Things almost went downhill for Iowa early against Iowa State, but the Hawkeyes battled through the adversity to win their fifth game in a row against the Cyclones.

peter-ruden@uiowa.edu Iowa might’ve been one fielded punt away from losing to Iowa State on Sept. 14. But that didn’t matter in the end.

Instead, the Hawkeyes extended their winning streak over Iowa State to five games with an 18-17 win over the Cyclones.

The game proved to be a grind-it-out, come-from-behind victory that was led by special teams and featured two lightning delays.

After recovering a muffed punt with 1:29 left in the game, Hawkeye players could be found on the sidelines using their

hands to count to five, symbolizing Iowa’s winning streak over its in-state rival.

“It’s very emotional,” Iowa wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette said. “You got Iowa State fans letting you have it, they’re up, they played a great game. Hats off to them. But once you come out on top, and all they’ve been doing is talking trash, you get to let them know that it’s still a Hawkeye state for another 365 days and that they’re going to hear about it afterwards.”

After the first weather delay, the Cyclones looked like they might run away with the momentum when wide receiver Deshaunte Jones threw a perfect ball to fellow receiver La’Michael Pettway on a double pass to give Iowa State

a 7-3 lead.

That didn’t happen.

After another weather delay — the delays totaled just under three hours — Iowa State took a 14-6 lead over the Hawkeyes with a 73-yard bomb pass on the second play of the third quarter, but Iowa fought back with a Nate Stanley rushing touchdown and two more Keith Duncan field goals to take an 18-17 lead with 2:55 remaining in the fourth.

All that Iowa needed to preserve its lead was to get a stop on defense after the Cyclones force it to punt.

The Hawkeyes never played defense, though.

participating this fall. The celebration will run through Nov. 2 with Dia de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead.”

The festivities are based on students, members of the celebration’s organizational team said, and every event that the center hosts received input from someone wanting to see something different in the festivities.

It may come as a surprise to current Hawkeye and Cyclone fans that the two teams haven’t always gone head-to-head every football season, but now Iowa and Iowa State fans alike can learn about the start of the rivalry series in the new documentary film Birth of the Cy-Hawk.

The film’s director and producer Ben Godar, an Iowa native, grew up as a college-football fan and said he wanted to bring the Cy-Hawk series’ origin story to fans. “[I] felt really steeped in the game and the history of the rivalry, and I had no idea about this,” he said.

Before 1977, the Hawkeyes and Cyclones had not played against each other for 43 years. The game returned following outcry from the two fanbases for the return of the rivalry games. A lawmaker also asked the two university presidents to create a series with both teams competing for the Cy-Hawk trophy.

HERITAGE FROM FRONT “This summer we engaged with students, even though they weren’t on campus, through our Instagram by asking questions to have them tell us what they liked in the past for programming and what ideas they had for this year,” said Isabela Flores, the student lead at the center.

Social media provides an outlet for feedback on these events, Flores said. She men-

tioned that the center has opened channels for people to make suggestions and interact through the virtual community the center has built.

Thomas A. Arce, the coordinator of UI Multicultural and International Student Support and Engagement, said there are new activities this year that aim to bring awareness to individuals who identify with both the Latinx community and other communities.

“In the spring, we had an event around queer Latinx identities that was led by students, and we saw that they

wanted more opportunities to express the intersections of their identities,” Arce said.

“So, I’m excited for ‘Queer Latinidad: Our Stories,’ which was created out of the spring event.”

Flores said she is excited for additional events that will bring awareness to what education looks like for the Latinx community. She highlighted the event “Fuerza en la Educación: Graduate School 101.”

“Students last semester asked for a graduate-school event because it’s critical to see Latinx people in higher

education,” Flores said. “This event has the potential to instill a lot of inspiration into the student body.”

Jose Muñiz Jr., a center programming assistant, said in an email to The Daily Iowan that these events try to create a sense of belonging for students.

