On Oct. 3, 2015, Iowa took down No. 19 Wisconsin with a defensive battle for the ages. The game’s only touchdown came when Hawkeye quarterback C.J. Beathard threw a 1-yard strike to tight end George Kittle with under three minutes to go until halftime. The Hawkeyes held the Badgers scoreless in the fourth quarter, pulling off the upset.

Wisconsin managed just 86 yards on the ground, averaging 2.5 yards per carry. Hawkeye cornerback Desmond King intercepted Badger signal caller Joel Stave twice in the game.

Following in the family footsteps And quarterbacks can hear those footsteps. Family comes first, but football dominates the Niemann household.

It was fourth-and-2 at the Hawkeye 39-yard line for Northern Illinois in a scoreless game near the end of the first quarter.

The Huskies went for it, trying a jet sweep to the right, but immediately after D. J. Brown got the handoff, Iowa linebacker Nick Niemann slammed him to the turf.

That was a big play for Niemann, who was starting his first game for Iowa.

It wasn’t his first tackle, but it was the first one that really got people’s atten-

tion.

Since then, Niemann has continued to make plays for the Hawkeye defense, racking up 12 tackles, including 2 for losses and a sack in the first three games.

While making an impact early in the season was big for Niemann individually to help solidify his starting spot, it also came with a sigh of relief from Iowa fans. Entering the season, the linebacker role was a big question mark; Iowa had lost three multiyear starters to graduation and was trying to replace them with young, inexperienced players.

Oddly enough, the Hawkeye that Niemann replaced was his older brother, Ben Niemann. Having to replace a brother, particularly one who started three years, racked up 201 tackles, and earned a spot on the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent might seem like a lot of pressure for a younger brother.

Nick didn’t see it that way.

“It wasn’t a burden,” he said. “I mean, obviously, he’s a good player, and I know I can follow in his footsteps and have a chance to be as good as he was. But I’m my own person, so each game I just try to play Nick Niemann.”

Of course, for the younger Niemann, performing on the football field is just what he does — it may have been the very thing he was born to do.

A Football Family For Nick Niemann, football runs in the family. His father, Rutgers defensive coordinator Jay Niemann, has had several coaching gigs around college football, and that is where Nick Niemann got his introduction to the sport.

Both Nick and Ben Niemann’s love of football started on their father’s practice field, then transitioned onto their own field in fourth grade, Nick Niemann when he joined his brother on one of Indianola’s youth football teams.

Being brothers and teammates from a young age helped them form a special relationship.

comes with any healthy brotherly bond is competition, and there was no shortage of that for the Niemann brothers. “[We’re] pretty competitive,” Nick Niemann said. “Ben and I have been like that since we started playing sports and were around each other, whether it was in the driveway, the backyard, [or] the basement. It’s always been like that.”

Wrestling matches between the two were a staple from the time they were little, and even today, they can still break out from time-to-time.

That competitive nature has factored into Nick Niemann’s success so far this fall.

“They’ve always been extremely competitive,” said Lou Ann Niemann, Nick Niemann’s mother. “I think the fact that Ben was a three-year starter at Iowa

— Kirk Ferentz, head coach The Niemann brothers were teammates once again when they played at Sycamore High School, until Ben Niemann left for college.

Shortly after Ben Niemann left, it was Nick Niemann’s turn to pick a college, and, unlike his brother, he had a plethora of choices where he could go.

From the beginning of Nick Niemann’s process of choosing a school, Iowa was atop the list because of his older brother.

“They had made the decision that if they could, they wanted to play together,” said Jay Niemann in an exclusive interview with The Daily Iowan.

While Iowa may have been the top option from the get-go, Jay Niemann Jay Niemann wanted to make sure Nick Niemann considered all his options, which involved 18 to 20 offers, including ones from Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Iowa State.

Ultimately, Nick Niemann chose to be teammates with his brother one last time.

“I knew at the end of the day it would come full circle,” Jay Niemann said. “I think deep down, he knew he wanted to play with Ben and that he would end up [at Iowa].”

Ben and Nick Niemann share a special connection, but part of what

was fairly motivating for Nick.”

Whatever the reason, both Niemann brothers have had exhilarating starts to the football season, and it all cumulated in one joyous moment for their mother.

After a tense August, with Ben Niemann fighting for a spot on the Chiefs and Nick Niemann vying for a starting spot on the Hawkeyes, the Niemanns experienced a waterfall of good news.

