Stanley grows as Hawkeye career evolves Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley has grown from a backup his freshman year to a signal-caller who could become one of the best statistical quarterbacks in Hawkeye history.

BY PETE RUDEN peter-ruden@uiowa.edu When Nate Stanley first took the field as a college football player, he was an unknown.

Backing up C.J. Beathard — who had led Iowa to an undefeated regular season the year before — nobody wanted to see him play because that would mean Beathard was hurt.

In the third game of the 2016 season, those fears were realized.

An 19-year-old freshman with only three college pass attempts under his belt, Stanley first put his unknown potential on full display against North Dakota State on Sept. 17, 2016.

When Beathard went down with an injury, Stanley went 2-for2 for 45 yards on a drive that set up Iowa’s final touchdown.

His 37-yard pass to tight end George Kittle proved to be a sign of things to come.

Now entering his final season, Stanley has a chance to statistically become one of the best signal-callers in Hawkeye history. He’s within striking distance of Chuck Long’s career passing touchdown record.

“He was ready to go, and we weren’t afraid to let him go [against North Dakota State],” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said. “… He’s been out on the field in tough circumstances, so I think all those things will benefit him, and

I’m sure he’ll put those to good use this fall.”

After the Hawkeyes finished with a 12-0 regular season in 2015 and a Rose Bowl berth, and then Beathard helped the squad to another bowl game in 2016, the future looked blurry.

The question wasn’t whether Ferentz had found his quarterback — Stanley was the go-to guy from the beginning — but rather how the young gunslinger would perform in his first full year as a starter.

But Stanley learned from the player he had sat behind for a year.

“I think [Beathard] understood how hard it is for somebody to come in and be in that position,” Stanley said. “You’re not in your hometown, you’re battling for a position — because he went through it, too. He did a great job of just mentoring me and helping me get through that.”

After a year of backing up Beathard, the question marks surrounding Stanley quickly disappeared.

As a sophomore starter in 2017, Stanley threw for 2,432 yards and 26 touchdowns, only 1 away from tying Long’s single-season passing touchdown record.

He also threw only 6 interceptions, a positive sign for Iowa regarding Stanley’s decision-making.

The Menomonie, Wisconsin, native put up more impressive numbers in 2018, hurling another 26 scores and 2,852 yards.

Not everything has been perfect, though. Iowa lost a number

of close games last season, but Stanley said the losses to such teams as Penn State and Purdue helped teach the team how to respond. “[My journey] definitely hasn’t been straight line,” Stanley said.

“There have been ups and downs.

That’s just how it is for everybody.

You’re always going to fail, but I think what determines how successful you can be is how you learn from those failures and what you take from them.”

He has also taken strides in his leadership.

Stanley entered the program as a shy freshman, but since that year, he has been selected to travel to Big Ten media days twice, became a permanent offensive team captain, and served as a counselor at the Manning Passing Academy this offseason, where he helped develop the games of quarterbacks ranging from seventh grade to highschool seniors.

Now a more vocal leader, Stanley commands the offense. He has grown more comfortable on and off the field, which can be seen in his numbers and in his teammates’ respect.

“He was real quiet when he came in, and now it’s night and day the difference in how comfortable he is,” running back Toren Young said. “He’s emerged as the leader of this team.”

UI student describes her trying times in Sudan during protests Amani Ali, a Sudanese-American UI student, relates the story of her return to Sudan in the midst of conflict.

BY ANDY MITCHELL andrew-mitchell@uiowa.edu Sudan has made headlines worldwide for its year of protests and the violent response to those protests by the Sudanese interim government. The effects of that conflict have been felt all over the world, including the University of Iowa.

Amani Ali, a Sudanese-American student attending the UI, said she traveled across the globe to spend a month in her home country. It was her first time back in Sudan since her family moved to the U.S. in 2004, and she said her return was a shock.

Ali’s family came to the U.S. as refugees in the

2003. Upon her return to Sudan, she said, she was disheartened to see that very little had changed.

“In 15 years, you think a country would move forward with better infrastructure, better hospitals, better everything, but sadly, that’s not the case for Sudan,” Ali said.