“The events this month are open to everyone and anyone who wants to attend and learn, not just Latinx/a/o individuals on campus,” Muñiz said. “Latinx Heritage Month brings the entire community together and helps us show support for all underrepre-

DOC FROM FRONT Godar said he learned of this origin story in the late 2000s from a childhood friend whose father was Bob Uetz, one of the Cy-Hawk trophy’s primary creators.

After learning of the trophy’s origins, Godar said, his fascination grew over the years, and soon he brainstormed the idea for a documentary. Given his background in screenwriting, Godar said he felt he needed to make this film.

The story of the film follows some fans and their reactions to the first Iowa State University and University of Iowa game since the 43-year hiatus, played for the simple walnut and brass Cy-Hawk trophy.

Birth of the Cy-Hawk has toured around the state since April. The film débuted at Julien Dubuque Film Festival. It recently premiered in Ames and was shown Sept. 7 at FilmScene in Iowa City.

“It’s a very Iowa story,” FilmScene co-founder Andrew Sherburne said. “You can’t get much more Iowa than the Hawkeyes versus the Cyclones.”

Assistant Athletics Director Steve Roe said the term “rivalry” is thrown around often, but this particular rivalry should be enjoyed in good fun and with respect.

“I think amongst the players and the coaches, there’s respect [toward ISU],” Roe said.

Although the original CyHawk trophy was replaced in 2011, Godar said he hopes to

show the history that many Iowa fans never knew existed by premiering the film.

“When they stopped using this trophy, a piece of history was kind of lost there,” Godar said. “It was a piece that wasn’t very well known, so I just want to make sure this story of these guys and ordinary fans are known by people.”

Godar said the film has been

a passion project. After years of interviews and production, fans can now see their influence on the public.

“This series would not have restarted if not for the fans; they were really the ones that drove that,” Godar said. “To me, this trophy is such a perfect embodiment of that, because the trophy itself also came from the fans.”

Many student organizations outside of the cultural center will be involved with the heritage month this fall, Arce said, including Latinx sororities and fraternities on campus. This was crucial in bringing awareness to specific events and involving more students in the planning process than ever before, he added.

“Bringing all of these student organizations into spaces together amplifies the center and the community,” Flores said. “We springboard these organizations and increase awareness.”

on campus. According to fall 2018 UI enrollment data, 6.8 percent of undergraduate students identify as Hispanic/ Latinx.

Arce said, Latinx/a/o Heritage Month is about celebrating people’s identities and who they are as individuals and a community.

“Celebrating your own identity and being prideful, as well as celebrating among and with a community, is what we’re doing here,” Arce said.

“Our intention is to come together and celebrate.”

Alcohol isn’t always worth it Young Iowans need There are a number of substance-free ways to enjoy your time in college.

jason-oday@uiowa.edu Until recently, the University of Iowa has consistently ranked among the top party schools in America. This is in large part because of alcohol consumption — a habit which certainly isn’t lacking in Iowa City. While partying can be fun in moderation, binge-drinking and drug use also cause major problems on college campuses nationwide. I know this is a problem because I’ve seen it — not just in people I know, but in myself.

Of course, alcohol isn’t always harmful, but prioritizing sober social events and having relationships outside of the party scene are healthy ways to move forward.

It’s easy to have a fun time without getting a buzz. For those seeking social connec-

tions that aren’t primarily concerned with consuming alcohol, there are more than 500 student organizations at the UI for everything from Dance Marathon to the Hawkeye Fencing Club.

There are also support groups specifically for those who have struggled with substance use. The group Success, Not Excess aims to support those considering making changes to their alcohol or drug use. The student group Strength in Numbers supports those in recovery from alcohol or drug use with substance-free social events.

Watching others engaging in party culture now, it’s strange to me that I used to spend up to $100 in one night at the bars, feel miserably hungover and unproductive the next day, then go back out and do the same thing again that night. There’s nothing cool about it, and it’s unsustainable.

Within four years, all the tailgating, house parties, and other Iowa City drinking festivities will come to a close — at least at the frequency with which many college students partake in such activities. It’s

probably better to reflect on one’s college years having done something more meaningful and unique than attending monotonous parties.

