big Ten in points per game.

Rather, the Hawkeyes’ 66.3 points allowed per game, second in the conference, made the difference, and McCollum prides himself on that fact.

“We’ll always play defense,” the coach said at his introductory press conference.

McCollum, a former guard at Northwest Missouri State, began his head coaching career at his alma mater, where his teams won four NCAA Division II titles. Such success transferred to the Division I level, where over two seasons split between Drake and Iowa, his teams went a combined 55-17. Over 17 years as a head coach, McCollum has amas-

sed a 449-108 record – the fifth-best mark all-time among men’s basketball coaches.

Such a resume made McCollum an attractive open this offseason when the North Carolina job opened. But the head coach, born in Iowa City, insisted he’s not leaving his native team anytime soon.

“Those are all lies,” he said of rumors linking him to the Tar Heels.

For McCollum, team success is rooted in the definition.

The coach wants talent, but not necessarily when such skill embraces individuality, or worse, a lack of effort and physicality.

“If you’re a tough dude, this is a good spot for you. If you’re soft, and you like yourself way too much, this is probably not the spot for you,” McCollum said. “We just try to recruit tough dudes who want to be a part of something bigger than themselves, and hopefully people see that, win or lose.”

The Old Capitol Museum

The Museum of Natural History invites curiosity and learning through exhibits and collections of Iowa’s natural beauty and long-standing culture. The museum is in Macbride Hall, a cornerstone building that is home to the UI’s anthropological department. The exhibits on display showcase many kinds of species and artifacts that have been seen throughout history. In fact, many of the fossils that are found on Iowa land, even today, are from the Ice Age period. Walk-in tours are always welcome if you find yourself with time in between classes, or if you’re looking to kill some time on campus. The museum employees will guide you on your journey to learn more about the best-kept secrets in the state.

When visiting the Old Capitol Museum, you’re greeted at the front of the notorious golden dome at the heart of the Pentacrest. The dome is one of the most recognizable symbols of Iowa and has always been a staple for proud Iowans. This spot is the only natural history museum in the state.

As the tour begins, the past of Iowa City floods each room. Considering that Iowa City used to be the state capital, the Old Capitol Museum was designed to show you what it would be like to live in Iowa City back when it all started. Pedestrian Mall creates intersection of campus, city The Iowa City Pedestrian Mall is the center of nightlife, food, and entertainment for students and residents.

In the center of the Iowa City Downtown District, the Pedestrian Mall provides a space for the community to shop at small businesses, experience local music and entertainment, and eat at unique restaurants and cafes.

Located across the street from the Old Capitol Mall and not far from the Pentacrest, the Ped Mall is a central hub for students.

The Ped Mall was constructed in the 1970s, and the outdoor, traffic-free commercial center features a myriad of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, and a playground was recently rebuilt.

Hosting over two dozen dining options, the Ped Mall is home to restaurant and dessert spots including Aspen Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Burger Haul, The Dandy Lion, and Formosa.

The mall is also the site of Bread Garden Market, which is a locally owned grocery store and eatery.

Restaurants like Masala Indian Cuisine and Nodo on Dubuque Street, or Pop’s BBQ on the corner of Market Street and Dubuque Street are wonderful family-friendly options. Seven elected community members meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month to make local government decisions.

The Iowa City City Council is comprised of seven members from various districts across the city. Members are elected to serve fouryear terms. The mayor and mayor pro tem are elected at the beginning of each new session by the other six members of the council.

Bruce Teague was first elected to the council as an at-large representative in 2018 and was later elected as mayor in 2020 and 2022. Reappointed as mayor in 2026, his term will expire in 2030. Teague has been an Iowa City resident since 1993 and studied at Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa.

Megan Alter has served on the Iowa City City Council from 2022-26, and was appointed mayor pro tem in January. Alter serves as the chair of ACT’s United Way Annual Fundraising Drive and is on the leadership committee of the South District Neighborhood Association.

Laura Bergus has served as a member of the council since 2020.

She has lived in Iowa City since 1981 and acts as an attorney for Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus LLP outside of her time on the council. After graduating high school at the age of 16, Bergus received her bachelor’s in anthropology from the UI in 2002 and later returned in 2011 to receive a Juris Doctor degree from the College of Law.

Shawn Harmsen was elected for his first term to the council in 2022 alongside Alter and represents District B. He attended Wartburg College and the University of Northern Iowa for degrees in the field of communications. Most recently, Harmsen graduated from the UI with a doctorate in journalism and mass communication. He currently works as a visiting assistant professor of communication studies at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Oliver Weilein is city council’s most recently elected member, beginning his term in 2025. Weilein represents District C and is also a member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County and the Iowa City Tenants Union.

Mazahir Salih, At-large

Josh Moe started his term in January 2024, and is an at-large official. He studied political science and music at Luther College, graduating in 2005. Moe is also an architect and project manager at OPN Architects and a volunteer.

Prior to being elected, Moe said his main goals were to make public spaces more inclusive, reach the city’s climate action goals, encourage wise investments in public infrastructure, create more jobs, and improve the city’s public transportation.

Mazahir Salih served on the Iowa City City Council from 2018-21, with a term as mayor pro tem from 2020-21. Salih has also been involved in various other organizations in Iowa City, including executive director and co-founder of the Center for Worker Justice.

The first meeting of the 2026-27 school year will fall on Sept. 1 and is open to the public. Community members are welcome to share their concerns about the city or certain laws with the council.

Setting a Budget Financial independence can be difficult at first if you don’t set a budget. Budgeting allows you to keep track of your expenses while avoiding overspending.

Everyone will have a different budget, but budgeting is the first step to good financial decision-making.

Getting a Job Becoming a student employee might seem overwhelming, but it provides additional sources of income and additional spending flexibility.

Students who work 1-20 hours per week have a higher average GPA than students who do not have a student job, according to the UI Pomerantz Career Center.

There are over 7,000 students who are employed with on-campus part-time positions, according to UI Human Resources. On-campus employment opportunities within the Division of Student Life that provide flexible hours.

Downtown Iowa City businesses are also an alternative employment opportunity.

Utilize Your Meal Plan Your meal plan provides access to the dining hall locations across campus, and you should aim to use that as much as possible. Meal plans also provide dining dollars that can be used at all dining locations on campus. Your meal plan can help save you from spending a lot of money at downtown restaurants.