The UI student stayed with her extended family in Al Haj Yousif, a neighborhood in the region of Khartoum North, close to the height of government protests in Khartoum city, the capital of Sudan. Although she stayed away from the protests, exploding bombs and gunfire were common in her neighborhood.

In May, when Ali arrived in Sudan, the protests against the interim government were not as violent as they eventually became during the month.

First-year rural students receive boost through UI program UI students from sparsely populated areas are learning how to conduct research through the UI Rural Scholars Program.

BY TIAN LIU tian-liu@uiowa.edu Four years ago, through collecting data from the Office of Admissions and the University of Iowa Honors Program, UI chemistry Associate Professor Scott Shaw found that significantly fewer small-town and rural students joined research groups from 201214.

His statistics demonstrated that while 54.9 percent of science majors were small-town and rural students, 35.4 percent of students doing research were from those areas.

Being someone from a rural area, Shaw said, spurred him to provide opportunities to students that he did not have when he was younger.

Beginning in 2015, with the help of the Admissions Office, he started reaching out to incoming students from rural areas every year and inviting them to join the Rural Scholar Program. “[I invited them] to join my research group for a year as real scholars to do research with me,” Shaw said.

Evangeline Holyoake, a UI sophomore from Decorah studying computer science, participated in the Rural Scholar Program last

school year.

“Before coming to the University of Iowa as a student, I was not sure I wanted to do … I’m interested in the environment, but I wasn’t sure whether I was able to do anything with that,” Holyoake said. “[The lab] not only showed me how to really work in the lab but also showed me what I want to do, what I am interested in, and a whole perception of what I’m going to do in the future.”

The year-long program starts with basic instruction on what research is.

Every week, students read research papers and meet with Shaw to discuss them, he said. Then, in the second semester, the students use the skills they have learned to begin their own research.

“After the first year is over, I got invited back to continue research in the lab,” Holyoake said. “I’m currently in for the summer, and I will stay here … next year, too.”

UI junior Catia Atienza of Maquoketa, studying interdepartmental studies is on the pre-dental track, relished the program.

“I’m really thankful I did participate in [the research program], because it is taught me about research …” she said. “It also made

After participating in the program, students can see what happens in the lab and understand the structure of

how research happens, so they know how to get into that system, Shaw said. He believes students can benefit from the experience, especially if they want to go to professional schools.

For now, the program is funded by the Research Corporation for Scientific Advancement through the Cottrell Scholar Award Shaw received in 2016, he said. The $100,000 research and teaching award that funded it for three years will run out this year.

“It’s the last year I have money to do it. I might find funding to continue it. It’s not really expensive, so I will find a way,” Shaw said.

“To support the program, it requires a few thousand

dollars each year.”

He said the biggest expense is time; it takes him a few hours a week to manage the program. But he really likes doing it and would like to expand the program.

One of the issues is he can only accommodate three to five students a year.

“I’m hoping sometime next year actually starting to teach a class, a class that can accommodate 30 students at a time and goes through the basics,” Shaw said.

It’s on us young people to decide which future we will create.

President Trump wants people of color he doesn’t like to “go back” to “the places from which they came.”

His supporters chant “send her back” when he mentions the names of U.S. congresswomen — all American citizens themselves. When confronted with this, he accused his political opponents of being racist and refused to disavow his hateful comments.

And these aren’t isolated incidents. He said some white-nationalist protesters are “very fine people.” Before that, he announced his presidential campaign by calling undocumented immigrants drug dealers and rapists.

And before that, he entered mainstream politics by falsely claiming President Obama was not born in the U.S. This is who he is.

The Daily Iowan Editorial Board believes the president’s racist sentiments are antithetical to American values. However, this isn’t just about condemning the president. Our nation’s wounds won’t instantly heal in January 2021 or 2025, when he’s out of of fice. The damage done by this era will last a lifetime.