About three-and-a-half years ago, my drinking problem reached the point that it was causing significant problems in my life. So, I quit and I’ve been sober ever since. I have noticed remarkable improvements in my financial situation, relationships, clarity of mind, and ability to handle stress.

For those who feel they may have a problem, there are Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at all times of the day and every

day of the week. In my experience with the group, the people who participate are some of the kindest and most fun I’ve ever met.

There isn’t much to be done to stop those of legal drinking age from abusing alcohol if that’s what they wish to do. I’m not a prohibitionist, and I’m also not your father.

I won’t tell people how to use their time, money, and brain cells. But for those who prefer to see their name on the dean’s list this semester rather than the city’s police blotter, perhaps spending more time sober would be the best way to go.

Making the most of volunteer experience

Volunteers need to take note of the diverse organizations that can use their help.

kasey-baller@uiowa.edu Volunteering can give many memories and morals for a lifetime. It can help individuals discover their passions as well as lead some into a career.

In the Iowa City area alone, dozens of nonprofits seek volunteers to stay open, as they cannot operate successfully alone.

In college, many seek to volunteer with such organizations to become more involved in the community and gain more experience pursuing their passions. Volunteering is also for those who plan to attend graduate

Over the past few years, Iowa’s water quality has become a matter of debate.

While the science points to nutrient pollution (primarily nitrogen and phosphorus runoff) negatively impacting recreational and drinking water quality around the state, state leaders are choosing to ignore these facts and claim that our water is fine.

As an Iowa native and a recent graduate of a public Iowa university, the Legislature’s denial of important en-

phasized areas of the campaign is Iowa’s great recreational activities, specifically water-based recreation. Having grown up in Clear Lake, I know firsthand that Iowa has some wonderful recreational opportunities.

But it is disingenuous for the current administration to take credit for these resources, considering the lack of serious policy proposals aimed at supporting water quality and outdoor recreation. For instance, after a decade, the

school or who hope to bolster their résumés.

Obviously, the humanity of helping others is more important than how it makes one look. College students need to be more aware of the missions behind the organizations with which they volunteer and determine what best suits them.

All nonprofits need community-member assistance, not simply just the attractive and popular organizations.

When hearing the word “nonprofit,” some immediately think of an organization that doesn’t have more than a handful of full-time employees and assists the needy. As this is true of many nonprofits, not all fall into this strict category. One example is the Iowa Children’s Museum, which has full-time employees and paying customers. In order to make sure everyone in the community can be involved, the museum holds family-friendly events that are

free to the community. Some events are so big that the museum needs up to 40 volunteers to assist. It is important to note that such organizations still need volunteers.

After speaking with Children Museum Executive Director Jeff Capps, my idea changed of what makes a nonprofit a good fit for those looking to get involved.

I asked Capps about the importance of college students getting involved in the organization. Capps has worked with nonprofits for many years and said each nonprofit utilizes volunteers differently, but because of funding, most would not make it without volunteers.

Museum volunteers are utilized in more of a structured manner and are part of the commitment to carry out its mission of encouraging others to learn through playing.

ment what they have learned themselves. This is why the museum’s college volunteers are so vital to its program, as their passion can positively influence others. You can better understand how to assist others in their learning, which is especially beneficial for those considering majoring in education or working with youth in the future. Many volunteers have a strong tie to the mission and the power of play, as they played at the museum when they were growing up and feel it is important to pass along the mission.

At the end of the day, no matter which nonprofit you choose to volunteer with, you are making a difference in the world and your work is needed. Community connections are vital to success.

Keep an open mind, as there are many types of nonprofits that need your help and will create a positive and meaningful experience.

vironmental issues is one of the reasons I’m considering leaving the state. I love Iowa, but I want to see the state’s leadership acknowledge the shortcomings and take positive steps toward addressing its issues.

I’ve seen Iowa grow positively — just look to Des Moines for a wonderful example of the modernization the state has gone through. Yet, the undeniable water issues — and lack of meaningful progress — show that Iowa isn’t interested in preserving the state’s natural resources for future generations.

While there have been multiple attempts at changing our water protections, such as the implementation of the Nutrient Reduction Strategy to the creation the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund, little has been done to actually fund the programs that would help clean up our waterways or incentivize behavior change at the scale necessary to tackle the scope of the nutrient pollution problem in Iowa.