Take advantage of free and low-cost activities.

There are many low-cost and free entertainment opportunities available across Iowa City for students. Recreation Services regularly hosts different intramural activities throughout the year, including sand volleyball, basketball, and esports. The CAMBUS system is free and Iowa City transit is a low-cost method for students to travel around the Iowa City area.

Banking literacy Be prepared to actively track your spending and banking statements with mobile banking apps. Hills Bank in the Old Capitol Mall is also a great local banking option that offers certain benefits for UI students.

Utilizing public transportation Avoid using costly food delivery services.

Walking or taking the bus to pick up food with a friend can be fun and will save you money.

Familiarize yourself with local public transportation, namely CAMBUS and Iowa City transit, and the routes that they take to figure out how to get where you want to go.

The Transit app provides real-time updates and comprehensive information on bus routes as well as integrated ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft.

Nite Ride provides late-night, direct transportation around campus for all students from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. every single day. It is a great way to get home from a friend’s dorm | late at night.

Old Capitol Mall offers resources for all student needs The Old Capitol Mall, partially owned by the university, is another space on campus that students can use to study and purchase essential items.

The Old Capitol Mall, located just across the street from the Pentacrest, has been a hotspot for students since it opened in the ‘80s.

The mall provides a number of local Asian cuisine options such as China Plus and Zolly’s Grill, along with popular chains like Chipotle, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Noodles and Co. The Old Cap Mall additionally has stores for those looking to cure their sweet tooth like Sweets and Treats and Cookies and More. The mall also has improved ramen options at Asia Plus.

On top of its food options, the Old Cap Mall has a plethora of stores that are well-equipped to serve students’ needs. Blick Art Materials serves as a great stop for artists of all levels, while Hawkeye Fan Shop serves as a great destination for fans to stock up on their gameday gear.

Iowa City is a hotspot for theater and live music from Riverside Theatre’s newest location to the Englert Theatre’s classic performances.

Englert Theatre | 221 E. Washington St. The Englert Theatre has presented a great deal of fantastic music in the last year. With performances from artists including The Wallflowers and the Indigo Girls, stunning talent makes its way through the theatre. Every spring, the Englert Theatre also invites musicians from across the country to perform and speak its Mission Creek Festival. Featuring unique entertainment, the Englert Theatre is not a venue to miss.

Riverside Theatre | 119 E. College St. Film Scene | 404 E. College St. FilmScene is a non-profit venue that often shows independent and indie films.

The organization partners with the University of Iowa’s Bijou Film Board to plan screenings that are of interest to UI students.

Along the Pedestrian Mall in Iowa City, Riverside Theatre opened its new location near the epicenter of arts in the city. Since opening in the new location, the company has produced plenty of shows that ask important questions.

Hancher | 141 Park Road Hancher Auditorium, the largest performance venue on campus, features professional touring dance, music and theater performances.

Hancher has been the cultural hub of the University of Iowa campus.

Elray’s Live and Dive | 211 Iowa Ave. Located on Iowa Avenue., Elray’s Live and Dive is a well-known music hotspot downtown. Known primarily for its live country concerts from local and national talent, music from all genres has been played there.

Gabe’s | 332 E. Washington St. Gabe’s has been a staple in the Iowa City area for more than 50 years. Previously hosting Nirvana and Weird Al Yankovic, among other accomplished artists, Gabe’s has a reputation for presenting great music. Navigating Iowa City public transportation University of Iowa students have access to three main systems for transportation including Cambus, Iowa City and Coralville Transit, and Nite Ride.

Navigating public transportation across campus, Iowa City, and Coralville is an avenue for independence that new University of Iowa students can gain. Using cell phone apps and general city knowledge, students can get anywhere at almost any time with the use of public transportation. The UI Cambus system, Iowa City and Coralville Public Transit, and Nite Ride provide students with transportation at little-to-no cost.

UI Cambus System The Cambus system is a UI student-led organization.

It was founded in 1971. The bus system is accessible to all individuals and is free.

Cambus has 18 fixed routes for students to use and updates the lines for each semester. The bus system does not operate during most UI holidays and select holiday weekends on Thanksgiving and winter and spring break, according to the Cambus website.

Iowa City and Coralville Transit The UI recommends the use of the Transit app to access routes and plan trips with Iowa City and Coralville Transit. UI students can pay fares or buy a pass to ride the bus. Iowa City Transit recently purchased four new electric buses to lower city-wide carbon emissions and use 5 percent of diesel that non-electric buses use.

Nite Ride Nite Ride is a free late-night transportation service for UI students, faculty, and staff. The service can pick you up any time from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily. Individuals can locate busses on the Transit app and take either the Black or Gold route.

Hawkeyes embracing identities: multicultural and international student support at the UI The Office of Multicultural and Interational Student Support and Engagement strives to support University of Iowa students with underrepresented identities along with a variety of student organizations, events, and programming.

The five Office of Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement areas, diversity programming, and more than 100 different multicultural organizations help to make the University of Iowa campus as inclusive as possible.

Each branch of MISSE seeks to provide a “Home Away From Home” environment and help students succeed both academically and socially throughout their college experience. Cultural centers also offer a variety of intra-cultural and cross cultural educational and leadership opportunities.

Afro-American Cultural Center: Dubbed with the nickname “the Afro House,” the Afro-American Cultural Center was founded in 1968 and is a space to recognize and empower Black students.

The Afro-House has remained active on social media and posts information on programming to its Instagram regularly. Students can follow @uiowaafrohouse for more information on events and ways to get involved.

Latino Native American Cultural Center: Frequently referred to as the LNACC, the Latino Native American Cultural Center was formed in 1971 and just celebrated its 50th anniversary of being a safe space and haven for students on campus. The center aims to help students develop authentic relationships and foster a sense of belongingness and pride for their cultural heritage. Students looking to get

involved with the center can find it on the MISSE website or get information on events, celebrations, and programming on the @uiowalnacc Instagram page.

Asian Pacific American Cultural Center: Known as the APACC, the Asian Pacific American Cultural Center serves to provide a space for Asian American and Pacific Islanders at the UI. E stablished in 2003, the center’s mission is to foster fellowship and community building while creating a positive atmosphere of affirming and healing student identities. Information on events, social justice education, and programs can be found on its website and social media pages. @uiowaapacc is its Instagram page username.