Young people must stand up for an America in which all people in its borders truly have the opportunity to secure the rights of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

We are coming to age in time to choose whether we want

Are we going to sit back and watch the hateful minority retain its seats of power? No. Are we going to allow our future be dictated by those with no investment in the rest of this century? No. We’re going to stand up and create a world we believe in. We’re going to create it everywhere from our classrooms and churches to our dormitories and downtowns.

We’re going to create it with our friends and families, with people we don’t like and don’t know.

Standing against racism isn’t a partisan issue. No matter your political-party af filiation, this means voting down hateful politics at the ballot box. This means rejecting rhetoric that perpetuates

oppression of marginalized communities on campus, online, and everywhere else.

This means actively promoting equity and inclusion and embracing — not merely tolerating — diversity.

The political and cultural situation we find ourselves in is not one that will be remedied in a matter of months or even years. Our generation will confront this fight for the rest of our lives. We must be resolute in rejecting racism — especially that which stems from the White House.

It is not welcome here — not in Iowa, and most certainly not in our America.

Big Ten eyes the playoffs After missing out the past two seasons, the Big Ten is awaiting another chance at making the College Football Playoff.

BY ROBERT READ robert-read@uiowa.edu In a league that boasts personalities ranging from Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz to Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, unanimity can be rare.

However, the entire Big Ten can agree on one thing: It’s time to get the conference back into the

College Football Playoff.

Easier said than done.

The playoffs comprise the top four teams at the end of the regular season and the conference-championship games, as voted on by the playoffs committee. The Big Ten had a representative in each of the first three years of the playoffs, but the conference has been left out in

the past two years of the committee’s final four.

“I think obviously when you’re left out of the playoffs for two years in a row, there needs to be discussions, and discussions are going on,” Penn Franklin

State head coach James Franklin said at last week’s Big Ten media days. “And I think we’ve got to look at it all.”

Those discussions range from shortening the nine-game conference schedule back to eight to realigning the Big Ten’s two divisions.

Iowa trophy games a wild ride in 2019 With its regional rivals on the rise, Iowa football might have to struggle to retain its trophies in its biggest rivalry games in 2019.

BY PETE MILLS peter-mills@uiowa.edu Iowa football might have to work harder to hold on to the hardware from its trophy games this season.

With Big Ten rivals on the rise, the team’s trophy games are all set to be some of the most competitive in recent history. Because all of Iowa’s conference rivalry games — Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska — fall in the last month of the regular season, the teams will be geared up for the most sought-after games in their seasons.

With an older roster and veteran quarterback in Nate Stanley commanding the offense, experience could only help Iowa in the games.

But the Hawkeyes face a tough schedule in October, and Iowa kicks off its the November schedule attempting to regain the Heartland

The Badgers will threaten the conference with their powerful rushing attack again. Center Tyler Biadasz highlights the offensive line as one of the most talented in his position in the country. Junior Jonathan Taylor is in the Heisman Trophy talks already after putting up 2,194 yards and 16 touchdowns a year ago.

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Iowa a 53.7 percent chance of winning in Madison on Nov. 9. Much of that is because of the quarterback questions surrounding the Badgers’ offense at this point — Alex Hornibrook transferred to Florida State in the offseason, leaving four younger arms behind.

“We’re going to have one [quarterback] — we’re going to have four,” Paul Chryst joked at Big Ten media days. “I like our group … I like what they’ve done, not just this spring and summer but really kind of their development.”

A week later, Minnesota visits Kinnick to try to take back Floyd of Rosedale for the first time since 2014. The Gophers’ competitiveness in the rivalry is rising in the third season of head coach P.J. Fleck — the power index projects Minnesota having a 37.2 percent chance to win.

Iowa firmly snared the victory over Minnesota last season, 48-31 in Minneapolis.

Then-freshman quarterback Zack Annexstad threw 3 interceptions. But he and the rest of the young Gopher squad are a year older; Minnesota returns 17 starters this season.