Recently, Gov. Kim Reynolds launched “This is Iowa,” a campaign aimed at recruiting people, particularly young professionals, to consider Iowa for their next home. One of the heavily em-

conservation trust has yet to be funded despite the democratic will of Iowans. As someone who grew up in a recreational lake community, I also understand the economic toll it can take on small businesses and the community when people choose not to vacation due to poor water quality and harmful algae blooms.

With numerous microcystin and E. coli warnings at our state beaches, it’s hard to imagine inviting people in for a swim, let alone inviting young people to move or stay based on these impaired resources.

Brain drain is already a concern in Iowa, and ignoring environmental issues is not helping the problem. It’s not hard to see why many of my peers are choosing to move to places such as Minneapolis and Denver. Natural beauty and outdoor recreation are important to overall quality of life, and this is a factor we consider in choosing a place to settle down. By actually following through on its promises to keep our environment and our water clean, the state can work on keeping its current residents in Iowa.

HAWKEYES FROM FRONT After Iowa punter Michael Sleep-Dalton sent the ball deep, Iowa State’s Datrone Young ran into punt returner Jones, forcing a fumble. Iowa’s Devonte Young jumped on the free ball. That play ended the game and continued Iowa’s winning streak over Iowa State that has spanned the entire career of every player on the Hawkeyes.

“Seeing guys start to tear up, that’s what makes it special,” Stanley said.

“That’s what makes it so awesome to be a part of this team.”

Iowa’s last game in Ames featured a similar scenario. The game went into overtime and came down to the final play — a Stanley touchdown pass to

The Hawkeyes won, 44-41, to take their third in a row over the Cyclones. That was Stanley’s first season as a starter and Smith-Marsette’s true freshman campaign.

Now, two years later, they’re still undefeated against Iowa State.

The Cy-Hawk series tends to always come down to the wire. Each of the past four games have been won by 10 points or less, but the end result has been the same through them all.

“One thing you can almost bet on in this series is it’s going to be a four-quarter game,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said. “[Sept.

14] was certainly obviously that. A lot of ups and downs … The bottom line is it was a real test of mental toughness, physical toughness.

I thought our guys did a great job against a team that played extremely well.”

Dance Marathon launches ‘We Fight Together’ campaign University of Iowa Dance Marathon developed a new campaign aimed at fostering community and fighting as one.

rachel-steil@uiowa.edu Dance Marathon will aim to foster a spirit of unity in this year’s fight “For The Kids.”

University of Iowa Dance Marathon recently announced that it will celebrate the chapter’s 26th year with the slogan “We Fight Together.”

Dance Marathon Executive Director Allie Stutting initially pitched the “We Fight Together” campaign to the executive board. She said members of the executive board fell in love with the idea instantly.

“The first night [the executive board was] together, we just started running with it and talking about things that we could do with the campaign,” Stutting said.

She said this year’s campaign is very different from last year’s campaign, and she believes this will be a positive change.

“Last year’s campaign was called ‘Shape Your Impact,’ which was all about what you could do as an individual,” Stutting said. “This year, it is all about what we can do together.”

Stutting emphasized the power of connection and community and said this campaign’s theme is integral to the fight against pediatric cancer.

“I really believe in the

strength in numbers,” Stutting said. “My biggest goal for the campaign was that everyone knew they were connected to a family.”

UI senior Aaron Caldwell, a Dance Marathon Morale Captain, said he is already seeing changes from last year because of the new campaign and said he believes the slogan is accomplishing its goals.

“From what I am seeing this year already … our dancers want to get more involved,” Caldwell said, comparing the energy associated with this campaign with what he saw

last year as a member of the group’s recruitment and retention committee.

Caldwell credits this to the message of community instilled in the slogan, “We Fight Together.” Stutting agreed, saying the message is one of empowerment through numbers and community.

“The goal is to have everybody feel like they can be connected to the campaign and that they can join this fight against cancer,” Stutting said.