Pride Alliance Center: The Pride Alliance Center, or Pride House, creates a space on campus aimed at supporting student wellness and enabling a nurturing environment for LGBTQ+ students.

International Student Support and Engagement: The International Student Support and Engagement, ISSE for short, is an initiative focused on supporting the interna-

Multicultural and International Student Organizations: The UI has more than 100 different multicultural and international student organizations that exist on campus and have operated both in person and virtually throughout the pandemic.

Some of the groups include student-issue based organizations, major/field of study based organizations, or Fraternity and Sorority life within the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council.

Recreational services: The University of Iowa’s Recreational Services offers comprehensive health and fitness programming for students, faculty, staff, and the Iowa City community.

It features four main indoor facilities, including the nationally-ranked Campus Recreation & Wellness Center, dozens of intramural and club sports, and outdoor adventure activities.

All sororities and fraternities on campus partake in various activities together throughout the year, but always have one common goal in mind: furthering the bond within the Fraternity and Sorority community. They do this by putting emphasis on developing a better understanding of each other while serving others and achieving academic excellence.

If this seems like something you may be interested in, check out the orientation dates for Greek life on campus, which can be found on the UI website under “Fraternity and Sorority Life.” The “Joining Requirements” page will give you all the information you need to know about connecting with Greek life at the UI. There are a lot of different options for students looking to join Greek life at the UI, which has four different councils:

The Interfraternity Council works to endorse scholarship, leadership, sportsmanwship, and brotherhood to unify the fraternity community.

The Multicultural Greek Council promotes multicultural awareness to improve relations among all campus fraternities and sororities.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council was established on the belief of brotherhood/sisterhood, high scholarship, leadership, and service to others, and is historically available to African American students.

Lastly, the Panhellenic Council consists of women who work together to unite sororities, empower women, focus on common goals, and create a network of support for chapters and members.

Within these four councils, over 3,600 students at the university are involved in Greek life and there are currently 45 chapters to choose from.

32nd annual UI Dance Marathon event raises $1.6 million

Dance Marathon 32 brought together over 1,300 students and community members to support pediatric cancer care.

For the last 32 years, University of Iowa students have gathered in the Iowa Memorial Union for a 24-hour dance party to fundraise for the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital to support its fight against pediatric cancer.

In 2026, Dance Marathon raised over $1.695 million, surpassing last year’s total of $1.558 million.

The 24-hour Big Event runs from 7 p.m. to 7 p.m., with dancers remaining on their feet the entire time in support of pediatric cancer patients.

Throughout the night, participants take part in themed activities, games, and line dances while listening to hourly stories from Dance Marathon families. Key moments include the Kiddo Graduation, recognizing patients five years cancer-free, and the Circle of Hope, a candlelit ceremony

honoring children who have passed.

This year’s campaign was “Every Story Matters.” Current Director of the organization, Aubrey Coleman, said the hope is to highlight that whether you’re a family, participant, or volunteer, each individual brings something really impactful.

“There’s a lot of history and tradition there, and I think just being a part of something so much bigger than yourself as a college student and getting to see that direct impact to your community, it’s really important,” Coleman said, “ I think that feeling that you get from being a part of a dance marathon is really timeless.”

Over the years, Dance Marathon has raised more than $39 million and currently supports 1,400 kids and their families.

The Big Event night is filled with a mix of emotions as participants go from dancing with their friends to shedding tears over the stories parents share.

“It’s fun, but at the end of the day, it’s about the families — and when you hear their stories, that’s what keeps you going, even when it gets hard,” Campbell Wood, executive director of DM 32, said.

The organization is the largest student-led philanthropy and student organization on campus, with over 200 leadership members and over 1,300 dancers. To participate in this year’s DM32 Big Event, dancers were required to pay a $30 registration fee and raise a minimum of $400. This year, the event hosted more dancers than any year since the COVID-19 pandemic.

How to get politically active on campus University of Iowa has many political opportunities and organizations for students.

Historically, Iowa has been the first state to have a say in the nation with the caucus. While that may not still be true for the Democratic Party, the strong political environment established the University of Iowa as a great place to be politically active.

Throughout the year, many Iowa politicians and national politicians make their way through campus and Iowa City.

The UI offers many different political organizations that allow students to foster their interests in politics.

These organizations hold meetings and provide a safe space for their members to share and discuss events, ideas, and beliefs.

University Democrats at Iowa The University of Iowa University Democrats at Iowa is a partisan organization that aims to bring positive social change to campus and the Democratic Party. It hosts political forums on campus and brings candidates for several elections to engage with UI students.

The group strives to influence the Democratic Party on campus and around the state and the Johnson County Democrats, according to its website.

Another group on campus is the Young Democratic Socialists at Iowa. It is a left-wing activist group focusing on race, gender, and economic equity.

University of Iowa College Republicans The University of Iowa College Republicans is another partisan organization on campus that aims to spread and foster conservative thoughts and beliefs throughout the UI. Through its meetings, students can meet other like-minded individuals. Last year, the College Republicans brought President Donald Trump’s former Campaign Manager Kellyanne Conway to campus.

In addition to the College Republicans, there is Young Americans for Freedom, which is another conservative group on campus.

Other Political Opportunities Incoming students can also be a part of the Political Matters Living Learning Community, where students interested in politics, government, and social work live together on campus in a residence hall.

Pi Sigma Alpha is an Honors Society students can join that is dedicated to students interested in politics. This organization strives to recognize merit achievement by UI students in the field

of political science and public affairs.

New to campus is Bridge Iowa, a political organization created to fight political polarization. The organization welcomes members of all political ideologies and works to create civic political dialogue on campus.

Get involved with UI Undergraduate Student Government

Students who are interested in serving as a voice for the undergraduate student body may want to join student government and serve as a senator.

The University of Iowa Undergraduate Student Government serves all 23,000 undergraduate students at the university through weekly senate meetings, committees to represent all different areas of campus, and advocating for students at a variety of levels.

In its mission statement, USG states the organization “exists to represent, serve, and empower all University of Iowa undergraduate students.” Senators and executives’ duties include acting as the voice of the undergraduate student body by expressing concerns and comments to outside organizations including the state Board of Regents, the Iowa Legislature, and other local/federal

legislators. USG is also in charge of allocating certain funds on campus.