“Went from the youngest team in America last year [to] now I think we’re the second youngest, so we moved up one spot possibly,” Fleck said.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t win. We’re just young. And close to 80 percent of our team is only freshmen and sophomores, which is exciting.”

That only leaves the Heroes Game. What is

being projected by many as the pseudo-Big Ten West championship, it is sure to be competitive.

But it will also be circled by the Huskers because of recent history; Iowa has won the game every season since 2014.

This season could be different; the power index has Iowa with only a 48.6 percent chance of winning in Lincoln, one of only four games in which Iowa is the underdog, according to the index. Iowa edged Nebraska — which went 0-6 to start head coach Scott Frost’s first season — by a 3-point margin on Nov. 23. But Frost believes the team he fielded in the second half of last year was completely different from the one he fielded in the first.

“We were certainly further down the road at the end of the season than we were at the beginning,” he said. “Love our attitude in the locker room right now and the work ethic that they’ve been showing all offseason.”

“The last couple years, obviously, our conference champion has been shut out of the College Football Playoffs,” Fitzgerald said. “Until we get to a point where we put strength of schedule, and then obviously the value back on being a conference champion, as the two components that are the most important, I think we’re going to continue to have that.”

UI alum’s exhibit tells migration stories in Iowa, beyond Micaela Terronez was inspired by her family’s history in Mexican communities in the Quad Cities to create an exhibit exploring the different reasons people choose to leave home.

BY RYLEE WILSON rylee-wilson@uiowa.edu Growing up, Micaela Terronez was fascinated with the photographs, objects, and stories her grandparents told about the family’s history in central Mexico.

Years later, her interest in the study of history and artifacts led her to pursue a

degree in library and information sciences at the University of Iowa. In her time at the UI, Terronez worked as a graduate assistant in the UI Libraries Special Collections, spending her time developing an exhibit to explore the history of migration in her hometown of the Quad Cities and stories of migration across the globe.

The exhibit, Moving Stories: Experiences and Remnants of Migration is on display in the Special Collections through August.

Her family migrated from Mexico in the early 1900s.

Terronez said the stories she heard growing up sparked her curiosity about migration.

“I took that and I decided: What are these other

migration stories that exist beyond my own family?” she said. “So I went into the archives, went into Special Collections to find things that would highlight migrant experiences. I narrowed it down to a couple that stood out to me the most; there’s a nice variety of different backgrounds. It’s faculty

It was a lot of work, but I was really happy with the end product.”

Terronez grew up in the Quad Cities, which she said possesses a unique history of migration. Sections of her exhibit focus on two historically Mexican barrios, Cook’s Point

in Davenport and Holy City in Bettendorf.

“That is primarily where my family derived from,” she said. “Just like I connected to those materials from those areas, I hope that other people connect across the exhibit.”

July 10 marked the 55th anniversary of the Beatles, third studio album, A Hard Day’s Night. The album was released along with the band’s first feature film of the same title.

Released months after the Beatles took America by storm, it is the first album they released that contained entirely original compositions. A Hard Day’s Night perfectly captures the appeal of the Beatles in the early days. The upbeat album reflects a time in the Beatles’ career when Beatlemania was just starting to take hold.The album’s title track, “A Hard Day’s Night,” kicks off the album. It opens with a bright, resounding chord, setting the tone for the album as a whole. The songs that follow tell stories of love and heartbreak, lyrical themes that are timeless and can still be related to in 2019. “If I Fell” slows the album down, giving it some breathing room while capturing the yearning so many feel when worried about a crush. She designed a color-coded map on which visitors can display the reasons their families chose to migrate to the U.S. “I wanted to go back to that to see the broad structure of migration and how inherent it is to the United States: who we are,” she said. “It’s very inherent to being human as well. People have to move for different reasons, and it’s just part of life.”

Maria Ceballos, a UI graduate student from Colombia, designed the artwork to promote Terronez’s exhibit. Cerballos said she wanted the images she created to reflect the human experience of migration.