“It was our goal to foster community, celebrate difference, and ignite as one.”

UI Dance Marathon Lime

Captain Valerie Gunn said she feels that the campaign is spreading its message well and bringing the organization together as a whole unit.

“There are so many different levels of people in Dance Marathon,” Gunn said. “It makes everyone seem equally as important, which they are.”

Caldwell said he believes this campaign will really drive people to make a difference, and he’s found his own meaning in the campaign.

“I started working at the hospital, and a woman I worked with came up to me and was like, ‘Hey, I see you are doing

Dance Marathon,’ ” Caldwell said. “She ended up telling me that her son was diagnosed with pediatric cancer when he was younger, and they are a Dance Marathon family.”

This drove him to join the cause, Caldwell said, and to fight for and support his co-worker’s family.

“We all are fighting for the same cause,” he said.

But the Hawkeyes proved Lee Corso and all of the Cyclone fans wrong. Although it didn’t look pretty, the win was impressive. For a team to beat another good team when playing what was probably its worst game of the season is a plus.

Now the Hawkeyes can move on with confidence. Their bye week comes at a perfect time with the injuries they have suffered on the offensive line, defensive line, and secondary.

Then, they get a tune-up game against Middle Tennessee State in their nonconference finale before taking on Michigan in Ann Arbor in what could be their toughest game of the season.

That’s what makes the CyHawk win so important.

The Hawkeyes know they didn’t play up to their ability against the Cyclones, but they still found a way to win. That should give a talented team confidence.

If Iowa plays like it can, wins over Michigan and Wisconsin on the road and a victory over Penn State at home become real possibilities.

Shades of the 2015 season are visible.

When Iowa went 12-0 behind C.J. Beathard, a deep running back corps, and stellar defense, the Cy-Hawk game was close until Iowa pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The following week, Marshall Koehn hit a 57-yard game-winning field goal to down Pittsburgh in a night game at Kinnick.

Iowa parlayed those wins into a 62-12 tune-up win over North Texas, a 10-6 defensive win over then-No. 19 Wisconsin, and a 40-10 slaughtering of then-No. 20 Northwestern on its way to punching its ticket to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship.

The Hawkeyes’ win over the Cyclones can play a similar role.

The game wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter, and Iowa didn’t play its best, but it remained undefeated.

The Cy-Hawk win proved to be important in 2015, and it could be just as important this season.

The Iowa defense didn’t allow a point to Iowa State for the rest of the first half after returning from the delay. Stanley led a 12-play, 59-yard drive that resulted in a field goal right before the half to bring the score to 7-6.

Iowa State scored quickly to begin the second half, and Iowa needed to put points on the board to prevent the game from getting out of hand.

Halfway through the third quarter, Iowa had the ball facing third down at its own 19-yard line with a seemingly insurmountable 22 yards to go. Many teams might opt to run a draw or a screen pass in hopes of gaining a good chunk of yards to set up better field position for a punt.

Iowa decided to let Stanley sling it, which proved to be a good call.

Stanley stood calmly in the pocket surveying the field, only to see wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette find an opening on a post route. The veteran quarterback delivered a strike to Smith-Marsette, a perfectly place ball in a tight window to pick up 27 yards and a first down.

“I can’t say enough about what Nate is doing right now,” Ferentz said. “He’s more in control than he has ever been since we’ve been around him. That throw he made on third and [22] was as good as I’ve seen him throw.”

The play signified a switch in momentum for Iowa. The Hawkeyes kicked a field goal at the end of the possession. Iowa proceeded to secure a tightly contested game against the in-state rival.

HAWKEYE UPDATES Iowa volleyball outlasted

The Iowa volleyball team dropped a five-set match to South Dakota in the finale of the South Dakota Tournament on Saturday night.

The Hawkeyes and Coyotes traded each of the first four set.

South Dakota dominated the first set, only to have Iowa bounce back in a big way to take the second.

Iowa was unable to gain any momentum in the third set, but pushed the match to a fifth set after taking the fourth.

The two teams traded leads in the fifth set, only for South Dakota to take advantage of some unforced errors

by Iowa and take the match.