Most recently, USG passed legislation to designate a room for international students in the Old Capitol Town Center and allocating $3,000 to create 750 student parking vouchers for city parking ramps during the final two weeks of the semester.

Students can run in an election for a USG position, which takes place every March for President, Vice-President, At-Large Senators, Independent Senators, and Constituency Senators. If students are looking to get involved as soon as possible, they can apply to be a senator or an executive when they arrive at the university in the fall.

Military opprotunities for students on campus Students at the University of Iowa can benefit from joining the various military organizations on campus.

For University of Iowa students who are looking to get involved on campus and become active in the military, the university offers two branches of ROTC programs, giving students the opportunity to train for either the Army or the Air Force branches.

Air Force

The Air Force ROTC program at the UI allows members to maintain the typical college life of a student while also taking part in a supportive community full of fellow Hawkeyes in the ROTC. To be eligible to participate in the university’s Air Force ROTC branch, students must maintain at least a 2.50 GPA in addition to maintaining the adequate health and fitness required to pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test.

Students are also required to take aerospace studies courses, which will allow them to meet their respective graduation requirements.

Upon graduating, Air Force ROTC students are commissioned as second lieutenants and

advance into a field with more than 140 prospective options.

Army

The Army ROTC gives students the opportunity to experience top-notch leadership and management skills that are needed to become a future U.S. Army Officer or for

other career paths.

Enrolling in ROTC does not automatically sign students up to join the Army or put an obligation on them. Rather, students will take an ROTC class where they can receive college credit.

Requirements to join the university’s Army ROTC program include being enrolled as a full-time UI student, being a U.S. citizen, and maintaining at least a 2.50 GPA. Upon graduating, Army ROTC members are commissioned as U.S. Army Second Lieutenants and will receive specialized training in one of the 17 different Army branches and various opportunities for advanced leadership positions and post-graduate education.

New USG admin discusses goals for 2026-27 Emily Cross hopes to provide students with mental health resources, lay foundation to increase student wages.

The 2026 University of Iowa Undergraduate Student Government election season marked a historic year for student engagement, with 733 more students voting this year than in 2025, totaling 1,947 votes.

Emily Cross, a third-year student at UI and the incoming president of USG, said she is proud of USG’s direction toward becoming a more visible presence on campus.

“That means more students are engaged with us and are aware of the services that we’re providing,” she said. “We always say that we want student government to be a household name. I really want to help increase our visibility, and I want to help set up whoever is after me.”

Cross was the vice president of USG for the 2025-26 year, running unopposed with her vice president candidate, Matiana Edmonds, a second-year student at the UI and the speaker pro tempore for the 2025-26 academic year.

Cross said she believes her time as vice president has already given her a head start in building connections with UI officials.

“My big goal is to work with the different colleges more con-

sistently,” she said. “I want to make sure that students’ money that they’re paying here is going right back into their hands.”

Cross hopes to use the summer to meet with various college deans to set up a subsidized flu shot program for students running from the fall to winter.

“There’s always roadblocks,” she said. “If we can’t implement it, then I think something in student government that we focus on is you’re always setting up the next person. If we can’t necessarily get the program down, we can provide students with different resources of where to go.”

Cross said USG could provide vouchers or coupons to local organizations, such as CVS, to give students access to medicines during flu season.

Cross also hopes to implement a subsidized dental program that provides students with access to dental cleanings and cavity treatment. She also wants to provide tangible items such as hand warmers and ponchos for the student section at Kinnick Stadium.

Her long-term goals consist of continuing to advocate for

mental health on campus and higher student wages.

Cross currently serves on the UI’s Revenue and Efficiencies Strategic Plan Action and Resource Committee, or reSPARC, a committee that strategizes on student data to increase student wages.

“That’s one of those long-term goals where we start the work now and then maybe 1 or 2 admins down the road, we see the increase,” she said.

One of USG’s last resolutions for the spring term was a letter addressed to the UI calling on the university to raise the minimum wage for student workers from $8.20 to $14 an hour.

Looking ahead to the fall, Cross said she hopes students become involved with USG and other clubs and organizations around campus. She said that while they may hit roadblocks during her term as president, she hopes USG never falters in its efforts to improve the college experience for UI students.

“I’m a person who cares, so I think showing up every day and giving 110 percent is something that’s super important to me,” she said.

Finding faith and fellowship on campus

The UI offers faith organizations for many religions for students to connect with on campus.

In addition to cultural student organizations, the University of Iowa offers student-led clubs for members of select belief groups to gather, practice worship, and study. Additional support for those of non-represented beliefs can also be found throughout Johnson and Linn county.

The Newman Catholic Student Center The Newman Center gives opportunities for students to grow in faith, fellowship, and service. Located on 104 E Jefferson St, they offer daily Mass, over 20 Bible study groups, Fall and Spring retreats, and academic scholarships. The center also provides leadership training and community building through events like „Newman Night Out.” The center’s weekly adoration, confession, and local service trips enrich the experience.

Graduate students and young professionals can also find dedicated services that cater to their schedules.

The University of Iowa Muslim Student Association This association fosters a welcoming community for Muslim students and allies. They offer regular student-led services for spiritual growth, including bi-weekly Halaqas (study circles),

Jummah (Friday) prayers, and religious discussions. Students can also attend social events, charity drives, and interfaith dialogues to build connections on campus and give the community a better understanding of Islam. MSA has annual Ramadan iftars, game nights, and volunteer or fundraising opportunities that serve both local and global causes.

The University of Iowa Campus Christian Fellowship This fellowship is a non-denominational, student-led organization centered on the teachings of Jesus Christ, guiding students through Biblical scripture and worship. Students can attend their weekly women’s and men’s groups held every Monday afternoon. The fellowship also offers an annual spring retreat, an adult camp for ages 18-24, and missionary trips for those who want to spread the gospel abroad. Beyond these events, members frequently gather for informal coffee chats, game nights, and community service projects around campus.

The Iowa Hillel House The Hillel House connects students to Jewish values, culture, and community throughout campus. Hillel provides

student-led Shabbat services every Friday afternoon, followed by a Kosher dinner at their headquarters on 122 East Market St. Hillel also hosts speaking events and casual bagel brunches for those who want to learn about Jewish culture and experiences.