Nick Niemann won a starting spot on the Hawkeyes and, moments before his first start in a Hawkeye uniform, the Niemanns found out Ben had made the Chiefs’ final cut.

“I was squealing,” Lou Ann Niemann said. “It was so emotional just watching Nick run out of the tunnel and take the field starting, and then my phone rings, and Ben said, ‘I made it, I’m on the roster at KC,’ and I had just figured out that Rutgers had finished its game and won, so definitely a special day that I will never forget.”

Can We Get Another Niemann?

When looking at the two Niemann brothers in football uniforms, it would be nearly impossible to tell them apart — just one pound and one inch separate the two physically (Nick Niemann goes 6-4, 232 pounds, Ben Niemann 6-3, 233).

“They pretty much look the same,” Jay Niemann said. “Their frames, their

Along with their similar frame, the two brothers also have developed into incredibly similar players on the field. “[Nick] reminds me a lot of his brother Ben,” said Jake Gervase, who has started alongside both brothers. “Fast, athletic, can make plays both in the running and the passing game.”

Being tall and athletic are two essential traits to being a good linebacker, and they can’t be taught, which means both have been dream players for Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. He is left yearning for more Niemanns.

“I wish there was another brother coming,” he said. “Ben played that position really well for quite a while, but Nick has just kind of jumped in there, and it doesn’t seem like we’re dropping off at all.”

Of course, more than just length and speed have contributed to Nick Niemann’s early success as a Hawkeye.

All that football he was around as a kid surely rubbed off, giving him a unique edge.

“Just by being around the game, I think he’s got some instinctive qualities that somehow come along with being the son of a coach,” Jay Niemann said.

Length, speed, and instinct are all terrific starting ingredients for a football player, but that deadly combination means nothing without motivation.

Luckily, Niemann appears to have that, too.

“Nick has always been very driven and very motivated,” Lou Ann Niemann said. “When he puts his mind to something, he’s very motivated to achieve whatever it is.”

Heading into a night battle in Kinnick Stadium, Iowa is undefeated, and Wisconsin is unexpectedly 2-1 after suffering a 24-21 loss to BYU. The loss shouldn’t fool anyone, though — the Badgers are still a good team, and they will pose a big challenge for Iowa’s first Big Ten game.

Here’s a look at the Hawkeyes’ next opponent, by the numbers.

Taylor had a phenomenal freshman campaign in 2017, running for 1,977 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He hasn’t taken a step backwards this year, and he leads the conference with 515 yards and 5 touchdowns through three games. He also ranks second in the country in rushing yards.

His 171.7 yards per game is the best in the Big Ten and his average of 6.7 yards per carry is the second-best in the conference.

When the Badgers win, Taylor is a big reason.

Even when Wisconsin loses, Taylor’s performance doesn’t seem to be the problem. When the Badgers lost to the Cougars on Sept. 15, Taylor ran for 117 yards on 26 carries and added 3 receptions for 14 yards in the receiving game.

Wisconsin’s red-zone defense

The Badgers, who finished 2017 with the best defense in the Big Ten, have not fallen back when it comes to keeping teams from scoring.

When teams get inside the 20-yard line, Wisconsin has allowed just 4 touchdowns and 1 field goal, which is tied with Penn State for the best in the conference.

Wisconsin’s overall defense isn’t so good as it was last season. The Badgers gave up just 262.1 yards per game in 2017, but they now sit at 275.7. Although that is not a huge change, it ranks third in the Big Ten – behind Iowa and Minnesota – as opposed to leading the conference.

The Wisconsin pass defense is the second-best in the Big Ten, allowing only 145 yards a game, but its run defense is just middle of the pack, giving up 130.7 yards per game, ranking eighth.

A.J. Taylor’s average yards per catch

The Hawkeye secondary has done a good job of neutralizing big threats so far.

In Iowa’s win over Iowa State on Sept. 8, Hakeem Butler – who is fourth in the country with 26.1 yards per catch – was held to just 3 catches for 35 yards.

Iowa’s pass defense has been solid, allowing just 167 yards a game through the air to opposing offenses. Despite losing Josh Jackson to the NFL, the Hawkeyes haven’t really suffered.

Michael Ojemudia and Matt Hankins have done everything coaches can ask for, rarely getting burned and constantly holding receivers to small games.

If the Hawkeyes do a good job of containing Taylor, as they did against Iowa State running back David Montgomery, the Badgers might have to turn to the pass more.

POWER RANKINGS Welcome to Week 4. Thank goodness ties aren’t a thing in college football.