“We decided that it would be good to show immigration as something that brings more than passports to the place people get to,” she said. “[It brings] more cultural knowledge, and diversity, and language.”

After graduating from the UI in May, Terronez started working for Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.

Terronez says she plans to continue to work in archives, and she hopes to be able to connect the resources in Special Collections beyond the academic community.

“That can be a challenge in academic libraries, whether it’s the UI or Knox College,” she said. “There’s always a pressure or a challenge to get past the academic community or even to get to the academic community in sharing those

stories. My goal as a librarian is to first get out to the academic community and give accessible resources but also beyond that to the broader community and let everyone know that special collections and archives are for everyone. They’re not just for the academic community.”

Terronez still resides in the Quad Cities, maintaining her connection to

her home community and family. A note from her displayed in the exhibit dedicates her work to her ancestors who migrated to Iowa and Illinois.

“I hope that this exhibit inspires you to explore and engage with your own migration stories, however distant or near. As my grandmother often told me as a child: Remember where you came from,” the note reads.

The horror, the horror — why so popular?

Horror films have always been popular among moviegoers, but what’s causing their recent surge?

BY AUSTIN J. YERINGTON austing-yerington@uiowa.edu Chilling soundtracks, twisted camera angles, and amazing cast performances all contribute to a great horror movie.

With recent films such as Midsommar and Us, there seems to be a newfound respect and love for the genre.

2017 was the biggest year for horror ticket sales in history, raking in $733 million according to Box Office Mojo.

Now with this year’s horror films, such as Jordan Peele’s Us and It: Part 2, 2019 is set to be another historical benchmark in the horror box office.

But why is that? Is there something about this generation that needs to be scared more than others?

“It’s that testing of yourself, of that ‘What’s the worst thing that can possibly happen?’ ” cinema Ph.D. candidate Hannah Bonner said.

“Even if it’s outside reality, to experience that from a safe distance, to allow myself to be scared, but then I can turn it off at the end.”

Horror movies are built on tension, which can come from the situation, such as the snowed-in hotel in The Shining or the political message in 2017’s Get Out. These situations create a narrative experience that many won’t soon forget.

Tales to scare aren’t new,

and they aren’t tied to any one culture.

“Every culture has some form of horror. [That is why] ghosts exist in every culture; it’s tapping into something that is unconscious,” Associate Professor of cinema Corey Creekmur said. “The other kind of explanation is they are allegorical, they are tapping into real life like racism and sexism.”

These tales tell something that is deeper than crazy rampages on unsuspecting college kids. The ones that stick with people long after the credits have rolled strike something deeper in our psyche.

“I think the horror movies that really resonate with the public and have sustaining power are the ones that are more than the gore and the jump scares,” Bonner said.

“What I find disturbing about that [The Exorcist] film isn’t the special effects so much as this medical practice that can’t figure out what is wrong with this young girl.”

Movies that cause the icy feeling of fear to crawl down the backs of the viewers don’t just scare them with a welltimed jump scares, they build a deeper feeling of discomfort and tension that won’t go away after a quick jump occurs.

“It’s easy to make people jump in a movie — play a loud sound or something really shocking, and they’ll jump,”

Creekmur said. “But that’s cheaper and easier than suspense and buildup.”

The deep, rising tension can deeply affect viewers.

The skin-crawling themes in horror movies are one aspect of the genre that can make it stand out from the rest, but the way filmmakers use horror as a metaphor or a backdrop to something so much bigger is unique to the style.

“You can use horror as a canvas to tell a horror story, and at the exact same time, you’re telling other stories,” FilmScene Grindhouse programmer Ross Meyer said. “Whether that’s a ‘spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down,’ I don’t know. But you can’t always fit a really on-the-nose metaphor into all genres of film.”

The way of showing a reflection of society through the lens of horror has been around for years, but because of our current political and historical feeling of morality, the vehicle of escapism helps the most.

“So to have some form of escapism is crazy fun,” Meyer said. “There’s something interesting about a roomful of strangers in the dark together experiencing terror, then the relief that comes when the terror fades away.”