Their holiday and festival services include Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Tu B’Shvat, Purim, and Passover. Students can also attend the local Iowa City Chabad House, which the Hillel House often partners with. Hillel consultants also provide students with study abroad, internship, and career opportunities in Israel.

The University of Iowa Orthodox Christian Fellowship This fellowship offers students a place to worship, learn, and gather on the teachings of Orthodox Christianity. Meetings vary, allowing flexible attendance.

Whether you are a practicing student or simply curious, this student-led community is a spiritual home for those looking into Orthodoxy on campus. In addition the Orthodox Fellowship partners with the local Saint Raphael’s Orthodox Church on 722 E College St, for prayers and also hosts social events and scripture discussions with Orthodox leaders in the Iowa City community.

The Iowa volleyball team finished its 2025 campaign with a 15-17 overall record and a 6-14 mark in the Big Ten. Yet behind the losing numbers is progress. The 15 victories are the program’s most since 2015. Head coach Jim Barnes started his fourth season with a six-match winning streak, highlighted by wins over Illinois State, Butler, and Utah Tech; five of the first six victories were sweeps.

Senior Claire Ammeraal started all 32 matches and led the offense with 1,190 assists.Senior Milana Moisio transferred in from Miami and anchored the defense with 451 digs. Ammeraal added 289 digs, while second-year Jaimie Marquardt tallied 192.

Iowa totaled 1,662 kills, 20 more than its opponents. Graduate Chard’e Vanzandt led the team with 386 kills, freshman Carmel Vares added 306, and third-year Hannah Whittingstall collected 225.

The Hawkeyes are set to return 13 members of the 2025 squad next season, including Vares, Marquardt, and Whittingstall. Iowa also added transfer Ksenija Tomic from Oregon and recruits Nikolija Bulatovic and Henlee Moszkowicz from the 2026 class.

The 2026 season will also feature the debut of the Big Ten Volleyball Tournament, beginning Nov. 20 at Fishers Event Center in Fishers, Indiana.

The Iowa field hockey team ended its 2025-26 season with a 14-6 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes won four of seven games against ranked opponents duirng the regular season, including a 4-3 overtime win at No. 15 Rutgers. Most notably, however, Iowa made one of its best runs in the Big Ten tournament in recent years.

As the No. 3 seed, the Hawkeyes finished runner-up to No. 1 Northwestern. Though they missed out on the automatic bid to the national tournament, the season’s resume was good enough to get them a No. 9 seed, despite losing their opening game, 2-1, to No. 8 Duke.

Third-year Dionne van Aalsum led the Hawkeyes with 28 goals.

Graduate student Fréderique van Cleef finished second with 12, and first-year Felicia Zonnenberg led the team with 13 assists in her first season. Looking to next year, the program will return 22 of its 26 players, with six in their senior season, including Rachel Herbine, Gia Whalen, and van Aalsum. Iowa will remain one of the top teams to look out for in the 2026-27 season, with so many of its leading scorers and top players returning under the direction of head coach Lisa Cellucci, an Iowa alum who’s spent the last 27 years on staff and was inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame this season.

Striking The finish Driving season line forward Following two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the Iowa soccer team once again made the postseason and advanced to the second round with a win over South Dakota State. The Hawkeyes then fell to LSU and finished the season with a 12-5-4 record.

Graduate student Kelli McGroarty led Iowa’s efficient offense with six goals. Three players recorded four goals each: first-year Liana Tarasco, third-year Berkley Binggeli, and graduating Hawkeye Kenzie Roling.

Goalkeepers Taylor Kane and Fernanda Mayrink starred in the net for the Hawkeyes. The duo combined for over 62 saves and 10 shutouts this season as Iowa finished among the top-50 in Division I shutout percentage. With Kane graduating and Mayrink entering the transfer portal, first-year goalkeeper Caroline Ready will look to anchor the Iowa defense next season.

The success of this season marked the end of an era, as head coach Dave DiIanni accepted the head coaching job at Michigan.

Iowa found its next head coach, Dean Ward, in February. The Birmingham, England, native spent the previous two seasons at Xavier, racking up 31 wins throughout his tenure, including a Big East Tournament Championship and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams each finished in 14th at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Michigan, and enjoyed a top-10 performance at the Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

At the NCAA Midwest Regionals, the Hawkeye men took 15th place with 430 points, while the women’s side captured 16th place with 424 points.

Second-year Elena Torres posted a season-best time in the event, completing the 6K in 21 minutes, 28.4 seconds.

Torres won first place at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City to open the season, running a 13:44.6 in the 4K, the third fastest time in program history. She entered the top 10 in program history in the 5K with a 16:47.1 at the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.

On the men’s side, senior Hayden Kuhn paced the squad in the conference championships with a 24:56.8 in the 8K, good for 83rd place. At NCAAs, Kuhnran a career best 32:59.8 in the 10K. First-year Elias Arbuckle finished just behind Kuhn at the Big Ten Championships with a 25:04.4. Arbuckle registered the fifth-best time in program history with a 18:09.0 in the 6K at the Hawkeye Invite.

The Iowa women’s golf team concluded its 2025-26 season with a 12th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships.

Iowa won the Diane Thomason Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City in September 2025. Third-year Maura Peters tied for fifth-place, the highest individual placing for a Hawkeye during the entirety of the season.

In March, the team finished in third at the Mountain View Collegiate in Saddle Brooke, Arizona.

Fourth-year Riley Lewis led the way for Iowa, finishing in a tie for sixth place individually.

Peters held the lowest individual score average throughout the season with a 74, with teammates Ximena Benites and Lewis just behind her, averaging 74.63.

Lewis held the lowest 18-hole score for Iowa during her senior season, with a 5-under par 67 at the Mountain View Collegiate.

The Hawkeyes will say goodbye to a big part of their team, with Lewis, Kaitlyn Hanna, Adie Maki, and Shannyn Vogler all graduating.

Benites and Peters will be the only two in the upcoming senior class, looking to make a mark during their final season as Hawkeyes. Benites shot a career-best in the first round of the Big Ten Championships with a 2-under par 68.

The No. 17 Iowa Gymnastics team wrapped up its 2025-26 season with a record of 14-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Hawkeyes, in their home meet with No. 30 Nebraska, broke their team-score record with a 197.225 and set a new attendance record of 4,100 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Over the 11 regular-season meets, Tran averaged a 9.900 and did not score lower than 9.850 on bars.