Urban Meyer had issues with text messages, but the Buckeyes don’t seem to have any issues with playing football.

After squeaking past Appalachian State, Penn State seems to have things under control.

3) Wisconsin (2-1):

I almost wrote a feature story on D.J. Durkin. Glad I didn’t go that route.

Indiana is undefeated to start 2018, AND it has one of the best wing places in the country (Buffalouie’s — look it up).

If Wisconsin could land a legitimate quarterback, the Badgers would be national-title contenders.

10) Northwestern (1-2):

11) Illinois (2-1):

Much like his team’s start, Jim Harbaugh’s khakis need to be ironed out.

Now in his third season with Illinois, Lovie Smith has 7 wins.

Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley has more touchdowns this season than Illinois has as a team. That trend will continue Friday.

Buffalo vs. Rutgers 11 a.m. | BTN

This one’s a toss-up. Rutgers losing to Kansas should not have happened, but here we are. Anything is possible from here on out.

Minnesota vs. Maryland 11 a.m. | BTN

Minnesota is looking for its first 4-0 start since 2013. It might happen, but Maryland’s powerful ground game might have other thoughts.

No. 23 Boston College vs. Purdue 11 a.m. | ESPN2

Can Purdue get win No. 1 of the season? Maybe. The Boilermakers have the potential to be one of the better teams in the West, but they haven’t shown it so far.

Nebraska vs. No. 19 Michigan

14) Rutgers (1-2):

Can’t see Scott Frost getting his first win as a Husker coach in the Big House, but who knows. Realistically, Michigan starts out Big Ten play with a win.

If Iowa beats Wisconsin on Saturday, it will win the Big Ten West. Book it.

L.J. Scott has more charges for driving without a valid license than Michigan State has touchdowns this season.

7) Minnesota (3-0):

3-0 looks good on paper, but facing New Mexico State, Fresno State, and Miami of Ohio changes your mind pretty quickly.

Three losses to start the year has me rethinking Purdue as my Big Ten West dark horse.

Even I didn’t expect the Scott Frost era to kick off this way. Cheers.

Rutgers allowed 55 (!!!) points to Kansas, the worst Power 5 team, last week.

Tulane vs. Ohio State 2:30 p.m. | BTN

Instead of asking if Ohio State will win, the real question is whether the Buckeyes put up 50 or 60 against the Green Wave. Wave goodbye to any chance of an upset.

No. 24 Michigan State vs. Indiana 6:30 p.m. | BTN

Indiana could pull it off this weekend. The Spartans are not the team everyone predicted in the preseason, and Indiana’s performed better than expected.

No. 18 Wisconsin vs. Iowa 7:30 p.m. | FOX

Best game of the Big Ten so far, and arguably the most important rivalry game until we have the Michigan and Ohio State clash on Nov. 24. Either Wisconsin or Iowa will represent the West in the conference championship, and this game will likely decide which one.

Daily Iowan Assistant Sports Editor Anna Kayser asked Hawkeye center Keegan Render some interesting questions unrelated to football.

Daily Iowan: What’s your go-to throwback jam?

Keegan Render: My go-to throwback jam, probably “September,” by Earth, Wind, & Fire. It’s a good song.

DI: What’s the worst purchase you’ve ever made?

Render: My opinion, probably just a pair of shoes that I didn’t need, but I’m sure my girlfriend has other issues with that.

DI: How would you describe your high-school self?

Render: Probably not much different than I am right now. I was kind of quiet and shy, but I don’t know. It’s been a long time.

DI: What do you think she’d say?

Render: She’d probably say my truck. I thought that was a good purchase.

DI: What’s your favorite homemade meal?

Render: My mom makes pretty good homemade tacos, so I’d probably say that.

DI: What’s your go-to Netflix show?

Render: I love “Supernatural.” I got introduced to it by my brother, and I love it.

DI: If you are playing Xbox or PlayStation, what game are you playing?

Render: Probably Fortnite or probably NFL. DI: What would you be doing if you weren’t playing football?

Render: If I wasn’t playing football right now … I’d probably be out of college.

Probably, hopefully, trying to become an athletics director.

DI: Who’s the funniest person on the team?

Render: I’m going to say the Paulsen twins; I think they’re the funniest. I’d do both of them, especially together.

DI: What character from “The Office” do you relate to the most?

Render: I’d probably say Jim, I don’t know why.

I’m just a pretty laidback guy, just kind of go with the flow.

DI: Chipotle or Pancheros?

Render: Panch, every time. It’s the burrito.