Juniors Griere Hughes and Brie Orr were named to the all-tournament team. Hughes Hughes accumulated a career high 24 kills in the tournament, while Orr had a season-high 48 assists.

This was Iowa’s first fiveset match of the Orr season.

Men’s golf in second at Golfweek Conference Challenge

At the conclusion of the first day of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the Iowa men’s golf team is in second place.

Seniors Alex Schaake and Benton Weibberg carded firstround scores of 69 (-3) at the Cedar Rapids Country Club golf course to lead the Hawkeyes.

Iowa recorded a season-best five-under-par (283) in the first round and trail only the tournament-leading Ball State. All five Hawkeyes competing finished the first round inside the top-32 of the 93-man field.

Schaake hit all 18 greens in regulation and recorded five birdies to tie for sixth place.

Weinberg also recorded five birdies, including three straight to finish the front nine.

Freshman Matthew Garside birdied the first three holes in his Hawkeye debut and is tied for 19th with an even-par 72. Sophomore Gonzalo Leal Montero and junior Joe Kim are tied for 32nd after the first day of competition at oneover-par (73).

Overall, Iowa led the 16-team tournament field in birdies (20) and par-four scoring through the first round.

robert-read@uiowa.edu A long weather delay can be demoralizing for any football team, especially a pair of delays that total nearly three hours. It can be easy for a team to lose focus with such long breaks between play.

Luckily for the Hawkeyes, they have a senior class led by quarterback Nate Stanley to guide the team to victory.

“We’re just thrilled to get the victory and proud of our seniors,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said. “We needed great leadership,

and we got it tonight. It was our first time on the road, it’s a tough place to play, so the seniors did a great job.”

Even for veteran players like A.J. Epenesa, the leadership the seniors showed was critical for the team’s success.

“The seniors showed us the way,” Epenesa said. “I think we reacted to it pretty well and responded. We didn’t play that great. It wasn’t pretty by any means, but we got the win and that’s all that matters.”

Iowa football has won

consecutive matchups against Iowa State

Here we are again.

It feels like we’ve been here before, and that’s because we have. Iowa picked up its fifth-consecutive win over Iowa State on Sept. 14, 18-17, leaving a feeling of optimism for the rest of the season.

And that’s warranted.

The Hawkeyes put their physical and mental toughness on full display by winning a game that included stellar play on special teams and two weather delays against one of the most competitive teams in the Big 12.

There’s a chance this win over Iowa State becomes a turning point for Iowa. Everyone expected the Hawkeyes to run through Miami (Ohio) and Rutgers in the first two weeks of the season, but the Cy-Hawk game was a toss-up.

Still, the Hawkeyes powered through the lightning and the Cyclones’ big plays to come out with a 1-point win.

It wasn’t Iowa’s cleanest game by any means.

The offense failed to finish drives, settling for four field goals while scoring only one touchdown.

Iowa’s offense wasn’t bad against Iowa State, but it wasn’t great. The Hawkeyes gained 201 yards through the air and 112 on the ground.

But the offense couldn’t finish drives. It scored only one touchdown all game and had to settle for field goals four times.

In the end, quarterback Nate Stanley did what he needed to do to manage the game, so it worked out for Iowa.

Iowa State took advantage of Iowa’s injuries in the secondary by throwing for 372 yards, including a 51-yard double pass that went for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Iowa also came up with a much-needed turnover when Geno Stone forced Brock Purdy to fumble on the Hawkeyes’ 30-yard line. A touchdown would have extended Iowa State’s lead to 14-3 before halftime, but Iowa kept itself in the game.

Special Teams

A+

It’s no secret that Iowa won the game with special teams.

The Hawkeyes needed every one of Keith Duncan’s three field goals to keep the Hawkeyes within striking distance and his fourth to take the lead.

Michael Sleep-Dalton punted the ball five times for 236 yards — an average of 47.2 yards per boot.

One of them went inside Iowa State’s 20-yard line, and two traveled at least 50 yards.

Add Devonte Young’s fumble recovery on a muffed punt to secure the game, and it was an incredible day for Hawkeye special teams.