Aurélie Tran excelled in the postseason, scoring Iowa’s first perfect 10 on the bars event at the NCAA Regionals second-round meet, breaking Alexis Maday’s 9.975 record set in 2004. Iowa placed fourth in the Big Ten regular season and fifth at the Big Ten Championships, as the Canadian Tran earned first-team all-conference honors for the second consecutive season.

Besides Tran, Iowa had a multitude of standout freshmen as well, led by first-year Sophie Schriever, who was nominated to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and shared a spot with fifth-year JerQuavia Henderson on the all-conference second team. The program will honor its 50th season next year, as head coach Jen Llewellyn, entering her third season, returns 10 Gymhawks, and a few new recruits hope not only to follow up this year’s accomplishments but to go even further in pursuit of an NCAA Championship.

The Iowa men’s wrestling team capped off an inconsistent 202526 season with a 4th place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Hawkeyes finished with seven All-Americans and a 12-6 dual record.

At the national tournament, fourth-year Drake Ayala finished fifth at 133 pounds, fourth-year Michael Caliendo second at 165 pounds, fourth-year Patrick Kennedy third at 174 pounds, and second-year Ben Kueter fifth at heavyweight.

Caliendo’s second-place finish marked Iowa’s 35th tournament with at least one NCAA finalist.

With Ayala, Caliendo, Kennedy, and fellow senior starter Dean Peterson departing, Iowa found potential replacements both from the transfer portal and its roster depth.

Ryan Crookham, an All-American in 2024, arrives from Lehigh to fill the absence of Ayala. Carter Schubert went 21-8 last year as the 174-pounder at Oklahoma, but can wrestle at 165 to fill in for Caliendo.

Arnold spent part of last season at 174 pounds and aims to move down to his original weight. The opening at 125 pounds leaves an opportunity for Leo DeLuca, who wrestled only one match last year as a true freshman before a season-ending injury. Yet the lone victory flashed potential: a gritty 2-0 win over national-qualifier Mack Mauger from Missouri.

The Iowa women’s wrestling team finished its 2025-26 run with a 14-1 overall record in dual competitions and a second-place finish at the inaugural NCAA Women’s Wrestling Tournament, hosted at Coralville’s Xtream Arena.At the NCAA Championships, the Hawkeyes crowned three champions in second-year Valarie Solorio, redshirt junior Kylie Welker, and fourth-year Kennedy Blades. Iowa finished with nine All-Americans. Blades and Welker were also named finalists for the honor of USA Wrestling’s Women’s College Wrestler of the Year.

Welker nabbed a perfect record of 21-0 on the way to her third national title, with 19 of her wins coming from a fall or technical fall. For Blades’ part, she went 19-0, registering 13 technical falls and five pins. As a team, Iowa had 11 wins over ranked opponents in dual competition this season. The Hawkeyes hold a 49-1 dual mark in the program’s two seasons of existence.

Iowa’s lone loss came at the hands of North Central at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Jan. 10, where the Hawkeyes fell, 23-21.

At the 2026 NCAA Championships in March, Iowa’s trio of champions helped the Hawkeyes take second place with 166 team points. McKendree took first place with 171 points, while North Central placed third, netting 123.5 points.

The Iowa swim and dive team finished the 2025-26 season 5-3 overall, earned two conference wins, and placed 12th in the Big Ten Championships. The Hawkeyes opened the season with a victory over Northern Iowa, then finished strong with four consecutive wins.

Second-year Stephanie Avram, first-year Zita Bernatsky, and fourth-years Geneva Pauly and Lainey Woodward all qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March. Bernatsky placed 15th on the one-meter springboard, while Pauly placed 13th on the platform.

Iowa first-year Payton Flowers shone in her collegiate debut season, adding four individual times to the program record books. Hailing from DeForest, Wisconsin, Flowers holds Iowa’s all-time record in the 50-meter freestyle with a 21.94 and ranks second all-time in the 100-meter freestyle with a 48.80 ranking second in the 100-meter butterfly. She took home Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in October. Under head coach Nathan Mundt, the Hawkeyes added 24 new top-10 program records. Redshirt sophomore Jenna Kerr’s 49.27 in the 100-meter freestyle ranks third all-time, while sophomore Rachel Dildine’s 49.75 ranks fifth.

The relay team of Flowers, Dildine, Kerr, and sophomore Audrey Olen set a new all-time program best in the 400-meter freestyle.

The Iowa rowing team competed across the nation in 2025-26, from Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey; Lake Pickett in Orlando, Florida; and Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The Hawkeyes picked up three wins at the Big Ten Invitational in Sacramento, California. Divided into two teams of eight, plus a coxswain, the Hawkeyes placed first in both their groupings. The first team, led by junior coxswain Carissa Cochico, registered at six minutes, 39.35 seconds, while the second team, led by fellow junior coxswain Taylor Arbuckle, clocked in at six minutes, 45.12 seconds. At the varsity four division, which features four rowers and one coxswain, Iowa’s first team of Kimberly Marquez, Annabel Rayner, Evan Schwickerath, Soph Pepper, and Kendall Doerr finished first with a time of seven minutes, 31.58 seconds. The Hawkeyes’ second team of Maddie Reid, Madison Jones, Karire Evans, Sidra Sakati, and Issy Allen finished second in their grouping with a time of seven minutes, 36.73 seconds.

Head coach Jeff Garbutt has been on staff in Iowa City since 2013 and has served as head coach since 2021.

In 2025, when the Big Ten added Washington, USC, and UCLA and created an expanded conference championship, Iowa recorded three finishes above its seeding in the new format.

Loving the Out of Par for the Hurdling court the park course higher Looking to build off its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 15 seasons, the Iowa tennis team finished 12-14 overall, falling to Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes secured a shutout victory over rival Iowa State in Ames that kicked off a three-game win streak in February.

Iowa picked up conference wins over Penn State, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, and Purdue to finish 5-8 in the Big Ten. Junior Mia Mack led the Hawkeyes with a 16-4 mark in singles, including a 5-2 record against nationally-ranked opponents. Mack was named to the All-Big Ten first team, marking the fourth consecutive season an Iowa player earned All-Big Ten recognition.

She and senior Daianne Hayashida won a team-high eight doubles matches. Hayashida followed Mack with a 13-14 mark in singles. Senior Tereza Dejnozkova and sophomore Emma Tothová each logged double-digit singles wins with 11 and 10 apiece. Fellow seniors Pia Kranholdt and Nikita Vishwase went 5-2 as a doubles team.

Head coach Sasha Boros, an Iowa alum, became the program’s all-time winningest head coach when the Hawkeyes defeated Minnesota on April 17. Boros passed former Iowa head coach Micki Schillig, who coached Boros during her playing career from 1992-96.

The Iowa baseball team managed another winning season in 2026, as head coach Rick Heller surpassed 1,100 career wins.

Plenty of young talent saw the field for Iowa in 2026, with seven true freshman pitchers making appearances on the mound for the Hawkeyes.

Maddux Frese, a transfer from Southeastern Community College, headlined the Iowa pitching staff.

Frese was the most reliable pitcher for the Hawkeyes and was mostly used in a weekend starter role. Alivo also showed promising things on the mound, mostly out of the bullpen.

Offensively, second baseman Gable Mitchell led the way for Iowa in his final season. The Iowa City native continued his upward trend in batting average and OPS while also increasing his slugging percentage.

Mitchell also surpassed 200 career hits.First baseman Caleb Wulf saw an uptick in his power numbers in 2026, easily passing his doubles and home run total from 2025. Wulf was also a weapon in the field, showing off his athleticism and flexibility at first base to turn bad throws into outs.

While Iowa didn’t hit last regular season’s win total, there’s still plenty to look forward to for the next few years with the amount of young talent on the team.

The Iowa men’s golf team finished 15th out of 18 teams at the Big Ten Championships at North Plains, Oregon. The Hawkeyes recorded two top-50 individual finishers in first-year Bennett Warren and redshirt freshman Grant Gudgel.

The Hawkeyes capped off their regular season by winning the Hawkeye Invitational at Blue Top Ridge golf course in Riverside, Iowa. Shellberg led the way with an impressive 10-under par performance that took home the individual title. The team and individual championships were Iowa’s first since 2023. Iowa has won the Hawkeye Invitational four times since 2019.

Shellberg also led the team in scoring average with a 70.4 average over five rounds during the spring season. His low round of the year was 65, tying with third-year Max Tjoa for the team’s best this season.

Shellberg’s season stroke average of 70.4 ranked best on the team.

The team’s low rounds of the year came during the fall season, with scores of 272 in the second rounds of the Fighting Irish Classic and the Moraine Intercollegiate.

The trio of Tjoa, Gudgel, and Warren steadied the Hawkeyes with appearances in every tournament of the year. Tjoa is a three-year starter who averaged 72 and looks to continue his consistent performances in his senior finale.

Breaking records was a common theme for the Iowa men’s and women’s track and field teams for the 2025-26 season.

Third-year thrower Ryan Johnson has been one of the most prominent faces on the men’s side. He shattered the indoor weight throw record at 25.66 meters and won Iowa its first-ever NCAA Indoor Championship title in the weight throw.

In the hammer throw, he set a program record multiple times but currently holds it at 77.64 meters.

Senior Kalen Walker broke the indoor record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.50 seconds, and sophomore Luke Knepp now holds the school record in the outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:34.97.

On the women’s side, the quartet of Alivia Williams, Izzy Zahn, Damaris Mutunga, and Chioma Nwachukwu set the indoor 4x400 meter relay program record with a time of 3:29.63. Mutunga also holds the indoor school record in the 600meter with a time of 1:26.69, and Nwachukwu holds the Iowa record for the outdoor 400-meter with a time of 51.24.

The biggest opportunity for Iowa will be turning this season’s record-breaking progress into championship results. are positioned to build depth and improve consistency.

Nothing but dirt Under new head coach Stacy-May Johnson, the Iowa softball team narrowly missed out on the postseason, finishing one win short of qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes finished the season 27-27 overall and 17-17 in conference action.

Johnson, a former Hawkeye player and assistant coach, led the squad to a series sweep over Illinois to open the home conference slate and tallied wins over Iowa State and Northern Iowa.

Iowa received contributions in the circle from senior pitcher Serayah Neiss, who arrived with May-Johnson from Fresno State. Neiss finished with a team-high 12 wins and 75 strikeouts, tallying three complete games. Braylen Conlon was the only Hawkeye to record a shutout this season, and the first-year from Cedar Rapids recorded four wins and 40 strikeouts over 66 innings pitched.

Among Iowa’s routine position players, third-year outfielder Devin Simon led the Hawkeyes with a .326 batting average, followed by second-year Kiara Sipe and first-year McKenzie Leitgen at .308 apiece.

Junior Leah McAnally transferred from Boise State to Iowa and led the team with 35 runs driven in.

Iowa lost its home-run leader, Tory Bennett, to graduation, but looks to return three of its top four power hitters in Sipe, McAnally, and Leitgen, who launched eight homers apiece.

Record breakers Postseason push McCollum’s magic The Iowa football team posted another historic season in 2025. While the 9-4 record wasn’t anything new for the Hawkeyes, a couple of records were broken during the season.

With a 47-7 win over the University of Massachusetts on September 13, 2025, head coach Kirk Ferentz became the Big Ten’s winningest coach.

Transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski stole the hearts of the Hawkeye faithful from the second he set foot on campus. He also broke a wins record alongside Ferentz, becoming the winningest quarterback in NCAA history with 58 victories over his five seasons.While Gronowski didn’t shock the world with his passing ability, he opened a new phase to Iowa’s offense that hasn’t been seen in a long time — a dual-threat quarterback.

The Hawkeyes closed out the 2025 season with a 34-27 win over No. 14 Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on Dec. 31, 2025.

Gronowski went 16-for-22 for a season-high 212 yards and two touchdown passes,

and added a rushing score.

Tight end DJ Vonnahme put his name on the map with a huge receiving day in the Iowa victory, hauling in seven passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.

After losing a multitude of key contributors to graduation and the transfer portal, Ferentz and staff turned to the portal, landing 16 transfers for 2026.

All but one transfer joins Iowa with multiple years of eligibility.

Perhaps the biggest get for the Hawkeyes was wide receiver Tony Diaz, who racked up 881 yards in 2025 with Texas Rio Grande Valley in the program’s first-ever season. Diaz turned down offers from Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas, Virginia Tech, and Illinois.

The two will look to replace the 2025 Iowa safety tandem of Koen Entringer, who transferred to Louisville, and Xavier Nwankpa, who was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs.

After another successful season under Ferentz in 2025, he looks to make his 28th year as head coach even better with new faces across the roster.

Two years removed from the Caitlin Clark era, the Iowa women’s basketball team continues to enjoy postseason victories, but remains short of a Sweet 16 appearance under new head coach Jan Jensen. The Hawkeyes improved their win total by four this season compared to last, finishing at 27-7 overall.

Despite being picked outside the top five in the Big Ten preseason media poll, Iowa went 15-3 in conference action and finished second in the league behind UCLA. A No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, Iowa defeated Illinois and Michigan before falling to UCLA in the finals.

In the NCAA Tournament, Iowa received a No. 2 seed and hosted the first and second rounds at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes defeated 15th-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson before losing to tenth-seeded Virginia in double overtime.

Center Ava Heiden averaged less than 10 minutes per game in the 2024-25 season, but saw a significant boost in production in 2025-26.

The second-year averaged

a team-high 18 points per game and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors, and was an All-America honorable mention from the Associated Press.

Fellow sophomore Chazadi ‘Chit-Chat’ Wright finished third on the Hawkeyes with 12.5 points per game.

The Hawkeyes will need to replace four seniors, including the team’s leading rebounder, Hannah Stuelke and top defender Kylie Feuerbach.

Additionally, five Hawkeyes left via the transfer portal, including five-star recruit Addie Deal, who went to Wisconsin.

Nevertheless, the portal also benefited the Hawkeyes, who added guard Dani Carnegie from Georgia and Amari Whiting from Oklahoma State.

Another new face on Iowa’s roster next year is McKenna Woliczko. The 6-foot-2 forward from Archbishop Mitty High School in California is the No. 6-ranked player in the nation for the class of 2026, per ESPN. She is the program’s highest-rated recruit since Clark in 2020.

Iowa men’s basketball fans can sleep soundly until next season’s opening tipoff knowing that the program is in good hands. In Ben McCollum’s first season as the Hawkeyes’ head coach, the team went 24-13 overall, securing the program’s first 20-win regular season in four years.

Iowa went 10-10 in conference play, including an upset win over Nebraska at Carver-Hawkeye Arena that featured a court storm at the buzzer.

Despite falling in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament to Ohio State, Iowa still qualified for the NCAA Tournament as a No. 9 seed, going on to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987.

The Hawkeyes defeated eight-seeded Clemson, then dethroned defending champion Florida in the next round before taking down Big Ten foes Nebraska to reach rare territory. Iowa’s run ended with a 71-59 loss to Illinois.

Senior guard Bennett Stirtz led the team with 19.8 points per game and became the first in program history to record at least 700 points, 100 assists, and 50 steals in a single season. Stirtz left his mark during his lone season in Iowa City, ear-

ning first-team All-Big Ten honors from the media and an All-American honorable mention from the Associated Press. He is a likely NBA Draft pick in June. Along with Stirtz, Iowa lost its third-leading scorer, Alvaro Folgueiras, who transferred to Louisville. The forward played a crucial role in the Hawkeyes’ postseason run, tallying double-digit scoring in Iowa’s three victories.

Folgueiras is Iowa’s only transfer portal departure, as the Hawkeyes have plenty of returnees.

Forward Cam Manyawu will return for his senior season after leading the Hawkeyes in rebounding.

Iowa added two players in the transfer portal, including guard Ty’Reek Coleman, who averaged 10 points per game last season with Illinois State. The Hawkeyes also added help down low with 7-foot-3 center Andrew McKeever from St. Mary’s College. McKeever averaged 8.2 points and 9.2 rebounds last season and will have two years of eligibility left.

Incoming first-year players for Iowa include Ethan Harris from Camas, Washington, and Jaidyn Coon from Storm Lake, Iowa.

Living in UI residence halls

University of Iowa residence halls have different amenities and opportunities for the students who choose to live there.

The University of Iowa has 11 campus residence halls open to first year, returning, and transfer students. The residence halls are located on both the west and east sides of campus.

East side residence halls include Burge, Catlett,Currier, Daum, Mayflower, Parklawn, and Stanley with dining halls in Burge and Catlett. West-side residence halls include Rienow, Petersen, Slater, and Hillcrest, with a dining hall in Hillcrest. Dining hall meals can be paid for with a campus meal plan. There are a variety of meal plans that can fit the differing needs of students who do and don’t live on campus.

There are also convenience stores located around campus that accept flex meals or Hawk Dollars as payment. Stores that sell food, drinks, and other possible necessities, called C-stores, are in Burge, Mayflower, and Hillcrest.

Hillcrest, Rienow, Slater, and Petersen are closer to the UI sporting arenas and complexes

as well as the UI Hospitals and Clinics. Burge, Catlett, Currier, Daum, and Stanley are located closer to the Pentacrest and downtown Iowa City.

Every residence hall has different amenities, but all have at least one dedicated area for laundry services and study areas. Catlett, Currier, Hillcrest, and Mayflower have fitness centers for students.

Students can also choose to live within a Living Learning Community on campus, where students with similar interests and identities live in an area set apart from other dorm rooms.

Recently, the identity based LLCs were removed from campus, including “Unidos” for students who identify as Hispanic, “Young, Gifted and Black” for students who identify as African American, and “All In” for LGBTQ+ identifying students. There are six LLCs on campus, ranging from an LLC for students in engineering to those interested in arts.

Off-campus housing Tricks and tips for apartment hunting in Iowa City.

Do most students live in residence halls during their first year at the UI? Over 90 percent of first-year students decide to live in the residence halls. The University of Iowa does not require first-year students to live on campus, but it is more common for students to move into apartments during their second, third, or fourth year at Iowa.

Where do students find apartments?

There are a variety of services to find an apartment in Iowa City. For example, the UI has an “off-campus living” page on its website where students can find options for available rentals.

Talking to upperclassmen who live in apartments is also a great way to start collecting recommendations for the best places on campus.

How do students set up apartment tours?

Most rental companies should have an email or phone number that students can reach out to. It’s a good idea to look at an apartment before signing a lease and to start looking early.
